There’s nothing scarier than not being prepared for a hurricane. Homeowners throughout the Keys have all felt the anxiety of seeing that multicolored blob swirling towards Florida on the TV. Just thinking about the work involved could make anybody’s head hurt. Hurricanes are like in-laws, they visit every so often, appear unexpectedly, and make you run to the store to stock up on emergency equipment (rum, ice, limes). Fittingly, The Weekly asked brave locals…

“D
oc” Dan Zieg is running for election for the Marathon City Council. First elected in 2014, he was the first candidate to file with the elections office back in April and joins incumbent Bill Kelly, appointed councilman John Bartus and candidate Steve Cook. Marathon’s at-large election coincides with presidential contest on Nov. 3 and will result in the top three candidates securing a seat on the Marathon City Council. “The first time around I only knew what I heard at the meetings and what I learned from reading,” Zieg said. “This time it’s much easier and I’m much more knowledgeable about what’s going on in Marathon.” Zieg said he’s proud of his record. Among the solutions to city issues he’s most proud of is re-writing the “1-500foot rule” that governs the location of

liquor stores in Marathon, protecting the rights of property owners who live near the boat ramp on Harbor Drive, and creating a rule that requires a development agreement if a property parcel is being substantially subdivided for multiple residences. In the broader view, he was also a part of the movement to bring legal counsel in-house, the promotion of George Garrett to Deputy City Manager and approving the hire of Dan Saus, the director of the Utilities Department that oversees wastewater and stormwater in Marathon. “I want to look ahead and try to avoid problems before they become an issue,” he said. The councilman said his next task, if re-elected, will be to tackle the lack of affordable housing in a meaningful way. That entails the involvement of not only city officials, but also elected state officials, especially as it regards regulating vacation rentals, Zieg said. “We need for [vacation rental laws] to come back under local rule, rather than state-mandated law,” he said, adding that he hopes to preserve existing, “de-facto” affordable housing by incentivizing deed restrictions in the private sector. “Government alone can’t solve our lack of affordable housing,” Zieg said. “The private sector will step up and help solve the problem if we lay out the equation.” Zieg is a retired orthopedic surgeon. Besides serving on the council, he is an avid pilot and businessman. He has two sons living in the Mid-west: Brandon and Katie have a son, Jack, 14 months; and Ryan and Elsa.

Monroe County Supervisor of Elections
Going back to 1954, the highest recorded turnout in a general election in Florida was in 1992. The presidential election featured the contest between Democrat Bill Clinton and incumbent Republican President George Bush. Independent candidate Ross Perot secured nearly 19 percent of the vote — the highest percentage of any third-party candidate in a U.S. presidential election in 80 years. Clinton won.

Monroe County voters were moved from active to inactive due to address change. Voters can check their status by visiting www. keys-elections.org and clicking on the “My Registration Status” button.
The Supervisor Office is a well-oiled machine and doesn’t change hands often. W.M. Billy Freeman and Harry Sawyer both served 28 years. Joyce Griffin, above, was elected in 2012, but has been an employee of the office for 32 years.
Polling places In Florida and the Keys, polling places are pretty standard — municipal facilities, churches and high school auditoriums. Elections in other countries, however, feature some pretty strange places to cast a vote. During the “Brexit” vote earlier this year, British citizens cast votes in pubs, Laundromats and boxing gyms.
Teddy Roosevelt’s Progressive Party, nicknamed the Bull Moose Party, appeared after Roosevelt lost the Republican Party’s nomination to William Taft in 1912. Roosevelt formed a third party and entered the race. It was not enough, although Roosevelt received about 4.1 million votes — 27 percent. The party earned its nickname after Roosevelt was famously quoted saying that he felt “fit as a bull moose.”

Monroe County received new ballot machines in 2013 — 76 of them. The entire purchase cost approximately $600,000 including software, maintenance and licensing. This machine offers voters complete privacy — including those with disabilities. Hearing, sight, and physically impaired people can roll right up to the machine and use a combination of keypad and handheld remote to mark their choices.

