“For all you do, this Bud’s for you.” “Head for the mountains.” “It’s Miller time!” Yes, we are talking about beer, the deeply favored and flavored love child of grain and hops combined in such a way that it could make monks swoon. From ancient time to present, around the world, people have had a long-standing, devoted love affair with beer. So we asked locals
What was your first beer? What do you drink now?
“Red Dog. I always remember ‘The Dog.’ Now I moved on to vodka, Absolute Raspberry to be exact,” said Katie Hamilton.

POOL POLL: YES
Referendum question results almost evenly split 50-50 SARA MATTHIS
T
sara@keysweekly.com
he Monroe County Supervisor of Elections counted the Marathon pool referendum question twice. The recount, which happened in Key West the day after the election, revealed one more “yes” vote than previously tallied — bringing the total to 865 for the pool, and 861 against. Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin said that any vote that is that close – less than one half of one percent – is immediately subject to an automatic recount, according to state law. One aspect that seems to be poorly understood, according to Marathon Mayor Mark Senmartin, was the very nature of the question. The answer reveals nothing more than public interest in a community pool for Marathon, he said.
“This is a non-binding referendum; this is not a promise that the city is going to build a pool,” he said Wednesday. “This is just the beginning of a conversation.” “At the end of the day, this is a math problem. If, through multiple avenues, we can figure out a way to make this happen, then we should. But if we can’t, there isn’t anybody on the council that wants to hurt the city. If we can’t do it, we wont do it.” Some officials are cautioning the public to not look at the referendum results too closely. “My honest opinion is that it didn’t matter if it was 10 votes for, or 10 votes against. [The results reveal] the city is very interested in a pool. It’s up to us to figure out to fund it, what should be the next step,” said Marathon Councilmember Dan Zieg. He said he’s familiar with the financial details for the Jacobs
Aquatics Center in Key Largo, which he said is subsidized by Monroe County. “We are probably going to have to engage an independent consultant to look at the cost of building a pool and maintenance. We have to examine those costs 15 to 20 years out. I’m willing to keep an open mind.” Steve Cook, a candidate for Marathon City Council, said he’s ready to have that discussion. “I’m all for the conversation,” he said, adding he realizes the importance of adding family-friendly activities in the Middle Keys. One of the biggest components of a possible pool for Marathon is its potential location. The most obvious location is at the former Marathon Manor property located next to the high school, and owned by the Monroe County School District. Marathon Councilman Bill Kelly is planning on bringing forward a motion to formally ask the district to donate the Marathon Manor land to the City of Marathon. Another option on the table for a public pool is a private-public partnership where a developer would be granted the land, in exchange for developing both affordable housing and a public pool. Several Marathon officials said they are in conversations with developers who are seemingly interested in pursuing this option.

“I am going to work on replenishing the campaign funds because I went all in for the primary, even though my supporters told me I was going to win handily. We are in the process of building a larger campaign organization and re-tooling the message. It’s a very difficult challenge, but I have confidence that our strategy will result in victory.”
MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARDMEMBER ELECT MINDY CONN beat Ed ‘Captain Ed’ Davidson to serve District 3:
“I take office in November. By January, I hope to begin holding regular ‘office hours’ before every scheduled board meeting in all areas of the Keys. That way, anyone can feel free to come to me with concerns, or interests, or suggestions. I want to start hearing from the community.”

At presstime, the National Hurricane Center reported that Tropical Storm Hermine was located 135 southwest of Apalachicola. Its expected to make landfall around midnight. Late Mayor Ramsay commemorated Crane Point Memorial Garden grows

