Everyone has found themselves clicking through daytime television at least once in their life. That usually means reruns of “General Hospital” and “Days of Our lives” — gross. The only saving grace of daytime television is the slew of game shows. And everyone has at least one game show they’ve day dreamed of being a contestant on, whether it’s “Wheel of Fortune” or “Naked and Afraid.” So we asked …

If you could compete on any game show, which would it be?

T

he Monroe County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved continuing with the development of its canal restoration program during a special meeting Monday at the Marathon Government Center. The 5-0 decision was made after the Commission was presented with the early results of seven restoration demonstration projects that showed improved water quality and provided information gathered on which techniques work better. It’s a massive undertaking to address the problem: 229 manmade canals in unincorporated Monroe County are impaired and do not meet state water quality standards. The approximate cost for restoring these canals is daunting at $671 million. On Monday, the BOCC approved a

resolution to spend $1.5 million in state funding, which comes from the Florida Keys Stewardship Act that was passed early in the year, on canal restoration. It also approved using some RESTORE Act funds, which come from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlements, on canal restoration. The BOCC next approved using up to $2 million of Stewardship and RESTORE funds during FY 2017 on the restoration of six additional canals. The $1.5 million in Stewardship funds would be used for a backfilling project on a canal in Key Largo (either Canal 75 or 76) that has been identified as one of the most impaired by the Monroe County Canal Management Master Plan. Four canals in Key Largo (No. 48, 59, 79 and 80) are slated for augmented

aeration, a new technique that has not yet been used in the Florida Keys. But before these projects can go forward, the BOCC is requiring that there is community funding participation by the homeowners who live along those canals. The fifth canal, No. 83, is a combination of organic removal, backfilling and an air curtain. Funding for this already is in place. The County began its canal restoration program in 2012 and so far has spent $7 million on demonstration projects on seven of the worst canals in Monroe County. The original pilot restoration projects tested four types of technologies (backfilling, organic removal, air curtains, and culverts) or combinations of the technologies on canals in Key Largo, Big Pine Key and Geiger Key. While some of the techniques have worked better than others to date, all have shown improvement in water quality. It is still too early to tell the long-term success of each of the projects. Six of these seven canals require ongoing operation and maintenance to keep their water quality improvements. The BOCC also approved a resolution that directs County staff to continue with the development of a program to collect special assessments and the creation of municipal service benefit units (MSBUs) to collect funds to pay for the ongoing operation and maintenance costs for the six original canals at a combined cost of about $87,000 per year. The special assessments would be levied only on the homeowners whose properties are along these canals. There will be public hearings throughout the process before any special assessments are put in place. The property owners on these restored canals have benefitted from improved water quality, gains in overall appearance of their property, increase in property values and improved use of the canals for fishing, swimming and other recreational uses. Monitoring for the water quality improvement of the canal restoration projects is being conducted in the canals and 50 meters from the canal’s mouth. — Contributed

INTO THE BLUE

Turtle caught, treated, released

T

his past Friday, Horizon Divers of Key Largo released “Bailey” into the waters near the Duane. “Gratitude all around for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of this magnificent animal,” said Bette Zirkelbach, manager of The Turtle Hospital. “Compassion is contagious!” The story began in October when divers noticed the hawksbill sea turtle wasn’t using one flipper — she had a large fishing hook embedded in her right shoulder. Dive shop owner Dan Dawson and Capt. Troy Wheatley of Horizon Divers worked together with their crew to bring Bailey to the surface. A rehabilitation specialist at the Turtle Hospital was waiting at the dock to transport Bailey in the turtle ambulance to the Middle Keys. Dr. Doug Mader of Marathon Veterinary Hospital removed the hook and Bailey was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics. Bailey healed well and regained full use of her flipper. Once released from the boat, Bailey swam gracefully into the blue. — Weekly Staff report

