RV resort, affordable housing for mid-town Developer submits plan to the city
T
he Housing Trust Group has proposed a plan for the long-shuttered Crystal Cove Resort in Marathon. Located between 47th and 50th Streets on the Gulfside, the plan is to develop 26 RV parking spaces on the water complete with a pool and clubhouse, 48 affordable housing units, and 7,700 square feet of commercial space. The RV resort will be separated from the affordable housing by a gate, and the pool and clubhouse will only be for those guests. HTG has owned the property since 2006 and has developed numerous projects in Florida from Tampa to Daytona to Homestead. This would be the first Keys project. The projects range from affordable housing to senior living to student quarters. What’s not known, is what type of affordable housing it would be. The developer’s agreement and conditional use list all five categories — very low, low, median, moderate or middle. “We don’t know what income we will be targeting until we secure financing, but it will be between 60 percent to 140 percent of the median income,” said Jose Romero, vice president of development for the Coconut Grove-based business. A family making 60 percent of the median income typically earns $30,000 a year and a family making 140 percent of the median income typically earns about $80,000 a year. Romero said he would apply to Florida Housing Finance, which typically finances affordable housing with rents at 120 percent of the median income. The renderings of the apartments show one long building with parking on the ground level and two levels of living space above that.
Right now, the property has about two dozen building rights associated with it and those will be used to develop the RV lots, and Romero said the group would apply for more affordable building rights from Monroe Country. He said, if built, the units would be permanently deed restricted as affordable. He also said the project would be developed in phases. Phase one will be the RV lots. Part of the Planning Commission’s work was to re-certify the zoning change to mixed use. A previous planning commission had already approved the measure, but it did not receive two hearings at the council level. “I think this is the fourth time I’ve been before the Planning Commission or the Marathon City Council regarding development of this property since 2004,” said Skip Shipman, a neighbor. “We support reasonable commercial development in accordance with city zoning and planning regulations. The only thing we would ask is that the vegetation be high enough to screen our bedroom windows from RV headlights.”

ELECTION SEASON
MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 19, 2016
Republican candidates for Mosquito Control Districts 3 and 4 have been hard at work in recent weeks leading up to the Aug. 30 primary elections. With cases of travel related Zika dominating local and national news, the spotlight on Florida Keys Mosquito Control measures and strategy has never been brighter. The winners of each race will face the Democrat candidates in the Nov. 8 election. HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
GABRIEL SANCHEZ
gabriel@keysweekly.com
Mosquito Control District 3 Race HAMMOND VS. PINDER
Mosquito Control District 4 Race ZETTWOCH VS. WOOD
Mosquito Control Board District 3 represents old town Key West, an important district when battling urban living and infectious mosquitoes. Candidate Brandon Pinder is a seventhgeneration Conch and has worked as the IT director for Singh Resorts for seven years. He is currently the technology project manager for the construction of a 175-room resort at Oceanside Marina on Stock Island. He owns Brandon Pinder and runs an IT consulting business, Conch Computing Solutions. “My grandfather, Joe Pinder, served on the board for 17 years, so I was able to learn about Mosquito Control at a young age,” Pinder said. “I am also very concerned with the health and safety of our community, fiscal responsibility and accurately representing the voice of fellow residents.” Candidate Stephen Hammond was an executive with Bellsouth, AT&T, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Hammond Investments, LLC Stephen Hammond for the past 12 years. Presently, he is a Realtor in Key West at Island Resort Realty. “I am not a politician. I simply wanted to stop foolish spending and cease arrogant ways,” Hammond said. “This is the second time I have campaigned for this position when I garnered 49 percent of the vote.” Pinder said his most pressing concern is the proposed cost of the Lower Keys facility. “The initial budget was approximately $2.5 million, and now we are looking at close to $6 million,” he said. “I believe that we can get closer to the original budget by eliminating some unnecessary design elements. This should lower the proposed tax increase to a more reasonable number.” Hammond advocates for Mosquito Board term limits. “I would propose limits of 8 to 12 years, this is not a