There are plenty of things you simply shouldn’t trust. For example, you should never trust gas station sushi or a rattlesnake with a “pet me” sign or a Cosby Colada. As this year’s general election creeps ever closer, more Americans are beginning to feel the frustration of having to trust the lesser of two widely perceived evils. An embattled election has seen both candidates shred each other’s credibility, personal life, and record. So the Weekly asked …

DRC provides worthy service

Nine manatee deaths recorded this year

I wanted to thank you on behalf of the City of Key Colony Beach for your efforts in successfully rescuing the injured manatee on Aug. 10. I would have never imagined how much patience, the tactics and the cooperation needed in this type of rescue. It was truly amazing to see you all take on the task and complete it in a short amount of time.

It is nice to know that there are people like you that we can contact to help our wildlife that may be injured and need of rescuing.

November is Manatee Awareness Month. On behalf of all manatees, Dolphin Research Center would like everyone in the Florida Keys to be aware of these gentle animals every day. DRC is the licensed manatee rescue team for Monroe County. Every year we see manatees severely injured because they’ve been hit by boats, become entangled in fishing line or other debris, or accidentally ingested fishing tackle.

Humans create these dangers and it’s up to all of us to be the solution. Recently, the DRC team and the FWCC were called to rescue orphaned manatee babies. They were the twins of Bonnie, one of the most well-known manatees in the area. We first assisted Bonnie more than 20 years ago when her pectoral flipper was severely entangled in discarded fishing line. Over the years, she needed help several times – including at one point the partial amputation of a flipper and a lengthy rehabilitation at Miami Seaquarium. It was vitally important that she receive all this aide so that she could continue to live her life, producing and raising multiple offspring to help bolster the population of this endangered species. By all accounts, she was a terrific mom.

After her death, officials discovered that one flipper was so entangled and the mammary gland beneath it infected so that her babies could not nurse from that side. Even with only being able to nurse from a single teat, she was raising two robust calves.

Bonnie’s life came to an unnecessary, early end when she was hit by a boat. Too often, boaters are in such a rush that they ignore posted manatee speed zones and strike these gentle giants before they can get out of the way.

She was the ninth manatee fatality in the Florida Keys in this calendar year.

These deaths are preventable if only people are more careful and responsible on the water.

As winter approaches, we see more manatees arrive in our warmer Keys’ waters. We also welcome more seasonal residents and visitors which means a greater number of boats in action. We need to increase our awareness and do more to protect, not imperil, the manatees with whom we share our surroundings. Please do not let your discarded fishing line get into the water. Bring it and all trash back to the dock with you for proper disposal.

Slow down, look around and follow posted speed zones. Do not offer food or water to manatees. They don’t need it and it only encourages them to come closer to more heavily trafficked areas where there is greater risk from boats.

You wouldn’t put your dog or cat’s food and water bowls in the middle of the Overseas Highway, would you?

If you see an injured, sick or orphaned manatee, please immediately call the FWCC at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922). If you see something, say something.

You are the first line of defense for these wonderful Florida manatees.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS Marathon voters will take to the booth on Nov. 8 (or before, with the increasingly popular early vote) to determine which three of the four candidates will serve on the next council. There are three incumbents on the ballot — Dan Zieg, Bill Kelly and John Bartus (although Bartus was appointed to the seat when former Councilman Chris Bull stepped down). They are joined by newcomer Steve Cook. With less than four days before the election, the Keys Weekly offered editorial space so the candidates could address voters in their own words on the most important topics and why they deserve the vote.

We live in a small island town with really big issues — issues that will shape just how our small town survives and thrives into the future. The very heart and soul of our community is at stake. And the JOHN BARTUS, potential changes incumbent coming over the next three years will determine just how much our town stays our town. We need a vibrant local economy and a healthy climate for our local businesses — but we also need to make sure that people can afford to live here, raise their families here, and enjoy this special place we all call home.

I believed in Marathon so much that I helped us incorporate and served six years on our first City Council. When asked to return and fill in vacancies on the Council, I gladly stepped forward to serve a community that has been so good to me. And I am now asking for your trust and your vote one more time as we work together to preserve the Marathon we know and love.

