Zieg was named Mayor and Michelle Coldiron was named Vice Mayor — it wasn’t without some discussion. Former mayor Mark Senmartin went so far as to suggest changes to the city charter. “In the next couple of meetings we have a chance to discuss changing the charter, which would be decided by all the voters,” Senmartin said. “It would take all the backroom politicking away from the selection of mayor.” Marathon City Council does not have a “strong mayor” hierarchy, however the mayor does have a leadership role in hurricane situations and as a point of contact with other agencies. Zieg was nominated by Coldiron for Mayor and unanimously approved. Then Senmartin nominated Councilman John Bartus for Vice Mayor. In the next breath, newly elected Councilman Steve Cook nominated Michelle Coldiron. First, the council voted 2-3 for Bartus as Vice Mayor (Senmartin and Bartus with the “ayes”). Then the

council voted unanimously to elect Coldiron. Zieg bested former Councilman Bill Kelly by four votes (2,212) in the Nov. 8 election that saw Bartus garner most of the votes (2,563) followed by newcomer Cook (2,502). After a flurry of special proclamations — regarding Veterans Day, and Manatee and Adoption Awareness months — Zieg got right down to business with one of his pet projects: amending the ordinance that governs permit expiration. He praised city attorney David Migut and building official John Woodson. “When we reviewed the building codes, we found some inconsistencies with Florida Building Code and several loopholes,” Zieg said. Essentially, the timelines will be shortened. But another provision calls for a bond, or deposit, the third time a permit is extended. The bond would be equal to 10 percent of the last property appraiser’s valuation. That caused widespread concern among the council — with Senmartin, Cook, Bartus and Coldiron protesting the extra burden on the developer who most likely is already experiencing hardship. (The 10 percent bond would be low on a vacant lot, but higher on a demolition project, for example.) Council asked staff to make the bond aspect negotiable at the council level on a case-by-case basis. The ordinance will have another hearing at the next meeting. In other news, city staff waived transfer fees on two market rate building permits for the Domestic Abuse Shelter who seeks to sell them privately. The stipulation was that the $40,000 in transfer fees be donated to the shelter which is currently undergoing financial hardship. “I would have thought that there would have been more of a middle ground between all and none [of the transfer fees normally paid into city coffers],” Senmartin said, who also expressed surprise that the decision was made at the staff level and came before the council as an accomplished deed. • • • • • Correction: A sailor’s name was misspelled in the Cruisers Guide magazine inserted into this issue. A Celebration of Grand Expansions!

Too many to count

B

efore I moved to the Keys I’d never thought about where all the wastewater goes when you flush the toilet or take a shower. Then there was all the brouhaha about deep wells versus shallow wells for the Cudjoe Wastewater Treatment Plant, and I got educated. The output from the Plant goes into shallow wells, which only go down 80-120 feet. Unfortunately, we learned from FIU’s Dr. Briceno, given the porous nature of the Keys, that treated wastewater migrates from those shallow wells to our nearshore waters. Hence, the final decision to dig a deep well, which goes down 3,300 feet. Testing by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s (FKAA) consultant, Flowers Chemical Laboratory, Inc., reports the number of fecal coliform and enterococci (gut bacteria) in the groundwater under the treatment plant and former landfill is “too many colonies to count.” The Lab Reports are posted on the FKAA website monthly. “Too many colonies to count” first appeared on the Flowers Reports in November 2015 for one of five shallow groundwater-monitoring wells. Since that time, “too many colonies to count” have been reported at two of the five monitoring wells at each quarterly sampling of groundwater. I spoke with Julie Cheon, the public information manager for the Aqueduct Authority and learned that “There is no sanitary control over the monitoring wells.” “Its part of nature” she explained; the results of birds and deer who frequent the area. “We were seeing hits of ecoli before there was any discharge from the Plant.” Perhaps the former landfill is contributing to the increase in fecal coliform and enterococci. The problem is we don’t know the extent of the fecal coliform and enterococci in the ground water when the Flowers Lab reports too many colonies to count. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) publishes a document to guide Discharge Monitoring Reporting (DMR). This FDEP document on p.13 clearly states: “Laboratories should be encouraged to conduct the necessary dilution series in order to obtain a quantifiable result for reporting fecal coliform values ... instead of reporting “TNTC” ... Failing to accurately measure the fecal coliform and enterococci at the Cudjoe Wastewater Treatment Plant monitoring wells effectively nullifies the Lab’s results. Why is the incompetence being tolerated? Why have DEP and the FKAA accepted the “too many to count” reports. Diane Johnson Sugarloaf Key

