Key Colony Beach to Domestic city administrator Abuse Shelter hire Puto and Schraffenberger Middle Keys shelter closed for renovations

he Domestic Abuse Shelter, (DAS) has reopened its 21-bed emergency shelter in the Lower Keys since being temporarily suspended by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) back in May. It has also temporarily closed the Middle Keys 38-bed facility for renovations. The arrangements came after an agreement reached by DAS, the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, (FCADV) and Victim Response. “Our first priority continues to be for survivors of domestic violence and their children,” said Jennifer Powell, president of the board of the DAS. “These newly forged partnerships provide additional resources and critical life-saving services to anyone seeking safety from abuse throughout the Keys. We are working hard to retool.” Since May, the Keys shelter has been operated by The Lodge, a Miami-Dade based agency, one of 42 state-certified domestic abuse shelters. The Lodge took over operations in order to provide Keys victims of abuse a safe haven. “When the Middle Keys shelter closed for renovations, our existing clients had the option to go to Key West or resettle at either another mainland shelter or find a private situation,” said Powell. “We do not have a target date to re-open the Marathon shelter.” The Key West shelter facility is owned by the city housing authority. The DAS recently undertook some routine maintenance and deep cleaning of the facility. DAS is awaiting some final contractor quotes before beginning renovations on the Key West shelter, including installing a handicap ramp and an ADA-compliant bathroom. In May, when the DAS’ license was suspended, the DCF noted it was taking the “least restrictive” option available and gave the DAS six months — until early November — to take corrective action. The DCF report also said, “it must also demonstrate the willingness and capability to change its management and operations …”

are early applicants By Sara Mathis & Jason Koler On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the tiny city of City of Key Colony Beach is taking a giant step: hiring their first dedicated city administrator at a special call meeting. Currently, there are only two candidates vying for the job — former Marathon City Manager Mike Puto and former Key Colony Beach Commissioner Ryan Schraffenberger. Both applicants were present at this past Thursday’s Commissioner meeting when Mayor Jerry Ellis proposed hiring Puto on the spot. “This would be a great job for him,” said Ellis. “I didn’t dream he would do it. But he lives here and would do a great job.” His motion was met with opposition. “I was taken by surprise,” said Commissioner John DeNeale. “I am going to do my homework. I am not going to guarantee that I will even vote on Wednesday.” Commissioner April Tracy told the Weekly,

“Regardless of who the applicants are there is a hiring process. I look forward to learning more about the applicants followed by a discussion with my fellow commissioners to choose the best possible candidate for our residents.” In previous years, the administration of the city was handled by the mayor, which is decided at the first organizational meeting after an election. For his or her trouble, the mayor earned an extra $2,000 over the commissioner’s regular $8,000 annual salary. The city has already budgeted $60,000 for what’s described as a parttime position. “Its isn’t really a new position,” says KCB Mayor Jerry Ellis. “It has been here forever. I was just something that was not played up very much.” “I wouldn’t mind stepping up and working hard and having some fun,” said Puto. “I’m definitely well qualified and it would be a pleasure to serve as their administrator. I have the time and connections to do a good job for the city.” “I want to do something for my city and my organizational skills would serve the residents well,” said Schraffenberger. “Key Colony Beach needs to upgrade their computer systems and start working towards a paperless office.” This summer, during budget workshops, it was noted that the mayor is increasingly dealing with more and more complex matters, resulting in more hours at a city desk. Initially, commissioners sought to put aside a $25,000 stipend for the elected mayor … but that is in violation of Key Colony Beach’s own charter. “Our charter does not allow a commissioner to also have a paid city position,” said City Clerk Kathryn McCullough. She said position is necessary as the elected mayor does not always have the qualifications, or the time, to serve as administrator. “And, because of Florida’s Sunshine Law, commissioners cannot pose administrative questions to the mayor unless it’s at a public meeting.” The city clerk has not been ordered to advertise the position, but will accept applications until Wednesday.

