Coffee brings a lot to the table. It can make the difference between a morning and a “good morning.” As students, coffee was always there to help us with late night assignments and classes scheduled too early. As adults, it helps transition into the workday and likely reduces workplace violence. And these days, as the only “safe” vice left to the law-abiding readers of The Weekly, it comes in a boggling amount of varieties. So the Weekly asked locals to …

Correction: The City of Marathon denied Sunset Grille & Raw Bar’s application to play amplified music. A brief notice about a benefit concert in last week’s issue incorrectly stated the facts.

Council approves 80 new units including some existing structures

n Tuesday, the Marathon City Council approved 80 new affordable units in the Middle Keys city. Forty-six of those are attached to a recently approved development at Crystal Cove, near 50th Street and Overseas Highway in Marathon. The other 34 housing units already exist, but will be deed restricted as affordable for the next 99 years. The current crop of existing properties that will now be deed restricted as affordable belong to five companies: Callianasa Corp., Key Vaca LLC, Driftwood LLC, CB Schmitt Real Estate Company Inc., and Twenty-Third Street LLC. The affordable housing permits were made available to the City of Marathon through an interlocal agreement with Monroe County, but they come with a couple of strings attached — hurricane and habitability standards. Mayor Mark Senmartin wanted staff’s assurance that the properties would be inspected before the deed changes hands.

“We want to make sure this isn’t some dumpy trailer with the floor falling through. We don’t want developers yanking the market rate [building right] off the property to sell it and make a quick buck,” he said. The flow of affordable building rights from the county to the city is a way to incentivize a solution to the Keys’ high cost of living. Previously, the council has bemoaned the loss of “de-facto” affordable housing as it’s being developed into vacation rentals or high-end housing. By placing affordable deeds on existing property, and freeing up a market rate building right, developers are incentivized to provide a partial solution to the dearth of affordable housing. Currently, Monroe County has a bank of about 700 affordable housing building rights to dole out before time — and permits — run out in 2020 and has been willing to give them to other municipalities. “I expect Monroe County will rein that in eventually, but right now they are willing to work with us. Lets take that as far as we can,” said Vice Mayor Bill Kelly.

In other news: • Planning Directory and Deputy City Manager George Garrett told the council that the city has submitted an application to the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System (CRS). So far, the review has been favorable. It’s possible homeowners in Marathon could receive a 15-20 percent break on flood insurance beginning in May of 2017. • Garrett told the council that permits are underway for a kayak dock at Sunset Park on Grassy Key. • Senmartin initiated a discussion on whether or not the city should take over the collection of licensing fees from Monroe County. The discussion weighed the profits of fees versus the expense of another employee and also the possibility of conducting fire inspections for fees. • The council passed a resolution prohibiting for-profit events at Sombrero Beach. It also provides for exceptions that must be approved by a supermajority (4-1) of the council 60 days in advance of the event.

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 26, 2016

M

aggie Gutierrez was severely injured on Aug. 12 when a rogue wave swept she and her partner, Lisa Kaminski, into the ocean at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She later passed on at a California hospital. Gutierrez was a Key West attorney and supporter of many local causes, a well-loved friend, and an esteemed colleague. Kaminski, a hospitality executive, survived and is expected to return to the Keys soon. —Weekly Staff report Some of my best memories of Maggie were on the boat and at the sandbar relaxing for the afternoon — she loved being on the water — and our many happy hours or “Board of Directors meetings” as Maggie would call them. And Maggie was always a giver. Even after she passed she gave the precious gift of life through her organ donations to three people who otherwise might not have made it. A beautiful soul gone way too soon. —Bonnie Clydesdale

KEYS ATTORNEY REMEMBERED

“I am deeply saddened at the passing of my dear friend, confidant, advocate and aft-deck-sunset sister. She will forever be in the hearts of her friends, her community, by those who barely knew her – and most of all, in mine. ” — Carol Shreck

Maggie was one of my closest friends. We met at Rotary and hit it off instantly. Maggie was always ready for an adventure. She couldn’t wait to be part of Rotary’s July 4th fireworks celebration, she definitely worked hard and paid her dues to earn a spot on our “pyro” team. Maggie was fiercely loyal, sometimes to a fault. She defended her friends and came to the aid of strangers, occasionally at great personal expense. She was so much fun. I take heart knowing that every Maggie story is sure to have a laugh or a smile attached. I know no one that knew her will forget her and once the hurting stops and the story telling begins we’ll all smile when we think of Maggie. — Karen Thurman Maggie was the most generous person that I’ve ever met. When I look around my house, so many things remind me of her because she gave them to me. And she was loyal as the day is long and honest. Everyone knew how she felt about everything, but she could keep a secret, too. —Leigha Fox She was a passionate Orioles and Ravens fan (much to my chagrin) and had a great love of animals, particularly those in shelters. Maggie has a history of adopting “unadoptable” pets and providing the extra love and care they need in order to thrive. She created "Oscars Fund" to help support unwanted / sheltered animals in the Lower Keys. — Patty Ivey

ROBBY MAJESKA Small Business Owner Community Volunteer 2 Term Elected Key Largo Waste Water Commissioner

