The gallery’s specialty is bringing collectible and quality fine art together created by artists from around the world. “The most rewarding part about owning the gallery has definitely been getting to know so many interesting people from all over the world. Many of our collectors have become lifelong friends,” said owner Kellie Alpert. “I’m proud of what the gallery has brought to the community too. One of my favorite things we do is bring the artists into town for live painting demonstrations so that residents and collectors can meet them and watch them create in person. Many times it’s a once-in-alifetime opportunity that people talk about for years.” Key West Gallery’s inventory includes originals as well as hand-embellished limited editions. The gallery has a selection of fine art ranging in styles and genres including old master’s work, impressionism, modern, abstract, watercolors, oils, acrylics and sculptures. For a selection of artwork available at Key West Gallery visit www.keywestgallery.com or stop by its storefront at 601 Duval St., Key West. WEEKLY INTERVIEW

KEY WEST WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

C

ory Oliver encourages children by telling them they are superheroes. But it is his office that is filled with Superman paraphernalia gifted to him by his students and colleagues, a noticeable accolade. In person, Oliver is quiet, sly and keeps a watchful eye on his surroundings; an unassuming leader but ever present. Those characteristics have helped the Key West Collegiate Academy, a charter school based at Florida Keys Community College, grow its student body to 90 students since Oliver took over in 2013. Born in Southern Illinois, Oliver attended SIUC for his Bachelor’s in English, master’s program in rhetoric and composition, and Florida Atlantic University for an Educational Leadership Degree. In between schooling, Oliver served as U.S. Army B12 (Combat Engineer) to naturally, “Blow $!#% up.” His bookshelves are filled with Shakespeare and Star Wars, and when asked why he works with kids, “Too many adults let me down,” Oliver said genuinely. Oliver, like a proud parent, attributes and defers to the kids and teachers for the Academy’s success. With a yearly growth rate of 6-13 percent, this year the Academy has achieved the highest writing and biology scores in the past three years and tied Coral Shores this year with highest reading scores. Only three points away from an A rating, Oliver has no doubt they will do even better next year. Maybe it’s because he hand writes Christmas cards to each student or spends six days a week at school, or maybe just because he is not going to let his kids down.

questions with

CORY OLIVER

The Collegiate Academy Principal, a.k.a. Superhero 1. Full Name? Cory Oliver. 2. Worst nickname? Bull (because when I shave my head I looked like the guy from “Night Court”). 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Dr. King so I could ask him how he could help solve today’s pressing issues. 4. If you could remove one person from any media contact, who would it be? The Kardashians. They don’t appear to have any real talents. 5. Who is your celebrity crush and why? I don’t have celebrity crushes because I’m a celebrity. 6. What makes you laugh at work? My students. Even high school students can make you laugh. 7. Which TV character is your alter ego? Everyone says Superman. Though I identify more with Evan from “Penny Dreadful” because of his constant battle with himself. 8. What is your nerdiest passion? I do love poetry. 9. What is one thing that always, always makes you happy? Music. 10. If invisible what would you do? Be EXTREMELY wealthy.

11.What were your first thoughts this morning? God, my back hurts. Why do I have gray hair? Crap I’m old. 12. Favorite guilty pleasure? Listening to ’80’s hair metal. 13. Best/ funniest Key West siting or encounter you’ve ever had? I had breakfast with Dale Jr. once. And during a festival one year, I got free parking and escorted to the head of the parade because they thought I was Blake Shelton. 14. Worst job you ever had? This one. Not really. I was a pig farmer in high school and if you’ve ever pig farmed, you know how hard it is to get a prom date.

15. If you could change someone’s opinion, what would it be? We all matter. Stop acting like you matter more. 16. Fill in the blanks: I will change socks tomorrow. Just kidding. No one wears socks in Key West. 17. Who would you have your last meal with? My kids. Finish these sentences: 18. Living in Key West … takes patience. 19. My autobiography would be titled … I would steal the title “A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young” from Eric Church’s song. 20. When I go, I will go … windows down, music up, 100 mph.

