I think it is fair to say, this week will go down in history — one way or another, none of us will forget the election of ‘16. Whether this country turns red, blue or, by slim chance, green, it is clear maybe we didn’t have enough options. While writing in a leprechaun or unicorn sounds fun, we asked our readers to think of great leaders/thinkers from the past …

Do you want ’em? Free buildings come with a cost HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
V
oters of Key West must say “yea” or “nay” to the city’s acquisition of the defunct Key West Diesel Plant, three separate buildings located at 100 Angela St., 709 Fort St. and 101 Geraldine St. Keys Energy Services has offered the buildings at no cost to the city. However, they are in poor condition — two of the buildings, Fort Street and Geraldine Street, must be demolished due to unsafe building structures and 100 Angela would need to be rehabilitated for future use. If the city chooses to take over the sites, estimated costs for demolition and rehabilitation range from $629,971 to $996,929, according to an engineering survey conducted by the City of Key West. This cost does not include an additional environmental site assessment of $422,400 to study and dispose of contaminated soil. All in all, it’s estimated it would require $1.4 million to make
Should the City of Key West be permitted to acquire the real property located at 101 Geraldine Street, 100 Angela Street and 709 Fort Street, formerly used as a power generation facility, from the Utility Board of the City of Key West (a.k.a. Keys Energy Services) at no cost?
“KEYS is completely neutral on whether the City should acquire the Key West Diesel Plant or not. KEYS would like the City to take the property at no cost if it would be useful for the development of Truman Waterfront or Bahama Village; however, KEYS does not want the City to take the property at no cost if it would become a burden to the City or its taxpayers.” — a Statement by Keys Energy Services on their website regarding the donation of KWD plant.
the properties viable. But Key Westers can’t argue that 12,000 square feet of prime real estate adjacent Bahama Village and the new Truman Waterfront Park doesn’t have the potential to be a valuable asset in the long run. Only zoned for commercial use due to past pollution, the properties present a wealth of opportunities. According to the City’s survey, “Acquisition will support development/use of, and access to, adjacent properties including the Truman Waterfront Park, the Caroline Street Corridor and Bahama Village Community Redevelopment Agency, and the Fort Street Row.” The referendum was approved for the Nov. 8 ballot by a 6-1 vote of the Key West City Commissioners. Now, it’s up to voters to weigh cost, risk and benefit.

ELECTION SEASON
KEY WEST WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 4, 2016
Incumbent Carlos Luis Curbelo, Republican, faces challenger Joe Garcia, Democrat, for Congress in Florida’s 26th District. Curbelo has served since 2014, when he defeated then Congressman Garcia by a margin of 52 to 48 percent. In 2016, they are matching up again.
1. What is your definition of a political refugee and how do you differentiate political refugees from illegal immigrants? 2. What can the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers do to speed along restoration of the Everglades and Florida Bay? 3. How much time do you spend in the Keys and how well do you understand the issues facing our residents?
CARLOS CURBELO (R), incumbent
JOE GARCIA (D)
1. In South Florida, Cubans are the largest group of political refugees. This status needs to be protected, but it has to be reformed. I have led efforts in Congress to end the automatic refugee welfare benefits granted to every Cuban that arrives in our country. The bill I introduced requires Cubans seeking benefits to apply for asylum like any other arriving refugee. This would eliminate the massive fraud discovered in recent years, and would save taxpayers $2.45 billion over 10 years. We must do everything we can to disincentivize the dangerous treks, while ensuring those who truly are deserving of our nation's protection can still do so. 2. In conjunction with environmental advocates in Florida, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will implement Central Everglades Planning Project, a $1.9 billion longterm Everglades restoration program. After CEPP initially failed to receive adequate support in 2014, I am proud to report that with my bipartisan leadership within the Florida Delegation, it passed the House and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. 3. I enjoy my time in the Florida Keys and I make it down as often as possible. Because I can’t always be there myself, I have established an office with full-time staff in Key West. There are a lot of pressing issues in the Keys, from Everglades restoration to the Zika virus to affordable housing. National flood insurance is a big part of the equation, and I'm focused on building consensus in Congress to make sure South Florida is protected and treated fairly.
1. A political refugee is someone who is unwilling or unable to reside in the country of their nationality because of political persecution. We need comprehensive immigration reform to better accommodate those who come to this country for reasons that are often no less pressing than political persecution. Immigration reform will create millions of jobs, reduce the deficit and strengthen our families. Similarly, it will allow us to secure our borders and for law enforcement to focus on enforcement priorities such as violent criminals and terrorist threats. 2. We need to prioritize the Central Everglades Planning Project and projects that help water flow into South Florida. The fundamental action we must take should be to restore freshwater flow to the South of Lake Okeechobee. This will require the full implementation of projects we have been working on for well over a decade. In Congress I will fight for the federal dollars necessary to get these projects done, and I will work with state leaders to ensure we reach bipartisan consensus to protect these precious natural resources. 3. I proudly lived in Key West during my time in Congress and worked hand in hand with the community to ensure their voice was heard in Washington. In Congress, I was proud to open the first ever office with a full-time staffer in Monroe County. We worked with local residents to lower premiums on flood insurance, we worked with local fisherman to keep our local lobstermen fishing, and we won millions in funding for local water quality projects.

upervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin was re-elected to office unopposed in 2016. That allows her to give her entire focus to this voting season — getting out the absentee ballots, making multiple trips to the post office per day, accommodating the crowd of early voters. She breezes through the backroom of the U.S. Post Office greeting half a dozen carriers by name and joshing around with the postmaster. One her way back in the car, (there are tubs of mail in the rear of her SUV), she waves at the candidates campaigning on sidewalks. “Oh, would you look at that?” she said, pointing to Public Defender candidate Robert Lockwood pedaling a three-wheel tricycle weighed down by huge signs. She rolls down the window and calls out to Utility board candidate Carol Schreck, “Heeeeeey, Carol, how’s it going?” Griffin was elected to her post in 2012, after the long tenure of her former boss, Harry Sawyer. Born and raised in Key West, she knows her candidates and many of her voters by name, striving always to provide the best level of service. The office fits her like a glove.
Can you sum up this year’s election season? [Long pause.] Both sides are really involved. And the amount of talking back and forth … I’m hooked on it like it’s my favorite TV show. I’ve watched all the debates; it’s like “Game of Thrones.” What’s your guilty pleasure? I love sweets and bread. Carbs in general. If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? My daddy, Carl Griffin. What was it like growing up in Key West? I grew up in the “Cleaver’s” household. We played outside and only came home when the streetlights came on. It was family oriented. Who is the unsung hero of the election? In the Keys, it’s public works. They are responsible for delivering the machines up and down the Keys. They don’t get enough credit. They are the elves helping the shoemaker. What’s your motto? What doesn’t change, dies. How long do you keep the paper ballots? For two years, then they are shredded. What’s your favorite app? Right now, it’s the Countdown App. When I’m out on the street, people are always asking me about election dates. Are you tech-savvy? Well, I know my equipment and I love my phone!
Questions with
Joyce Griffin How many times a day do you visit the post office during early voting? Three. How many employees does the Supervisor of Elections office have? Six full time employees. What’s your pet peeve? Arrogance. How long have you worked in the Supervisor of Elections office? Thirtyone years. When I started we were still using the lever machines, where you pull it and the curtain closes behind you.
LADY OF THE VOTE returned to Key West, the totals on the memory card are compared to the transmitted totals. There has never been a discrepancy. Best job ever? Besides this one? That would be working for the Triple A Padres baseball team that had a field in Key West. Now, I root for the Marlins, but those baseball players were pretty cute! What’s your heritage? Irish, Cuban, German, Dutch, Choctaw, and Texan. My ancestry is like Heinz 57, a little bit of everything.
What voting system is most vulnerable to fraud? The punch cards, because of “pregnant” chads. Although we don’t use those in Florida anymore, other counties do. Put it this way — Monroe County didn’t create an artificial reef with the old punch card machines, they went somewhere else.
What do you do on Sunday? I take care of my garden and my mom’s garden. She’s 92 and still lives independently.
Is our system vulnerable to fraud? No. We upload the results from each machine, via a secure modem. After the machines have been collected and
What was your craziest adventure? When I was 19, I went backpacking across Europe. I didn’t speak Spanish, so my mom made a postcard with an-
What TV shows do you watch? “Game of Thrones,” “Big Band Theory” and “Law & Order.”
cestral names on it. It was a wild trip in Spain involving trains and taxis, knocking on doors and collecting strangers along the way. I finally arrived at my tia’s house in a little town at dusk, with what seemed like the entire village crowded in behind me to watch the drama. Describe the lengths you go to to get out the ballot. I had a very interesting case recently where I was having a hard time communicating with a voter that needed an absentee ballot. After a bunch of emails, I finally got him on the phone with an interpreter and learned he was deaf. I think it was his first time voting, and it was exciting for both of us. What do the voters need to know about the Supervisor of Elections office? It’s the only government agency, aside from the Sheriff’s Office, that needs to be able to serve all of its clients in one day, the day they go to the polls. It takes a lot of planning and a lot of technology.

