Matt Babich, general manager at Southernmost Hotel Collection and Brewfest coordinator, started with one of Michigan’s finest — Stroh’s. (Haven’t heard that name in awhile.) But his tastes have been refined: “Now I like a nice porter.” There should be a few of those this weekend at Brewfest.

“For all you do, this Bud’s for you.” “Head for the mountains.” “It’s Miller time!” Yes, we are talking about beer, the deeply favored and flavored love child of grain and hops combined in such a way that it could make monks swoon. From ancient time to present, around the world, people have had a long-standing, devoted love affair with beer. So we asked locals…

Trish Gibson laughed when she thought of her first beer back in Pennsylvania, “Iron City Beer and Rolling Rock. But I had this great root beer beer at Brewfest that I loved, but don’t remember the company.” Okay Trish, according to Google, The Abita Beer company has a Root Beer and they will be at Brewfest this weekend. Happy hunting.

Kim Livingston, of Key West Art & Historical Society, remembers the German Löwenbräu, “because the bottles were so tiny.” Now, she doesn’t drink much beer, but “a Belgium Stella Artois would do.” Ironically, both now are owned by Anheuser-Busch.

Orion South, of WeCycle, originally from Kenosha, Wisconson loves his Miller High Life so much, “I named my boat High Life. I like Two Hearted Ale from Bell’s Brewery, too, but I still drink my High Life.” After all, it is the champagne of beers.

Brian Miller at Waterfront Brewery easily remembers his first beer. “Most likely it was MGD because my father drank a lot of it, so it was easy to steal. But my first good beer was Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Now I get the Truman IPA right here at work or a Black Tuesday Stout from the Bruery.”

A Key West Chamber member has alerted the community to a significant sign of mail fraud — failing to receive mail for successive days. According to reports, an identity thief applied for two credit cards in the member’s name and then applied online to the post office to have the mail forwarded to a mainland address in order to receive the new cards. The member said the same thing happened to a neighbor.

CAROL SHRECK will face a runoff with incumbent TIM ROOT for seat 3 of the KEY WEST UTILITY BOARD:
“I am going to continue canvasing — there are more roads, more houses and more people. That’s one of my favorite parts of the campaign — reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. THE ARTS
Local filmmakers have a weekend to make a short film SARA MATTHIS
I
sara@keysweekly.com
n mid-August, local teams had 72 hours to write, shoot and edit a complete short film with very specific parameters. The showcase — there’s no winners and no losers — attracts a mish mash of folks ranging from creative types to real estate nerds. The filmmakers, actors, production assistants and general dogsbodies converge on a Thursday to learn the details of their assignments. In 2016: Use a mango as a prop; have a character named Frances/Francis Eaton, and a character employed as a grocery bagger; and use the line: “Don’t look at me.” (By making those specific requirements, contest organizers ensure there’s no cheating, or “pre-production work.”) Then they have Friday, Saturday and Sunday to script, film and edit the piece that must be turned in on Monday.

KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
“What I love best about it is the sense of community and the collaboration that goes on,” said Juliet Gray, who co-directs the 72 Hour Film Challenge with Michael Marrero. “Because of iPhones and smartphones we all now have the ability to shoot video. This event encourages people to make a film and gives them a deadline to do it by.” This year about 20 local teams accepted the challenge. Gray said the collaborators come from all walks of life — some experienced filmmakers, others complete amateurs. Ditto the actors ranging from age 8 to those eligible for Medicare. “This is actually my second year,” said Jon Cannell, who recently returned to the Keys after a hiatus and was immediately sucked into the Key West arts scene. Last year, he drew the “film noir” category and produced a film called “The Lovelies.” “This year’s effort … well, we feel it’s a step up,” Cannell said. Many of the competitors are being a little cagey about revealing details of the films. They want to gauge the audience’s honest reaction when the films screen on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 7-8 at Tropic Cinema. “There is no better feeling than sitting in a movie theater and watching your movie on the big screen while eating popcorn,” said filmmaker Josh Mothner, a Middle Keys resident, real estate expert and political consultant. When asked for a synopsis of his film, Mothner responded, “Let’s just say it’s the apocalyptic result of a disastrous, national election.” Of course.