‘Leisure Seeker’ scouting locations in Marathon, Key West

fter hosting auditions in Key West on Sept. 1, and posting Facebook appeals for extras, production scouts are reportedly scouring in the Middle Keys and Key West for locations for the filming of “The Leisure Seeker” starring Donald Sutherland and Helen

Mirren. “A lady came through and said she was looking for locations,” said Mark Matthis, a Marathon business owner. The casting is being handled by Ellen Jacoby Casting, the same company that also worked on “True Lies,” which famously features the Seven Mile Bridge. She said the filming will be in Key West on Sept. 13-14 (including The Hemingway House) and in Lower and Middle Keys on Sept. 15-16. The movie is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Michael Zadoorian. It features the madcap adventure of an elderly couple who “kidnap themselves” for a final adventure — a road trip in a recreational vehicle. In the book, the female lead has cancer and quit treatments; the male lead has Alzheimer’s Disease. Mirren and Southerland will be reuniting after sharing the screen in 1990 in the movie, “Bethune: The Making of a Hero.” The movie is being produced by European companies The Indiana Production, BAC Films and Rai Cinema. The production plan always called for the Keys locales, but the movie was recently rained out by Hurricane Hermine in Georgia. "Although the Marathon locations may be attributed to Key West in the movie for storyline purposes, it’s still good publicity for Marathon and the Keys overall,” said Daniel Samess, chief executive officer of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce. “There is some economic benefit, whether its taxes or visual recognition. And it’s a positive-comedic movie which I’m happy to have associated with the Keys."

As a critical care paramedic, RAMON DELACRUZ said it was something he always wanted to do as a kid. With two years under his belt at Station Marathon, he said he’s helped save people when they were sick. “Knowing you can make a difference in a person’s life is what makes it worthwhile,” he said. He was in music class in ninth grade when the twin towers were attacked. “The first responders gave their lives to the people,” he said. “They showed so much bravery and made me want to give more of myself.”

Raised in Marathon, GILBERT WOOD was sitting at the old Sombrero Texaco gas station in 2001 when the twin towers were attacked. He has been a volunteer at Marathon’s fire department since 2008. “Whenever I’m not working, I’m here,” he said. Wood also works at The Home Depot in Marathon, is a property manager at 100 Street Center, and a deacon and usher at a local church. “I’ve always loved helping others when I can. I have always been service-oriented.”

MIKE CARD, who was one of the first hired at the Marathon department, is on his “second tour” at the firehouse. “I love this community, and this is the best way to give back,” he said. A graduate of Marathon High School Class of 1979, he started volunteering at the Conch Key station as a senior in high school and was in total shock when sitting at the station in 2001 when the terror attacks happened. “We were sitting here watching it,” he said. “It was so surreal.”

In the islands, we are fortunate to have a dedicated set of professionals who serve faithfully and honorably. Thanks to all, for their service.

ANDREA THOMPSON moved to the Keys in 1999 and has been a firefighter for Monroe County for 15 years and the two years prior was a volunteer at Conch Key. “I went into EMT and paramedic side because of my grandmother,” she said. “And, I am a tomboy and like challenges.” She was working at Conch Key Fire Station during 9/11 and was on duty. “I was in shock,” she said. She’s married to Battalion Chief Mark Thompson, who has been with Monroe County Fire Rescue for 20 years. She hopes her children will follow in her footsteps.

The City of Marathon recently graduated 10 new paramedics. An assortment of city officials and first responders came out to celebrate with a partial group of graduates (those holding the plaques). They are Captain Thompson, Lieutenant Bertini, Chief Callahan, Deputy Chief Boswell, Instructor Bruce Hill, Firefighter Horachek, Deputy Chief Hudson, Lieutenant Martinez, Training Chief Mather, and Battalion Chief Thompson. • The Kirk of the Keys Church in Marathon, in cooperation with the City of Marathon, will be holding a tribute service on at 10 a.m. The public and all first responders are invited, and lunch will be served afterwards. The ceremony will acknowledge 9/11 and honor the heroes who served and serve today.

