Should Uber be allowed to operate in Key West?

There are two sides to every argument, maybe more when it comes to Uber vs. taxi debates. The pro and con list has valid points for both sides. Taxi drivers have worked hard for licenses and permits, and competition will affect their livelihoods — but it’s expensive. Uber — cheaper and easier to summon, but shouldn’t drivers have a medallion, be properly permitted and have some sort of accountability? We asked locals …

TRIBUTE
KEY WEST WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 25, 2016
Florida Keys State Representative Holly Raschein became friends with Madruga in 2008 and served with him on the board of Leadership Monroe County.
Manny Madruga graduated from University of Miami law school.
“This is a black mark on our precious, small community. This is going to be a long healing process because he touched so many lives in so many ways. “ —Holly Raschein
Raschein says Madruga was a pillar in the state’s capitol when it came to advocating for the legal field. “He would have been a great judge, state attorney, state representative or whatever he wanted to do,” she added. “He was a true gentleman and statesman.”

Late prosecutor touched many lives in the Keys
I
would receive a text reading “HH,” which was Manny’s code for happy hour. It was typically a Monday or Tuesday and it was understood we would meet at the Brewery. And it was equally understood I would have to endure relentless taunts ranging from his superior billiards abilities to how the Miami Hurricanes were the greatest program in college football history (and Manny could win any argument — especially those pertaining to Canes football). But these weekly sessions are what I will miss the most about Manny Madruga. If you knew Manny, he had sheepish grin that accompanied his jabs, but it was that same endearing trademark that made Manny, a tenacious prosecutor, one of the most approachable figures in the room. And perhaps that was Manny, a paradox. Inside the courtroom, he was a fierce prosecutor with an unrivaled passion for the law. Just after graduating from the University of Miami Law School, Manny joined the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office and shortly after prosecuted his first murder trial at the age of 26. Manny went on to prosecute some of the highest profile cases in the history of the county and in
FRIENDS REMEMBER MANNY MADRUGA Two days after his friend’s passing, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office General Counsel Patrick McCullah was still reeling and fighting back tears at the loss of his friend and colleague. He and Madruga first met in 1995 as prosecutors with the State Attorney’s Office. As trial partners, they became fishing buddies and eventually best friends while working together on a number of cases including the high-profile murder case of Jeffery Wallace.
“I just can’t get my head around it,” he said. “I spoke with him the night before and we were actively talking about a job search. I just wish he would have given me or someone else a chance to talk to him.” —Patrick McCullah
McCullah says he will remember Madruga as a great trial lawyer. “One of the best I have ever known.”
TRIBUTE
KEY WEST WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 25, 2016
2009 he was honored with the Gene Berry Memorial Award from the Florida Prosecuting Attorney’s Association — its highest honor. Yet Manny’s legacy outside of work was equally impressive. Madruga served on dozens of boards and devoted his time to countless non-profits, including the Boys and Girls Club, MARC House, Masonic Lodge, Key West Ambassador Program, Sunset Rotary and countless others. Today, a recent picture with members of Manny’s Leadership Monroe County Class serves as his profile picture on Facebook. He took great pride in staying connected with that particular group, which is where I met Manny in 2007. Just recently, he told me, “After all of these years, it makes me proud that our class still has the most representation at Leadership functions.” Sure, Manny was always competitive, but he also cared about preserving relationships. Manny had many friends, but one of his closest friends was his ex-wife, Ani. Manny would often remark that one of his proudest, and most thankful, achievements was that he and Ani remained close after their divorce. It was during one his stories about Ani that he once choked up. He was remarking on the early days and how she was incredible mother. It was the only time I ever saw him cry.
Family was sacred to Manny. In his last months, he spent weekends in Miami tending to his mother as she rehabbed from an illness. I would often invite him out to watch a game or shoot some pool, but Manny would text back that he was heading to his mom’s. He never once treated it as a duty. Instead, he would return to “HH” with updates on his mother’s progress and how proud he was of her determination. I don’t think he ever stopped to realize it, but his descriptions about his mother were reflections of his own fortitude and character. Above Hurricane football and deer hunting in South Georgia, Manny cherished trips to see his daughter Natalie in college. Some of Manny’s favorite stories involved something simple, such as some dinner in Orlando with Natalie, but those were their stories and not mine to tell. I can simply tell you that Manny loved his daughter as much as any father could. My stories are like so many others who knew Manny. He touched countless lives in a myriad of social and professional circles. The themes of these memories will all share a common denominator about a man whose artistry was words … yet he led by example in life. I don’t know how much love a person can give, but Manny gave every day — to so many people. And while we may never know exactly why our friend took his own life, I will always believe that Manny gave until he could give no more. And like all of us, I simply wish I could have one more text reading “HH.”
Doug and Sue Harrison served on the MARC Board of Directors with Madruga for a number of years. Doug recalls a particular Christmas party where the board could not get Madruga off the serving line. “Finally after several attempts Manny poured sauce on my shoe and said, ‘Health Department only lets clean shoes on the line,’” Doug said with a faint laugh. “Like everyone else, this caught us totally flat-footed,” Sue added. “We all feel like something has been taken away from us. I keep thinking it is about me, but it not about me.” Manny posted this picture of his daughter to his Facebook account in 2014 with the following caption: ‘Birthday dinner with the most special person in my life. Happy Birthday, Natalie. —Doug & Sue Harrison

