bout half the spectators left the Marathon City Council meeting Tuesday almost as soon as it began. Marathon Councilman Dan Zieg had placed an item on the agenda regarding Sunset Grille, the Knights Key restaurant recently denied its application for extra parking and the right to play amplified music.

Before Zieg could begin the discussion, however, City Attorney David Migut advised him to say nothing.

“The timeline for appeal has not expired,” Migut said. “There’s potential for litigation [from Sunset Grille owners]. I advise you not to discuss it in public.”

Then Sunset’s attorney, Frank Greenman, asked to address the

council.

Mayor Mark Senmartin said, “We are going to defer to our attorney. We will stand by until the appeals process has passed.”

At that point, about two dozen spectators stood up and left the auditorium and the council worked on the rest of the evening’s agenda.

The Marathon City Council gave a quasi-official approval to go ahead with three important city projects. Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron proposed a public pool exploratory committee; Vice Mayor Bill Kelly suggested a specific plan to approach the Monroe County School Board about developing the Marathon Manor property; and the board also gave Rich Anderson the go-ahead to continue with a plan for a big name music concert in February.

“I want countywide experts on the committee who can advise on the cost and maintenance of swimming pools,” Coldiron said.

Kelly proposed that he, City Manager Chuck Lindsey, and Deputy City Manager George Garrett sit down with Monroe County School District’s Superintendent Mark Porter, School Operation and Planning Director Pat Lefere and Board Member John Dick.

“Marathon Manor has been sitting there since 2000. I would like to put our hand out and see what we can do with this building and this property,” Kelly said. “It’s possible we could develop affordable housing and a community pool at the same time. But we can’t get there until we have an open meeting about it. Marathon is putting a hand out, we want to help. Let’s get this done.”

Kelly said he’s interested in a city partnership with the school district to develop the property, or having the school district gift the property to the city to develop.

The council directed city staff to work with Rich Anderson on a concert planned for February at Marathon Community Park’s amphitheater.

According to Anderson, both Molly Hatchet and the Georgia Satellites have promised to play. Anderson must work with the park staff and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to outline the details before final approval for the concert. Concert proceeds will benefit veterans.

Finally, the council was able to negotiate a compromise between the developers of Crystal Bay and the residents of 50th Street who objected to a gate that would serve as an exit (only) for RVs. Jim Saunders, the agent representing the developer, suggested reshaping a retention pond that would allow for the proper turning radius to allow the RVs to maneuver out of spots and exit on U.S.1.

On Tuesday, the Key Colony Beach City Commission decided to more widely publicize the position for city administrator in the Middle Keys city. At the next meeting, commissioners will consider an advertisement and a list of places to publish it. At presstime, there were four applicants: Former Marathon City Manager Mike Puto, former KCB Commissioner Ryan Schraffenberger, KCB Utilities Clerk Blanca Kulig, and Marathon attorney Kerry Willis who also applied in 2015 to be Marathon’s manager.

New Trauma Star ’copter begins service next month

M

onroe County’s newly acquired Trauma Star helicopter, a 2002 Sikorsky S-76 C+, arrived in Marathon last week and now is being outfitted with medical equipment. Pilots also are being trained.

The goal is to have the helicopter ready for air ambulance service by early October, pending FAA approval, Monroe County Fire Rescue Chief James Callahan said.

The County will keep the 1981 Sikorsky – which is still operational but has become increasingly expensive to maintain – as a backup to be used when the 2002 Sikorsky is out of service for maintenance.

“This new bird is a great addition,” Callahan said. “Now, with a second helicopter, we will be able to provide life-saving service to the citizens and visitors of Monroe County 365 days a year.”

Monroe County residents pay no out-of-pocket costs to use Trauma Star.

Since operations began in 2006, Trauma Star has flown more than 2,400 people from the Florida Keys to trauma centers and hospitals on the mainland. During the first eight months of this year, Trauma Star has transported 341 people, including 67 for trauma alerts, 12 with strokes and 13 with heart attacks.

Trauma Star, a joint operation of Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Sheriff’s Office, is a county service whose operations now almost pay for itself.

