“Back to school, back to school, to prove to dad I’m not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight.” Those famous words of Adam Sandler’s character Billy Madison, were the anthem of a generation now all grown up. Local kids have a lot to look forward to when the new school year starts. Including everyone’s favorite – that’s right, school supply shopping (ok, maybe not everyone’s favorite). To get kids to put on their thinking caps, the Weekly asked locals...

“What’s one thing you would add to your school shopping list?”

Alex Giesler said, “A pillow for nap time.”

Stanley Switlik’s Devan Mercury said, “Recycled books. Kids can always bring in books they no longer want, and we’ll find them a new home.”

Sara Gonzales said, “More summer.” Sara is surely not alone in this sentiment.

week before the start of the school year, Dr. Ramon Dawkins, executive director of Human Resources for Monroe County Schools, reported that there were just three teaching positions left to fill. That is the result of a herculean effort because Monroe County School District officials were tasked with filling more than 100 positions. “We lose about 100 teachers every year, on average,” said Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter. He said with 580 teachers district-wide, that represents a turnover rate of about 17 percent. The caliber of teachers, he said, is outstanding. “This year we recruited a high number of teachers with more than 10 years of experience,” Porter said. “We’re attracting a different level of teacher; they are not all brand new, fresh from college.” Many of them, Dr. Dawkins said, have South Florida roots, something he hopes will make the new teacher’s transition to the Florida Keys a little easier. They are more likely to be aware of the unique environment and challenges such as affordable housing. Porter said the school district is expecting about 8,000 students this

Porter: Teachers ready for start year, similar to previous years. The final number probably will not be established until the beginning of September. “The students don’t always show up in the grade you were projecting, or place. We don’t worry on the first day because we figure that by Labor Day we have everybody that we’re going to see,” he said. The other concern at the start of the school year, is the number of bus drivers. According to Randy Fabal, supervisor of transportation, the district has filled all the positions except for

t Monday’s Hometown PAC meeting, School Board District Three incumbent Ed Davidson and challenger Mindy Conn went head-to-head in a debate regarding Monroe County’s school system. Davidson, a Navy Top Gun Fighter Pilot from Vietnam and local charter boat captain, is known as the taxpayer watchdog on the school board and wants to continue to fight the bubba-system in Key West. He said missing money and political cover-ups should not be tolerated, “The school board is responsible for every nickel of tax payer’s money.” Conn, a College Success Coach for Take Stock In Children and former New York State Assistant Attorney General, says she wants to incorporate her ABC’s into the school board: Accountability, Balance, and Community. Regarding Superintendent Porter, Davidson said he wants him out, “He is no longer the person we need to lead us into the future.” Conn said that he’s done things right but has also made mistakes, “As long as one or two individuals on the school board continue to put him down and are unwilling to work with him, it is very hard for him to do his job.” Davidson said there needs to be help retaining teachers past the first year. According to Davis, out of the fifteen new teachers last year, 14 left because they couldn’t afford it. “We need to pay teachers better and help with affordable workforce housing to keep people

16 schools in Monroe County 8 received an A grade, 5 of those were charter schools. The district has a $206 million budget, 90 percent comes from taxes

here,” he said. Conn agreed that more needs to be done and rebutted that in the past four years nothing has happened. Conn, a mother of two Monroe County students, says having her children in the district is an asset. “It gives me a view of what’s going on inside the school,” she said. Davidson said that the other school board members have or have had children and grandchildren in the schools, or wives and daughters as teachers in the system. “That only represents one-fifth of our taxpayer population,” he said. “I particularity concentrate on the 80 percent of the taxpayer base…who do not have children in the schools and do not benefit directly. They are willing to fund the next generation, but they expect their money to be transparently spent and accounted for.” Davidson closed by saying that this is a big business and full time job, and he will continue to be a watchdog for the community. Conn ended saying that she is representing 100 percent of the people, not just 80 percent.