lifetime appointment,” Hammond said. “These people get complacent after 20 years, they bring no new ideas. I will hit the ground running and we will start to see improvement immediately.” The winner of this contest — Hammond or Pinder — will face Steve Smith, the incumbent, on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Candidates Larry Zettwoch and Janet Wood both have extensive records of public service and collectively bring decades of experience to Mosquito Control District 4. Wood served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for 15 years, is chair of the Achievable Housing Citizens Advisory Committee, and serves as a Guardian Ad Litem representing abused and neglected children in the Keys. “My experiences in public service have prepared me for this position, I am ready to continue serving the people. I am the candidate with decades Janet Wood of countywide service in health, safety and welfare issues,” she said. “I know how much work and time goes into holding these positions.” Zettwoch served in the Kentucky Air National Guard and honorably retired from the United States Air Force Reserve, after 32 years, as a colonel. Zettwoch also volunteers as a fireman/paramedic on the Islamorada Fire Rescue, teaches CPR and first aid at the fire station, and is a member of the Port Antigua Property Owners Association. “I want to serve the county in a position where Larry Zettwoch we continue to be the best in the world, but be fiscally conservative. My job is to kill mosquitos, which is our number one priority along with protecting the health of the community,” said Zettwoch. Both Zettwoch and Wood are cautious on the subject of releasing genetically modified mosquitoes. Wood wants the data on the Nov. 8 referendum question before taking an official stance and said she does not support testing without public consent. Zettwoch said he believes it’s safe, but wants scientifically sound data on its efficacy, plus careful tracking. Wood said she supports spending on “delivery systems whether it be trucks, sprayers, helicopters, or any new ways to deliver mosquito killing technologies and chemicals.” Zettwock cites tax increases and said he would support spending on “things that kill mosquitoes. I will spend taxpayer dollars like my own.” The candidate who wins the Republican nomination will face off against Dr. Stanley Zuba in the Nov. 8 general election.

OBITUARY
MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 19, 2016
Deirdre O. Newton, 80,
passed away peacefully on Aug. 12 at home in Vero Beach, Florida, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Nov. 11, 1935 in Pasadena, California to parents Jeremiah and Jean O’Connor. Deirdre worked and lived all over the world — California, Guam, Hong Kong, Honduras and Florida. She is remembered for her celebrated taste and elegance, as well as her achievements and penchant for adventure. Deirdre was an accomplished navigator and was known for her victory in the Miami to Key West sailing race as well as sailing through hurricanes and typhoons. She always had central roles in the many family businesses from directing marketing and advertising at American Marine (Grand Banks Yachts) to managing international agricultural sales at Gate CFV Solutions, Inc. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, colleagues and customers alike. She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John Robert Newton Jr., and her six children: Deborah (and Peter) Brooke of Micco, Florida; John Robert (and Barbara) Newton of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Michael (and Kathleen) Newton of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Cheryl (and Scott) Laidlaw of Newport Beach, California; Gillian (and Francis) Callaghan of Vero Beach, Florida; and Sara (and Mark) Matthis of Marathon, Florida. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren: Patrick, Michael, John Morgan, Allen, Nicole, Brianne, Lucas, Colin, Morgan, Laurel, William, Andrew, Rory, Evan, Jane, Audrey and Rachel. She has three great-grandchildren: Scott, Lucy and Jeremiah. Her ashes will be scattered at sea during a private family service in the near future. “… she [was] the world and the heavens boiled down to a drop.” — Zora Neale Hurston
Keith Fredrick
“Chicken” Wing passed away on Aug. 2, 2016. Born on Aug. 22, 1957, he was not a native to the Florida Keys but he made it his home for the last of his years. He is survived by his loving wife Teresa Wing, his four sisters, one brother and many great nieces and nephews. He was dedicated to his fire alarm technician career at Barnes Alarm and, most importantly, to his family, friends, and loved ones. His smile and practical jokes would light up your day on any day. He will be missed forever and never forgotten. Friends and family will celebrate his life on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to sunset at Sombrero Beach with his favorite foods, music, great memories and a walk on the beach.