I decided at the outset of this campaign not to accept one cent in campaign contributions. Candidates have raised more than $20,000 to run campaigns for City Council in the past.

I think that’s ridiculous. There are a lot of ways that $20,000 can help out people in our town. Instead of contributing to my campaign, I asked supporters to write a check to one of our local charities — the list of deserving non-profits is as large as their needs. I will be acknowledging those wonderful people who made donations after the election.

My commitment to you, however, is to continue working for our community and to remain your independent voice on Marathon’s City Council. I ask for your support and your vote on November 8.

I am Steve Cook and Marathon is my home. I wasn’t born here … I chose to spend the rest of my life here, because of the family-friendly character of Marathon.

It’s a small town STEVE COOK with thousands of world travelers arriving and passing through our city limits everyday. However, lately there are more tourists traveling to Marathon, and day tripping to other keys! In the near future, the look and character of our town is likely going to be challenged. Some of our younger citizens are questioning whether they will be able to raise their families here, while our seniors are worried that they might not have the savings to be able to stay and enjoy the community they spent their life building.

Together, we will work to make a better quality of life for our kids, grandkids, and seniors, so they’re not worried about their future here. We must make homes easier to obtain, and keep. We will work to make Citizens Insurance rates more comparable to the rest of coastal Florida. We will work with leadership in Tallahassee to gain home rule so we can actively “cap” vacation rentals. We will take advantage of opportunities for growth with the expansion of Cuban/American relations for fishing charters, tour charters, and a larger cruising community in our harbors and more cars on our roads.

But these are good problems!

Together, WE can maintain our unique keys community that rolls up its sleeves and works together when times get tough. Together, we can shape the future stability of Marathon.

Together we will work to keep our family-friendly workforce community we have come to know and love. We must always have a fresh point of view.

My father, mother and my little brother moved to Marathon from New Jersey in 1973. I followed them here in 1978 and now my father loves to say, “The next time I move, I'm NOT going to tell him BILL KELLY, where!” I'm a 39-year incumbent resident of Marathon and I am asking you to reelect me to a second term on the Marathon City Council. I moved here from New Jersey and never look back because I have found paradise and that is why I want to be on the City Council — to preserve our piece of paradise. Marathon is truly the heart of the Florida Keys.

I have served on the Monroe County Contractors Licensing Board for 12 years. I have been the chairman of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce and I am a proud graduate of Leadership Monroe County Class of 23, the best class.

What I will bring to the Marathon City Council is my honesty and fairness for all citizens Marathon. I was once asked, “Are you honest because you’re Irish Catholic?” and I replied “No, I'm honest because of my mother.”

I am a retired orthopaedic surgeon, private pilot, successful businessman, father of two sons, Brandon and Ryan, their wives Katy DAN ZIEG, and Elissa, and one incumbent grandson Jack, and a member of the Lions Club.

My record of community service over the past 20-plus years includes being a volunteer firefighter, a volunteer reserve deputy, and served on the Planning Commission twice for two Councilmembers.

During my first term I worked to pass a resolution regulating developments to require development agreements instead of replatting to insure public input and examination by the public. I also set up an equation requiring developers to build an affordable unit for each 10 hotel or resort rooms, not pay $20,000. I also guided the Council to approve the resolution making no parking areas along Harbor Drive and Aviation, relieving the safety and parking issues for the neighborhood. In addition, I also resurrected the First Time Homebuyer Program.

We have approved 80 new affordable units and at the September 27 meeting the other members agreed with me to direct staff to request 50 more units from the county for our city's 104th Street project. We also need to engage the private sector to solve this problem as it can move much more efficiently.

Windstorm insurance needs regulating and FIRM needs our support so we can afford to live here. Vacation rentals need to be returned to local rule, so we can control our own destiny. They are a economic boon to our city but also a challenge to our neighborhoods.

I am able to work with our leaders, including U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, state Rep. Holly Raschein and state Sen. Anitere Flores.

upervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin was re-elected to office unopposed in 2016. That allows her to give her entire focus to this voting season — getting out the absentee ballots, making multiple trips to the post office per day, accommodating the crowd of early voters.