TALENT GALORE AT AQUA IDOL
Funds help AIDS Help
T
welve local singers have seven more weeks ahead of them on their journey to become Aqua Idol, a singing competition complete with judges — some nice, and some not so nice. All the funds raised during the eight week period is being donated to AIDS Help, and the singers are singing for one of four of the candidates running for King and Queen of Fantasy Fest. For Queen Candidate Kristen Livengood, come out and listen to the smooth sounds of Tony Yaniz, Mathias Maloff, and K-Mac, a.k.a. Roenin. For Queen Candidate Jane Rohrschneider, she has Bernadette Restivo, Shawn Montgomery and Joanie Sullivan. For King Candidate Tommy Ryan, he has Susee “Sugar Plum” Isherwood, Jennifer Grimm, and Joe Tripp. And, for Christopher Rounds, he has Trey, Ronnie and Charlie. The judges are entertainment in themselves, usually praising the singers, but some-
times throwing zingers their way, especially Tony Konrath, the critical judge on the podium. For this Aqua Idol, though, the contestants aren’t voted off as they have been in the past. “I’ll tell you one thing,” said contestant and local singer Kristen McNamara, who competed on American Idol in 2009, “the judges here are a heck of a lot nicer than the American Idol judges.” She said she is happy to sing in the karaoke style contest to help raise funds for a worthy cause like AIDS Help. The entertainer’s main goal is to amuse the crowd with their voices to help raise funds for the candidate they are singing for. Each week, the singers have certain criteria they have to meet in the song. On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the song needs to have King, Queen, or Royal in the title. Some will just sing, but others will put on a fascinating show, dressing the part, or even making up the words as they go. Aqua Idol benefiting AIDS Help will run at Aqua Nightclub on Duval Street on Tuesdays through Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. It lasts about one hour.

B
artender Justin, who also goes by the name of “Dirty,” says his favorite drink to serve at Lazy Gecko’s Back Bar is Dr. McGillicuddy’s Mentholmint straight up. “I like it because it’s already made and it was the closest thing I could grab,” he said as a flying coaster whizzed past his head mid-interview from another jealous bartender who wanted to be featured in the Key West Weekly. His co-worker, who wanted to remain anonymous, refused to comment on his character, but then couldn’t help but add, “I have nothing nice to say about that guy.” Dirty’s favorite part about working at The Gecko is all the “booooo-ze” he gets to touch. He purposely dragged the “oooo” part out as long as he could. He also said he likes his friends who come and visit him. He’s been working at the back bar for the past two years, but has been in Key West since he was 16 years old. When commenting on his extracurricular activities, again, his friends had nothing nice to say. Dirty said he likes lots of naps, hammocks to nap in, and good sleep. Right as the interview finished up, he was mortally wounded by a flying coaster, which was shaped like a ninja star, and had to step away to treat his substantial injuries.

