The Weekly snuck into Marathon Community Theater’s story slam this past weekend to listen in on the local raconteurs. The theme for the evening was underwater (literally and figuratively). Story tellers competed for cash and gift prizes, while enjoying drinks, popcorn, and laughs. After the dust settled, contestants spilled the beans about their underwater adventures. We asked …
What was the moral of the story? The winner of the story slam, Carl Carlson, said, “In 40 years of fishing, I’ve never had a crazier day than when shark fishing caused a heart attack for my old buddy Ray.”
“Laughter is better than crack. That’s why I like the theater, it keeps me off drugs,” quipped John Schaefer.
“There’s a Dave Barry quote that says, ‘Staying on the surface [of the ocean] all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent.’ I called my story Under the Big Top thanks in part to that,” said Judy Manning.

“Teach your wife what the ‘no air’ sign means before you go diving,” laughed Tom O’Neil.
DocDanZieg@gmail.com Jackie O’Neil said, “That even an unexpected moment during my first dive could end up being magical.” Jackie was lucky enough to come across a pair of turtles … uh … “hugging.”

Embrace ‘Energiewende’
Vote ‘no’ on Amendment 1
A generation of Germans picked up the renewable torch that the Reagan administration tossed aside … and renamed it “die Energiewende.” The word translates simply as “energy change.” But there’s nothing simple about the Energiewende. It calls for an end to the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power and embraces clean, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass. Most Americans just assume that the only way to get power is from a few large generating plants, usually owned by corporate utilities operating as monopolies. Not so in Germany. Decentralizing electricity was at the core of the example of the revolutionary movement known as the Energiewende. Decentralization rewarded people who installed solar panels on their roofs, or invested in cooperatives that bought wind turbines, by paying them for the energy they produced. Let’s have an energy change in the United States with Florida leading the way. Don’t let the utilities control solar power in the Sunshine State. Vote “No” in November on Amendment 1 and make solar the decentralized power source it should be.
Last Stand opposes Florida Amendment 1 and is recommending a “no” vote on Nov. 8. This Amendment, titled the “Rights of Electricity Consumers Regarding Solar Energy Choice,” was drafted by statewide utilities in order to control how Floridians can install and use solar panels on their own properties. The campaign to pass the Amendment is funded by Florida Power and Light, Duke Energy and Tampa Electric and is designed to protect their monopoly markets and profits. Florida is one of only five states that specifically prohibit companies from installing solar panels on homes or businesses and then selling the power directly to the consumer, bypassing the utilities. These utilities want the constitution to perpetuate their strangle hold on the right to sell electricity even if the effect is to restrict expansion of solar power installations throughout the state. … Amendment 1 will make this state of affairs permanent by putting the language in the Florida constitution. … Florida doesn’t need Amendment 1. Existing law gives Floridians the right to purchase or lease solar equipment and allows net metering, where utilities credit a retail rate to customers generating excess solar power that is returned to the electric grid. The constitutional changes in Amendment 1 are not in the best interest of Florida residents. Last Stand joins a large bipartisan group of organizations recommending a NO vote for Amendment 1.

If you want more solar power in Florida, vote “no” on Amendment 1. The proponents of Amendment 1 are for-profit corporations, whose purpose is to maximize profits by discouraging the installation of solar power. They have a big budget and you no doubt have seen their manipulative ads. Do not be deceived. Amendment 1 is anti-solar. My wife and I installed the first interconnected solar-electric system in the Florida Keys more than 15 years ago. It was expensive, but it has paid for itself. We hope others will have the opportunity to install solar power on their homes and businesses. If you want more solar power in Florida, vote “no” on Amendment 1. John Hammerstrom, Tavernier

n Nov. 8, Florida Keys residents will have a chance for their voice to be heard on the issue of a genetically modified mosquitoes (GMO) trial in either the Key Haven area or elsewhere in the Keys. Originally just a question for Key Haven residents (outside of Key West), the query is now on the ballot for all Monroe County voters to vote “yes” or “no” regarding the release of scientifically-altered mosquitoes in their area. The referendum is “non-binding” meaning it’s simply a survey for the Florida Keys Mosquito Control Board to gauge public sentiment. The referendum will read “trial in Monroe County” for all voters except Key Haven residents. Key Haven ballots will specifically ask if GMO mosquitoes should be released on Key Haven. The result may or may not affect Mosquito Control Board’s decision to release Oxitec’s GMO mosquitoes but it is not concerned about the release of MosquitoMate’s mosquitoes which are infected with a bacterium because they are not genetically altered insects.

Library: thanks for the help The Marathon Public Library would like to announce the end of another successful reading program, On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! I would like to thank the eight presenters who gave their time and energy to our kids during our weekly presentations. Betsy Lefler of Marathon Yacht Club shared information about the Middle Keys Community Sailing Program; Kelly Grinter of the Marathon Wild Bird Center; Lloyd Wilkerson and Coasty of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District 7 Division 13 and Bob Weisman of U.S. Coast Guard Aux and Marathon Services by the Sea; Keith Douglass of Boy Scouts of America Florida Sea Base in Islamorada; Stella Diaz of Truly Nolan in Key Largo; Ellie Splain of Reef Environmental Education Foundation in Key Largo; and Beth Pinkus with her puppets from the Dolphin Research Center. These wonderful presenters highlighted the fun and unique activities available to us in the Keys, because we live here! How cool is that? I would also like to thank our sponsors who made the reading program possible. First the local chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher sorority, donated funds for reading prizes which were supplied by Put Your Name On Anything. We had prizes donated by Aquarium Encounters, the Art Studio, Crane Point Hammock, Island Time Diner Ice Cream & Deli, and of course Sweet Savannah’s who donated cupcakes for the awards party. I must say that I had no one turn us down when asked for donations for our children. Thank you, Marathon businesses, we couldn’t do it without you. Finally I’d like to thank the Community Coop Preschool and Kreative Kids Christian Academy for attending the programs as part of their programming. We had good attendance at the presentations and lots of fun in the children’s room. Children who read over the summer will have a better chance of retaining skills learned and be ready for the challenges of the new school year. Remember, read lots, read often and come visit us at the library. Melody Dodamead, Children’s Librarian Assistant Marathon Public Library