ilots N Paws is an allvolunteer effort between animal rescues, pilots, and individuals to coordinate the transfers of all types of animals. Online, their website serves as a meeting place for volunteers to plan transfers. With more than 5,000 volunteer pilots, the national charity has grown to fly more than 15,000 rescued animals each year. Some of the organization’s most eyebrow-raising transfers have consisted of a baby dolphin, bear cubs, bats, pygmy donkeys, and a young tiger. Many of the transfers happen across state lines, though for Marathon-based pilot, Jeff Bennett, those trips have become commonplace. The retired Navy ‘nuke,’ has spent the last eight years flying around his Cirrus SR22 loaded with all sorts of critters going to their “forever homes.” “It’s just the love of flying and my love of dogs, and putting it together,” said Bennett of his initial motivation. “You can only burn so many holes in the sky before you get bored, so it works out.” After reading a magazine that featured Pilots N Paws, Bennett decided to volunteer. He now spends roughly 200 hours a year in the air, transferring animals to and from various rescues primarily located in the southeastern part of the country, though he’s traveled as far north as Tennessee. “If you don’t mobilize and move them the day they have to go, many places begin to euthanize them,” said Bennett. Though he’s currently recovering from shoulder surgery, it hasn’t stopped him from continuing his good deeds. Bennett drives animals to and from rescues in his personal vehicle, in what he playfully refers to as — “Pilots N Paws: Wingless Division.” By land, he’s able to transfer 80 to 100 animals at one time with his longest “wingless” transfer being a 1,600-mile cross country trek. “It’s a volunteer service, so the only benefit you get is that the jet fuel is tax deductible, though I never did it for the numbers,” explained Bennett. “I try and take photos and document each transfer.” To this day, he has coordinated and conducted the transfer of more than 5,000 animals. Bennett’s rescue repertoire is quite extensive and includes kinkajous,

blue foot boobies, pelicans, hawks, falcons, snakes, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pythons, sea turtles, tortoises, cats, and dogs. The largest animal he’s transferred was a 90-pound Great Pyrenees. “I do a lot of the coordinating for the bigger fly-aways, too — which are usually 20 to 25 plane loads. In those cases, we get a manifest together, make weight and crate arrangements, and assign each load,” he said. Bennett’s SR22 averages 30 animals onboard, while a fleet of pilots can move 250 to 300 animals at once. Interstate transfers take a little more effort, as the logistics behind a multi-state rescue requires multiple pilots and volunteers. Animals have been the main cargo, but that hasn’t stopped humans from joining Bennett in his journeys throughout the years. Jessica Lilli, marine mammal trainer for Dolphins Plus Bayside in Key Largo, accompanied Bennett last year on a transfer after winning a bid at Marrvelous Pet Rescue’s Spayghetti and No Balls gala.

“We flew from Marathon to Marianna, Florida, and picked up 28 puppies and one kitten,” said Lilli of her adventure. “It was a beautiful ride over the Everglades that I’ll never forget and wonderful to help those animals. Throughout the flight they were right next to us, so we made sure they were comfortable. One even slept in my lap on the way back.” Bennett implores perspective owners to adopt, instead of buy, their pets. When possible, he works to match owners with the desired breed, size, temperament, energy level, and age of whatever kind of dog they would like. Pets that are transferred through Pilots N Paws have usually been examined by veterinarians at their respective rescues and may have received necessary shots, though, it is not the responsibility of, or a service, that Pilot N Paws provides. Visit www.pilotsnpaws.org/ to learn more about their community of volunteer pilots and read their stories.

Community Foundation accepting nominations The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) is accepting nominations for the 17th Annual Unsung Heroes celebration, recognizing the tremendous efforts of volunteers who donate their time and service to our community’s nonprofits. All Monroe County 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofits are invited to nominate their Volunteer of the Year to be honored at a celebration in January of 2017. The deadline for this year’s nominations is Dec. 16. Online nomination forms are available at cffk.org. Scammers target FKEC Consumers FKEC continues to receive reports of a telephone scam targeting both residential and commercial FKEC (Florida Keys Electric Cooperative consumers). In most cases the scammer instructs the potential target to purchase a pre-paid Green Dot or Reloadit cash card and to call back with the card numbers or power will be disconnected. The most recent trend includes scammers claiming a technician is on the way to the target's location and will disconnect power unless payment is provided immediately.

CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 18, 2016 The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Cane Pride.”