hances are positive a resident of Key West has either seen a moped, scooter or motorcycle accident … or been in one. During high season, sometimes Key West residents witness up to two a day. Whether it is watching a tourist topple from inexperience or a local weaving too fast on Roosevelt Boulevard, these accidents have become a lifestyle norm in Key West. In order to accurately look at the statistics of moped, scooter and motorcycle accidents, defining each motorized vehicle is key. One of the ways to differentiate between the methods of transportation is speed: • A moped is a single-passenger two-wheeled motorized vehicle with a maximum speed of 31 mph, with engine displacement less than or equal to 50cc, and cannot be driven on a highway. • A scooter can fit up to two passengers with an engine displacement up to 250cc or higher and can reach 60 mph. Traffic studies, like those cited below, put mopeds in a category of their own, but group motorcycle and scooter statistics together. According to crash data compiled by the Key West Police Department, the numbers of moped/scooter accidents, not surprisingly, has been growing from 2014 to 2016. The numbers don’t lie: the total of Key West moped/motorcycle crashes in 2014 was 338,in 2015 it was 382 and in 2016 it has reached 257 which by estimates, should meet or exceed the past year’s numbers with four months left to go in the calendar year. According to the stats, 13 percent resulted in severe or fatal injury in 2014, in 2015 it rose to 20 percent, and in 2016 is already at 14 percent. “We definitely see one serious injury, if not more, a week,” according to Dr. Eric Herrera, an emergency room doctor at Lower Keys Medical Center. “Now I won’t ride a moped or scooter because of what I’ve seen.” Are accidents due to scooters themselves? Inexperienced drivers? Is there an increased chance of disobeying traffic laws because of riding a smaller vehicle? Is it that Key West’s traffic infrastructure does not support scooter safety? There is no clear answer. Regardless, the appeal to tourists and residents hasn’t decreased. Motorized two-wheel transportation is cheap and easy to use. For tourists, they can rent by the hour, day, or week for less than $100 dollars with just a driver license. For locals, it is a fast method of transportation without the hassle of parking or buying insurance for mopeds or scooters that do not exceed 30 mph. A seemingly win-win for both groups, until they find themselves at the hospital, their vacation ruined or their lives and livelihood at stake. hite Zinfandel was the headache-inducing pink wine that set back the American rosé industry for decades. Now rosé’s are fighting the “pink wine” stereotype. They are dryer, rosier and becoming more popular than ever. Why? Thanks to a little continent called Europe, who just seemingly cannot produce bad wine. Countries like Italy, Spain, and the mother of Rosé, France, kept making, drinking and

perfecting rosé until Americans woke up and realized they were missing out. Here’s what is great about rosé — it’s actually dry (NOT syrupy sweet), it goes with everything (meaning its flavor is light and neutral, not “oaky” or “buttery”), and it’s cheap. Yep, no sommeliers needed. Just chill, drink and repeat. And rosé’s are meant to be drunk — they aren’t investments for your kids’ college fund, no aging or de-corking or sniffing or spitting; just drinking. “I would say rosé was being written about, produced domestically, imported and consumed in culinary hotspots like Miami, New York and San Francisco for the past five years,” said Stephanie Southgate, fine wine consultant for Noble Wine Estates, a division of Breakthru Beverage. “I did see a distinct increase in the popularity of rosé in the Keys about two years ago. Certainly the most popular profile seems to be the dry and zesty style from the South of France.”

Here’s rosé 101: Rosé is made by the maceration method, where grape skin is left to sit and stain the wine for a few hours or the Saignée (“San-yay”) method when some red wine juice is bled off and put into a new vat to make rosé. Red and white wines can be blended but that is uncommon, and not encouraged. The primary flavors of rosé wine are various red fruits, flowers, and citrus. “There’s been a renewed popularity in rosés,” said Karen Trujillo, a sales rep for Southern Wine & Spirits for the past 15 years. “A year ago, it wasn’t easy to sell. Now all the restaurants are asking for them because their customers — men and women — are asking for them.” Trujillo said her favorites are Le Caprice de Clementine (served at Alma at Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, and Oltremare at Amara Cay Resort in Islamorada) and Mionetto’s Prosecco Brut Rose, a sparkling rosé (served at Florida Keys Country Club in Marathon, and Bumby’s and The Islander Resort, both in Islamorada). Marathon Liquors recently added new French rosés to the inventory: Chateau La Gordonne (Cotes de Provence), Billete Provance, Pink Flamingo, and Listel Grain de Gris. “I served the Mionetto Brut Rosé at my birthday party,” Trujillo said.