eys Strength and Conditioning would like to congratulate some of our members on their recent accomplishments. Monroe County Sheriff Capt. Gene Thompson and Detective Sgt. Chuck Kellenberger and friend Paula Wolfe, recently completed their third Spartan — a perfect trifecta. In order to qualify, they must complete three obstacle races in a calendar year. The first was a “sprint” — 5 miles and 20 obstacles — in North Carolina. The second was a “super” — 8 mile and 24 obstacles — also in North Carolina. And the third was a “beast” — 14 miles and 35 obstacles — in South Carolina. Gene told us he loves the trail running and river wading and crawling under barbed wire and “literally climbing a mountain on all fours.” Gene even built his own “hoist” obstacle at home so he could practice. At Keys Strength and Conditioning we are grateful to train not only physically fit athletes, but also mentally tough contestants. We hope to inspire more athletes to take on challenges like these and put together a bigger team to represent the Florida Keys and Keys Strength and Conditioning. L

iving in the Florida Keys is a challenge for every generation— be it Conch or transplant — all of us face money, housing, and career challenges. The Greatest Generation and Generation X have already faced the music … but have our Millennials? It seems resident Keys Millennials are proving more motivated and innovative than the stereotype.

A common complaint about Millennials (or “Generation Me”) is they are “lazy and entitled.” Born from 1980 on, Millennials are the first generation to grow up with the internet and electronics galore. Their tech savvy is unparalleled (until the next generation of social networking tweeters emerge from the Apple womb). So because of their centurial timing, Millennials have been the recipient of a worldwide campaign to woo them. No other generation has been targeted by America’s

market forces so comprehensively, no other generation has been so thoroughly “parented.” Numbering roughly 75 million — eventually they, too, will simply grow up. Our survey of Keys Millenials found a couple of common threads —hard work, entrepreneurship and the universal grievance about the lack of shopping opportunities. Yes, we’re talking about Target, Ikea and Whole Foods.

THANK YOU! It’s an honor to be able to serve this amazing community for two more years. Thank you for your confidence in my ability to stand up for the needs and interests of our unique district and for your continued support.

MILLENIALS

MARATHON WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 18, 2016

How different are island millenials? MARGOT WARSHAW, 23 Guest services and photo technician at Aquarium Encounters in Marathon Margot Warshaw moved to Marathon because she wanted to live somewhere different from Queens, New York and experience different cultures before she settles down. Not knowing what she wants to do as a career, she told her parents she retired early when she moved to the Keys. “I also totally wanted to relax on a tropical island for a little bit,” she said. Paying $750 a month plus utilities in rent aside, “the disadvantage to living down here is it's sort of a bubble, and, in a way, remote living,” she said. “You are disconnected from the mainland and therefore everything is a little different, but not necessarily in a bad way.” She’s not sure she’ll be in the Keys 10 years from now. “I do know I want to travel a lot more, but maybe I'll end up back here someday,” she said. As for a job, she’s continually learning new things and hopes to further her art career in glasswork. She uses Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook on her iPhone and gets her news from NPR. She spends about $60 a week on entertainment.

LIZ KUCK, 27 Co-owner of Keys Strength and Conditioning in Marathon Liz Kuck moved to the Keys a few years ago with her fiancée, now husband, Chris Kuck who is a Marathon native. They immediately started training Marathon residents and have since opened up a fitness studio for individual training, a gym that offers fitness classes, and a rowing studio. Kuck said she doesn’t consider herself a Millenial. “For some reason, I thought they were younger,” she said, adding there is a negative connotation to that generation in the media. (Not the Weekly!) After reflecting for a moment, she said her definition of a Millenial “is the young entrepreneurs, the young working class. The people who are developing and using the technology. When I think of a Millenial, it’s synonymous with technology. To that end, she uses the MindBody app the most — that’s how her clients book classes and she’s constantly monitoring the signups. Her preferred social media platform is Instagram, and she uses GroupMe to communicate with family. She gets the news via The Skimm. Her entertainment expenses run about $125 a week, double that for the two of them. The only disadvantage of living in the Keys, she said, is the lack of shopping. “I miss the big city, but it can be a little overwhelming, too.” As to the future, Liz said she has found her home. In 10 years, she expects to have the same profession and be a mom. “I want kids at some point,” she said.