omanKind is celebrating its 15th anniversary and hosting a fantastic reunion to celebrate. For a decade and a half, Womankind has provided our community with much needed medical services and as a result has become a staple in Key West’s healthcare fabric. Starting with 300 patient visits the first year, to now more than 4,000 visits a year, Womankind has evolved into an invaluable healthcare resource for both men and women in our community. “Gazelle Lange and Renee Grier, two nurse practitioners, started Womankind because young girls didn’t know enough,” said Kim Romano, executive di-
rector. “They wanted to be more user friendly than a hospital.” And Womankind still is user friendly as its services have expanded with the changing economic landscape and fluctuating healthcare environment. Major improvements have happened such as taking health insurance and helping patients sign up for Obamacare. They offer bioidentical hormones, mental health services and Zika testing. An OB/GYN is now on staff and the organization helped procure a $600,000 grant for sex education for Keys high schoolers. The offices moved to its predominant site on Truman Avenue and Womankind converted 2,500 files into digital health records. And, staff tempt

patients with chocolate bars to participate in a survey designed to help improve services. “This party is about bringing everyone together who has been involved in Womankind and saying thank you for being our patients, for working for us and/or for donating to us,” said Romano. Major donors have been Susan G Komen Foundation, Dogwood Foundation, Justin and Eileen Kanler, Klaus Murphy, the county HSAB, and the Health Department which has funded services for anyone under 25 years old. The party will take place at 920 Eisenhower Dr. (next to Womankind). The property was donated for the evening by David Wolkowsky showcasing a complete renovation of the 1928 house of Joe Russell, owner of the original Sloppy Joe’s. Rude girl will DJ, piñatas will be hit, cupcakes from Key West Cupcakes will be consumed and an awesome cash bar awaits. 36th Annual Key West World Championship boat races right around the corner
S
uper Boat International offshore races are some of the most spectacular races in the world. With local racers and pit crews, and princes, and geckos, and more, the races always excite the spectators. Meet the crews in the dry pits at Race Village and watch favorites race the rectangular racecourse off Truman Waterfront at speeds topping 180 mph. Practices will be happening all week, with races on Wednesday, Friday, and the final day on Sunday. Here’s more highlights of race week:
KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com
1. SEE THE PARADE On Sunday, Nov. 6 starting at 4 p.m. the race boats will parade down Duval Street via trailers and big, big trucks passing out candy, beads, and more. Wave to the throttle men, the drivers, and their families as they pass by the street’s restaurants and bars on their way to the dry pits.
4. PARTY WITH THE RACERS Hangout with the racers on Friday, Nov. 11 from 7 to 11 p.m. at their favorite haunts. The race boats will grace Duval Street again, but this time staged in front of the bars and restaurants of their sponsors. Mosey along the closed-off streets and ogle the boats landside.
2. VISIT THE RACE VILLAGE Starting from Sunday, Nov. 6 through the final race day on Sunday, Nov. 13, Race Village at Truman Annex waterfront will be open to the public until 5 p.m. daily. Visit with the teams, buy merchandise and win free swag from the boat sponsors.
5. LAST CHANCE The final races take place on Sunday, Nov. 13. The first race starts at 10 a.m. and the fourth race is at 2:30 p.m. The VIP tent is located at the outer mole and tickets include lunch and premium bathrooms. Regular admission allows access to the outer mole, which is perfect for watching the race boats launch, and land from the wet pits with unobstructed views of the races on the oceanside. Wear good walking shoes, it’s a hike. Cars will be lined up on the waterfront at Fort Zachary tailgating — earlier arrivals will get prime parking with park admission. Another prime spot to watch from is by boat from the designated spots in the harbor, like around Sunset Key.
3. WATCH THE RACES Race Day #1 is Wednesday, Nov. 9, Race Day #2 is Friday, Nov. 11 with the first race at 10 a.m. and fourth race at 2:30 p.m. All races take place in front of the Truman Waterfront and are visible from other properties along that side of the island. Regular admission allows access to the outer mole. The outer mole is also home to food and drink booths and swag tents. Other places to watch include Mallory Square, Fort Zachary Taylor, and from the various resorts and restaurants along the shoreline. Personal fave: grab lunch on Wednesday afternoon at Hyatt Key West’s Shor American Seafood Grill or Blue Mojito Pool Bar and Grill.