Massage therapy distinctions I would like to make a few corrections to the “Triggers and Referrals” article in last week’s Health and Wellness insert. As a massage therapist, I am not allowed to diagnose any condition of any kind. It’s outside of my education and scope of practice. The job of the licensed massage therapist is to treat soft-tissue symptoms and possible underlying causes. It might look like semantics to a non-healthcare provider, but under the law it is a very clear distinction! Second, most massage therapists refer people who come to them for treatment as “clients.” If the person is seeking treatment under the direction of a doctor, then the term “patient” is applicable. I hope this clears up any misunderstandings that might have come up! Brandi Simpson, Licensed Massage Therapist, Marathon

ELECTION SEASON
MARATHON WEEKLY / OCTOBER 21, 2016
Incumbent Holly Raschein (R) faces challenger Dan Horton (D) in the race for State Representative, representing district 120. The district comprises all of the Keys, much of the uninhabited Everglades, and cities on the mainland including Homestead. Raschein was first elected in 2012, and Horton defeated Kevin Diaz (D) in the primary. The term length is two years.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE, District 120
DAN HORTON (D)
1. Please explain, in layman’s terms, the duties of the elected state representative and the responsibilities of the office. 2. If elected, which issue will be at the top of your list of properties? 3. How much time have you spent in the Keys during the past year? 4. What makes you more qualified than your opponent to hold this office?
1. As your representative, my duty is to advocate for this community in Tallahassee. To me, that means working with both Republicans and Democrats to solve issues such as restoring the flow of fresh water into the Florida Bay. It also means fighting against the big corporations and special interests that seek to further their own goals at the expense of the people of Florida. 2. My top priority is protecting our clean water. That starts with restoring the flow of fresh water into the Florida Bay. I was proud to sign the Now or Neverglades Declaration. Sadly, Holly continues to refuse to sign the Declaration. 3. A lot of time. In the past three months alone, we have driven nearly 10,000 miles. I have personally knocked on doors in every community from Key Largo to Key West. I am grateful to this community for its incredible support throughout our campaign. 4. I have refused to take money from big corporations and special interests like Big Sugar and Florida Power & Light (FPL). I will work for the people of this community, and not for the special interests that run Tallahassee by buying off our elected officials. I encourage you to check out our campaign finance records, compare them to Holly’s, and then decide for yourself.
HOLLY RASCHEIN (R), incumbent
1. My job is to represent the needs and issues of our unique district in Tallahassee and assist constituents in their interactions with state government. 2. We have a lot of issues we are tackling in the Keys, so it is hard to pick just one. My top three are water quality, insurance rates (both property insurance as well as the worker’s compensation rate increases the Legislature will be trying to control on behalf of our small businesses) and workforce housing. 3. I am a full-time resident of Key Largo. The only time I am not here is when I am fulfilling my duties as your state representative in Tallahassee. 4. I believe that the experience I bring to this office is my greatest asset. I worked for our two prior state representatives before being elected myself, so I have a long history and deep understanding of our local issues. I also know the legislative process and have built great relationships with the key players in Tallahassee. I know who to work with and how to get things done, which is how I have been able to deliver results on a variety of issues for our district over the past four years in office.

