Challenge Accepted Coin challenge tradition continues GABRIEL SANCHEZ

n nearly every nook and cranny of military life there’s tradition. One favorite, which extends to every branch of service and government, is the challenge coin. Challenge coins are small coins that are custom made to display an individual military organization’s insignia or emblem. For some higher ranking officers, diplomats, and members of government, custom coins are also crafted. They are awarded to personnel in recognition of accomplishments from unit commanders with the purpose of raising troop morale. The coins themselves can be made of simple metals like pewter while some of the more important coins are fashioned from 24k gold. The passing A coin from the Wounded of a coin is done so in a handshake. Warrior Project. Some say the tradition is rooted in the RoCONTRIBUTED/ LEE DIEHL man Empire, and its custom of awarding coins to soldiers for their achievements. Other competing origin stories stem from WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. The popularity of the challenge coin has extended outside of the military — police departments, fire departments, and other fraternal organizations now produce their own coins. NASCAR, the NFL, Civil Air Patrol, and the Eagle Scouts have also made their own coins. “It’s an honor to be a part of such a great The reverse side of the tradition,” said Florida Highway Trooper, and President’s coin. Marathon native, Lee Diehl. “It is a tradition of CONTRIBUTED/ LEE DIEHL the Florida Highway Patrol that each class design a coin to be given to friends and family upon graduation of the academy.” But exactly how do you “challenge” someone? To initiate a challenge, the challenger need only pull their coin from their pocket and slap it down on the table or bar. Those who have been challenged are to then pull out their own coins in a “coin check.” Don’t have a coin? Then buy a drink for the challenger. Do have a coin? The challenger buys. There are some variations, of course. For instance, everyone in a group must buy a drink for the “highest ranking” coin. For example, President of the United States coinholders may never have to buy a drink again. Even local American Legion Post 154 have put their twist on the tradition of challenging. “I was given my first coin by the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization when I was post Commander in Key Largo years ago,” said The personal coin of MaraJohn Dick, commander of Marathon’s Amerithon Fire Marshal Adam can Legion Post 154. “It was given as a chalGeaneas. lenge to our VFW post to remember those who gave all. I decided to take that challenge, begin special Remembrance Day events, and carry that tradition here to the Legion Post.” G.I.s would be wise to have their coins handy on Veterans Day, if only as a story prompt. Don’t be caught empty handed.

DARE I SAY IT

‘Did you kill anyone?’ Because there is such a thing as a dumb question

Weekly staffer Gabriel Sanchez, center, served in the Marines.

T

he difficult transition of both deploying and then returning from a theater of war is a long and humbling experience. Here’s what DOESN’T help: When someone asks, “Did you kill anyone?” The first time someone asked me that, I didn’t know what to say. This person was a full-grown adult, who I assumed would know better. But then it continued to happen. I would say I’ve been asked that question at least two dozen times. Even more puzzling, is the perGABRIEL ception that veterans WANT to answer that question. SANCHEZ Here’s the long answer, it’s complicated. Let’s use the anecdote of “Petty Officer F:” … is a Marathon While working alongside a Marine Corps supply and native, Navy veterlogistics unit, Petty Officer F befriended a young female an, and struggling musician. He’s Marine who coordinated supplies for adjacent comliving proof that mands on base. The two would often work out together great things … are and practice techniques taught in MCMAP (the Marine short and have good hair (includ- Corps Martial Arts Program.) One day, while doing some mat-work together, the young Marine took a blow to her ing facial). Sixty percent of the head. The next day, her body was found slumped inside time, he makes of a portable bathroom stall. It was determined that she 90 percent of the had died from a brain aneurism the night before. deadlines. The months that followed saw the Marine Corps, her family, and even his own leadership point the finger at Petty Officer F. Following a lengthy investigation, and months of blame seeking, the incident was deemed a freak accident. But this wasn’t the end of the ordeal for Petty Officer F. For years I saw my friend struggle with guilt, nightmares, PTSD, self-hate and depression. So, imagine the difficulty Petty Officer F faces every single time someone asks him, “Did you kill someone?” It’s complicated. Regardless of how war and its after-effects are portrayed in popular culture, I assure you it is very different. And while there are so many questions we can ask our veterans to better understand their experiences, asking someone if they took someone’s life, regardless of the situation, has no place. There is nothing to gain from this knowledge, there is no purpose in asking about the morbid details of someone’s death. I challenge you to thank a service member this Veterans Day, and when the time comes to ask something, ask them “How many people did you help?” That’s an order.

Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, president of Florida Keys Community College, poses with Jerry Wilkinson, right, a local Air Force veteran honored this past Saturday.

College salutes veterans Special honor goes to Jerry Wilkinson

“A

t our Community Day festivities on Saturday, we celebrated the many members of our vibrant community with whom Florida Keys Community College is privileged to serve and partner. One sector within our community deserves particular recognition, honor, and gratitude: military service members,” said Gueverra. “I express my sincerest thanks to them and their families for their dedication and commitment, and for their continued service to protect our freedom.” Gueverra singled out one particular local individual: Jerry Wilkinson, an entrepreneur, historian, philanthropist, artist, adventurer, and 22-year Air Force veteran. Long before Jerry Wilkinson permanently joined the Keys community in the 1980s, he first ventured to Key West aboard a motorcycle in 1947. While in Key West, the young Wilkinson quickly noticed a challenge in seeking lady friends as the swarms of sailors on the island had him sorely outnumbered. So he decided that if he couldn’t beat them, he should join them. He applied to the Navy, but did not pass the vision test. Fortunately, though, the Army Air Corp was right across the hall, and from there he embarked on his military career. Eager and hard-working, Wilkinson soon climbed to the positions of drill instructor and eventually special electronics instructor. In those roles, he discovered his passion for teaching. He enjoyed preparing scores of young soldiers—who were barely yet adults at the time — to be physically and mentally prepared for whatever their missions may bring. In 1955, during the Korean War, Wilkinson was deployed to Guam. For two years, he was part of an Aircraft

Control and Warning Squadron that repaired disabled aircraft and returned them back to action. In 1958, post-Korean War and amid The Cold War, Wilkinson took part in a mission with our allies to build a “radar fence” around Russia. He studied Spanish in Washington D.C. before being sent to Spain for four years to train Spanish Air Force radar operators. Wilkinson’s military career concluded with the Vietnam War during which he served two years as an Electronics Superintendent at a radar station in Alaska. He retired in 1970 as a Command Sergeant Major after 22 years of service. That was just the beginning of Wilkinson’s adventures. He spent the next 10 years with his wife Mary Lou, rotating between Key Largo — teaching windsurfing; Colorado — guiding river raft tours; and California — taking college classes. With the GI Bill and a love for education, he ultimately earned seven associate degrees. The Wilkinsons eventually settled in Tavernier in 1988. Very soon a new passion was ignited. He became enthralled with the rich history of the Florida Keys and began his quest to research, archive, and preserve records of the islands’ unique stories, culture, and ecology. Earlier this year, Wilkinson donated $100,000 to the FKCC Foundation to establish a scholarship that will provide scholarships for worthy FKCC students in perpetuity. Wilkinson is a true champion for education and a treasure to our community and our nation. “May such service, achievements, and generosity serve as an inspiration for all,” said Gueverra. — Contributed

After the war Henry Fuller: Vietnam Veteran

ARMY SGT. KENNY CELLILO First Calvary Division, Vietnam

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

A

lthough Vietnam was 48 years ago for local Henry Fuller, much of it is still with him today. A mere 20 years old, Fuller was sent off to war from the safety of his childhood island Key West and found himself in an airplane over the central highlands of Vietnam near Pleiku and in the “Iron Triangle.” Learning aviation mechanics, Fuller was a crew chief in charge of flight checks and being aboard aircraft during battle. Sometimes manning a gun himself, Fuller spent many years not talking about his experiences. “It’s war, it’s one incident after another, losing a friend or having to do something you regretted. It stays with you a long time,” said Fuller. He was there during 1968 which he describes as “the year the sh*# hit the fan.” At one point, his hand was injured in a flare accident and he found himself working with the indigenous kids filling sand bags. He joked, “One minute I was fighting and the next I was babysitting.” Fuller served 19 months and was grateful to return uninjured, arms and legs still intact. But the PTSD remained and it took years for Fuller to get help, acknowledging he spent many years withdrawn and secluded. “I didn’t realize the affect on my family.” Now Fuller is an advocate for getting help. “You gotta talk about it,” he said full of spirit and laughed, “now I have to join everything.”

“I support every single soldier but not war. War is hell,” said Fuller. These days, he finds ways to give back to soldiers. He helped organize assistance for returning Desert Storm troops and their families. And this Veteran’s Day, Fuller will be at the Vietnam Memorial at Bayview Park for the 11 a.m. ceremony honoring his fellow soldiers, and then off to the American Legion 168 Post on Emma Street to help with Habitat for Humanity’s renovations. It seems Fuller can’t help but serve his country in more ways than one.

