While the Keys doesn’t exactly transform into the expected winter wonderland, Conchs haven’t let latitudinal shortcomings keep them from missing out. The Keys sees its occasional snow fall, though artificial, and still strings colorful lights from trees, though tropical. Even the local traditions have morphed to fit some amalgamation of holiday cheer, paradise swagger, all with a dash of Bubba Conch ingenuity. So the Weekly asked…

What’s your favorite Keys holiday tradition? Chip Jenkins, of Overseas Kitchen, said, “Monica’s Christmas cookies from Overseas Kitchen. They’re awesome.”

“My family draws numbers from a hat and do a secret Santa. Buying gifts for them is always nice,” said Cole Dotson from the Trading Post Grocery Store.

“I usually invite friends over for dinner that don’t have anywhere to go,” said George Nance, of Islamorada Fish Co.

Lisa Wagner, also of Islamorada Fish Co., said, “Caribbean Club’s boat parade. I like to watch the boats go by while I lounge with a libation. They also do a secret Santa.”

Sandra Murphy, of Zero Dress Code, said, “Every Christmas since I was a kid we open the Bible and read the birth of Jesus as a family. It’s something I’ve continued to do to this day with my three kids.”

FKAA continues cisterns program Eligible for new, converted tanks

T

he Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority is continuing its “Cisterns in Paradise” rebate program. The program provides a great opportunity for residential and commercial customers to receive up to $500 for eligible projects. Qualifying projects include new cistern installations, conversions of septic tanks into cisterns, and refurbishment of existing, nonfunctioning cisterns. Customers will be reimbursed at the rate of up to $1 per gallon of usable rainwater capacity, to a maximum of $500 for conversions and new installations. Rebates for refurbishment projects are calculated using slightly different criteria, which take into account capacity and refurbishment expenses. The rainwater captured can be used for landscape watering, car

washing, boat washing and decorative fountains. The benefits go beyond conservation, however, as customers can reduce their water and wastewater bills for years to come. A 2,000 square-foot roof can capture 1,200 gallons of water during a 1-inch rainfall. To date, 55 cisterns have been created with the assistance of this funding. “The program was implemented, by design, to coincide with the installation of central wastewater in the Keys,” said FKAA Executive Director Kirk Zuelch. “The central wastewater project leads to the abandonment of septic tanks, providing a great opportunity to repurpose these tanks for rainwater catchment.” To apply, customers need to complete the rebate application available at any FKAA customer service office or online in the Conservation section at www.fkaa.com. For more information go to www.fkaa.com or call Shelli Johnson

3 Keys doctors qualify to prescribe Medical marijuana legal in one month GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

W

ith the passing of Amendment 2 on Nov. 8, Florida residents suffering from debilitating medical disease may seek out medicinal marijuana as a form of treatment. Beginning on Jan. 3, physicians who have completed training with the Florida Medical Association, and are qualified by the state, will be able to prescribe patients medical marijuana. In Monroe County, there are three so far. Key Largo’s Dr. Bobbie Krause Leben and Dr. Ian Rae, and Tavernier’s Sandra Schwemmer, can use medical marijuana to treat such diseases as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Statewide, about 200 doctors have qualified to prescribe medical marijuana. “I view it as another option for treating people with pain,” said Dr. Leben, who specializes in nonsurgical orthopedics. “For example, arthritis causes inflammation. If a patient couldn’t take anti inflammation medication because of kidney disease, they now have another tool for fighting pain. It’s also a way to treat pain without the side effects that opioids might have, like constipation and dizziness.” But there are steps in place to assure only patients who truly need medical marijuana receive it. Leben said she is required to submit patient dosing records and other record notes every quarter. And, patients shouldn’t expect to walk into a doctor’s office and walk out with a prescription; there could be up to a three-month period where patients are monitored. The patients must be listed on a “Compassionate Use” registry. The Compassionate Use registry is sort of like a paperless prescription registry. While the amendment has passed, the rules and regulations that would govern it have not. Here’s what is known: According to the Department of Health, three entities have qualified to cultivate marijuana, and three have quali-

Medical marijuana is not ‘whole flower,’ but rather available in capsules, sprays, oils, oral solutions and vapor.