NEWS ANCHOR OR CHRIST?
Bob Bowersox debuts ‘The Return’ at The Red Barn Theatre HAYS BLINCKMANN
I
hays@keysweekly.com
f Jesus Christ returned — as a trusted news anchor no less — how would the public react? “The Return” is playwright Bob Bowersox’s quest to answer some lighthearted cultural and personal questions about today’s reaction of organized religion and religious “salvation.” Bowersox has crafted a play that investigates religious phenomena in the best possible setting — the lifeblood of mainstream culture, the media. Lead anchorman, David Steele of the World Wide News, played by a convincing Toby Konrath, suddenly announces he is Jesus Christ on live television. The subsequent outcome ranges from casual disbelief to religious fanatics making him a demagogue. Bowersox adeptly strikes at the shallowness of mainstream media as the network bigwigs care less about the truth and more about the ratings. Melody Moore gives a sharp-tongued performance as the toothy network exec, Amanda Richards, come not to save the day but profit off it. The counterpoints to David Steele’s insanity is his wife, Patricia Steele, played by the delightful Vanessa McCaffrey, who simply wants to grow old with her husband, not Jesus Christ; and his boss at WNN, Karl M. Stahl, who dismisses the nonsense with scotch and aptly acts as the passive masses who make no stand against the insanity, only drink to it. The crux of the play is in Steele’s intent as he says, “Man’s faith in himself, I just want to give it back to him,” but his producer Charlie, played by Tom Murtha, who happens to be dying of cancer asks, “Ever think he just doesn’t want it?” The quick-witted exchanges between all the characters is a facetious mirroring of the various notions of faith throughout our society.
“The Return” will run at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West Nov. 1-19.
Tom Murtha tries to get through to Tony Konrath after he announces live on the air that he is actually the returned Jesus Christ in ‘The Return,’ now playing at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West. LARRY BLACKBURN/Contributed
“I am nothing more than you, you think you need a savior — but you are the savior.” — David Steele, news anchor and ‘Jesus Christ’
Bowersox, who grew up with a fundamentalist mother and by-theGood-Book preacher grandfather, feels, “Too many people are worshipping the medium not the message.” “The Return” delightfully pokes fun at people’s gullibility and vulnerability when it comes to religion. Bowersox wrote “The Return” for these particular actors who charmingly bring the play to life with ease and elocution. Tickets for “The Return” are available at redbarntheatre.com/tickets or call the box office 305-296-9911.
Tom Murtha, Melody Moore, and Karl Stahl watch a news broadcast to see what Tony Konrath might say in ‘The Return’ now playing at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West.

