There’s a giddy thrill that comes with executing a good prank. You don’t have to be one of the Three Stooges or Ashton Kutcher to plan it out, either. As expected, the Weekly ran across a handful of pranksters who were finally ready to come clean about their misdeeds. The Keys Weekly asked locals …
What’s the meanest prank you’ve ever pulled? Brian Olshefski said, “I found a hundred pounds of gun powder one time and placed a tiny bit behind my brother’s bench grinder in his workshop. Needless to say, it scared the heck out of him.”
“Back in college a few friends and I grabbed my roommate out of the shower, wrapped her in the shower curtain, drove her to the grocery store, where we shoved her in a shopping cart and pushed it into the main opening,” said Joanne Birdsall, of The History of Diving Museum.
John Watson, historian at the History of Diving Museum said, “My mom worked late as a nurse when I was young. One time when she came home to sleep I put shaving cream on her hand, and tickled her nose with a feather. I still feel bad about it.”
“Being on the boat fishing, we have a good laugh when an angler falls asleep in the fighting chair. So when we know they’re out cold, we sneak a five pound bucket on the line and let them fight to the bitter end,” said Capt. Skip Bradeen of the Blue Chip Too.
Tamika Martin, of Subway in Islamorada, said “I got pulled over with friends and the police asked we step out of the car. I pretended to be a mute so I wouldn’t have to go through the inconvenience. It totally worked. That was bad.”

Dillon’s Pub & Grill
T
ina Zimmerman likes whisky, specifically, Jameson Irish Whisky, which is apropos because she works at Dillon’s Pub and Grill. Her favorite drink to serve at the Irish pub in Tavernier is, of course, made with Jameson — the Irish Car Bomb. The drink starts with a half-filled pint of Guinness beer with a shot glass filled with equal parts Jameson and Bailey’s Irish Cream. The shot is then dropped into the beer and “chugged.” “Just don’t order the drink by this name if you’re anywhere near Ireland, though,” she advised. (Bad etiquette.) Zimmerman pours a lot of Jameson for her customers and her coworkers. She said that it’s just about “the whole staff’s favorite drink.” Zimmerman, who moved here nine years ago from Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, has been at Dillon’s since. When she’s not behind the bar or drinking Jameson, she’s at home petting her four beloved cats. Yes, four cats. Zimmerman confirmed she’s “at full capacity.” Zimmerman also loves to garden. She grows vegetables and herbs and anything else she can keep going, including orchids. Dillon’s Pub is located at MM 91 in the Tavernier Towne Plaza.

eorge Patti and Tom Smith are cocky. And for good reason. Their burgers — an 80/20 blend of brisket and ground chuck — have won the awards. “To be honest, it’s been dozens and we stopped counting,” says Smith in a matter-of-fact tone from his office at MM 88 in Islamorada. Since the restaurant M.E.A.T. opened less than five years ago, Trip Advisor named their burger the No. 5 burger in the country in 2014 and for the last two years they captured the Judges’ Choice award at the Boca Burger Battle. Founded in Islamorada, the duo opened a second eatery and taproom in Boca Raton in 2014 and enjoys a growing following on the food circuit. At the most recent Boca Burger Battle, the crew of four alongside Smith and Patti served 700 burgers in about four hours. “We knew it was going to be insane, so we had an air conditioner blowing on our people, so no one would fall-out,” Smith boasted. The Islamorada resident and father of one attributes their rising success to several factors. They smoke their own bacon, create their sauces in house (the wing sauce is another award winner), and blend their own burger mixture which Smith says gives it a “steaky flavor.” He also credits the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce for their robust summer business and says the restaurant witnessed a notable

uptick in business after M.E.A.T was featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” For their next performance, Smith and Patti take their talents on the road to compete for the title of the “Best Burger” in the World Food Championships. The first round takes place on Friday with the championship round going down on Sunday where they will slather a sesame seed bun with a blueberry-chioplote jam, cover the burger with smoked gouda and top it off with applewood-smoked bacon and tempura-battered banana set atop a bun buttered with a spicy peanut sauce. The creation is called “Mr. Sticky Fingers.” Fans can follow their accomplishments via their Facebook page and Twitter account. Those less interested in the awards, can sample the fare at MM 88 oceanside, seven days a week. We recommend a Nutella MilkShake and Truffle fries with any burger.