he Memorial Garden at Crane Point Hammock gained a notable addition on Aug 30. Late Marathon Mayor Dick Ramsay was commemorated with a plaque, as family and friends came to pay their respects. Since established, the garden is home to more than 30 families of the Marathon and Florida Keys Community. Each area of the Memorial Garden is unique, as Curator Suzie Curry has made it her prerogative to make every section special. Mayor Ramsay’s plaque is located off a small trail, in a serene part of the garden and has a special accent — a “golden” shovel. The shovel signifies his unwavering commitment to breaking ground. “We know Dick turned a lot of soil and has done so much for the community,” said Charlotte Quinn, chief operations officer at Crane Point Museum. The occasion was somber and reflective for those who attended. Sherriff Rick Ramsay shared a few thoughts on his father, commenting that one of the reasons the late mayor cared for the community so much, was because of the way that locals came together in difficult times. On that day, Ramsay’s sentiments couldn’t be truer. — Weekly Staff report
2. “In Loving Memory of Mayor Dick Ramsay,” reads the commemorate plaque. The plaque was proposed by Marathon Councilmember Dan Zieg, who paid for it out of his own pocket. 3. Mike Puto, left, Marathon Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron, Crane Point’s Charlotte Quinn, Marathon Councilman Dan Zieg, Marathon Deputy Manager George Garrett, widow Thea Ramsay, son Sherriff Rick Ramsay, and daughter Laura Gratton honor the late Dick Ramsay.

Coral Shores v. Marathon Hurricanes dominate ‘Fins’ GABRIEL SANCHEZ

he Coral Shores Hurricanes over powered the Marathon Dolphins in a 38-6 victory at home. The teams played out the first half until the game was called due to inclement weather. Nevertheless, coach Alponso Bryant is proud of how the Hurricanes performed in every phase of the game. “We really got a lot of production from our backs, they put up a lot of yards on offense,” said Bryant. Coach Bryant says their quarterback, Juan Pablo Abbrrezco, managed the game well. Coral Shore’s Aiden Hawkins also had a big game, breaking for a 51-yard touchdown and recovering an onside kick. On defense, Cam Cameron intercepted Marathon’s Jackson McDonald deep in Dolphin territory for a touchdown. “Depth in the lineup was a major problem for the Dolphins,” says head coach Anthony Davis of Marathon. After a nose injury to Stevie Sainz, the team had difficulty on both sides of the ball. “Since the preseason, he’s been the catalyst and leader that’s had everyone in line. It was big blow,” said Davis. “They came out driving hard on the line and we had a hard time containing the pressure. We had to switch to a passing attack to adjust, which isn’t necessarily our style of play,” said Davis. The Dolphins anticipated a heavy rushing attack from the Hurricanes, and after an early three and out, felt they could implement their game. The Hurricanes took advantage of poor tackling from Marathon, got in the open field, and the rest was history. Coral Shores looks to continue winning, facing Miami Country Day School Friday, Sept. 2. The Dolphins look to bounce back from the defeat, facing Ransom Everglades School at home on the same day.

