MARATHON WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016 GABRIEL SANCHEZ

While the Keys doesn’t exactly transform into the expected winter wonderland, Conchs haven’t let latitudinal shortcomings keep them from missing out. The Keys sees its occasional snow fall, though artificial, and still strings colorful lights from trees, though tropical. Even the local traditions have morphed to fit some amalgamation of holiday cheer, paradise swagger, all with a dash of Bubba Conch ingenuity. So the Weekly asked…

What’s your favorite Keys holiday tradition? “The Christmas caroling on the fire truck that passes through town,” said Evelyn Cisneros.

Irismel Cisneros said, “Putting Christmas lights all around the house and, of course, the tree. You can’t have enough lights.”

3 Keys doctors qualify to prescribe Medical marijuana legal in one month GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

W

ith the passing of Amendment 2 on Nov. 8, Florida residents suffering from debilitating medical disease may seek out medicinal marijuana as a form of treatment. Beginning on Jan. 3, physicians who have completed training with the Florida Medical Association, and are qualified by the state, will be able to prescribe patients medical marijuana. In Monroe County, there are three so far. Key Largo’s Dr. Bobbie Krause Leben and Dr. Ian Rae, and Tavernier’s Sandra Schwemmer, can use medical marijuana to treat such diseases as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Statewide, about 200 doctors have qualified to prescribe medical marijuana. “I view it as another option for treating people with pain,” said Dr. Leben, who specializes in nonsurgical orthopedics. “For example, arthritis causes inflammation. If a patient couldn’t take anti inflammation medication because of kidney disease, they now have another tool for fighting pain. It’s also a way to treat pain without the side effects that opioids might have, like constipation and dizziness.” But there are steps in place to assure only patients who truly need medical marijuana receive it. Leben said she is required to submit patient dosing records and other record notes every quarter. And, patients shouldn’t expect to walk into a doctor’s office and walk out with a prescription; there could be up to a three-month period where patients are monitored. The patients must be listed on a “Compassionate Use” registry. The Compassionate Use registry is sort of like a paperless prescription registry. While the amendment has passed, the rules and regulations that would govern it have not. Here’s what is known: According to the Department of Health, three entities have qualified to cultivate marijuana, and three have quali-

Medical marijuana is not ‘whole flower,’ but rather available in capsules, sprays, oils, oral solutions and vapor.

If a patient is suffering from a condition determined to be terminal by two physicians, he or she may qualify for medical cannabis. Current law states that says a municipality may determine the criteria for the number and location of dispensaries.

fied to dispense marijuana, including Miami’s Modern Health Clinics. While Surterra Therapeutics has a storefront in Tampa, and Trulieve has two locations open, the dispensing clinics are authorized to mail the product. The product will never be “whole flower” — medical marijuana is not a bud. Instead, the dispensing clinics offer sprays, oils, capsules and vapors. The widening scope of qualifying patients will allow patients with a more generalized diagnosis to be treated. Leben said she expects the transition from amendment to reality to go smoothly. “Research also shows low abuse potential in marijuana users compared to opioids. I’m optimistic the new policies should roll out smoothly because of the extra oversight and low abuse rates,” said Leben. City thanks community For help with ‘Holiday Lights’ On Nov. 27, the City of Marathon Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual Lighting of the Holiday Lights event at Community Park. The Parks and Recreation Department wants to thank everyone who came out to support this annual event. An estimated crowd of 825, including a line to see Santa that wrapped around the park’s tennis courts, had a great time visiting Santa, getting gifts from the North Pole, decorating cookies, drinking hot chocolate, and enjoying the beautiful holiday lights that will light up Community Park until the new year rolls in. DJ Alexis Mendoza played holiday music throughout the evening. Marathon Mayor Dan Zieg, welcomed Santa as he arrived on a City of Marathon Fire Truck. Also escorting Santa to the park pavilion were Vice Mayor Michelle Coldiron, Councilman Mark Senmartin, Councilman Steve Cook, and City Manager Chuck Lindsey. Mike Puto served as Master of Ceremonies for the 13th year. The Parks and Recreation Department greatly appreciates the efforts of all of the volunteers that made this a very special event. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the following volunteers who greatly assisted in our event: Abrianna Marshall, Adam Gonzales, Alexis Mendoza, Cory Bittner, Jody Gonzales, Julian Lami, Kayleigh Reid, Sara Gonzales, Shynell Barrera and Syndi Barrera. Jimmy Schmidt, director Parks and Recreation City of Marathon Electric Co. responds to local I would like to personally thank the people at Florida Keys Electric Cooperative for caring about our environment and the animals that share our Keys home. When walking my dogs, I noticed a long trail of fishing line and a hook caught in some wires above the street. I could not get it freed and was concerned about birds getting tangled in it. FKEC was kind enough to dispatch a bucket truck to discard of the line that could have been a hazardous situation for our local birds. I appreciate their concern and help! Kathy Roberts Marathon