he Fuego Mas Grande — tequila-based cocktail — is for those that want the happy hour experience, without all the sugary sweetness. According to the cocktail menu, the longer it sits, the hotter it gets. And with a happy hour lasting from 4 to 7 p.m., that’s pretty hot. Bartender Gary Steinbrugge said it’s a balanced concoction of lime juice with jalapeño and habanero peppers with a little bit of sour mix, too. It pairs perfectly with some of the happy hour specials on the reverse side of the specialty cocktail menu — chips and salsa, chicken fingers, wings and sliders with prices ranging from $3 to about $10. The other drinks are great value, too. Well drinks cost $3.50, draft beers are a buck and a quarter, house wines are $4 by the glass and bottled beer (think Stella, St. Pauli and Michelob Ultra) are usually about $3 or $4. Steinbrugge is a Fort Myers native, and moved to the Keys three years ago, giving up a career as a commercial shrimper. He’s been at Lulu’s for two years, and when he’s not behind the bar he’s exploring the Keys environs — snorkeling, beaching and spending his fair share of time at this and other tiki bars. Surfing in the Keys

It happens! Just not often.

Surfing in the Keys? It doesn’t really happen that often, but when it does, it’s epic — and usually nowhere near a beach. “It’s not like there is a surf report to go off of,” said SpearCrazy Charter Capt. James Simcic. “You literally have to ride out there and burn fuel just to check it out.” He has his tricks though, like bi-plane pilot and friend Evan Doumis of Overseas Aero Tours, who will call him if the waves look good. Simcic — with three friends, Andrew “Ace” Hunt, Kevin Johnsen, and John Strama — spent the past week tracking down the waves at Sombrero Lighthouse aboard Florida Keys Reel Adventures boat for a day of surfing. “They were short rides, but it was worth it,” Simcic said of the waves generated by the storm Hermine as it passed the Keys. He’s surfed Sombrero probably 20 times in the past six years, following in his dad’s board wake from the ’80s. After moving to the east coast of Florida for college, Simcic needed something to quench his salt taste for spearfishing and picked up surfing. But, when he moved back to the Keys, there was nowhere to practice his new sport, except for when tropical storms pass offshore, or cold fronts bring up ground swells. “It’s so fickle, you need to know what to look for,” he said. “You have to know where to paddle.” He usually buddy surfs with friends, since they are five miles out to sea. His friend, Ace, basically learned to surf on the reef rather than beachside. “He just needed to learn how to read the waves, he was athletic already,” said Simcic. The crew is looking forward to some winter cold fronts to brew up some more waves to ride.

Music festival drawing big names to support military veterans

n Feb. 18, 2017, Marathon will be home to the first annual Coral Head Music Festival. The festival will feature seven bands, including longtime popular southern rock bands Molly Hatchet and Georgia Satellites. The concert will be held at Marathon Community Park’s amphitheater. “Molly Hatchet is known for being a big support of veterans, we’re happy to have them in the lineup,” said Rich Anderson of the American Legion Riders Chapter 154 in Marathon. “We have bands coming from Homestead and Miami. It’ll be like a full eighties’ rock show, they play everything from Van Halen to Iron Maiden.” The all-day festival will have booths for vendors, food and drink stations, and organizers are hoping for attendance ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 guests. (For reference, Marathon’s Seafood Festival attracts roughly 20,000 attendees.) The American Legion Riders of Chapter 154 are currently seek-

ing local sponsors and vendors to participate. The festival is a charity event, primarily benefiting Project Vet Relief, an initiative through the State of Florida and American Legion to assist veterans transitioning back into civilian life. The organization also assists the unemployed, homeless, impoverished, and helps veterans obtain benefits access. “We are seeking local sponsorship to help improve the lives of veterans in Florida. Student project may help with coral bleaching

