How is it that even the most seemingly innocent toys can have inherent risks? For instance, this summer McDonald’s had to recall Step-iT activity wristbands given away in its Happy Meals due to cases of skin irritation (Yes, your watch may harm you now). Yet, there are probably kids out there who still want it. So, in the spirit of making “adult” decisions, the Weekly asked locals…

What’s the most dangerous toy you would want to own?

“A drone. I heard a story about one falling out of the sky and almost hitting someone,” said Betsy Sanchez of Office Depot.

“A Koenigsegg One:1,” said Eric Perez, of Advanced Auto Parts.

Kim Gaddy, of Al’s Carpet, said “Hover boards.”

“A nerf torque bow. Those things were deadly, I took my dad out twice,” said Mike Delgado.

Ron Spodnik, of Divers Direct, said, “Down here a motorcycle can be dangerous. Especially after I see how people drive.”

Shillinger gives Heavilin marching orders to correct contracts, preserve public records

E

arlier this month, Monroe County Attorney Bob Shillinger was presented with information that Clerk of the Court Amy Heavilin decided not to renew an important contract with an accounting consultant necessary for preparing the County’s financial statements and was deleting public records. After raising these concerns with the Clerk, Shillinger said today that the Clerk has taken actions to address these issues. “I’m pleased that the Clerk has begun the process to hire the consultant and has provided assurances that all public records will be properly preserved,” Shillinger said. In an email dated Aug. 31, the Clerk wrote John Keillor of Lanigan & Associates that her office would not renew the contract “for budget reasons as well as my loss in the primary election yesterday.” In prior years, that firm helped staff prepare the county’s financial statements, which are necessary to complete the annual external audit required by law. “It is critical that these documents are completed thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely fashion,” Shillinger said. Shillinger also received reports that the Clerk had deleted dozens of emails and shredded other documents in the days following her defeat in the Aug. 30 primary election. Shillinger and Heavilin met Sept. 2 to address these concerns. At the end of the meeting, Shillinger handed the Clerk a letter summarizing his concerns and advising that if the contract with the consultant was not renewed immediately, he would ask the Governor to consider suspending the Clerk. The Clerk began addressing these concerns immediately, including taking steps to renew the contract with Lanigan & Associates and providing assurances from her IT consultant that all public records had been preserved. “It does not appear at this time that either of these situations were intentional violations,” Shillinger said. —Contributed

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 16, 2016 Next week: crash prevention, a look at scooter and car drivers sharing the road Part 2 of a series

Injuries are serious HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

n March 3, 2003 Stuart Kemp, owner of 915 Restaurant, was struck on his Vespa at the intersection of Truman Avenue and Windsor Lane by an ambulance. His body was thrown against a cement wall, his face split in two (Le Fort maxillofacial trauma), he suffered vertebra injuries, losing one, and several of his teeth were later found embedded in the wall. Airlifted to Jackson Memorial, Kemp’s face was removed and rebuilt with titanium strips, bone grafts were placed in his jaw, and he spent six months in a neck/body cast. For one year, Kemp traveled to Miami every two weeks to undergo procedures, check ups and rehabilitation. His teeth took more than two years to heal. The crash resulted in a jury trial finding the ambulance negligible for running a red light without sirens or lights. It was only going 30 mph. Lionfish Derby BY THE NUMBERS:

T

THERESA JAVA

theresa@keysweekly.com

he annual Upper Keys Lionfish Derby took place Sept. 10 at John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park. It wasn’t the resounding success it usually is — only 323 lionfish were harvested, but that’s still a large number of invasive fish removed from Keys waters. The reason for the poor showing? The weather. Organizers and participants say high winds and poor visibility may have been a factor of the low yield (only eight of the registered 13 teams had any luck). Also, the top-contending team that normally participates was un-

able to participate this year. Here’s the good news — data from the event suggests the lionfish population is static. “The size distribution of the landed fish, it is almost identical to last year,” said Lad Akins, REEF’s director of special projects. “This leads me to guess that the population is about the same as last year and we just had fewer teams fishing.”

