“Back to school, back to school, to prove to dad I’m not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight.” Those famous words of Adam Sandler’s character Billy Madison, were the anthem of a generation now all grown up. Local kids have a lot to look forward to when the new school year starts. That includes everyone’s favorite – that’s right, school supply shopping (ok, maybe not everyone’s favorite). To get kids to put on their thinking caps, the Weekly asked locals...
“What’s one thing you would add to your school shopping list?”
“An iPhone 7, so we can be able to use them in class,” said Christopher Rodriguez.

Dominic Gonzalez said, “Sunglasses, so when you fall asleep in class, the teacher won’t notice.”
“A laptop, like the MacBook Pro,” said Jena Jones.

ampaign announcements for the Nov. 8 elections of the Village of Islamorada council seats continue. Journalist, author, and teacher at the Academy at Ocean Reef, Jill Zima Borski, has announced her candidacy for Seat 5 of the Islamorada Village Council. Borski previously served on the Council from 2008 to 2010. She will face off against current Councilman, and former mayor, Mike Forster. Forster has served the village from 2003-2006, 20122014, and 2014-2016. He was elected without opposition in his last two terms. Borski, a graduate of Duke and the University of Indiana, says the biggest issue facing the village is “economic efficiency.” “The council just set a millage/tax rate at 22 percent above last year’s rate. Why? What additional benefits can we expect? Nobody on council is a fiscal watchdog. Nobody demands that certain departments (building and zoning; planning) are self-supporting, and that our village enterprise funds, like the marina, is operated with funds garnered solely from the residents who live there,” said Borski. “Having served on council in 2008-2010, I have the experience, integrity and problem-solving skills to get things done. I was known for my consistent support of a central wastewater system to improve our water quality (it was state-mandated!), as well as for my environmental support (e.g. for endangered species like the key tree cactus). I helped bring money home from Tallahassee for land acquisition and the wastewater system.” Forster, a restaurateur, currently serves as Board President of Florida Bay Forever, and sits on the Monroe County Canal Restoration Committee, and the Monroe County BP Horizon Assessment Committee to Rank allocating funds. He says the biggest issue facing the Village is sustainability. “We need to whatever we can to restore the Everglades and Florida Bay to normal, and that starts with us as a community, and State, solving the issues with the fresh water springs up North. We need to do whatever we can to keep it as pristine as possible,” said Forster, who added he wants to continue to educate the community about the issues facing inshore water quality. “In the past 8-9 months, looked at what has happened at the level of involvement of council members in water quality,” he said. “I have many in roads to continue the fight for what I feel is important for us here in Monroe County.” The Nov. 8 election will decide which councilmembers will serve on the five-seat council. All five councilpersons’ terms are up, but only two seats have drawn challengers. As of presstime, Mayor Deb Gillis (Seat 1), Jim Mooney (Seat 3), and Chris Sante (Seat 4) are unopposed, however, candidates have until August 23 at noon to qualify.