he air temperature Friday was warm, nearing hot, on an early September evening at a picturesque Grassy Key quarry. A tarp lays across a portion of the quarry, with aerators, light meters, thermometers, and dive gear scattered around. It’s the meeting place of the Keys Ocean Rangers (KOR), a group of 17 students, who wrote grants and have put in more than 2,000 hours in the project. They are working several days a week on researching cooling technologies that could one day help corals survive coral bleaching events at local reefs. With help from an Ocean Innovation Award, and donations from Vertex Water Features, Keys Cable Park, and other local companies, the students, ages 9 to 15, have been working to find a solution to harmful UV light, excessive water temperatures, and poor water quality affecting the Florida Keys reef system. The KOR team has found that corals may benefit from a little help during stressful summer months like August and September when temps soar by employing methods of sun shading and water aeriation. “In Ocean Camp, I spent a week learning about coral bleaching and saw it first hand,” said Jack Kramer, 15, and one of the founders of the KOR project. “We found studies in the Great Barrier Reef that used shade and aeriation systems, so we are testing out those aspects here to see if it would work.” In the water, Chloe and Lucy discussed the shade cloth and aeriation systems. “We got the shade cloth from Home Depot, connected it with bungee cords, and have half inch PVC for stability,” said Lucy. They found in their research that

the shade cloth decreased the sunlight by 90 percent in 15 feet of water. “They are an amazing group of local youths who are working very hard to help come up with innovative solutions to address a major issue facing our coral reefs,” said Jack’s mom, Patricia Kramer. “Besides their love for spending time in the water exploring coral reefs, they care deeply and are motivated to help make a difference.” Back on shore, the group showed their 12 temperate loggers wrapped in reflective tape, which have accuracy to .001 degree. They found that their temperature loggers were most accurate when wrapped with the tape, and that propane generators were more efficient to run the aerators. They also get data from five light loggers. They group says they are in the process of applying for the required permits to eventually test their systems on the reef. Jack closed the presentation saying, “We just hope to make a difference.” And, they are well

On a cool January day, the locals will be wearing sweaters and slacks while the tourists will be in T-shirts and shorts. Even though it feels cool to us, fur is really never acceptable when standing next to a palm tree. Save your cold winter attire such as fur for the truly cold weather up north — like when you’re visiting Tallahassee. • Avoid socks. I remember when we first moved to the Keys, the weather got cool and I knew I’d become a local because I threatened to put on socks. Unless you are planning to go for a run, there really isn’t any need for socks in the Keys. The Keys are all about comfort and the one who can get their toes in the sand quickest always wins. • Wear sunscreen. Tourists always have the most amazing tans … said no one ever. When friends visit us from the North we are constantly reminding them to apply sunscreen. They seem to think that in January, when the weather is cooler that they

won’t get a sunburn. As locals, its important to wear sunscreen every day unless you want to make weekly trips to the dermatologist. • Capture the moment. You used to be able to spot a tourist a mile away by the bulky camera hung around their neck. Today’s tourists are a bit more techie and can instead be found huddled around their selfie sticks. We locals know it’s important to capture the important moments in life, but we leave our selfie sticks at home. Instead, we ask our local bartender friend or acquaintance at a neighboring table to take the picture. • The fanny pack. The 1980s popularized this awful contraption as a way to keep valuables safe and tourists have been donning them ever since. I realize the fanny pack could be considered convenient with its hands-free wearability, and easily accessible zipper pockets. But even if you are chasing after your kids at the park, opt for a crossbody bag or backpack to keep your items secure. • Slow drivers. I always know when it’s a holiday weekend in the Keys because of the horrendous traffic. It’s especially bad the closer you get to bridge. The cars slow, the cameras come out and everyone seems to forget that they should be focused on the road. We locals know that the best place to take in the view and the salty air is at our favorite watering hole with a drink in hand – not while driving on the Overseas Highway. If you’re a tourist reading this and I just described you, no hard feelings. We get you. After all, most of us came to the Keys on vacation and never left.