BOUND FOR POLAND Youth exchange student to also be filmed for documentary HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

S

ixteen-year-old Rachel Wilcox is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. With poise and a devastating smile, Wilcox will travel to Poland to attend school for an entire year, sans her family — Rob Wilcox and Dr. Sharon Ward and her two brothers. She will live with a host family, a single mother named Elwira, and not return back to Key West until next July. The trip has taken immense preparation. Since last December she has doubled her school work in order to save her place as senior upon returning and added three Polish language lessons a week, a language she never had spoken before this year. But Wilcox’s journey isn’t just about hard work or a sense of adventure, it’s a part of a larger story that someday will be told nationally. It started when Wilcox was looking for a way to challenge herself outside of high school. After a lengthy application process, she was the only student in Monroe County chosen to go to school in Olszten, Poland, as a part of the National Rotary Youth Exchange program and received a generous $1,000 stipend from the Key West Rotary Club to help with expenses. “I am excited about another culture and meeting new people, but dreading the first day of school. I have grown up with the same people my whole life,” Wilcox said with nervous excitement. But she forgot to mention a significant detail: the documentary film crew following her. Let’s add modest to the list of endearing qualities about Wilcox. She will be featured in a documentary based on the best selling novel, “The Smartest Kids

Key West’s Rachel Wilcox, 16, has been practicing her Polish for the past eight months.

“I am excited about another culture and meeting new people, but dreading the first day of school. I have grown up with the same people my whole life,”

in the World: And How They Got That Way” by Amanda Ripley. The original book was a study of American kids in three exemplary school systems: Finland, South Korea and Poland. Wilcox was chosen to be documented as a bright young American entering the Polish school system. Filming has already begun in Key West and Wilcox is a natural, according to her mother, beloved local OB/GYN, Dr. Ward. “I’m not nervous or scared. She’s a great kid and this will change her life forever. I am excited and just a little bit jealous,” said Dr. Ward with pride. Headed out into the unknown, and having it filmed, takes courage and grace, two qualities Wilcox already has and will serve her well on her journey ahead.

Porter: Teachers ready for start SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

A

week before the start of the school year, Dr. Ramon Dawkins, executive director of Human Resources for Monroe County Schools, reported that there were just three teaching positions left to fill. That is the result of a herculean effort because Monroe County School District officials were tasked with filling more than 100 positions. “We lose about 100 teachers every year, on average,” said Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter. He said with 580 teachers districtwide, that represents a turnover rate of about 17 percent. The caliber of teachers, he said, is outstanding. “This year we recruited a high number of teachers with more than 10 years of experience,” Porter said. “We’re attracting a different level of teacher; they are not all brand new, fresh from college.” Many of them, Dr. Dawkins said, have South Florida roots, something he hopes will make the new teacher’s transition to the Florida Keys a little easier. They are more likely to be aware of the unique environment and challenges such as affordable housing. Porter said the school district is expecting about 8,000 students this year, similar to previous years. The final number probably will not be established until the beginning of September. “The students don’t always show up in the grade you were projecting, or place. We don’t worry on the first day because we figure that by Labor Day we have everybody that we’re going to see,” he said. The other concern at the start of the school year, is the number of bus drivers. According to Randy Fabal, supervisor of transportation, the district has filled all the positions except for one in Marathon and one on Sugarloaf. Each driving position is backed up by a substitute driver.“But we have people who are in the process of training,” Fabel said. “It’s a minimum 40 hours of training to become a driver.” There will be four new buses on the road this year, in addition, three more are on order for the next school year. Of the buses added to the fleet this year, three can accommodate students with disabilities (wheelchair).

(Editor’s note: The Weekly Newspapers turned the tables on school administrators and teacher this year. Instead of assigning students the inevitable “What I Did On My Summer Vacation” essay, the paper asked the grownups to write their own stories. We give them all extra points for good spelling, grammar, originality and timeliness — A+!)

