What better way to sentimentalize the holidays than music? Year after year, the same favorite Christmas songs are piped through the airwaves into our homes, cars, and every store in the Keys 24/7. Whether buying red and green sprinkles or a new chop saw, the bells are harking overhead and Rudolph, with his nose so bright, is guiding his sleigh tonight. But then again, there are other songs — songs that just make us cringe whether over played, or over done. So, radio DJ’s take note, we asked locals …

3 Keys doctors qualify to prescribe Medical marijuana legal in one month GABRIEL SANCHEZ
gabriel@keysweekly.com
W
ith the passing of Amendment 2 on Nov. 8, Florida residents suffering from debilitating medical disease may seek out medicinal marijuana as a form of treatment. Beginning on Jan. 3, physicians who have completed training with the Florida Medical Association, and are qualified by the state, will be able to prescribe patients medical marijuana. In Monroe County, there are three so far. Key Largo’s Dr. Bobbie Krause Leben and Dr. Ian Rae, and Tavernier’s Sandra Schwemmer, can use medical marijuana to treat such diseases as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Statewide, about 200 doctors have qualified to prescribe medical marijuana. “I view it as another option for treating people with pain,” said Dr. Leben, who specializes in nonsurgical orthopedics. “For example, arthritis causes inflammation. If a patient couldn’t take anti inflammation medication because of kidney disease, they now have another tool for fighting pain. It’s also a way to treat pain without the side effects that opioids might have, like constipation and dizziness.” But there are steps in place to assure only patients who truly need medical marijuana receive it. Leben said she is required to submit patient dosing records and other record notes every quarter. And, patients shouldn’t expect to walk into a doctor’s office and walk out with a prescription; there could be up to a three-month period where patients are monitored. The patients must be listed on a “Compassionate Use” registry. The Compassionate Use registry is sort of like a paperless prescription registry. While the amendment has passed, the rules and regulations that would govern it have not. Here’s what is known: According to the Department of Health, three entities have qualified to cultivate marijuana, and three have quali-
Medical marijuana is not ‘whole flower,’ but rather available in capsules, sprays, oils, oral solutions and vapor.
If a patient is suffering from a condition determined to be terminal by two physicians, he or she may qualify for medical cannabis. Current law states that says a municipality may determine the criteria for the number and location of dispensaries.
fied to dispense marijuana, including Miami’s Modern Health Clinics. While Surterra Therapeutics has a storefront in Tampa, and Trulieve has two locations open, the dispensing clinics are authorized to mail the product. The product will never be “whole flower” — medical marijuana is not a bud. Instead, the dispensing clinics offer sprays, oils, capsules and vapors. The widening scope of qualifying patients will allow patients with a more generalized diagnosis to be treated. Leben said she expects the transition from amendment to reality to go smoothly. “Research also shows low abuse potential in marijuana users compared to opioids. I’m optimistic the new policies should roll out smoothly because of the extra oversight and low abuse rates,” said Leben. atching water vapor straight from Florida Keys’ skies, Everdew water can’t get any more pure, or any more homegrown. Founders Maria Ershova and Duane Orridge, Big Pine Key residents for the past four years, came up with the idea brainstorming using their business and engineering backgrounds. “There isn’t a lot of manufacturing down here, so we are pretty lucky to produce here,” said Orridge. The two traveled the world before settling in the Keys, surmising that this climate was most perfect for water production. “Compared to other bottled water brands on the market, Everdew is proud that it originates from the cleanest eco-source of water available in the world — the sky” said Ershova, who lives an active lifestyle and knows hydration is essential to her wellbeing. “No chloride, fluoride, or sodium makes any appearance in our water.” According to the business partners, most bottle water comes from the ground or the faucet. Everdew’s water making process is simple – warm, humid air and a cool, clean environment. Water is pulled from the moisture in the environment; its by-product is fresh air. “The Keys are perfect for this — a Caribbean climate, clear skies and sweeping sunsets — the best ingredients for our water,” said Ershova. Everdew has crucial electrolytes and essential minerals added. “We stay healthy when our cells are mineralized well and oxygenated,” Ershova said. Jenny Sullivan, owner of Cone Republic, an ice cream food truck located in Big Pine Key, sells Everdew at her shop. “It perfectly complements the holistic, local lifestyle I promote here,” she said, offering compotes and toppings made from organic fruits grown down the street at Grimal Grove. “Local is best.” “We want to start a trend where people look at where their water is from, and the quality,” said Orridge. “We have a great local following, which is really cool.” More information on the product, visit drinkeverdew.com