Close in second place was “Half Circle,” who collected 103 fish. Team members were Anna McBee, Jess Levy, Travis Gomez-Phillips and Brett Roach. “Key Dives” took third place with 47 harvested lionfish. The team was Leslie Peaker, Mary Wipperman, Jason Adams and Mike Goldberg. REEF is hosting a special festival Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 29-Oct. 2. Seminars, parties and dives are planned. TV: Netflix Longmire Season 5 starts September 23 If you haven’t met Walt Longmire, it’s time. The last of the Americanhero-cowboy-sheriff-good-guy combo, Longmire is an American crime drama with the feel of the modern day Wild West. Set in Wyoming, Sheriff Longmire is keeping an eye on a town full of characters from the ranch born and raised, to the outsiders who have invaded, from the white folks to the Indians on the Rez, there is no end the plethora of deep seated loyalty, hatred, love and suspicion amongst the town. Throw in some guns, horses, amazing scenery and a few murders and it’s good old fashion Western. Spend the week binging on the first four seasons or get excited for the new episodes airing Sept 23.

Books: All Families Are Psychotic by Douglas Coupland Coupland, who became famous for naming the generation after the Baby Boomers and before Millennials, Generation X, is a gifted and sardonic storyteller. The book “All Families Are Psychotic” is the perfect Sunday afternoon couch read in order to avoid your real family. Set in Florida (which we all can relate) it’s the story of the messed up, screwed up, and eff-ed up Drummond family on a series of adventures that only Coupland can weave together involving the space shuttle, Disney world, Daytona Beach, robbery, drugs, AIDS, black market baby sales, and a letter written from Prince William. If this book were on Netflix, everyone would be watching it. While printed in 2002, it is still relevant and incredible funny today.

These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I’m involved with many organizations like National Honor Society, Take Stock in Children, Mu Alpha Theta math club, Key Club, and many more. These organizations are very important to me because they give back to the community in many ways.

LORENA PEREZ JUNIOR

My biggest inspiration at Coral Shores has been Mr. Ellsworth because he’s an exemplary teacher with a kind heart, who really cares for his students’’s success. He taught me to challenge myself in and out of the classroom. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? The class that has best prepared me for life after high school is AP Human Geography, because ii I learned about the patterns and different processes that lead to greater human understanding. This course also taught me about different religions and cultures, which is very important to know due to our diverse communities. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Snapchat, My favorite filter is the frowny face. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenge is keeping our environment clean, which can be hard to do with the amount of tourists that come to visit the Keys. What are your plans after high school? I plan on attending a four four-year university and later on specialize specializing in orthopedic surgery. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? For now, I plan on coming back after college because it’s such a unique place with a caring community.

e know the Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run is wildly popular with approximately 10,000 mainland bikers who make their annual pilgrimage to the Keys, but what of local bikers? Do they go, too? The most popular events are certainly the poker game, where the winner takes home $10,000 in cash,

and the rows and rows of parked motorcycles lining the lower end of Duval and Greene streets on display for the inspection of fans. The Poker Run, which started on Thursday and concludes on Sunday, Sept. 18, is a fundraiser for the Diabetes Research Institute and charities of the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club. — Weekly Staff report

Kim Bouchard • What do you ride? I ride a 2011 Harley Davidson Street Glide, it’s my second motorcycle. • How long have you been riding? I’ve been riding since 2002, but on my own since 2005. • Where have you been? I’ve traveled a few times to the Blue Ridge Mountains. My longest trip was in 2013 when I traveled through the Blue Ridge Mountains, Pennsylvania, New York and into Canada. Once there, we rode around the Great Lakes and back down alongside the Mississippi, through Tennessee, and back down. All together the trip was 5,500 miles and took about four weeks. • What’s your favorite thing about Bike Week in Key West? The ride down. Any excuse to ride to Key West is a good one. I’ll probably head down for the day Saturday, see my friends throughout the Keys, and head back home. KEY LARGO

Michael Neves • What do you ride? 2003 Harley Davidson Road King, it’s the 100th year production. • How long have you been riding? I’ve been riding since I was 15. I took my motorcycle license on a 250cc Honda Rebel. My dad had me on the handlebars as an infant. • Where have you been? I ride this everyday, it’s an everyday cruiser. I took it to work the other day. I trailored it to Indiana for my sister’s college graduation. I’ve put 35,000 miles on it since 2006 when I bought it. • Do you attend Bike Week events? I went to Daytona Bike Week in 2009. It was awesome, motorcycles were everywhere. The energy from a rally and the Bloody Marys from Froggy’s were the best.