An open Letter to Marathon City Councilman John Bartus

I

take exception to your opinion published in the Marathon Weekly titled “The Day the Music Died; Unintended Consequences of government actions.” It’s disingenuous on your part to lead people to believe that you and others lost income because the City Council did not change the conditional land use agreement to allow the Sunset Grille and Raw Bar to play “amplified” music. The conditional land use agreement has always stated “no amplified music,” and the developers of this project agreed to that provision in order to allow the restaurant to be built in a residential neighborhood. Music has always been allowed, and remains allowed to this day until 9 p.m. Furthermore, Mr. Kotch knew that the conditional land use agreement contained that provision when he purchased the restaurant from the Chaplin family. How is it you can call people liars when you have never stayed one night in one of our homes and experienced what we have experienced with regards to the music played at the Sunset Grille and Raw Bar in violation of the law? As a matter of fact you have never been to our residence day or night, and have no idea how intrusive the music has been. And just how do you rectify the record that Mr. Greenman, attorney for the restaurant, has repeatedly admitted in hearing that the restaurant violated the agreement and did play music past 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve? And are you calling your own code enforcement officer a liar as well? The action taken by Marathon City Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron, and Councilman Dan Zieg protected the residents of Knight’s Key, and the City of Marathon; Kudos to them! The truth is it was Mr. Kotch’s actions that hurt the musicians. There is no reason for Mr. Kotch to have cancelled all live music since it is permitted until 9 p.m. And Mr. Kotch should have never permitted the “amplified” music to be played in violation of the agreement in the first place. The residents of Knights Key don’t want to punish anyone. They just want The Sunset Grille and Raw Bar to be respectful neighbors, park on their own property, maintain the gate, and stop intruding on our peace and quiet by playing “amplified music” period. You owe the residents of Knight’s Key, Marathon City Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron, and City Councilman Dan Zieg a great big public apology! Jennilynn Smith Marathon

Celtic Fest planning off to a good start

O

n behalf of the Florida Keys Celtic Festival Committee and St. Columba Episcopal Church, I would like to thank those who came out, including many locals wearing kilts, to Herbie’s Restaurant in Marathon on Aug. 7, to help us celebrate our second annual Kilts in the Keys event. Kilts in the Keys is a mid-year celebration to help promote the upcoming Florida Keys Celtic Festival scheduled for January 7-8, 2017. Thank you to Herbie’s Restaurant for donating proceeds from food and beverages sold that evening to The Hammock House and for the space to have the event. The Hammock House is a free after-school and summer camp program located at St. Columba Church and is the reason we have the Celtic Festival as a means of support for the children of Marathon to have a safe environment to stay and play. Thank you to the Marathon Chamber of Commerce, Marathon Rotary and The Weekly Newspapers for loaning us several tents. Thank you to Cliff Rydell for donating a free video of the event. Thank you to C. J. Geotis for donating a free video of The Hammock House. And thank you to a wonderful group of volunteers who worked really hard on a very hot day. We could not hold these events without the help of many volunteers. You are very much appreciated. Loretta Geotis, Director of Operations, Florida Keys Celtic Festival and The Florida Keys Celtic Festival Committee: Rev. Debra Maconaughey, Jodi Gonzales, Theo Derleth, Lynda Sheaks

Library marks another successful summer of reading

T

he Marathon library would like to announce the end of another successful summer reading program, On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! I would like to thank the eight presenters who gave their time and energy to our kids during our weekly presentations. Betsy Lefler of Marathon Yacht Club shared information about the Middle Keys Community Sailing Program, Kelly Grinter of the Marathon Wild Bird Center, Lloyd Wilkerson and Coasty of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District 7 Division 13 and Bob Weisman of U.S. Coast Guard Aux and Marathon Services by the Sea, Keith Douglas of Boy Scouts of America Florida Sea Base in Islamorada, Stella Diaz of Truly Nolan in Key Largo, Ellie Splain of Reef Environmental Education Foundation in Key Largo, and Beth Pinkus with her puppets from the Dolphin Research Center. These wonderful presenters highlighted the fun and unique activities available to us in the Keys, because we live here! How cool is that? I would also like to thank our sponsors who made summer reading possible. First the local chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher sorority, donated funds for reading prizes which were supplied by Put Your Name On Anything. We had prizes donated by Aquarium Encounters, the Art Studio, Crane Point Hammock, Island Time Diner Ice Cream & Deli, and of course Sweet Savannah’s who donated cupcakes for the awards party. I must say that I had no one turn us down when asked for donations for our children. Thank you, Marathon businesses, we couldn’t do it without you! Finally I’d like to thank the Community Coop Preschool and Kreative Kids Christian Academy for attending the programs as part of their summer programming. We had good attendance at the presentations and lots of fun in the children’s room. Children who read over the summer will have a better chance of retaining skills learned and be ready for the challenges of the new school year. Good luck Marathon children and thank you for a great summer. Remember: read lots, read often and come visit us at the library. Melody Dodamead, Children’s Librarian Assistant, Marathon library