van Agbo is a wonderful guitarist, with a style all his own. He is a local favorite, and has been performing regularly in Key West since he arrived in 2005. Well respected by his peers, Yvan’s musical style is Afro-jazz, funk and blues. Born in Dakar, Senegal, he started to play the guitar at 4 and was featured on TV for the first time at age 6. Yvan is one of the guest performers scheduled to play at the upcoming Sunday Ramble concert on Nov. 27. He will be collaborating with Jeff Clark and other Key West musicians to perform a tribute to George Victory and his music at the Ramble concert.
‘RAMBLE’ FEATURES ALL LOCALS
After arriving in Key West, the first musician Yvan met was George Victory, ex-guitarist for Peter Tosh and the Fatback Band. Yvan had the opportunity to perform with George regularly until George’s recent passing. “George was a very special musician … I remember driving in the car with him while he was talking on the phone with Jimmy Cliff. George played with everyone.” In addition to the tribute to George Victory, November’s Ramble concert will include performances by guest headliners Raven Cooper, Rolando Rojas, and Miguel Perez. Members of the Ramble Band will perform songs as well — Claire Finley, Ericson Holt, Jeff Clark, and Robyn Whitehead. The Ramble is Sunday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Key West Theater. Doors open 7 p.m. and some tickets are still available for the 21-yearold and over event. Book online at keywesttheater. com — Contributed

hen people come into Cuban Coffee Queen’s Key Lime Square location in need of a real “pick-me-up,” Barista Irena suggests the cortadito – a double Cuban espresso served with a small scoop of cane sugar and topped with steamed milk in an eight-ounce cup. “It’s a super strong con leche,” she said. This was Irena’s first job when she moved to Key West seven years ago after traveling down the East Coast from New Jersey. “We made a lot of stops along the way, but fell in love with Key West and I just decided to stay here,” she said. “I didn’t need to go anywhere else.” She loves the people she works with at Cuban Coffee Queen and says she has the best regulars who come in daily. “We really work as a great team,” she said. She said the cortadito goes best with the Cuban breakfast burrito or her favorite, the Cuban bagel (Cuban bread toasted with cream cheese, everything bagel mix, and a drizzle of honey). “Add a tomato and a little ham to the Cuban bagel to make it a real winner,” she said.