BRIEFLY Rummage sale supports garden club A rummage sale will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marathon Garden Club, 5270 Overseas Highway. Call 305-7434971 for more information, or visit marathongardenclub.org.

KCB boat parade set for Dec. 11 The Key Colony Beach Christmas Boat Parade will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. The best viewing is from Key Colony Beach City Hall dock, or along the causeway. Registration is free and open to all boaters. To register, call or text Ted Fischer at 302-8419812. COMMERCE CORNER FLORIDA KEYS SAILING SAILING SCHOOL/CHARTER COMPANY

The sound of sailing, no engine noise, and sitting back in a bean bag chair sipping wine or just enjoying the moment is an intimate moment. Florida Keys Sailing is an American Sailing Association school located in the Keys Fisheries Marina - home of the Lobster Reuben and great staff - established in 1999. As a sailing school, they help people from all over the world to learn how to sail; some go home to sail on lakes, or rivers, and some currently have gone sailing around the world. For some, the bug starts from a sunset sail, or a full day sail to the reef with a stop on the way back to have dinner, while others come for a full week charters to Key West, Dry Tortugas, and soon Cuba. Florida Keys Sailing offers locals with an opportunity to rent boats in a club fashion versus having to bore all of the costs of slippage and upkeep of their own. “In all, you can’t put a price on adventure and the sunsets of the Keys,” said owner GDub, who acquired the company in 2014. “It’s an adventure!” Florida Keys Sailing only serves private bookings. Thousands have enjoyed their sunset sails and sailing classes offered by GDub and his six instructors. SHE’S HOME!

The Keys are very familiar with folks finishing grand cycling adventures in the Keys, no matter where they originate. But Marathon Realtor Kathryn Rummery undertook her own journey — the Trans America Bike Tour. She started in San Diego, California on Oct. 1 and finished this week in St. Augustine, Florida. Here is the final installment on her trip. • WEEK: #8 • MILES: 2,590 • TOTAL HOURS IN THE SADDLE: 227 • WHERE I AM: Back in the Florida Keys! • AVERAGE SPEED: 12.2 to 12.7 mph. Whether we were climbing hills or coasting down, strong head winds or tail winds, it always ended up the same at the end of the day. Fastest speed I traveled downhill was 39.2 mph, but my crazy riding buddy did 44 mph. That is fast on a bike!

• WEIGHT LOSS: You cannot eat enough calories when riding 5 to 8 hours a day. • DO IT AGAIN? Yes. Anyone want to join me? • REFLECTION ON THE TRIP: Can you believe it? I’m so sad it’s over; I loved every minute. After dipping our bikes in the Pacific on Oct. 1 we arrived at St. Augustine on Nov. 15 (45 days later) to dip our bikes in the Atlantic. I am the only rider that never had a flat tire. My friend, Tim, had eight. But … most bike accidents goes to me. I fell six times — four spills, and two bad crashes. Three other members also took small tumbles and one rider had to stop from a knee injury. Our SAG crew — support and cargo — provided us with food and water every 20 to 30 miles as we rode across the U.S. (Riders can also “SAG” if they are tired or injured and cannot ride.) That said, I “SAGGED” because of my fall, but only 130 miles.

From the Marathon community and the Keys Weekly, congratulations to Kathryn Rummery for her epic ride!

Gail’s Island Realty, based in Key Colony Beach has partnered with Portland, Oregon-headquartered Vacasa. Vacasa will assume management of the company’s vacation rental contracts. Gail’s Island Realty will continue to operate as a real estate firm under longtime owner and licensed broker Gail Borysiewicz. All employees working on the vacation rental business will be retained Gail Borysiewicz and transitioned as Vacasa operates the vacation rentals moving forward. The firm’s office building located off of Key Colony Beach Causeway/Sadowski Causeway will continue to operate as well. “I am thrilled to see the growth opportunities offered to all parties involved,” said Borysiewicz, who founded Gail’s Island Realty and Rentals more than eight years ago and has lived in the Keys since 1977. Key Colony Beach is a new market for Vacasa, which is the country’s second-largest vacation rental management company. Vacasa plans to continue expansion in the area, adding more homes and eventually hiring additional employees to manage them. In addition to powering headquartersbased marketing technologies, Vacasa hires and grows local teams to manage day-to-day operations.