S
ept. 1 may be a historic day of change in the country of Venezuela. Opposition to President Nicholas Maduro’s government has planned a day of protest in the capital of Caracas, and is calling for a complete referendum on the administration. The worsening economic situation has sent the country into a tailspin of hyperinflation, crime, and instability.
Consider: • According to the International Monetary Fund, inflation is forecast to hit 480 percent this year and top 1,640 percent in 2017. • The murder rate is hotly contested according to reports published in The Miami Herald. A Venezuelan official put the rate at 58 homicides per 100,000 citizens (that’s more than 18,000 murders), but the Observatory of Venezuelan Violence puts the number at 91 murders per 100,000 citizens. Very murdery, indeed. The economic realities has caused desperation among Venezuelans lacking even the most basic needs. Venezuelans have to stand in line, for hours at times, to shop for food. Citizens are crossing the border illegally to buy food in Colombia. Last month, the country tasked the military with distributing food. Hospitals are having severe shortages of medicine, and sweeping blackouts are turning off life-saving machines. Ex-patriots living in the Keys express hopelessness and frustration. “You can’t send food because you can’t be sure it’s not going to be stolen. We send what we can in terms of basic goods like medicine, hygiene products, and supplies,” said Jose Lera, a Marathon resident of 20 years. “If we can send money, we send smaller amounts. If you send large amounts, you need to justify it to the government and that may put our families in danger.”
COMMUNITY NEWS
MARATHON WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
Both he and his wife, Yeni, have parents and siblings living in Venezuela and say the situation couldn’t be worse. They’ve traveled twice to the Venezuelan embassy in New Orleans to vote for the opposition party, and plan on continuing to do so. They say that it’s their duty to help their people, even from so far away. “The corruption is rampant throughout every level. If you’ve been a part of an opposing group or have signed any sort of referendum in the past, the C.L.A.P (the government agency tasked with distributing foods) often won’t give you food,” said Yeni. Alejandro Acosta, and his brother Eduardo, of Eco Pools Inc. in Marathon, have lived in the United States for more than 20 years. “Before I would send toys and presents for my family. Now its basic items like pampers, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, and a little money,” said Alejandro. “What’s happening there is very sad. We’re working to solve the problems my father-in-law has with receiving medicine and supplies. What saddens me the most is knowing the next generation won’t have the same opportunity that we did.” Eduardo Acosta said he visits the country frequently and has noted the crackdown on citizens’ rights. Eduardo points to officials like former President of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, as one of the corrupt figureheads that seeks to keep the Maduro regime in power. “Along with sending what little money I can, I mobilize every time the opportunity arises to vote. I think their needs to be more collaboration in sending necessary goods,” said Eduardo. “I just got a letter from my niece asking for basic medicine. All we can do is work to help.” There have been others that note the collapse of Venezuela’s economy as not only the result of a political regime, rather a systemic imbalance of economic structure that solely favors petroleum production and its export. (For instance, a drought crippled the oil-rich country in May because the largest electricity plant is run on hydropower.) In times of abundance, these systemic issues were still present they argue. In a recent television appearance, Cabello blamed the opposition and Venezuelan “right” for the spread of misinformation. In defending Maduro’s administration, Cabello repeatedly emphasized Chavez’s long standing themes of a free, sovereign, and independent Venezuela, arguing that the nation has become “... the epicenter of conspiracies from the global right.”
BRIEFLY Bike riders welcome for ReMARCable Ride
Community theater holding auditions
The ReMARCable Tour de Keys, a 100-mile Key Largo to Key West bike ride, is set for Saturday, Sept. 24. The ride can be relayed, with the 100 miles split among team members. Along with the registration fee, each rider is asked to raise at least $100 in pledges to be donated to MARC. Stops are planned at approximately 10-mile intervals on the way down the Overseas Highway and a finish line party at the Westin Key West Resort & Marina. Registration fee is $80 per person through Sept. 12. To register, visit raceroster.com/ events/2016/8899/the-remarcabletour-de-keys.

he Florida Department of Health in Monroe County immunizes Keys kids. Up and down the Keys, kids ages two months up to 18-years-old can receive free vaccinations to fulfill Florida school immunization requirements. It’s free for kids, regardless of financial background. If they’re insured, then the county will bill the insurance. If not, then it’s free. Immunizations are costly, and public, private, as well as most charter schools require a steady regimen of vaccinations upon registering kids for the academic school year. Monroe County offers help. Mary Turner, nursing director, champions the program. “Statistically we do a lot better with immunizations than a lot of other counties.” She attributes its success to people’s willingness to vaccinate their children, its free cost, the easy access and dedicated pediatricians who promote and supplement the program. Vaccinations offered are TDap, Hepatitis B, Polio, Measles-Mump-Rubella, and Varicella. Also available for young adults up to age 19, is the HPV vaccine, which could eradicate cervical cancer and cancers associated with the throat and mouth. The HPV vaccination requires three doses and can be very expensive in the private sector. Flu shots are also available. Flu shots are also available at local pharmacies offering vaccination services. Walgreens and CVS both conduct its respective immunization services. “It’s really important to get the shot as soon as possible,” said Pharmacist Aisha Oliver of CVS in Tavernier. “We’re happy to offer these services, no appointment or prescription needed.” “Walgreens is here to protect as many people as possible with vaccinations. Almost all insurances cover the full cost of flu vaccinations. We have fantastic pharmacists readily available for vaccinations throughout the Keys,” said Walgreens Manager Buddy Baron of the store near Publix in Marathon. Both drug stores recommend consulting with a healthcare professional before being vaccinated. To learn more about vaccines go to www.immunizeflorida.org, a user friendly site to answer questions or www.cdc.gov. The Health Department offers shots at three locations in the Keys: the Roth Building in Tavernier (305-853-7400), Ruth Ivins Center in Marathon (305-289-2708), and the Gato Building in Key West (305-293-7500). —Gabriel Sanchez contributed to this report.