Re: A sin tax on drinks and cigarettes

I

t is unbelievable how our politicians will try to milk more money from Monroe County residents. They are proposing a so-called "sin tax" on having a beer or cocktail at our local restaurants or taverns. I doubt many folks in the Keys would buy in on the idea that having a "cold one" constitutes a sin. It also may be a shock to the authors of this tax that us locals fill more establishments on a regular basis than tourists. It's the guy laying tile, those who make our schools and hospital run, all the fishermen and everyone else who call the Keys home who will have their pockets picked. We already know Monroe County has perhaps the highest cost of living in Florida and you want to hit us with a "sin tax!" If you really want to find a source of revenue that will help the county's coffers and not hurt the locals, put in a toll on the Overseas Highway for all non-resident and non-commercial vehicles. Government always has a use for more tax for more causes. It becomes insatiable and always throws vets, kids, seniors and other needy projects into the mix in an attempt to make us feel guilty. Perhaps proper budgeting and planning in the first place would not necessitate "Band-aid" solutions. Tourist and visitors, many who utilize or require county facilities, should pay a toll to help support our fragile and unique environment. Get creative, think big and stop looking to nickel and dime the local folks who,, when "It's Miller Time," want to meet with friends, enjoy a sunset and not have the price of their beer or cocktail jacked up because some yahoo thinks it's a sin! Give us a break! Bob Guerin Marathon (Editor’s note: Monroe County commissioners have directed staff to gather more information on the proposal. It’s unlikely the non-binding referendum question will appear on the November ballot.)

lise Mucha, 31, walked into a meeting with her mom and grandparents and a 41-page business plan binder. She was immediately shot down and told to return with an easel and wearing a suit as if she were presenting to a bank loan officer. So she changed out of her flip flops and convinced them to invest in Brutus Seafood, a favorite for locals and visitors who lunch in Marathon. The story began in November, though, when she brought chioppino (fishermen’s stew) to a friends’ house and the topic of restaurants and bars was raised. “I’ve always been a bartender,” she said, adding she comes from a family who owns several bars in the Orlando area and holds two degrees in marketing and psychology. That was the night she heard Brutus Seafood was for sale. On Aug. 16, she took over the eatery. Previous owner Letty Irwin was there on Wednesday helping ease Mucha into the craziness of owning a restaurant. Irwin said she is looking forward to playing more golf after handing over the reins, while manager Chelsey Irwin has already obtained her real estate license. “The Irwins have been so helpful,” Mucha said.

“It’s a family restaurant and I want to make sure it keeps that vibe.” The restaurant was turnkey, and most of the front of house staff and kitchen will remain the same, including some of the delicious recipes like the shrimp salad and the conch ceviche. “We have a really solid staff,” she said. Wendy Bonilla eats lunch there almost every day and said it’s still the same as it was, “I’ve never had a bad meal here.” She said she loves the menu’s variety and consistency in quality. While not changing any of the recipes, Mucha said she did want to add some things like more gluten-free options, having beers on tap, lunch delivery, and in October plans to open for dinner. She has some fun ideas for get-together at the restaurant, too. “This is will be a great place to continue having lunch and to hang out with friends,” she said. “Change is scary, especially in such a close knit area, but I want to make sure this stays a locals’ spot.” Mucha just bought a house behind the airport and said the honeymoon with Brutus Seafood is just beginning. Unfortunately it doesn’t consist of lying in bed and relaxing. So, yes, she’s married — to Brutus Seafood.

Robbie Majeska

C

Sylvia Murphy

ounty Commissioner Sylvia Murphy has held the District Five seat for the past 10 years. She ran unopposed in 2012 and finds irony in that her prior two, and current, opponents have all served on the Key Largo Wastewater Board. This year, both she and fellow Republican Robbie Majeska, a Key Largo business owner, vie for the seat. The Monroe County Commission election is a partisan race, but since both Majeska and Murphy are registered Republicans, and are the only two to qualify, all Keys voters, regardless of party, will cast a vote. Thus, the winner will be decided on Aug. 30. “We are in the middle of so many things. We are catching up from things that should have been done 12 to 14 years ago, and then of course the recession hit us. My main thing is the roads that get flooded. Neighborhoods like Stillwright Point in Key Largo, Stock Island, and all the low points of the Keys. This is ruining people’s cars. We’re talking about $40,000 vehicles just being ruined from driving through the flooded area. This is the biggie,” Commissioner Murphy said. Murphy has been a Tavernier

resident for 62 years and before running for public office, she was a member of the Monroe County Human Services Advisory Board, and a member of the Upper Keys Health Care Taxing District, or Trauma Board. She volunteered with the Tavernier Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Corps since and is a current officer of the Tavernier Community Association. Majeska moved to the Keys in 1998 to raise his family and open a small business in Key Largo, Keys Kritters. He was elected and served two consecutive terms on the Key Largo Wastewater Board, and said he’s proud of the board’s accomplishments. He said he’d also like to focus on Upper Keys’ traffic and the Florida Department of Transportation’s treatment towards Keys businesses. Both candidates have strong opinions on affordable housing. “Affordable housing in the Upper Keys should have been addressed 10 years ago when the housing allowance was reviewed. I do believe that the current commissioner let all the Keys money go to Marathon and the Lower Keys,” Majeska said. Commissioner Murphy said, “I don’t know what we are going to do with affordable housing, that is an ongoing issue, but I’d like to accomplish that during my next term.” The new term begins January 2017.