very year, the Zonta Club of Marathon puts on the Festival of Trees. This year, the trees are housed at the Florida Keys Country Club (formerly Sombrero Country Club). There is a record 40 trees this year up for grabs. The event is open to the public on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free. Guests are encouraged to purchase raffle tickets and “vote” for the trees they would like to win. The tickets are $5 each or six tickets for $20. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and we use the proceeds to support women and children in Marathon with free mammograms, scholarships and other needs,” said Michelle Franck, chairperson for the event. It’s worth a trip — every tree has a theme and some are quite clever. For example, one “tree” is actually an aluminum ladder dripping with lights and The Home Depot gift cards. Quite a few are playful — like the Lego tree decorated with boxes of toys and the super hero tree with ornaments featuring Wonder Woman, Captain America and more. Of course, there’s also the Coca Cola tree (it comes with a fancy, standing cooler) and the beach tree (that comes with an umbrella and a beach chair). “We also have really good gift baskets to bid on,” said Franck. In addition, little ones are welcome to come have cookies with Santa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The event culminates with a gala (cash bar). Tickets are $50 in advance or $75 at the door. It’s on Saturday, Dec. 3 and starts at 7 p.m. with music by Karen and the Funkin Conchs. The raffle tickets will be drawn at the gala.

arathon is incredibly proud of The Turtle Hospital. Not only is it one of our best attractions — a great place for visitors to spend a couple of hours learning about Keys wildlife — it’s also undeniably quirky. When tourists spot one of three Turtle Hospital “ambulances,” they can’t help but do a double take, mouths agape. “I won a car in a raffle and traded it for a van,” said founder Richie Moretti of the first ambulance, adding that the plain white van needed some visibility. “So we painted it orange, and that’s how we wound up with an ambulance.” The facility was started in 1986

due, in part, to the nascent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle craze sweeping the nation. Moretti arranged to bring a sea turtle to the local elementary children about the same time he noticed a troubling, widespread disease plaguing the turtles — fibropapilloma tumors. “That’s when I got hooked. When I realized this former Volkswagen mechanic could make a difference researching this infectious disease,” he said, “that I could take the profits from my motel, and help these turtles.” The Turtle Hospital now has three ambulances and staff more dedicated than ever to the cause. There’s a lot happening at hospital located on the gulfside and west end of Marathon. It has surgical theatres, education classrooms, plus multiple tanks where turtles convalesce. Some, injured too badly to survive in the wild, are permanent residents. A variety of turtle ailments are treated at the Turtle Hospital including flipper amputations caused by fishing line and trap rope entanglements, shell damage caused by boat collisions, and intestinal impactions caused by ingestion of foreign materials such as plastic bags, balloons, fishing line and/ or hooks. The most common surgery performed is the removal of debilitating viral tumors that affect over 50 percent of the sea turtles in the Keys and around the world. With the addition of a third turtle ambulance, dedicated solely to public outreach, the facility has a huge presence in the Keys. They go to fairs and festivals and visit schools. In addition, The Turtle Hospital does virtual classrooms using Skype, where students as far away as Germany get to see live turtle surgeries. “We go into classrooms in Colo-

rado and Indiana where many of the students have never seen the ocean. It’s very interactive and kids can raise their hands and ask questions,” said Bette Zirkelbach, The Turtle Hospital manager. “In May, we did 67 virtual fieldtrips in one month. We are inspiring a lot of young minds.” After a 15-year lull, The Turtle Hospital has partnered with other universities to resume research. In addition, it participates in the “Tour de Turtles” where animals are fitted with transmitters and released into the wild from Florida to Central America, trackable on the internet. “The ‘Tour’ turtle we released in July went straight to Cuba,” said Zirkelbach, adding it was serendipity. “Over the past few years we’ve been leveraging partnerships with Cuban researchers. We want to protect our common marine resources.”