Keys Animal Hospital welcomes new animal doctor Weekly Staff report

here is a new vet caring for the furry, feathered and scaly creatures of Marathon and the Florida Keys. Last month, Dr. Michael Dunn and the staff at Keys Animal Hospital celebrated the arrival of Dr. Kyle Maddox, a recent graduate of the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, whose grandfather was also a vet who practiced medicine in a small town setting. “He brings lots of energy and new skills to our practice which helps us evaluate and diagnose our patients more effectively,” said Dunn. “He also has a pretty good surgical set.” Most recently Maddox interned at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine where he received advanced training in small animal surgery and medicine. “You can go anywhere and learn skills,” Maddox said. “But I am grateful to have found a wonderful group of people who share my philosophies. Mike is a great mentor and has really helped me to hone in on my skills in medicine and surgery.” Dunn arrived in the Keys fresh out of college when Dr. Rob DeField hired him in 1998. Ten years later, he took over the practice and recently expanded the clinic by adding two new exam rooms and a treatment room. “We have an ever-growing practice,” Dunn added. “And Dr. Maddox has a clear understanding of medicine that will help us provide a higher level of service, but his personality and talents fit right in.”

BOOKS: Fredrik Bachman’s “A Man Called Ove” (2012) and “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry” (2013). These two bestselling Swedish novels are delightful, heartwarming reads intertwined with enough dark humor and sarcasm to satisfy the crankiest of readers. TV SHOWS: “The Night of” HBO just finished its premier season of “The Night Of,” a story so complex and adept with contemporary twists and turns, it’s impossible to figure out “whodunit.” Naz, a Pakistani college student born and raised in New York City, steals his father’s cab to go to a party but ends up the next morning in the apartment of a dead, rich white girl. The viewer ends up following the police, the lawyers (a truly lovable John Turturro plays his defense lawyer), the trial, Rikers Island. But determining if he committed murder — well, lets just say, “reasonable doubt” might as well be a character, too.

Items like the Smokeless Ashtray, the Inside the Shell Egg Scrambler, the Chop-O-Matic, the Tuna Turner, and the diminutive yet dynamic Popeil Pocket Fisherman burst forth from the Ronco factories quicker than you can say Ginsu Knives. Of course, Ginsu knives would be what you used to fillet the fish you caught with the Pocket Fisherman, usually something no bigger than a large bluegill. And you’d certainly use the knives to slice through an aluminum soda can first just to see if they were still sharp. And then you could invite your friends over for the big fish dinner using Mr. Microphone. I don’t believe that Ron Popeil ever lived in the tropics. Then it must be carefully heated up, to separate the water from the composition. This process makes the hydrate, anhydrous. “The anhydrous hydrate would then be introduced into the upper portions of the eye wall. A large amount of the chemical would need to be administered by a large aircraft. The amount of chemical that would need to be used would vary according to the size of the tropical cyclone, the size of its eye, and the desired effect. Other factors would be wind speed, the amount of water in the air, barometric pressure, humidity, and other factors that help to make up a tropical cyclone. As soon as the chemical is added the tropical cyclone disruption begins. The more chemical that is introduced, the greater the effect will be and the longer it will last. This expectation can be hoped for up to the point where the eye wall is saturated. he Key West Parrot Head Club has been holding Marathon “phlockings” for the past year, but have made their new nest at Overseas Grill and Pub. With more than 200 clubs worldwide and 800 members in the Keys, the Key West Parrot Head Club, a chapter of Parrot Heads in Paradise, meets three times a month, once in Key West, in the Lower Keys, and in Marathon, and helps out 12 Monroe County nonprofits while gathering. “We needed to find a home, and Tim at Overseas has been awesome,” said 25-year-member and Marathon resident Sandee Shaw. “It will be our phlock’s new home as long as they will keep us.” She expects the phlock to be about 30-40 people at the event on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Shaw joined the group because she enjoyed Jimmy Buffett’s music, and although that’s still a big part, she said the most important thing was helping young musicians coming up. “We want to help out the young guns,” she said. “I started because of Jimmy Buffett, but stay involved because it is so much more than that.” Last year, the club raised $40,000 for local charities like Kids Come First, Grace Jones Daycare Center, Domestic Abuse Shelter, Habitat for Humanity of Key West & the Florida Keys, Wesley House, Keys Area Interdenominational Resources (KAIR), Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, Florida Keys SPCA, Reef Relief Coral Camp, MARC House, and Samuel’s House. Nationally, the club raised $43 million during 14 years. To join, swing by their monthly phlocking and check it out. Yearly membership levels range from $10 to $35 for individuals and couples, and $50 for business memberships. Rachel Price of Marathon recently joined. “I heard they were a great group of people who help out in the community,” she said after learning about the club from a friend. “It’s a nice way to meet people and network throughout the Keys, not just in Marathon.” PARROTHEADS: The next “party with a purpose” is on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Marathon’s Overseas Grill and Pub. Entertainment this month will be trop rocker Paul Kercher. The phlockings are held in Marathon the second Wednesday of the month.

