“August Heat” isn’t just a classic murder mystery novel, it’s here and outside our doors. The month of August feels like a 31-day slow broil. In fact, 2015 saw the hottest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months of JuneJuly-August in recorded history (since 1880). In the novel, the final line reads, “It is after eleven now. I shall be gone in less than an hour. But the heat is stifling. It is enough to send a man mad." To gauge how mad locals have become, the Weekly decided to ask…

“How do you cool off in the August heat?” “I like to cool off by having some of Sweet Savannah’s ice cream,” said Chelsey Stewart.

POOL POLL Council questions voters about community pool

M

arathon Mayor Mark Senmartin is putting the question straight to the voters. On the Aug. 30 ballot, there is a referendum question about a community pool for Marathon. It reads, “Should the City of Marathon construct and maintain a community pool, funded by taxes, assessments, user fees or any other permissible source of public funds?” At the time Senmartin called for the referendum question to be put on the ballot, there was some discussion of making it two questions. One, does the public want a pool? And, two, how to pay for it? In the end, the referendum question was consolidated into a single query. “The topic of the pool has been a discussion in this town for years and years. And it’s a very sensitive topic; the opinions are strong on both sides,” Senmartin said. “The only way to ensure that [the pool] is the best thing for Marathon, is to have the people in town decide it.” The referendum is non-binding. In laymen’s terms, that means it amounts to nothing more than a poll. Even if voters overwhelmingly approve the measure, it does not mean the City of Marathon is obligated to build a pool. However, if it is approved, the council is much more likely to budget funds to research the feasibility.

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 5, 2016

“It’s going to cost us money to find out what it’s going to cost us,” Senmartin said, estimating the fact-finding research could cost thousands. “But even if the voters overwhelming approve a community pool, it doesn’t mean the city and taxpayers have to foot the entire bill. There are other avenues to explore like public-private partnerships. And I think there are developers that are willing to contribute to help their potential projects succeed.” City Manager Chuck Lindsey has cautioned pool supporters to manage their expectations. “It’s great to see the passion and hard work of those supporting the pool effort, it's one of the things I love about this town. However, even if passed, everyone should understand it isn't something that could happen overnight. Adequate funding must be secured, and a fiscally responsible plan established.” An informal poll during a City of Marathon community event showed an overwhelming positive response for a pool. The Friends of the Marathon Community Pool Facebook page is also getting more positive than negatives. Brad Rose of Marathon wrote, “We need this so badly! Twenty-five meter lap lanes available all day, yes to a slide and a smaller toddler pool with some fun features for the kids.” Key Colony Beach resident Leslie Evans countered with the need for affordable housing as a more pressing need for the city of Marathon.

Solar tax break on the ballot

K

eys voters will have the opportunity to vote on a state constitutional amendment in August. If passed, homeowners would have the opportunity to claim the cost of a solar installation on their tangible personal property taxes. A typical single-family home solar installation in the Keys costs between $30,000 and $40,000. According to ballotpedia.com, “A vote ‘for’ Amendment 4 supports providing tax exemptions for solar power and other renewable energy equipment included in home values for property taxes.” If approved, the tax exemption would expire in 20 years. While that’s significant, there is another, related bill on the ballot in November that is perhaps more important. Amendment 1 solidifies homeowners’ rights to own or lease solar energy panels, but may call into question their rights to sell extra energy back to the local utility company. Bob Williams, co-owner of SALT based in the Middle Keys, said that while solar energy technology is capable of allowing homeowners the ability to live “off the grid,” there is a downside to that. “They lose the benefit of being able to sell the energy back to the local utility,” Williams said. “Both the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative and Keys Energy both give homeowners money back for power produced that goes on the grid. It’s called net metering. If homeowners lose the benefit, not only does that mean dollars, it also means the community loses the benefit of using that solar power.” Amendment 4 would also open the door for solar companies to install panels on private homes and sell the energy back to the local utility. Current Florida law states that only a few utilities, such as Florida Power & Light, may sell power directly to consumers. Florida Keys Electric Cooperative buys its power from Florida Power & Light. Keys Energy Services buys its energy from Florida Municipal Power Agency. If both measures pass, homeowners would not only receive a tax break, it would also expand the market for solar energy.

In 2013, more than 6 million pounds of lobster was harvested in Florida, a high point in recent years.