ELECTION SEASON

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 26, 2016

Race for 16th Circuit Judge draws qualified candidates HAMILTON VS. STOBER SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

Sharon Hamilton

W

Rob Stober

hen Judge Reagan Ptomey announced his retirement after 28 years on the bench, Sharon Hamilton and Rob Stober threw their hats in the ring. Hamilton resigned from her job in the judicial system in order to campaign, and Stober, a partner of the Hershoff, Lupino and Yagel law firm, has been attending events up and down the Keys. Hamilton touts her court system experience. She has served as both the director of judicial case management and general magistrate for the 16th Circuit in Monroe County. Before that work, she was a private attorney for two decades “The general magistrate position is quasi judicial — I sat on the bench and presided over hearings and motions,” she said, adding that she wrote opinions on more than 4,000 cases that were then sent on to the presiding judge to sign off on. In layman’s terms, that job is akin to “assistant judge.” She said she can be effective immediately as she understands the inner workings of the judicial system. “I understand how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together — the court reporters, jail personnel and public defenders.” Stober is a private attorney with

19.5 years of experience, and a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law. “What I bring to the table is well rounded experience — I’m a lawyer, a businessman, a member of the community and a family man,” Stober said. Stober worked for a law firm specializing in admiralty and marine law, as a staff attorney for Geico and, in the Keys, a more general caseload of civil litigation involving all types of disputes. Both Stober and Hamilton emphasize the temperament a judge should have. “The most important thing a judge can bring to the bench is wisdom and an understanding of the community,” Stober said. “The right decision isn’t always the most popular one. It’s going to take courage to do this job.” “As a judge, I would treat people with fairness, respect and dignity,” said Hamilton. “It’s often a judge’s job to de-escalate the situation, not escalate the situation — especially in family court.” Stober said his leadership skills are up to the task of assuming the bench. “At 22 years old, I was in charge of a $450,000 budget and hiring and firing crew aboard a private yacht that I was captain of. I’ve managed a staff of legal assistants and hired experts. I am a partner in a law firm. Twice, I’ve been president of the chamber and for the Rotary Club I am the volunteer coordinator of 350 people who work the Nautical Flea Market. I have shown myself capable of handling any situation,” Stober said.

Incumbent faces qualified challenger in Clerk of Court race HEAVILIN VS. MADOK

Amy Heavilin

Kevin Madok

I

ncumbent Monroe County Clerk of Court Amy Heavilin is being challenged by a former employee of the same office. Kevin Madok previously served as assistant finance director under Clerk of Court Danny Kolhage. The county clerk serves a four-year

term. Heavilin says she leads by example and wants to continue projects she’s started as Clerk, which include e-recording, e-notices, and more. “I have a unique set of gifts, talents and experience that exceeds my opponent’s for this job,” she said citing credentials such as State of Florida Certified Clerk and Comptroller, CPA, Certified Fraud Examiner, and Internal Auditor. At a recent Hometown PAC meeting, Heavilin was asked about tension in the Clerk’s office. “The transition has been very challenging,” she said about high turnover rates — 18 employees retired, and 17 moved to other county agencies, and others who relocated. “Sixty-eight percent of my staff turned over.” To help with the turnover, she wants to offer employees defined career paths, competitive compensation packages, flexible scheduling, and professional development opportunities. According to the Clerk, she said there are only four vacancies in her almost 100-person staff.

Madok said the issue is leadership. “I wouldn’t be running if I didn’t think I could do a better job,” he said. “There is a lack of stability and predictability in the office right now.” He said the issue with retention lies in employees being constantly repositioned to different roles within the office. “Most of the tasks require experience, and no one can get that when they are being moved around so often.” Madok previously has been elected to Layton City Council and served on the Florida Keys Community College Board of Trustees. Currently, he’s in charge of strategic planning for Monroe County. Heavilin said it’s easy to criticize until you walk a mile in the Clerk’s shoes. She cited the need to reopen the accounting ledgers to make adjustments to include wastewater assessments from previous years. “This office impacts other county offices largely,” Madok said. “The Clerk’s office is the nerve center of the entire county and the Clerk’s role is to serve them.” The Clerk of the Court effectively works as both the head accountant and head secretary for Monroe County — performing the accounting duties and managing the official record. The winner of the Aug. 30 Republican primary will face Democrat Ron Saunders.

Full blown, countywide contests require a tremendous time commitment because of the linear makeup of the Florida Keys. To win a race, candidates are expected — if not required — to attend multiple, weekly Rotary club meetings (there are seven in Monroe County), the monthly Chamber of Commerce’s After Hours and luncheons (there are five in the Monroe County), plus all the charity events, political forums and the regularly scheduled meetings for their perspective office. nited Airlines will begin seasonal service at Key West International Airport, with flights to and from the airline’s gateway hubs at Newark Liberty International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International

Airport. Beginning Dec. 16, 2016 and running through May 4, 2017, United will be the only carrier to offer daily nonstop service between the New York area and Key West. United’s Newark (EWR) is its largest hub operation in the New York City area and offers customers convenient connections throughout the Northeast and Midwest. From its hub at Chicago O’Hare (ORD), United also will provide Saturday only nonstop service to Key West — the only nonstop service between Chicago and Key West. This service begins Jan. 7 and will run through April 29, 2017, with Embraer 170 regional jet aircraft, with 70 seats. Tickets for these flights to Key West went on sale last week Aug. 20. “United is the only airline to offer nonstop service between Key West and our hubs in Chicago and New York/Newark,” said Brian Znotins, United’s vice president of Network. “While other airlines are adding seats to the same airports in Florida, we saw an opportunity to offer customers more choice and convenience by serving Key West nonstop from Chicago and New York.”