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think all of my classes are important because I learn a lot. But I think Spanish helps me because I can speak another language. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? My favorite is Snapchat because you get to use a lot of the face filters. What are your plans after high school? I want to get a job so that I can help my mother. I would also like to attend community college. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I would like to leave the Keys and move back to New York because I like the big city. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to be more independent and enjoy the ocean and the beautiful sunsets.

eon Dermer is a global traveler with a singular mission. For 18 years, he’s owned and operated Captain’s Imports in Key Largo and his biggest passion is bringing high-quality, one-of-a-kind bronze sculptures to the Florida Keys. “My store is completely unique. There is no other place in the world like it,” Dermer said. The bronze art sculptures in the outdoor “garden” are elegant and elaborately detailed. Picture this: A bronze casted seaplane captured in midair by a kraken octopus with water gently spouting out of the plane propeller. To date, it is the largest piece Dermer has commissioned an artist to make. It stands 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall. Another favorite: mermaid sculptures with custom heads. “Husbands give me old high-school photos of their wives,” Dermer said. “And then the it’s cast into a three-dimensional piece. It works.” The Captain’s Imports sculpture inventory is diverse, ranging from sailfish to children at play to wildlife. Some of the sculptures are finished with paint, others have a rich patina, and some feature the ultra-secret protective sealant dreamed up by Dermer. (He said its “extremely saltwater tolerant and will hold up forever.”) Every single one of the 450 bronze art pieces were delicately handcrafted by fine artists from all around the world and Dermer said he has a relationships with more than 100 artists from all over the world who create totally unique pieces exclusively for the shop in the Keys. Connie Krueger is the store manager and has been working with Dermer for 14 years. She said that the store has made lots of improvements through the years — it also sells pottery, hand crafted tiles, marble and blown glass — and she’s learned to recognize the “wow” reaction no matter what the language. “Leon’s able to adapt and grow and make things better, even throughout the recession,” said Krueger. Dermer, a former fishing captain, took a year off after retiring to travel. That’s when the bronze bug bit. He and his wife, Jennifer, originally opened a pottery shop but found bronze to be a more durable inventory in the Keys’ tough climate. Captain’s Imports is located at MM 99 bayside in Key Largo, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday.

A

drienne Z, singer, songwriter and guitarist will kick off the fourth season of the Key Largo Acoustic Open-Mic Coffeehouse at the Key Largo Civic Club, on Sunday, Nov. 20 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Adrienne has been a Keys resident since 2001. She is a versatile musician and producer performing solely and with her band Injade. Adrienne, after graduating Berklee College of Music, busked in Harvard Square performing her original music. From there, she easily transitioned to Key West performing regularly. Adrienne has produced six fulllength CDs of her original music. Her latest album, “Chameleons” was released this summer and its garnered great reviews.

It’s evident through Adrienne’s unique writing and “otherworldly” voice that she was born to perform music. She’s been honing her craft since she was 13-years-old. Her voice is deep and soulful, while her lyrics move listeners. Learn more about Adrienne on her website, adriennemusic.com. Songwriter and Coffeehouse host, Bryant Diersing, will share some of his music and stories. There will also be a segment of the show that encourages other performers to share a song or two. Admission donation is $2 and refreshments will be available. For more information contact Bryant through email at keylargoacousticcoffeehouse@hotmail.com. Please share your music with the community and enjoy some great performers. The Key Largo Civic Club is located at 209 Ocean Bay Drive.

BRIEFLY Shop and visit with Santa On Saturday, Dec. 10, the Upper Keys Community Resource Council and Flroida Kesy Outreach Coalition will be hosting an event to support homeless prevention services in the Upper Keys. The public is invited to stop by the Key Largo Lions Club from noon to 4 p.m. at MM 99. Organizers have planned face painting, cookie decorating, a gift wrap station and silent auction, plus live music and photos with Santa. Stop, shop and sip with Santa. K

im Wonser has been serving drinks at the VFW Post 10211 for 10 years. She is a stepmother to a veteran and a granddaughter of a veteran. So she felt compelled to volunteer, serving breakfast for two years, before she jumped behind the bar. “We don’t sell a lot of fruity drinks here, usually just beer or a simple mixed drink,” said Wonser. “We keep it simple, we are easy here.” Wonser said she used to enjoy a Grand Marnier margarita when she’s on the other side of the bar. Those times have come to an end she said, due to the caloric content in the mixers. Now, she drinks Absolut, water, and a splash of cranberry juice. When she’s not bartending, she’s at home with her husband and her 16-year-old son. She leads a “quiet life.” Wonser has lived in Key Largo since 1979, and graduated from Coral Shores High School. The VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo serves veteran’s lunch and dinner. It serves the VA Hospital once every other month, and it serves the Wounded Warriors whenever they come through. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, it serves veterans free meals all day. On Tuesdays it holds members appreciation day, which includes halfprice drinks. Wonser is an Auxilliary to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Secretary and the Patriotic Instructor. For more information on the Key Largo VFW, located at MM 102, call 305-452-2120.