Votes
In the 2008 election, the race between Teagan Slayton and Mary Van Den Brook for circuit court judge, group four, was very close — nine votes.
Prior to the 12th Amendment of the Constitution in 1804, the presidential candidate who received the second highest number of electoral votes was named the vice-president. The amendment mandated that electors vote for the offices of president and vice-president separately.

Monroe County has 153 registered Libertarian voters.
‘The Best Party’
In 2010, a satirical political party in Reykjavik, Iceland, named the “The Best Party” won various seats of the local council elections with 34.7 percent of the city’s overall vote. Their founder, a comedian named Jon Gnarr, became mayor. The party had such fruitful results by assuring constituents they would not keep a single campaign promise. While campaigning, Gnarr had promised free towels at all hot springs and a polar bear for Reykjavik's zoo.

According to the Tampa Bay Tribune, voters in Florida have requested 2,185,397 absentee ballots. In the Keys, 13,000 ballots are being mailed. Once an after thought, now absentee and early voting results are crucial to the election process. “In 2014, for the first time, the combination of absentee and early voters in the state of Florida was higher than the number of voters actually going to the poll on election day,” said Monroe County Supervisor of Election Joyce Griffin. Absentee votes are opened over a specified period of time by employees of the office. They sign confidentiality agreements and can be charged with a felony if they leak information about the results.

re you socially liberal and fiscally conservative with libertarian sensibilities? There is relief. Monroe County residents have until 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1 to switch their party affiliation if they feel strongly about a certain candidate running outside of their preferred political party. (Florida is a closed primary election state, which means registered voters can only vote for their registered party’s candidates in the primary election.) Republican voters will rule on the senate seat currently held by Marco Rubio, and several local races including Clerk of Court, County Commission, and two Mosquito Control districts. Democrats have the senate and congressional races and will decide which candidate will face state representative Holly Raschein (R) in the general election. Since there is no democratic challenger for County Commission, District IV, all voters will cast ballots on the race between incumbent Sylvia Murphy (R) and her challenger, Robby Majeska (R). And according to Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin, this year marks the first time Libertarians will get their own ballot due to the candidates running for US Senate. Near the bottom of the form, applicants can choose between Democratic, Republican, no party afflation and a blank space to write in their preference. Griffin encourages applicants who consider themselves as “independent” to choose “no party affiliation.” “Most of the voters who consider themselves as independent are not independent of any party,” Griffin said. “They are members of the Independent Party of Florida.” Griffin said the bulk of the absentee ballot were mailed this past Tuesday and those requesting an absentee ballot should have them by Friday, Aug. 5 or request a new ballot. Early voting will begin Monday, Aug. 15. The primary election will take place on Tuesday, August 30 with polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. For more info, visit keys-elections.org.

Hilda Hernandez, 63, and her mother Hilda Rivero, 83, passed on Monday, July 25 in a car crash in the Lower Keys. A double-service has been set for Saturday, July 30 at 3 p.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West. Hilda was part owner of Juice Paradise on the west end of Marathon with her partner of 28 years, Zuly Fernandez. The two opened the juice and sandwich shop five years ago, after retiring from careers in South Florida where they owned a beauty shop. “She didn’t need to work,” said Zuly of her partner, “but Juice Paradise was her passion. She loved seeing people and taking care of them.” Outside of cooking in the kitchen and creating her fantastic flan, Hilda enjoyed spending time with her Doberman Pincher Redsea, and cat Mackie. Hilda and her mother are survived by Zuly, family member Yoisnel Peña and the other ladies at Juice Paradise — Haidee, Kenia, Estrella and Ayindri. “She’s loved and will be missed,” said Zuly.

