Key West was infested by Zombies last Sunday night; nearly 10,000 roamed the streets freely and unabashedly. They had a casual and festive manner as they flaunted their wounds, oozed blood and gave “Project Runway” a season’s worth of new fashion ideas. We asked local zombies …

WHERE’S T THE CANDY?
Trick or treating in Key West
here are certain hot spots for “trick or treating” in Key West guaranteed to fill the kiddies’ bags with a plethora of candy. Key Haven has always been a local family favorite away from the hustle and bustle of the main island. Or the highly decorated and spookiest party scene in New Town, the “Avenues” — Staples, Harris and Fogarty avenues. New to the scene, Peary Court will host its second year, located off of White Street in Old Town, making it easier on downtown families to stroll a secluded neighborhood. Oh, and it will be on Monday, Oct. 31 — that’s not always a given due to the conflicts with the big parade. — Weekly Staff report

ELECTION SEASON
KEY WEST WEEKLY / OCTOBER 28, 2016
When District 39’s boundaries were finally approved in early 2016, after a protracted legal battle, incumbent Dwight Bullard was no longer eligible to represent the area that covers the Florida Keys, Everglades and Homestead. Anitere Flores (R) and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D) are challenging one another for the seat in 2016. Previously, Flores was a state senator representing District 37. Before that, she was a state representative. Mucarsel-Powell is a political newcomer with a background in fundraising and higher education.
STATE SENATE, District 39
Anitere Flores (Republican)
1. What personal experience qualifies you to be a state senator? 2. How much time have you spent in the Keys during the past year? 3. Is Florida Keys’ drinking water at risk from nuclear waste generated by Turkey Point? 4. What can the state legislature do to increase the number of charter schools in Florida Keys? Improve education alternatives?
1. As a wife of a small business owner, mother of two young boys, and someone who was born and raised in South Florida, I have a personal stake in ensuring the best for our community. As a State Senator for six years, the leadership position I have secured ensures more funding for the Keys such as the Keys Stewardship Act. 2. The Keys have essentially become my second home over the last year. I’ve spent more time here than I could measure, attending and speaking at chamber events, festivals, and forums from Key Largo to Key West. 3. I took the statewide lead in convening a special meeting in Homestead to hear directly from Florida Power & Light, regulators, and concerned citizens. FPL now has three years to stop adding to the problem and up to 10 years to completely retract it. While drinking water in the Florida Keys is not currently at risk, I will continue to be your voice in Tallahassee to ensure our water quality is safe. 4. As the mother of a second grader and a pre- kindergartener, I understand the need of having quality education that’s accessible to the families of our community. Parents should be empowered to make the best education decisions for their children. I will continue to be a strong advocate for quality education options.
Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (Democrat)
1. I am not a career politician. I am a mother, wife, and a small businesswoman. I have been involved in many community initiatives and have devoted my career to development and strategic support for nonprofits. I will fight for a fully funded education system, for a government that protects the rights of all, for an environment that preserves and protects our land, sea and drinking water. Finally, I am a strong advocate for common sense gun laws. 2. I have spent a great deal of time in the Keys since moving to Miami more than 20 years ago. I have a home in Islamorada and am a registered voter from the Keys. I think what you are really asking is: Given the new district lines, how well do I know the strengths and challenges that exist in the Keys? I have spent countless hours talking with and listening to voters. I have participated in many forums where the critical issues have been discussed and I am eager to learn more. 3. Absolutely. I will fight to protect our drinking water and hold FPL accountable for their pollution. 4. I am deeply concerned about the money siphoned from non-charter schools to charter schools. I am adamantly opposed to for-profit public education. I am appalled by the legislature’s actions around education, specifically related to funding. Our schools must be fully funded.

