The Keys Weekly decided to take a hard look at moped/scooter accidents in Key West. The results were concrete figures on the number and location of accidents around Key West on a yearly basis. With 382 crashes in 2015, downtown saw the highest volume but areas along Roosevelt Boulevard saw some of the more serious crashes. So we asked …

KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 16, 2016 Next week: crash prevention, a look at scooter and car drivers sharing the road. Part 2 of a series
Injuries are serious HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
n March 3, 2003 Stuart Kemp, owner of 915 Restaurant, was struck on his Vespa at the intersection of Truman Avenue and Windsor Lane by an ambulance. His body was thrown against a cement wall, his face split in two (Le Fort maxillofacial trauma), he suffered vertebra injuries, losing one, and several of his teeth were later found embedded in the wall. Airlifted to Jackson Memorial, Kemp’s face was removed and rebuilt with titanium strips, bone grafts were placed in his jaw, and he spent six months in a neck/body cast. For one year, Kemp traveled to Miami every two weeks to undergo procedures, check ups and rehabilitation. His teeth took more than two years to heal. The crash resulted in a jury trial finding the ambulance negligible for running a red light without sirens or lights. It was only going 30 mph. This story may seem extreme but it happens more often than residents of Key West and the Florida Keys realize.
“I should have been dead. Personally, I will never ride a scooter again.” — Stuart Kemp, scooter accident victim, who admits he misses his Vespa for its convenience.
“We just had a local couple, riding double who were struck by a car and both had to be airlifted. They suffered critical injuries and will most likely have a long recovery ahead,” said Sandy Rodriquez, director of nursing at Lower Keys Medical Center. She attributes minor injuries such as broken ankles and scrapes to tourists horsing around while the more critical injuries are often locals who drive late at night. In serious accidents, alcohol is often a factor. Dr. Eric Herrera, an emergency room doctor at Lower Keys Medical Center, agrees. “Locals are more comfortable on the road and take more risks, like speeding, using alcohol, and swerving through traffic. Their accidents are fewer but more serious,” he said. On the other hand, Dr. Herrera noted, “Tourists’ inexperience causes more minor accidents because they may have never been on a scooter and aren’t familiar with our roads.” Dr. Herrera referenced a tourist who was testing a moped before renting it, accelerated into a wall and subsequently lost a kidney on his first day of vacation. He said all this happened before the victim had even signed the rental contract. At a minimum, the LKMC treats victims of scooter and moped crashes twice a week. Are there any solutions? “Ultimately, I would like to see more screening for experience from local rental companies, for all riders to wear helmets and more insurance laws for everyone,” said Dr. Herrera.
County attorney reprimands Clerk Shillinger gives Heavilin marching orders to correct contracts, preserve public records
E
arlier this month, Monroe County Attorney Bob Shillinger was presented with information that Clerk of the Court Amy Heavilin decided not to renew an important contract with an accounting consultant necessary for preparing the County’s financial statements and was deleting public records. After raising these concerns with the Clerk, Shillinger said today that the Clerk has taken actions to address these issues. “I’m pleased that the Clerk has begun the process to hire the consultant and has provided assurances that all public records will be properly preserved,” Shillinger said. In an email dated Aug. 31, the Clerk wrote John Keillor of Lanigan & Associates that her office would not renew the contract “for budget reasons as well as my loss in the primary election yesterday.” In prior years, that firm helped staff prepare the county’s financial statements, which are necessary to complete the annual external audit required by law. “It is critical that these documents are completed thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely fashion,” Shillinger said. Shillinger also received reports that the Clerk had deleted dozens of emails and shredded other documents in the days following her defeat in the Aug. 30 primary election. Shillinger and Heavilin met Sept. 2 to address these concerns. At the end of the meeting, Shillinger handed the Clerk a letter summarizing his concerns and advising that if the contract with the consultant was not renewed immediately, he would ask the Governor to consider suspending the Clerk. The Clerk began addressing these concerns immediately, including taking steps to renew the contract with Lanigan & Associates and providing assurances from her IT consultant that all public records had been preserved. “It does not appear at this time that either of these situations were intentional violations,” Shillinger said. —Contributed