Three days of art, food, music and more… Make plans for ‘I Love Stock Island Festival’
T
he I love Stock Island Festival takes place Friday to Sunday, Nov. 25-27, with three great events not to miss: • First up, a good old fashion FISH FRY, Friday, Nov. 25 starting at 5:30 p.m. at Stock Island Marina Village on Shrimp Road. With delicious food being served up by Stock Island’s favorite restaurants — such as De Luna’s Cafe, Hogfish and Geiger Key Seafood, Pepper Pot Caribbean, Yahmon’s Authentic Jamaican Jerk Shack and many more — the fish fry will represent the best of island cuisine. When not enjoying the best BBQ of Cuban and Caribbean Cuisine, peruse a local vendor straw market for handmade wares. And don’t worry about the kids because there will be bounce houses and activities to keep them busy. Also, there will be dancing, local brews, and Sunset Sail Key West’s free “sail aways” from the marina docks.
• Then Saturday, Nov. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the public is invited to DISCOVER STOCK ISLAND. Festival goers can use their own cars, ride bikes, or hop on a free trolley. They can use a paper map available at participating businesses, or use the phone-friendly website — ilovestockisland.org. Businesses, restaurants, galleries and attractions will host open house specials.
WHEN AND IF Located on the docks at Stock Island Marina Village, the public is invited to stop by for a free tour of the historic When and If, originally built in 1939 for General George Patton. The ship will be inducted into the Conch Republic Navy on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 4 p.m.
11
Visitors can pick a “track” to follow. There are special tours for art lovers, history buffs, families or foodies. Here’s the best part — there is “treasure” to be found. Many of the participating businesses and organizations have on-site raffles for really cool prizes (need not be present to win). For example, Honu Life Charters is offering a two-hour charter valued at $200 while Carbone’s Custom Firearms is offering a fiveday emergency survival backpack kit. There’s also a chance to win a $200 gas card from the Chevron on Stock Island. • Finally, On Sunday Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., join the STOCK ROCK & ROLL BIKE BRUNCH RIDE. Bring your bike or rent one from WeCycle to experience this oneof-a-kind ride around Stock Island. Grab a group of friends and casually tour Stock Island while stopping for great local brunch treats at these participating restaurants: Croissants de France, Roostica, Hogfish Bar & Grill, Coast, De Luna’s, and Hurricane Hole. There will be music and guided history tours to first come, first serve. Free to participate but pay to eat and drink. — Weekly Staff report

‘Tis better to give, than receive Toys for Tots & Holiday Helpers collecting gifts for local children JASON KOLER

E
very year, thousands of deserving children throughout Monroe County benefit from the charitable work of two leading organizations who work tirelessly to ensure that every boy and girl makes it onto Santa’s Nice List. “A lot of the list comes off the school’s free and reduced lunch list – about 5,000 to 8,0000,” said Toys for Tots volunteer Kyle Burkel. “We raise more toys per capita that any other Toys for Tots Drive in the country.” The drive, part of the Marine Corps national Toys for Tots program, culminates with a Poker Run and Parade on Saturday, Dec. 17. The ride leaves Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo at 11:30 a.m. and concludes at the Oceanview Inn and Sports Bar in Islamorada. “The Keys being what they are,
everyone helps everyone else. All the toys that are raised go to local kids,” Burkel added. Toys for Tots drop-offs include any of the Islamorada Fire Stations, Capital Bank or Ocean Sotheby’s Real Estate. In Key West, the major player is Wesley House Family Services which organizes the Holiday Helpers of the Florida Keys toy drive. Spokesman Jeremy Wilkerson relies on a partnership of 10 agencies to collect toys for families who, for a number of reasons, may not have the resources to provide for their children during the holiday. They accept new, unwrapped toys at any of their offices throughout the Keys plus any Centennial Bank or Keys Federal Credit Union branch, Royal Furniture and Womankind. Both organizations are also accepting checks. For more information on the Poker Run contact Sgt. Lou Slagle at 305401-0149. The Wesley House can be reached at 305-809-5000.

hile en route to Sony Records, up and coming country music singer Brandon Ray was able to steal away a minute to chat from the back of an Uber on the way to the airport. “Life is so fast paced in Nashville,” he said. “When we are in Key West, we just get to slow down a little.” Spending plenty of time in Key West, the recording artist is looking forward to his upcoming one-night gig at Island Dogs Bar at 505 Front St. in Key West on Tuesday, Nov. 29. “My wife, Alyssa, and I have been vacationing in Key West for the past five years,” he said, looking forward to the perfect weather and cool watering holes. “And, everyone in Key West loves Nashville.” While in town last May for Singer Songwriters Festival, he and general manager of Island Dogs, David Thibault became friends. When Ray mentioned he would be back with his family at the end of November, Thibault jumped on the opportunity to have him play an acoustic show. “He’s a badass,” said Thibault. One of Ray’s singles out now — “American Way” — has been No. 1 on CMT’s 12-pack countdown for weeks. It’s also on the “New Boots” playlist on Spotify, and is being added to the Sirius XM country lists as well. His lyrics and music video won’t disappoint. His other songs

Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? My biggest inspiration at Key West High School would have to be Mr. Kremer because even though I never had him as a teacher, he has pushed me to strive for things I would never have imagined.