MARATHON WEEKLY / OCTOBER 21, 2016
The Facts Concerning Sunset Grille & Knight's Key I would like to provide some perspective and history on the development of Chappy’s Restaurant, now known as The Sunset Grille. At the time, Jim and Bettye Chaplin requested their second zoning change, I was Chairman of the Planning Committee for the City of Marathon and a Marathon City Councilman. Prior to the City of Marathon being incorporated, the Chaplin’s requested a zoning change from residential to mixed use commercial from the Monroe County Planning Committee. The requested zoning change was denied and the property remained zoned residential. Soon after the City was incorporated, the City of Marathon was operating under Monroe County’s zoning, comprehensive plan, and land use regulations. The City of Marathon was in the process of developing its own regulations and zoning which needed to be sent to the State for approval. Jim and Bettye Chaplin requested the same zoning change from the City of Marathon Planning Committee. There was a well-attended meeting at the Government Center where both sides presented their case for and against the requested zoning change. After all sides presented their arguments and the discussion closed, it was agreed by the entire Planning Committee/City Council (John Bartus, Jeff Pinkus, Randy Mearns, Pete Worthington and John Repetto) Since a zoning change would directly affect the residence of Knight's Key the Board felt that the decision to change the zoning should rest solely with the residents of Knight’s Key. Tracy Holder (resident of Knight’s Key) and Greg Coldiron (resident of Knight’s Key) and many other Knight’s Key residents spoke against the zoning change. There was no question that in the Board’s view, that the majority of Knight’s Key residents were against the zoning change. The decision of the Planning Committee/City Council was 5-0 against the zoning request. The property remained zoned residential. During the Planning Committee’s discussions, the comment was made that a local family restaurant could be an asset to the area if the residents would agree to the requested change of zoning. As chairman of the Planning Committee, I volunteered to see if we could broker a deal. I met several times with Tracy Holder and Greg Coldiron to see if there was common ground. To my surprise, both Tracy Holder and Greg Coldiron were not against the restaurant per se. They both thought a restaurant would be a good idea. Their fear was that they did not want the restaurant to be another
Holiday Isle with increased traffic, noise, etc. They wanted to be sure that the residential neighborhood stayed residential. After determining that there was a sliver of hope, I called Jim Chaplin and requested a meeting to discuss options. Jim was flabbergasted that there was even a remote possibility that the residents might consider changing their minds. Many meetings later, Jim understood the Knight’s Key concerns and agreed to make their required changes accordingly. Within a couple of days, we had our first face-to-face meeting at Cabana Breezes. Attending were Jim Chaplin, Greg Coldiron, Tracy Holder, Scott Janke (City Manager) John Herin (City Attorney) and me. The purpose was to iron out an agreement that both parties could live with. The list below summarizes the results of that meeting: Noise – It was agreed that there would be no amplified music regardless of time. It was further agreed that there be no music after 9:00PM (i.e., non-amplified guitar, etc.). Size of Facility – It was agreed that all employees and guests of the restaurant would be required to park on the restaurant property. Traffic – Jim Chaplin agreed to install two gates on Kyle Way to control the traffic. The gates would be installed and maintained by the restaurant. The City of Marathon would secure the necessary permits required to install the gates. Jim Chaplin owned the property where the two gates were to be located. The restaurant will have a pool. Enforcement – This probably was the hardest point to resolve. The Knight’s Key residents wanted assurances that the agreement would be honored. They also wanted the ability to enforce the agreement if the Chaplains failed to live up to the agreement. John Herin (City Attorney) assured the Knight’s Key residents that by listing all of the agreed items in both the deed restrictions and in the development agreement, that the Knight’s Key residents would be protected. John Herin indicated that any person can sue to enforce deed restrictions and the City has the ability to enforce the development agreement. We were almost there. Both sides left the table with the understanding that we could make this work. We now needed to sell this to the remaining Knight’s Key residents. Tracy Holder, Greg Coldiron, and I prepared a ballot which was hand delivered or delivered via registered mail to each Knight’s Key property owner asking if they would
support a zoning change if the Chaplin’s agreed to these conditions. Ballots were hand delivered by Jim Chaplin, Tracy Holder, and Greg Coldiron to those residents who were physically on Knight’s Key. Those property owners not physically on Knight’s Key were sent registered letters with the ballots. I do not remember the exact numbers, but there were approximately 37-38 properties on Knight’s Key. When the votes were counted we had 57% (I remember that number) in favor of the zoning change if all of the conditions were met. We had about 25% as no’s and the remaining did not respond. We had met the second hurdle of securing the approval of Knight’s Key residents. The ballots with signatures and votes were given to Cindy Ecklund (City Clerk) for her review and verification. I assume they are still available for review if the need were to arise. At the next Planning Committee/Council Meeting, the Chaplins presented their third request for the zoning change. Both Tracy Holder and Greg Coldiron spoke in favor of the requested change, conditioned on all of the previously mentioned agreement requirements. The Planning Committee/City Council passed the requested zoning change contingent upon incorporating the necessary language in the deed restrictions and in the sites development agreement/ Conditional Use Permit. Now the vote was 5-0 in favor of the zoning change. During the time the restaurant was operated as Chappy’s, the restaurant adhered to the agreement/ Conditional Use Permit. I, John Repetto, made a point to verify this myself. In conversations with both Tracy Holder and Greg Coldiron, they both indicated that the Chaplins honored their word. End of History, beginning of commentary -> Chappy’s was sold and became The Sunset Grille. Apparently, the deed restrictions and development agreement/Conditional Use Permit, as noted above, are not being adhered to, according to many Knight’s Key residents. On June 8, 2016, I was made aware that the current owners of The Sunset Grille wanted to change the development agreement/Conditional Use Permit. How can one side, unilaterally, change an agreement? An agreement is an agreement. If the City entertains any changes, as requested by the owners of The Sunset Grille, then the other side (Knight’s Key residents) must be given an opportunity to review, edit, and/or approve, or decline any chang-
Advertisement
es to the agreement currently existing. The residents of Knight’s Key voted their approval of the zoning change based upon a specific set of facts. The City of Marathon was completely involved in all aspects of the agreement. The City Manager (Scott Janke) was part of all meetings, after the initial one-on-one meetings. The City Attorney (John Herin) drafted the deed restrictions/ development agreement/Conditional Use Permit. The City Building Official, at the time, was also deeply involved in the creation of the this agreement. The City Council/Planning Committee were involved in all aspects. Acting as a City Councilman and Planning Committee member, I participated in all of the meetings. The City of Marathon brokered this deal between the Chaplins and the residents of Knight’s Key. I would assume that any changes to the development agreement would/could expose the City to legal issues. If the City allows this agreement to be modified, does this open a can of worms in potentially allowing all current and future development agreements/Conditional Use Permits to be modified at any time? Obviously, if a precedent is set by this case, any future agreement that the City wants to negotiate would be open to future modification, as the residents will know that the City has allowed and approved changes to an existing development agreement/Conditional Use Permit potentially without their input. It is my opinion, the City must reject any changes to the current development agreement/Conditional Use Permit, unless all parties affected have the same opportunity to participate in, provide input to, and mutually agree or disagree with, the changes. If mutual agreement by all affected parties cannot be reached, then the current agreement should stand without modification. The City should reject the pending request to change the development agreement/Conditional Use Permit without the approval of the residents of Knight's Key. Being a Monday morning quarterback, I can look back at the City’s efforts to please both parties and realize this was probably one of the worst decisions I made as a Councilman/Planning Committee member. I will be more than happy to make myself available at any time to discuss any of the above. John Repetto