C
elebrate the birthday of the United States Government at Florida Keys Community College’s Constitution Day event on Monday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library on the Key West Campus. Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 Founding Fathers on Sept. 17, 1787, thus laying the foundation of our government, rights, and freedoms. Coordinated by FKCC Business Law instructor and attorney Stephen Muffler, Constitution Day activities aim to educate the public on their rights under the Constitutional Amendments and encourage habits of being a good citizen. “The U.S. Constitution is the blue print of our country, market system and free society,” said Muffler. “It acts as the common denominator for all Americans, regardless of our differences.” The program will feature Florida Supreme Court Justice Fred Lewis, who will speak about the Constitution and its significance in our everyday lives. Appointed to the State’s
highest court in 1998, Justice Lewis founded Justice Teaching. The organization now has more than 4,000 volunteer lawyers and judges active in Florida public Florida Supreme schools, which enCourt Justice hances civic and Fred Lewis law-related education through active programs in all levels of Florida schools. In 2014, Justice Lewis received the prestigious Justice Sandra Day O’Connor national award for civic education recognizing his work with Justice Teaching as the top civic education program in the nation. Constitution Day attendees will receive free pocket Constitutions donated by the City of Key West’s Citizens Review Board. Party set for Green Parrot on Sept. 25
S
inger, songwriter, documentarian, and soul surfer, Tony Roberts, will officially release “Chasing the Sun” at a show at The Green Parrot Sunday, Sept. 25 beginning at 5:30 p.m. "’Chasing the Sun’ is a record about travel and life on the road, hope and the ups and downs of life and matters of the heart," says Tony, from his home in Key West. "I've always felt a sense of calm when I am traveling from one place to another. I went to college out of high school for engineering and dropped out because it bored the hell out of me," Tony confesses. "I really wanted to travel and be a novelist or a poet. Words were what really made me happy." Tony's musical wanderlust drove him to Key West and placed him in the island's unique enclave of musical talent where he was able to make a living playing music. But after a while, the road started calling Tony back. "I hit the road to seek out old friends, family, and anyone with a

story to tell or a song to sing, to visit and talk with and laugh and play music with. The first road trip ended up being sixty days just wandering around the southern part of the U.S. and then up and down the East Coast. And the songwriting flood gates burst open," he said. Over the next year or two, Tony would play countless gigs in Key West to make enough money to hit the road to anywhere that might feed his soul in a different way; to the Southwest or New Orleans or California or Boston or Barbados and all the detours in between. The travels and songs eventually culminated in “Chasing the Sun.” Tony likens music to his other passion, surfing. "I have moments of pure bliss when I disappear in the moment while traveling or performing." The album will be released Tuesday, Sept. 20 on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and most online retailers. — Contributed