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
KEY WEST WEEKLY / DECEMBER 9, 2016
Behind The Scenes HAYS BLINCKMANN
20 Questions with Joyce Stahl
hays@keysweekly.com
Any conversation about Key West’s epic production of “The Nutcracker” involves one person — Joyce Stahl. She’s the producer, director, former ballet dancer and founder of Paradise Ballet Theater. Commanding and vigorous, Stahl is the powerhouse behind the most popular ballet in town. Every two years she gathers an army of 50 professional ballet dancers, about 50 eager Keys children and a few dedicated local performers to revive and revamp the time-honored production. Most notably, the Key West version of “The Nutcracker” is original — incorporating local lore and symbols of our island life and cementing it as a Keys’ holiday tradition. Stahl, a full time resident of Key West but a New Jersey native, had an illustrious career for 38 years with New Jersey’s American Repertory Ballet after attending St. Lawrence University and Butler University. The idea to produce “The Nutcracker” came in 2003 when Stahl realized, “I had performed in the show for 38 years and missed celebrating Christmas on stage with all the children.” When the show debuted in 2005, Stahl pulled it together despite four hurricanes and has since received recognition from The Chamber of Commerce and honored by Samuel’s House as an “Overall Community” honoree. “It is very lively with a special warmth and intimacy, and manages to entrance the three-year-old old and keep the 90-year-old awake,” said Stahl about the production’s success. Under her direction, care and leadership, hundreds of locals have enjoyed and applauded “The Nutcracker” whether on stage or off — it has become a show not to be missed. And how does Stahl spend her downtime? What downtime? She teaches at her company, Paradise Pilates, seven days a week.
1. Full Name? Joyce E. Stahl. 2. Worst nickname? None, but I am sure I am called a few names now and then. 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Audree Estey, not too famous, but Act I Scene 1was choreographed by her and it would be fun to find out what she thought of the Key West production! 4. If you could put one famous person in elected position in the Keys, who and why? I would not put a famous person in an elected position in the Keys. The people who live here should elect their own local residents who understand what it’s like to live here, know what should be done, and how to get it done. 5. If you won the lottery, what would you do? Support the arts in this community, and set up an endowment fund for Nutcracker Key West.
Stahl’s favorite part about the production: “Working with the children and seeing them take on all the roles in the production besides the one that they were cast in!”
6. How did you become a dancer? I took class every day for 50 years. 7. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Wonder Woman and I are about the same age! 8. What is your nerdiest passion? Classical music. 9. If you could take three items on a deserted island, what? why? A knife (duh), mascara (you never know who will show up) and my Tempurpedic mattress. 10. If invisible what would you do in Key West? Go outside. 11. What was your first thought this morning? I didn’t know I was supposed to remember it, so I didn’t! 12. Favorite guilty pleasure? Dairy Queen. 13. What misconception do people have about ballet? That all the men are gay. 14. If not a dancer, then what dream job would you have? I have my dream job as a Pilates instructor. 15. You are sitting at a diner counter eating … who would you want to walk in and sit next to you? My dog. Finish these sentences … 16. My family would describe me as … a perfectionist. 17. My autobiography would be titled … “Do it Again.” 18. I know all the lyrics to … “3 Blind Mice.” 19. The world needs more … love and laughter. 20. When I go, I will go … producing “Nutcracker Key West.”

ight bikes sit at the hub in front of Sunset Pier at Ocean Key Resort, but they aren’t just any bikes on a rack, they are instabikes. With two minutes and a couple clicks in an app, walkers can become riders with ease. Celebrating its year anniversary in Key West, owners Capt. Sean Blaise and wife Amanda are hoping the new year will bring more bikes and hubs to Key West. “We hit a couple road blocks along the way,” said Sean, who has been in front of the city commission and planning board several times in the past year. “But, we are working on more stations and racks in Old Town.” The two conceived of the idea when visiting, out-of-town friends wanted to rent bikes but soon ran into trouble — delays for drop off and pick up, then subpar quality. Then the Blaises discovered instabike in Orlando. “You only pay as you pedal,” said Sean. The idea is that a person can charge $8 to a credit card for an hour and use the bikes as needed throughout the day. A ride from
Ocean Key Resort to Southernmost Beach Resort would leave money on the account to use again, but the nice thing is the person could just leave the bike locked there and have lunch and return to pedal later … or not. “Trips are pro-rated to the minute,” he said. At the moment, the only hub is at Sunset Pier on private property, but the app allows users to search for the nearest bike not in use. Sean said he has more hubs planned for Smathers Beach, Mel Fisher’s Museum, Sloppy Joe’s, Bourbon Street Pub, and Southernmost Point and is awaiting approval from the City of Key West. The bikes are even equipped with lights that turn on automatically for night riding. “The city manager had been directed with moving this and other bike share business forward,” said Key West Mayor Craig Cates. “I hope to see these businesses in operation very soon.” Sean said, “The long term advantage is it’s another transportation alternative for a congested area.” To learn more, visit intabikekeywest.com.