If approved by voters, the amendment takes effect January 1, 2017. This amendment would change the current legislative language from providing tax breaks to just the surviving spouses of first responders or members of the mili-
tary who were killed in the line of duty. The new legislature would include first responders who are permanently or totally disabled in the line of duty be granted property tax exemptions on homestead property. • CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ARTICLE VII, SECTION 6 ARTICLE XII Tax Exemption for Totally and Permanently Disabled First Responders would revise the homestead tax exemption that may be granted by counties or municipalities for property with just value less than $250,000 owned by certain senior, low-income, long-term residents to specify that just value is determined

KEY WEST WEEKLY / OCTOBER 28, 2016
Incumbent Tim Root is facing off against Carol Schreck for seat 3 of the Key West Utility Board. Root, a general contractor, stresses that his background in construction and infrastructure helps keep building projects’ costs down for energy customers. Schrek, aide to Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers, says her background in science and engineering will help the board focus on new science and technology.
KEY WEST UTILITY BOARD MEMBER, GROUP 3
TIM ROOT (incumbent)
How can Keys Energy Services incorporate renewable energy sources, at a higher cost, against the lower cost of traditional energy? In our April board meeting, I voted to move forward with our partnership in generation with Florida Municipal Power Agency to install large solar arrays at or near our fossil fuel generating plants. This will save infrastructure costs by using existing supply lines and infrastructure to distribute power to all the municipal utilities they serve. This distributes the cost over a broader number of customers to spread the initial costs of the solar development plan. This will also cut our carbon footprint by using solar generation on clear days, and fossil fuel plants for backing up our needs in nights and bad weather. Are Keys Energy System employees’ and board members’ salaries fair? Why or why not? Keys Energy employees are some of the most dedicated and committed employees I have had the pleasure to work with. The teamwork and leadership shown by all is an example of how all utilities should be run. The reliability of service is one of the best in the state. Our rates are the lowest of any island community on the east coast and our customer service is five-star rated. We on the board serve as board of directors for Keys Energy Systems, just as for-profit utility companies have their board. However, the board of directors for stock owned utilities such as FPL are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars per year with benefits and bonuses. Election to this board does pay about $19,000 per year. It is a great challenge to serve the ratepayers and to provide fiduciary responsibility in budget reviews.
CAROL SCHRECK
How can Keys Energy Services incorporate renewable energy sources, at a higher cost, against the lower cost of traditional energy? Solar energy is expensive only because it is the enemy of Florida’s investor-owned utilities; renewable technologies threaten their control and bottom line. We need someone on the Board with the education, technical background and fortitude to fight for how we will power our future. Renewable energy will only come with changes in state and federal legislation, a forwardthinking KEYS Board policy, and installations in our own backyards. Are Keys Energy System employees’ and board members’ salaries fair? Why or why not? Our workforce is the backbone of our community. Keys’ businesses, governments and utilities need to support the health and security of our workforce, especially in light of current affordability issues. Specific to Keys Energy, we need to ensure ratepayers are getting the best bang for their buck from staff and board members through performance, attendance and general success in carrying out KEYS’ mission. Qualified and hardworking Board members and staff are fundamental to our future service and power reliability.