SEASON OPENER

Local lobster fishermen serve global market

T

he economic importance of the spiny lobster in South Florida cannot be understated. According to the FWC, since 2000, the average lobster harvest for Florida has been between 3.4 and 5.8 million pounds per season. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the first pull of lobster season will begin, and the overall attitude is positive. “Roughly four years ago we were averaging about $12 a pound. We’ve seen a dip in the price range since then,” said Capt. Ryan Irwin of Marathon. “The price was a bit more inflated in the past and looking forward, we’ll more than likely see it return to normal.” Last year’s market price averaged approximately $10.50, with frozen product at around $7.50, and live lobster reaching as high as $15.50. Irwin says the beginning of September is often accompanied with rising prices. “By the end of the month the prices peak,” he said. Holidays, especially those in Asian cultures, also trigger price hikes, which Irwin says local fisherman have grown to anticipate. Tom Hill, co-owner of Key Largo Fisheries, has come to understand the factors influencing the global market Of the 475,000 for lobsters. “The market’s pricing can be aflobster traps fected by a number of things includstatewide, ing prices of Australian tails, Brazilian approximately tail prices, or our Cuban competitor’s 350,000 are in the prices in Europe. The Keys produces only a portion of the Caribbean Basin’s Florida Keys. production and local fisherman are competing more and more with countries like Cuba, Honduras and Nicaragua.” For 44 years, the family-owned Key Largo Fisheries has distributed the commodity both nationally and internationally. The fishery and the captains who fish exclusively for it are anticipating a productive year. Quite a bit of their lobster is distributed to Asia, while some make their way back to the ocean – this time as dinner served on numerous cruise ships. Bill Kelly, executive director of the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association, says barring major storms, the Florida Keys is looking forward to another good season. “We’ve seen an increase in the recruitment of juvenile lobster, and that bodes well for commercial fisherman,” said Kelly. “The biggest deterrent are tropical storms and hurricanes for two reasons — it affects commercial fishing gear or moves it around, and it disrupts migratory patterns of lobster.” The Florida Key’s location in the Caribbean basin hasn’t seen an active hurricane season in recent years. This may account, in part, for the record high catches because, Kelly said, most of the lobster found in the Keys originates in the Caribbean basin, spends three to five months traveling to the Keys, then take a year to mature.

Lionfish and lobster tournament

T

ilden’s Scuba Center in Marathon hosted its annual Spines and Spiny tournament during lobster mini season to help raise funds for Cathy McCoy, a local well-loved Marathon woman battling cancer. The annual tournament has lobster harversters competing for biggest, most and smallest lionfish to help control the invasive fish at local dive spots. The tournament also has a lobster component because, you know, lionfish and lobster are both delicious. — Weekly Staff report KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly 1. The Spines and Spiny Tournament benefited Cathy McCoy, a Marathon woman who has been battling cancer (and is well loved by everyone who knows her.) Her husband Jim was on hand to help Tilden’s event host Wendy Hall. 2. Roger Parson holds up his first place biggest lobster – what a monster! 3. FWC lionfish outreach coordinator Kali Spurgin from Tallahassee helps local researcher Jenny Herpig, left, measure and count lionfish. 4. Participants catch boatloads of lionfish. However, several divers said they didn’t see any of the invasive species on their dives — a positive sign that local lionfish control is succeeding.

Martin Lawrence Runyon

unyon — or “Hammer” as he’s known to all — is a fixture around town. He recently switched from the City of Marathon’s Public Works Department over to the Marathon Fire House as logistics officer — building maintenance, vehicle maintenance, etc. For nine years, he was instrumental in making sure the City’s Christmas decorations were just so, and doing the last-minute spit and polish on Sombrero Beach in time for the Fourth of July celebration.

1. Full name: Martin Lawrence Runyon. 2. Nickname: Hammer, as in MC Hammer, you can’t touch this. 3. Are you missing a digit? Yes, the middle finger of my right hand. A lot of people think that’s why I’m called hammer, because it was an accident with a hammer drill. But no, it was a construction accident. They took me up to Miami to reattach it, but the doctors said it would have been “locked” in the up position at all times. [Laughing] I didn’t think that was a good idea. 4. What was the first thing you said after the accident? Susan, my wife, is going to kill me. 5. Does everyone know you by Hammer? There are like three people in town that call me Martin. 6. What do you collect? Shot glasses and all Hard Rock shot glasses, amongst many other things. 7. Who is going to put up the City’s Christmas lights this year? I don’t know, we’ll see. 8. How likely is it that you will sneak out of your house this season to “fix” the lights someone else put up? Very likely. 9. What TV show is your favorite? “Game of Thrones.”