Ashes scattered
About 100 friends and family turned out to wish a fond farewell to local charter fisherman Capt. Billy Whitney of the Soc-it-to-em, as his ashes were scattered at one of his favorite spots. A collection of “Old School” and “Way Cool” charter boats joined in the flotilla. Capt. Chris Walter read his eulogy over the VHF radio and a small replica of Whitney’s boat was launched amid flowers tossed from the vessels. A reception followed at Hawks Cay Resort, home base for Whitney for the past 35 years.
But we can’t afford a pool! Really? Did you know that it’s possible to set up a pool where visitors and residents pay to use the facility? The pool can also be rented out for visiting swim teams or novice scuba divers. In other words, a public pool can generate revenue that goes a long way towards paying for itself. Right now, Marathon swimmers and families are taking their dollars to Key West and Islamorada to use those facilities – lane practice and swimming lessons.
By voting yes on the Marathon Pool referendum, voters are signaling the Marathon City Council that they want a public pool. Then, and only then, can the discussions begin about where it should go, how big it would be, how much it would cost to operate.
Vote yes on August 30. Political Advertisement Paid for and Approved by Friends of the Marathon Community Pool, 2000 Coco Plum Dr. Marathon FL 33050. Independent of any candidate, not approved by any candidate.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 19, 2016
Support Rachein on affordable housing solutions Monroe County Residents, Over the past few years our company, SALT, has invested heavily in advertising for and interviewing prospective technicians and administrative personnel both locally and nationwide to facilitate needed staffing. It has become increasingly difficult, to near impossible, to find long-term rental housing in our community for prospective employees, especially for those with family. Someone with an engineering or administrative background would expect to be able to rent a small, single family home — but even affordable housing units are in short supply. Throughout my 27 years of living and raising a family in Marathon we had quality neighborhoods, with good neighbors, because we were not zoned for short-term rentals. Now these neighborhoods, once desirable for raising families, community camaraderie and showing pride of property ownership are gone. The politicized transition towards short-term rental zoning is quickly changing the character of our community. This trend is fueled by forecasting the value of a former single-family home’s earning capacity as a short-term rental investment. Further aggravating this situation is the permitting of large resort hotels to be built, with more to come, requiring a large staff, without obligation to build complete staff housing. This trend is moving us quickly towards a higher percentage of seasonal/short term residents, as compared to full time residents, that traditionally have a focused interest in the integrity of our community. This continued loss of year-round residents further dilutes our communities’ political influence on local government and environmental policies while allowing the interests of property managers and hotel owners, driven to optimize earnings, to rule the day. Many Marathon residents are going to be surprised when suddenly we find ourselves living in a resort style community. This puts in jeopardy the viability of any locally owned service business having a skilled, English capable, staff that is invested in our collective community. This vacuum will be replaced by an increasing number of buses and service vehicles relaying services from Dade County and transient service people that do not pay taxes or insurance. We might still have a voice to stop this transition, but not for long. Please contact OUR Representative Holly Raschein (hollyraschein. com) to show support in repealing existing SB 356 and restoring Home Rule in our community while we still have one.

arly last week, in the wee hours of the morning, Pam Shaw of Big Pine Key decided to take a leisurely bike ride to No Name Key, while her husband headed into work in Key Colony Beach, about 30 minutes away. Her keyring, sprouting at least a dozen keys was too bulky for the trip, so she hid them in the garden behind a bromeliad, in the same spot she always does. An hour later, she returned. She climbed off her bike and went to grab her keys, but they were nowhere to be found. “My keys were missing,” she said. “I yelled across the street to my neighbor to ask her if someone had come into our yard while I was gone, but she said no.” She got down on her hands and knees, sweaty from spinning her tires for the past hour, and started poking around all of her plants to see if she may had mistakenly put the keys behind another plant. “I noticed a large hole from a land crab in the garden and peered inside, but couldn’t see all the way to the end of the hole,” she said. Frustrated, she finally called her husband. “He was not happy, to say the least,” she said. “This problem cost him two hours out of his work day. But, being the good guy that he is, he drove home so that I could get into the house.” Once in the house, Shaw’s mind kept returning to the case of the missing keys. “I was positive I put them behind the bromeliad,” she said. “I took a high-powered flashlight and went back out to the garden and got on my hands and knees to shine the light into the crab hole.” The crab, with its beady little eyes staring right back at her, was standing on top of her keys like it was guarding treasure. “I found a long rod with a hook on the end of it and inserted it into the hole to retrieve my keys,” she said. “The crab did not want to relinquish his prize and looked like he was trying to attack the rod.” After about six attempts, Shaw was finally successful. And the case of the land crab and the missing keys was solved.