During the more than yearlong effort working with the United to bring these flights to Key West, Airport Director Donald DeGraw said the airport received tremendous support from the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners, the Key West Chamber of Commerce and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. The BOCC, which oversees the airport, waived airport fees for the first year of service. “We all worked very hard to make this happen,” DeGraw said. “Nonstop jet service to Newark and Chicago will provide our customers with unparalleled convenience and worldwide connectivity, and of course United’s first class customer service.” United Ground Express, a subsidiary of United Airlines, will provide airport ground handling services at Key West – including customer service, station operations, and ramp and cargo. Several new jobs will be created with the start of United service at Key West International Airport. United Ground Express is now accepting applications. To apply, go to www.unitedgroundexpress.com. 3. Pastor Larry White Jr. gives a passionate and moving sermon about second chances. 4. Judith White reads a ‘Top 20’ list of things that will change in the next 100 years. White says the list was inspired by the classic cartoon, “The Jetsons.”

he Saint Paul A.M.E. church in Marathon celebrated 100 years of worship on Aug. 20. One of the oldest and longest standing structures in Marathon, Saint Paul was originally the first school for African American children in the community. A hundred years later, the congregation is diverse, lively, welcoming, and still growing. The centennial anniversary of St. Paul was also an opportunity for Pastor Larry White Jr. to focus on the theme of second chances, and what is yet to come. For the church this means the expansion of a fellowship hall and new parking accommodations. Architect and project manager Annisa Davis of K2M Designs in Marathon, revealed the expansion plan to the congregation — the original church will remain untouched while a two-story fellowship hall will be constructed alongside, adding an additional 2,400 square feet. Above the fellowship hall will be offices for clergy members, and outside, a covered picnic area will comfortably seat guests. “It can bring the community together, that’s my goal,” said Davis. The theme of the celebration, second chances, is a theme all too familiar to Pastor White, who in 2009 returned to preach after a 10-year hiatus. When the offer to return came to Pastor White, his faith and optimism guided him back. “After 10 years away I finally returned to do what I love,” said White. That same optimism is the driving force behind the plans for the expansion hall says Pastor White. St. Paul is seeking 33 pledged donations of at least $1,000 from the community to fund the initial construction of the fellowship hall. Donors will have their names placed on the planned “Wall of Faith.” For more information on how to participate in the expansion, call 786-554-1285 or email st.paulamemarathon@ att.net. T

he Florida Keys Country Club hosted a full moon Glow Party on Aug. 20. The event featured drinks and food, a 50/50 raffle and prizes, hula hoop contest, limbo, a face and body glow in the dark painting station, and hosted a Habit for Humanity’s silent auction. Hundreds of locals came and enjoyed the festivities throughout the evening. “We had a nice crowd, and hope to make this a monthly event. We’re going to keep providing great food, a variety of entertainment, and we won’t ever have a cover charge,” said Theo Derleth, of the Country Club. “It should continue to be great fun.” Florida Keys Country Club full moon parties are open to the public. Organizers are still tallying the results of the silent auction to benefit Habitat for Humanity, but thanks the community for its generous support. The proceeds will go to building affordable homes in Marathon. Gift certificates, beauty products, limousine rides, jewelry, snorkeling trips and parasailing trips, and a stay-cation package were some of the items auctioned off. “Habitat for Humanity

would like to thank all the local businesses for their support,” said Christine Young, Habitat’s local executive director. “We are proud to offer non-for profit organizations an opportunity to be featured at our already great event and great attendance,” said Kirsten Difender, of the Florida Keys Country Club. “Everyone had a blast and it was all thanks to a job well done by the staff, Habitat volunteers, Lights Out Entertainment, and a couple hundred friends who came out to party.”

ore than 200 Boys and Girls Club kids spent the summer taking field trips to Marlins’ games in Miami, and to attractions around town, whip creaming their teachers, and having a blast at the 1400 United Street Reynolds School locale. What they didn’t enjoy was the lack of air conditioning in this summer’s heat, an occasional rodent sighting, or swimming to camp in the rain. “We need to get out of the Reynolds School,” said Dan Dombroski, CEO of the club, who is seeking to move the club to Bayview Park, a centrally located permanent home. “It’s been my dream to have a permanent spot, a nice place to go. We don’t need a palace, but somewhere safe.” The Key West City Commission has put aside $500,000 from funds generated by the BP oil spill settlement. That will be used for renovations of the structure at the park. Dombroski hopes to bring in another $1 million through a capital campaign, grants, individual donations, and contractors donating skills to the project. “We can do it in phases, but we need to get out of Reynolds School as soon as possible,” he said, citing the faults. The Southernmost Boys and Girls Club, which includes the Key West location, and a location on Big Pine Key, provides summer and after school care for working families in the community. Stephen Bender, of Niles Sales and Service, said his children Victoria and Beau looked forward to going to the camp each day during the summer. “All the folks working there do a great job and the kids constantly told me how nice everyone was,” he said. “As parents, we also liked that they took care of so much for us. We didn’t have to pack lunch, and pickup times were extremely flexible. We will definitely be back next summer.” The club teaches life skills, offers academic tutoring and help, but most of all, offers a fun, safe place for kids. The most important thing Dombroski stressed was not taking money away from the kids. “We need to keep this affordable for all families,” he said. “We want to put the money back into the kids, rather than into rent.”