EVIE ENGELMEYER • Captain, U.S. Army Ordinance Officer • Served Honorably: 2007 – 2011 • Stationed: Fort Carson, Colorado • Currently: Human Resources Director, Village of Islamorada GABRIEL SANCHEZ
gabriel@keysweekly.com
T
he daughter of an airman of 27 years, Evie Engelmeyer decided to join the military on Sept. 11, 2001 while she and her family lived on Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. She would go on to graduate from the Florida Institute of Technology’s Army ROTC program with a degree in forensic psychology and a minor in military science.
Captain Evie Engelmeyer, left, alongside her sister Captain Kelly Sams, United States Air Force.
While attending ROTC, the Army began preparing Engelmeyer for the transition into active duty life. Finishing in the top 10 percent of her class, the new Army ordinance officer chose her first duty station at Fort Carson, Colorado.
She was initially assigned to the Army’s 4th Infantry Division as a Casualty Assistance Officer. The 4th Infantry Division is composed of various brigades of armored and mechanized infantry. Engelmeyer’s duties also included planning all memorial and Purple Heart ceremonies for her soldiers. ‘It was a very humbling and eyeopening experience and a lot to take in, but you got to see a different side of the Army, the part that is compassionate and caring,” said Engelmeyer. Then she was assigned to the 43 Sustainment Brigade as the Executive Officer for the 60th Ordinance Company. At that point, the Company was split between two platoons in Fort Hood and two in Fort Carson. The four platoons later consolidated in Colorado, later deploying in January of 2009 to Iraq. While the Company deployed, Engelmeyer was selected to stay back and act as the Commanding Officer of the home detachment. “At that point I transitioned from taking care of soldiers to taking care of solider families,” said Engelmeyer. “I tried to make sure every family had my individual attention when they needed it. We had a very small detachment, but we made a big impact on their family life. That’s important because that’s who is going to take care of
15
our soldiers when they hang up their boots.” Engelmeyer says her biggest accomplishment is getting the 60th Ordinance Company deployment ready, while still keeping a personal touch. “The unit was one of the first with boots on the ground in the war and were still out there attacking. When I got there, some of the the people I met were on their fifth or sixth rotation with the Brigade. They would come home, be home less than a year, and then restart their training. It was crazy the amount of effort they put into it,” she said. The 69th Ordinance Company operated out of Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq. When the day came to hang up her boots, Captain Engelmeyer witnessed another historic day in military foreign policy. On May 2, 2011, her final day of service, Navy seals killed Osama Bin Laden while conducting Operation Neptune Spear in Pakistan. “The day I made my decision to join and the day I left are very fitting,” reflected Engelmeyer.