“I was sitting on the plane on my way home from Vietnam, and the man sitting next to me mentioned my Purple Hearts, two of them,” said Army veteran Kenny Cellilo from his Big Pine Key home. “I didn’t even know what they were at that time.” Drafted in 1968 Veteran Kenny and serving a year Cellilo was overseas with two wounded in the years under his belt, war. he was sent home with shrapnel in his head and a nose that still bleeds today when he’s out riding his bike each morning for exercise. As soon as he returned from war, his brother, a Navy Seal, left for Korea. “They would never send two brothers at the same time, for our mother’s sake,” he said. His brother also received a Purple Heart. Cellilo didn’t touch a gun again until 2008, when he got his concealed weapons permit. Now he shoots all the time. “It’s a lot nicer to shoot at the range where people aren’t shooting back at you.”

RET. CHIEF PETTY OFFICER CHIP JEWELL U.S. NAVY

ARMY SCOTT CATES VIETNAM VETERAN

Retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years, Chief Petty Officer (E-7) Chip Jewell spent his time as a Gunner’s Mate and Search and Rescue Swimmer. He traveled worldwide during his time of service, and said his favorite spots were all in Europe. After he was transferred to Key West, he decided this was the place he wanted to retire, and now does government contracting and is a small business owner in town. “I was broken down on the side of the road in a little Mini Cooper with smoke coming out of it,” said friend, Kirsten Difender. “I popped my head around the side and there was Chip to help.” Jewell pushed the Cooper to a safe spot off the road and the two have been friends ever since. “It says a lot about his character right there; he never stopped protecting and serving,” said Difender.

Drafted, Key Wester Scott Cates went from his island home to the helm of a 56ton tank in Vietnam. Only trained as a light vehicle operator in basic training, an E2 position, Cates quickly learned to drive a tank, an E6 position. He was sent to areas like Pleiku, in the Central Highlands and near Cam Ranh Bay to clean up battle zones. Cates turned 21 while serving in Vietnam. Cates was an integral part of helping get the Key West Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Bayview Park.

‘I wouldn’t trade the experience for a million dollars,’ said Vietnam veteran Scott Cates, ‘but, I wouldn’t go back there for ten million.’

With the amazing weather, the boundless areas to fly and the after hours spearfishing, it’s a pilot’s dream. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Captain Baker started his career at West Point and entered the Army. Afterwards, he was headed to medical school but a buddy helped him realize flying fighter jets for the Navy was infinitely more exciting. (Thus his call name “Beetle,” after Beetle Bailey from the Army). Now with a 20-year career behind him, Captain Baker is an accomplished F-18 fighter pilot, completed two deployments embarked on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), lived in Germany, Italy, England (Oxford University as a Senior Fellow at St. Antony’s College), and two deployments embarked in USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. But Captain Baker isn’t the stereotypical stodgy military brass. Easy going and positive, he’s got a few funny stories to tell about his adventures. He has already fallen in love Key West’s clear blue skies because really let’s face it, as he says, “Flying is awesome.”

9. How high have you flown? Let’s just say 50,000 and leave it at that. 10. What was your first thought this morning? I love Daylight Savings. 11. Favorite guilty pleasure? Twizzlers. 12. What misconception do people have about the Navy? People don’t realize how young, professional and diverse the Navy is. 13. If not the Navy, then what dream job would you have? Professional soccer player, Barcelona, Real Madrid or my favorite team, Bayern Munich. 14. If you could change someone’s opinion, what would it be? People are too pessimistic. They need to see the glass as half full, not half empty.

Baker has logged more than 3,400 flight hours, 104 combat sorties and 778 carrier landings. His individual awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with combat V, five Strike/Flight Air Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals (one with combat V), Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Commander Carrier Air Wing One Pilot of the Year, and the LCDR Michael Longardt Award for Leadership from Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic.

Questions: 1. Full Name: Captain Bobby John Baker 2. Worst nickname? Mule — the mascot at West Point was a jackass.

15. You are sitting at a diner counter eating. Who would you want to walk in and sit next to you? Brooke Shields. (Ironically, that did happen in a little movie called “Chalet Girl” when Captain Baker was an extra on the movie set.) 16. Scariest moment flying? Either the time I lost an engine landing on an aircraft carrier at night, or the time my canopy was open landing on a carrier at night. (He’s been shot at, too.)