10. Ketchup or mustard? Mustard 11. What do you love about Marathon? My boat sank during Katrina (with me on it) and after two days in the drink when we had cleaned up everything else, a lot of my friends came over and helped me flip it, then pull it out of the water. Then they helped get it running. Marathon may be a small town but it has a huge heart. 12. Where did you propose to your wife? On top of a stand-up roller coaster. It’s the first and last time she ever rode one. 13. Have you ever shaved that ’stache? Twice, once because I meant to and the other time by accident. 14. What did you say to Aaron Grube when he told you to shave that ’stache? You will have to deal with Susan on that one. 15. Who is your best friend? My wife, Susan. 16. What’s your motto? Just because your are old on the outside does not mean you are on the inside. 17. Dave Sabo (Skid Row) and Slash (Guns N’ Roses) are both drowning; who do you save first? I will get back with you on that one. 18. My secret talent is … sewing. 19. My guilty pleasure is … Demi Lovato. 20. My pet peeve is … paying for a cup of coffee with a debit card.

SEA LICE

Baby jellyfish are responsible for the itch THERESA JAVA

theresa@keysweekly.com

O

ur pristine waters are inviting and warm year-round, but there are some stinging perils lying just below the surface. "Swimmer's itch" or “seabather’s eruption” is a common ailment in the Florida Keys. A sea lice rash is characterized by red itchy skin – raised obscure scratch patterns that are blotchy and burn after itching. Sea lice are not the aquatic version of grade-school head lice. They are baby jellyfish, the size of a sand granule. It's hard to determine which kind of jellyfish exactly with the naked eye; they’re that small. “They are either gastropod larvae to a type of jellyfish or a type of hydroid,” said Dr. Dave Vaughan, the executive director at the local Mote Marine Laboratory. Hydroids are best described as colonies of tiny stinging jellies. They look like inverted jellyfish attached to a feather- or seaweed-like base. In the Keys, sea lice are abundant on submerged surfaces, primarily seagrass, but also seaweed, pilings, debris, etc. When the water is stirred up, they sting. For swimmers treading water, that usually means a ring-around-the-neck rash. For waders, sea lice most commonly attack around the midriff, or in your bathing suit, or unmentionable spots. When asked if he’d ever suffered sea lice, FWC Officer Robert Dube said, “Oh, man, that is the worst. It itches like three days later and in all your crevices. It gets in all your parts. It looks like chicken pox.” Sometimes the onset of the rash can be felt while still in the water, but more often the rash reaches its peak itchiness two to four hours after getting out of the water. It can last up to two weeks. Lou Howell, a Key Largo scuba diver, said, “Sea lice is like chiggers on steroids. The more you scratch, the more they itch, it’s awful. But they haven’t seemed to be that bad in the last few years. They peak from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, and about eight years ago or so, there were so many, you could just feel them hitting you in the water as tiny as they are.” Sea lice have a few known predators — sea slugs, filefishes, puffers. Next time you pull up a slug, or a puffer, have the good grace to say “thank you.”

The other jellies • One of the deadliest varieties of jellyfish is the Box jellyfish, which contains toxins that attack the heart, nervous system, and skin cells. There are four species of the Jellyfish in Florida, but the most lethal type is only found in Australia. Like the other jellyfish listed below, the sting is most likely to affect those with predilections to allergic responses. The species is virtually clear and almost invisible to the human eye. • The Portuguese man-of-war which technically isn’t a jellyfish, but very similar. It’s tentacles can extend 30 to 100 feet. Although, not as fatal as the box jelly, it can deliver a significant welting blow. Stings are painful, but not necessarily serious unless the swimmer has an allergic reaction. Those allergic to bee stings are most susceptible. • Because of the Cassiopeia jellyfish’s anatomy, it’s most commonly mistaken for a sea anemone. It is, in fact, an upside down jellyfish that resembles a moving, undulating plant. Yes, it stings, too. It’s most commonly found in shallow lagoons and around mangroves.

Sea lice remedy: add a teaspoon of vinegar to water and rinse. — Dr. Dave Vaughan, Mote Marine Lab

Stations were set up for kids to be able learn from various state park rangers and volunteers about their role in conservation and preservation. At one station, kids decorated magnets emblazoned with phrases such as “recycle” and “turn off the faucet.” At another, they used sea grape leaves to make “postcards from paradise.” “We teach kids how the grapes are edible, help prevent beach erosion, and the role they play in protecting turtle hatchlings from predators,” said Ranger Thea Knott. − Weekly Staff report

n Aug. 2, Monroe County Sheriff's Office sponsored this year’s National Night Out event at Stanley Switlik. Throughout the Keys, four events were held to generate support for local anti-crime programs and to strengthen police-community partnerships. The Marathon event featured food, refreshments, giveaways, and members from a variety of institutions, divisions, departments of law enforcement and public service, as well as others involved in the public safety of the Florida Keys. The goal of National Night Out is to bring communities together to discuss how to make neighborhoods safer, cleaner, and more secure. “This yearly event is an important one for our agency. We get the opportunity to meet the people we are charged with serving and protecting in a less formal, more fun setting,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. — Weekly Staff report GABRIEL SANCHEZ/Keys Weekly