Richie Moretti oversees the release of this turtle in November from Sombrero Beach. The releases have become huge events, wellattended by excited children and adults filming the experience with smartphones.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, right, watches a turtled being released in the ‘90s, when ‘True Lies’ was filmed in the Keys.

LIGHTED BIKE PARADE It’s the brightest thing on two (or three) wheels that helps needy kids Keyswide

D

id you know that last Christmas Wesley House Family Services gave 1,500 kids about three presents a piece for the holidays? Or, that this year their number has almost doubled for the amount of kids that need presents? Well, there is a way we can all help from Key Largo to Key West by bringing a present to one of the three lighted bike parades happening Keyswide. For the past eight years, hundreds of lighted bikes have lit up Key West from Bayview Park to Duval Street, and this year, two more events in Key Colony Beach and Key Largo have been added. “The need in the Middle and Upper Keys has grown for children and to meet that need, we have to figure out a way to get more toys,” said Wesley House’s Jeremy Wilkerson. “This is a fun event that brings people together for a good time.” On top of the three-mile, slow-paced ride, Santa will be at each event and children under the age of 15 will be fitted and given a helmet, if needed. “The ride is short, so everyone in the family can enjoy it,” Wilkerson said.

In the past, pods of lighted dolphins, presents, and Santa and Mrs. Claus, and just lit up bikes have participated, and it’s even fun to watch along the routes. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together for a good cause,” he said. An unwrapped present is all it takes to participate. Or, a cash donation is also welcome. “It’s for the kids, anything helps,” he said. To preregister for the ride, visit wesleyhouse.org, or just show up to the event with a present for a local child and brighten everyone’s holiday.

TEENS DELIVER HOLIDAY CHEER

Student Santas push to fill wish lists GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

M

arathon High School students involved in Keys to be the Change (KTBTC) are collecting gifts for teenagers and their younger siblings facing special circumstances this holiday season. What started as a grass roots movement to empower youth and adults to thrive in school and life, Keys to be the Change has been active year round in creating programs to change the lives of students facing adversity. Each high school-based group selects a focus to address each year. After looking at research and talking to peers, Marathon High School students have chosen to address poverty and homelessness. Their Christmas project has been focused on identifying the needs of teen students who come from particularly tough situations and working to fill their wish lists. Currently, more than 80 students have been interviewed and are having their lists filled. KTBTC President Delma Vega, a senior, says their effect on the commu-

nity has shown her that, “giving back is a reward to the heart.” “Club members have learned to be kind, accepting, and giving during this holiday season. This teaches us to appreciate the small things in life — like wrapping a single present for someone. It brings joy to that person and us,” said Vega. Along with their Christmas project, KTBTC organizes a clothing exchange every quarter. The next clothing exchange is scheduled to run from Dec. 5-15. “The first few days of the exchange, students in need can come and shop. At the end of the week, anyone can come trade gently worn clothing for other items,” said Dr. Christina Belotti, the student advisor for Marathon High School. In effort to be more effective, the organization has formed a Youth Advisory Council to share their progress and convey the needs of youth to local government. KTBTC also has incorporated national prevention and awareness initiatives into their monthly activities calendar to stay active and influential in the community. At the end of the year, students from KTBTC attend an international education program in Tallahassee, known as PeaceJam. At PeaceJam, the students have an opportunity to present their “call to action” to Noble Peace Prize Laureates, who in turn, encourage and work with them to create tangible solutions. “Dr. Belotti took the concept of Peace jam and reestablished Keys to be the Change,” said Vega. It started and grew as a countywide club and as people heard of its membership growing, we saw results,” said Vega. “I loved the idea of the club, and that through it we can change our communities.”