t Monday’s Hometown PAC meeting, School Board District Three incumbent Ed Davidson and challenger Mindy Conn went head-to-head in a debate regarding Monroe County’s school system. Davidson, a Navy Top Gun Fighter Pilot from Vietnam and local charter boat captain, is known as the taxpayer watchdog on the school board and wants to continue to fight the bubba-system in Key West. He said missing money and political cover-ups should not be tolerated, “The school board is responsible for every nickel of tax payer’s money.” Conn, a College Success Coach for Take Stock In Children and former New York State Assistant Attorney General, says she wants to incorporate her ABC’s into the school board: Accountability, Balance, and Community. Regarding Superintendent Porter, Davidson said he wants him out, “He is no longer the person we need to lead us into the future.” Conn said that he’s done things right but has also made mistakes, “As long as one or two individuals on the school board continue to put him down and are unwilling to work with him, it is very hard for him to do his job.” Davidson said there needs to be help retaining teachers past the first year. According to Davis, out of the fifteen new teachers last year, 14 left because they couldn’t afford it. “We need to pay teachers better and help with affordable workforce housing to keep people
16 schools in Monroe County 8 received an A grade, 5 of those were charter schools. The district has a $206 million budget, 90 percent comes from taxes
here,” he said. Conn agreed that more needs to be done and rebutted that in the past four years nothing has happened. Conn, a mother of two Monroe County students, says having her children in the district is an asset. “It gives me a view of what’s going on inside the school,” she said. Davidson said that the other school board members have or have had children and grandchildren in the schools, or wives and daughters as teachers in the system. “That only represents one-fifth of our taxpayer population,” he said. “I particularity concentrate on the 80 percent of the taxpayer base…who do not have children in the schools and do not benefit directly. They are willing to fund the next generation, but they expect their money to be transparently spent and accounted for.” Davidson closed by saying that this is a big business and full time job, and he will continue to be a watchdog for the community. Conn ended saying that she is representing 100 percent of the people, not just 80 percent.

(Editor’s note: The Weekly Newspapers turned the tables on school administrators and teacher this year. Instead of assigning students the inevitable “What I Did On My Summer Vacation” essay, the paper asked the grownups to write their own stories. We give them all extra points for good spelling, grammar, originality and timeliness — A+!)

“M
an, it sure must be nice to have summers off,” said every non-teacher on the planet. My response is always, “It really would be great! ... ... …Wait, are you talking about me?” To be honest, a teacher’s job is never complete and we need the breaks we get in order to do the job done ten months of out of the year. The rest of the time, our so-called “summer break,” is spent doing other equally important aspects of the job such as professional development, planning, and regaining our sanity. Many people don’t realize how much of a toll that teaching takes on someone, but kudos to those of you who do. With that being said, amongst the online classes, lesson planning, research, school shopping and revising goals, we do make time for a bit of fun. This summer, I had several adventures to help me regain my momentum for the next school year. They included snorkeling and swimming with what seemed like a million sting-rays and turtles in Grand Cayman, listening to live Jazz music in New Orleans, hiking in the mountains of Arkansas, traveling to Miami to several “old-school” concerts, and enjoying the simple paradise we call home, the Keys, by going to the sandbar with friends and family. I enjoyed geo-caching the stretch of islands, sleeping in a hammock oceanside, fishing the deep blue sea, barbecuing anything we catch, and enjoying the amenities around us. However, now it is time to get back to the grind of teaching, which honestly to me, is just as exciting and fun as any other adventure.
Alena McNew spent plenty of time enjoying her own backyard.