MILLENIALS

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 18, 2016

MILLENNIALS Millenial generation establishes itself in the Keys HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

L

iving in the Florida Keys is a challenge for every generation— be it Conch or transplant — all of us face money, housing, and career challenges. The Greatest Generation and Generation X have already faced the music … but have our Millennials? It seems resident Keys Millennials are proving more motivated and innovative than the stereotype. A common complaint about Millennials (or “Generation Me”) is they are “lazy and entitled.” Born

from 1980 on, Millennials are the first generation to grow up with the internet and electronics galore. Their tech savvy is unparalleled (until the next generation of social networking tweeters emerge from the Apple womb). So because of their centurial timing, Millennials have been the recipient of a worldwide campaign to woo them. No other generation has been targeted by America’s market forces so comprehensively, no other generation has been so thoroughly “parented.” Numbering roughly 75 million — eventually they, too, will simply grow up. Our survey of Keys Millenials found a couple of common threads —hard work, entrepreneurship and the universal grievance about the lack of shopping opportunities. Yes, we’re talking about Target, Ikea and Whole Foods.

6 FACTS ABOUT MILLENIALS • They will comprise more than one in three of adult Americans by 2020. • Millennials will make up as much as 75 percent of the U.S. workforce by 2025. • Eighty-nine percent expressed a stronger likelihood that they would buy from companies that supported solutions to specific social issues. • Millennials account for more than $1 trillion in U.S. consumer spending. ( • Eighty-seven percent of Millennials disagreed with the statement that “money is the best measure of success,” compared to about 78 percent of the total population. • The top ideal employers of currently employed Millennials are Google, Apple, Facebook, the U.S. State Department, and Disney. —brookings.edu

MILLENIALS

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 18, 2016

How different are island millenials?

HEATHER VARGAS, 27, grew up in Key Largo, graduating from Coral Shores. She’s the site director at the YMCA. She has two kids in Key Largo School and two younger ones at home still. Her husband works at Sharkey’s Pub and Galley at night. She said one advantage to growing up here in the Keys is class trips that feature snorkeling and diving. Vargas uses social media platforms daily and said she doesn’t see too much in terms of cyber bullying.

iPhone or Samsung? iPhone. Top three apps? Facebook, Snapchat and Pinterest. Where do you get your news? Infowars, Keysso and Pinterest. I use my phone.

How much do you spend on entertainment every week? I spend about $50 between four kids usually. None on the Internet. How much you pay in rent? I pay $500 a month in utilities; I live with my mom. Is climate change a concern? Yes. Why do you live here? My mom lives here, my job is good. I live in a close-knit community that is ideal to raise kids. Will you be here in 10 years? No.

DOMINIQUE WHITEHEAD, 27, was born in Key West and grew up in Key Largo. She considers herself a true Conch, not a millennial. She’s the program coordinator at YMCA. She runs summer camp, after care programs and youth sports. “I think children born a decade after millenials will have a disadvantage. They don’t interact with people anymore.” Whitehead said she grew up outside and interfaced with people daily. “Unless the tides change, it will be a disadvantage.”

iPhone or Samsung? iPhone. Top three apps? Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Where do you get your news? TV, Google, and newsstand on my

phone. How much do you spend on entertainment every week? Three hours a day on social entertainment, about 15 hours a week. I don’t really spend any money on entertainment. How much do you pay in rent? I live at home with my dad. Is climate change a concern? Yes. Why do you live here? I was raised here. I hate the cold; I can’t handle it.

THERESA JAVA

theresa@keysweekly.com

BIANCA BARNES, 21, has lived in Key Largo her whole life. She works at Ocean Blue Boatworks in Tavernier. She sells tilt trim motors, alternators and starters and is helping the company expand to Key Largo. She is a devoted mother to two young children, ages 5 and 2. She believes that her children will have more of an advantage than she did growing up. “They are surrounded by love and they go to a great school,” Barnes said. “They have structure and will learn to adapt to all the new technology that we have available, they’ll be responsible with it.” iPhone or Samsung? iPhone. Top three apps? Disney Junior, Spotify and Instagram. I have two kids!

Where do you get your news? I watch the news on TV every morning. How much do your pay in rent? I own. Is climate change a concern? If it starts snowing, then yes! It does stress me out that polar bears are running out of habitat. We used to have a lot more cold fronts it seems. Why do you live here? I was raised here. My family and friends are here. This is my home; I’m not going anywhere. Will you be here in 10 years? Yes, I’m working towards becoming a teacher in the Keys.