Locals celebrate ‘VJ Day’ Victory over Japan signaled end of World War II GABRIEL SANCHEZ

T

gabriel@keysweekly.com

here will be a VJ Day celebration lunch on Friday, Sept. 2 at noon, sponsored by the Tavernier Elks Lodge 1872. VJ Day is the day the Japanese formally surrendered to allied forces in the South Pacific and the official end of World War II. The event has been coordinated by local veteran Capt. John Felso, a former Army helicopter pilot and Ray Eubanks, Exalted Ruler of Lodge 1872. Felso is graduate of the Army’s helicopter pilot program of 1968, and later went on to pilot civilian fixed-wing aircraft, such as the PT17. “We have county transportation to pick up anyone who needs it, and for veterans the meal is free,” said Eubanks. “We have two World War II members at our lodge. We like to do a lot for our veterans because without them we wouldn’t have what we do today.” The celebration will pay homage to the brave Americans who fought in WWII. The final remnants of the “Greatest Generation” are few and far between, those left are approaching 100 years old. Keys families with living veterans who served in WWII are encouraged to bring their hero. All WWII veterans, and their caregivers, will be provided free lunch and drinks. The music of Eva Joyce, a former USO performer for U.S. troops, and the late Glenn Miller Band, a popular big band of the era, will be the entertainment. All veterans are welcome, in or out of uniform, as well as the public. Felso hoped to have two WWII veterans that served aboard the USS The Bunker Hill (CV-17), which was struck by two Japanese kamikaze planes on May 11, 1945. Unfortunately, these heroes have passed on, one recently, but have left an incredible story of bravery. Pearly Lee was a Navy sailor working propulsion systems in the lower decks of the Bunker Hill. When the Kamikaze planes engulfed the air craft carrier in flames, the only way Lee and others survived suffocation was by taking turns breathing inside a spray of salt water, which contained some oxygen. “I knew Pearly well. If you could pick anyone to be your grandfather, he’d be the one. He was a gentleman in every sense,” said Felso.

Bernie F. Thompson, known simply as Juicy, was an aircraft gunner in the air wing of the ship. “His nickname was Juicy because for his deadly precision. After leaving the battle, the flight group returned to find the ship burning. They were forced to land aboard another nearby vessel after the danger had passed. Miraculously, the Bunker Hill was able to return to port, though it had taken heavy damage and casualty. Felso knew both men personally, and said that connection was just one of the inspirations to organize this lunch. Non-military guests are asked for an $8 donation and reservations are suggested by calling 305-8521872. Transportation for handicap vets and others will be provided by Monroe County Transportation, passengers must be registered, if they are not already. Call 305-292-4424.

Ciao Hound, a new, must-go eatery THERESA JAVA

I

theresa@keysweekly.com

t’s simple, it’s elegant and most of all, delicious. Ciao Hound Italian Kitchen & Bar is Postcard Inn’s newly revamped restaurant. It pairs authentic Tuscan flavors with fresh Keys-sourced ingredients. It boasts the comfort of a bygone era with stylish wallpaper and classic Sinatra tunes without being pretentious. Executive Chef Dario Olivera said his favorite dish to create there is the margherita pizza. “Simple makes me happy. It’s just good tomatoes and fresh basil that give it such flavor,” Olivera said. His favorite selection to eat from the menu, though, is the “Italian” — an open-face panini with solid white albacore tuna, arugula, black olives and sliced hard-boiled egg, created by Regional Executive Chef Andy Gayler. “We really put our heads together to come up with the menu,” Gayler said, and it’s evident at first bite. The burrata caprese salad is solid proof of his modus operandi. It’s a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. It rests on a bed of arugula and halved grape tomatoes and red onions. Amy Cornaire, the director of catering and events at Islamorada Resort Company said, “The bruschetta is so good and I love the cutting board and mason jar presentation. It’s almost too cute to eat.” Ciao Hound advertizes itself as family-friendly and affordable. And, as its name suggests, a dogfriendly restaurant. Beloved fourlegged companions are allowed to dine al fresco, alongside families on the veranda and are often offered a doggie bag.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE Ciao Hound features a full bar serving wines by the glass and bottle, local and imported beers, classic mixed drinks and Italian-inspired cocktails, including the Limoncello Sunrise, Tiramisu Mudslide and Coconut Espresso Martinis. The Loaded Bloody Mary is served with prosciuttowrapped shrimp and a chicken wing. On tap, there is the Holiday Isle IPA and a Tangerine Wheat beer among others.

CIAO HOUND ITALIAN KITCHEN & BAR 84001 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada 305.664.2321 Open for lunch Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., and dinner daily from 4 to 10 p.m. Hours will expand in season.

Top: The pesto chicken Panini, foreground, should be accompanied by it’s ‘fratello,’ the Italian panini with solid white albacore tuna, arugula, black olives and sliced hard-boiled egg. Middle: Prosciutto-wrapped shrimp makes an excellent appetizer. Bottom: Regional Executive Chef Andy Gayler, left, and Executive Chef Dario Olivera are proud of the menu.