Virtual Sale-ing on the Marathon Yard Sale Page HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
T
wo years ago, when Debra Wonderlin wanted a few bargains while redecorating her home, the Key West Yard Sale Page (KWYS) was the new hot Facebook page. But journeying one hour from Marathon to Key West for a sale item got tedious and Wonderlin quickly realized, “We can do this in Marathon.” Wonderlin was right and now the creator and administrator of the Marathon Yard Sale page (MYS) has 4,000-plus members. Virtual “yard-sale-ing” has become the hottest trend in the Keys since happy hour. It makes Craig’s list obsolete and actual yard sales … why bother? The MYS and KWYS pages allow members of the community to join if they share mutual Keys Facebook friends. If not, Wonderlin will vet any membership request in order to determine if they live in the Keys, not Indonesia or Thailand, and they won’t spam the other members. Both sites adhere to a play nice policy. Wonderlin is adamant, “I have no tolerance for nastiness.” She will block any member who makes inflammatory remarks but there have only been a handful of instances. Usually Wonderlin takes the time to personally message the member to resolve any issues. One main issue — when sellers go against their promise to a buyer when lured by a higher offer. The KWYS, at 21,000 plus members has a lot more traffic and opportunity for dispute. Ed Johnston, owner of Signs Unlimited and site’s creator, and Audrey Samz, administrator, are the two unpaid individuals monitoring KWYS. They hourly police activity, block negative comments or members for bad behavior and review the 100 requests a day for membership. For the most part, both pages garner overwhelming community support and camaraderie. The sights are the “it” place to find deals, check the traffic reports and advertise local businesses and events. The MYS even became the community update page on local homeless man, Bill, frequently sighted near Publix. When he was found on the 18 Mile Stretch, locals posted his whereabouts and helped him to return to Marathon. “I’ve made some great contacts, met really nice people, made new friends,” said Wonderlin a 31-year resident of the Keys. “And someone wanted my picture once; I felt like a celebrity.” While she is the only administrator, Wonderlin has yet to find the task overwhelming or unfulfilling. Like an ambassador of good bargain hunting, Wonderlin plans on keeping the page serving the community.
When asked what Debra Wonderlin’s best bargain was on MYS, “My roomba, I love my roomba.”
A DEEP BLUE DIVE CENTER A Deep Blue Dive Center Corporation is a full service snorkel and scuba facility, established in 2003, in Key Colony Beach that offers trips, instruction, rentals, sales and air fills. “We want to show you the beauty of the sea in the Florida Keys,” said President, Jeff Neidlinger, who added that his staff is their key to success. A Deep Blue Dive offers snorkel and scuba instruction, and “Dive in One Day” so that customers can experience being underwater in one day. They are also available for island tours, sunset cruises and private charters, and rent kayaks and paddleboards. “We offer great service and quality products,” he said. A Deep Blue Dive Center provides the boat and crew for a reef cleanup twice a year as part of World Ocean Day and International Coastal Cleanup. evin Chicosky recommends the Monkey Fist. It goes particularly well, he said, with the pot roast sandwich. Chicosky works as a server at Overseas Pub and Grill in Marathon. The multi-roomed restaurant and bar has nooks and crannies suitable for all gatherings — dinner for the family inside by the windows, drinks with friends outside, games with buddies in the arcade. Chicosky describes Monkey Fist as a “double IPA.” Its brewed by Shipyard Brewing Co. in Maine and comes in a bottle at Overseas. “It’s extra hoppy,” he said. When he’s not serving, Chicosky operates Natural Path Paddle Adventures. He takes guests on kayak and paddle tours and said his favorite spot is the mangrove trails in Boot Key Harbor. A native of upstate New York, Chicosky has lived in the Keys for 20 years. “I love everything about this place: the water, the ocean, anything to do outside.” Overseas Pub and Grill is in the center of Marathon near 35th Street.