unset Grille & Raw Bar owner John Kotch was denied his request to change the zoning on the three lots he purchased adjacent to the restaurant. And the vote was a tie on whether or not to accept his conditional use permit about amplified music; meaning no action was taken. But first, one council member recused himself from the vote, and another withstood criticism for refusing to do so. Councilman John Bartus said he would not take part on the vote because he is regularly paid to perform music at the waterfront bar and restaurant. Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron, who lives less than a quarter mile away from the restaurant and has engaged in litigation and testified during Code meeting against Sunset Grille, did not abstain. Her vote followed advice from city attorney David Migut, who cited a precedence that allowed for a councilmember to vote under similar circumstances., but cautioned that only the Florida Commission on Ethics can give a definitive opinion on ethical questions. But Kotch’s attorney Frank Greenman opened his remarks in the same vein. “Councilwoman, I ask that you reconsider your decision to vote on this matter,” Greenman said, citing the lawsuit and the pending appeal for who will pay attorney fees. He also said she has filed numerous complaints against the restaurant and testified against it in a court of law. “You’ve pretty much telegraphed that you are going to vote against this. That’s a bias. The law looks at it like you can’t serve two masters. You either serve the City of Marathon or you serve yourself and your husband.” The zoning changes — from residential high to mixed use — apply to the three lots adjacent to the restaurant, less than an acre. Kotch has said he would use those for parking, but has not filed a conditional use that specifies application. In the Knights Key neighborhood, only the restaurant and the Knights Key RV Park, soon to become a highend resort, are classified as mixed use. The RV park and the restaurant are separated by a canal. The City of Marathon is under no obligation to change the zoning. In fact, staff has recommended

against it. In the Planning Commission denial, staff cites increased traffic, lack of parking, and flooding concerns. Because the zoning changes come without a conditional use application, residents are concerned about the future. If the zoning were to be changed to mixed use, the lots could be home to radio towers, seafood processing plants, vehicle storage, or amusement parks. “The real issue is about protecting the character of our neighborhoods,” said George Garrett, director of planning and deputy city manager. “And so that was our recommendation to the Planning Commission.” Various residents of the 20-something home neighborhood, many of which are vacation rentals, spoke at the meeting. “[Sunset Grill] has become a monster. There is a problem, no question, a problem caused by Mr. Kotch,” said Jenny Lynn Smith, speaking during public comment. “[Kotch] has thumbed his nose at the city, at the law, and the court. He has thumbed his nose at us. He’s taken a small family restaurant and turned it into a tiki bar. The restaurant was a mistake. It has impacted our neighborhood.” Kotch said Sunset Grill is more than a restaurant. “It has become more than a restaurant, it has become a destination for Marathon. Our patrons are finding us even though we’re not on US1. It’s the most photographed spot in town,” Kotch said. “And are one of the largest employers in Marathon.” In other news: • Councilman Dan Zieg asked the city staff for research pertaining to durations for building permits. The goal is to get more finished properties paying into the tax base more quickly. • Eagle Scout Sean Roberts made a presentation about his project labeling the flora at Sombrero Beach. • Councilman Bill Kelly asked for discussion, and staff research, on hosting for-profit events at city facilities. • Council agreed to support a letter from FIRM (Fair Insurance Rates Monroe) opposing an 8.9 percent hike in windstorm insurance.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016

M

arathon High School’s new Dean of Students, Christine Paul, originally moved to Marathon from Long Island at 16. After spending several vacations in the Keys throughout her teenage years, her family finally made the move South. She attended MHS for her junior and senior years, graduating in 1993. Christine has kept her heart in the Florida Keys; and enjoys her free time with husband Derek Paul, of Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and her two boys. “I love it here, I don’t want to live anywhere else,” said Christine. Christine and Derek just celebrated 19 years of marriage. Christine began her higher-level education at Florida Keys Community College before being awarded the Presidential Transfer Scholarship to join Florida International University’s Honors College. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Art Education in 1997 and landed her first teaching job at Plantation Key School. “It was a great place to begin my teaching career,” Paul said. In 2006, she earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from Florida State University. For the past 13 years she has been the library media specialist at Stanley Switlik Elementary. Now at MHS, she is excited to work one-on-one with students to not only encourage good discipline, but to also to build a positive learning environment where kids to want to learn.

During college, what were some other fields that interested you? Computer Science and Humanities. This program uses an interdisciplinary approach to stimulate critical thinking, discussion, and creativity.

What are some resources to improve student’s research and writing? “The public library and Florida Electronic library. Teachers have been working all summer to revise the curriculum and organize resources to improve writing at all levels.”