n summer break, the alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m., and two Key West High School soon-to-be sophomores open their eyes. Cousins Demi Stiglitz and Peder Bidonne, both 15, brush their teeth, put on a little deodorant and climb into dad Richie Stiglitz’s truck. From there, they sleep for the 30-minute ride to Marathon from their Sugarloaf house, hope dad stops for quick breakfast from The Stuffed Pig, and by 5:30 a.m. they are fishing. “We’ve been on-and-popping since we were 12 years old,” said Demi, while sitting at the dinner table covered in fresh fried grouper after a long day on the boat. “Straight saving money.” The two are saving their money from their 500 lobster traps and 800 crab traps to buy their own boat. They’ve been borrowing the “Catch-NLike Crazy” for the past three years and made $70,000 last year manning the 24-foot boat solo. What they’ll name their new boat, they don’t know yet. They have no interest in video games, only fishing, and sometimes Miami Heat basketball. “They didn’t go to preschool,” said commercial fisherman Richie Stiglitz, “they were out on the boat fishing with me. They learned a lot traveling with me from Naples, to Key West, to the Tortugas and back.” Demi used to play football, but said all he ever thought about was fishing. He hopes to go to college for marine mechanics after graduation so he can fix his own boat when issues arise. Peder just wants to fish. When school starts, they will work the traps only on the weekends, but during the summer they are out every day. “We have to have A’s, B’s, and C’s,” said Demi. “If not, dad won’t let us go.” Both keep their grades high so they won’t be docked for a semester. The two trade off pulling traps and captaining the boat. And, when they aren’t trapping, they love spearfishing and going to the sandbar. Both have their learner’s permits for driving on the road, but have had their boater’s license since they were 10. Fishing out of Keys Fisheries in Marathon, Richie says he sits on the dock in the evenings waiting for the kid’s boat lights to appear over the horizon. They said their only close calls have been lightning strikes, and waterspouts. But dad says he never worries about them. “All the fishermen watch out for them,” he said. “These two boys right here are true watermen.”

“I
t’s like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Beth Ranson, public education and information officer for Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. Ranson was referring to the daunting task of finding an actual mosquito with the Zika or Dengue virus. While one mosquito can do immeasurable damage to a human, it is nearly impossible to locate one carrying a virus. Instead the FKMCD is fighting the potential threat with an army of 35 inspectors, volunteers and proven science to effectively combat any potential breeding of mosquitos both harmful and innocuous. And they are leading the nation in preparedness. Dr. Larry Hribar is at the forefront of the Zika threat. “We are as prepared as anyone could be,” he said. “What FKMCD does here as our ‘business as usual’ is what other programs do in emergency situations. But we do need the public’s help in emptying containers that hold water. Bird baths, plant trivets, buckets, garbage cans, you name it – if it holds water, dump it.” There are 46 different species of mosquitos in the Florida Keys ranging from the nuisance Salt Marsh Mosquito to the viruscarrying Aedes Aegypti. Disease carrying mosquitos make up 1 percent of the population throughout the Keys, but are 20 to 25 percent of the population in Key West. These types of mosquitos tend to thrive in urban areas as they only travel 150 yards from their breeding ground and can easily find food sources. In order to stop any mosquito from breeding, FKMCD has a two-pronged approach. First, inspectors and volunteers are on the ground going house to house with information on how to keep a clean yard. Eliminating any pooling water or potential breeding ground is what every Keys resident needs to be aware of in their home or neighborhood. It is by far the simplest and most effective way to stop the mosquitos. Second, FKMCD uses tactical aerial spraying including two types of spray larvicide and adulticide. While waking up to helicopters directly overhead ia a pain, it is essential. The larvicide is a biological control agent, a powdered form of BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis serotype israelensis, a bacteria), which is non-threatening to humans. It is mixed with water and sprayed over urban areas and salt marshes to counteract breeding. With a six to seven-day gestation period, it is critical that the larvae ingest the agent during that time. The BTI will react with the pH balance in their gut and the mosquito will implode. Spraying must occur shortly after rain or early in the morning when the winds are lowest and the humidity is highest to draw the larvicide down. Aerial spraying increases

the chances of reaching abandoned cisterns or pool areas left unattended, hot spots for breeding. The last form of attack is aerial adulticide consisting of Dibrom with Naled. When a potential threat such as a suspected case of Zika or Dengue is reported to the Department of Health, FKMCD will use this insecticide to attack present, existing mosquitos. The Department of Health and FKMCD have already tested 35 suspected cases of Zika. Only one was confirmed a travel-related case, and the agency also discovered one case of locallyacquired Dengue.