arpon Creek Bar and Grill, located behind the Holiday Inn Express in Marathon, just launched a new happy hour menu with longer hours, and a full menu with lower prices, to thank locals for their support over the years. “We now have the latest running happy hour in Marathon,” said Catering and Marketing Manager Ashley Keeney, citing the new hours from 4 to 7 p.m. “We wanted to make it so people can actually come out and enjoy the evening after work and still be able to get some great deals.” The new happy hour menu includes $5 tapas style appetizers like the ever-popular Cuban rice balls, and other favorites like conch fritters, chicken wings, buffalo shrimp, calamari, and filet mignon sliders. The drink pricing is a 3-4-5 menu. Three dollars for domestic bottles of beer and house wine, $4 for import beers and house liquor, and $5 for craft draught beer on tap. “The food is great, but the ambiance is the best in town,” she said. “The high tiki is always cool even on hot summer days, and the view can’t be beat.” The happy hour pricing can be found throughout the restaurant, not just at the bar, and they are up for a Best of Marathon Award for already having a great happy hour, and of course the best wood fire pizzas on the island.

THE ARTS
Local filmmakers have a weekend to make a short film SARA MATTHIS
I
sara@keysweekly.com
n mid-August, local teams had 72 hours to write, shoot and edit a complete short film with very specific parameters. The showcase — there’s no winners and no losers — attracts a mish mash of folks ranging from creative types to real estate nerds. The filmmakers, actors, production assistants and general dogsbodies converge on a Thursday to learn the details of their assignments. In 2016: Use a mango as a prop; have a character named Frances/Francis Eaton, and a character employed as a grocery bagger; and use the line: “Don’t look at me.” (By making those specific requirements, contest organizers ensure there’s no cheating, or “pre-production work.”) Then they have Friday, Saturday and Sunday to script, film and edit the piece that must be turned in on Monday.

MARATHON WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
“What I love best about it is the sense of community and the collaboration that goes on,” said Juliet Gray, who co-directs the 72 Hour Film Challenge with Michael Marrero. “Because of iPhones and smartphones we all now have the ability to shoot video. This event encourages people to make a film and gives them a deadline to do it by.” This year about 20 local teams accepted the challenge. Gray said the collaborators come from all walks of life — some experienced filmmakers, others complete amateurs. Ditto the actors ranging from age 8 to those eligible for Medicare. “This is actually my second year,” said Jon Cannell, who recently returned to the Keys after a hiatus and was immediately sucked into the Key West arts scene. Last year, he drew the “film noir” category and produced a film called “The Lovelies.” “This year’s effort … well, we feel it’s a step up,” Cannell said. Many of the competitors are being a little cagey about revealing details of the films. They want to gauge the audience’s honest reaction when the films screen on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 7-8 at Tropic Cinema. “There is no better feeling than sitting in a movie theater and watching your movie on the big screen while eating popcorn,” said filmmaker Josh Mothner, a Middle Keys resident, real estate expert and political consultant. When asked for a synopsis of his film, Mothner responded, “Let’s just say it’s the apocalyptic result of a disastrous, national election.” Of course.