The program transported a record number of 397 people last year. Revenues collected from insurance and out-of-county patients covered 96 percent of the cost. That left only $285,516 of the bill, or just $1.41 per $100,000 in taxable property, to be paid for by taxpayers.

n March 3, 2003 Stuart Kemp, owner of 915 Restaurant, was struck on his Vespa at the intersection of Truman Avenue and Windsor Lane by an ambulance. His body was thrown against a cement wall, his face split in two (Le Fort maxillofacial trauma), he suffered vertebra injuries, losing one, and several of his teeth were later found embedded in the wall. Airlifted to Jackson Memorial, Kemp’s face was removed and rebuilt with titanium strips, bone grafts were placed in his jaw, and he spent six months in a neck/body cast. For one year, Kemp traveled to Miami every two weeks to undergo procedures, check ups and rehabilitation. His teeth took more than two years to heal. The crash resulted in a jury trial finding the ambulance negligible for running a red light without sirens or lights. It was only going 30 mph.

This story may seem extreme but it happens more often than residents of Key West and the Florida Keys realize.

“We just had a local couple, riding double who were struck by a car and both had to be airlifted.

They suffered critical injuries and will most likely have a long recovery ahead,” said Sandy Rodriquez, director of nursing at Lower Keys Medical Center. She attributes minor injuries such as broken ankles and scrapes to tourists horsing around while the more critical injuries are often locals who drive late at night. In serious accidents, alcohol is often a factor.

Dr. Eric Herrera, an emergency room doctor at Lower Keys Medical Center, agrees.

“Locals are more comfortable on the road and take more risks, like speeding, using alcohol, and swerving through traffic.

On the other hand, Dr. Herrera noted, “Tourists’ inexperience causes more minor accidents because they may have never been on a scooter and aren’t familiar with our roads.” Dr. Herrera referenced a tourist who was testing a moped before renting it, accelerated into a wall and subsequently lost a kidney on his first day of vacation. He said all this happened before the victim had even signed the rental contract.

At a minimum, the LKMC treats victims of scooter and moped crashes twice a week.

Are there any solutions?

“Ultimately, I would like to see more screening for experience from local rental companies, for all riders to wear helmets and more insurance laws for everyone,” said Dr. Herrera.

YouTube search of “Radical Heroes Video Game” brought up several testers who tried out the demo version of a new PC game dropping toward the end of November or early December. “This is awesome,” a reviewer says while the 2D character is boogie dancing and preceding to jump and beat up ninja turtle-like creatures in the 3D Crimson City. Mad Unicorn Games, the makers of “Radical Heroes: Crimson City Chaos,” is owned by Marathon residents and brothers Noah and Moses Doyle.

“We’ve been working on it for three years,” said Noah, but the brothers have been creating games since 2002ish when Noah began working on graphic designing and Moses learned game coding. Now, with a publisher and the demo on a popular gaming site, Steam, which is like E-Bay or Amazon for gaming, the two say Radical Heroes is 95 percent done.

“It’s been a lot of time and sacrifice,” said Noah, who is married with an 11-year-old daughter.

no help with this, everything was out of pocket. I did the graphics, Moses coded the engine, and Moses and friends donated the sound.”

The game will probably get a teen rating when it goes live (since the characters are fighters), but there is no blood or gore. Noah’s daughter, Marina, has been playing the game for the past three years, “She’s been around since the start,” he said, and that it is easy enough for a seven-year-old to play and enjoy.

The arcade-like graphics will appeal to ’80s and ’90s kids, “We kept with the pop culture theme,” said Noah. There are 40 different pixel players to pick from, and when the game launches, up to four people can play at a time.

“There is a sea of indie games out there,” said Noah, “but most don’t bother with them because they are poorly made. We used custom technology and did things that others can’t do.”

He said the pricing of the full downloadable game will be in the range of $10-15 and will launch exclusively on PC. They may add other options at a later time for consoles or apps. And, this is not the only hardcore project they have lined up, “we have two other viable products to work on next,” they said.

n this issue, the Weekly is paying special notice to the Rotarians of the Florida Keys.

“Yusi” Bonachea is a fouryear member, comfortable (and vitally necessary) in her support role. In the past she’s served as the school liaison for Rotary’s youth club, Interact. She’s been a club administrator, and now she’s the secretary.

It’s a role she was born to — a native of Marathon, she moved away with her mom, but returned at 14 years old to graduate MHS in 1994. By 2006, she’d signed on with the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority where she’s a customer service area manager. She keeps busy with the Rotary Club, work, and her two boys — Johnny, 13, and Jayden, 8.

Volunteering, she said, has brought something very positive to her life — the ability to work with like-minded individuals on worthwhile projects.

“Besides helping with Rotary projects, club members also volunteer for other charity work,” she said. “For example, a group of us always help at the Sombrero Beach Run.”