artender Rachel Sack had her hands and blenders full at the recent Brewfest, which took place on South Beach surrounding Southernmost Beach Café, or Somo. Even though the festival celebrated beer, that didn’t stop people from swinging into the beach bar for some refreshing libations made by Sack. Sack moved to Key West from Atlanta three years ago, and has been shaking up cocktails for the past year and a half at Somo. She said the piña colada is her favorite to make, and always a popular choice with the bar guests. “It’s frozen, so people love it, especially on these super-hot days,” she said. “We put a secret ingredient of ice cream mix in ours, which makes it special.” When she isn’t bartending, she’s in nursing school studying nutrition and dietetics or at the gym. “I am always trying to do things outdoors and on the water,” she said. She said you can’t beat her office view, overlooking the ocean at the beach bar, “and I get to work with all of my friends.” And, what does she think goes best with the special piña colada? “Anything, but I would definitely order the blackened catch BLT wrap with avocado added in it,” she said. What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am president of the Conch Student Athletic Leadership Team, one of the captains of the varsity soccer team, and a member of Operation Support and the class of 2017 Executive Board. My sophomore year, I founded Jacob’s Closet through Kids Come First, where I collect sporting goods for local kids in need. I was also just accepted into the first Key West Ambassador Leadership Program for students. All of these activities are important to me because I want to be an active member of my school and also give back to my community. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? My biggest inspiration at Key West High School is my principal Amber Archer Acevedo. She was also my principal at Poinciana Elementary from kindergarten through fifth grade. She has helped me a lot over the years and has always believed in me. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Criminal Justice Operations, because we talk and learn about real-life situations. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? Even though I don’t use it much, I would say Facebook because all of my close friends and family members are on it, so I can keep up with their lives through their pictures and posts.
Dr. True Lansden When selecting a doctor for skin cancer treatment, you want to find an expert that you can trust. Dr. True is a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has treated skin cancers for over thirty years. He is dedicated to his patients and accepts medicare and most insurance.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Our biggest challenge is lack of affordable housing. If we do not work together to find a solution, future generations will not be able to live and raise a family here. What are your plans after high school? I would like to attend the United State Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut and major in naval architecture and marine engineering. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Yes, if I can afford to live here, because I want my kids to grow up like I grew up in this amazing place.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
HAYS BLINCKMANN
K
hays@keysweekly.com
ey West can be one of those places where the stars align, figuratively and literally, for people like Kelly Norman. As the marketing and development director of the Key West Theater, Norman is amping up the Key West Music scene bringing in big acts and a lot of style. A soft-talking, natural beauty, Norman is quickly turning the once unused theater into a hub for acts, concerts, shows, and fundraisers benefitting our community. Luring in such acts as Indigo Girls, Gin Blossoms, The Psychedelic Furs and Leon Russell, Norman is helping cement Key West’s music reputation as the most fun and unique in the Southern Hemisphere. Norman’s gypsy soul brought her to Key West when she didn’t finish her bachelors “because I was too busy working on my life experiences. I started in San Diego, Orlando, Key West, Baltimore, Park City and ended up right back here in Key West.” Here is where she met and married musician Nick Norman, who started at the theater when owner Tap Johnson asked him to build and run the recording studio. Norman joined the team as a fundraiser with a background working for multiple non-profit organizations through the NFL, projects for musician Kenny Chesney and a board member for the Island Time Music Festival — a nonprofit charity raising money for special needs children and the Little Yellow School House of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. “I was a stay-at-home mom when the theater started, but gears quickly changed and I became more and more involved with its development,” she said. “We all worked for very little pay and more for the passion. Once we added music, it was a no brainer. I found my home.”
KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 16, 2016
1. Full Name? Kelly Shabinaw Norman. 2. Worst nickname? That’s easy. What’s a word you wouldn’t want to be called that rhymes with Kelly? 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Levon Helm (singer/ drummer from The Band) because it would make my husband very happy. 4. What’s your “dream” concert? My dream concert happens everyday in my living room listening to my husband strum his guitar while my daughter dances around the house. Beach concerts are pretty amazing, too. Anytime you combine live music, sand and sun, it’s going to be an epic time. 5. Who is your celebrity crush and why? I never really understood the celebrity crush thing. I’m pretty sure I married mine. 6. What’s your pet peeve? People who are just mean. Be nice to the cashier. Wave to the stranger passing by. Smile a little.
CENTER STAGE
(behind the scenes)
12.What was your first thought this morning? SHOW DAY! Bus pulls in at 8 a.m.! Although they can be a little stressful at times, they are my favorite part of my work. 13. Favorite guilty pleasure? Wine. 14. Best/ funniest Key West siting or encounter you’ve ever had? Oh wow. I mean, it’s Key West. 15. Worst job you ever had? [HUGE GRIN] I’ve loved all my jobs … 16. If you could change someone’s opinion, what would it be? That blondes DO have more fun … Finish these sentences.. 17. Living in Key West … keeps the rest of the world jealous of me. 18. My autobiography would be titled … “So much to do, so little time.” 19. Politics are … not for me. 20. When I go, I will go … hopefully having made my mark somehow.
7. What’s the best and worst thing about working with musicians? The best is getting to work with people who have worked really hard to get where they are and love what they do. The worst is people wanting things – tickets, backstage, autographs. 8. Which TV character is your alter ego? I asked a few people and got Sloan from “Entourage” and Rachel from “Friends.” 9. What is your nerdiest passion? Crossword puzzles. 10. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? Tequila. It will make being on a deserted island much more entertaining. 11. If invisible what would you do in Key West? Probably go hang out on all the beautiful boats in the harbor. Naked.