3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Steve Jobs so we can have more Apple products

Finish these sentences …

4. Who’s your favorite TV or movie about the military? “Apocalypse Now,” the scene with the Huey’s …

18. My autobiography would be titled … “Be Careful What you Ask for You Just Might Get it.”

5. What’s the funniest thing about all the commanders in Key West? They never leave! They have all retired here.

19. “Top Gun,” the movie … makes me want to put on dog tags and play beach volleyball.

6. Which TV, movie or super hero character is your alter ego? I wish I could be Obi Wan.

17. My wife would describe me as … Rico Suave.

20. I almost was … a doctor. I was headed to med school but decided to fly jets instead.

KWHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

KEY WEST WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 11, 2016 The Key West Weekly is proud to partner with Key West High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude.

Join us on Thanksgiving

GAVIN WILLIS SENIOR

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am treasurer of the National Honor Society which is valuable to me because it promotes hard work, service and scholarship. I am the president of the International Club, which is instrumental in teaching students about cultural differences and how we are all uniquely different but yet wonderfully alike. I am also a member of First Priority Club, the Academic Challenge Team and participate in Mu Alpha Theta. It was also an honor to be a part of the inaugural Varsity Lacrosse team, which taught me tremendous hard work and teamwork.

Opening early this year at 3pm! This Thanksgiving, hang up your apron and find a place at our table. At Tavern N Town, we’re serving a feast of familiar holiday favorites that suggests there’s no better place than Tavern N Town to count your Thanksgiving blessings.

Thanksgiving Dinner 3pm – 10pm For Reservations Call 305-296-8100 Always use your TNT local card for 15% discount

Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Ms. Laubenstein was instrumental in making me realize I had a voice and my ideas mattered. Mrs. Laubenstein and Ms. Valeski made history and government come alive and inspire me, which is why I plan to pursue history, public policy and law in college and grad school. Mr. Whaley taught me perseverance, and that no challenge was ever too great. Mr. Perkins has also had a tremendous impact on me. His advice has given me perspective on challenging situations. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Mr. Whaley’s pre-calculus class has best prepared me for life after high school. It was the first class in which I had to seriously push myself. Precalculus didn’t come as naturally to me as other subjects and I spend a ton of time studying to reinforce concepts learned in class. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys/ What would you do to meet these challenges? I would have to say literacy is one of the greatest issues facing the Keys today. I realized that not many kids my age enjoy reading or spend free time reading. I met this challenge by starting a book swap at Sugarloaf School. In 2015, kids turned in and swapped 1,800 books they wanted to read. I also collected books for Samuel House and made a small teen library. We all can do our part. What are your plans after high school? I want to attend law school.

Early bird special not available on Holidays.

‘Alice’ comes to Key West Fringe Theater opens season on Nov. 16

F

ringe Theater Key West opens its season with its annual fundraiser “Alice’s Parlor” in the Parish Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopalian Church. Show dates are Wednesday to Sunday, Nov. 16-20 with a 7 p.m. curtain. This collection of short plays, written by Alice Gerstenberg and her friends, is acted and directed by locals. “Audiences just love seeing their friends and neighbors on stage alongside folks who’ve been acting in Key West for years,” said Janet Bengel, Fringe’s board president. “It’s a great learning opportunity. And always entertaining for the audience!” “Alice’s Parlor” features six directors and 23 actors in six plays written in and around 1916. The plays themes tackle issues that are still relevant 100 years later. • The show opens with Susan Glaspell’s popular murder mystery “Trifles.” Did a farmhouse wife kill her husband? This evocative story is directed by Annie Miners and features Rebecca Gleason, Jeanne Tindel, John McDonald, Don Bearden, and Bob Rowand. • “The Game,” written by journalist Louise Bryant (on whom the movie “Reds” was based), personifies the relationship between Life and Death as they throw the dice to determine fates. “The Game” is directed by Deb Kik and features Deborah Jacobson, Mathias Maloff, Morgan Fraga, and John Van Norden. • In Susan Glaspell’s “Woman’s Honor,” a young man would rather hang than reveal the identity of his lover which rallies women with hilarious results. “Woman’s Honor” is directed by Alicia Merel and features Diane May, Don Bearden, Donna Stabile, Joan Sullivan, John Van Norden,