SECOND TOKE IS THE CHARM?
Legalization of medical marijuana back on the ballot
I
n 2014, Amendment 2 legalizing medical marijuana failed although it garnered 58 percent of the vote but fell short of the 60 percent needed to become law. Revamped and rewritten, Amendment 2 on the Nov. 8 ballot will allow qualified physicians and caregivers to certify patients and issue IDs for medical marijuana use. The amendment now expands the definition of debilitating diseases, includes parental consent and limits caregiver patients. Voting “yes” on Amendment 2 would allow licensed physicians and caregivers to dispense marijuana prescriptions to patients with specific debilitating diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other serious diseases. An ID would allow patients to legally obtain marijuana from state regulated dispensaries. The Department of Health would regulate and limit the number of centers that cultivate and distribute marijuana. This Amendment would expand on the recently approved Florida House Bill 307 allowing terminally ill patients to use marijuana. HB 307 allowed Trulieve, a marijuana dispensary, to open in Tallahassee last July with more dispensaries pending throughout the state. The amendment’s definition of a “caregiver” remains vague. However, it does state it must be someone 21 years or older, who is licensed to help a patient. The licensing guidelines have yet to be written. The Department of
Health will limit the number of patients a caregiver may see and cap the amount of IDs they may hand out. Caregivers are also prohibited from consuming the marijuana dispensed to their patients. Also, Amendment 2 would require annual renewal for all patients and access to marijuana would not be limitless. Lastly, a minor would need parental or guardian consent in writing to obtain an ID. A “no” vote will not affect the existing Florida statutes. Aside from HB 307, there is the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014 which allows nonsmoked low-THC marijuana for qualified patients suffering from seizures and advanced cancer. So far no known patients have received such benefits since enacted Jan. 1, 2015.
An ID would allow patients to legally obtain marijuana from state regulated dispensaries.

arathon families gathered under a full moon for the Halloween Treat Fest on Oct. 15 at the Community Park. Costumed kids and adults watched “Hotel Transylvania 2” from blankets on the lawn and the bleachers. Before the show, candies and treats were given away, and Centennial Bank worked hard behind the grill to provide hot dogs. There was an arts and crafts table where kids painted their own “pumpkin” coconuts and decorated a variety of Halloween ornaments. Complimentary face painting and balloon animals were also available for all of Marathon’s little ghouls and goblins. The movie feature was the third time the large inflatable projector screen was used by the City of Marathon for a public showing. —Weekly Staff report

In a hotly contested race among fifth graders, lifelong Marathon resident and chocolate ice cream aficionado Aidan Gonzalez will serve as the Student Council President. Cupping 101 From ancient history to Olympian hickey

S
ports broadcasters were a little flabbergasted when large circular bruises appeared all over swimmer Michael Phelps’ back during the 2016 Summer Olympics. Turns out the famed Olympian is a fan of cupping, an alternate form of muscular therapy that has gone mostly unknown to the world, until now. The localized suction of a cup placed on skin creates a negative pressure says Angela Roth, of Marathon Acupuncture. “Rather than compressing the tissue, cupping lifts the tissues and allows for better circulation.” Roth is a licensed acupuncturist, certified in cupping, and a Marathon native. She’s been operating her practice in the Florida Keys since 2011. To better understand how cupping works, Roth broke the process down. Be mindful that the following
description of treatment is for a patient with middle and low back pain. “First, and most importantly, we talk and find out if cupping is even appropriate. It’s safety first. For some it can be a little too stimulating. It’s a great healing modality, but it’s not appropriate for everybody.” Part of Roth’s initial screening is getting to know her client’s medical history. She wants a complete understanding of prior injuries, medications, prosthetics, surgeries, etc. She explains the process before she oils the area
and begins applying the cups. “I ask that patients communicate any discomfort in the cup placing, because that means something is going on that maybe we don’t want, or Angela Roth, of Marathon it’s going to be too Acupuncture, uses strong of suction for cupping techthe area,” she said. niques on clients Twenty minutes for detox and pain relief.

later, the cups are removed. Roth then directs the toxins to lymph nodes using a single cup and minimized suction. “At that point we have a visual picture of where the areas of injury or concern are, because now they have varying degrees of darkness in the mark they leave behind. The more stagnation present at a spot, the darker the spot. The longer the spot stays, the deeper into the muscle tissue the injury.” In the follow up sessions, Roth asks to hear feedback about muscular congestion, mobility, and pain. “Muscular congestion can be toxins, lactic acid, old injuries, or simply from lifestyle habits, like frequent inactivity or sitting,” said Roth. “Congestion can show itself as tenderness, inflammation, and of course, pain.” A current client of Roth, Brandi Puckett, said cupping eased severe pain in her lumbar and hip following a car accident. “After she did the first cupping session, I felt major relief,” said Puckett. “For six months we used a combination of cupping and acupuncture to get mobility. I’m almost at 100 percent now where before I was at about 20 percent.”

Spooktacular haunts Switlik halls Annual Halloween Carnival Returns GABRIEL SANCHEZ