Porter: Teachers ready for start SARA MATTHIS
sara@keysweekly.com
A
week before the start of the school year, Dr. Ramon Dawkins, executive director of Human Resources for Monroe County Schools, reported that there were just three teaching positions left to fill. That is the result of a herculean effort because Monroe County School District officials were tasked with filling more than 100 positions. “We lose about 100 teachers every year, on average,” said Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter. He said with 580 teachers districtwide, that represents a turnover rate of about 17 percent. The caliber of teachers, he said, is outstanding. “This year we recruited a high number of teachers with more than 10 years of experience,” Porter said. “We’re attracting a different level of teacher; they are not all brand new, fresh from college.” Many of them, Dr. Dawkins said, have South Florida roots, something he hopes will make the new teacher’s transition to the Florida Keys a little easier. They are more likely to be aware of the unique environment and challenges such as affordable housing. Porter said the school district is expecting about 8,000 students this year, similar to previous years. The final number probably will not be established until the beginning of September. “The students don’t always show up in the grade you were projecting, or place. We don’t worry on the first day because we figure that by Labor Day we have everybody that we’re going to see,” he said. The other concern at the start of the school year, is the number of bus drivers. According to Randy Fabal, supervisor of transportation, the district has filled all the positions except for one in Marathon and one on Sugarloaf. Each driving position is backed up by a substitute driver.“But we have people who are in the process of training,” Fabel said. “It’s a minimum 40 hours of training to become a driver.” There will be four new buses on the road this year, in addition, three more are on order for the next school year. Of the buses added to the fleet this year, three can accommodate students with disabilities (wheelchair).
CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016
SAMANTHA GUTIERREZ SENIOR Faculty and students at Coral Shores High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I am involved with National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, and Environmental Club. These clubs are important to me because they allow me to be of service to my community and present me with many opportunities. Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? My biggest inspirations is Mrs. Rehmann. She always sets a positive attitude and pushes me to excel in my studies. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I don’t have one class in particular, but all my science classes have better prepared me for my future career. Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter? No I don’t. I use Instagram more. I actually follow a lot of forensic pages, some are from the United Kingdom.
What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenges facing the Keys, I believe, are pollution and overfishing. I always try to attend beach cleanups as much as possible. What are your plans after high school? My plans are to go to college with a double major in biology and anthropology with a minor in forensics. I’m partial to North Carolina State University and University of Tennessee because of their renowned forensic anthropology programs. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I think my career will require me to move around a lot. With that said, it probably will not be a permanent home. Although, I would love to keep a second home down here. Otherwise, North Carolina seems like a place I would want to go, though I’ve never permanently lived there, it feels like a second home. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … the importance of helping as much as you possibly can. Since it is a tight-knit community, I always feel the need to lend a hand.

ROCK STEADY
Bazin, a teacher and musician, has been orchestrating positivity
LIBATION
S
he admits she was unsure of the job at the outset, yet Susan Bazin has been the band director at Key Largo School for 18 years now. Although she’s similar in stature to that of her students, she’s the ring-leader. Her motto is, “If any student has any kind of problem, I’m here to help, and if I can’t help, I’ll find someone who can.” Raised by a single mom in Tampa, Bazin was singled out by the band director in the fifth grade … after she was caught throwing an eraser at the board. He took her under his wing and first tried her hand at the clarinet. No go. Then she tried the tenor saxophone, but that proved difficult to transport on a bicycle. Finally, the flute. Bazin says she can play just about every instrument, although not all “very well,” but she does play the flute “proficiently.” We suspect she’s being modest, as she went to Florida State University on a scholarship. Prior to becoming KLS band-leader, she worked at Disney World playing in the Liberty Day parade. She also joined a clown troop, playing the trombone and piccolo and became the beloved “Piklz,”, a name that is still emblazoned on her vanity plates. Mornings start early for Bazin, she’s usually at the school by 7 a.m. to give lessons before school starts. This year, she’s teaching fourth through eighth grade, beginning and advanced band. She reserves rock ‘n’ roll for the lunch hour or after school. (playing or teaching?) “I consider my classroom as a sanctuary, where anyone can come talk to me about anything. I’m very honest with my kids. If a student is struggling in another class, I tutor on Wednesdays. I hope to influence their lives in a positive way,” she said. “My greatest achievement is when a student plays an instrument better than me. Eventually it does happen. In high school, students tend to take music a little more seriously. While they’re here, I just try to make it fun. If it’s not fun, than an 11-year-old would never do it,” Bazin said. “It’s evident that she really cares about her students, said Bridget Crossen, whose son plays contrabass saxophone in the school band. “Clearly she puts her heart in it. The band truly does transition from the beginning of the year to the end. It becomes actual music.” Rested from her trip to Scotland where Bazin played the flute at small non-paying venues, she says she’s excited for the new school year. She toured Iceland last summer and is eager to visit Greece next. She described her tours as “musical exchange programs.” Bazin, is also a member of Keys Community Concert Band and performs at Pops in the Park concerts, usually the last Saturday of the month at Founders Park. It’s a series of free music concerts, each geared toward a particular theme. Sign-up for the Community Concert Band is in November and practice is only once a week on Monday evenings. The group is open to all skill levels and collects a little money along the way to award to a high school senior pursuing music. “It’s just a little to give them a leg up.”
AT SCHOOL Bazin has planned out a class trip manifesto for the school year, including a trip to Kennedy Space Center at the end of March. Every trip includes at least one live performance and the trips are paid for by students’ local fundraising efforts. For more information about the Key Largo School Band, and if interested in the school band performing free throughout the school year, please contact Susan Bazin at 305-453-1255, Ext. 57380.