t about 4 a.m. this past Friday, after hours of work by nearly 30 people, Parsons Brinckerhoff Senior Project Engineer Pom Chakkaphak declared with a thumbs up: “We are done.” Two large cranes had just lifted the second 120-foot-long, 108,000-pound concrete beam onto concrete slabs previously constructed at each end of Marvin D. Adams Waterway in Key Largo. Putting the two monster-sized beams successfully into place was the biggest challenge of building Monroe County’s new pedestrian bridge, said Jim Hennigar, Project Manager with Douglas N. Higgins, the construction contractor. Parson Brinckerhoff is the Construction, Engineering and Inspection firm for the project. “These are the ‘premiere league’ of beams,” said Hennigar, who hails from Ireland. He explained that they had to be that long because support structures could not be placed in the middle of the popular waterway for boat traffic traveling between Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The $1.18 million, 11.5-foot wide pedestrian bridge at MM 103.3 on U.S. 1 is expected to be finished in December, said Debra London, the project’s manager for Monroe County. The pedestrian bridge is the final piece of the U.S. 1 Bayside Shared Use Path, which stretches from approximately MM 99 to 106 and provides a safe, paved route for people to walk, run and bike. The project is funded with a $475,000 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) grant, impact fees and infrastructure sales tax revenues. To put the two beams into place took a small army. The Florida Keys Electric Cooperative depowered the overhead electrical line for the safety of all personnel. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office controlled vehicle traffic on U.S. 1 and marine traffic on Adams Cut. And crews from Parsons Brinckerhoff, Douglas N. Higgins and subcontractor American Empire Builders worked together to get the long and heavy beams moved from special trucks, up and over the bridge railing and into place over the waterway. — Contributed

MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
MARATHON WEEKLY / JULY 29, 2016
Keys
Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly. What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am involved in volleyball, National Honor Society, SWAT, Relay for Life and Mu Alpha Theta. These organizations are important to me because they help me be active in the school and the community.
Established in 1984

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? Although she isn’t a teacher, Rachel Philcox has been the biggest inspiration to me at MHS. She has always motivated me to strive for excellence and encouraged me to try new things.
What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? One of the biggest challenges facing the Keys would have to be the limited opportunities available. To meet these challenges, I branch out and look for new ideas. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? I would advise him to focus more on the future of our nation. What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend college in state, then hopefully take time to travel. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to always wear sunscreen and bring a bottle of water everywhere you go.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think all of my AP and DE classes have helped prepare me for life after high school. They have helped teach me to manage my time easily. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? We have a lot more technology and resources at our disposal than our parents did.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
MARATHON WEEKLY / JULY 29, 2016
K
elly Qualls’ official title is data entry registrar at Stanley Switlik Elementary. But locals know her as “the lady at the front desk.” She talks to parents, mans the phones, commandeers students to run notes to teachers. She’s a fixture; she’s worked at Middle Keys schools since 1995, the last 15 at SSE. Every kid in Marathon under the age of 20 recognizes Kelly Qualls.
1.
Were you born and raised in Marathon? Born in Key West, but raised in Marathon.
2. What was it like growing up here? We had so many things to do — a bowling alley, movie theater and a skating rink, We went to Sombrero Beach and all the football games. Growing up in Marathon was so much fun, everyone got along with each other. 3. What year did you graduate high school? I graduated Marathon High School in 1986. In 2014, I received my degree from Florida Keys Community College in business administration. 4. How old are you? Forty-seven, 48 in September. 5. Have you always worked at Stanley Switlik? I started out as a paraprofessional at Marathon High School, then worked in the office at Sue Moore for two years, then as a paraprofessional at SSE for one year, and then I got the job I have now. I replaced Louis Gonzalez. 6. What do you do there? I meet all the new students and parents as they come in to register their child to attend our school. I am the front line — dealing with school staff, buses, students, parents. There’s a lot of challenges. 7. Do you have family? Both of my parents have passed on. My mom, Mildred Rainey, worked for Monroe County School District for 28.5 years as a bus driver and part time at the Monroe County Nutrition Site. My dad, Johnny Qualls, was the first landscaper in Marathon. I have nine brothers and sisters and I am the second to last. One of my sisters has passed on.
And, if they have any good sense, they answer all of her questions with “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am.” It’s not unusual for misbehaving children to be parked next to her desk where she can deliver a stinging, “What were you thinking?” or just give them THAT look.
12. Why do you love the Keys? I love the “salt life” — riding on the boat, going to the beach. My mother would always take us to the beach every Sunday right after church. People would see us coming and they knew that was “my mother’s” favorite pavilion and they would move so Ms. Mildred could have her spot. We would also spend the whole day there as my mother would sit and talk with us and other friends there.
8. What brings you joy? My children Shakia Mitchell, 24, who just graduated from FIU and my son, Jarrod Mitchell, 22. I love to hang out with them and travel with them and my partner, the father of my children, Willie Mitchell. 9. Who has most inspired you? My mother. She was strong and never let us go off-the-handle. She showed us respect, and we respected her. Plus, she was a bus driver. So when she asked me or my brothers and sisters what we did that day, she already knew. She was just checking to see if we would tell her the truth. But both my parents were always kind. My father always had a smile. 10. What is your motto? Your choices matter; your actions make a difference; and your example will influence others. 11. What do you do every day? I wake up and thank God for letting my family see another beautiful day, along with reading my Bible and keeping God first in my life.
13. Are you superstitious? My daughter, Shakia, say so! She says everything I tell her comes true and asks me for winning lottery numbers! Sometimes I dream that I’m out fishing with friends or family. It’s a long dream, and the fish are really easy to catch. Then a little boy or girl will wander up and I ask them ‘Who are you with?’ Usually within the week, I’ll learn that somebody I know is pregnant. Dreams about fishing means someone is pregnant. 14. Where have you been? I love to travel! I’ve been to Chicago, New York City, the Bahamas and Mexico. I plan to visit Italy, Las Vegas and Hawaii.