n Sunday, Oct. 23, Stanley Switlik Elementary school will hold its annual Spooktacular Halloween Carnival from 1 to 4 p.m. This year the carnival will have a cakewalk, square dancing, live music, crafts, bounce house and bounce obstacle course, dunk tank, and costume parade. Following the parade, there will be three awards given out for costumes. The three categories are most original costume, best homemade costume, and scariest costume. The Spooktacular Halloween Carnival will also features dozens of booths where kids play games of skill and chance to
win trinkets. Adults are encouraged to check out the silent auction, with great packages on offer. Kids can take turns trying to dunk Principal Unke, teacher Stacy Couch, Mayor Mark Senmartin, Sheriff Rick Ramsey, Coach Andre Garvey, and Coach Arno Silva in the dunk tank. “All the money raised in a year’s time goes back to the school to be distributed to departments that need it,” said Kate Koler, who sits on the Halloween carnival committee. In prior years, funds have been used to finance field trips, purchase school supplies, and procure new hardware for Stanley Switlik’s media department. The carnival is the parent-teacher organization’s (PTO) largest fundraiser of the year. Planning for the carnival starts at the beginning of the school year.
Trick or Treating in Marathon
T
rick or treating in Marathon is a well-established tradition. Parents and their “littles” (toddlers and babies) head to Gulfside Village to gather loot from the shop owners and other organizations that set up in the U-shaped shopping plaza. It’s very safe, well-lit and offers just the right amount of excitement for the younger children. It’s set for Monday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The rest of the town heads to the neighborhood behind the airport. Beginning in the afternoon, law enforcement will set up roadblocks, allowing only residents with an ID showing a neighborhood address to drive to their homes. The rest
of the vehicles will be directed to the west end of the airport runway where the gates will be open. Shuttles will be provided, but cars will not be allowed to park overnight; they will be towed. The city is also providing trash cans and port-a-potties to keep the streets clean. The City of Marathon is also collecting bags of wrapped candy to distribute to the homeowners in the neighborhood behind the airport. Candy can be dropped at City Hall, 9805 Overseas Hwy. For more information about giving candy or receiving candy, call 305-743-0033. — Weekly staff report

ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE
Annual ride is one of biggest Key West events on calendar KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com
S
tarting on Sunday afternoon, and leaving a four-mile trail of horror, the zombies will be taking over the streets of Key West from Fort East Martello to Duval Street. Zombies and zombie hunters will creep through Key West on two wheels for the sixth annual bike ride. What started as a couple hundred people six years ago under the creative and creepy direction of WeCycle owner Evan Haskell and WonderDog Studio’s Marky Pierson, has grown into one of the biggest events the island offers. (Last year, it’s estimated there were more than 8,500 walking dead out searching for fresh brains.) The family-friendly event starts with a kid’s zone, DJ Bell, live mural painting, food, drinks and face and body painting from 2 to 6 p.m. at Fort East Martello. At about 6 p.m., the zombies set off. “The Zombie Bike Ride embodies the creative culture and spirit the Florida Keys are known for,” said Key West Art and Historical Society Executive Director Michael Gieda at Fort East Martello. “We are happy to support the event by offering the
Fort as the event’s starting point and family-friendly pre-party.” When the zombies leave the fort, they will be taking up all four South Roosevelt lanes to travel west toward Atlantic Boulevard, passing Higgs Beach onward to Duval Street. ZombieFest takes place between the 100 to 300 blocks of Duval Street with official parties listed at zombiebikeride.com.
Register for the Zombie Bike Ride ($5) online at zombiebikeride.com. The registration fee enters cyclists into special drawings and supports parade costs, including motorcycle police escorts, trash and recycling, permits, and donations to Montessori Children’s School and The Key West Art and Historical Society. The founders encourage families to participate in the ride (with protective helmets for children) and stress that participants do not need to do the entire route. There will be no parking available for vehicles at the Fort.
Zombies will be taking over the streets of Key West on Sunday, Oct. 23 from Fort East Martello. Titti Myhrberg, left, Dave Erwin, Nicolas Smith, Marika Smith, and Freda Erwin participated in 2015.

here is more than one way to get stoned in the Keys, but a favorite among locals is fishing for stone crab. Season opened on Oct. 15, so below are some rules and tips to get stoned legally. The minimum size of a claw is 2 ¾ inches, measured from the inside of the knuckle joint to the lower tip of the immovable claw. Regular citizens are permitted five recreational traps per person, or they can catch them with a dip net. In no way, shape, or form can a stone crabber puncture, hurt, hook, or injure the crab’s body — stone crab might be the Florida Keys’ most important renewable resource since they regenerate new claws to replace the ones on the dinner plate. Bag limit is one gallon of claws per person, or two gallons per vessel, whichever is less. Egg bearing crabs have orange egg sacks affixed underneath their bodies — do not take the claw off egg-bearing stone crab; it’s illegal. The easiest way to get stoned is to buy a trap kit from a local store like Cudjoe Sales or Marathon Lumber and Building Supply. Kits run about $20 per trap, and will come with everything to get wet, except the concrete. Trap size is 2 by 2 by 2 feet and can be made of wood, wire, or plastic. Most locals prefer plastic traps for durability, bait them with a pig foot (yes, you read that correctly) and place them in grassy spots next to sandy spots. Check them out every 10-14 days.
For regular citizens, the “R” must be visible on all “R”ecreational buoys. Most buoys are white, but some people decorate their buoys, and that is allowed as long as the “R” is still visible. Each recreational trap must also have trap owner’s information — name and address — affixed or etched into the trap. The traps have a biodegradable slat that will allow the stone crab to escape should a boat take the buoy for a ride, or a storm washes the whole trap away. Successful trappers say a good catch is dependent on a good “pull” — clean the throat of the trap from debris growing on it with a couple passes of your hand every time you check the harvest. Once a trap is pulled, a quickhand or tongs will help wrangle the wily beast before the claws are removed. Legally both claws, if of size, can be removed, but some leave the smaller one to help the crab defend itself, and collect food faster. The renewable delicacy don’t need its claws to eat, but can eat more and regenerate the claw faster with one. To see a video on how to remove the claws, visit myfwc.com. And, luckily, for anyone wanting to get stoned, season runs through May 15.