t’s hard to exactly pinpoint entertainer Amanda Palmer, simpler to check the box “all of the above.” Singer, songwriter, playwright, pianist, street performer, author and popular blogger, Palmer excels at being a Jack of all trades. She pushes her art into a weird and wonderful spectrum of creative performances and lifetime choices, all while engaging in a constant conversation with her fans via her blog, Tumblr, and Twitter (800,000-plus followers). Palmer loves direct connection with people. From humble beginnings as a street performer and singer, she explains the creative dialogue with her fans in her wildly popular 2013 Ted Talk. The talk has garnered more than 8 million online views and become the catalyst for her book, “The Art of Asking: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help.” Coming to the Studios’ theater on Tuesday, Dec. 13, Palmer will showcase her singing, songwrit-
ing and entertaining skills with fellow musicians Jason Webley and Jherek Bischoff. Following, she will have a book signing for her biography, “The Art Of Asking,” a New York Times bestseller. “I’ve never played a show in Key West before, and am so excited to be coming with a whole troupe of merry music-makers!” said Palmer, “It looks like we are rustling up an excellent local string quartet. Anytime you get me, Jason and Jherek on the same stage, it’s always a funny, magical night filled with stories and spontaneity. Then … skinny dipping?” Palmer’s husband is Neil Gaiman, whose notable works include the comic book series “The Sandman“ and novels “Stardust,“ “American Gods,“ “Coraline,” and “The Graveyard Book.” She teased: “Neil may appear to read a surprise.” Palmer’s illustrious career includes a long music career spanning three albums. “I am thrilled Amanda is coming,” said author Judy Blume. “She is a fabulous performer! n 18-year veteran of the Key West music scene, Alfonse Subarsky grew up on the Jersey shore in Belmar at 17th Avenue and B Street (just a few blocks from E Street of Bruce Springstein fame). At around age 12, Alfonse recalls seeing Ricky Nelson play guitar on the "Ozzie and Harriett" show and being mesmerized. It changed his life and that's when he started teaching himself how to play guitar. His earliest musical influence was Surf Music and songs like "Walk Don't Run" and "Wipeout." At age 17, Alfonse joined a band, and being the youngest member and still a minor, recalls having to get himself an underage license. He went on
to play with a popular New Jersey show band called "Party Dolls" that played all around the tri-state area. His first gig in Key West was in 1999 at Top of La Concha, which at the time was a Holiday Inn. From there Alfonse started playing all over town at spots like Captain Tony's and Rick's. For a while he played in a popular duo with Clint Bullard who is from Texas, and given Alfonse's Jewish heritage the duo was aptly named the
"Lone Star of David." These days Alfonse can be heard playing around town with "The Prime Movers" with Brian Roberts on bass, Rob DiStasi on keyboards, and Ray Spence on drums. You'll be able to hear The Prime Movers at the Mayor's Ball on Jan. 14, 2017. Alfonse also plays solo at Ricks on Thursdays at noon, Two Friends on Sunday morning from 8:30 -11:30 a.m., and Pier House Beach Bar on Saturdays at noon. Starting in January, he'll be at Mangoes for happy hour on Wednesdays. His full schedule can be found at www.conchrepublicmusic.com.

fter being laid off work in cold Ohio three years ago, Joe’s Tap Room Bartender Jordan Springer came to Key West to visit his parents and decided he would never leave. Shortly thereafter he started working in the back bar at Sloppy Joe’s. “I love working here,” he said. “We are a big family and we all love each other. I always enjoy coming into work because it’s always fun.” While on a late shift, he showed off some of the rums that were available like Papa’s Pilar, but made a traditional “Papa Dobles” with Bacardi rum. “It’s basically what Hemingway would have drank,” he said. The Papa Dobles is also made with grapefruit, sour mix and a splash of grenadine. He said their “awesome” fish dip goes great with the dobles, adding that it is made with mahi. When he isn’t bartending, he can be found doing “the Duval thing,” or hanging at Ft. Zachary Taylor or up the Keys at Bahia Honda. Joe’s Tap Room has a Greene Street entrance. Or guests can thread their way through Sloppy Joe’s to the back door.