If a patient is suffering from a condition determined to be terminal by two physicians, he or she may qualify for medical cannabis. Current law states that says a municipality may determine the criteria for the number and location of dispensaries.

fied to dispense marijuana, including Miami’s Modern Health Clinics. While Surterra Therapeutics has a storefront in Tampa, and Trulieve has two locations open, the dispensing clinics are authorized to mail the product. The product will never be “whole flower” — medical marijuana is not a bud. Instead, the dispensing clinics offer sprays, oils, capsules and vapors. The widening scope of qualifying patients will allow patients with a more generalized diagnosis to be treated. Leben said she expects the transition from amendment to reality to go smoothly. “Research also shows low abuse potential in marijuana users compared to opioids. I’m optimistic the new policies should roll out smoothly because of the extra oversight and low abuse rates,” said Leben. WEEKLY INTERVIEW

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016

SNAPSHOT INTERVIEWING AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER Doug Finger 1. Full Name: William Douglas Finger.

A

fter an absence of almost two decades, Doug Finger, 39, has returned to the Keys. After graduating from Coral Shores High School, Finger moved to Gainesville, first attending Santa Fe Community College before transferring over to University of Florida. He said one of his humanities professors suggested photography and (pun intended) the career clicked. He graduated from U of F with a bachelor of science in photojournalism and a minor in anthropology. (Go Gators!) “I was hired as an intern at the Gainesville Sun right out of college,” he said, “and when there was an opening, I was promoted to fill it.” After 13 years of incredible work (including being published in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Tampa Bay Times, Sports Illustrated, etc.) he moved home to be closer to family with his wife, Kimberly, and young son, Falon, 3. Right now, he’s focused on building a one-stop multimedia business geared specifically toward Realtors — aerial work, interiors and exteriors and head shots. Check out his remarkable work at dougfinger.com.

2. Best career advice? Just ask. They might say ‘yes.’ 3. How many cameras do you own? Three, but I have a favorite — the Canon 5D MarkIII. I’d probably buy another one of those or the new Canon 5D Mark IV 4. How many cameras will you have next month? Four, there’s a drone on order I’m really excited about. I think it will be especially helpful when shooting real estate photos. People want to see the spatial relationship between the house and the waterfront. 5. Which famous photographer (dead or alive) would you like to collaborate with? Sebastião Salgado. 6. Who is your favorite TV or movie photographer? Spider-Man. 7. If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do in the Keys? Watch my son interact with everyone at his school. 8. What was your first thought this morning? SNOOZE button. 9. What is your favorite guilty pleasure? My wife’s lasagna … WOW! 10. What is a common misconception/myth about photographers? We just hit a button. 11. If you weren’t a photographer, what would your profession be? Teacher. 12. Craziest Keys encounter? Getting sucker punched by an Alabama fan at Rick’s in Key West for wearing a Gators hat. 13. What’s your most favorite photo that you’ve shot? I’ve though about this a lot, but I can’t say. My favorite shots are those that aren’t staged, though, just serendipity. A lot of times I’ll just hold my camera and wait to see what happens next.

14. What is your spirit animal? Tarpon. I always have worn a tarpon pendant on my necklace. Do I fish for them a lot? I don’t. I fell in love with them after watching a school feed on a school of mullet. They hit the water with such an explosion as they inverted themselves mouths open. 15. You’re sitting at a diner and somebody sits down next to you; who is it? My dad. He passed when I was young. I still get choked up even though it’s been so long. 16. What’s the most important photographic element — lighting, composition, story telling, detail, or color? Truth. 17. Photoshop or #nofilter? Depends on the audience. In photojournalism we use Photoshop like you would in a darkroom — only the basics such as cropping, toning and color correction. When it comes to art photography, I’d say go for it. Use all the filters you want. But distinguish the two from one another always. 18. How much time do you spend editing photos? Let’s just say I’ll spend more time editing than shooting. Finish these sentences … 19. What I love about my son … is his heart. 20. The world needs more … education.

CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016 The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Cane Pride.”

What are your plans after high school? I am honored to have received nomination to the United States Naval Academy class of 2021. I am waiting for final approval from USNA. I hope to have a career in the Navy, on the water. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I will always have the Keys close to my heart, though I plan on living in cooler temperatures in the mountains and returning for spearfishing trips.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? My biggest challenge is scrounging up enough gas money for daily trips to the Everglades or out to the reef diving. Many hours mowing lawns, working on fishing charters, or carpentry work usually yields money, though.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? Mrs. Rosenow and the Coral Shores Marine Science 2 Program is my inspiration. With my buddy Mitch Kraus, I have put together a 1,400-gallon aquaculture tank system. Mrs. Rosenow has been knowledgeable, flexible, while not losing efficiency in the classroom and has helped me find new opportunities and the freedom to explore a huge project.