10. What makes you laugh? My co-workers.

11. What makes you happy? My kids.

12. If invisible what would you do? [Smiling and blushing] I really can’t say …

13. What was your first thought this morning?

I hope my kids don’t miss the bus.

• About the president: David Van Loon, a New Jersey native, played ball all the way through college at University of New Hampshire before he transferred to the University of New Haven for a masters degree. Immediately upon graduation, he moved to Key West to teach for one year.

After four years, he changed career tracks to become a full-fledged lawyer in 2003. Van Loon is a partner at Highsmith & Van Loon. In his spare time, he coaches youth sports and spends time with his family — two children and wife Angela Wardlow. “I am proud to be a Rotarian,” he said.

BRIEFLY Bike riders welcome for ReMARCable Ride The ReMARCable Tour de Keys, a 100-mile Key Largo to Key West bike ride, is set for Saturday, Sept. 24.

The event raises money for MARC, a Monroe County nonprofit agency that serves adults with developmental disabilities. Bonefish tournament comes to Marathon

Take Stock in Children scholarships available

Among the Middle Keys' oldest charitable fishing events, the challenge is set for Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 22-25. Trophies and prizes are awarded to the individual and team champions scoring the largest bonefish and permit and to the top anglers in fly and grand slam. Other awards include the cheeky wet-pants champion titles for anglers wading from shore.

Celebrate Constitution Day at FKCC

C

elebrate the birthday of the United States Government at Florida Keys Community College’s Constitution Day event on Monday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library on the Key West Campus. Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 Founding Fathers on Sept. 17, 1787, thus laying the foundation of our government, rights, and freedoms.

Coordinated by FKCC Business Law instructor and attorney Stephen Muffler, Constitution Day activities aim to educate the public on their rights under the Constitutional Amendments and encourage habits of being a good citizen.

“The U.S. Constitution is the blue print of our country, market system and free society,” said Muffler. “It acts as the common denominator for all Americans, regardless of our differences.”

The program will feature Florida Supreme Court Justice Fred Lewis, who will speak about the Constitution and its significance in our everyday lives. Appointed to the State’s

highest court in 1998, Justice Lewis founded Justice Teaching.

The organization now has more than 4,000 volunteer lawyers and judges active in Florida public Florida Supreme schools, which enCourt Justice hances civic and Fred Lewis law-related education through active programs in all levels of Florida schools. In 2014, Justice Lewis received the prestigious Justice Sandra Day O’Connor national award for civic education recognizing his work with Justice Teaching as the top civic education program in the nation.

e know the Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run is wildly popular with approximately 10,000 mainland bikers who make their annual pilgrimage to the Keys, but what of local bikers? Do they go, too?

The most popular events are certainly the poker game, where the winner takes home $10,000 in cash,

and the rows and rows of parked motorcycles lining the lower end of Duval and Greene streets on display for the inspection of fans.

The Poker Run, which started on Thursday and concludes on Sunday, Sept. 18, is a fundraiser for the Diabetes Research Institute and charities of the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club.

Julie Johnson • What do you ride? I have a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe 2011, with a 1584cc motor.

• How long have you been riding?

Four years.

• Where have you been? I’ve done several trips, but I’m what’s known as an “Iron Butt.” In order to earn that classification, you have to ride 1,000 miles in under 24 hours. We started in Marathon and rode almost all the way to Georgia before turning around and coming back.

• Do you attend Bike Week events? I usually ride down, sometimes I stay the night. I love to check out the “show” on Duval and all of the vendors.

Michael Neves • What do you ride? 2003 Harley Davidson Road King, it’s the 100th year production.

• How long have you been riding? I’ve been riding since I was 15. I took my motorcycle license on a 250cc Honda Rebel. My dad had me on the handlebars as an infant.

• Where have you been? I ride this everyday, it’s an everyday cruiser. I took it to work the other day. I trailored it to Indiana for my sister’s college graduation. I’ve put 35,000 miles on it since 2006 when I bought it.

• Do you attend Bike Week events? I went to Daytona Bike Week in 2009.

It was awesome, motorcycles were everywhere. The energy from a rally and the Bloody Marys from Froggy’s were the best.

Dan Dedeo • What do you ride? Owns a 73 Harley Davidson Shovel Head and wife has a 40 Harley Super Low “We are constantly maintaining,” he said.

• How long have you been riding? His bike buzz started 42 years ago while in the U.S. Navy.