Natalie Allen, customer service field representative, was selected as Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s Employee of the Quarter by a committee of her peers. “Without hesitation Natalie will jump in and assist others both inside and outside of Natalie Allen her department,” commented Yusi Bonachea, customer service area manager. “A true team player with a great attitude, Natalie is appreciated by her coworkers and supervisors and epitomizes the FKAA spirit.” Richards named top hospital employee Fishermen’s Community Hospital has announced the recipients of its Exemplary Employee Awards Program for the Third Quarter. BRIEFLY Scammers target FKEC Consumers FKEC continues to receive reports of a telephone scam targeting both residential and commercial FKEC (Florida Keys Electric Cooperative consumers). In most cases the scammer instructs the potential target to purchase a pre-paid Green Dot or Reloadit cash card and to call back with the card numbers or power will be disconnected. The

most recent trend includes scammers claiming a technician is on the way to the target’s location and will disconnect power unless payment is provided immediately. If you receive a suspicious call threatening to disconnect your power, hang up and dial 305-852-2431 immediately to ensure that you are speaking to a bona fide FKEC employee.

GABRIEL SANCHEZ & SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly & FELIX HILARY/Contributed 1. The judges said they had a very tough time selecting winners from so many sumptuous offerings. They are, seated from left, Mike Puto, organizer Mallory Morton (with the tray), Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent, Marathon Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron, State Rep. Holly Raschein, Dante Senmartin, Marathon Councilman Mark Senmartin and Suzy Neugent . 2. The Lobster Crawl Bar & Grill is a popular stand among famished attendees. 3. Chef Stanton directs the MHS culinary students to a win with the sliders. (But the Nutella s’mores parfait … oh my!) 4. Thomas and Susan dispense Florida Keys Brewing Co. beer from the vintage VW bus. 5. Hawks Cay’s black-eyed peas with a bit of perfectly prepared fish are incredibly tasty.

Burdine’s Waterfront

B

urdine’s is known for their amazing cheeseburgers and mountainous French fries, but staffer Megan Nix says their rotating seasonal craft beer selection is also a winner. One of her favorites and the most popular beer on the menu is a mainstay: the Sculpin Ballast Point, a seven-percent IPA from San Diego. A close second is the Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale, a seasonal offering. Nix moved to the Keys two years ago with a boy and boat from California. She’s been at Burdine’s just as long and loves the beautiful views from the raised deck of the tiki. “I get to meet people from all over the world, and you can’t beat the gorgeous sunsets,” she said, quickly adding, “or the French fries.” She said the craft beers (and fresh squeezed lemonade) go best with the green chili cheeseburger. “We roast the chilies in house,” she said. “So, it’s a lively addition to an already delicious burger.” When she isn’t running around at the busy restaurant, she’s fishing and enjoying paradise with her two daughters, or hanging out at the beach.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

MARATHON WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 18, 2016

9. What is your nerdiest passion? Cleaning up the boat in the afternoon. It has to be perfect when I go back out. 10. If you could take one thing to a deserted island? I would bring Lynn. And she’d be on my ass to make sure everything gets done.

Ultimate Adventurist KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

A

kristen@keysweekly.com

champion snow skier and wave surfer, Duck Key resident Lee Lucas, now in his 70s, found his way to the Keys when recovering from a broken back and in need of warm weather. Featured in ads (skiing powder) and movies (climbing cliff sides barehanded with skis bungeed to his back), Lucas is the ultimate adventurist who now spends his time fishing. His only worries these days, he said, is climbing in and out of the boat and standing up on his paddleboard. A self-proclaimed travel junkie, Lucas paid his way through life as a surfboard builder from Texas (the No. 2 shop in the country outside of California). Lucas then went on to be a Colorado local TV station owner and Breckenridge photo shop owner, then a Hawaiian surfer. In the Florida Keys, he is the charter captain of the “First Love.” He and his wife, Lynn, were high school sweethearts who reconnected at their 30-year reunion. Between the two they have a son, two daughters, three granddaughters, a grandson, one great granddaughter, and one more granddaughter on the way and enough room on Duck Key to have them all visit during the holidays and summers.

11. How many bones have you broken? Every one of them. 12. What was your first thought this morning? One day left, have to pack for vacation, oh crap, I have to call Kristen and finish this interview. 13. Favorite guilty pleasure? Vanilla Blue Bell Ice Cream. It’s the closest to my mom’s homemade ice cream, without having to turn a crank.