What are your plans after high school? After high school, I want to attend UCF and get my bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I don't think I'm going to stay in the Keys forever. I lived here all my life, I think it's time to go explore new places.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenges facing the Keys right now would have to be housing. It's really expensive to live down here and not a lot of people get paid enough to survive. I would lower the cost of housing or just give everyone a raise.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Mr. Whaley’s class has prepared me best for the future. Not only is he my math teacher, but he teaches valuable lessons about saving money and spending wisely. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? Instagram — it's easy to post. I always see things on there that make me laugh or smile. I follow just about everybody.

Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … life is like the weather, it's all over the place. But with the right materials and the right attitude you can overcome the smallest of things (like a rain storm) and chase your dreams.

Unbridled support for the horses Party to Benefit Key West Mounted Police Unit
K
ey West resident and business owner Jane Gardner, proprietor of Jane Gardner Interiors at 328 Simonton Str., is hosting a fundraiser for the Key West Police Department’s Mounted Police unit horses. The mounted unit presently has three horses and two officers. Why a fundraiser for the horses? The city budget provides for the stable at the Truman Waterfront, feed, hay, and basic equipment. But it is public fundraising that provides for emergency veterinarian expenses, certain specialty tack and equipment, the possibility of new horses, and out of budget items. “I went to the stable last week and had the opportunity to learn more about role of the unit horses in the community and how individuals and businesses can help support them,” said Gardner. “KWPD Mounted Police officers Matt Johnson and Mike Wolf explained that beyond their obvious role as equine ambassadors, Scout, Shmoo and Paco perform effective
crowd control work and are invaluable for furthering and promoting positive relations. As the officers said, ‘You are never approached by anyone asking to pet a police car.’” Throughout November, 10 percent of all purchases at her showroom and retail store will go into a fund to purchase and donate new equipment for the horses. At this time her focus will be on extra bridles, bits, saddle pads,

blankets, canvas saddle pouches and some stable equipment that is in need of repair and which is out of budget. Jane is also directing a product of her popular design talents to the unit’s benefit. In collaboration with Wisconsin-based illustrator Allison Beilke, Jane has designed a whimsical new fabric called ‘Paradise’ which will soon be sported by the Mounted Patrol horses in the form of horse-blankets. The colorful pattern features Key West scenes that the horses and officers pass by on their regular patrol rounds: Hemingway House, the Southernmost Point, Saint Paul’s Church, Tropic Cinema, 328 Simonton St., Royal Poinciana trees, Key West Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters, the Truman Little White House, The Custom House Museum, Old City Hall, a rooster, charming six-toed cats and conch houses. — Contributed