She breezes through the backroom of the U.S. Post Office greeting half a dozen carriers by name and joshing around with the postmaster. One her way back in the car, (there are tubs of mail in the rear of her SUV), she waves at the candidates campaigning on sidewalks.

“Oh, would you look at that?” she said, pointing to Public Defender candidate Robert Lockwood pedaling a three-wheel tricycle weighed down by huge signs. She rolls down the window and calls out to Utility board candidate Carol Schreck, “Heeeeeey, Carol, how’s it going?”

Griffin was elected to her post in 2012, after the long tenure of her former boss, Harry Sawyer. Born and raised in Key West, she knows her candidates and many of her voters by name, striving always to provide the best level of service. The office fits her like a glove.

Can you sum up this year’s election season? [Long pause.]

Both sides are really involved.

And the amount of talking back and forth … I’m hooked on it like it’s my favorite TV show. I’ve watched all the debates; it’s like “Game of Thrones.”

What’s your guilty pleasure? I love sweets and bread. Carbs in general.

If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? My daddy, Carl Griffin.

What was it like growing up in Key West? I grew up in the “Cleaver’s” household. We played outside and only came home when the streetlights came on. It was family oriented.

Who is the unsung hero of the election? In the Keys, it’s public works. They are responsible for delivering the machines up and down the Keys. They don’t get enough credit. They are the elves helping the shoemaker.

What’s your motto? What doesn’t change, dies.

How long do you keep the paper ballots? For two years, then they are shredded.

What’s your favorite app?

Right now, it’s the Countdown App. When I’m out on the street, people are always asking me about election dates.

Are you tech-savvy? Well, I know my equipment and I love my phone!

How long have you worked in the Supervisor of Elections office? Thirtyone years. When I started we were still using the lever machines, where you pull it and the curtain closes behind you.

What voting system is most vulnerable to fraud? The punch cards, because of “pregnant” chads. Although we don’t use those in Florida anymore, other counties do. Put it this way — Monroe County didn’t create an artificial reef with the old punch card machines, they went somewhere else.

What do you do on Sunday? I take care of my garden and my mom’s garden. She’s 92 and still lives independently.

Describe the lengths you go to to get out the ballot. I had a very interesting case recently where I was having a hard time communicating with a voter that needed an absentee ballot. After a bunch of emails, I finally got him on the phone with an interpreter and learned he was deaf. I think it was his first time voting, and it was exciting for both of us.

What do the voters need to know about the Supervisor of Elections office? It’s the only government agency, aside from the Sheriff’s Office, that needs to be able to serve all of its clients in one day, the day they go to the polls. It takes a lot of planning and a lot of technology.

Incumbent Carlos Luis Curbelo, Republican, faces challenger Joe Garcia, Democrat, for Congress in Florida’s 26th District. Curbelo has served since 2014, when he defeated then Congressman Garcia by a margin of 52 to 48 percent. In 2016, they are matching up again.

1. What is your definition of a political refugee and how do you differentiate political refugees from illegal immigrants?

2. What can the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers do to speed along restoration of the Everglades and Florida Bay? 3. How much time do you spend in the Keys and how well do you understand the issues facing our residents?

1. In South Florida, Cubans are the largest group of political refugees. This status needs to be protected, but it has to be reformed. I have led efforts in Congress to end the automatic refugee welfare benefits granted to every Cuban that arrives in our country. The bill I introduced requires Cubans seeking benefits to apply for asylum like any other arriving refugee. This would eliminate the massive fraud discovered in recent years, and would save taxpayers $2.45 billion over 10 years. We must do everything we can to disincentivize the dangerous treks, while ensuring those who truly are deserving of our nation's protection can still do so.

2. In conjunction with environmental advocates in Florida, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will implement Central Everglades Planning Project, a $1.9 billion longterm Everglades restoration program. After CEPP initially failed to receive adequate support in 2014, I am proud to report that with my bipartisan leadership within the Florida Delegation, it passed the House and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

3. I enjoy my time in the Florida Keys and I make it down as often as possible.

Because I can’t always be there myself, I have established an office with full-time staff in Key West. There are a lot of pressing issues in the Keys, from Everglades restoration to the Zika virus to affordable housing.