Where have you atraveled and where to next? Last summer we took a cruise through the western Mediterranean visiting Spain, Italy, and France. I would like to see Eastern Europe my next big trip.

You played cowbell in Marathon High School Band? Does the current band need less or more cowbell? As far as I know, there aren’t too many songs that feature the cowbell so when you get the chance I say “give it all you got!”

Why is it important for kids to be passionate about books? I love that books can answer questions and allow us to learn. I want students to know they can learn about new places even if they can’t get there right now. You are a big supporter of owning a library card. Do you carry yours? I always have my library card. It’s free and one of the best resources you can have!

GABRIEL SANCHEZ gabriel@keysweekly.com

16 Questions with

CHRISTINE PAUL Marathon’s Homegrown Dean

During high school, you starred in “18 Nervous Gumshoes.” Could you ever see yourself as a performer? Yes, if I ever get some free time. I’d have always loved Hello Dolly and could see myself in it. If you could have lunch with any historical figure, who would it be and why? Richard the III, I want to hear his side of the story. What would you like students to be aware of? Attitude is everything. I want my students to be present, be kind, and make the best of every situation so they can live the lives they dream of. What is your pet-peeve? Haters! Which television or movie character is your alter-ego? Wonder Woman, I even have the costume! Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate. Who is your favorite musician? Mozart. Do you prefer New York style pizza or Italian pizza? New York, but I did appreciate the scenery in Italy. What’s your favorite memory of Old 7? I first met my husband on old 7.

What is one thing you want readers to know about families of law enforcement? We are no different and just want the same things. I am proud to know that local law enforcement is doing all they can to make the community a safer place.

Which nuisance would you like to remove from the Florida Keys; mosquitos, iguanas, or jellyfish? All of the above. FINISH THESE SENTENCES: I feel at my best when… I have a good night’s rest.

What was the last book you read? I recently finished “Hacking Education” by Mark Barnes. What’s your favorite genre of book? I really do like historical fiction, I’m also really into the Game of Thrones series. At the moment, I am reading Inferno by Dan Brown.

Marathon’s Kegan Jeffries qualifies for national stage

eygan Jeffries, a senior at Marathon High School, had a taste of national competition over the summer. He competed in the 400-meter and 800-meter track events at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics meet in Sacramento, California, in late July. He faced a field of about 60 top competitors from around the country. He’s eager for a rematch next year, he said. “I was one of the youngest in my age group,” said the just-turned17-year-old. “I’m competing against kids that are sometimes two years older.” He placed in the bottom third in the 400, and about the middle of the pack in the 800. That he fared better in the distance event, came as not surprise to Keygan. There is no track and field team at the high school, and he’s been keeping in shape by training with the cross country team, as well as participating Personal Records in community races like the Keys 100, an 400 meters: 50.89 ultramarathon, and the Seven Mile Bridge 800 meters: 1:57:92 Run.

“But, I thing we might have a track team this year,” Keygan said, adding that he’s recruiting friends who show an interest. “We might be able to figure something out with Coral Shores or Key West teams where we can compete with, or alongside them.” Jeffries, the son of City Manager Chuck Lindsey and Marathon Middle School teacher Leslie Lindsey, started running in the sixth grade. He spent two years in the Keys during middle school, and just returned to Marathon halfway through the school year in 2016. “Keygan is a natural athlete who gives his all during practice and games,” said cross country coach James Murphy. “When I heard he was moving back last January, I was excited because I knew he would add a lot of depth to the cross country and soccer programs.” Now, Keygan is looking forward to what’s next. He only has a couple of core classes to complete — he’s THAT kind of kid — and is already researching walk-on times needed to compete at division 1 colleges. What does he want to study? Taking a big, sucking breath, he said, “biomedical engineering.” It seems Keygan isn’t done challenging himself. But first, the cross country season opener on Saturday, Aug. 20 in South Miami.

Above: Keygan Jeffries was able to participate in the Junior Olympics meet this summer by joining the Northwest Association, his old stomping grounds before moving to the Keys. Left: The Marathon High School senior hopes to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.