Decisions still to be made
Lower Keys Chamber supports Batty’s comments
at Truman Waterfront Park As many know, there is a lot of infrastructure work being done at Truman Waterfront Park right now with drainage, leveling, roads, curbs, sidewalks and more, and the area is starting to make a shape. Part of this work can be best viewed from higher up on the deck of the USCGC Ingham, moored at the Quay inner mole right across from Building 103. But right now at the park there are five major issues to be settled: 1) How to keep the present design or redesign Building 103 so that it will be sufficiently functional and revenue-producing while satisfying HARC’s disputed claim that it is a historical building; 2) Renovate or demolish what is known as the Police Athletic League (PAL) building, which is also where the Police Department’s Horse Stables and horses are; 3) Keep the present recreation field, Gilleran Field, (aka the Petronia Street Field or Fort Street Field), as is or build townhouses or whatever there; 4) Leave as much area as possible for open space at Parcel C, which is right across the street from where the amphitheater will be located; 5) Whether or not people want the park to be truly an actual Key West park or a building development (or to be perfectly fair, a partial park/ development). Although I am a Truman Waterfront Park Advisory Board member, my comments here are as a private citizen, and a big part of my goal for the Waterfront area is for future generations of Key Westers and our guests to be able to enjoy the wide open spaces of a park in the year 2066 and beyond. Ben Volpian, Key West
‘One Human Family’ celebrates 16 years
On Oct. 17, 2000, Key West’s groundbreaking “One Human Family” resolution proclaimed “all people are our equals,” and urged everyone to “grow beyond the artificial limitations of racism, nationalism, sexism, classism, monotheism, prejudice, homophobia and every other illusion used to try to separate us all from being equal.” One Human Family is about eliminating barriers between ALL people everywhere; and Key West is the first city to declare that all people are entitled to equal rights, dignity and respect. Since then, OHF has been endorsed by Monroe County, the Conch Republic, Carnival Cruise Lines, General Motors, AFL-CIO, One Island Family (UU) Church, Rotary Clubs, Simon Wiesenthal Center, Holocaust Museums, scores of other organizations, universities and businesses across the country. As our island’s wonderful philosophy is carried around the world (on more than 2.5 million free stickers) President Obama said: “We must find a way to reconcile our ever-shrinking world with its ever-growing diversity — diversity of thought, of culture, and of belief. In short, we must find a way to live together as one human family.” And, the Dalai Lama wrote: “We are all members of one human family. This understanding is very important, especially now that the world is becoming smaller and smaller.” Sixteen years in, we invite everyone to join us in promoting unity, equal rights, dignity and respect for all people worldwide. Future generations innately will understand our unity if we guide them. Take some free stickers with you on trips — or send them to friends and loved ones. They are great to include in holiday cards. Tell people what One Human Family means to you. With “One Human Family” in our hearts and our actions, we are working together to make the world of tomorrow a better place. THANK YOU, KEY WEST, for being a living example and progressive model that we can all live as one! JT Thompson, founder One Human Family Educational Foundation (all-volunteer and non-profit) OneHumanFamily.info
The Board of Directors of the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize Key West Utility Board Chair Peter Batty for his recent comments regarding the fact that the Lower Keys should be represented on the Utility Board. Batty's statement that likened our situation to "taxation without representation" was exact and to the point. The Lower Keys have historically been customers with no voice. The City of Key West has very different circumstances than the Lower Keys, which is more rural in nature. Having Board members who advocate on behalf of the Lower Keys will provide a firsthand perspective on decisions that affect the area from the Seven Mile Bridge through Stock Island. The Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce encourages the Utility Board to work toward ensuring that at least two of the five seats on its board are filled with representatives from the Lower Keys. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the Utility Board to put this policy in place. Steve Miller, chair Business Advisory Committee Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce

L
ucy Stevens found inspiration for her latest paintings at, of all places, a bus stop; but maybe not so unusual given her vibrant and quirky sense of imagery. Drawn to the idea of people caught for a brief moment huddled together, waiting for their next destination, felt rich with symbolism and pictorial possibilities for Stevens. At a bus stop there are different types of characters, all shapes, sizes and color, momentarily suspended in time together. “It’s so temporary — that particular pattern of people,” said Stevens who has created large 4- by 5-foot canvases filled with geometric colors, shapes and hints of people. The paintings feel fleeting and disjointed but with a beauty rising from the chaos. Using acrylic, oil pastels, colored pencils, and collage, Stevens weaves intricate arrangements of shapes, bright colors, and with hints of figures throughout. Written words punctuate thematically, reminiscent of billboard and advertisements flashing through the throng of riders. Her style is expressionistic, capturing the moment with broad, vivid strokes and layered arrangements. A former writer, journalist and English professor, Stevens has found a different language with her paint-
ing. “I don’t think in words anymore,” said Stevens. Without any formal training in painting, Stevens has always been drawn to art with years of doodling in her journalism notebooks. She takes inspiraLucy Stevens tion from the French painter Jean Dubuffet who created, art brut, or “outsider art” that is nontraditional, “raw” and “rough.” She said she wasn’t discouraged by her lack of formal education in painting but rather encouraged to find a style and feel for her work all her own. Only 10 years in and Stevens said she is more and more drawn to her craft. “The thing is, I didn’t think I was an artist,” said Stevens. “I thought that you were only an artist if you could draw things that looked like how they look.” Stevens will be in her third residency at the Studios of Key West this winter. Previously, she has shown work at Lucky Street Gallery and looks forward to presenting her large-scale pieces with this show.
‘Recent Works’ opens on Thursday, Nov. 3 with a special reception from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sanger Gallery at The Studios of Key West.