Questions with
KELLY QUALLS
15. Did you face racism growing up in the Keys? Living here in the Marathon I never had to face racism, but everyone has their own story. 16. How do you connect with misbehaving kids? I can show them a different perspective about the situation, but I’m always straightforward and I show them respect. I let them know we all have faults, but we can correct them. I let them know we all make mistakes, but in life we have to correct them. I tell them they can do better. 17. What do you watch? I watch “Empire,” action movies, and the “Madea” series (Tyler Perry). He doesn’t sugarcoat anything. He tells it like it is. 18. What do your kids say about you? [Laughing] That I don’t sugarcoat anything. They ask me a question and they get the real deal. 19. What was your worst job? Working as a cashier at the old Pantry Pride grocery store. 20. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Mark your calendars and have some fun!
O
n Tuesday, Aug. 2, the Sheriff's Office will sponsor National Night Out events in the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys. All of the events will feature food, refreshments, and a great chance to meet your neighbors, members of the Sheriff’s Office from a wide variety of divisions, departments and special teams and many others who are involved in the field of public safety here in the Florida Keys. The goal of National Night Out is to bring the community together to discuss how we can all make our neighborhoods cleaner, safer and more secure. The Sheriff's Office will have crime prevention information to share at the event. Community members will learn how to heighten their crime and drug prevention awareness. The Sheriff’s Office hopes to
generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Everyone participating will send a message to criminals letting them know that Monroe County neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime. “This yearly event is an important one for our agency. We get the opportunity to meet the people we are charged with serving and protecting in a less formal, more fun setting,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “I hope everyone will take this opportunity to meet their neighbors, learn about crime prevention and meet the deputies who are out there patrolling our community and keeping it safe,” he said. • The Key Largo event will be Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Key Largo Community Park. Captain Don Fanelli and Lieutenant Al Ramirez want to invite the entire community to attend their free event. Members of the Sheriff’s Office will be on hand, along with others from the public safety community.
Florida Highway Patrol officers Joe Sanchez, right, and Jackson Morrisseau are the stars of the show last year with a spinning car rigged to throw seatbelt-less crash dummies.
• The Marathon event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Stanley Switlik School. Captain Gene Thompson and Lt. Derek Paul invite everyone to join them and have some fun. There will be free food and refreshments, live music and residents will be able to visit many law enforcement, public safety and community groups at the event. • The Stock Island event will be at Sheriffs Headquarters Building, 5525 College Road on Stock Island, Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 5 – 7 p.m. Captain Don Hiller and Lieutenant Donnie Catala want to welcome the Lower Keys community to come on out for a great time. — Contributed