ustrian diver Thomas Nemetz was out sailing when he had an epiphany. “Why don’t they have maps of the ocean floor?” he wondered. Previously, companies like Google attempted ocean mapping, but featured only general terrain charting, according to Paige Tyrell, marketing assistant of Ocean Maps. That was then, this is now. “Ocean Maps allows users to see color coordinated depth lines, hotspot with photos, toggle various views, read overall site descriptions, obtain temperature and visibility, and read about ocean life present,” said Tyrell. “Perhaps the coolest feature is Dive Mode, which virtually simulates the dive.” The app has four views: terrain, underwater, depth, and dive mode. Only a year old, the small Austrian-based company has charted 120 sites in the Red Sea, along with Attersee Lake in Austria and Kreidesee Lake in Germany, and now, the Florida Keys. Starting in September, the Ocean Maps team mapped 70 sites in the Keys, including Hens and Chickens, Alligator Reef, Sand Key, Spiegel Grove, the Christ of the Abyss, Duane and Bibb. On the app, simulation dives like the Tortugas and Sand Key are free with the download, while others need to be purchased. So far the company has a handful of downloads for different locations, but plan on merging them on to one platform. Their exploration team spent 10 hours a day, for three weeks, canvasing sites and collecting data in the Keys. The team used side scan sonar and remote operated

vehicles to gather information. They dove, took pictures and captured data on sites from Key Largo to Key West to build the 3-D models. “Right now divers rely on memory or hand drawn maps. Our app gives you actual geographic data that is to scale,” said Tyrell. “We hope to increase safety by making the experience less overwhelming. If you have some idea of what you’ll encounter, it’ll be easier to orient yourself once you’re in.” The next features Ocean Maps plans to introduce are a customizable route feature, and a virtual community to shares photos, hotspots, and custom routes with other users. Custom routes allow users to make their own tracks or remap wrecks if a storm reorients the site, for example. Ocean Maps debuted the product at the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) event in Las Vegas this past November. That was where Capt. Tuck Hall, of Ocean Divers in Key Largo, first stumbled across the booth and saw possibilities in the new technology.

KEY WEST WEEKLY / DECEMBER 9, 2016 The Key West Weekly is proud to partner with Key West High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and KWHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Conch Pride” and congratulate all of the outstanding students of the week.
MELANIE ALVAREZ SENIOR
What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am a part of the Key West High School Marching Conchs, NHS, GSA, and Mu Alpha Theta. All of these reflect something I care about, and I get to work with others to reach our goals. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Elizabeth Ford, for being the truest, most neutral and aligned person I have ever met. She keeps her mind open and caffeinated. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP Government is the most important. Because after the finals of this election it helped me understand what went on. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? Tumblr, for keeping up with art blogs and web comics. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The loss of native plant habitats due to construction and/or invasive species is a problem. It’s important to educate people about these issues so they don’t keep coddling a species that could result in an unfortunate domino effect. What are your plans after high school? I hope to get into MIT, or one of my other college choices. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Maybe, when I retire. The weather is nice here, and it’s relatively safe. It’s just really expensive for raising kids. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … that there is nothing more important in growing up than interacting with people different than yourself.

HE’S BACK (Editor’s note: Following is an excerpt from the Keys Weekly interview with Edwin McCain. To see the full story, visit keysweekly.com.)
Edwin McCain to perform in Key West. Again.
BRITT MYERS
britt@keysweekly.com
T
he Key West Theater was in the infant stages of booking larger acts when Edwin McCain took the stage in late December of last year. It was during that show, after a fervent crowd stood and demanded an encore, that McCain returned to the stage and performed a gripping rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” When the curtain closed, a speechless mass was reminded of why McCain was one of the most celebrated singer songwriters on the globe during the 1990’s. Now, McCain returns to the Key West Theater on Sunday, Dec. 18 in what has already become one of the most anticipated encores to the 2016 season. KW: Thanks for allowing us to interview you again. So what are you doing right now? EM: Right now? I just got finished loading my forestry mulcher onto my truck. People have a lot of hunting property and do a lot of game management around where I am. KW: Wait, are you telling me someone can just pick up the phone and ask Edwin McCain to come over and clear a field? EM: [Laughing] My company is called Nomad Land Management. I love being outside and I love improving land for wildlife and for people.
KW: People still talk about your last performance in Key West, in particular the mindblowing version of Lenard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Can we expect something like that again? EM: Honestly, in that night and in that version — I had only learned the song a couple days before and for some reason I made some choices at the end I had never made before. The spirit moved me. And that night still sticks out in my mind. KW: What can we expect from your upcoming show? EM: It’s me and the guys again. I’ll probably use a core group of songs that are mandatory but I’ll work some newer songs in again. KW: What have you been working on of late? EM: I’m doing three new songs at a time. I’m trying to do them every four months or so. I feel like the attention span for albums are kind of gone. For me it’s just a way to jump around from genre to genre and from production style to production style — instead of taking 10 songs and trying to cram them into a box.