National flood insurance is a big part of the equation, and I'm focused on building consensus in Congress to make sure South Florida is protected and treated fairly.

1. A political refugee is someone who is unwilling or unable to reside in the country of their nationality because of political persecution. We need comprehensive immigration reform to better accommodate those who come to this country for reasons that are often no less pressing than political persecution. Immigration reform will create millions of jobs, reduce the deficit and strengthen our families. Similarly, it will allow us to secure our borders and for law enforcement to focus on enforcement priorities such as violent criminals and terrorist threats.

2. We need to prioritize the Central Everglades Planning Project and projects that help water flow into South Florida. The fundamental action we must take should be to restore freshwater flow to the South of Lake Okeechobee. This will require the full implementation of projects we have been working on for well over a decade. In Congress I will fight for the federal dollars necessary to get these projects done, and I will work with state leaders to ensure we reach bipartisan consensus to protect these precious natural resources.

3. I proudly lived in Key West during my time in Congress and worked hand in hand with the community to ensure their voice was heard in Washington. In Congress, I was proud to open the first ever office with a full-time staffer in Monroe County. We worked with local residents to lower premiums on flood insurance, we worked with local fisherman to keep our local lobstermen fishing, and we won millions in funding for local water quality projects.

ocumentary producer Diomedes Bermudez will present a short film trailer on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Tropic Cinema about Patrick B. Garvey’s work to rescue the tropical paradise on Big Pine Key called Grimal Grove.

When Adolf Grimal travelled to Big Pine Key in the late 1950’s he stumbled upon his life’s purest mission. This hermit, engineer, adventurer and genius spent the next 40 years of his life tirelessly building his own Garden of Eden.

The wiry inventor who looked more like a chemist than a lumberjack singlehandedly developed an engineering wonder. From sun-up to sun-down he chiseled, dug, dynamited, and created a tropical fruit paradise in a part of the world once considered impossible for growing.

The tragedy in his life-long obsession is that he never planned for the future: Who was going to look after the love of his life? When he died his once beautiful land was abandoned.

His beloved trees went neglected. For the next 15 years the Grimal Grove was

forgotten.

But, when an adventurer by the name of Patrick Garvey stumbled upon the property, he too found his life’s purest mission.

“Old Man and the Grove” captures the obsession and sense of duty as Patrick Garvey risks it all to save another man’s dream along with the passion, sacrifice and lunacy both men were driven by to build something inspirational not only for themselves, but for the community.

Kala released after ‘flipperectomy’ Turtle Hospital returns four turtles to the ocean JASON KOLER

hen the northerly winds settled down this past Wednesday Turtle Hospital Manager Bette Zirkelbach made the call.

Kala, a 215-pound green sea turtle would be returned to her home … sans one flipper.

She was rescued by the FWC on Aug. 30 when a family found her near Molasses Reef. The distressed turtle

had ingested fishing line and had become entangled in both monofilament and had a trap line wrapped tightly around her front flipper.

“We worked furiously to try to save her flipper with laser therapy and in-water physical training sessions three times a day,” Zirkelbach said. Due to the amount of time the flipper was without circulation, Zirkelbach enlisted the help of Marathon Veterinary Hospital’s Dr. Doug Mader, who amputated the flipper.

“Kala healed well and is able to

survive in the wild with three good functioning flippers,” Zirkelbach reported.

Kala is one of 71 turtles admitted to the Turtle Hospital this year due to entanglements, accidents and those suffering from the Fibropapillomatosis virus which causes tumor growth significant enough to impair swimming and eating.

Lessons from the local election of 2008

uring this election season, where we will be voting for everything from President of the United States to releasing GMO mosquitoes, let’s take a quick look back in time. Election Day 2008 went down in history as one of the most important and most unique elections ever. Over 80 percent of registered voters in Monroe County turned out to cast their ballots, a turnout likely to be mirrored (if not exceeded) this year. As of deadline time, more than 40 percent of voters have already early- or absentee-voted. That is just awesome. But let’s isolate a specific number from 2008: 12,368. That’s the number of registered voters in Monroe County who cast a ballot for a particular candidate for office.