One way to prevent an outbreak is to not get bitten. Personal protection is paramount. If traveling to an area where there is active transmission, use repellent. And do your part around homes and businesses to remove standing water. — Dr. Larry Hribar
FKMCD sends mosquito samples once a week to the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory in Vero Beach for testing.
About the GM mosquito The FDA has approved a test project allowing the release of genetically altered male mosquito, OX513A, developed by the Oxitec Corporation. Originally, the trial was set for the Key Haven neighborhood near Key West. However, due to public concern, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has approved two non-binding referendums on the Nov. 8 ballot, soliciting the opinions of all Keys residents and those just in the Key Haven neighborhood. According to FKMCD, because Key Haven is a peninsula, there is less likelihood for dispersal of the mosquito. FKMCD Director Michael Doyle said the project has three safe guards. One, the Ae. Aegypti mosquitoes only travel the equivalent of three city blocks in their natural lifetime. (For comparison, the Black Marsh Mosquito will travel up to 20 miles). Two, the mosquitoes have been genetically modified for sterility and will not be able to reproduce in the wild. Third, the lab-raised mosquito (150 generations) is less hardy than its counterpart in the wild, and has little chance of survival.
IT’S THE WOMEN Adult mosquitos feed on the nectar of plants for sugar, but only females feed on animals (humans, birds, reptiles, frogs) for the protein needed to produce eggs. Thus, they are the transmitters of disease. So far, it’s believed that only primates and humans can contract diseases via female mosquitos. There are no reported cases of dog, cat, or livestock infections.

merican Legion Post 154 has installed John R. Dick as the new commander of the post. The post held a ceremony and dinner especially cooked by the Sons of the American Legion on Aug. 12. The ceremony installed new American Legion officers, American Legion Auxiliary members, Sons of American Legion, and American Legion Riders. The Legion welcomed Gary Decker, District 14 Commander, and Rick Johnson, 3rd Vice Commander of the State of Florida, to install its new leadership and continue the mission of serving veterans in the community. Upcoming Legion meetings are planned to discuss outreach efforts by the organization. “I want the community to be well aware of the American Legion, and some of the things we do,” said Dick. “POW/MIA day is Friday, Sept. 16. The event is open to the public, and is typically a solemn ceremony.” Along with serving veterans in the community, Dick wants the local American Legion to up its efforts in honoring the first responders. “First of all I’d like to thank the turn out, the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, and the Sons of the Legion, who cooked an amazing meal,” said Dick. “I’d also like to thank the city of Marathon and the community. Thank you for supporting us.” —Weekly Staff report

“We are very excited preparing for this new season, planning our coaches and referees training classes, filling up volunteer positions, and taking care of the last details before the opening ceremony,” said Arno Silva, a regional commissioner. “A group of trained volunteers have been running this program, making it the best experience for our kids to enjoy soccer,” said Silva of the 25-year-old local club. “AYSO Marathon’s goal is to continue helping our kids athletic development as well as socializing them with new friends.” AYSO boasts 56 teams in Key West. An off-shoot of the program, Key West Strikers, is a travel soccer team for ages 8-15 that competes in tournaments throughout Florida.