MAYDAE, MAYDAE Sinking Grades ≠ Abandon Ship
It’s going to attract more kids, and our influence can grow as well,” said Kirwan. “At this point, we’d like to get the younger kids involved sooner so we can get their grades where they need to be at an earlier age.” Kirwin, a Marathon native, says he saw a need for this program when students would approach him wanting to play for the team, but couldn’t because of academic obstacles. He previously headed the baseball league for the Marathon Youth Club. “Maybe more one-on-one time would help out certain students. They need to know if they put real effort they’ll get what they deserve,” said Kirwan. Cataldo and Kirwan both plan on being at the forefront of assisting kids, but are soliciting help from other leaders in the community.

n Saturday, Oct. 22, the Marathon Association for Youth Development & Athletic Excellence (MAYDAE) will be holding a fundraiser event at Sunset Bar and Grill. The student-centered non-profit is hosting a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and will be accepting donations to fund academic initiatives for student-athletes that runs from 4 to 8 p.m. The organization’s goal is to “promote mental, physical, and emotional growth for students through athletic and academic achievement.” While less than a year old, MAYDAE has lofty goals. Predominately centered in youth sports, MAYDAE is seeking to expand their influence into improving their athlete’s personal situation through academics. The organization is currently looking for professional and motivated preceptors to assist in mentoring its student-athletes. “I really want to expand in to helping make these kids more productive members of society and productive people,” said cofounder, Neil Cataldo. “Beyond the usual fundraising, I’d like to able to provide scholarships, laptops for kids, and potentially send kids to charter schools.” “We want to emphasize social and academic initiatives, whether it be through mentors, or just involving the kids in community activities with different people,” said Cataldo. “Our kids need to know the real value of community, how to work for things, and how to handle themselves in different social environments they may not have in their normal everyday life.” Cataldo is teaming up with Marathon High School assistant basketball coach, Sean Kirwan, to grow MAYDAE’s outreach. “We want to grow the athletics program to include more sports.
“We want to be competitive in sports, but that’s not our main goal, we want to see them become better young people and to realize their potential.” — Sean Kirwan, co-founder of MAYDAE

Craving a hint of fall?
F
all is my favorite season. I grew up going to apple orchards and pumpkin patches, baking pumpkin and apple pies, sipping cider next to a fireplace, and going for walks to find the most radiant red, orange and yellow leaves. But in the Florida Keys when the temperatures are pushing 90 degrees, it’s hard to think about enjoying any of these things. If like me, you’re craving a hint of fall, here are a few tips to bring a little fall to you. LEAH MAKI • Wet your whistle. Head to your favorite coffee shop for a pumpkin spiced latte or better yet, indulge is a fashion-obin a white chocolate cinnamon mocha from Café Moka sessed style Keys in Tavernier. This decadent treat will truly awaken your blogger, formerly fall senses. If coffee isn’t your thing, opt for something from Minnesoa little lighter. You can find some great Octoberfest ta. Her current infatuations and pumpkin ales this time of year. Florida Keys Brewinclude statement ing Co in Islamorada offers a large selection of beers pieces, dramatic on tap including a number of fall themed selections heels, red lipstick sure to wet your whistle. and vintage • Fall accents. The best fall accents add warmth to costume jewelry. Visit LeahsFabuyour home. Add a vase of yellow sunflowers or colorful lousFinds.com wildflowers to liven up your room. Apples are another for more of her fall staple that are easy to decorate with. Add them musings. to a vase on your center table or foyer, or assemble them into a large bowl on your counter. Another easy way to get into the season is to pick out a handful of gourds, colorful squash and pumpkins at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. My favorite are the white albino pumpkins that seem to blend better with our tropical landscaping. • Update your space. When you’re cooling off in the air conditioning, a light throw might be just what you need to snuggle in. This is the perfect time of year to add fall-themed throws or accent pillows to your living space. Fall tones are not only the traditional orange and brown, instead consider adding deep purples, magenta or dark teal to warm up your space. • Fire pit. The best part about fall in South Florida is that the weather starts cooling down for us to finally enjoy more outdoor living. Outdoor fire places, fire pits, and other fire features are some of the fastest growing trends in outdoor living spaces. There is just something mesmerizing about the dancing flames and wood burning elements, the smoky aromas and crackling sounds of the fire that make it feel like fall. Add a fire pit to your outdoor space for instant charm and warmth in the cooler hours once the sun goes down. • A new jack o’ lantern. Instead of carving a pumpkin, embrace your tropical locale and opt for a pineapple Jack o’ lantern — great for table décor for a dinner party or a children’s activity with built-in snack. These silly and spirited little guys are darling but don’t leave them out too long as they are perishable.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
KEYS QUEEN OF HEARTS
Kristen Livengood Candidate for Fantasy Fest Queen
L
ike a true Queen, Kristen Livengood takes her bloodlines seriously. Born and raised in the Keys, no one is more determined, more tenacious or more vivacious campaigning for “Queen” of this year’s Fantasy Fest and giving back to her community. Just 32, Livengood has already established her reign in the Keys as a feature writer extraordinaire for The Keys Weekly Newspapers. She helps give locals a voice from Key West to Key Largo making the newspapers locally grown and loved. Even the king of all media, The New York Times, has printed four of her features putting her in the big leagues — but she is still a small town girl at heart. “Keyswide, AIDS Help gives around 400 people some sort of assistance like medicine, housing, prevention, awareness and more,” said Livengood. “If I can show my daughters that everyone can do something a little bigger than themselves for the good of their community, then I’m doing something right.” Supported by her husband Travis, “the most understanding husband in the whole wide world,” and her two daughters, Summer, 9, and Marina, 5, Livengood shows all of us the beauty of our community inside and out — whether it be on the water boating and spearfishing, on writing about our unique residents or raising awareness for those in need. Her energy and sense of adventure is limitless. Livengood is also a two-time “That’s What She Shot” spearfishing tournament winner, a Take Stock In Children mentor, is presently in Leadership Monroe and proudly claims she was dead last in 2014’s 7 Mile Bridge Run. Donate to AIDS Help and Livengood’s campaign before coronation on Friday, Oct. 21 at ahmonroe.org. Or come to the royal coronation party. For tickets go to ahi.ticketleap. com. or call 305-296-6196. 1. Full Name? Kristen “K-10” Livengood 2. Worst nickname? In fourth grade at DARE, someone said “take a bite out of Grimes,” instead of crime. When I met my husband and heard his last name, I told him I would marry him one day whether he liked it or not…Grimey no more. 3. Who is your arch nemesis? The 7 Mile Bridge. We have a love-hate relationship. 4. What is your most useless hidden talent? Snowboarding. 5. Who is your celebrity crush and why? QMitch Jones at 801 Bingo. What’s your funniest Keys story? I told someone that one day I want to sail around the world shooting fish and catching lobster. He said I should get a cat because they are more stable. I said, “but a dog has four legs, too.” Then I realized he was talking about a catamaran. 8. Which super hero character is your spirit animal? Michelle Maxwell. A big cup of class with a sidecar of sarcasm and a cape made of terry cloth adorning a monkey. 9. What is your nerdiest passion? Ha, Pokémon Go. It’s the only time I go to the “gym.” Team Valor – woot! Three months ago, I had no idea what a Pikachu was, now I am well versed in Poké lingo. To think I downloaded the app to play with my kids. 10. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? I watch a lot of “Naked and Afraid,” I don’t need anything to survive in the wild, including clothes. 11. If invisible what would you do? Use the restroom in peace without two little girls barging in, EVERY SINGLE TIME, asking me random questions like “will you get me some milk.” Kid, that can’t wait 45 seconds?
12. What was your first thought this morning? I need a nap. 13. Favorite guilty pleasure? Having someone come clean my house and letting my husband think I did it and I’m super woman. I have to ask her, please don’t make the beds, he’ll know it wasn’t me. Yes, babe, I can do it all. 14. If you could change the world, what would you do? Stop world hunger – is this answer middle-aged Miss America enough? 15. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating (I think you mean drinking)…who walks in and sits next to you? Ernest Hemingway, buys me a beer, and wins me over with his womanizing ways. Hall pass, Travis!
Finish these sentences... 16. Don’t drink the water here…drink alcohol instead, upstairs at The Bull, while hula hooping, naked. This is how people get pregnant. 17. My autobiography would be titled… The Exhausting Life of Kristen. 18. At the end of a rainbow there is… November. November, as my husband calls it. He said don’t even think about saying yes to anything for a while. But, what a boring life that would be. 19. Key West ... chickens are not as cool as my chickens, Little Pecka and Pippa. 20. When I go, I will go …. Reluctantly. Once you break the seal... (Are we talking about using the bathroom here, Hays?)