FANTASY FEST
The best way to view the parade is from the inside By Kristen Livengood and Gabriel Sanchez VOO-BARIAN RHAPSODY Neil Cataldo has been involved in Fantasy Fest float construction since 1998. “I started off working the float for Fred’s Beds, then around the mid-2000s, we had so many people that two floats were needed. Typically the construction would require decoration expenses, registration fees, etc. and cost around $3000 to $4000. This year the price tag was nearly $10,000 due to the complete overhaul of the float’s foundation. “It’s going to be safer than it’s ever been,” he said. “I also plan to use it for fundraising events with youth organizations.” But how many Conchs does it take to screw together a float? “60 or so,” he said. Usually I get a dozen people that do the majority of the work, so it’s usually the quality of the help that makes it go smoothly.” Of the 60 participants, 20 are on the float, 10 are on the truck, and 30 are walking the perimeter handing out beads. He expects to toss out 17,000 beads. His favorite theme throughout the years of float building was the 2013 “Super Heroes, Villains, and Beyond” theme in which the MISFITS designed a “Heroes Among Us” military tribute that was recognized nationally. THE STUMP TRAIN Gary The Carpenter started his float building after sneaking into the parade almost 20 years ago. “I was on my Harley dressed up, and Judy {the parade marshal} let me stay,” he said. Nineteen floats later, he’s still hammering away on floats because it keeps him out of the crazy crowds. “I wanted to experience the parade without being stuck in the crowds with a bunch of drunk people,” he said. “Once you experience the parade from the inside, you never go back to the crowds to watch it.” He spent about $25,000 rebuilding the float last year, but can reuse the design for a few years before rebuilding again. In 2004, his design won the grand prize with “White Zombie Wedding,” and

FLOAT DESIGN
ABOUT THE PARADE The Fantasy Fest parade starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29 from the Truman Annex Waterfront, winds down White Street to Front Street, before entering Duval Street. The parade is very leisurely, so prepared to be patient. The lower portion of Duval Street is typically the most festive. The parade features dozens of floats, large walking groups and more.
in 2006, won the “Little Engine That Could” prize. The float, “The Galileo,” resembles the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek, and was remodified to a stump train for this year’s political theme. He’ll have about 50 people on the float this year “campaigning,” and asks that his riders chip in $150 for a case of beads and tons of booze. “It’s really expensive doing a float, but always worth it,” he said. His favorite part of the float? The double stalled outhouse. “Two toilets face each other with no divider, “it’s quite the conversation piece.” THE PURPLE PARTY A mixture of blue and red will make up this year’s purple “We Be Fit” float by Theme Runs. Beth Moyes of Theme Runs has been involved in float design and construction since 2012 and has been steadily bringing in awards — Best Costume, People’s Choice awards, and Best Walking Group. This year, she’s bringing the Democrats and Republicans together in the purple party which will also mesh the voodoo theme into the design. “We have at least 100 man hours in,” she said Tuesday morning while putting together her Tutu for Tutu Tuesday after hosting the Heroes and Villains 5K the night before, and the Zombie Bike Ride the night before that. “I’m mustering up energy for the rest of the week.” The planning started six months ago with the creating and designing process with the ordering of costume materials. “All the costumes are custom and handmade,” she said. “That alone is a lot of hours.” She said five to six people a day have been at the float working on details, and they will have 50 to 60 people throwing beads to the crazy crowds during the parade.

“The Return” is the latest original play from Key West’s playwright Bob Bowersox set to begin at the Red Barn Theatre. The story line revolves around David Steele, venerable news anchor, who informs his audience one night that he is not actually David Steele, but is, in reality, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, back for another go. The play stars Tony Konrath, Tom Murtha, Karl M. Stahl, Melody G. Moore, and Vanessa McCaffrey among others.
Meg Cabot, the bestselling author of “The Princess Diaries” series, will discuss her new book, “The Boy Is Back,” in Key West next week. “The Boy Is Back” is the fourth in Cabot’s popular Boy Series, romantic comedies for adults told in e-mails, IMs and journal entries. Publishers Weekly described the earlier Boy books as “cheeky,” and a “frothy concoction of love, friendship and true romance.”
New York Times best-selling author Tim Dorsey will discuss his ongoing series of Florida novels featuring homicidal hero Serge Storms. Key West Island Books will be on hand with books for purchase and a book signing will immediately follow the presentation. This event is free and open to the public at the library on Fleming Street.
The Pier House Resort and Spa is hosting a benefit for Reef Relief featuring the Philly-based Juliano Brothers. Since around 1985, this Philadelphia based "1,200 pound breathing jukebox" has been known to play not only music to party by, but also the music you hear or wish you still heard on the radio. Proceeds benefit the Florida Keys’ reef.