W
e know the Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run is wildly popular with approximately 10,000 mainland bikers who make their annual pilgrimage to the Keys, but what of local bikers? Do they go, too? The most popular events are certainly the poker game, where the winner takes home $10,000 in cash,
and the rows and rows of parked motorcycles lining the lower end of Duval and Greene streets on display for the inspection of fans. The Poker Run, which started on Thursday and concludes on Sunday, Sept. 18, is a fundraiser for the Diabetes Research Institute and charities of the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club. — Weekly Staff report
MARATHON
Julie Johnson • What do you ride? I have a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe 2011, with a 1584cc motor. • How long have you been riding? Four years. • Where have you been? I’ve done several trips, but I’m what’s known as an “Iron Butt.” In order to earn that classification, you have to ride 1,000 miles in under 24 hours. We started in Marathon and rode almost all the way to Georgia before turning around and coming back. • Do you attend Bike Week events? I usually ride down, sometimes I stay the night. I love to check out the “show” on Duval and all of the vendors.
KEY LARGO
Michael Neves • What do you ride? 2003 Harley Davidson Road King, it’s the 100th year production. • How long have you been riding? I’ve been riding since I was 15. I took my motorcycle license on a 250cc Honda Rebel. My dad had me on the handlebars as an infant. • Where have you been? I ride this everyday, it’s an everyday cruiser. I took it to work the other day. I trailored it to Indiana for my sister’s college graduation. I’ve put 35,000 miles on it since 2006 when I bought it. • Do you attend Bike Week events? I went to Daytona Bike Week in 2009. It was awesome, motorcycles were everywhere. The energy from a rally and the Bloody Marys from Froggy’s were the best.
Dan Dedeo • What do you ride? Owns a 73 Harley Davidson Shovel Head and wife has a 40 Harley Super Low “We are constantly maintaining,” he said. • How long have you been riding? His bike buzz started 42 years ago while in the U.S. Navy. • Where have you been? As a veteran, he’s traveled the world on his bike, but his personal favorite is right here in Key West and is the Soldier Ride hosted by the Military Affairs Committee where they escort the Wounded Warriors in the parade around Key West. • Do you attend bike week events? As a charter member of the American Legion Riders Chapter 28, which was founded in Key West in 2009, he is looking forward to riding around and cruising the streets for this year’s Peterson’s Poker Run. “I enjoy the comradery of all the motorcycle clubs,” he said. The American Legion riders will also have a booth set up in Key West selling T-shirts.

Lionfish Derby BY THE NUMBERS:
T
he annual Upper Keys Lionfish Derby took place Sept. 10 at John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park. It wasn’t the resounding success it usually is — only 323 lionfish were harvested, but that’s still a large number of invasive fish removed from Keys waters. The reason for the poor showing? The weather. Organizers and participants say high winds and poor visibility may have been a factor of the low yield (only eight of the registered 13 teams had any luck). Also, the top-contending team that normally participates was unable to participate this year.
THERESA JAVA
theresa@keysweekly.com
Here’s the good news — data from the event suggests the lionfish population is static. “The size distribution of the landed fish, it is almost identical to last year,” said Lad Akins, REEF’s director of special projects. “This leads me to guess that the population is about the same as last year and we just had fewer teams fishing.”

Close in second place was “Half Circle,” who collected 103 fish. Team members were Anna McBee, Jess Levy, Travis Gomez-Phillips and Brett Roach. “Key Dives” took third place with 47 harvested lionfish. The team was Leslie Peaker, Mary Wipperman, Jason Adams and Mike Goldberg. REEF is hosting a special festival Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 29-Oct. 2. Seminars, parties and dives are planned. Lionfish were found in North Carolina.

2010

2014
The average size of the lionfish extended 123 millimeters from 139mm to 262mm. During the Derby, a 434mm fish was recorded, which is over 17 inches.

For anyone to face our club, it takes courage. We have guest speakers every week, but Michael Neri was different. Not just because the 35-year-old was a decorated Special Olympian, a leader among his peers and employee with MARC’s Mobile Landscape Crew — but because he possessed an air of confidence forged well before that day. Although he slowly read from a prepared speech, the room quickly fell silent; only Neri’s voice as he slowly worked his way through a powerful journey of courage and determination. For most, it would have taken about two minutes to read Neri’s speech. But it took him more than five — another hint that he had faced mountains in his life, only to climb each one as it came. During his story, there were tears in many of the eyes around the room; I know this because I was one of them. And it ended with a standing ovation. To honor our local Rotarians throughout the Keys, I am sharing Michael’s story, just as he wrote and delivered it to our club. He still inspires me today—as well as the hundreds of men and women in Monroe County who practice the Four Way Test.
My name is Michael Neri. I am an athlete leader. I have been participating in Special Olympics for over 20 years. I started with the sport of Speed Skating in New York at age 10. My dad took me to practices and games. He loved watching me get my medals. My dad was my best coach. My dad died from cancer in 1980. I am glad that my dad and I shared Special Olympics. He would be proud to know that I compete in bowling, paddleboarding, swimming bocce and cycling. I also like triathlon. My favorite sport is paddleboarding because I can be on the water and I feel free. The thing I like best about Special Olympics is competing and having fun with my friends. I know that my dad is [with] us too, when we say the Special Olympics athlete’s oath: ‘Let me win but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.’ Thank you for coming tonight to support me and my friends.