WAR MOVIES Some picks for Veterans Day HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
“Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.” — Gen. George Patton, “Patton” (1970) Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, president of Florida Keys Community College, poses with Jerry Wilkinson, right, a local Air Force veteran honored this past Saturday.
College salutes veterans Special honor goes to Jerry Wilkinson
“A
t our Community Day festivities on Saturday, we celebrated the many members of our vibrant community with whom Florida Keys Community College is privileged to serve and partner. One sector within our community deserves particular recognition, honor, and gratitude: military service members,” said Gueverra. “I express my sincerest thanks to them and their families for their dedication and commitment, and for their continued service to protect our freedom.” Gueverra singled out one particular local individual: Jerry Wilkinson, an entrepreneur, historian, philanthropist, artist, adventurer, and 22-year Air Force veteran. Long before Jerry Wilkinson permanently joined the Keys community in the 1980s, he first ventured to Key West aboard a motorcycle in 1947. While in Key West, the young Wilkinson quickly noticed a challenge in seeking lady friends as the swarms of sailors on the island had him sorely outnumbered. So he decided that if he couldn’t beat them, he should join them. He applied to the Navy, but did not pass the vision test. Fortunately, though, the Army Air Corp was right across the hall, and from there he embarked on his military career. Eager and hard-working, Wilkinson soon climbed to the positions of drill instructor and eventually special electronics instructor. In those roles, he discovered his passion for teaching. He enjoyed preparing scores of young soldiers—who were barely yet adults at the time — to be physically and mentally prepared for whatever their missions may bring. In 1955, during the Korean War, Wilkinson was deployed to Guam. For two years, he was part of an Aircraft
Control and Warning Squadron that repaired disabled aircraft and returned them back to action. In 1958, post-Korean War and amid The Cold War, Wilkinson took part in a mission with our allies to build a “radar fence” around Russia. He studied Spanish in Washington D.C. before being sent to Spain for four years to train Spanish Air Force radar operators. Wilkinson’s military career concluded with the Vietnam War during which he served two years as an Electronics Superintendent at a radar station in Alaska. He retired in 1970 as a Command Sergeant Major after 22 years of service. That was just the beginning of Wilkinson’s adventures. He spent the next 10 years with his wife Mary Lou, rotating between Key Largo — teaching windsurfing; Colorado — guiding river raft tours; and California — taking college classes. With the GI Bill and a love for education, he ultimately earned seven associate degrees. The Wilkinsons eventually settled in Tavernier in 1988. Very soon a new passion was ignited. He became enthralled with the rich history of the Florida Keys and began his quest to research, archive, and preserve records of the islands’ unique stories, culture, and ecology. Earlier this year, Wilkinson donated $100,000 to the FKCC Foundation to establish a scholarship that will provide scholarships for worthy FKCC students in perpetuity. Wilkinson is a true champion for education and a treasure to our community and our nation. “May such service, achievements, and generosity serve as an inspiration for all,” said Gueverra. — Contributed

VETERANS DAY
UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 11, 2016 WILLIAM “SAM” CREEL Radarman, U.S. Navy Creel was born in a military family. He was on the ground in Vietnam from 1961 to 1965. “We all have an idea of what war is like and when you get there, it’s nothing like you can imagine. It changes you. It’s a shock and as much of a shock it is going over there, it’s even more of a shock coming home. You’re not the same guy that left, and you never are.” He’s made a lot of good friends along the way, and some he is still in contact with. Personally, he thought it was an eye-opening experience, being exposed to so many Americans from different walks of life. Yet, they all had to work together to get things done. “What it did for my generation, as a society, was a very good thing.”
DANIEL BROWN Petty Officer Third Class, U.S. Navy
JOHN KELSEY Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force
Brown was deployed to South America twice on drug trafficking missions. He’s been to Panama, Columbia, Costa Rica and Mexico. Brown, aboard the U.S.S. Rentz in 2013, aided in an $80 million cocaine confiscation. The biggest lesson he learned from his service was how to play a role in a mission, “team-work.” He added, “We had to make it back home safe.” Brown also regarded the “chainof-command” as a lesson well-learned. In crossing the equator, he gained his seaworthiness as a “shellback,” which Brown said was fun. “The food wasn’t that bad and the toilet paper is like sandpaper,” Brown said. It is the camaraderie between his shipmates that he misses most and said he does keep in touch with a few of them.
Kelsey is a career military man, spending more than 20 years in the Air Force. He’s had a lot of jobs; machinist, combat generators, superintendent of training of Air Force One. He even wrote for Stars and Stripes briefly. “It’s funny, it still comes down to honoring my country,” said Kelsey. He’s been everywhere including Vietnam during the war. “It was a tough time,” said Kelsey. “Whether good or bad decisions were made during the war, I didn’t question it. I did what I was supposed to do. Things I did were criticized later on, but I still listened to the commander in charge.” Kelsey furthered, “No one benefits from war, but it’s a fact of life, it’s inevitable.”