Four girls return from national tourney

F

our girls from the Florida Keys recently returned from the USA Elite Select All American Games in Orlando — Isabella Perez, Ariadna Ruiz and Gracie Wood of Key West and Cecily Ozbun of Marathon. It’s a highly competitive tournament featuring players from around the country and all the girls had to tryout in order to be selected. The four girls played on separate teams, with players from a mix of other regions, all coached by college student athletes. “It was a phenomenal experience,” said Tara Wood, Gracie’s mom. “It was a single-elimination, national tournament. They only had one practice together before the game started and the team was coached by a college player. It was an amazing, fantastic experience.” Gracie played in the U-14 bracket and her team won that

championship. Isabella Perez’s U-11 team made it all the way to the finals, only to be beat. “Isabella hit a walk off triple in a semifinal game tied 6 to 6 with her at the plate to win the game 7 to 6,” said proud mom Terese. “She was the starting catcher on her team and her defense was ‘lights out’ the whole tournament.” Ariadna Ruiz played in the U-12 bracket and her team won the first two games, but lost in the semi-finals, placing third. Cecily Ozbun played in the U-13 bracket and, unfortunately, her team was bested early in the tournament. The games were played in the ESPN World Wide Sports Arena in Orlando the first week of August. “On Saturday, when the games were over, we finally went to the parks. It was a big week,” said Angela Ozbun, Cecily’s mom. “It was a really good experience.”

1. Ariadna Ruiz, Gracie Wood and Isabella Perez of Key West were selected to play in a national tournament. 2. Isabella Perez plays catcher on her U11 team that made it to the finals. 3. Cecily Ozbun, of Marathon, played on an elite team with other girls from around the country.

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016

NEW TEACHERS

Marathon High and Middle School welcomes 10 new teachers to the halls in the 2016-17 school year. The group is a mix of veteran and new teachers, tackling everything from alternative education to AP chemistry. — Weekly Staff report DABNEY ABBOTT is the new art teacher at Marathon High School, replacing the retired Lourdes Dick. The art courses range from “Exploring 2D Art” for middle school students to Drawing III for more experienced student artists. Abbott hails from Gulf Breeze, Florida, and received her degree at Florida State University. “I’m a brand new teacher!” Abbott said. “I worked as a studio artist before getting certified to teach. This is my first year.” She likes fishing, hunting, spear fishing, running with her dogs (Boomer and Duke), beach volleyball and swimming. “Hands-on labs are crucial!” says MEAGHAN BRUNK. She’s the new chemistry, chemistry honors and AP chemistry teacher at MHS. Her previous experience includes teaching seventh and eighth grade sciences. Brunk hails from Miami and studied in Gainesville at the University of Florida where she received a Bachelor’s in zoology. Now she lives on Big Pine Key with her boyfriend, a dog and two cats. When she isn’t teaching, Brunk plans to spend her time fishing, hiking, snorkeling, and collecting butterflies.

DEBRA BYRNES is moving back to the Keys after a 12-year absence. Formerly of Islamorada, the South Florida native, had been on the Space Coast teaching at Cocoa High School. “I believe in providing a safe and supportive environment for students to learn with high expectations for their growth and achievement,” she said. Her husband is a fishing guide and her son recently made the decision to join the Marines. Byrnes will be teaching seventh grade math at Marathon Middle School.

This MHS graduate is returning to the halls to teach English as a second language (ESOL). JOEY GONZALEZ received his degree, a bachelors in social sciences, from Florida Gulf Coast University. “I plan to facilitate a relaxed and encouraging learning environment,” Gonzalez said. Gonzalez’s family has a long history in education-related careers. His wife, Stacie Gonzalez, is a fourth grade teacher and his mom, Jackie Gonzalez, is the wizard at the high school’s front desk. When he’s not at school, Marathon will find Gonzalez playing baseball, weight-lifting and running.

ANASTASIA JACK, a new math teacher at Marathon High School, is practically quivering with excitement waiting for the new school year to begin. “I’ve lived in Marathon for two and a half years, but I am from Fort Wayne, Indiana,” she said. The transplant has an eightmonth-old son, Jameson, with boyfriend Michael Mearns. This first-time teacher received her bachelors in mathematics from Purdue University and is currently working on her masters in education. “My hobbies are photography, running, traveling and going to the beach with my baby,” she said.