EDWARD JANKOWSKI

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I love sports. I played varsity soccer my freshman and sophomore year. In addition, I participated in tennis, basketball, and now I am excited to return to baseball. Also, I have been faithful to the Environmental Club and to the constant demand of my many AP courses and daily homework. All my involvement at school has helped shape my character. It has helped me meet many great people, and has given appreciation and drive for completion in the classroom and on the field or court.

His even-keeled voice matches his melodic strumming. He started playing music when he was 8-years old on a single snare drum in grade school. He still bangs the drums but he is “not a drummer.” Izquierdo went on to play in the marching band at Coral Shores High School, picking a different instrument every year. He was a part of marching band throughout college (at two different schools) and majored in music education. Today, he plays mostly bass guitar, guitar and saxophone. He sings, too, and he moves (“It doesn’t always look like dancing,” he said.) He plays covers — Pink Floyd, Jack Johnson and The Beatles. He also writes his own stuff. “I write music more so than songs – I’m not much of a lyricist,” said Izquierdo. He said he starts

Oh, and he’s in charge of his own music website and the coming-soon Oceanside Vibe band he is in the process of forming. During his rare downtime, Izquierdo hangs out with his friends, watches football and roots for his favorite teams, the Greenbay Packers or the Miami Dolphins. side from their seaside views and its pristine location, the Raw Bar at Postcard Inn also has a rich history in terms of taste. The Raw Bar is considered by many to be the home of the original Rum Runner. So it is only fitting that bartender Kristi Daugherty uses equal parts Rum Runner mix and Piña Colada, plus a floaters of Meyer’s Rum for good measure, to make her favorite frozen drink — a Pain in the Ass. “It was originally named a Pain in the Ass because bar tenders would have to dirty up two blenders to make it. It’s a little easier to make nowadays, and goes great with our blackened Mahi tacos,” said Daugherty. The Birmingham native has called South Florida home for the last 18 years, and has lived everywhere between Ft. Lauderdale down to Key West. On Saturdays she spends the day with family on the pontoon boat, going for family bike rides, or screaming “Roll Tide” at the TV. Now that the weather is getting cold, Daugherty says she’s most excited to have a bonfire. Her favorite pastimes include cooking, enjoying a glass of a tasty Malbec, and writing poetry. Winners in weight loss 12 locals compete in challenge

T

he Florida Department of Health in Monroe County recently conducted a Biggest Loser and Healthiest Weight challenge in Tavernier. The challenge was launched the second week of September and ended on the second week of November. Seventy pounds were lost during the eight-week period among 12 Upper Keys residents who participated in the contest open to the public. As part of the challenge, contestants were provided weekly hints, tips, and other educational information on healthy eating habits and integrating exercise into their daily routine. Using a Bioimpedance Analyzer, the participants’ body fat percentage and basal metabolic rate were also measured. These contests provide a cash incentive to motivate participants to learn and stick with a newfound wellness regimen. Proceeds that were collected from these challenges were split among the top three biggest losers. • 1st Place female: Shirley Wilson lost 6.47 percent of her baseline body weight and won $220. Wilson said, “This challenge worked for me because it kept me accountable. Knowing I had to weigh-in every week was important for my success.” She also has shared her the weekly exercise and nutrition tips from the challenge with her coworkers. “I now have my whole office doing ‘tabata’ interval style training workouts daily!” • 2nd Place female: Jannet Avalos lost 4.33 percent of her baseline body weight and won $131. • 3rd Place female: Denise Moore lost 3.94 percent of her baseline body weight and won $87. • 1st Place male: Wayne Gwilliam lost 10.23 percent of his baseline body weight and won $50. Gwilliam is a two-time Biggest Loser competitor and won second place in the department’s spring challenge earlier this year. • 2nd Place: Dave Clark lost 0.28 percent of his baseline body weight and won $17. The Health Department has conducted a dozen or so of these competitions so far. It is planning more challenges next year. “B

uy a Tree, Change a Life,” is a countrywide movement in it’s inaugural year at Island Christian School in Islamorada. Its mission is to raise money to help children globally and locally. Trevor Mann along with his wife, Nicki, initiated the program here locally. Since last week, Mann has spent a lot of time under the big red and white tent in front of the school selling Frasier fir trees. By day, Mann is the Island Community Church Youth Pastor and the tree site coordinator. Last week the 190 trees came by truck to the site and about 60 more are to arrive by this weekend. Mann hopes to sell out completely as proceeds go to the charity. Mann fundraised local sponsors to offset the cost to ship the trees here and other needed supplies. The biggest sponsor this year was donated “In Memory of John Bell,” who was a loving father who passed away several years ago to cancer. “We give 85 percent of proceeds to Cambodia through the organization People for Caring and Learning. The program supports education through college in communities where it’s needed most,” Mann said.