Key Largo camp shows compassion to wayward teens
D
riving along U.S. 1 in Key Largo, there is are two signs, one reading “North Carolina Outward Bound” and the other “Outward Bound.” Recently, some trees have been removed and these two signs have become significantly more visible, yet the program has been operating in the Keys since the early 1990s. North Carolina Outward Bound is an international program that offers help to teens ages 12-17 who have problems specific to family, school and or substance abuse. There are 16 camps in the U.S., and some serve adults and entire families. In Key Largo, the camp organizes more than a dozen wilderness expeditions that last 20 days just for kids. It’s 20 days without electronics, without showers, without flushing toilets. “We take kids out of their home environment, their daily peer groups and push them to learn how to survive,” said Amy Ambachtsheer, program director, adding that Outward Bound is not a boot camp. “We take a compassionate approach. If a kid wants to walk away and take some time to themselves, they’re welcome.” Mike Bohnenkamp, the logistics coordinator was gearing up for the upcoming Aug. 2 expedition with 11 boys. He was creating bulk dry-good snack packs. He’s responsible for ensuring the canoes and camping gear are operational and figuring out what’s needed for each expedition. He’s been with Outward Bound for five years now, with a degree in Parks and Recreation.
“We have gear and clothing for kids who don’t have it. Sometimes people donate them or sometimes kids leave them behind, so we reuse them,” Bohnenkamp said. After the expedition, kids are required to follow up with three to five hours of community service. Many want to volunteer at the Key Largo camp. “I’ve had kids that want to come back and work here because of their experience,” Bohnenkamp said. Wanda Roberts is the intake coordinator. She’s responsible for vetting kids into the program, to make sure they’re good candidates. Kids must be enrolled in school, cannot have a sexual misconduct or violent behavior records. They also must be physically fit. She interviews them at the beginning, and at the completion of the expedition. “Sometimes I have kids tell me this is what they want to do. They want to be involved in programs like this,” Roberts said. Although it varies year to year, about 80-90 percent of the program is a state funded and the Key Largo operation serves Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. To qualify, the student must be referred by school, a social services agency or a community organization ranging from teen courts to runaway shelters. The other small percentage is private enrollments. To learn more about the camp, or donate, call 800-327-2995 or email wroberts@ncobs.org.

• Down payment. Just as you put money down on a new car, mortgage lenders like to see down payments from homebuyers. A down payment not only reduces the total amount you need to borrow, but it also shows the lender you are able to manage money. Different lenders require different amounts for a down payment, but most would likely view 10-20 percent of the home's purchase price to be a good down payment. • Collateral. This is the property you agree to "put up" in exchange for the loan and serves to protect the lender against a borrower's default. If you're buying a manufactured home, you can collateralize the loan with either the home itself or with the home and a piece of land together. For site-built homes, the loan would be collateralized with the home and land together always. • Loan amount. The amount you need to borrow is calculated by taking the purchase price of the home, less your down payment, and adding any other expenses that will be

financed as part of the loan, which could include closing costs, discount points and third party fees. • Credit score. Lenders will want to review the credit reports and scores for everyone who is listed as a borrower on the mortgage application. With your written permission, the lender will obtain your credit report from a credit reporting agency. Generally, the better your credit score is the more likely you will be approved, plus qualify for the best available interest rate from the lender you choose. • Origination cost. This is the amount the lender charges to process the loan application, which includes gathering and reviewing all loan application documents, underwriting and closing your home loan. This expense typically appears on your loan documents as a "loan origination fee." To learn more about mortgages for manufactured homes, visit www. vmfhomeloan.com. —brandpoint.com

Marathon Grill and Ale House
“E
verything I make is great,” said Marathon Grill and Ale House bartender Cory Suchara (pronounced “Sahara.” But ’The Savory’ is delightful — made with three limes, muddled cucumber in simple syrup, Hendricks gin, a splash of soda water and garnished with a lime.” He calls it an Ale House specialty “with a Cory twist.” After bopping around seasonally as a bartender, Cory grew roots in Marathon about three years ago. “I decided to stay for the people, the weather, and of course, the fishing,” he said. His favorite part about working at the Ale House is his guests. “We have a local clientele, plus a fun nightlife, and the air conditioning has its benefits,” he said. “The Savory” goes best with the Caprese salad, in his opinion. He went on to describe the salad beautifully: “Field greens with olive oil, whole sliced tomatoes, fresh grated mozzarella and a homemade balsamic glaze.” “Go big and add blackened shrimp,” he said. When he isn’t bartending, Cory is out bar hopping, casting line, and visiting other local watering holes. Marathon Grill and Ale House is located inside the Gulfside Village in Marathon.