ISLAMORADA BEER COMPANY
H
ot August days call for a libation that is equal parts delicious and refreshing. Islamorada Beer Company’s Crystal Jones recommends a No Wake Zone Coconut Key Lime Blonde Ale to cool off. This custom brew is slow roasted, and has the right amount of coconut taste mixed with the zest of Key limes. “It’s made with the most love and that’s why I like it,” said Jones. The brew is one of 10 the local brewery has on tap, with a mango blonde and bourbon brown ale still one way. “At the end of the day we just want our beer to match our lifestyle,” said jones. Crystal, a North Carolina native, relocated to the Keys with her husband Zach after vacationing. She’s worked eight years in the beer industry, doing everything from distribution to now learning under Islamorada Beer Company’s brewer Stephanie Harper. Islamorada Beer Company is also preparing for the Grand Opening of their Brewery and tasting room at their Fort Pierce location.

BOUND FOR POLAND
Youth exchange student to also be filmed for documentary HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
S
ixteen-year-old Rachel Wilcox is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. With poise and a devastating smile, Wilcox will travel to Poland to attend school for an entire year, sans her family — Rob Wilcox and Dr. Sharon Ward and her two brothers. She will live with a host family, a single mother named Elwira, and not return back to Key West until next July. The trip has taken immense preparation. Since last December she has doubled her school work in order to save her place as senior upon returning and added three Polish language lessons a week, a language she never had spoken before this year. But Wilcox’s journey isn’t just about hard work or a sense of adventure, it’s a part of a larger story that someday will be told nationally. It started when Wilcox was looking for a way to challenge herself outside of high school. After a lengthy application process,
she was the only student in Monroe County chosen to go to school in Olszten, Poland, as a part of the National Rotary Youth Exchange program and received a generous $1,000 stipend from the Key West Rotary Club to help with expenses. “I am excited about another culture and meeting new people, but dreading the first day of school. I have grown up with the same people my whole life,” Wilcox said with nervous excitement. But she forgot to mention a significant detail: the documentary film crew following her. Let’s add modest to the list of endearing qualities about Wilcox. She will be featured in a documentary based on the best selling novel, “The Smartest Kids in the World: And How They Got That Way” by Amanda Ripley. The original book was a study of American kids in three exemplary school sys-

Filming has already begun in Key West and Wilcox is a natural, according to her mother, beloved local OB/GYN, Dr. Ward. “I’m not nervous or scared. She’s a great kid and this will change her life forever. I am excited and just a little bit jealous,” said Dr. Ward with pride. Headed out into the unknown, and having it filmed, takes courage and grace, two qualities Wilcox already has and will serve her well on her journey ahead.