The Day the Music Died II A win-win solution is still within reach
A
recent letter to the editor writer took me to task for my recent column about the end of live music at the Sunset Grille. This individual called me “disingenuous” for reporting that all live music has ended at the Sunset Grille and that musicians who formerly worked there were out of those jobs. The crux of the matter is the phrase “no amplified music.” These three words, mistakenly inserted into the development agreement with the City, were not part of the original deed restriction that the Chaplins and the Knight’s Key residents’ representatives signed. While the original deed restrictions permitted and acknowledged that live entertainment could take place until 9p.m., those three words — “no amplified music” — are the problem. If there is one thing I’m really familiar with, it’s performing live music. That has been my “day job” for more than 35 years. Unless one performs with a symphony orchestra, a concert or marching band, or a drum circle — all of which would be quite loud and quite legal at the Sunset Grille — virtually all live music requires some sort of amplification. The Radio Margaritaville music that plays in the background at Sunset Grille is technically amplified music. No amplified music equals no live music. Musicians lost jobs. JOHN That is a fact. BARTUS The solution presented to the Council on August 9 — recommended by the City’s planning staff and is a City Council Planning Commission — would have resolved the member and a conflict between the original deed restrictions and the former Mayor of development agreement. It would have provided adthe City of Marathon. John is also ditional protections for the residents of Knight’s Key a musician who and allowed live music to continue with the provisions performs around established under the original deed restrictions and town at various effectively enforced by the City’s Code Department. establishments. When Council members Michelle Coldiron and Dan Zieg voted against the recommendations of planning staff and the Planning Commission, it meant the three-word phrase “no amplified music” remained in the development agreement. I didn’t vote on the issue because I recused myself on the basis that I had a business relationship with the Sunset Grille that included playing occasional shows there. Sadly, that 2-2 stalemate resulted in musicians being put out of work. That is a fact. Before I stepped down from the dais that night, I pleaded with my fellow Council members and people in attendance to try and find a win-win solution that both protected the Knight’s Key residents and addressed the parking and noise problems. Sadly, that was not to be that night. The parking situation will only get worse in the future with the completion of the Seven Mile Bridge projects and the development of a 200-unit destination resort on the campground. A solution is possible that allows parking on the neighboring lots owned by the Sunset Grille, and that includes landscaping and buffering requirements without needing a zoning change. This could further isolate the Sunset Grille from its neighbors while solving a parking problem that will only worsen with time. And the development agreement needs to be fixed so that it mirrors the language in the original deed restrictions. If, however, reaching realistic and enforceable solutions comes in a distant second to the desire for punitive action and neighborhood discord, then we all lose. In closing, the letter-writer suggested that I owe people an apology. I strongly disagree with the votes of two of my fellow Council members on this issue. If a person is going to serve as an elected official, that person needs to own and be proud of the votes they cast. I am proud of having done the right thing by not voting on the issue, and I owe nobody an apology. John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Fridays at Florida Keys Country Club, Saturdays at the Key Colony Inn, and this Sunday at Lorelei. www.johnbartus.com

SHIPWRECKS
MARATHON WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
2. USS VANDENBERG 24º 27.16’ N, 81º 43.59’ W The USS Vandenberg is an artificial reef and wreck site located seven miles off Key West and has a maximum depth of 140 feet with good visibility. The Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg is 520 feet long and 100 feet tall. Since 2011, once a year, the shipwreck is converted into an underwater art gallery showing the surreal works of Andreas Franke.
1. THUNDERBOLT 24° 39.48’ N, 80° 57.9’ W The Thunderbolt is an artificial reef purposely sunk off Marathon in 1986. It sits in 120 feet of water four miles south of Marathon. Although it was originally christened “Randolf” as a minelayer in 1942, it was acquired by the Florida Power and Light Co. to conduct lightning experiments in the ’60s, thus earning its wreck name. The lunatics at FP&L fired rockets with trailing conductive wires into thunderheads, forcing lightning strikes.

4. NUESTRA SEÑORA DE ATOCHA 35 miles west of Key West It’s an amazing tale. Mel Fisher, his investors and his colleagues recovered $430 million worth of artifacts after a 16-year long search. In order to appease the federales and the investors, they hired archaeologist Duncan Matthews. He was one of the first professionals to ever associate with treasure divers. While the site of this sunken treasure is a matter of public record, it’s off limits to regular recreational divers. However, certified and experienced divers can sign up to dive the expedition as a member of Mel Fisher Expeditions.
3. THE WINDJAMMER 24º 37.41’ N, 82º 56.54’ W Wrecked in 1907 and identified in 1990, The Windjammer was a 261 foot, three-masted sailing vessel carrying lumber when it sank, probably during a storm. It is one of the most popular wreck sites in the Dry Tortugas.