Up and down the Keys, kids ages two months up to 18-years-old can receive free vaccinations to fulfill Florida school immunization requirements. It’s free for kids, regardless of financial background. If they’re insured, then the county will bill the insurance. If not, then it’s free. Immunizations are costly, and public, private, as well as most charter schools require a steady regimen of vaccinations upon registering kids for the academic school year. Monroe County offers help. Mary Turner, nursing director, champions the program. “Statistically we do a lot better with immunizations than a lot of other counties.” She attributes its success to people’s willingness to vaccinate their children, its free cost, the easy access and dedicated pediatricians who promote and supplement the program. Vaccinations offered are TDap, Hepatitis B, Polio, Measles-Mump-Rubella, and Varicella. Also available for young adults up to age 19, is the HPV vaccine, which could eradicate cervical cancer and cancers associated with the throat and mouth. The HPV vaccination requires three doses and can be very expensive in the private sector. Flu shots are also available. Flu shots are also available at local pharmacies offering vaccination services. Walgreens and CVS both conduct its respective immunization services. “It’s really important to get the shot as soon as possible,” said Pharmacist Aisha Oliver of CVS in Tavernier. “We’re happy to offer these services, no appointment or prescription needed.” “Walgreens is here to protect as many people as possible with vaccinations. Almost all insurances cover the full cost of flu vaccinations. We have fantastic pharmacists readily available for vaccinations throughout the Keys,” said Walgreens Manager Buddy Baron of the store near Publix in Marathon. Both drug stores recommend consulting with a healthcare professional before being vaccinated. To learn more about vaccines go to www.immunizeflorida.org, a user friendly site to answer questions or www.cdc.gov. The Health Department offers shots at three locations in the Keys: the Roth Building in Tavernier (305-853-7400), Ruth Ivins Center in Marathon (305-289-2708), and the Gato Building in Key West (305-293-7500). —Gabriel Sanchez contributed to this report.