• Share your feelings. Talking about your emotions might be hard, but it can comfort you and the people who care about you. When you tell someone whom you love what you’re feeling, you give that person a chance to support you. You also give your relationship with that person a chance to grow. • Be specific. When reaching out to others, be specific about the kind of support you need. Saying something like, “It would be helpful if you could shop for groceries this week,” or “Can you please drive me to my next appointment?” gives people a clear way to help. This approach cuts down on frustration and reassures your family and friends that they are being helpful. • Take steps to look and feel your best. Many women feel uncomfortable with their appearance after having surgery or chemotherapy. If you had breast surgery or are experiencing hair loss and changes in your physical appearance, learn about options available, such as breast prostheses and wigs. Give yourself time to adjust to changes, and try different solutions until you find what makes you feel most comfortable. • Let yourself feel loved and cared for. After a lumpectomy or mastectomy, a woman may find that regular activities, such as dressing, undressing, bathing, or being intimate with her partner or spouse, give rise to complex emotions. Some women feel so different that they stop taking care of their emotional and physical needs. For example, a woman may distance herself emotionally from her partner. You can make other choices, such as choosing to remain close with your partner or spouse. Everyone deserves to feel loved and cared for. • Talk to your spouse or partner about the physical closeness you need. Share how you feel about your body, and talk about what you think or worry that your partner is feeling. Whatever your needs are – whether you feel a need for physical affection, or if you are not yet interested in being physically intimate – let your partner know. Your partner is most likely waiting for your signal to know what to do, how to act, and what you need. If you have lost the desire to be physically intimate, bring it up with your doctor or nurse. • Get help for lymphedema. Lymphedema is a painful swelling, usually in an arm or leg, which happens when the body’s lymphatic fluid fails to circulate properly and builds up in the soft tissue instead. There are several ways to manage lymphedema. Your doctor or nurse can give you tips to prevent and reduce the swelling. — cancercare.org
Celebrate support from family and friends. Celebrate anything that makes you feel good, no matter how small. My husband and I crossed the ironman finish line in Roth, Germany a few months ago. I raced 140.6 miles with gratitude. Keep making goals and power forward!

I am eternally grateful for my husband’s support and Key West community’s to help me get to where I am today. icca and Paganism get a bad rap according to Monika Wilkens, a practitioner of Wicca and owner of Mystical Key. Former critical care nurse and CEO of a small hospital in Colorado for 18 years, Wilkens is combining her love of healing and her religion in a new store off Truman Avenue, aptly named Mystical Key. Wilkens and her husband, Bob, originally planned on retiring in the Keys but moved ahead of schedule for the sunshine and to start a new chapter in their lives. Mystical Key celebrates alternative forms of worship and healing. It’s filled with fresh healing herbs, essential oils, candles, crystals and tribal jewelry, Wilkens has created a space for people who practice Wicca, Paganism or just dabble in the ideas to shop and meet. The store not only is a place to buy runes, tarot and authentic spell bags but will also provide classes to learn about the mystical arts.
Wilkens wants to pair education with her products and have rotating classes to teach the ancient traditions such as reading runes, tarot or astrology. “Key West has been receptive,” said Wilkens, “People have a misconception of Wicca, it is about loving the earth, animals and celebrating nature. We celebrate the light not the dark.” She said she frequently finds herself explaining the pentagram — “it’s not an evil thing, it is just a chart of earth signs.” Wilkens dismisses skepticism and focuses on the healing nature that many of her products provide. With a vast array of crystals and healing stones and herbs, Wilkens wants to help her customers use the energy of the earth to enhance their health and attitudes. Her husband Bob, a lineman for Keys Energy, will be marketing his stained glass creations in the shop. Whether it is selling sage smudge sticks to clean the home’s energy, natural handmade soaps, astrology books or herbal teas, Wilkens looks forward to teaching her customers and erasing old misconceptions. Check out Mystical Key’s booth during Fantasy Fest street fair, located in front of La Concha.