PARTY WITH A PURPOSE
Here’s a week of feel good parties
he Coconut Castaways do it all the time – they call it partying with a purpose – where they get together, drink good drinks, sell raffles, and raise money for a local nonprofit. This week is filled with crazy activities, and although there is a ton of stuff going on, some of the parties do double duty raising funds for those in the community in need of some extra funds.
SATURDAY NIGHT October 22 The annual Goombay two-day festival celebrates Bahamian-American contributions to the City of Key West and includes Bahamian food, arts and culture, Junkanoo parade and more. The event hosted by Bahama Village Community Coalition showcases the talents of the Gerald Adams Steel Pan Band, Bahama Village Music Program, KWHS Conchettes, Bahama Village Social Club, and more.
FRIDAY NIGHT October 21 Fantasy Fest King and Queen Coronation Ball at 6 p.m. at Casa Marina. This event raises money for AIDS Help and is the culmination of the eight-week-long fundraising campaign by the four candidates vying for a king and queen crown.
SUNDAY NIGHT October 23 King Neptune’s Curse and the Spirits of the Long Dead from 8 to 10 p.m. at U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ingham. The haunted ship brings in money for the upkeep of the historic ship permanently parked at Truman Waterfront.
THURSDAY October 28 Fat Tuesday Pink Party at 9 p.m. The annual party at 305 Duval St. raises money for American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of the Florida Keys. TUESDAY NIGHT October 25 The Florida Keys SPCA Cocktails for Animal Tails from 7 to 10 p.m. at Rick’s on Duval Street. Attendees are encouraged to party like an animal as Rick’s eight bars are transformed into different animal kingdoms around the world. There will be a costume contest for the best dressed party animal.
MONDAY EVENING October 24 Heroes and Villains 5K at 6 p.m. from Southernmost Beach Resort. This is a Theme Run puzzle medal event and this race is benefiting the Key West High School’s track and cross country team and Care Camps for kids with cancer.
WEDNESDAY EVENING October 27 Pet Masquerade at 5:30 p.m. at Casa Marina benefiting Lower Keys Friends of Animals. In its 32nd year of fundraising. What started as a parking lot parade has morphed into one of the premier official Fantasy Fest events. Also, Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar and Restaurant Blue Party at 8 p.m. at 320 Grinnell St. benefits Reef Relief. Surfers and reef conservation go together like burgers and beer. Swing by the official Blue Party at Lucy’s and help raise money for the local wave breakers, the reef.
Wear a pink bra, save ta-ta’s and possibly win a $500 bar tab with the best pink costume. Also, the Smallest Parade in the World starts at 5 p.m. at Waterfront Brewery benefiting MARC House for the mentally disabled citizens in the community. In its second year, the parade will only be “bigger” and better than the last!