he state Department of Health and Florida Keys Mosquito Control District hosted its third educational and public outreach event about the mosquito-borne Zika virus on Aug. 24 in Islamorada. Students from Florida Keys Community College, staff of Mariners Hospital, members of FKMCD, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, community emergency response teams, Medical Reserve Corps, and concerned residents all came to view the presentation. Repellants was handed out, and the initial overview of the Zika virus was discussed. At the completion of the presentation, 34 volunteers were split into 15 groups to hand out nearly 2,000 educational fliers in the Upper Keys. “This was the largest turn out we had of the all the presentations. The crowd was engaged and asking questions,” said Alison Morales-Kerr, public information officer with the state Department of Health. “Where the presentation lasted 30-45 minutes previously, we spent nearly an hour talking about outreach ideas.” On Tuesday, the state Department of Health announced 15 new cases — four in Orange County, four in Miami-Dade County, three in Osceola, one in Collier County, and one in Pinellas County. Five of the cases (Pinellas County and MiamiDade) are not travel related. The Miami-Dade cases originating in the Wynwood neighborhood (MiamiDade) were first reported in July, and have now been confirmed. On Thursday, another Keys’ case was reporter, see sidebar. Florida Department of Health’s Morales-Kerr, Cynthia Wright, and Mosquito Control’s Beth Ranson presented various aspects of the virus. The seminar covered the origin of the virus, symptoms and incubation, its spread in Latin America, travel related and non-travel related cases, transmittal, and prevention methods around the home and outdoors. Also in attendance were Dr. Stanley Zuba, Democratic candidate for Mosquito Control District 4 race, and U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo, who also took to the streets to help educate locals.

MARATHON WEEKLY / AUGUST 26, 2016 This is a beautiful suit, but not particularly practical for Sandbar Sunday.

ENDLESS SUMMER We live in the Keys, so here are some tips for finding your next perfect swimsuit

• Wear the right suit for the occasion. While on vacation a few years ago, I entered the LEAH MAKI ocean during high surf warnings. I only waded in is a fashion-obup to my knees but when sessed style Keys that wave came in it took blogger, formerly from Minnesome down like a freight ta. Her current train. As I was rolled to infatuations shore, I came up for air include statement in a sandy mess only pieces, dramatic to realize my bikini top heels, red lipstick and vintage had moved and was no costume jewelry. longer covering what it Visit LeahsFabuwas meant to. I had accilousFinds.com dentally exposed myself for more of her to an entire beach full of musings. vacationing families. It was then that I realized my suit wasn’t meant for swimming. If you’ll be swimming or active, be sure to chose a suit that will stay in the right place for your activities.

The recent Swim Fashion Week in Miami Beach featured hundreds of bikini clad models strutting the runway wearing resort and swim collections for 2017. The latest and greatest in swim design is always inspiring to see, but at times makes me realize how unwearable many of the designs actually are. The most outrageous designs included feathers, fringe, head-to-toe mesh, corsets, and crocheted skirts. It’s not just the embellishments that make them not so user friendly but those itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikinis have gotten even smaller. According to a local news station, bikinis are half the size and 16 times more expensive than they were 25 years ago. Below are a few tips to help you find the best suit for you. • Make sure the suit is wearable. If your suit is the size of dental floss, it’s likely it is not meant be worn in public. Likewise, wearing a suit with non water-friendly embellishments or capes, likely a drowning hazard, are also not swim friendly. There are some suits with designs so intricate that they really can never be worn past the runway. They more closely resemble pieces of art than they do clothing. Could you imagine trying to get one of these suits off in time to use the restroom?

• Beware of cutouts. If you choose a chic designer suit with cutouts and mesh inserts, don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Forgetting sunscreen in those areas is a tan line nightmare waiting to happen and will leave your body looking like a patchwork quilt. • Be confident. The right suit is the one that makes you feel confident. On a recent girls’ trip, I watched 10 of my besties spend two sun-soaked days in swimsuits boogie boarding on the ocean, riding down the waterslide and lounging poolside. These women are beautiful not because they have perfect bodies but because of the confidence they each have in who they are. Love your bodies regardless of your size and never be afraid to rock what you got.

Special Olympics swim meet held in Upper Keys

It is with great sadness I report that on August 7, 2016, Joseph Pinder, a former Florida Keys Mosquito Control District Commissioner passed away. He served on the board from September 1, 1977 December 31, 1994. He was a real champion for the employees of the District. When he was chairman of the board he received a letter from the employees of the District expressing: “deep appreciation to Mr. Joseph Pinder, for his deep concern and dedication to improving the working conditions, as well as, the morale of the employees during his tenure as chairman of the board of commissioners.” He also was commended by the staff, “on his efforts to upgrade the mosquito control program and for his conscientious interest in providing better mosquito control for the citizens of Monroe County.” Joseph Pinder was a fixture in the Florida Keys community and will be missed by many. Thank you to the Florida Keys Mosquito Control from the PINDER Family.

bout eight teams — ranging from Key West to MiamiDade — gathered Saturday at Founders Park in Islamorada for the Area 11 Special Olympics swim meet. The hot and sunny day began with an opening ceremony, complete with speeches, athletes on parade, and even a torch. Organized like a regular swim meet, with a couple of unique events, the athletes were all winners celebrating their wins with dancing and huge smiles. —Weekly Staff report SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly 1. One of the first events is a 25-meter ‘assisted swim.’ This mainland athlete had a huge smile on her face the whole way! 2. Monroe County Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter addresses the crowd during the opening ceremony. 3. Head referee Jorge Van Balen instructs Marathon High School swimmers on timing regulations.