A
s far as organizations go, this one is probably the largest in the Keys. The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) serves about 1,300 island kids every year. There are 105 teams Keyswide, dozens of community sponsors and just as many youth referees. That’s right — some kids play, some kids blow the whistle. AYSO has a dedicated board, division coordinators and referees with a leadership flow chart to rival that of the United Nations. For every team, there are at least two parent volunteers — one coach, one assistant coach. These 200-plus volunteers follow AYSO directives: everyone plays, teams are talent balanced, and positive coaching and good sportsmanship matter. “The program took off in the early 2000s in Key West and Homestead. Key West alone has grown to over 600 players,” said Mike Hartley, AYSO coach and father. He said the program goes beyond producing the next level of Olympians. “After the hurricane in 2005 all regions were up and playing soccer within two weeks of being allowed back in the Keys so we could try and get the kids’ minds off what the town looked like.” Founders Park in Plantation Key is the official home of the Upper Keys Region 864, which includes kids from Tavernier, Long Key, and Ocean Reef. The season runs from midAugust to Thanksgiving. Kids from Region 864 in divisions U10 TO U16 will compete in the “Hurricane Cup” in mid-December. Coordinator Mark Turbessi said he expects about 34 teams and 400 players in his region alone. AYSO also has a big role in the development of youth leaders. Last year, the organization had 25 youth referees in Key West, ages 10 and up, managing games on Friday and Saturdays. The skills and duties they learn prepare them for a lifetime of leadership and fair play. “AYSO provides the youth with role models and a safe and fun place for the kids to be active and learn,” said Karl Markowski, referee administrator. In Marathon, Region 705’s season begins practice after Labor Day. A week later, games begin and run through mid-November. This year, the region boasts more than a dozen teams and the younger teams are co-ed. The Marathon Community Park fields are the official home for Region 705. Practices are held twice a week for all divisions, (except for the 4- and 5-year-olds), and games are typically held on Saturday mornings. Following the regular season for both Upper Keys and Marathon leagues, AYSO “All Star” teams will compete in playoff style tournaments. Kids from Marathon’s Region 705 in the U8 to U16 divisions will compete in the January “Conch Cup.”
Just for Kicks
AYSO is setting up for another year
Player Jack Behmke was one of the first-generation kids to go through the program from start to finish. He was on the team that traveled to Cuba to play a friendly game in 2011 and won the 2010 and 2011 Championships with the Key West Strikers. Behmke not only played but worked as a referee and was Youth Volunteer of the Year in 2010 and 2016. He will head to Ohio State University this fall with a $1,000 AYSO scholarship in his pocket. “It gave me a place to develop my skills both as a player and as a young man,” said Behmke, “I learned how to bridge relationships with people both on and off the field.” It is never too late to volunteer and teams always need the help. It takes a village to run such an organization but the community support and dedication always shows at kick off. All AYSO registrants must sign up online. Registration is $110 per child with financial aid and sibling discounts available. Visit www.eayso.org for more information. AYSO players are divided by age group: DIVISION AGES U-19 16-17-18 U-16 14-15 U-14 12-13 U-12 10-11 U-10 8-9 U-8 6-7 U-6* 5
(*Some regions may include both 4- and 5-year olds on U-6 teams, others have a separate U-5 division for 4-year-olds.)

EDUCATION
NEW TEACHERS
MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 19, 2016
LAURA KULISZ Laura will be teaching the second grade at Switlik and has previous teaching experience in first through third grade. She received both a bachelors (sociology) and masters (education) from the University of Massachusetts, her home state. She likes Walt Disney’s theory about moving forward: “… opening new doors and doing new things because we are curious.” Her hobbies include traveling and spending time with family and friends. LYNN STRAUBE Originally from Punta Gorda, Florida, Lynn has come to Marathon to teach first grade. She laughingly describes her own student career as “dazed and confused” and says her guilty pleasure is fried, fatty foods. “The best part of the school year is watching kids grow as readers,” she said. Lynn likes to spend time sailing or hanging out with her husband and dog.