ONE STEP AT A TIME Long Walk Home charity shifting focus GABRIEL SANCHEZ
gabriel@keysweekly.com
W
hen Ron Zaleski first opened The Long Walk Home (TLWH) two years ago, he had realistic expectations. Following his “walk” across the country to bring awareness to veteran suicide and PTSD, Zaleski knew his message had to keep resounding with folks. A physically active veteran himself, Zaleski wanted to build a gym for his fellow veterans to exercise and relieve stress. It was with that goal in mind that Zaleski first rented the organization’s current building. Since its inception, the role and scope of The Long Walk Home has grown. The foundation initially took on legislators — attempting to pass mandatory counseling for all military personnel. Then it began to serve homeless veterans seeking a place to eat, maintain their hygiene, and restore dignity. The cost of continuing a full spectrum of services, on top of the rent, has burdened the nonprofit’s budget. Almost all the money raised has been spent on keeping the doors open to its current facility, which alone costs the organization $36,000 annually. Zaleski said it’s time to refocus on its mission. “I’m just shifting, I have the same goal, and am moving in the same direction,” said Zaleski. Currently searching for less expensive rental space, Zaleski said TLWH will continue to offer both workshops and workouts, but can no longer offer homeless services. (Veterans have been referred to Monroe County Homeless Services Continuum-of-Care Inc.) He said he’s researching grants to bring aboard full-time paid employees. This allows Zaleski, who essentially has managed every aspect of The Long Walk Home, to reform the foundation’s capabilities to best suit Monroe County veterans. William Crossan, a homeless veteran, said TLWH has encouraged him to keep going. “The culture here is a lot of caring.

TLWH Schedule • Tuesdays: Spiritual group workshop @ 6 p.m. • Wednesdays: Weekly meditation @ 7 p.m. • Thursdays: Free acupuncture @ 10 a.m. • Thursdays: Weekly workshop @ 6 p.m. (Veterans only need a DD214 OR Veterans ID for the first visit.)
When I first arrived, Ron went over what he does, what he offers, and what he expects,” said Crossan. “After coming here I feel like there is still humanity left, and it makes me feel really good. I wouldn’t have the opportunities I do have, if it weren’t for Ron … more people need to get involved.” The current plan is to publish a book about Ron’s “walk” to raise money and the organization’s credibility. Workshops and monthly potlucks will continue as scheduled for the remainder of the year, as the organization searches for new headquarters. To donate to the organization or sign up for workshops The Long Walk Home facilitates, call 305504-3795 or email info@ thelongwalkhome.org

‘Did you kill anyone?’
MARCH HARE MARINE SERVICES CERTIFIED MARINE SURVEYS
Because there is such a thing as a dumb question
MASTER MARINE SURVEYOR SERVING ALL THE KEYS
office: cell: e-mail:
Weekly staffer Gabriel Sanchez, center, served in the Marines.
T
he difficult transition of both deploying and then returning from a theater of war is a long and humbling experience. Here’s what DOESN’T help: When someone asks, “Did you kill anyone?” The first time someone asked me that, I didn’t know what to say. This person was a full-grown adult, who I assumed would know better. But then it continued to happen. I would say I’ve been asked that question at least two dozen times. Even more puzzling, is the perGABRIEL ception that veterans WANT to answer that question. SANCHEZ Here’s the long answer, it’s complicated. Let’s use the anecdote of “Petty Officer F:” … is a Marathon While working alongside a Marine Corps supply and native, Navy veterlogistics unit, Petty Officer F befriended a young female an, and struggling musician. He’s Marine who coordinated supplies for adjacent comliving proof that mands on base. The two would often work out together great things … are and practice techniques taught in MCMAP (the Marine short and have good hair (includ- Corps Martial Arts Program.) One day, while doing some mat-work together, the young Marine took a blow to her ing facial). Sixty percent of the head. The next day, her body was found slumped inside time, he makes of a portable bathroom stall. It was determined that she 90 percent of the had died from a brain aneurism the night before. deadlines. The months that followed saw the Marine Corps, her family, and even his own leadership point the finger at Petty Officer F. Following a lengthy investigation, and months of blame seeking, the incident was deemed a freak accident. But this wasn’t the end of the ordeal for Petty Officer F. For years I saw my friend struggle with guilt, nightmares, PTSD, self-hate and depression. So, imagine the difficulty Petty Officer F faces every single time someone asks him, “Did you kill someone?” It’s complicated. Regardless of how war and its after-effects are portrayed in popular culture, I assure you it is very different. And while there are so many questions we can ask our veterans to better understand their experiences, asking someone if they took someone’s life, regardless of the situation, has no place. There is nothing to gain from this knowledge, there is no purpose in asking about the morbid details of someone’s death. I challenge you to thank a service member this Veterans Day, and when the time comes to ask something, ask them “How many people did you help?” That’s an order.