FKCC’s United Flag Football Team wins silver at Special Olympics HAYS BLINCKMANN

ey West is known for a lot of great firsts, and this one is no exception. Florida Keys Community College is the first Florida community college to have a Special Olympics flag football team. In their inaugural year, the United Flag Football team has already been crowned champions. The team, thanks to a group of dedicated athletes and student partners, brought home silver medals in November from the Fall Classic State Tournament in Orlando. “The athletes are so caring and I felt like they really looked up to me, when little do they know, I looked up to them,” said Gaby Torelli,19, criminal justice major and partner to the team. “Our athletes got so much better from day one and never gave up which is all I could ever ask from anyone that’s on my team.” Gaby Torelli was awarded a gold medal for Inspirational Partner of the Year at the games and it’s easy to see why. As a natural athlete, Torelli sought out the position on the team with willingness to give her time, heart and energy to something worthwhile. On the field, the team consists of two partners aiding and assisting three athletes; but it requires much more than tossing the ball around. The team practiced every Wednesday for two hours, scrimmaged with Key West High, and due to a Miami tournament cancellation,
“We really took the Special Olympics inspirational quote of ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt’ to its full meaning.” — Gaby Torelli
headed to Orlando having never really played another team. “We had to make quite a few stops to see to everyone’s comfort,” said Torelli, adding the trip to Orlando took them twice as long. But the diligence and love paid off from watching the Olympic Torch be lit, suffering the agony of defeat with smiles and a dance party with Mickey and Minnie thrown by Disney hosts. “The funniest part was slipping and sliding on the wet field during the game we lost,” said FKCC student and partner, DJ Smith, 18, a marine engineering major. “But everyone was still just so happy.” Smith, like Torelli, sought out the volunteer opportunity having worked with special needs kids in his home state of New York and is eager to do it again next year. “We work so well together and created a really close bond in a short time, I wish it could of lasted all year,” said Torelli.

C
ontrary to the title, it is not only a play, not by any means. The Waterfront Playhouse is opening its 2016/17 season with Terrance McNally’s “It’s Only A Play” — a biting, outrageous and farcical comedy about the theater itself. The play debuted off Broadway in the mid ’80s, but in 2014 playwright McNally updated and modernized it for Broadway, and since, it has been nominated for a Tony and Drama Desk Award in 2015. Whether in Key West or in New York, McNally, 78, hasn’t slowed his distinguished theater career. Taking a break from his newest play “Anastasia,” set to open on Broadway in May, McNally has nothing but praise for the Waterfront Playhouse and hopes to make opening night for “It’s Only A Play.” “Murphy Davis is an excellent director, and there is such a strong acting pool in Key West,” said McNally, expressing great confidence the Playhouse’s acting troupe. “They are the créme de la créme.” The Broadway version starred acting greats such as Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Stockard Channing, hard acts to follow. But that’s the point of the play: theater is hard but everyone has the will to succeed. The play is set on a fictitious opening night and draws humor from the mayhem and delusions of “theater people” waiting for the critics’ reviews.
“Nathan Lane was the main impetus for the revival because so much has changed in the way we communicate,” said McNally, fourtime Tony award winner. “No longer do we wait for the New York Times to publish a review — everything is online. The power of the critics has been diminished by social media. Now everyone is a critic.” According to McNally, 50 percent of the play was rewritten and he “had a ball doing the rewrite.” The dialogue has been updated to include jokes about social media, movie stars and critics relevant today. Whether throwing shade on the Hollywood A-listers or mainstream media, the play blows up modern day narcissism and entertains the inner cynic in all of us. “The play isn’t based on anyone in particular, its a composite of theater egos,” said McNally. “Initially the play was inspired by my own first rejections. I wrote it with great affection, a love letter to the theater.”