THE REAL STORY ON SUNSET GRILLE By John Kotch Sunset Grille, Owner Since purchasing the Sunset Grille we have made every effort to be contributing members to our community. We provide jobs to 100 staff members, tax revenue to the City, promote Marathon to visitors, as well as donate to local charities and non-profit organizations. However, as some of you may know in recent years we have unfortunately been subjected to attacks by certain members of our community for their own personal gain. When we refused to pay the amounts demanded they took us to Court. Thankfully, the Court ruled in favor of Sunset Grille. Unfortunately, that did not stop the harassment. Our adversaries then sought to use a noise restriction to force us to pay them. The Sunset Grille has had live music since it opened more than 7 years ago, without any problems from the city or anyone else. In our opinion, our adversaries have never been concerned about traffic or noise or neighborhood character- they have only been concerned about personal profit. Recently, a black sedan pulled up to our restaurant and dropped off a gift bag with the following note and a “Joker” hat. The note is printed in its entirety below. This was delivered by an employee of one of our adversaries. As you can read it supports the above story including “Ah, $ $ $ $ what might have been.” We are trying to operate a successful business for our community. We are only asking to play by the same rules that apply to every other business in Marathon. We need your support and assistance. Please come out and support us at the next City Council meeting on October 25.

Castaway
S
herry Minche, also known as just “Red,” moved to Marathon fulltime last January to escape the cold northern winters. Beforehand, she was a seasonal resident for that past six years. “I love the area, the weather, and the people,” she said while shaking up a new cocktail just as vibrant as her red hair. Made with citron vodka, Red Molly also includes fresh strawberry puree and muddled basil. “I just made it,” she said “It’s unique, but still fruity and citrusy and has the ‘pow’ from the basil. That makes it a little different.” She said she loves working at Castaway, but awaits the day when she will honestly not have to work and be independently wealthy so she can spend her days hanging out at Sombrero and Bahia Honda beaches sipping on cocktails. In her spare time, she likes “researching” other liquors and reads a lot. Her recommendation is “Stones of Summer.” She said the Red Molly goes well with the King of the Jungle lionfish sushi roll or the professor’s pasta filled with tomatoes, mushrooms, and garlic. The latter is a vegetarian pasta she makes hearty with the addition of chicken. Castaway is located at the end of 15th Street, oceanside, in Marathon. Follow the signs.

Church Ladies with Typewriters More actual passages taken directly from church bulletins…
T
hank God for church ladies with typewriters. I do believe that God has an amazing sense of humor, as evidenced by these sentences that JOHN actually appeared in church bulletins BARTUS or were announced is a City Council at church services. member and a Thanks again to my former Mayor of friend Mac from the the City of MaraUK for these! thon. John is also a musician who • The Fasting & performs around Prayer conference town at various includes a meal. establishments. • Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children. • The sermon this morning: “Jesus Walks on the Water.” The sermon tonight: “Searching for Jesus.” • Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. • Don’t let worry kill you off — let the Church help! • Miss Charlene Mason sang, “I Will Not Pass This Way Again,” giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. • For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs. • Next Thursday there will be try-outs for the choir. They need all the help they can get. • Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. • A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. • At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What Is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice. • Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.
• Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. • The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment, and gracious hostility. • Pot Luck Supper Sunday at 5 p.m. — prayer and medication to follow. • The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. • This evening at 7 p.m. there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. • The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. • Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. Please use the back door. • The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in the Church basement Friday at 7 p.m. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. • Weight Watchers will meet at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. And this one just about sums them all up… • The Associate Minister unveiled the church’s new campaign slogan last Sunday: “I Upped My Pledge — Up Yours!” ••••• John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, tonight (Friday) with Jade Storm at Postcard Inn in Islamorada, and most Saturday nights at the Key Colony Inn. www. johnbartus.com

THE CIRCLE OF CARE
MARATHON WEEKLY / OCTOBER 21, 2016
What women need to know in the Keys HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
Step 1
Step 4
Have a clinical breast exam These can be performed by a doctor or nurse practitioner at either an OB/GYN office or clinic.
A positive finding of cancer Consult with your primary doctor and oncologist about the right course of treatment. Options include lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, total mastectomy and breast reconstruction can all be done at both hospitals. Chemotherapy and radiation are available at 21st Century Oncology Center in Key West. Mariners Hospital in the Upper Keys also has an oncology suite where chemotherapy can be delivered according to an oncologist’s plan. Many Keys patients travel to the mainland for further treatment. After treatment, women should continue to regularly visit their doctors for further checks, including clinical breast exams.
If the patient is between the ages of 50 and 64, she may be eligible for the Florida Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, FBCCP. In Key West, this can only be done at Womankind; in Marathon, women can be screened for the program at Community Health Center of South Florida (CHI). The patient is given a prescription to go to Fisherman's Hospital for a free mammogram, diagnostic mammogram and biopsy if needed. The program also pays for surgery and/or chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery.
Step 2
Step 3A
Get a mammogram Mammograms are available at every Keys hospital. Both Lower Keys Medical Center and Fishermen’s Hospital also have ultrasound equipment, and LKMC will offer 3D mammography in 2017. The hospitals often run specials during October for women without insurance, offering mammograms for a low-cost, flat fee. The Zonta Club of Key West and the Zonta Club of Marathon also offer vouchers for free mammograms for women who qualify. There are also diagnostic centers that provide mammograms, such as Mammography of Key West or the mobile HerScan. Check to see if the service includes a reading from a certified radiologist, or if that requires an extra payment.
No findings Whew! Schedule next year’s mammogram.
Step 3B Abnormal results. Women who have been diagnosed with abnormalities should schedule further testing as soon as possible at the local hospital. The hospitals offer diagnostic mammograms conducted by an on-site radiologist. Biopsies can be performed during an ultrasound, and results will be sent to the patient and her doctor within 24 hours.