My summer was short as I worked most of the time, however, I was able to enjoy family time and two very special occasions. My granddaughter, Leilani Barnes, turned two years old and we had wonderful birthday fun with family, friends and lots of water activities. I got married in May, so my husband Randy and I — along with 14 other dear friends — enjoyed a short Bahamas cruise that was a combined honeymoon and Randy’s 50th birthday celebration. Shorter work days, weekends on the boat and a slower pace marked the month of July and now I am refreshed and ready for the 2016-2017 Key West High school year to begin!

Schooner Wharf Bar’s 23rd Annual Battle of Bars

ast Sunday, Schooner Wharf Bar hosted the 23rd annual Battle of the Bars. Teams of local bartenders, waitstaff and owners from Key West’s favorite establishments came out to do battle and raise money for two terrific causes, The Southernmost Boys and Girls Club and Habitat For Humanity. Fully costumed and outfitted, teams ran the obstacle in sweltering heat and quenched their thirst for beer and championship. Hangover Hospital was on hand with a generous gift certificate for the winners, but for these seasoned staffers and two charities, there were no losers. Bourbon Boozers from Bourbon St. Pub took home the championship title, along with a trophy and bragging rights, with a final round time of 1 minute, 53 seconds. Team Salute! Pride from Salute! On the Beach captured second place, and third place went to Half Shell Raw Bar's Raw Bar Rowdies. An impressive $18,080 was raised bringing the 23-year total to $319,667. — Weekly Staff report

Through pollution, overfishing, and invasive species, our ecosystem is being systematically destroyed. We need to recycle more, regulate fishing and create artificial reefs. What are your plans after high school? To go to college and study biology. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Yes, if I can. I was born here and lived here my whole life. What are your plans this summer? I will be traveling to Japan for a month with The Experiment in International Living. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… the importance of working hard.

ritically acclaimed comedians Suede and Vickie Shaw will be joined by pianist Larry Smith at the Key West Theater on Sept

10th. The much-anticipated Key West Womenfest takes place in early September and the Key West Theater announced some major star power to coincide with the celebration. Critically acclaimed comedian, Suede, will take center stage on the evening. According to her bio, Suede is a singer and multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, trumpet and guitar - but voice is her first instrument and entertaining is clearly her first love. The Boston Globe calls Suede "Wicked exciting!" and NY press says “she's like Adele meets Diana Krall meets Bette Midler, sassy, smooth and intoxicating.” And if that’s not enough, Suede was also the opening act for the legendary Joan Rivers. Today Suede tours nationally and internationally, filling rooms like NYC's famous Birdland, Boston's Scullers Jazz Club, Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, MD, Feinstein's in San Francisco, has played The Kennedy Center and more. She has also headlined on over 100 Olivia private chartered Cruises.

Garth Brooks, 19 Adele, 18 Usher, 18 Whitney Houston, 16 Suede will be joined by Vickie Shaw, who audiences might recognize from the movie "Laughing Matters More,” along with appearances on Comedy Central. Her television resume also boasts four comedy specials on the LOGO Channel and TV tenure on Late In Life Lesbians, Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen--and many more. And Larry Smith, the nationally acclaimed musician who now calls Key West home, will serve as the pianist for the evening. While Larry’s work is recognized throughout the music world, he spends much of his time composing, performing and mentoring in Key West. Visiting in 1975 for some drunken fun, she moved here in 1986 full time. “I loved that it was quiet and everyone was nice and there was no snow,” she said of her New England roots. She said her favorite cocktail to shake up at Conch Town is the Walk The Plank punch. It is made with five different flavors of rum with a little bit of pineapple and cranberry juice and it’s a doozie. “My favorite part of working here is that it is all locals, and all my customers have become my friends” she said. “And, it’s airconditioned.” Turner said she thinks Conch Town offers the longest happy hour in town from 2 to 8 p.m. and they have two pool tables. When she isn’t working, she likes sleeping, reading and going out boating. She especially likes traveling whenever she gets a chance.