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
KEY WEST WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 25, 2016
THE TEMPEST IN A TEACHER
Adele Williams is the director of education at KWAHS HAYS BLINCKMANN
A
hays@keysweekly.com
dele Williams has as much energy and impact as a beautiful thunderstorm. Striking in every way, Williams mesmerizes the people around her and can command attention from the most discerning audience, children. With her lyrical Australian accent and worldly grace, Williams has taken Key West by storm for the past 12 years. Originally from Toowoomba, Australia, she was raised in Papua New Guinea, Australia, England, and Yugoslavia. She has brains, as well as beauty, a variety of degrees from the University of Tasmania, Charles Darwin University, and NOVA Southeastern University. As the director of education at Key West Art & Historical Society, Williams has transformed the program into a gift to children Keyswide. She spent a decade as a cherished Montessori kindergarten teacher and now Williams champions art education for all kids. Art Camp at East Martello has flourished under her direction providing year round creative and adventurous programs for kids. And the first Papio Kinetic Sculpture parade became an instant success under Williams’ direction. “Providing nontraditional, unconventional approaches to learning is the most satisfying aspect of my job,” said Williams. While she is still waiting for her Nobel Prize, her daughters, Story and Lilly will always be her greatest achievement.
“I want the children of this town to own our museums. I want them to know them like the back of their hand and boldly stroll through the front doors of the Custom House, Fort East Martello, and the Lighthouse and say to their visiting relatives and friends ‘follow me.’" —Adele Williams, of Key West Art & Historical Society
1. Full Name? Adele Yvonne Williams. 2. Worst nickname? Ding Dong Del, Pussy in the Well. It’s a line from a Mother Goose nursery rhyme about drowning cats. Ironic, considering I have six animal rescues living under my roof. 3. Which famous person would you bring back to life? Paging MLK Jr. You are needed for cleanup on aisle one. 4. If you could put one famous person in elected position in the Keys, who and why? FDR. No one has done more to preserve the fragile ecosystems of the Florida Keys than FDR. He wouldn’t bury his head in the sand when it came to mitigating the effects of climate change. 5. Who’s your favorite TV or movie teacher? Bill Nye. I can’t help but wonder what he would have done with Ms. Frizzle’s Magic School Bus. 6. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Oh, Mighty Isis. She set the precedent for female superheroes, predating the Bionic Women and Wonder Woman; such a trendsetter.
7. What is your nerdiest passion? Identifying mangrove invertebrates. And counting setae on the mouth parts of a marine annelid is intoxicating. 8. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what would it be? I don’t mean to objectify men, but it would have to be Bear Grylls. Not only could he keep me alive on urchin eggs and larvae, he is easy on the eyes. 9. If invisible what would you do in Key West? Sit in on a meeting between the city officials and local real estate developers. How can the cupola on my house arouse debate but a sleek, modern South Beach style building with private swimming pools in the heart of Old Town be just fine? 10. What was your first thought this morning? What meetings have I double booked? I wish I lived on a farm. 11. Favorite guilty pleasure? Cheese; the stinkier, the better. 12. What misconception do people have about teachers? That we are well behaved. Did you know Bettie Page was a teacher in Key West? 13. If not an educator, what would your dream job be? World Explorer. I have yet to find a listing on Monster.com.
14. Funniest Key West sighting or story? I was once touting the benefits of raising my children in Key West when an 80-yearold man walked across the road wearing nothing but a Dixie cup. He could have at least worn a Solo cup. 15. You are sitting at a diner counter eating, who would you want to walk in and sit next to you? Naturally, the diner would be Harpoon Harry’s. My father or Noam Chomsky. 16. Fill in the blank: I will change (my mind) when (you prove it to me). Finish these sentences … 17. My husband and children would describe me … as stark raving mad. 18. My autobiography would be titled … "Where’s your sense of adventure?" 19. The world needs more … bicycles. 20. When I go, I will go … having seen the world.

WHAT’S COMING
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH: Sunday, Nov. 27 @ 7 p.m. ‘Händel’s Messiah’ performance
SALT GALLERY: Through November Rebecca Bennet’s art exhibit
CUSTOM HOUSE: Thursday, Dec. 1 @ 6 p.m. Showing of ’90 Miles’
The 34th annual performance of “Händel’s Messiah” features volunteer singers who practice, and then perform, on the same day. After an initially modest public reception (in 1742!), the oratorio is now on of the most frequently performed choral works in Western music. The performance is a gift to the community and admission is free, and all are invited to a reception following the performance.
Artist Rebecca Bennet is currently showing at SALT Gallery on Fleming Street. Her exhibit — proving popular among collectors and newcomers alike — features more than 20 small realist abstractionist works of oils on paper framed in shadow boxes, highlighting her deft plein-air ability to merge light, space, memory, and observation.
Speaker Will Benson, a contributing writer to numerous fishing magazines and online publications and founder of World Angling, will show “90 Miles,” a short film he produced and filmed. It explores the fishing connection between the Florida Keys and Cuba — the connectivity of our fisheries, our cultures, and mutual dependence on the health of both.
KW BURLESQUE: Dec. 2-3 @ 8 p.m. ‘12 Days of Strip-Mas’ The 12 Days of Strip-Mas is a circus style extravaganza that brings the classic holiday song, “The 12 Days of Christmas,” to life. Key West Burlesque's creator and director, Tatah DuJour, combines the talents of world-class burlesque performers and high flying aerial acrobats with tongue and cheek comedy to create an extraordinary show at The Studios of Key West.