Mia Shawn, Marisa Faraldo, and Monique Griffin. • "The Rescue,” written by Rita Creighton Smith, explores the effect heredity may have on issues of suicide and depression, and is credited as the origin of Eugene O'Neil's theme for “Strange Interlude.” “The Rescue” is directed by Karen Leonard and features Karen Grant, Susan Butler, and Deborah Snelgrove. • JM Barrie, better known as the creator of Peter Pan, explores the suffocating roles or social and cultural expectations in his short play “The Twelve Pound Look.” This parlor comedy is directed by Richard Grusin and features Ellen Rickert, John McDonald, Stephanie Miller, and Traci Reynolds. • “The Illuminati in Drama Libre,” written by Alice Gerstenberg, explores surrealism as a theatrical device. “Illuminati” is directed by Rebecca Tomlinson and features Alicia Merel and Don Beardon. Will Alice herself be there to greet her parlor guests as in year’s past? “I suppose the audience will have to drop by for a visit to find out,” smiles Alicia Merel, the production’s coordinator. Alice’s Parlor runs Nov. 16-20 at 7pm in the Parish Hall at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 401 Duval St. There is no parking on church property, though city parking is available near the church. Tickets can be purchased online at www.fringetheater.org or by calling 305-731-0581. WAR MOVIES

Some picks for Veterans Day HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

“Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.” — Gen. George Patton, “Patton” (1970)

The Next Generation F-35 Jet test flies at the NAS HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

t $130,000,000 a pop, the F-35 better be cool and, well, they kind of are. The new F-35’s Joint Strike fighter jets are the fifth generation of U.S. aircraft available in 3 versions: the F-35A (Alpha), the F-35B (Bravo) which is able to do vertical take off and landing, and the F-35C (Charlie) with an aircraft carrier tailhook. Dubbed “the quarterback of the sky,” what makes them so special? First, the advanced technology or Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) allows the plane to basically fly itself. Now, pilots will spend less time operating the plane and can focus more on their mission. Second, it is the first jet with a pilot visualization system or DAS (Distributed Aperture System). This is a system of infrared cameras on the plane allowing the pilot to see in any direction, even “through” the aircraft. The pilot’s helmet (average cost $400,000) will seemingly look through the floor of the airplane and track anything with a heat sensor — wayyy cool. The F-35’s were conceived in the early ’90s, but not contracted until 2001, and now finally being tested in 2016. Called out for being billions over budget and “most expensive weapon in history,” the new jet is having to prove its salt. But it also has the potential of being the most stealthy and lethal weapon, aside from the advancement of drones. Pilots who previously flew Super Hornets for the Navy are now being retrained to fly the F-35 C, and it is happening here in Key West. C/O of the NAS Captain Baker has welcomed ten F-35C (Navy-Aircraft carrier versions) to practice in Key West. “They are the wave of the future in order to keep up with our adversaries,” said Captain Baker. The Boca Chica NAS did a 2013 environmental impact study and prepared to have the jets test fly in local skies. “This version of F-35 is not louder than the Hornet,” reassures Trice Denny, NAS public affairs officer, addressing usual local concern about jet noise. “It may sound different but it is not louder.”

It’s always happy hour New smartphone app is the ticket to free drinks

R

emember those small “Buy One, Get One Free” cards you pick up at a hotel or airport? Those are now a thing of the past with the advent of a smartphone app. It’s greener, easier, and available anytime to anyone. That was the thinking behind David Thibault’s new app, Free Libations. Having been in the hospitality business for more than 25 years, Thibault has created an app that promises a free drink, benefitting both businesses and customers alike. “Hundreds of BOGO cards would go out a month,” said Thibault, who spent years as a concierge, “so when the iPhone came out, I just figured there had to be a better way to do this.” Free Libations is in the beginning stages and Thibault, a 15-year resident, is using Key West as the test market. Users can download the app for free to a phone and log in with Facebook. (Logging in with Facebook ensures the reviews are authored by real people, not anonymous internet trolls.) The phone’s GPS feature registers the city and shows users available restaurants with happy hour specials. The restaurants marked by the signature “olive” logo will be able to scan the phone and register the customer for the free drink. Businesses registered with the app will attract customers and anyone with the app can partake in not just the “BOGO” but any other specials or advantages being offered. Some restrictions apply, and there is a 12-hour waiting period for the first free drink.

“Participating bars include Island Dogs, Half Shell Raw Bar, The Rum Barrel, Charlie Mac’s, Turtle Kraals, and Señor Frog’s. We’re looking for more.” —David Thibault, developer of Free Libations.

Find ‘Free Libations’ in the Apple iTunes store. The app is free.