Triathlete, Special Olympics Coach, Farceur

Questions with

HAYS BLINCKMANN/Keys Weekly

S

harp, quick-witted, dedicated — those are easy words to describe Kathy Gilmour, operations manager of Lazy Dog, board member of the Key West Tri Club, and aquatics coach and training chairperson of the Monroe County Special Olympics. A former North Shore New Englander who worked as a whale biologist for 12 years in Gloucester and Boston, Gilmour knows how to be tough but also enjoy life. She discovered Key West while delivering boats such as the Yankee Freedom for winter use in Key West. Eventually Gilmour (and the boats) stayed for good. As she said, “I’m like a plant. I need to be outdoors in the sun.” It is ironic that Gilmour helps run a company with the heading “lazy” because it is not a word to describe her. Gilmour trains six days a week for sprint triathalons and has completed 22 of them. Here’s the thing, she usually comes in last. “I participate in them,” she laughs, saying she studiously avoids the term “race.” To keep herself motivated and accountable, Gilmour started a blog, www.diaryofafatathlete, which she calls “my journey from fat to slightly less fat.” Hanging out with Iron men and women doesn’t phase her (“I operate my whole life on awkward,” she quips). But what she might call awkward, others would call inspirational. Here’s what makes Gilmour truly special, 12 weeks out of the year, she trains 15 Special Olympic swimmers, ages 14-58, to compete. She is their coach, their mentor and helps them race at the county, area and state level. Coaching Special Olympics takes toughness, takes humor and takes dedication. In her own right, Gilmour is an Iron woman — not just participating, but winning.

Kathy Gilmour with her Lazy Dog, Bonny Lass.

artender Dawn Reams has been serving up cocktails at Lighthouse Grill overlooking Faro Blanco Lighthouse since February. Moving to the Keys from a suburb of Detroit, Michigan in January. “It’s a paradise here,” she said with her arms in the air, showcasing the view. “I wanted to get away from the city life and there was no better place than here.” The Lighthouse rum punch is a fruity and refreshing mix of four rums – coconut, spice, light, and dark – and topped with a little orange juice and pineapple juice. “I love it here,” she said. “I get to meet people from all over the world, which is a nice change after being a legal secretary for 35 years.” She said her favorite thing on the menu that goes with the punch is the chopped salad. When she isn’t bartending and admiring the view, she is tending her garden, taking her dogs swimming and spending quality time with her husband, Tim. The Lighthouse is located at the Hyatt in Marathon, on the west end of the island, gulfside.

F

or TV buffs (a.k.a. couch potatoes) who aren’t aware, the Hallmark TV channel has signed former pop star Debbie Gibson for a new Hallmark Original Movie called “Summer of Dreams.” In this movie, Gibson plays a former teen pop star who gives it all up to teach music to a talented group of misfit kids. Now, wait—before you confuse me with someone who actually gives a crap about this stuff, the only reason I know about this new movie is because Hallmark runs old “Frasier” episodes (“Frasier” being one of the only shows of the past three decades worth watching). Anyway, the Hallmark movie is an almost-biopic that mirrors a lot of what happened in Debbie Gibson’s life, and may reintroduce her music to a legion of fans who are now approaching middle age themselves. It just might be a refreshing concept in the middle of all these copycat reality shows and sequels that populate the cable and satellite spectra. Seeing as we have run out of ideas for new programming for all these cable channels, perhaps it’s time for the creative staff at Keys Disease Central to come JOHN up with a few of our own suggestions for the network BARTUS executives to ponder. You’ll certainly want to set your DVR to record these soon-to-be-Emmy-winners! is a City Council member and a • Coming this fall on NBC: “Seinfeld’s Island!” Jerry, former Mayor of Elaine, Kramer, and the entire cast wind up marooned the City of Maraon a tropical desert island—not Manhattan—where thon. John is also no one cares about their inane brand of nothingness. a musician who “No phone, no lights, no motorcars, not a single Soup performs around town at various Nazi…” establishments. • Don’t miss the Sci-Fi Channel’s new hit series, “Star Trek: Excelsior,” starring George Takei (Lieutenant Sulu from the original series). In this 87th spinoff from Star Trek, Captain Sulu helms the USS Excelsior as he wanders throughout the galaxy exorcising the demons of having served under William Shatner all those years. Instead of the Captain’s Ready Room just off the bridge (as featured in many other spinoffs), the automatic swishing doors reveal a closet that Sulu comes out of during each episode. • Speaking of William Shatner, Bravo and C-SPAN team up to bring you the newest reality series: “Priceline Negotiator!” In this new show based on the hit commercials, Shatner combines Captain Kirk’s bravado with that powerful Priceline presence to forge a landmark Middle East peace agreement and a successful transition of power in post-Castro Cuba… all the while saving everyone involved bushels of cash in travel costs. • With lack of interest from the rest of the cast, Ray Romano will star in the CBS sequel, “Not Everybody Loves Raymond.” In this hilarious slapstick sitcom, Ray finds himself stranded in an all-white redneck Alabama town that can’t hide its distrust of the strange-talkin’ Yankee with a last name that ends in a vowel. • CBS and Spike combine forces to bring you the latest in the CSI franchise: “CSI-WWE.” Wrestlers by night, crime scene investigators by day, nothing gets past these massive hulks of law enforcement. When two or more investigators disagree on a theory, however, it’s “step in the ring, turn on the lights, and let’s get ready to rumble!” You might think that these potential new series don’t make a lot of sense. Neither does the man bun. If, however, these shows ever saw the light of day, I bet they would find an audience quicker than you can say “Celebrity Apprentice.” Watch on… • • • • • John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Fridays at Florida Keys Country Club, Saturdays at the Postcard Inn and the Key Colony Inn, and Sundays at Lorelei. www.johnbartus.com.