M

angrove Mama’s has been dishing up favorites for the past 30 years on Sugarloaf Key. The restaurant was named, befittingly, after a boat marooned in front of the establishment. Songs have since been written about the treasured landmark and some of its famous bartenders and patrons. The building once housed a train stop in 1909 along Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad. "I would say Bailey (the owner's golden retriever) is an excellent host," said frequent diner and Key West’s U.S. Coast Guardsman Luke Gerardot. “And, the food is excellent." Gerardot frequents the Sunday brunch and appreciates the military discount the owners offer. Appetizers include Shrimp St. Jacques, lobster bites and Wisconsin cheese curds. The lunch menu has a lobster Reuben with battered and fried lobster, traditional Swiss cheese, slaw and tarter on rye

Mama's famous eggs benedicts. The restaurant offers both air conditioning and outside patio dining.

bread. Also on the menu, the blackened mahi tacos are served with homemade potato salad. For dinner, start with a bowl of award-winning conch chowder before venturing into plantain-encrusted hogfish territory, served with a banana rum sauce. Or try the seafood pasta served with lobster, shrimp, scallops in a light Alfredo sauce over linguine. For non-seafood eaters, Mangrove Mama's is known for its grilled favorites like baby back ribs, rib eye steaks and pork chops. Finish off the meal with a slice of their famous Key Lime pie. Every restaurant in the Keys says they have the best key lime pie, but this one, done traditionally, truly hits the spot. They also offer delivered pizza to the surrounding neighborhoods — such as Venture Out, Lazy Lakes and the KOA — after 4:30 p.m. But, it’s probably better to stop in so as to enjoy the frequent live entertainment by the likes of Emily Springsteen.

F

lorida Keys Community College (FKCC) was ranked 18th among the top community colleges in the nation in 2016 by SmartAsset.com, an investment website. SmartAsset.com analyzed 565 two-year colleges and ranked them by looking at four factors: the student-faculty ratio; the graduation and transfer rate; The cost of in-state tuition and fees; and the ratio of graduates’ median starting salaries to the full cost of attendance. SmartAsset.com concluded that that the top colleges “provide their students with an inexpensive, world-class education and a good return on investment.” “This national ranking is a welcome recognition for FKCC’s continued efforts to provide educational and economic opportunities for our students and our community,” said Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, FKCC’s President and CEO. “Our graduates receive some of the highest first year incomes of all graduates of Florida’s State Colleges because our educational and training opportunities equip them with the tools to help them make smart decisions about their education and career plans.” FKCC offers a variety of two-year degrees and certificates in fields such as hospitality, ecotourism, marine science, marine engineering, diving, business, health, and public safety. “We work closely with all manner of industries to ensure students are well-trained for viable, high-paying careers that fuel our economy and workforce,” Gueverra added. FKCC was one of only two colleges in Florida to make SmartAsset.com’s ranking; the other was Tallahassee Community College. — Contributed