Marathon High School students of Keys to be the Change donned ‘YOLO’ shirts during this year’s Red Ribbon Week.

I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots. (Falsely attributed to Albert Einstein – but no less true.) The more social media we have, the more we think we’re connecting, yet we are really disconnecting JOHN from each BARTUS other. (JR) Today’s is a City Council modern techmember and a nology allows former Mayor of the City of Maraus to be conthon. John is also nected to our a musician who world in ways performs around we’ve never town at various been connected establishments. before. Through the miracle of widespread WiFi and the myriad handheld gadgets that connect to it, we’re never far away from our friends, family, or office. We can email or tweet our thoughts, send status updates, photos, and video through Facebook and something called Instagram and something called Snapchat and something else called Pinterest. We can text everybody in our contact list and expect to hear back from them instantly. Unfortunately, all this ability to connect with each other has really gotten in the way of our ability to truly connect with each other. The virtual world has become more appealing than the real world to a generation of tech users hell-bent on defining their reality on their terms. There’s just one problem with that: reality doesn’t bend to the wishes of the virtual world! I’m really not against the new digital world — really, I’m not. There are a lot of incredible advances that modern technology offers, like the ability to take high-res photos and HD video with one’s smartphone, and getting all one’s information from totally biased fake-news media outlets. Still, it seems that we have a new generation of tech users who

are becoming incapable of functioning in the real world. Take, for example, dinner: it used to be a time when the family or friends would come together for a communal shared experience over a (hopefully) tasty meal. Now, dinner seems to be nothing more than a collection of people with gadgets, connected more to their virtual friends and family than their real ones across the table. In this brave new digital world, you can say good morning or good night to all your Facebook friends, and let them in on all the things going on in your day. And nothing is more annoying at a live performance than people paying more attention to their devices than the musicians and artists performing on stage. Seriously, why spend $100 or more for a concert experience if all you are going to do is spend the time chatting/messaging/texting? At two relatively recent concerts, smartphone usage was strongly discouraged at the request of the artists. The Eagles had arena staff combing the aisles of the American Airlines Arena during their History of the Eagles tour in 2015, demanding that concertgoers put their devices away. And Bob Dylan had the Broward Center for the Arts staff doing the same thing at his concert the day before Thanksgiving. And I have no problem with that. And now there are these new VR glasses and headsets that allow smart device users to achieve 3D HD simulated reality. It’s like the real reality … really. Yep, it’s bad here in this brave new virtual world, and it’s not going to get better. But if the new digital generation turns out to be more interested in virtual sex than real sex, well — problem solved?

While in the midst of closing on his house and helping girlfriend Alani with their six-month-old son Adrian, he also found time to open Paradise Produce in Marathon last month. “There was a need for fresh food and good prices,” he said while organizing the colorful bins at the 4540 Overseas Highway location. “My family is very health conscious about what we eat and what we put into our bodies, and now I know where everything is coming from.” Moving to the Keys 10 years ago to manage local restaurants, he was alerted to the need for organic, nonGMO, healthy food. H

olding up a bushel of wheatgrass, smoothie and ‘shot’ king Todd Matthews said he loves his job at Food For Thought in the Gulfside Village plaza. “I really like the culture of the people who come in here,” he said. “They are healthy, clean-living people; it’s a good trip to be on.” Living about 80 percent organic himself, (“moderation is everything”), he loves that his offerings feature the freshest ingredients available and everything is made in house. His favorite is the wheatgrass and ginger shots, in a two-ounce shot glass, “they are fun.” He said other popular menu items are the mango tango smoothies and his favorite day is Quesadilla Day on Thursdays. Food For Thought also serves paninis, wraps, and falafels. Originally from Chicago, he migrated south with friends and, after a stint in Ft. Lauderdale, made it to the Keys about 10 years ago. When he isn’t at work, he’s hanging with his two dogs, Pico and Rosco. Food for Thought is located inside Gulfside Village, 5800 Overseas Highway, in Marathon. MMS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