• Where have you been? As a veteran, he’s traveled the world on his bike, but his personal favorite is right here in Key West and is the Soldier Ride hosted by the Military Affairs Committee where they escort the Wounded Warriors in the parade around Key West.

• Do you attend bike week events? As a charter member of the American Legion Riders Chapter 28, which was founded in Key West in 2009, he is looking forward to riding around and cruising the streets for this year’s Peterson’s Poker Run. “I enjoy the comradery of all the motorcycle clubs,” he said. The American Legion riders will also have a booth set up in Key West selling t-shirts.

For anyone to face our club, it takes courage. We have guest speakers every week, but Michael Neri was different. Not just because the 35-year-old was a decorated Special Olympian, a leader among his peers and employee with MARC’s Mobile Landscape Crew — but because he possessed an air of confidence forged well before that day.

Although he slowly read from a prepared speech, the room quickly fell silent; only Neri’s voice as he slowly worked his way through a powerful journey of courage and determination.

For most, it would have taken about two minutes to read Neri’s speech. But it took him more than five — another hint that he had faced mountains in his life, only to climb each one as it came.

During his story, there were tears in many of the eyes around the room; I know this because I was one of them.

And it ended with a standing ovation.

To honor our local Rotarians throughout the Keys, I am sharing Michael’s story, just as he wrote and delivered it to our club. He still inspires me today—as well as the hundreds of men and women in Monroe County who practice the Four Way Test.

My name is Michael Neri.

I am an athlete leader.

I have been participating in Special Olympics for over 20 years. I started with the sport of Speed Skating in New York at age 10.

My dad took me to practices and games. He loved watching me get my medals. My dad was my best coach. My dad died from cancer in 1980. I am glad that my dad and I shared Special Olympics. He would be proud to know that I compete in bowling, paddleboarding, swimming bocce and cycling.

espite a little rain at the beginning, the Red, White, and Blue Barbeque hosted by Sunset Grille overlooking the Seven Mile Bridge was a successful fundraising event for AIDS Help, which offers services, like medicine and housing, to 65 Middle Keys residents who are battling AIDS and 340 clients throughout the Keys. usicians are sometimes easy targets for humor… so much so that musicians are the ones who most often tell musician jokes. There are some good ones out there, and I don’t think someone has to be a musician to understand these nest few examples.

JOHN BARTUS is a City Council member and a former Mayor of the City of Marathon. John is also a musician who performs around town at various establishments.

Q: How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb?

A: None … they have a machine that does it for them these days.

Q: How many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb?

A: 100 … one to change the bulb, and 99 to say that they could have done it better.

Q: How many lead singers does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Only one … they stand there, and the whole world revolves around ’em.

Q: What’s the difference between a violin and a cello?

A: A cello burns longer.

Q: Why do bagpipers walk around when they play?

A: To get away from all the damn noise!

Q: What do you call a bass player without a girlfriend?

A: Homeless.

Q: What do you call a guy who likes to hang out with musicians?

A: A drummer.

The drummers always seem to take more than their share of abuse, save for optimistic accordion players with pagers, and indie band members whose main gig

requires them to say, “You want fries with that?” Following this is one of my favorite musician jokes of all time, seeing some humor in an otherwise tragic event.

Right after the helicopter carrying legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn crashed to the ground, Stevie woke up to find himself standing on the biggest concert stage he ever saw. His guitar was already strapped on, and as he looked around, there were guitars, amplifiers, keyboards, horns, drums, basses, and PA equipment set up for what looked to be the biggest musical performance of all time. All of a sudden, Stevie spied none other than Jimi Hendrix walking out from backstage, getting ready to plug into an amplifier. At that moment, Stevie knew how he got from the helicopter onto this stage.

Stevie walked over to Jimi, shook his hand, and told Jimi that he was one of his main inspirations. Jimi said, “We’ve been watching you, too, man. You done us all proud.”

About that time, every deceased rock legend comes walking out on stage: John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Pigpen from the Grateful Dead, Jim Morrison, Buddy Holly, Brian Jones, Mama Cass, Roy Orbison, Keith Moon, Ricky Nelson, Bob Marley, Del Shannon, Otis Redding, and even the King—Elvis Presley—all start tuning up and getting ready for what appears to be a big jam session. Stevie looks at Jimi and says, “I must have died and gone to rock and roll heaven!”

Hendrix replies, “Don’t be so quick to judge, man.” Just then, Karen Carpenter takes her place behind the central drum riser, starts counting time with her sticks, and says, “Alright, boys, ‘Close to You!’ One, two….”