“I started from zero, just an idea,” said Thibault. Thibault partnered with Ben Hennington of the Sunset Social Drinking Club for managing and marketing and used local website designers 7th Wave. After great success during Parrothead week, Thibault is taking the app to Nashville and developing the next market there. Soon cities around the country will have affiliated bars and restaurants and free drinks for everyone with a phone — which is basically everyone. Although the app is a mere two months old, developments are in rapid progress such as working with hotel concierges, being able to buy drinks for other people, coordinate scavenger hunts between bars, and a special Free Libations Tervis cup for more discounts. Thibault has lots of ideas for the app and Key West undoubtably is the perfect demographic.

SUSANNE EAST-BROOKE www.keysweekly.com

C

oming from a musical family, singer-songwriter Dani Hoy started playing guitar at age 12. Over the years she also sang with church and school choirs and did some community music theater. But it wasn't until 2009 that she put singing and playing guitar together. She got her singer-songwriter start doing open mic nights and eventually made her way from Pennsylvania to Key West where she is now living the life she really wanted. Dani is mainly known for her contributions to the “Trop Rock” genre. She was BeachFront radio's Top Female Artist of the year and was nominated as Female Vocalist of the year by Trop Rock Music Associa-

tion. But for her newly released third CD, “At the End of a Long Road,” she's moving towards an Americana sound, influenced by musicians like John Hyatt, Lucinda Williams and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Recording “At the End of a Long Road” is a study in 21st century musical collaboration. Dani worked with her producer Kevin Johnston at Orca Sound Studios who recruited wellknown Nashville studio artists Kenny Vaughan, Dave Roe and Jerry Roe. The backdrop for the album was planned via Skype and recorded in a studio, then Dani completed the vocals with Key West producer Ian Shaw. For Dani, songs are like short movies, and the five new songs on "At the End of a Long Road" are like five separate reels. From "Not Enough Rum" which is a country heartache

tune with a Key West twist (with rum instead of whiskey) about a person traveling a lot and not being able to be with someone they love; to "Coffee Drinking Girl" which is a blues song about girl full of caffeine and confidence. Dani's music is available at DaniHoy.com, Amazon, and iTunes. Dani can be heard at Grunts every Thursday and Sunday from 8-11 p.m. and at Rick’s on Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. Dani and fellow musicians Chris Rehm (guitar) and Bob Tucker (bass) can also be heard around town with their combo called “The Shanty Hounds.” While playing the bar scene is fun, Dani also really likes bringing her music to house concert audiences. She's traveled around Florida and enjoys the people who want to hear the music and stories behind the songs.

artender Seth Tuten soaks up the laidback family atmosphere at The Salty Angler, located at 1114 Duval St. and enjoys shaking up cocktails for his customers at the bar. He’s been working at the restaurant since it opened last year after moving to town from Baltimore, Maryland. His favorite is the Salty Rumrunner on the rocks. Rimmed with house-smoked hickory salt, the sweeter drink is made with flavored liqueurs rather than fruit juices. “The salt really works well to balance the sweetness,” he said. Tuten’s has ever-changing taste buds, and says his favorite thing on the menu this week is the thunder thighs — hickory smoked sweet and spicy chicken. He added that the menu items are all so delicious that his favorite changes from week to week. When he isn’t working, he joked that he is usually sitting by his phone waiting for phone calls from work, but said his favorite activities include heading to the sandbar at Marvin, fishing, and visiting his other bartender friends around town.

KWHS’ Homecoming Court

K

ey West celebrated its annual homecoming this past weekend — the time honored event encompasses the best of American traditions: high school football, pep rallies and dances. Key West High School’s homecoming court looked their best in handsome tuxedos and elegant gowns. Key West should be proud of their young adults who exhibited grace, poise and beauty representing the Fighting Conchs. — Weekly Staff report

o part of a service member’s uniform is more important than their hat or, in military jargon, their “cover.” Starting in boot camp, military members are instructed on how to properly wear their covers, how to maintain them, label them, and even on which part of the cover a hand salute is rendered. A service member wears a handful of various covers, some of which pair specifically with dress or working uniforms. Covers are a big deal, and have strict rules to their proper wear both indoors and outdoors. Some covers have even taken on an iconic status in pop culture, such as the Navy’s white hat, or Dixie Cup in “squid” language, which just became part of the women’s dress uniform for the first time in history. The Keys Weekly is challenging readers to take the test. Match the hat to the correct branch of service by drawing a line from the numerals, to the letters of the alphabet — just like a Kindergarten worksheet. The answers are at the bottom of the page.