1. Best and worst work gig? Photographer for the Beach Boys. Worst? Washing dishes and toilets after my passport was stolen in Istanbul. 2. Worst nickname? WWF or Gator — everyone said I looked like a wrestler with the long hair. Lynn nicknamed me “Gator” because I live in Florida. I’ve been called a lot worse, but I won’t mention those. 3. Name one famous person you would want to share dinner with? John Wayne, he’s a man’s man. “Hurry up, we’re burning daylight.” Think about the stories that man would have. 4. If you could put one famous person in elected position in the Keys? Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — no b.s., funny as hell, and he’d get it done. 5. Who is your celebrity crush and why? Oh gosh, years ago, Barbara Eden from “I Dream of Jeannie.” I used to be her private ski guide. And, of course, my wife Lynn Lucas; she’s famous here.

6. Who is your favorite surfer? So many waterman — but my all time favorite has to be Bethany Hamilton, the little lady who lost her arm to the tiger shark. To see her surf now and what she is doing, she is amazing. 7. Funniest Keys story? Just go hang out at a boat ramp, especially at the end of the day. It’s hilarious. I won $5,000 on “America’s Funniest Home Video” years ago. 8. First fish? When I was five years old, fishing on the Gulf Coast, I caught a big old cobia and was hooked ever since.

His only worries these days is climbing in and out of the boat and standing up on his paddleboard.

14. Pet peeve about your job? Hungover people who want to go fishing. Free chum. 15. If you could change the world, what would you do? If I was in a beauty pageant, I’d like to see the world be a nicer place for my kids and grandkids. It’s becoming a scary world out there and I don’t like it. 16. Best vacation spot and why? Hanalei Bay. It’s beautiful. We spend about a month there every year. 17. The boat is sinking, what do you grab? The EPIRB life jacket. Luckily, I have never had that problem. 18. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to stay above ground and water, and enjoy life. Surfer, skier, traveler, fisherman — I am happy where I am. Finish these sentences: 19. My autobiography would be titled…”You ain’t never had too much fun.” 20. At the end of a rainbow there is … never any gold, but always a great photo op.

The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am a member of many clubs like National Honor Society, Academic Challenge, Drama Club and Mock Trial. I am also a member of the swim and tennis teams. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? My biggest inspiration I met at Stanley Switlik Elementary, Beth Pinkus. She broadened my thinking and experience. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP Calculus will help me in college. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Snapchat and the face swap. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenge in the Keys is the lack of a hardworking work force. What are your plans after high school? To attend college and study mechanical or industrial engineering. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I may return, but not right away. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … that given limited opportunities, you must make your own.

Go Girls! MHS team swells to contender status SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

F

rom four girls in 2015, the Marathon High School girls’ weight lifting team has grown to 15 competitors in 2016. “I think we have to credit Rachel Torres-Brown, who graduated last year,” said coach Jessie Schubert, adding that he learned about much about official competition from this graduate who helped created the club last year. Rachel finished second in the state finals last year in her weight class. “I think a lot of the girls were hesitant about joining the first year, but Rachel did so well they said, ‘You know what? I’ll do this.”’ The team has one returning competitor — Oriana Mendez, a sophomore. Schubert said she had a personal best at the away meet on Wednesday at Gulliver with a 125-pound bench and a 130-pound clean and jerk. Coach Schubert said the girls’ gains are exponential. “Everybody is besting their first records by about 20 pounds,” he said. The informal MHS meet on Nov. 10 was against a four-person team from Gulliver. The Gulliver team had four first-place finishes in the various weight classes, while MHS had two first place finishes and numerous placers in every class. Schubert said it’s a numbers game. “Whoever has the most competitors is the most likely to win a meet,” he said.

Baelee Pettry, a junior, also plays volleyball and softball.

Hannah Child is also a volleyball and a soccer player at MHS.

At Wednesday’s match up at Gulliver, the dozen or so from Marathon High School team faced five competitors from Gulliver, nine from Pine Crest Academy, and nine from Arch Bishop McCarthy. Schubert said he was amazed by the comraderie among the teams. “All the girls are very cool. They cheer and encourage one another,” he said. Schubert is a language teacher at Marathon High school.

The team consists of, clockwise from bottom left, Audrey Matthis, Delania Ross, Baelee Pettry, Nakiah Leppke, Hannah Child, Rachel Philcox, Oriana Mendez, Aquilla Lettman, Coach Schubert, Sydney Snow and Milly Cruz. Not pictured: Takara McKnight, Amanda Ban, Natalie Mendoza and Gwen Rohe.