Even More Songs I’d Like To Hear Never Again

Pesky earworms, ear parasites, ear invaders…

T

he one topic that seems to provoke endless debate and more than a few arguments that I’ve written about over the past several years is the category of Songs I’d Like To Hear Never Again. It’s really funny how subjective this topic is, and how one person’s ear trash is another’s ear treasure. But most of us agree that music is a truly important part of this life. Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Unless it’s a song that you just can’t stand. Here are some more from my personal list, and WARNING – this column may induce your brain to remember potentially unpleasant music! • “MacArthur’s Park” – Richard Harris or Donna Summer. Whether it’s the overblown and melodramatic original version, or the disco remake from the dreaded 1970s, this song’s imagery of a cake left in the rain to melt is simply and utterly hideous. Why would someone leave a cake out in the rain? Why did it take so long to bake? And JOHN why should I care? BARTUS • “(You’re) Having My Baby” – Paul Anka. What really needs to be said about this one? This song went all the is a City Council way to Number One in 1974… but in my ears, it’s Number member and a Two. former Mayor of • Almost any Madonna song – Madonna. There. the City of Marathon. John is also • “Ice Ice Baby” – Vanilla Ice. Even if you like rap music, a musician who chances are that you don’t like this blatant ripoff of “Under performs around Pressure” by David Bowie and Queen. A Houston Press town at various critic perhaps summed it up best when he said that the establishments. song “…set back the cause of white people in hip-hop a decade.” It makes one really long for the legitimacy of M.C. Hammer… • “My Humps” – Black Eyed Peas. I really can’t believe I didn’t write about this one before now. This might go down as one of the worst songs in this new millennium, even if you do care about all that junk in her trunk and her lovely lady lumps. Although the song might work as a jingle for Camel cigarettes… • “Two Princes” – Spin Doctors. I really can’t believe I didn’t write about this one before, either. This song was so overplayed by radios and jukeboxes and bands back in the 1980s. Every time the song would start, I threw up a little in my mouth. Combine a bunch of guys fresh from the dumpster with an infectious beat, an annoying melody, and insipid lyrics, and you have a recipe for pop success! • “Stupid Hoe” – Nicki Minaj. This talentless aggregation of flesh and bones really is a little bit misogynist. If a man had written and rapped these lyrics, he would be derided as a chauvinist pig… oh. It seems that woman-bashing happens all the time in hip-hop. Regardless of the horrifyingly awful lyrics, a blogger came up with an amazingly accurate description of the music: “The first reason this is the most repulsive song ever is the beat. That little sound in the background sounds like Optimus Prime banging a washing machine.” What a waste of recording studio time and equipment. • “Achy Breaky Heart” – Billy Ray Cyrus. Long before he spawned daughter Miley and pushed her onto an unsuspecting world, Billy Ray contaminated the airwaves with this abomination back in 1992. This song is clever in a backwards kind of way, like a box turtle seems clever to a slug. This song was so annoying… and it was another perfect song for William “She Bangs” Hung to cover, which he did in 2005. Again, thanks for coming along! Needless to say, this won’t be the last installment of Songs I Care To Hear Never Again! • • • • • John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek Bar & Grill, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, this Friday at with Jade Storm at the Lorelei, Saturday afternoons at the Postcard Inn and Saturday nights at the Key Colony Inn, and Sunday afternoons at Lorelei. www.johnbartus.com.

ruising up to the drive through at Curly's Coffee, 'boy'rista Casey Jinks greets customers with a great big grin hoping to help start his customer's days off on the right foot. His favorite jumpstart for the morning is the iced caramel latte. The latte, served with fresh brewed espresso and real caramel, not the pumped stuff, gets right to work. "We have really great coffee here," he said. "We use really great ingredients." They also offer special milks like almond, soy, and lactose-free milk. When Jinks isn't working, he is hanging out with his fiancé and their dogs while helping plan their September wedding. They also enjoy boating and paddle boarding whenever they have the chance. His favorite part of working at Curly's is the family-like atmosphere they have. "It always feels like home," he said. He’s been there on and off for the past six years since they opened. The drive through coffee shop is located at 11601 Overseas Hwy, Marathon.

THE CATMAN Dominique LeFort speaks ‘cat’ and French KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

S

kristen@keysweekly.com

hortly after the award winners for the Bubbas were announced, The Weekly promptly received an email from one of Dominique “The Catman” LeFort’s adoring fans. “Why wasn’t The Catman on the list of most famous celebrities?” Jason Dunkle of Pennsylvania wrote. “You know what the two most frequent questions at Mallory Square are? Where are the bathrooms? And, where is The Catman?” Dunkle and his fiancé Mona hunt The Catman down each year during their vacation, and most Key Westers have seen The Catman throughout the years when friends and family come to visit. Heck, the Frenchman and his catpack have been performing in Key West since 1981. He totes his four performing cats to Mallory Square, a short walk from his home on Southard Street. His three oldest just retired as they are about to celebrate their 18th birthday in September. “They were born during Hurricane Georges,” LeFort said, snuggling them at his home. All seven cats — with names like Chopin, George, Hannibal and Jester — are rescues. So how does being The Catman pay? Well, LeFort helped pay his daughter’s way through undergrad at UCLA and graduate school at Cornell. She has a degree in nuclear physics. Not bad for a man

whose roots started with clowning around in France. “I couldn’t do what I love without the people who support the cats and me, they helped me support her,” he said. The cats are all fluent in French, and whenever they need a break from the seven-night-a-week gig, they take it. If the cats don’t want to take a jump, or tightrope walk, he puts his background to the test and performs alone for the evening. As for a Bubba award for The Catman, Dunkle says he will be campaigning for LeFort’s win for next year’s best local celebrity. “He deserves this recognition,” said Dunkle. “His fellow vendors have told us he really is the most popular celebrity in Key West, and he is truly a nice person.” To see LeFort and his famous cats, they perform nightly at Mallory Square for 25 minutes before sunset, take a 15-minute break to soak in the setting sun, and then perform for 25 more minutes.