Like New, OBO, Looking for… The Key West yard sale page HAYS BLINCKMANN
I
hays@keysweekly.com
f you live in the Keys and have a Facebook account, you are probably a member of the Key West Yard Sale (KWYS) page. KWYS has made virtual “yard-sale-ing” the hottest trend since happy hour. It makes Craig’s list obsolete. And actual yard sales … why bother? Over 20,000 people have signed up to buy or sell just about anything. Cars, Rolexes, free baby diapers, advertise your business, get into an argument over politics (wait a minute). Yell at a neighbor? (HUH?!) How did a slightly used sectional sofa turn into a rant on fascism? While the KWYS page is a happy mecca of bargain consumerism, the online site has its good, its bad and its downright ugly. Ed Johnston, owner of Signs Unlimited and the site’s creator, and Audrey Samz, administrator, are the two unpaid individuals monitoring the page. Johnston and Samz keep it open on their computers and check it often, policing activity and reviewing the 100 requests a day for membership. “We are like good cop, bad cop. I pretty much adhere to the two rules and let everything else go. Audrey is much more strict, which is good, too,” said Johnston. Johnston’s rules are: to join one must have mutual Keys’ Facebook friends (there are a lot of requests from Indonesia and Thailand) and simply “to be polite in your transactions.” But the site can have some pretty nasty interchanges. A reported stolen bike can turn into a tirade of Democrats versus Republicans. People vent outrage over community affairs or stalk people. Samz will remove site offenders for repeated harassment when members report them. She often deletes posts that include hate speech, racism or defamation of a member. If an emotional situation escalates, Samz has advised members on multiple occasions to report the offender to the police. But the site also shows Key West’s humor and camaraderie. A woman posted looking for a size 17 shoe her visiting brother lost while passed out on the post office lawn. While some members just report a traffic accident, a power outage or the Taco Bell special of the day.
“It’s a great community page, really, locals helping out locals,” said Samz, who has made good friends, gone on a date, been invited to parties all while bargain shopping. For the most part, KWYS has deals from Ikea furniture to babysitting. Just remember your picture is attached to your comment, maintain integrity while selling and play nice. After all, we are One [Yard Sale] Family.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW here are certain people who help make Key West a better place without a lot of showy fanfare. When $2.7 billion dollars (yes, BILLION) is the value of tourism to Key’s economy — which generates $120 million in tax revenue, and creates one out of every two jobs — being the marketing research director of the Tourist Development Council is pretty darn important. Jessica Bennett is the woman behind the stats that help the TDC, city officials and business owners grow our city economically. These numbers keep us moving in the right direction, making Bennett nothing short of an expert on the strengths and weaknesses of our Southernmost Paradise. And here’s the thing, like Bennett herself, it is all largely positive. Bennett and her husband, Brian are born and raised Cape Cod natives. They assumed they would stay in Massachusetts forever pursuing their careers, raising kids and driving the minivan to soccer practice. Until one day landing in eight-degree weather at Logan airport, they agreed on “just six months in Key West before returning to the real world.” That was 13 years ago. Armed with a masters degree in Computer Information Systems from Bentley University, Bennett began at Sloppy Joe’s and the Chamber of Commerce. She won the Betsey J. Peterson award, a scholarship at Georgia’s Marketing Research Certification program and the TDC was Bennett’s calling. Remembering her own childhood vacations, she said, “My mom instilled in me how important that time was and I love how we help others find those experiences.” With a 99 percent positivity rating from tourists, Bennett knows the Keys are doing something right. And it is right for her. Daily she studies our stats on tourism, workforce housing, illegal rentals, etc. helping to improve our quality of life and her dreams come true. She’s driving her minivan in paradise.
Knowing Our Statistics
KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
1. Full Name? Jessica Heath Bennett. 2. Worst nickname? Ya-ya. My brother was 1 year old when I arrived and couldn’t say my name. My Greek friends found this hilarious since it means grandmother. 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Walt Disney. He was an incredible visionary entrepreneur who was once fired for not being creative enough. 4. If you could put one famous person on the TDC, who and why? Jimmy Buffett. He has turned his laid-back island lifestyle into a widely successful international brand. 5. Who is your celebrity crush and why? Tom Brady. Though I think my husband has it worse than me. Die hard Boston sports fans. 6. What’s the funniest thing that happens at the TDC? You know those crazy labor scenes in movies when a woman’s water breaks — dramatically — and everyone starts to panic and scrambles to get her to the hospital? That happened once in the TDC office. I was the woman. 7. Which TV character is your alter ego? Veronica Mars. 8. What is your nerdiest passion? Do not watch a show about furniture building with me. I will commentate throughout, excitedly pointing out the tools, pausing and rewinding and exclaiming, “Did you see that?” Furniture building is my nerdy hobby and I love it.
11.What was your first thought this morning? I have two kids; so, whose foot is in my eye? 12. Favorite guilty pleasure? Sundaes on Sunday at Sunshine Grille Café. You get to build your own sundae and part of the proceeds go to Healthy Start Coalition. 13. Best/ funniest Key West sighting or encounter you’ve ever had? My husband texted me to hurry down to the Lazy Gecko. He and his friend were hanging out in the back pool room with Tony Stewart. I walk in, don’t see my husband but I see his friend so I go talk to him and another guy he was standing with. After a bit I say, “So, where is Tony Stewart?” The other guy offers me his hand to shake and says, “Hi, I’m Tony Stewart.” 14. Worst job you ever had? I had a Devil-Wears-Prada-type boss once. 15. If you could change someone’s opinion, what would it be? I want to tell people to go for it, now. Don’t put it off because tomorrow isn’t promised to us. You’ll never regret the time you spend with the people who are important to you. Finish these sentences … 16. Living in Key West… for 24 hours, maybe 60 good years it’s still not that long a stay. 17. I will change … the station when Jon Bon Jovi is done singing. And not a second before. So stop begging, Brian.
9. Name a superhero that should live in the Keys? Wonder Woman.
18. Helping others … is the most rewarding thing you can do with your time. Really.
10. If invisible what would you do in Key West? That might make me brave enough to snorkel among sharks … but probably not.
19. When I go, I will … still follow my kids around in my ghostly form. Momma is a clinger. Sorry, kids. 20. Who would you have your last meal with? My family, the whole big extended crazy clan back in Agawam Beach.

rewing beer isn’t easy. It takes science, skill and, foremost, taste. Usually, brewers start with the gateway hobby — “at home brewing.” And when that works out (meaning their spouses and friends happily drink all of it), they head out to find other like-minded brewers with more room, more equipment and a larger audience. Thus a brewer and a local brewery is born. The Keys are a happy home to several local breweries equipped with talented local brewers who refine their craft, experiment with flavor and give locals and tourists a taste of, well, their own brew. Look for these guys this weekend during the seventh annual Key West Brewfest. For the complete schedule of events, visit keywestbrewfest.com.