HIGH MARKS Marathon paramedic presented state award
GABRIEL SANCHEZ

he Florida Association of EMS Educators has presented Marathon Fire Rescue Capt. Joe Forcine the 2015-2016 Preceptor of the Year award. The award recognizes Forcine’s accomplishments as a paramedic educator, as well as his diligence in mentoring new firefighters, a duty he’s loved since arriving in 2003. “I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said Fire Chief John Johnson. “With Capt. Forcine winning this state award, I think it shows what a small department like ours can do and how we do it. Our department is filled with so many talented and dedicated firefighters, like Capt. Forcine, who serve as assets to the City of Marathon.” Marathon Fire Department is home to the Southeastern Medical Academy, where Capt. Forcine instructs three levels of paramedic courses. The first is basic CPR and safety aspects of the job. The second is an emergency medical technician course, which certifies students to become formal employees of a fire department. The third, Forcine said, is necessary for those would make it a career, instructing and certifying paramedics for emergency scene work. As early as 3 years old, Forcine was fascinated by shows like “Emergency 51,” which he explained was the first EMS show based on paramedics. “As a kid, I would watch it and think ‘these guys are firemen and they’re paramedics…’, and I was just addicted,” said Capt. Forcine. Forcine began his career after graduating from Ocala’s Florida State Fire College in 1994, then working in Broward County alongside Chief Bill McGrath, who is currently program director of Southeastern Medical Academy, and now his mentor. “I think in life it’s important to continuously find people who can help you grow,” said Forcine. In three years he quickly gained recognition for his abilities, and by 1997 was tasked to head training. Forcine has instructed paramedic classes for not only fire departments, but also colleges and hospitals. Capt. Forcine trains local paramedics to be prepared for the realities they face within the district. He takes students on jogs around town to familiarize them with area, and implements strategies like “stress tests” to keep them sharp. (Paramedics are tested physically and then posed questions on, for example, pharmacology.) In fact, Forcine has implemented more training to keep up with the rising number of incidents the department responds to related to medication/drugs. When he noticed that local paramedics faced obstacles very different than their mainland counterparts, he moved to equip Marathon Fire Rescue with more remedies to save lives.

City of Marathon Fire Rescue calls equal roughly 3,000 a year, divided by the 21 firefighter and paramedics, that 142.85 calls per person. Miami has roughly 95,000 calls per 600 firefighters, that’s 158.33 calls per person.
GABRIEL SANCHEZ/Keys Weekly
Class sizes at Marathon’s Southeastern Medical Academy average about six to eight paramedics, but they have accommodated as many as 17. Forcine has instructed paramedics as young as recent high school graduates to possibly the oldest graduating paramedic in history, at the age of 76, who is still working part-time at Marathon Fire Rescue to this day. Those interested in becoming a paramedic need only visit the Marathon Fire Rescue Department and inquire. Locals are encouraged to do an observation and experience what the daily life of a Marathon paramedic is like. Observation lengths vary, and participants must sign a release. “You’d be surprised how many people have rode with us, volunteered their time, and eventually become professionals and officers,” said Forcine.
Capt. Joe Forcine, center, accepts an award for mentoring.
FORCINE IN ACTION While the Weekly was interviewing Capt. Forcine at Marathon Fire Rescue, an emergency call came in over the intercom. The majority of the paramedics were at the medical examiner’s office, which left Capt. Forcine and Lanny Woodbury to respond to the call. The Weekly was fortunate enough to ride along to the call, and observe Marathon’s finest administer medical attention to a local man. With calm, compassion, and care, Forcine and Woodbury quickly assessed the man’s condition. Within minutes the condition of the distressed man improved. Shortly after, two more paramedics arrived, were promptly briefed on the man’s condition, and effortlessly took over. The professionalism these men displayed was truly extraordinary and a testament to the tireless work of our local first responders.
Firefighter Lanny Woodbury and Capt. Joe Forcine regroup after responding to a home emergency in Marathon on July 26.