Hairless but fearless Firefighters go bald to show support
F
irefighter Glenn Taylor wanted to show his support for his younger sister, Suzan Taylor-Craig, who is awaiting chemotherapy following a double mastectomy back on Aug. 24. So he decided he was going to shave off all his hair. When he first told his coworkers, it was simply sharing the family’s ideas for supporting Suzan, the first person in his family that has been diagnosed with breast cancer. “After I mentioned it, there were a couple that came right up and were enthusiastic about getting involved,” said Taylor. “I asked the Fire Chief, ‘Why don’t you see if any of the other guys are in?” All of a sudden, the idea took off like wildfire with guys willing to show their support. Before he knew it, more than 20 firefighters of Islamorada’s Fire Department, plus two of their family members, had joined Taylor in
lopping off their locks to show support for Suzan and all women who are currently fighting breast cancer. “I was with my sister when she had the surgery. When we learned about the chemotherapy, and that she was going to lose her hair, I wanted to do a special gesture for her,” said Taylor. The gesture resonated with his leadership. When the word came out at the officer meeting, everybody there wanted to help says Captain Geo Toth. “So I filmed it, took pictures, and put it on Facebook. We ended up doing about 17 that day, and a few more the following days,” said Toth. “Our family here helps everybody’s family. We went for it using two pairs of clippers and taking turns. It was a gesture we wanted to make.” The boys banding together in solidarity has meant a lot to Taylor and his sister. “I was very humbled by the fact that the guys wanted to show their support like that,” said Taylor. “I didn’t tell her, instead we put it on Facebook. She called me right away and asked,
‘Is this for me?’ and then took time to thank and befriend everyone who showed their support. She was very moved and emotional.” Starting Oct. 31 she will begin scheduling her treatments of chemotherapy, which are followed by radiation treatments. Suzan remains in high spirits, says Taylor. “I love her dearly, she’s the youngest of my siblings, but the strongest. When she first came out of surgery, she just kept saying ‘the badass is back.’”

A VINTAGE TWIST SUSANNE EAST-BROOKE kristen@keysweekly.com
T
opher James' Key West story is familiar to many; while sitting at his nine-to-five job contemplating the next five years of his life, he realized he needed a change. He heard a co-worker describe a recent vacation to Key West, and the next thing he knew he had a one-way ticket to paradise. Growing up in Illinois as one of seven children, Topher's father required them to take piano lessons. At age 15, Topher picked up his first guitar. He learned over 300 worship songs and was playing with his church group in no time. One day he heard his neighbor play a Gibson SG and soon shifted his
interest to electric guitar. He took jazz lessons and studied with Doug Salokar at Heartland Community College. There, Topher' fine-tuned his self-taught abilities by playing along with different artists on the radio, and learning solos and improvising using backing tracks on YouTube. "For me it's not about practice, it's an addiction ... it's joy," says Topher, on playing guitar. Soon after moving to Key West, Topher become a Taylor-certified guitar technician and continues to work at The Grateful Guitar. He also became a street musician until he got his first official gig with Key West artist, Jean Paul, at the Little Room Jazz Club. He's since branched out and you can hear him playing around town with Jack Wolf, Brian Roberts and the Prime Movers, The Bahama Village Social Club, and Tony Baltimore. In addition to performing and being a guitar tech, Topher is also an excellent teacher. He has taught at Key West Montessori Charter School, Bahama Village Music Program, and currently teaches private lessons at The Grateful Guitar. His students are all ages and levels and he teaches guitar, bass, piano, ukulele and drums. His advice to students is to use the Internet as a learning tool, but to also find a good instructor. His latest venture is lead guitarist for popular local band Patrick & The Swayzees, performing fun "rock-a-billy with a twist of surf" music. P&TS are working on releasing five new singles and a music video and are also doing some touring — they were just in Miami Beach and they'll be at New York University Nov. 8-9. For Topher's gig schedule, please see his website at www.topherjames.net.

Tonto shakes up yummy martinis at La Te Da on Duval Street. KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly

F
or the past 14 years, on-and-off bartender Tonto has been shaking up cocktails at La Te Da at 1125 Duval St. She moved down from Pittsburg 30 years ago and stayed for the warm weather, the beach, and good friends. “La Te Da is known for martinis,” she said shaking up her special key lime pie martini, which is also the most popular martini. “What makes ours so good … is a secret.” After adding a graham cracker crust rim on the glass and adding the extra to a chilled sidecar, the patrons at the bar agreed it was the most delicious key lime pie martini they have tried. The dirty Grey Goose martini and green apple martini were also big hits. “It’s a liquid dessert with a better kick,” she said. Tonto suggested the duck entrée, or yellowtail entrée, off the menu as two of her favorite things on the menu.