KEY WEST The Waterfront Brewery Justin Stine, Head Brewer Stine spent six years brewing at home before going pro at Cigar City Brewing in Tampa. The lure of head brewer and Key West soon brought his talents to Waterfront Brewery. He has a hand in everything beer-related at Waterfront —recipe design, cellar work, lab work and tending eight to nine 500-gallon batches of special brew. He even has a 15-gallon tank for unique flavors. When brewing, Stine goes for a balance that is “hoppy but still drinkable.” His preferred tastes are Belgium farmhouse ales or a pilsner. But he likes to use local flavors, such as Key Lime and locally harvested honey, to create original beers.
Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. – unknown
KEY WEST Bone Island Brewing Company Cole Mayer, Brewer Mayer got into brewing five years ago, inspired by partner Jim Brady while at the first Key West Brewfest. Now Mayer and Brady are brewing together at the Bone Island Brewing Company — which Mayer likens to the best of “Old School and New School” brewing. They have developed 20 different styles and beers to date. Mayer is big fan of specialty beers like their Stout made with chocolate and caramel hops, or their Sauer Watermelon Berliner Weisse. He describes his taste as “classic styles with innovative flavor” like his Calusa Pale Ale that would be noted as “light and citrusy.” Mayer infuses local flavors like grapefruit, tangerine and mango into his creations.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I have been in several activities at KWHS, but the ones that standout are Be The Change and Peer Mentoring because they both taught me that helping people is important. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Archer, coincidently they’re both English teachers! They both taught me how to construct a well written essay and most importantly how to believe in myself. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? My favorite social media is Instagram because you can see, meet and connect with people. I follow various artists and stylists, like Rihanna. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? My biggest challenge is the culture and size. Living down here, I am different and standout through my clothes. Also, we don’t have opportunities like others because we aren’t widely known. I do this by attempting to put myself out in the world and be involved. What are your plans after high school? My plans after high school are to move out of Florida, preferably to New York and get my masters in visual communications and fashion editorials, event planning, business, although this might change. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No, the Keys will not be my permanent home. I will feel more at home in a metropolitan area. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to accept and appreciate my culture.

here was a time, not too long ago, when jazz music was a booming genre in Key West. The soulful form of music prides itself on improvisation, skill and inherent musical talent. In the last century, musicians were drawn to Key West for its variety of clubs open to alternative venues. Now, 25 years later, jazz has almost disappeared from our local scene despite its deep-rooted history. Key West’s jazz history dates back to the 1940s when Bahama Village native Fats Navarro, trumpeter, became nationally famous playing with legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Charley Parker. Other Key West legends would include Lofton “Coffee” Butler, a piano great or Danny Knowles, a trumpeter, a.k.a Captain Hornblower of Captain Hornblower's Jazz Club. The ‘90s saw the heyday of Key West jazz culture when almost a dozen places supported jazz players such as Top of La Concha, Pier House, Casa Marina, Hukilau, Howie’s Lounge, RALPH De PALMA/rwdepalma.com 1. Keeping Jazz Alive
The Little Room Jazz Club carries on tradition
Virgilios, Captain Hornblower's Jazz Club to name a few. But tourist dollars became mightier than the music, and jazz began to lose its place. Larry Smith, local Jazz musician attributes it to no cover charge. “We are alcohol salesmen disguised as musicians.” Without the set pay, musicians lose the ability to be creative and explorative, the essence of jazz, and we start to focus too much on catering to the audience to draw crowds. The last venue standing is the Little Room Jazz Club, run by Denis Hyland, co-owner, artistic director and musician, who is devoted to jazz and all its variations. Hyland considers jazz a true American art form. “We need to keep the art of song alive. I am trying to keep the

musical experience real. All musicians here play live, no soundtracks, and I encourage creativity, free form as true jazz should be.” Each night Hyland offers a performance dedicated to either a genre or musician associated with jazz; from free form jazz, to blues, and even show tunes. Hyland mixes up the scene giving all jazz form artists a chance to do their thing. The small club with its lowlit intimate setting is reminiscent of when jazz music drew the crowds, not the other way around. With the club’s excellent wine selection and gourmet food, the Little Room Jazz Club isn’t just catering to audiences but to jazz music itself. “The decline of jazz is a very sensitive subject with professional musicians of a certain era. Some jazz guys will not admit or accept its decline in popularity,” said Ralph De Palma, music historian and photographer.