Specifically, Mosquito Control Board.

More specifically, the Republican candidate for the JOHN District 1 seat.

As anyone who has lived here for any length of time understands, I realize that the Keys are populated with colorful characters. Now and again, some decide to run for public office, as is their right. The aforementioned Mr. Williams told everyone at the outset of his campaign that he was reformed and recovering. No more Bolivian Marching Powder. As it turned out, that might not have been an accurate evaluation of his condition at the time. It was front-page news on all the papers that he failed a drug test and was again arrested on the eve of the election. No one tried to keep this a secret from the voters.

Still, 12,368 people voted for the jailed candidate who tested positive for cocaine. Anyone got a mirror and a razor blade?

Williams actually won three precincts and came close in several others, mostly in the Upper Keys. Which precincts actually gave the majority of their votes to the incarcerated drug test failure? No. 29 – the Key Largo Civic Club, No. 24 – the Islamorada Library, and ironically, No. 25 – Plantation Key Courtroom B. Honorable mention goes to Precinct 26, the Immanuel Lutheran Church, just five votes shy of endorsing cocaine as an official mosquito control chemical. Don’t be too smug, other areas of the Keys — Williams got a lot of votes in every precinct, nearly 34 percent of all the votes cast in that race.

The only theory I can come up with that makes any sense is that close to 12,368 voters simply cast their ballot along party lines and didn’t bother to learn anything about the candidate they supported. Well, hats off to you, real men and women of genius.

This illustrates perfectly the problem with ignorant or straight ticket voting — sometimes you end up casting a ballot for a total buffoon who has no business representing anyone as an elected official. I want someone who can read the lines of a multi-million-dollar mosquito control budget without trying to snort the lines off the page. I want someone who knows chemicals, and not just nose chemicals.

And finally, I want more than anything an educated and informed electorate to go to the polls on Election Day. If you haven’t already early- or absentee-voted (and good for you if you did), please go to the polls and cast an informed ballot for the future of the Keys, our state, and our nation.

Being able to choose our leaders through voting is a sacred right and an awesome privilege. Make your voice heard.

pril “Lady Bug” Williams has been working at Nowhere Bar & Grill since June, keeping good tabs on her customers at the bar. She’s a blur of action — adding carefully chosen leaves of mint to the lime already in the glass, a gentle pummel, then splashing in the rum and soda water and just a hint of sweetness for the perfect mojito.

She said the mojito goes best with the coconut shrimp entrée. But, personally, she advocates for Jose Cuervo chilled and served with a dash of salt and a bit of lime. That, she said, she would pair with the Don’t Cry For Me Argentina Churasco.

“I’m in a better mood when I’m drinking tequila. It makes me happy and hyper,” she said.

When she isn’t bartending, April is building pools. It’s hands on work — digging the hole, putting the pool in, leveling the deck, pouring the concrete.

“I like working in the sun,” she said, shrugging her shoulders.

In terms of activities, Dr. Makimaa says, “There are many shoes that are lightweight, those should be used for racing or speed work. The problem comes when people wear a lightweight shoe and go on 10-mile run. The lack of support can cause stress fractures.”

• Interested in a minimalist-style running shoe? Dr. Makimaa advises runners to transition slowly.

“Having a minimalist shoe is fine, but be aware of the running style it encourages. ‘0 drop’ shoes promote running on the forefoot or mid-foot. A change to a minimalist shoe should be a slow progression,” says Dr. Makimaa.

arathon student-athletes may be having a hard trying finding running and sport-specific cleated shoes throughout the Keys. The Weekly recently surveyed 26 varsity athletes at Marathon High School to capture a sample of local shoe shopping experiences and gauge the difficulty some had in locating the right pair of kicks.

The survey revealed that of the 26 athletes surveyed, none had purchased the shoes they needed in the Florida Keys. Fifteen purchased their shoes on the mainland, while 11 ordered their shoes online. When asked how easily they were able to find the shoes they needed, the majority of respondents described their experience as “somewhat hard.” Of the 26 surveyed, 23 said they felt it was “very important” to have the right shoes for the sports they participated in; the remaining three choose “somewhat important.”