5. THE SANTA MARGARITA 40 miles west of Key West The Atocha gets all the modern day attention, but The Margarita was actually part of a 28-ship flotilla that left Cuba laden with goods collected from all over South America — most notably gold, silver and emeralds. When the fleet went down in 1622, the Spaniards were able to recover about half of the Margarita’s treasure in the ensuing years. They used a brass diving bell and slaves, and the operation was often lethal. Again, divers must be part of a certified Mel Fisher dive in order to explore.
6. JOE'S TUG 24º 27.85’ N, 81º 44.27’ W Joe’s Tug is an artificial reef and wreck site with good visibility and a maximum depth of 65 feet located outside of Key West Harbor. It is an old steel-hull shrimper sunk in 1986. In 1998, Hurricane Georges tore the boat in two, and now the bow and stern rest separated by 30 feet. There is open access to the wheel house and the aft deck and is surrounded by a variety of coral and marine life.
12. COFFIN’S PATCH, MARATHON: Coffin’s patch is a protect National Marine Sanctuary located roughly four miles off of Key Colony Beach and has waters that vary from 8 to 20 feet. This patch of beautiful reef is home to local nurse shark “Nessy” and three large sea turtles that have become local celebrities. It’s named after a barge loaded with coffins that sank on the spot.
7. USS DUANE: 24º 59.38’ N, 80º 22.89’ W She’s a 327-foot cutter built in 1936 and intentionally sank in 1987 near Key Largo. She crests at 50 feet sitting upright at a maximum depth of 125 feet. She served escort duty during the Mariel boatlift, which brought thousands of Cuban Refugees to the Florida Keys in 1980. It boasts varied reef fish and squadrons of great barracuda that patrol the area. This dive is an advanced level dive.

8. USS SPIEGEL GROVE: 25º 04.00’ N, 80º 18.66’ W She was launched in 1956 and intentionally sank in 2001. She is 510 feet long with an 84 feet beam, making her one of the largest artificial reefs in the world. Preparation to reef the ship was $1 million. But for all the best laid plans … the ship sank several hours ahead of schedule on May 17, 2002 ending up upside-down on the sea bottom, leaving her bow protruding out of the ocean and her stern on the ocean floor. A salvage company rolled her onto her starboard side and she remained on her side until Hurricane Dennis came by and stood her upright in July 2005. The Spiegel Grove’s deck is now at 100 feet with the top of the superstructure at 65 feet. It takes approximately six dives to circumnavigate her one time.
9. CAYMAN SALVAGER 24º 27.21’ N, 81º 45.97’ W Cayman Salvager is an artificial reef and wreck site with maximum depth at 90 feet. It is a 187-foot steel-hulled buoy tender built in 1937 and seized during the 1979 Mariel boatlift carrying Cuban refugees. Cleaned for sinking in 1985, it is still considered dangerous to first time or return divers. The location can be subject to strong currents but in the right conditions, it still makes for a rewarding dive. 10. ADOLPHUS BUSCH SR. 24º 31.84’ N, 81º 27.68’ W The Adolphus Busch Sr. was purposely sunk off Big Pine in December of 1999. The waters vary from depths of 60 to 110 feet. The Busch Sr. stands upright and is intact. This famous former freighter had been in use since the ’50s. The site is home to a few Goliath Groupers, one that weighs in excess of 350 pounds.
11. USS WILKES-BARRE 24º 29.09’ N, 81º 33.20’ W The Wilkes-Barre, which fought in World War II and received four battle stars, is an artificial reef in 210 feet of water, and at 608 feet long, it is the longest artificial reef in the Keys. (Spiegel Grove is second longest.) In 1972, it was used for underwater explosive testing, which broke the ship in half where it sank off of Big Pine Key. It is a fun shark fishing spot, and is recommended for experienced deep divers.
Hurricanes frequently change the landscape of the most popular wrecks in the Keys.