Racism and bigotry thrives in the online world
W
Sunday Services
AN SPECIAL
Proud to be Prejudiced
hen Barack Obama was inaugurated back in 2009, I recall hearing a commentator remark that upon the election of an African-American President, we had moved into a postracial society. If only that had been true. Here in the 21st Century, racial tensions seem at an all-time high. Among other things, vile posts on social media outlets have let us all know that racism is alive and well today. A recent example is what happened to “Saturday Night Live” and “Ghostbusters” actor Leslie Jones on Twitter. Some subhuman pond scum (and alleged British journalist) named Milo Yiannopoulos incited a Twitter attack against Jones and convinced his “followers” to harass the actress. Many of them did, sending horrifyingly racist, sexist, and degrading tweets comparing her to, among other things, gorillas. There were many other tweets that were even worse and unbelievably offensive. Jones briefly left Twitter, posting, “I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the (expletive deleted) I got today... wrong.” Jones came back to Twitter, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey permanently suspended Milo Yiannopoulos’ Twitter account. Sadly, this isn’t the only such racist incident in social media. When Sasha Obama turned 15 this past June, the racists came out on Facebook in full force. “Get your monkey ass out of our WHITE house,” wrote one lowlife slime dweller. “Hope U get raped,” wrote another. And JOHN one more (among the hundreds posted): “Your dad is a BARTUS disgusting gay muslim traitor, your ugly mom is really a man, and America hates you.” All this vitriol directed at is a City Council a 15-year-old girl? What could she have possibly done to member and a former Mayor of these people to deserve all this hate? the City of MaraAccording to a report from a British think tank, thon. John is also intentionally abusive racist and derogatory messages are a musician who posted on Twitter at a rate of about 500 to 2,000 tweets performs around per day, or roughly one bigoted tweet every forty-five sectown at various establishments. onds. It’s a world-wide phenomenon, with people posting every possible anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Christian, anti-gay, anti-cop, anti-name-your-race-here message to legions of likeminded bigots. In some online circles, racism and bigotry is “cool” — and as soon as the offending trolls’ accounts are revoked for violating terms of service, more spring up again to spread the message of hate. The internet and online world were supposed to have the effect of bringing the world together through the filter-free spread of information across the planet. Perhaps we should have known that every bigoted bottom-feeding mouth-breather with a computer and online access would use the technology to spread their despicable message rather than learn, understand, and grow. Instead of progress toward peace and understanding, we are watching hate-mongers among us as they stoke the flames of discontent among their ignorant followers. As the Obama presidency approaches its end, the post-racial American society that one commentator alluded to so long ago seems more out of reach than ever. And it’s a damn shame. Fifty-two years after the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1964 (which Congress recently thought we didn’t need anymore), racism and bigotry is alive and well, and embraced by far too many who seem horrifyingly proud of their prejudice. John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek Bar & Grill, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, this Friday at Florida Keys Country Club, Saturday afternoons at the Postcard Inn and Saturday nights at the Key Colony Inn, and Sunday afternoons at Lorelei. www.johnbartus.com.

Below are a few tips to help you take advantage of this 3-day sales tax holiday. • Make a list. Start with a list of all the school supplies you need for each child as well as a list of wardrobe essentials each child will need for school. Don’t forget to add a few items for yourself on the list. After all, you deserve something new as well. (More on that later.) • Think ahead. If you’re buying clothing for kids, remember to buy not only for right now but also for the size they’ll be in a few months. There is no need for them to wear pants that resemble clam diggers just because they had a growth spurt.

• Take advantage of sales. Many stores are offering additional sales during the sales tax free weekend. The Banyan Tree Boutique in Islamorada is offering 25 percent off all clothing during this time. DLuxe Boutique in Islamorada is offering 15 percent off purchases over $25 and 25 percent off purchases over $100. Miss Monroe Boutique in Islamorada is offering a buy-one, get-one deal on their reversible tote bags. Available in 10 colors, these are the perfect backpack alternative for high school girls. • Stock up on basics. Basics are the building blocks of every wardrobe. For kids, this is T-shirts and shorts. For teenage girls and women, it means wardrobe staples such as jeans, black heels, white tees, sandals, shorts, underwear, and little black dresses. These are often the pieces that are worn the most and therefore may need to be updated or replaced on a yearly basis. (Remember, moms, treat yourself.)