t’s not what you think. And, it’s really hard to do. You know, holding your body weight up by your ankles and making it look like it’s the easiest thing in the world? Select few athletes can make Pole Dancing appear doable, fun and the best work out in the world. Ask Kelly Goss, professional Pole Dance Competitor and instructor at Gravity Fitness in Key West. Watching Goss almost makes one believe anyone can have the grace and strength to dance on a pole WITH A SMILE. Pole Dance as a sport is catching on worldwide as beginners and professionals alike are choosing this fitness regime as the sexier side of getting in shape. By definition, Pole Dancing combines dance and acrobatics centered on a vertical pole providing both an aerobic and anaerobic workout. The bonus? You can keep your heels on if you like. “When I first started I was a party animal and smoked cigarettes,” Goss admitted. “I couldn't lift my feet off the floor while holding the pole or even come close to attaining anything even close to a split.” Now, Goss attributes her confidence to her commitment, hours of training and addictiveness of the sport. She believes anyone can start off slow and learn pole dancing in progressions, citing her own achievements as inspiration. Since 2012, Goss placed fifth in the US qualifying for International Pole Sport Federation (IPSF) last year. This year she was first runner up to for Worlds, and is technically third in the U.S. in that organization. She also has won and placed in a few different performance-based competitions in Florida last year. Goss’s winning philosophy: “You can do anything you set your mind to. Your thoughts control your reality. It's never too late. You are worth it.” The sport isn’t to be confused with exotic dancing or taking off your clothes. It seems the only thing she has “stripped” is her insecurity and negativity. Goss is bringing the show to the Key West Theater, Oct. 1, as Gravity is hosting its fifth annual pole show to raise money for the local SPCA. There will be six champion performers/instructors from all over the world, as well as Goss and her students, performing. Who knows? It could be everyone’s next favorite sport.

TRAP LIFE

New board for Foster/ Adoptive Association Cousins, 15-year-old Demi Stiglitz, front, and 15-year-old Peder Bidonne drop traps on the opening day of season, Aug. 1.

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

O

n summer break, the alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m., and two Key West High School soon-to-be sophomores open their eyes. Cousins Demi Stiglitz and Peder Bidonne, both 15, brush their teeth, put on a little deodorant and climb into dad Richie Stiglitz’s truck. From there, they sleep for the 30-minute ride to Marathon from their Sugarloaf house, hope dad stops for quick breakfast from The Stuffed Pig, and by 5:30 a.m. they are fishing. “We’ve been on-and-popping since we were 12 years old,” said Demi, while sitting at the dinner table covered in fresh fried grouper after a long day on the boat. “Straight saving money.” The two are saving their money from their 500 lobster traps and 800 crab traps to buy their own boat. They’ve been borrowing the “Catch-NLike Crazy” for the past three years and made $70,000 last year manning the 24-foot boat solo. What they’ll name their new boat, they don’t know yet. They have no interest in video games, only fishing, and sometimes Miami Heat basketball. “They didn’t go to preschool,” said commercial fisherman Richie Stiglitz, “they were out on the boat fishing with me. They learned a lot traveling with me from Naples, to Key West, to the Tortugas and back.” Demi used to play football, but said all he ever thought about was fishing. He hopes to go to college for marine mechanics after graduation so he can fix his own boat when issues arise. Peder just wants to fish. When school starts, they will work the traps only on the weekends, but during the summer they are out every day. “We have to have A’s, B’s, and C’s,” said Demi. “If not, dad won’t let us go.” Both keep their grades high so they won’t be docked for a semester. The two trade off pulling traps and captaining the boat. And, when they aren’t trapping, they love spearfishing and going to the sandbar. Both have their learner’s permits for driving on the road, but have had their boater’s license since they were 10. Fishing out of Keys Fisheries in Marathon, Richie says he sits on the dock in the evenings waiting for the kid’s boat lights to appear over the horizon. They said their only close calls have been lightning strikes, and waterspouts. But dad says he never worries about them. “All the fishermen watch out for them,” he said. “These two boys right here are true watermen.”