PHLOCKING: is the behavior exhibited when a group of Parrot Heads, called a phlock, are all together at a meeting. There are parallels with the shoaling behavior of fish, the swarming behavior of insects, and herd behavior of land animals.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Resident opposes development’s driveway The proposed and approved (by the Marathon Planning Department) development plan of the Crystal Cove on U.S.1 and 49th Street, gulfside, intends to create a driveway opening onto 50th Street, gulfside, and allow its RV traffic to exit onto said street. This is a departure from the rules to protect residential homes from commercial development and sets a bad precedent. Further, the drive opening creates a 30-foot wide opening which violates the 15-foot buffer requirement between commercial and residential. In other words, the activities on the commercial property will be visible through this opening to the residential area. All the residents on 50th Street, gulfside, will be impacted. I urge residents in Marathon to attend the next and final meeting in the approval process of this project on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. to express your opinions. Harry W. Caplan Marathon

Joseph Pinder Jr. Joseph Bertram Pinder Jr., 86, an Islamorada founding family member, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 7, 2016. He was born in Key West on March 9, 1930 to Joseph B. Pinder Sr. and Ida Cothron Pinder. His great grandparents homesteaded in Key West and moved to Indian Key in 1870 where Joseph’s grandfather, Preston Pinder, was born in 1875. The family moved to Upper Matecumbe circa 1877. Pinder survived two of the most devastating hurricanes to hit Islamorada; the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 at only five years old and Hurricane Donna in 1960. His strong work ethic developed at 10 years old when he began working at A&B Fish House. He would also manage lobster traps and work in construction. On Feb. 7, 1953, he married Roberta “Bobby” Jacoby. Together they settled in Matecumbe and raised three sons. Pinder worked as constable before serving six years as the only Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling the Upper Keys. After his law enforcement career, he worked with his father at Pinder & Son appliance store before becoming the supervisor of maintenance at Cheeca Lodge. Joseph went on to open Pinder’s Refrigeration, where he offered local installation and repair services. Pinder was originally appointed to the Board of Monroe County Mosquito Control by Florida Governor Reubin Askew in 1977, where he would serve 17 years including time as chairman. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorie Brothers and grandson Jamie Pinder. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Roberta “Bobby,” sister Alma Pinder Dolton, sons Jack (Teresa), Joseph “Buddy” (Cerise), and Henry (Barbara), grandchildren Alisha Aviles (Chris), Andrea Barth (Ben), Brandon and Carrlee Pinder, Jake and Hank Pinder, and great grandchildren Tyler Pinder, Mason and Ethan Aviles, and Brody and Brantley Barth.

Aqueduct Authority announces rate reduction A 15 percent wastewater rate reduction was ratified by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s Board of Directors (FKAA) for all customers located in the FKAA’s wastewater districts, including Bay Point, Big Coppitt, Duck Key, Conch Key, Key Haven and Layton, as well as those located in the Cudjoe Regional Wastewater Service Area. The decrease is due to the economies of scale realized with the opening of the Cudjoe Wastewater Treatment Plant. To date, approximately half of the 7,300 properties in the service area have been invited to connect and the remainder, with the exception of some

outlying islands, are expected to be invited by the end of 2016.