MERLOU ROBINSON “Fair isn’t everyone getting the same thing. Fair is everyone getting what they need to be successful.” That’s Merlou’s teaching philosophy and she is tasked with teaching the gifted program and Exceptional Student Education. Originally from Kansas, she received both a bachelors and masters from Fort Hays State University. She has 10 years experience teaching in Kansas, and nine at Big Pine Academy. She is married to Rob Glazer and has two married sons and two grandchildren. MILDRED BLANKENSHIP Originally from Virginia, Mildred will be teaching Title 1 at Stanley Switlik Elementary. “I was a focused student and a high achiever. I knew I wanted to go to college and teach and coach,” she said. Mildred likes the beginning of the year and will spend her free time enjoying the activities the Keys have to offer — swimming and water activities.
MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 19, 2016 Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? Mr. Bish, my professor, because he helps me when I need it. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? ESOL, English as a Second Language, because it helps me with my English. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? Now we live in a place that we love. What advice would you give to a freshman entering high school? Always do your homework and study for the test. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? I like actor, director, writer Adam Sandler. What are your plans after high school? I want to go to college. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … the meaning of happiness.
ALESSANDRO MUSTACCHIO
Matthew and Raul are happy to be back in school! Good luck to all our students. - your friends at Marathon Lumber and Building Supply 11401 1st Ave. Gulf • 305.743-3688 • www.marathonlumber.com

Danielle Deslongchamp makes The Mermaid at Tarpon Creek Bar and Grill
Tarpon Creek Bar and Grill
T
he Mermaid – a specialty cocktail at Tarpon Creek Bar and Grill behind Holiday Inn Express, between the Key Colony Beach and Coco Plum light – may be as pretty as the view overlooking Bonefish Bay. Made with Absolut Citron, lime juice and Blue Curacao with a little lemonade, bartender Danielle Deslongchamp says it’s one of the favorites among those who visit
LIVE MUSIC the bar. “I love the employees and the view,” she said, after working at Tarpon Creek since February. “The view is definitely the best part.” Deslongchamp said her favorite thing on the lunch menu is the hot Cuban press. “We have a good lunch place,” she said. “And, a great $8 lunch special every day.” She added that if The Mermaid didn’t float your boat, they also have a popular Lime in the Coconut, which is even rimmed with shredded coconut. She moved to the Keys from Massachusetts five years ago to beat the cold winters and fishing. “I caught a shark a couple weeks ago,” she said about one of her fishing experiences. “I let it go, it was a baby blacktip.” She also likes kayaking, and just about anything to get her out on the water.

Benefit for musicians
John Kotch, owner of Sunset Grille and Raw Bar, is hosting a “Starving Artists” benefit for local musicians. It’s a response to the city’s recent denial of an amendment to the business’ operating plan to allow amplified music after 9 p.m. The benefit is set for Sunday, Aug. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. “We’ve been getting donations from vendors of hotdogs, burgers, and beer,” he said. “Every dime we make, we will give the proceeds to the nowout-of-work musicians who played here.” Kotch said it’s a gesture of good will towards the artists and a method of keeping the issue alive in the public eye. — Weekly Staff report

Nearly 17,000 pounds of electronic waste collected at the Long Key Transfer Station awaits transportation to a recycling center in Miami.
A
t Monroe County’s Long Key Transfer Station at Mile Marker 68 last week, 28 pallets weighing 16,824 pounds were collected and transported to Miami for recycling. The contents: obsolete and broken electronics. It was the sixth load of e-waste picked up this year by family-owned Electronic Recycling Center, Inc., bringing the total to 98,219 pounds. Monroe County is on track to top last year’s collection of 99,500 pounds of e-waste. “We already are seeing a lot of flat screen TVs,” said Bill Grant, supervisor of Monroe County’s Transfer Stations. “People don’t repair TVs like they used to.” Obsolete electronics are one of the fastest growing portions of the country’s waste stream. This type of waste includes computer monitors, CRT screens, plasma screens, televisions, LCD screens, laptops, printers, copiers, faxes, calculators, computer towers, stereo systems, keyboards, mouse(s), cell phones, speakers and telephones. Recycling these items lowers the amount of waste that goes to landfills and helps protect the environment by keeping toxic materials from contaminating the soil and leaching into ground water. Some materials are reused and re-engineered for new and innovative products. Monroe County accepts residential e-waste free of charge at its three transfer stations. For more information or the addresses of the transfer stations, go to http://www.monroecounty-fl.gov. - Contributed