THE 77 SEASON TH
Waterfront Playhouse set for new season
T
he Waterfront Playhouse is thrilled to announce its 2016/17 season of award-winning plays and musicals. The esteemed Waterfront Playhouse “consistently presents a very high level of theatre in Key West” with “top quality productions” which “never disappoints” and features “the best production values and best acting in town.” Those quotes were lifted from the Waterfront’s recent annual survey. The 77th season plans to build and expand on those superlatives. Here’s what’s in store: • An Evening of Burt Bacharach — Nov. 18-19. The season kicks off with the Waterfront’s opening concert, this year featuring the music of Grammy and award winning composer, Burt Bacharach. The concert will feature an amazing lineup of Key West singers delivering a groovy evening of Bacharach tunes. The Friday performance includes a fabulous gala post-show party. • “It’s Only a Play” by Terrence McNally — Dec. 15-Jan. 9. It’s opening night for a new Broadway play, and all the players have gathered at a posh penthouse to anxiously await the reviews. Egos, cattiness and a yappy dog clash in this hilarious hit comedy about show biz folks behaving badly. • “The Trip to Bountiful” by Horton Foote — Jan. 26-Feb. 11. Carrie Watts, a widow living with her son and bossy daughter-in-law, flees her
cramped surroundings to embark on a remarkable journey to Bountiful, her childhood home. Winner of multiple Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Awards, this American classic is touching, funny and life-affirming. • “Avenue Q” by Jeff Whitty (book) & Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx (music/ lyrics) — March 2-25. The hilarious musical theater phenomenon comes to the Waterfront! Part flesh, part fur and all heart, “Avenue Q” follows a group of 20-somethings seeking their purpose in big-city life. The results are smart, tuneful and very funny. Winner of the Triple Crown of Tonys (Best Musical, Book & Score). • “Good People” by David LindsayAbaire — April 13-29. Why do some people’s dreams come true and for others they don’t? When Margie loses her job at a South Boston Dollar Store, she gets in touch with a former boyfriend (now a successful doctor) looking for a job. Things don’t go as planned in this wicked smart comedy. • “Forever Plaid” by Stuart Ross — May 11-27. On a stormy night in the 1960s, four eager singers known as The Plaids meet their untimely ends on their way to their first big gig. Now this quartet of comic crooners gets one last chance to return from the afterlife and do the show they never got to perform. Memberships, individual tickets and gift certificates are available at www.waterfrontplayhouse.org or by calling 305-294-5015. Memberships start at $100 and includes a restaurant card, entitling patrons to discounts at many of Key West’s finest restaurants. — Contributed

L
ike a lot of musicians, Jack Wolf caught the music bug at church where he played piano when he was a teenager. Also like a lot of artists and musicians before him, it took awhile to find his true passion, but once he did there was no stopping him. In his early years Jack dabbled in a lot of different things — he did a stint in the Navy, spent a short time at college, and did a 1,300-mile bike trip around the country. Then one day he bought a $50 guitar and went on to practice every single day for the next four years. Jack made his way as a musician in the Knoxville area both playing and writing music. He had a wide array of musical “obsessions” including Nirvana, James Taylor, Jack Johnson and the White Stripes. On Groundhog's Day 2013 Jack started a traveling busking tour with drummer Rob Cook (locals may remember Rob with the neck-tie washboard). Jack and Rob played in Asheville, Charlotte, Charleston, Ocala, Miami and eventually they got to Key West where they played on

the streets, slept in their truck and used Denny's as their “office” to write songs and charge their phones. These days Jack can be heard around Key West as a one-man-show at spots like Irish Kevin’s and Sunset Water Sports Sandy Cat, and also with his band Jack Wolf & The Howlers at Captain Tony's. JW&TH is a combo with Jon Skiff on bass and Lee Venters on drums. They plan to release another CD in the coming months and are also planning a tour around the U.S. Jack is very driven to improve himself — he practices piano everyday, watches a lot of “how-to” videos and continues to take regular guitar lessons. As Jack says, “comfort is evil." He enjoys checking things off lists and is a self-proclaimed “completionist.” Jack has released three CD's including a recording of the original ballad “Battling the Blues” which is about a girl and love (said girl sings with him on the recording). Jack's recordings are available on iTunes and Spotify and you can find updates to his live performance schedule on his Facebook page at Jack Wolf Music.