• Exactly how important is it to have the proper shoes when at play, though?

Dr. Bradley Makimaa, of Southernmost Foot and Ankle and a triathlete himself, says that the importance of having the correct running shoe boils down to two factors.

“Athletes should make sure they have the correct shoe for their type of foot and for the type of activity they are doing,” he said.

There are three types of running shoes says Dr. Makimaa – cushioned, stability, and motion control shoes.

“Cushioned shoes are for a neutral foot that doesn’t pronate. The stability shoe provides more support to control excess pronation and motion controls shoes are an extreme version of support, assisting severe collapsing

• When purchasing cleated shoes, athletes should try to get sport and position specific shoes says Dr. Makimaa.

“Cleats run a little tighter, so I always recommend athletes try out a few sizes. There is a lot of variability in sizes from model to model. Having the correct width is another issues people tend to overlook, and probably the most common fitting mistake I see,” he says.

Overseas Outfitters of Marathon doesn’t stock as many cleats as it used to, according to owner Jeremy Peterson.

“The only cleats we do carry are for youth soccer. AYSO’s popularity drives those sales,” Peterson said. “We previously stocked baseball, softball, football, and adult soccer cleats, but had to stop stocking those cleats due to lack of demand.”

Peterson says the athletic shoe market has become difficult overall, citing the advent of online shopping, though Overseas Outfitters does offer special orders on “anything he can get” for customers.

With so much to consider when purchasing their next pair of kicks, Marathon’s athletes should ask local experts for a leg-up.

36th Annual Key West World Championship boat races right around the corner uper Boat International offshore races are some of the most spectacular races in the world. With local racers and pit crews, and princes, and geckos, and more, the races always excite the spectators. Meet the crews in the dry pits at Race Village and watch favorites race the rectangular racecourse off Truman Waterfront at speeds topping 180 mph. Practices will be happening all week, with races on Wednesday, Friday, and the final day on Sunday. Here’s more highlights of race week:

1. SEE THE PARADE On Sunday, Nov. 6 starting at 4 p.m. the race boats will parade down Duval Street via trailers and big, big trucks passing out candy, beads, and more.

Wave to the throttle men, the drivers, and their families as they pass by the street’s restaurants and bars on their way to the dry pits.

2. VISIT THE RACE VILLAGE Starting from Sunday, Nov. 6 through the final race day on Sunday, Nov. 13, Race Village at Truman Annex waterfront will be open to the public until 5 p.m. daily. Visit with the teams, buy merchandise and win free swag from the boat sponsors.

3. WATCH THE RACES Race Day #1 is Wednesday, Nov. 9, Race Day #2 is Friday, Nov. 11 with the first race at 10 a.m. and fourth race at 2:30 p.m. All races take place in front of the Truman Waterfront and are visible from other properties along that side of the island.

Regular admission allows access to the outer mole. The outer mole is also home to food and drink booths and swag tents. Other places to watch include Mallory Square, Fort Zachary Taylor, and from the various resorts and restaurants along the shoreline.

4. PARTY WITH THE RACERS Hangout with the racers on Friday, Nov. 11 from 7 to 11 p.m. at their favorite haunts. The race boats will grace Duval Street again, but this time staged in front of the bars and restaurants of their sponsors. Mosey along the closed-off streets and ogle the boats landside.

5. LAST CHANCE The final races take place on Sunday, Nov. 13. The first race starts at 10 a.m. and the fourth race is at 2:30 p.m.

The VIP tent is located at the outer mole and tickets include lunch and premium bathrooms. Regular admission allows access to the outer mole, which is perfect for watching the race boats launch, and land from the wet pits with unobstructed views of the races on the oceanside. Wear good walking shoes, it’s a hike. Cars will be lined up on the waterfront at Fort Zachary tailgating — earlier arrivals will get prime parking with park admission.

Another prime spot to watch from is by boat from the designated spots in the harbor, like around Sunset Key.