Health and Faith subsidized
P
am Feeser, doesn’t work with dolphins, the boisterous marine mammal, but she adheres to her mission statement, DOLPHINS to help people. The name is an acronym, for Different Options for Living Playing and Hoping In Nonviolence and Safety. If that’s too much of a mouthful, just know that Pam is here to help. In 2002, Feeser was in an accident, when an Amtrak car train derailed just outside of Daytona Beach. She briefly died during that wreck but she survived. Her recovery took years, 23 doctors, and more than $100,000 towards her medical care. She says her faith is what got her through. She’s originally from Hanover, Pennsylvania and has been in the Upper Keys since 1999. She has been an ordained pastor in the United Methodist Church since 2002, and is certified in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. What this means is that she’s a social worker or counselor and she specializes in faith-based counseling. Feeser works non-stop. She’s operating Living Springs Counseling and Living Waters Rx Project, both DBA’s of DOLPHINS. Nestled in the corner of the Coral Isles Church’s annex in Tavernier, Feeser provides counseling on marriage, grief, and to current or past domestic violence victims. She provides parenting education. In fact, she’s the only in-person family parenting class approved by Monroe County Family Court. Her counseling services are free to anyone making less than $20,000 a year, or are based on a sliding scale. This allows clients to pay what they can afford. The cost for non court-appointed families is $50 for the 8-week parenting class. The next class will be in September and it’s limited to ten people. Classes are held from 6 – 8 p.m. “I just facilitate the class really, we are all the teachers This system gives courtordered parents the tools necessary to achieve success,” Feeser said. “My whole thing is it needs to be affordable for everyone. I’m generous about letting people come to class.” Feeser also served 15 years as Ministries Manager at Mariners Hospital up until last year. The hospital would often reach out to her to find funds for patient’s prescription costs. She met with Mariners’ social services department and brainstormed how patients could receive their needed medication without Baptist employees having to go from church to church or to local pharmacies. She lined up a somewhat automated program for the hospital and local pharmacies. Usually within two months of patients receiv-
ing their money-aided medications, she reaches out to them. She tries to wean them off her program and enable them to get back on their feet to lead a healthy and productive life. Feeser holds an annual fundraiser, to help fund this program. Her organization believes that everybody should be able to tend to his or her mental and faith health regardless of insurance. She’s received two grants so far and has recently hired a grant writer with a 65% success rate. Every penny goes to assist Upper Keys residents who are not able to afford their medications. According to Feeser, her organizations have spent $3300 to aid clients and DOLPHINS has helped 48 clients. If you need help with medications, tell social services to contact Pam’s organization and they will help. Her current office space is on loan to Feeser. It’s temporary. She needs to find affordable office space to continue her work. Monetary or in-kind donations are greatly appreciated. Contact her at.

MONROE COUNTY
UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / AUGUST 12, 2016
New board for Foster/ Adoptive Association
F
rom April 2015 to April 2016, approximately 100 Monroe County children were placed in foster care. Children can sometimes be moved in the middle of the night and arrive in a new environment with few belongings. “Many social service agencies are limited to the amount of financial assistance they can give children and their families,” said FKFAPA Chairman Richard Puente. “Our efforts are geared to supplement these needs with both financial and material assistance where and when we can.” With a mission statement of “Every Child Matters,” the Florida Keys Foster/Adoptive Parent Association (FKFAPA) was formed as a non-profit organization in 2003 to network with social service agencies on behalf of foster, adoptive and at-risk children and their caregivers. “I am grateful to the association for looking at what the parents and family members need,” said Wesley House CEO Beth Barrett. “Their officers and members have worked extremely hard to create a viable and thriving support system to families who have opened their homes to foster and adoptive children.“ This past Saturday, the FKFAPA held their annual meeting at the Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House to swear in a new board of directors and outline plans for the new year. Pictured, from left: Lisa DelosSantos (board member), Holly Estes (vice chair) Chairman Richard Puente, Beth Harrington (secretary/treasure) and Wesley House CEO Beth Barrett. Tax deductible donations can be sent to FKAFPA, PO Box 371861, Key Largo, FL 33037.
TDC FUNDS CORAL RESTORATION FOUNDATION The Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC) is funding the Coral Restoration Foundation through its 2017 project requests. The TDC’s support of Coral Restoration Foundation now extends to all five districts: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, the Lower Keys, and Key West. With the TDC funding, Coral Restoration Foundation will outplant 7,400 staghorn and 1,360 elkhorn corals in 2017 with the help of volunteers. This restoration project is a subset of the overall efforts being lead by the nonprofit ocean conservation organization. By contributing to the Coral Restoration Foundation, Monroe County is helping to restore our reefs. The Florida Reef Tract is the third largest barrier reef in the world and directly impacts the tourism and diving industries in the Keys. —Contributed