‘CALYPSO’ John Denver’s 1975 hit, "Calypso," is a tribute to JacquesYves Cousteau’s research vessel, a French pioneer of SCUBA diving. The song was on the “Windsong,” album and the song reached No. 2 on the charts.
The wetsuit was invented by Hugh Bradner, a physicist at University of California at Berkeley physicist in 1952. He understood that the neoprene suit didn’t need to keep the diver “dry,” just trap water next to the skin that would then heat to body temperature. (The nitrogen bubbles in the neoprene help too.) He also worked on the Manhattan Project. Sales of medallions are sold to offset the costs of sinking the Spiegel Grove.
4.3X FASTER
Sound travels through the water much faster than air — 4.3 times faster. This phenomenon makes it difficult for divers to determine the source of the noise.
1,090 FEET The world record for deepest dive belongs to Egyptian Ahmed Gabr. He dove 1,090 feet deep off the coast of Egypt in 2014. Diver Guy Gurman lost his life in 2015 trying to beat the record off the coast of St. Croix.

ccording to the Monroe County Tourist Development Center, Keys tourism generates $2.7 billion dollars annually. And with 18 shipwrecks listed on its website, fla-keys.com, there is no doubt that diving and snorkeling contributes heftily to that figure. “Monthly, we run one to two trips to the Spiegel Grove or the Duane, mostly the Spiegel Grove though,” said Jason Vogan, a captain at Quiescence Diving Services in Key Largo. He went on to list the wreck dives he’s been on throughout the Keys, but specifically cited the Vandenberg as his favorite due to all of its compartments. “The Thunderbolt is definitely number one, we go there at least once a month right now during the slow season and during peak season, we go at least once a week. It’s a really great wreck, at 80 to 120 feet. There is a lot of marine life, a lot of barracuda and goliath groupers,” said Christina Arnold from Abyss Dive Center in Marathon. — Weekly Staff report

THIS WEEKEND
MARATHON WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 02, 2016
B
rewing beer isn’t easy. It takes science, skill and, foremost, taste. Usually, brewers start with the gateway hobby — “at home brewing.” And when that works out (meaning their spouses and friends happily drink all of it), they head out to find other like-minded brewers with more room, more equipment and a larger audience. Thus a brewer and a local brewery is born. The Keys are a
happy home to several local breweries equipped with talented local brewers who refine their craft, experiment with flavor and give locals and tourists a taste of, well, their own brew. Look for these guys this weekend during the seventh annual Key West Brewfest. For the complete schedule of events, visit keywestbrewfest.com.
By Hays Blinckmann & Gabriel Sanchez ISLAMORADA Florida Keys Brewing Co. Craig McBay, Head Brewer A home brewing kit from Mom became the beginning of McBay’s brewing journey. Six years removed from brewing at home, McBay has led the Florida Keys Brewing Co. to countywide distribution, no small feat for an independent brewer. His beers cover every spectrum of ingredient and taste. He believes in attention to detail, extensive research, and fostering a consensus to “brew better beer” every day. Personally, though, McBay enjoys a citrusy hoppy taste, and uses local fruits — such as Key Limes and mangos — to achieve the right balance. He also enjoys the “roast-y-ness” that only high quality coffee beans can create. Rest assured he’s only just begun.
KEY WEST The Waterfront Brewery Justin Stine, Head Brewer Stine spent six years brewing at home before going pro at Cigar City Brewing in Tampa. The lure of head brewer and Key West soon brought his talents to Waterfront Brewery. He has a hand in everything beer-related at Waterfront —recipe design, cellar work, lab work and tending eight to nine 500-gallon batches of special brew. He even has a 15-gallon tank for unique flavors. When brewing, Stine goes for a balance that is “hoppy but still drinkable.” His preferred tastes are Belgium farmhouse ales or a pilsner. But he likes to use local flavors, such as Key Lime and locally harvested honey, to create original beers.
Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. – unknown
KEY WEST Bone Island Brewing Company Cole Mayer, Brewer Mayer got into brewing five years ago, inspired by partner Jim Brady while at the first Key West Brewfest. Now Mayer and Brady are brewing together at the Bone Island Brewing Company — which Mayer likens to the best of “Old School and New School” brewing. They have developed 20 different styles and beers to date. Mayer is big fan of specialty beers like their Stout made with chocolate and caramel hops, or their Sauer Watermelon Berliner Weisse. He describes his taste as “classic styles with innovative flavor” like his Calusa Pale Ale that would be noted as “light and citrusy.” Mayer infuses local flavors like grapefruit, tangerine and mango into his creations.