LESLIE LINDSEY will be teaching critical thinking to middle schoolers at Marathon Middle School. “My goal in teaching is to foster a love for learning, stimulate natural curiosity. I want to inspire students to achieve empowerment.” Lindsey, wife of Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey, has two boys — Keygan, who will be a senior this year, and Bosun, 3. “I was born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska, however as a military spouse I have lived several places of the years including Washington, Texas and Puerto Rico,” she said. Her secret pleasures include lake boating with family and friends, and oneline shopping. “I have a hard time passing up a ‘good deal,’” she said with a smile.

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016 SHANNON MIGUT, new to Marathon but not the Monroe County School District. “This is my 17th year as a classroom teacher, and my second in Monroe County,” she said. She will be teaching language arts and intensive reading for seventh graders. She’s married to City of Marathon’s attorney, David Migut, and they have a nine-year-old daughter. She has a wide variety of hobbies ranging from reading to cooking to arts and crafts and consignment store shopping. “Right now, I’m learning to fish.”

GEORGINA RODRIGUEZ is passionate about math. “In my experience, the three biggest obstacles to learning are a student’s belief that math is boring, impossible or irrelevant,” she said. “Mathematics is often taught as a cold, distant science with an endless list of formulas and seemingly no connection between topics. I bring excitement using energy and examples to teach ideas.” She has a 14-year old daughter and her hobbies are exercising, going to the beach, reading and dancing. She will be teaching algebra 2 and AP Statistics.

My teaching practices empower students to take ownership of their education and help them realize that they are responsible for their learning outcomes,” he said. He is married to Isel Simpson and has three grown children — Genevieve, Zachary and Cecilia. When he’s not teaching, he likes anything sports-related or outdoor-related.

SARA SNOW has arrived at Marathon High School to teach seventh grade life science. She’s been teaching science since 1989. “My classroom is a place where the students’ unique qualities are embraced, encouraged and celebrated. I like to create a stimulating environment that allows my students to explore and grow into lifelong learners.” Snow has two children — daughter Sydney Snow, 17, and son Alex Snow, 19.

ixteen-year-old Rachel Wilcox is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. With poise and a devastating smile, Wilcox will travel to Poland to attend school for an entire year, sans her family — Rob Wilcox and Dr. Sharon Ward and her two brothers. She will live with a host family, a single mother named Elwira, and not return back to Key West until next July. The trip has taken immense preparation. Since last December she has doubled her school work in order to save her place as senior upon returning and added three Polish language lessons a week, a language she never had spoken before this year. But Wilcox’s journey isn’t just about hard work or a sense of adventure, it’s a part of a larger story that someday will be told nationally. It started when Wilcox was looking for a way to challenge herself outside of high school. After a lengthy application process, she was the only student in Monroe County chosen to go to school in Olszten, Poland, as a part of the National Rotary Youth Exchange program and received a generous $1,000 stipend from the Key West Rotary Club to help with expenses. “I am excited about another culture and meeting new people, but dreading the first day of school. I have grown up with the same people my whole life,” Wilcox said with nervous excitement. But she forgot to mention a significant detail: the documentary film crew following her. Let’s add modest to the list of endearing qualities about Wilcox. She will be featured in a documentary based on the best selling novel, “The Smartest Kids

Key West’s Rachel Wilcox, 16, has been practicing her Polish for the past eight months.

“I am excited about another culture and meeting new people, but dreading the first day of school. I have grown up with the same people my whole life,”

in the World: And How They Got That Way” by Amanda Ripley. The original book was a study of American kids in three exemplary school systems: Finland, South Korea and Poland. Wilcox was chosen to be documented as a bright young American entering the Polish school system. Filming has already begun in Key West and Wilcox is a natural, according to her mother, beloved local OB/GYN, Dr. Ward. “I’m not nervous or scared. She’s a great kid and this will change her life forever. I am excited and just a little bit jealous,” said Dr. Ward with pride. Headed out into the unknown, and having it filmed, takes courage and grace, two qualities Wilcox already has and will serve her well on her journey ahead.

MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016

Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly. What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I’m involved in the culinary arts program. I think it’s an amazing career path for any young adult. It opens a lot of doors. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? I would have to strongly say Mrs. Paulson. She has shown me that if I try my hand at anything, I can do it. She’s showed me that anything I work hard at achieving is possible.

To our BUYERS and SELLERS. We hope you enjoy your new homes.

Karen Raspe, P.A. - Represented the Buyers of 250 14th Street, Key Colony Beach

The Hidden Gem located on the Gulf behind BLUEGREEN m.m. 48

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I would have to say Algebra. It shows me how to think critically and the tools needed for adulthood. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? Today’s world is very different. We don’t spend as much faceto-face time with family and friends as we used to do.

YUSHANE HAMILTON

What advice would you give to a freshman entering high school? I would say to always be on time. Try to always be yourself and focus on yourself. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? I would say any Will Smith character. He’s a talented and brave person who speaks up when needed. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I would create more public places where we could all be social and come together as a community. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? Since his term is ending, I’d tell him to have fun and good luck living outside the White House. What are your plans after high school? To find the best college and learn real estate.

Kilts in the Keys Fundraiser begins

planning stages for annual festival

A

ug. 7, Herbie’s Bar and Chowder house hosted the Kilts in the Keys Summer party in support of the upcoming Florida Keys Celtic Festival and Hammock House. The Hammock House is a non-profit after school program and camp, free of charge, for Marathon’s youth. Pickup is located at Stanley Switlik Elementary School. Trained counselors dedicate their days tutoring, going on field trips, having beach days, doing arts and crafts, all while supporting families to maintain safe and stable family and work lives. The camp program is looking to expand another week next year. The fourth annual Celtic Festival is a the result of partnerships throughout Marathon that include Celtic Heritage Productions, the City of Marathon, Marathon Rotary Club, Marathon Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, Episcopalian organizations and clergy members, and dedicated members of the community who volunteer their money, time, and effort. The festival was originally created by St. Columba Episcopal Church. “We’re trying to make it bigger and better every year,” said Loretta Geotis. “We created a new committee that meets monthly, so we work on it an entire year to put together. It’s so well supported by the church and parishioners, Everything we do is for the kids.” Volunteers, sponsors, and vendors are sought to grow the outreach of the local program. The Jan. 7-8 Festival will feature Celtic bands, island games, sheep dog herding, etc. Florida Keys Country club is hosting a hickory stick golf tournament following the weekend’s festivities. Contact Loretta Geotis to volunteer at 305-797-1704 or at loretta@ keysbusinessservies.com. Visit the floridakeyscelticfestival. com and watch the Hammock House video on the homepage for more info.

New board for Foster/ Adoptive Association

F

rom April 2015 to April 2016, approximately 100 Monroe County children were placed in foster care. Children can sometimes be moved in the middle of the night and arrive in a new environment with few belongings. “Many social service agencies are limited to the amount of financial assistance they can give children and their families,” said FKFAPA Chairman Richard Puente. “Our efforts are geared to supplement these needs with both financial and material assistance where and when we can.” With a mission statement of “Every Child Matters,” the Florida Keys Foster/Adoptive Parent Association (FKFAPA) was formed as a non-profit organization in 2003 to network with social service agencies on behalf of foster, adoptive and at-risk children and their caregivers. “I am grateful to the association for looking at what the parents and family members need,” said Wesley House CEO Beth Barrett. “Their officers and members have worked extremely hard to create a viable and thriving support system to families who have opened their homes to foster and adoptive children.“ This past Saturday, the FKFAPA held their annual meeting at the Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House to swear in a new board of directors and outline plans for the new year. Pictured, from left: Lisa DelosSantos (board member), Holly Estes (vice chair) Chairman Richard Puente, Beth Harrington (secretary/treasure) and Wesley House CEO Beth Barrett. T

he concert hopping Holly Smorgala has been shaking up cocktails at Sparky’s Landing in Key Colony Beach for almost nine years – on of her favorites is her coconut margarita. “It’s special because it’s made with 1800 tequila,” she said. “It’s the best.” Being a Keys-girl for the past 20 years, she retreated south from the cold winters in Pennsylvania. “I can’t stand cold weather,” she said. Her favorite part of working at Sparky’s is the well ran restaurant, and of course her office overlooks Key Colony Beach Marina and bay. She said the coconut margarita goes best with the Cajun pasta topped with blackened chicken, shrimp, or fish. “It’s a spicy cream sauce,” she said. “So the drink helps cool it off.” “When I’m not working, I’m going to concerts,’ she said. The last concerts she went to was in the mainland to see Journey, and down to Key West to see the Gin Blossoms.