The remaining 15 percent stays local for a local education non-profit. “At the end I’ll know how much money is left and what I’m able to give,” Mann said. The idea occurred to Mann about five years ago when the Homestead Life Group helped a family adopt a second child by selling Christmas trees. The trees range in price starting at $30 for a 5- to 6-foot tree and increases incrementally by the foot. “I’m putting a billion hours into this and I’m not keeping a single cent,” Mann said, smiling.

LIGHTED BIKE PARADE It’s the brightest thing on two (or three) wheels that helps needy kids Keyswide

D

id you know that last Christmas Wesley House Family Services gave 1,500 kids about three presents a piece for the holidays? Or, that this year their number has almost doubled for the amount of kids that need presents? Well, there is a way we can all help from Key Largo to Key West by bringing a present to one of the three lighted bike parades happening Keyswide. For the past eight years, hundreds of lighted bikes have lit up Key West from Bayview Park to Duval Street, and this year, two more events in Key Colony Beach and Key Largo have been added. “The need in the Middle and Upper Keys has grown for children and to meet that need, we have to figure out a way to get more toys,” said Wesley House’s Jeremy Wilkerson. “This is a fun event that brings people together for a good time.” On top of the three-mile, slow-paced ride, Santa will be at each event and children under the age of 15 will be fitted and given a helmet, if needed. “The ride is short, so everyone in the family can enjoy it,” Wilkerson said.

In the past, pods of lighted dolphins, presents, and Santa and Mrs. Claus, and just lit up bikes have participated, and it’s even fun to watch along the routes. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together for a good cause,” he said. An unwrapped present is all it takes to participate. Or, a cash donation is also welcome. “It’s for the kids, anything helps,” he said. To preregister for the ride, visit wesleyhouse.org, or just show up to the event with a present for a local child and brighten everyone’s holiday.

• Coupons for the Tourist Development Tax will be mailed out this month. Taxpayers not registered online can register at www.monroetaxcollector.com. • Mobile home owners. BUSINESS

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016 Rob Marz, left, Cary Marz, Jevon Smith and Mario Lentini are excited as they do the final prep before opening the Twisted Shrimp next week.

TWISTED SHRIMP THERESA JAVA

theresa@keysweekly.com

The eatery is just a little off kilter

C

ary Marz’s well-laid plan that started two years ago is finally a reality as his new restaurant, Twisted Shrimp, is set to open next week. The menu is in place and the staff is in line. The new eatery at MM 87.7 offers “seafood, chicken and more – with a twist.” Marz pride lies in the myriad of homemade sauces available. “We have some spicy, some rich and some fruity sauces. We also have traditional cocktail sauces. Everything is a little offset from the Keys original,” said Chef Jevon Smith. The menu boasts about 10 different sauces such as rum glaze, Coconut Craze, cilantro lime, Caribbean Sunset and more. It also serves Buckets O’ Chicken and Buckets O’ Shrimp, shrimp and grits, and Pork Chop on a Stick. Marz said, “I wanted something different, something to stand out from the other restaurants in the area.” The new eatery offers interactive fun with its staff, fast and delicious food — for dine-in or take out. Marz foresees being able to offer delivery further down the road. He also plans to be running “like a well-oiled machine” within a month, which is the busiest time for many restaurants in the Keys.

After a year of undergoing extensive construction, Marz is ready. He said, “We had to go through planning and zoning and, overall, it went smoothly. It progressed to what it is.” Marz has decorated the place with nautical antiques including an actual 1920s ship’s wheel. Twisted Shrimp also plans on weekly specials and offering a special everyday of the week like “Backwood Boil” on Mondays or Jambalaya Tuesdays. These details have yet to be worked out, “but they’re coming.” As for being interactive, Marz is “toying” with putting mind-benders and brain-teasers in a bucket on the counter. Customers will be invited to solve them and if they do so successfully by the time the food is done — the meal is on the house.