MARATHON WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016 The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon Middle School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MMS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I play volleyball and soccer. They are important to me because it’s fun, I play with my friends, and it’s a good way to spend my time.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? Alexandra Gabrielle is an inspiration. She shows that school is important to her and so are sports. She is always kind to everyone. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Civics is important. After high school I want to be a lawyer and I think learning civics will help me be prepared for my future. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? The flower crown on Snapchat is my favorite. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenge is making sure everyone gets an education. I would encourage others to continue their education, such as dropouts or older people who never finished high school. What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to Florida State University or University of Miami and study law. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Yes, my life down here is like a paradise and I know so many people. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to be who I am today.

T

he Marathon Dolphins came up short at home against nonconference opponent Miami Country Day, with a final score of 3-1. The teams were scoreless at the half, though the Dolphins dodged a handful of defensive hiccups deep in their territory in the waning moments. In the second half, the defensive miscues boiled over, with the Spartans taking advantage of a Dolphin foul in the penalty area and an own-goal, to go up 2-0 before the water break. With less than ten minutes to play, the Spartans were up 3-0. Marathon’s Rodrigo Avena was able to score in the closing seconds of stoppage time to bring the final score to 3-1. “Our defense started to collapse after the first goal, and then once again after the second, followed by another a few minutes later,” said Coach James Murphy. Entering the week, the Dolphins were 1-0 in District play after a loss to Palmer Trinity. Less than a month away from district tournament action, the Dolphins are looking to turn things around and have become more comfortable says Murphy. The Dolphins moved to an overall record of 2-3 with the defeat. — Weekly Staff report

THE ARTS

MARATHON WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016

‘Nutcracker Key West’ returns

The ‘Fight of the Conchcracker and Rooster’ is epic.

Performance features local, international stars

N

utcracker Key West returns will be performed Saturday, Dec. 10 to Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center. Eight public performances are scheduled, with professional dancers from around the world joining 60 local performers to retell this beloved holiday tale. Key West’s local lore and maritime history set the stage with the story opening in 1864 at the Christmas party of the mayor of Key West. The adventure continues, taking young heroine, Clara, through a fight with the rooster king, battles with sailors and a trip to the coral reef where she floats over the wreck of the Atocha in a diving bell. Beautiful period costumes, special effects and delightful new

scenic enhancements contribute to the production, delighting audiences both young and old. The principal dancers in this year’s production are Camila Ferrera , dancing the role of the Sea Star Fairy with Nurlan Abougaliev as her Cavalier. Nurlan Abougaliev originally from Kazakhstan, danced professionally with the Russian National Ballet, Moscow City Ballet and Ballet Internationale prior to joining Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and attaining principal status. Camila Ferrera was born in New

Now Located at 8919 Overseas Hwy in the southwind plaza

Jersey, trained at The School of American Ballet and in 2011 she was accepted into the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School (JKO). While there she performed at the Metropolitan Opera House with American Ballet Theatre, and was awarded The ABT National Training Scholarship. In 2014, Ferrera joined the Joffrey Ballet’s Studio Company and in 2015 was promoted to the main company. Exciting soloists join Ferrera and Abougaliev. Among the men are, Ben-

jamin Rabe, a company member with Rochester City Ballet. An exciting performer, he has a huge vocabulary of movement. He will be dancing the Egret King and the Shark, as well as the Fighting Fish variation. Brent Whitney is the founder and co-artistic director of The Traverse City Dance Project and has danced with Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet NY, and the Key West Contemporary Dance Company, among others. This will be his fifth season dancing for Nutcracker Key West! Alex Scupinari danced with Petit Ballet in Curitiba, Brazil, before attending the School American Ballet in the United States on a full scholarship. He has performed with Los Angles Ballet, and toured with many companies including Ballet NY, Ballet San Jose, and Sacramento Ballet. He is currently the co-artistic director with Petit Ballet in Brazil, and is looking forward to visiting our city, and adding his talents to the production. In 2015, Nutcracker Key West was honored to become the only permanent production at Tennessee Williams Fine Art Center. Tickets can be purchased on Keystix. com with a special family night rate on Wednesday, Dec. 15.