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016

The Day the Music Died Unintended consequences of government actions

W

hen my fellow Marathon City Council members Michelle Coldiron and Dr. Dan Zieg voted against bringing Sunset JOHN Grille’s development agreement in line BARTUS with the original is a City Council deed restrictions member and a that dated back to former Mayor of 2003, it forced the the City of Maracancellation of all thon. John is also a musician who live music at the performs around Sunset Grille. The town at various original deed reestablishments. striction allowed live music until 9 p.m.; the development agreement mistakenly included a “no amplified music” phrase that effectively preempted the intent of the original deed restriction. The measure to bring into alignment the development agreement and the original deed restriction — recommended by the City’s planning staff and passed by the Planning Commission — failed on a 2-2 tie vote. Seeing as I (used to) play music occasionally at the Sunset Grille, I rightfully abstained from voting on the measure. During the testimony of the quasijudicial hearings on all the Sunset Grille items before the Council this past Tuesday, there were a lot of lies — huge whoppers — told about music at the Sunset Grille – under oath. For the record, all live music stops at 9:00 p.m. Period. And the managers on duty have never hesitated to tell musicians to turn down the volume. So when people got up to testify that the “boom boom boom” music from the Sunset Grille kept them up past 11:00 p.m., they were either sadly mistaken or intentionally misleading. So in their effort to restrict the Grille and protect its neighbors, all amplified live music was deemed illegal resulting in Sunset Grille cancelling all its scheduled performers. If people thought that this would hurt Sunset Grille, they were in error. This may come as a news flash to some, but live music isn’t the biggest draw to the venue. Like they say about real estate, it’s location, location, location. Food and drink on the water at the foot of the Seven Mile Bridges with a gorgeous sunset view will keep customers filling the parking lot. The live music at the Grille enhanced the total experience, but the location will keep the seats and tables full.

So who did this action hurt? Our local working musicians, people who are my friends and peers in our Keys music community. People like Brian Roberts, Tim Dee, Jim Hill, Chris Case, Paul Ferretti, Dennis Hayden, Reggie Paros, Joe Ivey, Marsha Fletcher, Robert Ruscitto, and the Band Reach. My friends Glenn Faast, Steven Miller, Rob Garza, Storm Watch, the Blues Brothers, Wyatt Hurts, Simone and the Super Cats, Monks of Funk, I-land Vibe, not to mention, Sunday Fun Day, Leigha Fox, and US 1 Radio. These are all local musicians who depend upon these gigs for income… and it has now been taken away. Many of these people are full-time professional musicians, and all of them never hesitate to donate their time, equipment, and services for a worthy cause. They have now lost a real percentage of their necessary regular income thanks to the vote of two Marathon Council members. I totally understand why the Knight’s Key neighbors didn’t want to see a zoning change that would have turned the residential lots adjacent to the Sunset Grille into Mixed Use Commercial. That could have opened a Pandora’s Box of uses that would have been allowed as-of-right. But the failure to support the reconciliation of the terms of the development agreement with the original deed restriction reeks of the desire for punitive action against Sunset Grille. Sadly, it’s not the Grille that will be punished. During my original six years on Council, a term that was tossed around frequently was “unintended consequences.” That concept is there to help an elected official consider all the potential ramifications of his or her decision. While (at this time) a zoning change for the residential lots is the only way to allow additional parking, there might have been other consequences to that decision. And there are certainly consequences to the Council’s failure to approve the recommendation of City staff and the Planning Commission… like taking food off of the tables of local working musicians. - John Bartus is a singer/songwriter, City Council Member, and the former Mayor of the City of Marathon. John can be seen performing Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek Bar & Grill, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, this Friday with Storm Watch NOT at the Sunset Grille, Saturday afternoons at the Postcard Inn and Saturday nights at the Key Colony Inn, and Sunday afternoons at the Lorelei. www.johnbartus.com.