F
or the past 20 years, sommelier Andrew Forrow has been serving wine to his loyal patrons and friends at Grand Vin on Duval Street. Before it was Grand Vin, it was Mosquito Coast and Andrew “came with the building.” He’s lived in Key West since 1993 and hails from Torquay, England. Although he will never admit how many bottles of wine he’s tested over the years, he says his favorites are from the Napa Valley region, with an emphasis on the Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014. According to the bottle, 2014 presented the perfect weather in Napa Valley for growing grapes and Andrew agrees this vintage is well made, “it has the perfect structure and flavor.” On the front porch, regulars are sipping wine as they watch bicyclists pass the quiet end of Duval, while Andrew is chatting it up inside with more regulars at the bar. Tourists sip wine in the back of the shop and share a cheese plate filled with various cheeses, grapes, crackers and nuts. When he isn’t serving up the nightly specials of chardonnays and champagnes, he’s at the gym, reading, and watching “miserable” movies. He’s currently reading “We Are Water,” and says his favorite movie is “Mulan Rouge,” among others. Grand Vin is located at 1107 Duval St. and is open from noon to midnight.

few sprinkles and Fantasy Fest did not keep Lower Keys runners from a great Sunday morning race, the fourth annual Vineyard Community Church’s 5k run and walk. A few sprinkles made for a damp course, but cool breezes helped runners navigate through Big Pine neighborhoods to run some great times. Key West High School runner Scout Graft was the first across the finish line — running a great time of 19:03. (But he’s capable of an 18-minute 5k that he clocks in the school’s cross country meets.) Male masters runner and past Vineyard winner, Storm Lefelar, ran second overall and first in the masters category with a time of 19:16. These times had to be adjusted, by the way, due to the fast pace of these two who were done before volunteers had time to set up the finish line, causing them to run about an extra quarter mile. (No other runners’ times were affected.) Women were led all the way by Key West runner Nikki Miklos, winning the overall women’s award in 25:11, and Pamela Dawn Smith, winning the female masters award in 27:20. Eleven-year-old Jack Haggard ran a great time of 26:52 to win the Male 1014 age group and eight-year-old Carly
Barr won the 9 and Under female age group with a time of 34:17. Top overall walkers were Debra Pearl, 44:29, and William Argabrite, 52:33. Vineyard Christian Center puts on this event as part of its weekend Fall Festival. Key West Southernmost Runners helped out with the course, timing and results. Kala released after ‘flipperectomy’ Turtle Hospital returns four turtles to the ocean JASON KOLER
jason@keysweekly.com
When the northerly winds settled down this past Wednesday Turtle Hospital Manager Bette Zirkelbach made the call. Kala, a 215-pound green sea turtle would be returned to her home … sans one flipper. She was rescued by the FWC on Aug. 30 when a family found her near Molasses Reef. The distressed turtle had ingested fishing line and had become entangled in both monofilament and had a trap line wrapped tightly around her front flipper. “We worked furiously to try to save her flipper with laser therapy and in-water physical training sessions three times a day,” Zirkelbach
said. Due to the amount of time the flipper was without circulation, Zirkelbach enlisted the help of Marathon Veterinary Hospital’s Dr. Doug Mader, who amputated the flipper. “Kala healed well and is able to survive in the wild with three good functioning flippers,” Zirkelbach reported. Kala is one of 71 turtles admitted to the Turtle Hospital this year due to entanglements, accidents and those suffering from the Fibropapillomatosis virus which causes tumor growth significant enough to impair swimming and eating. For more about the Turtle Hospital visit turtlehospital.org.