• What do you ride? A 2014 Harley Davidson CVO Screaming Eagle Softail Deluxe Edition • How long have you been riding? Since I was 15 with dirt bikes first, then small street bikes, then took a break for 25 years as a father. Now I’m on my second Harley Davidson. • Where have you been? I have driven my Harley almost 9,000 miles all around Florida in the last year visiting family and events. We just came home last night from California for a family wedding where I rented an Indian Roadmaster on the Pacfic Coast Highway with a high school pal. We have been to Daytona Bike week and Leesburg Bikefest for the past two years and plan to continue. • What you love about Bike Week? The camaraderie among all the diverse bikers who attend. Driving down the Overseas Highway with water on both sides, and of course the fun on Duval Street. I like looking at all the custom bikes that line Duval Street.

his cosy, square-shaped bar overlooks the ocean and offers full liquor, wine and beer. The view is as delicious as the food. “Mmmm … our tuna nachos are so good,” said Brandi James, the outside bartender at Island Grill at Mandalay in Key Largo. It’s a layered dish — crispy wonton chips at the bottom stacked with wakame (seaweed), wasabi, teriyaki glaze, sriracha and soy sauces, sesame seeds and fresh scallions. It’s Island Grill’s most-favored appetizer and it’s “only a little bit spicy.” It pairs well with the mango margarita, Brandi’s favorite drink to shake up. The fresh mango’s sweetness offsets the nachos’ tangy spiciness. Other favorites are the lobster mascarpone egg rolls, which is Maine lobster meat and an Italian cream cheese fried and served over Asian coleslaw. “I love my co-workers. As soon as I started here, we all really got along,” said Brandi. It just so happens that Brandi’s mother is a manager, her sister a busser, and her other sister is a server on staff there as well. Brandi followed her family down here from Ludington, Michigan a year ago. When not tending bar, she enjoys boating with her family. he Village of Islamorada’s Adult Coed Kickball League kicked off on Sept. 13 at Founder’s Park. Florida Keys Electric Cooperative team faced off against team Kick A$$. Since 2009, the Village has included kickball into their line-up of annual activities. This fall, four teams have registered to compete, but expect that number to grow as the year progresses — in past they’ve had as many as 10. With only a few teams, the league is self-umpired. League fees are typically $100 for each team. “We usually have rosters of up to 20 people, you have to have a minimum of four girls and four guys to play,” said Annie Onsgard, park operations coordinator. “We will do another season in the winter, just have to see how it goes.” Florida Keys Electric Cooperative’s team showed a strong debut, winning decisively 10-0. They had help, thanks in part to a grand slam by Mike Synder. Future games are scheduled every Tuesday through October 25 at 7 and 7:45 p.m. — Weekly Staff report

For anyone to face our club, it takes courage. We have guest speakers every week, but Michael Neri was different. Not just because the 35-year-old was a decorated Special Olympian, a leader among his peers and employee with MARC’s Mobile Landscape Crew — but because he possessed an air of confidence forged well before that day. Although he slowly read from a prepared speech, the room quickly fell silent; only Neri’s voice as he slowly worked his way through a powerful journey of courage and determination. For most, it would have taken about two minutes to read Neri’s speech. But it took him more than five — another hint that he had faced mountains in his life, only to climb each one as it came. During his story, there were tears in many of the eyes around the room; I know this because I was one of them. And it ended with a standing ovation. To honor our local Rotarians throughout the Keys, I am sharing Michael’s story, just as he wrote and delivered it to our club. He still inspires me today—as well as the hundreds of men and women in Monroe County who practice the Four Way Test.

My name is Michael Neri. I am an athlete leader. I have been participating in Special Olympics for over 20 years. I started with the sport of Speed Skating in New York at age 10. My dad took me to practices and games. He loved watching me get my medals. My dad was my best coach. My dad died from cancer in 1980. I am glad that my dad and I shared Special Olympics. He would be proud to know that I compete in bowling, paddleboarding, swimming bocce and cycling. I also like triathlon. My favorite sport is paddleboarding because I can be on the water and I feel free. The thing I like best about Special Olympics is competing and having fun with my friends. I know that my dad is [with] us too, when we say the Special Olympics athlete’s oath: ‘Let me win but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.’ Thank you for coming tonight to support me and my friends.