BRIEFLY Key West Zonta hosts annual race
Duchess Kristen Livengood, King Christopher Rounds, Queen Jane Rohrschneider, and Duke Tommy Ryan celebrate a big win for AIDS Help at the coronation ball. LARRY BLACKBURN/Contributed
NO CROWN, NO PROBLEM $368,330 raised in eight weeks by four candidates
T
KRISTEN LIVENGOOD is a Marathon High School and USF grad, mom of two beautiful little girls, and wife to some cute guy she met in a bar. She enjoys being a social busy bee, red wine, running (very, very slowly), and spearfishing.
his crazy eight-week journey started over a couple of beers at trivia night when Jeremy Wilkerson said a second candidate hadn’t signed up to run for Fantasy Fest Queen, something that has never happened. The candidates raise money for AIDS Help. Somehow, a few beers later, I was signed up and figuring out a way to tell my poor husband the crazy news. This past Friday night at the crowning, I was called up as Duchess of Fantasy Fest. To be honest, it came as a complete shock after 14 exhausting solo fundraising events. I shed a few tears, actually a lot, but realized I am now forever a part of the 28-year history. And, I was never doing this for a crown in the first place. King Christopher Rounds, Duke Tommy Ryan, Queen Jane Rohrschneider, and I raised the second most amount of money for AIDS Help EVER, something that was only topped by an eight-person campaign in 2003. Now, THAT is something to be proud of and I am honored to have been a part of the journey. I never saw myself as dancing on stage in front of more than 300 people, or dreamed of the friendships I made or strengthened throughout the process. A week before kickoff and the night I decided to sign up, Jeanine Christiansen wrote my first campaign check and said “doooo it!” and my friend Jessica Kotch started making phone calls to friends to raise the $2,000 seed money to start the campaign. A few days later, I whispered into Sue Puskedra’s ear that I was going to run, and she immediately got on the phone with 2014 Queen ML and set up a coffee date to set a plan of action. But, it wasn’t me who raised these funds, or even the other candidates. It was our amazing community who came out to our events, opened their houses to strangers for martinis and little black dresses, restaurants who said “no problem” when asked to host date auctions, concerts, and art auctions, those who bought raffle tickets, came kayaking and mini golfing, sang karaoke every Tuesday for eight weeks, and called BINGO in drag. This money, $368,330 to be exact, is money that our entire community raised together; money that stays local and helps our community members with housing, much needed medicine, insurance premiums, and prevention. When someone came up to me and said they wouldn’t be alive today with AIDS Help, I knew I did the right thing. Will I run again? Maybe when I’m 60. In the meantime, I’m carrying a 12-pound golden chalice filled with fizzy beverages to toast my amazing community. Long live the royal court. (Editor’s Note: The Keys Weekly told Kristen she would be fired if she didn’t win the Queen’s crown. On a related note, she was immediately rehired on Monday morning.)
The Zonta Club of Key West will hold its Annual ABC (Awareness Breast Cancer) 5K Walk/Run starting on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 8 a.m. from Salute Restaurant at Higgs Beach. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The event raises money to cover mammograms, thinprep pap tests, and other diagnostic and preventive measures for women in the Lower Keys. Registration is available online at zontakeywest.com/abc-walk. Pre-registration will also be held Friday, Nov. 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Salute Restaurant. DRC offers specials to Floridians Through Oct. 31, all Florida residents, as well as all military personnel and veterans from the U.S. can visit Dolphin Research Center (DRC) for half off general admission. The nonprofit education and research facility is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and features exciting, educational behavior sessions with the dolphins and sea lions and other presentations throughout the day and a splash park. DRC is located at MM 59 on Grassy Key. Proof of valid Florida residency or military/veteran identification is required. The offer cannot be combined with others and does not include interactive programs. Community Foundation accepting Unsung Heroes nominations The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) is accepting nominations for the 17th Annual Unsung Heroes celebration, recognizing the tremendous efforts of volunteers who donate their time and service to our community’s nonprofits. All Monroe County 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofits are invited to nominate their Volunteer of the Year to be honored at a celebration on Jan. 27, 2017. The deadline for this year’s nominations is Dec.16. Online nomination forms are available at cffk.org.