F

rom April 2015 to April 2016, approximately 100 Monroe County children were placed in foster care. Children can sometimes be moved in the middle of the night and arrive in a new environment with few belongings. “Many social service agencies are limited to the amount of financial assistance they can give children and their families,” said FKFAPA Chairman Richard Puente. “Our efforts are geared to supplement these needs with both financial and material assistance where and when we can.” With a mission statement of “Every Child Matters,” the Florida Keys Foster/Adoptive Parent Association (FKFAPA) was formed as a non-profit organization in 2003 to network with social service agencies on behalf of foster, adoptive and at-risk children and their caregivers. “I am grateful to the association for looking at what the parents and family members need,” said Wesley House CEO Beth Barrett. “Their officers and members have worked extremely hard to create a viable and thriving support system to families who have opened their homes to foster and adoptive children.“ This past Saturday, the FKFAPA held their annual meeting at the Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House to swear in a new board of directors and outline plans for the new year. Four girls return from national tourney

F

our girls from the Florida Keys recently returned from the USA Elite Select All American Games in Orlando — Isabella Perez, Ariadna Ruiz and Gracie Wood of Key West and Cecily Ozbun of Marathon. It’s a highly competitive tournament featuring players from around the country and all the girls had to tryout in order to be selected. The four girls played on separate teams, with players from a mix of other regions, all coached by college student athletes. “It was a phenomenal experience,” said Tara Wood, Gracie’s mom. “It was a single-elimination, national tournament. They only had one practice together before the game started and the team was coached by a college player. It was an amazing, fantastic experience.” Gracie played in the U-14 bracket and her team won that championship. Isabella Perez’s U-11 team made it all the way to the finals, only to be beat. “Isabella hit a walk off triple in a semifinal game tied 6 to 6 with her at the plate to win the game 7 to 6,” said proud mom Terese. “She was the starting catcher on her team and her defense was ‘lights out’ the whole tournament.” Ariadna Ruiz played in the U-12 bracket and her team won the first two games, but lost in the semifinals, placing third. Cecily Ozbun played in the U-13 bracket and, unfortunately, her team was bested early in the tournament.

The games were played in the ESPN World Wide Sports Arena in Orlando the first week of August. “On Saturday, when the games were over, we finally went to the parks. It was a big week,” said Angela Ozbun, Cecily’s mom. “It was a really good experience.”

M

angrove Mama’s has been dishing up favorites for the past 30 years on Sugarloaf Key. The restaurant was named, befittingly, after a boat marooned in front of the establishment. Songs have since been written about the treasured landmark and some of its famous bartenders and patrons. The building once housed a train stop in 1909 along Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad. "I would say Bailey (the owner's golden retriever) is an excellent host," said frequent diner and Key West’s U.S. Coast Guardsman Luke Gerardot. “And, the food is excellent." Gerardot frequents the Sunday brunch and appreciates the military discount the owners offer. Appetizers include Shrimp St. Jacques, lobster bites and Wisconsin cheese curds. The lunch menu has a lobster Reuben with battered and fried lobster, traditional Swiss cheese, slaw and tarter on rye

Mama's famous eggs benedicts. The restaurant offers both air conditioning and outside patio dining.

bread. Also on the menu, the blackened mahi tacos are served with homemade potato salad. For dinner, start with a bowl of award-winning conch chowder before venturing into plantain-encrusted hogfish territory, served with a banana rum sauce. Or try the seafood pasta served with lobster, shrimp, scallops in a light Alfredo sauce over linguine. For non-seafood eaters, Mangrove Mama's is known for its grilled favorites like baby back ribs, rib eye steaks and pork chops. Finish off the meal with a slice of their famous Key Lime pie. Every restaurant in the Keys says they have the best key lime pie, but this one, done traditionally, truly hits the spot. They also offer delivered pizza to the surrounding neighborhoods — such as Venture Out, Lazy Lakes and the KOA — after 4:30 p.m. But, it’s probably better to stop in so as to enjoy the frequent live entertainment by the likes of Emily Springsteen.