DIVING
KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
2. USS VANDENBERG 24º 27.16’ N, 81º 43.59’ W The USS Vandenberg is an artificial reef and wreck site located seven miles off Key West and has a maximum depth of 140 feet with good visibility. The Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg is 520 feet long and 100 feet tall. Since 2011, once a year, the shipwreck is converted into an underwater art gallery showing the surreal works of Andreas Franke.
1. THUNDERBOLT 24° 39.48’ N, 80° 57.9’ W The Thunderbolt is an artificial reef purposely sunk off Marathon in 1986. It sits in 120 feet of water four miles south of Marathon. Although it was originally christened “Randolf” as a minelayer in 1942, it was acquired by the Florida Power and Light Co. to conduct lightning experiments in the ’60s, thus earning its wreck name. The lunatics at FP&L fired rockets with trailing conductive wires into thunderheads, forcing lightning strikes.

4. NUESTRA SEÑORA DE ATOCHA 35 miles west of Key West It’s an amazing tale. Mel Fisher, his investors and his colleagues recovered $430 million worth of artifacts after a 16-year long search. In order to appease the federales and the investors, they hired archaeologist Duncan Matthews. He was one of the first professionals to ever associate with treasure divers. While the site of this sunken treasure is a matter of public record, it’s off limits to regular recreational divers. However, certified and experienced divers can sign up to dive the expedition as a member of Mel Fisher Expeditions.
3. THE WINDJAMMER 24º 37.41’ N, 82º 56.54’ W Wrecked in 1907 and identified in 1990, The Windjammer was a 261 foot, three-masted sailing vessel carrying lumber when it sank, probably during a storm. It is one of the most popular wreck sites in the Dry Tortugas.

5. THE SANTA MARGARITA 40 miles west of Key West The Atocha gets all the modern day attention, but The Margarita was actually part of a 28-ship flotilla that left Cuba laden with goods collected from all over South America — most notably gold, silver and emeralds. When the fleet went down in 1622, the Spaniards were able to recover about half of the Margarita’s treasure in the ensuing years. They used a brass diving bell and slaves, and the operation was often lethal. Again, divers must be part of a certified Mel Fisher dive in order to explore.
6. JOE'S TUG 24º 27.85’ N, 81º 44.27’ W Joe’s Tug is an artificial reef and wreck site with good visibility and a maximum depth of 65 feet located outside of Key West Harbor. It is an old steel-hull shrimper sunk in 1986. In 1998, Hurricane Georges tore the boat in two, and now the bow and stern rest separated by 30 feet. There is open access to the wheel house and the aft deck and is surrounded by a variety of coral and marine life.
4. THE EAGLE 24º 52.18’ N, 80º 34.21’ W The site is located three and half miles North East of Alligator Reef and six miles off the coast of Lower Matecumbe Key with an average dive depth of 100 feet. The ship has been in that location since the mid-1980s, when it was purposefully sunken. The ship has since broken in half since Hurricane Georges passed through the Keys in 1998. The separate pieces of the ship allow divers to look into the belly of the ship.
7. USS DUANE: 24º 59.38’ N, 80º 22.89’ W She’s a 327-foot cutter built in 1936 and intentionally sank in 1987 near Key Largo. She crests at 50 feet sitting upright at a maximum depth of 125 feet. She served escort duty during the Mariel boatlift, which brought thousands of Cuban Refugees to the Florida Keys in 1980. It boasts varied reef fish and squadrons of great barracuda that patrol the area. This dive is an advanced level dive.