What’s on the menu? Crab cakes on bed of mixed greens.

The grand opening is tentatively set for Sunday, Dec. 10. Stop by to sample a free bite, have a drink and listen to music.

Marz who hails from Chicago plans on putting in a lot of hours. He’s used to long days in the construction business followed by two hours or more of commuting. He’s eager and excited to do the work, as this was something he always wanted to do. He simply wants to offer a bucket of shrimp for takeout so people can go and sit on a dock, enjoy the warm weather and sunsets and “pop tails.” The Twisted Shrimp is at 87745 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. It’s set to be open for lunch and dinner every day, except Tuesdays. Parking is available in front and out back accessed via the Old Road.

“I want people to have a good eating experience. It’s a little twisted, the owner is a little twisted.” —Cary Marz, owner

ANNIVERSARY

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016 In this photo from the 1980s, a young Dr. Doug Mader, veterinarian, points to a pulse oximeter donated by artist Wyland, center, as Richie Moretti looks on.

Turtle Hospital has rehabbed and released more than 2,000 turtles SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

M

arathon is incredibly proud of The Turtle Hospital. Not only is it one of our best attractions — a great place for visitors to spend a couple of hours learning about Keys wildlife — it’s also undeniably quirky. When tourists spot one of three Turtle Hospital “ambulances,” they can’t help but do a double take, mouths agape.

For many years, The Turtle Hospital was located on, and funded by, Moretti’s mom-andpop motel called the Hidden Harbor. This is a postcard extolling its virtues.

The Turtle Hospital has become a mainstay attraction in Marathon with tours available daily.

“I won a car in a raffle and traded it for a van,” said founder Richie Moretti of the first ambulance, adding that the plain white van needed some visibility. “So we painted it orange, and that’s how we wound up with an ambulance.” The facility was started in 1986 due, in part, to the nascent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle craze sweeping the nation. Moretti arranged to bring a sea turtle to the local elementary children about the same time he noticed a troubling, widespread disease plaguing the turtles — fibropapilloma tumors.

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / DECEMBER 2, 2016

“That’s when I got hooked. When I realized this former Volkswagen mechanic could make a difference researching this infectious disease,” he said, “that I could take the profits from my motel, and help these turtles.” The Turtle Hospital now has three ambulances and staff more dedicated than ever to the cause. There’s a lot happening at hospital located on the gulfside and west end of Marathon. It has surgical theatres, education classrooms, plus multiple tanks where turtles convalesce. Some, injured too badly to survive in the wild, are permanent residents. A variety of turtle ailments are treated at the Turtle Hospital including flipper amputations caused by fishing line and trap rope entanglements, shell damage caused by boat collisions, and intestinal impactions caused by ingestion of foreign materials such as plastic bags, balloons, fishing line and/ or hooks. The most common surgery performed is the removal of debilitating viral tumors that affect over 50 percent of the sea turtles in the Keys and around the world. With the addition of a third turtle ambulance, dedicated solely to public outreach, the facility has a huge presence in the Keys. They go to fairs and festivals and visit schools. In addition, The Turtle Hospital does virtual classrooms using Skype, where students as far away as Germany get to see live turtle surgeries. “We go into classrooms in Colorado and Indiana where many of the students have never seen the ocean. It’s very interactive and kids can raise their hands and ask questions,” said Bette Zirkelbach, The Turtle Hospital manager. “In May, we did 67 virtual fieldtrips in one month. We are inspiring a lot of young minds.” After a 15-year lull, The Turtle Hospital has partnered with other universities to resume research. In addition, it participates in the “Tour de Turtles” where animals are fitted with transmitters and released into the wild from Florida to Central America, trackable on the internet. “The ‘Tour’ turtle we released in July went straight to Cuba,” said Zirkelbach, adding it was serendipity. “Over the past few years we’ve been leveraging partnerships with Cuban researchers. We want to protect our common marine resources.”

This turtle has a tremendous fibropapilloma tumor on its neck. It was the spread of this disease that inspired The Turtle Hospital’s founding.

Richie Moretti oversees the release of this turtle in November from Sombrero Beach. The releases have become huge events, wellattended by excited children and adults filming the experience with smartphones.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, right, watches a turtled being released in the ‘90s, when ‘True Lies’ was filmed in the Keys.