8. USS SPIEGEL GROVE: 25º 04.00’ N, 80º 18.66’ W She was launched in 1956 and intentionally sank in 2001. She is 510 feet long with an 84 feet beam, making her one of the largest artificial reefs in the world. Preparation to reef the ship was $1 million. But for all the best laid plans … the ship sank several hours ahead of schedule on May 17, 2002 ending up upside-down on the sea bottom, leaving her bow protruding out of the ocean and her stern on the ocean floor. A salvage company rolled her onto her starboard side and she remained on her side until Hurricane Dennis came by and stood her upright in July 2005. The Spiegel Grove’s deck is now at 100 feet with the top of the superstructure at 65 feet. It takes approximately six dives to circumnavigate her one time.
9. CAYMAN SALVAGER 24º 27.21’ N, 81º 45.97’ W Cayman Salvager is an artificial reef and wreck site with maximum depth at 90 feet. It is a 187-foot steel-hulled buoy tender built in 1937 and seized during the 1979 Mariel boatlift carrying Cuban refugees. Cleaned for sinking in 1985, it is still considered dangerous to first time or return divers. The location can be subject to strong currents but in the right conditions, it still makes for a rewarding dive. 10. ADOLPHUS BUSCH SR. 24º 31.84’ N, 81º 27.68’ W The Adolphus Busch Sr. was purposely sunk off Big Pine in December of 1999. The waters vary from depths of 60 to 110 feet. The Busch Sr. stands upright and is intact. This famous former freighter had been in use since the ’50s. The site is home to a few Goliath Groupers, one that weighs in excess of 350 pounds.
11. USS WILKES-BARRE 24º 29.09’ N, 81º 33.20’ W The Wilkes-Barre, which fought in World War II and received four battle stars, is an artificial reef in 210 feet of water, and at 608 feet long, it is the longest artificial reef in the Keys. (Spiegel Grove is second longest.) In 1972, it was used for underwater explosive testing, which broke the ship in half where it sank off of Big Pine Key. It is a fun shark fishing spot, and is recommended for experienced deep divers.
Hurricanes frequently change the landscape of the most popular wrecks in the Keys.

‘CALYPSO’ John Denver’s 1975 hit, "Calypso," is a tribute to JacquesYves Cousteau’s research vessel, a French pioneer of SCUBA diving. The song was on the “Windsong,” album and the song reached No. 2 on the charts.
The wetsuit was invented by Hugh Bradner, a physicist at University of California at Berkeley physicist in 1952. He understood that the neoprene suit didn’t need to keep the diver “dry,” just trap water next to the skin that would then heat to body temperature. (The nitrogen bubbles in the neoprene help too.) He also worked on the Manhattan Project. Sales of medallions are sold to offset the costs of sinking the Spiegel Grove.
4.3X FASTER
Sound travels through the water much faster than air — 4.3 times faster. This phenomenon makes it difficult for divers to determine the source of the noise.
1,090 FEET The world record for deepest dive belongs to Egyptian Ahmed Gabr. He dove 1,090 feet deep off the coast of Egypt in 2014. Diver Guy Gurman lost his life in 2015 trying to beat the record off the coast of St. Croix.

ccording to the Monroe County Tourist Development Center, Keys tourism generates $2.7 billion dollars annually. And with 18 shipwrecks listed on its website, fla-keys.com, there is no doubt that diving and snorkeling contributes heftily to that figure. “Monthly, we run one to two trips to the Spiegel Grove or the Duane, mostly the Spiegel Grove though,” said Jason Vogan, a captain at Quiescence Diving Services in Key Largo. He went on to list the wreck dives he’s been on throughout the Keys, but specifically cited the Vandenberg as his favorite due to all of its compartments. “The Thunderbolt is definitely number one, we go there at least once a month right now during the slow season and during peak season, we go at least once a week. It’s a really great wreck, at 80 to 120 feet. There is a lot of marine life, a lot of barracuda and goliath groupers,” said Christina Arnold from Abyss Dive Center in Marathon. — Weekly Staff report