n Saturday, Dec. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Old Island Restoration Foundation and Key West Collegiate Academy will host the 10th annual community gingerbread housemaking party in the garden of The Oldest House at 322 Duval St. in Key West. Kids of all ages are invited to attend this fun and free event. Each person attending is encouraged to bring edible items for house (or car or boat or entire town) building and decorations, like gumdrops, candy canes or cookies to share. There will be tables full of house building and decorating supplies to create any gingerbread creation imaginable. Everyone attending will take their gingerbread creations home for a festive addition to holiday celebrations. Necco wafers make great roof tiles, and shredded wheat cereal can make a thatched roof. Shredded coconut can be used for snow, marshmallows for snowmen, sugar cones for trees, and candies of all sorts for, well, all sorts of things. Music and light refreshments will also be provided. The Oldest House is located on Duval Street, between Eaton and Caroline Streets. This special holiday event is a gift to the community from The Smith Law Firm. Many other community businesses and individuals have also generously contributed. All funds raised for this event will be contributed to the Key West Collegiate Academy to support its programs and to the Old Island Restoration Foundation.

‘Burnpile’ is set sizzles with Play in the Florida eccentrics panhandle
O
scar-nominated screenwriter Lucy Alibar’s newest play, “Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up” premieres at the Key West Theater on Friday, Dec. 16. TheaterMania calls the 85-minute show a “a master class in the marriage of performance and narrative.” This new original play blends a lecherous goat, a treacherous burnpile, Pentecostals on the radio, a clutter of inbred cats, phone calls from death row, and countless other rich ingredients into a delicious and magical stew set in the Florida panhandle. Zachary Fine, last seen on Broadway in David Mamet’s 2015 play “China Doll,” with Al Pacino, directs “Burnpile,” which stars Equity actress Dakota Mackey-McGee in a tour-de-force performance. This will be the East Coast premiere of the production and the first time it has been performed by an actress other than playwright Alibar. The play is also currently being developed as a pilot for FX. The Los Angeles Times says: “Southern writers have a distinct advantage over their Northern counterparts. The South, as William Faulkner, Carson McCullers and Flannery O’Connor have depicted it, is so rife with flaming eccentrics that a mere trip to the grocery store can yield a flourishing crop of prize anecdotes … In ‘Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up,’ [playwright] Lucy Alibar relates vignettes from her

childhood living in an exotically chaotic house on a watermelon field in the Florida Panhandle. The daughter of an attorney who defends, pro-bono, murderers who have no one else to stand up for them, she becomes his occasional secretary while still in elementary school. This is about as unsentimental an education as a fourthgrader can get. Alibar’s approach, however, is delicately wistful. The piece is really a love letter to her iconoclastic, democratically principled dad, written though the eyes of girl endowed with an adult author’s retrospective emotion.” “Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up” by Lucy Alibar, starring Dakota Mackey-McGee opens at the newly renovated Key West Theater at 512 Eaton St. in Old Town on Friday, Dec. 16 and runs through Jan. 14, 2017. Opening night tickets include an invitation to the exclusive postshow party with the cast, director, and more. For tickets, visit www. thekeywesttheater.com, or call 305-985-0433. — Contributed
Steve Martin’s ‘Picasso’ opens at Red Barn
“P
icasso” will have its Key West five-week debut run at the Red Barn Theatre beginning Tuesday, Dec. 13. The play stars a blend of local favorites and talented newcomers, including Mark Crow, Eric Braojos, Pony Charvet, Wayne Dapser, Erin McKenna, Lisa Elena Monda, Mook J, Bob Smith, and Garrett Stuart. It will be directed by Joy Hawkins. Steve Martin is a revered master at comedy. So when Martin tried his master’s hand at a stage play, he went with what he knows best, comedy. “Picasso” has a marvelous set-up followed by a hilarious payoff. Actually, an almost never-ending series of payoffs – in terms of giggles. It’s the winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play for being not only hysterical, but also intelligent and thought-provoking. So what’s Martin’s comedic set-up in “Picasso”? On a night in 1904 in Paris, Albert Einstein, then 25-years-old and just months away from formulating his seminal “Special Theory of Rela-
tivity,” wanders into the Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), a real Paris watering hole that catered to painters, writers, and other eccentrics who were giving direction to the new century’s avant-garde. And who should he run into? None other than the 23-yearold Pablo Picasso who was not far from his own seminal brilliance with his painting, “Les Demoiselles D’Avignon.” Martin paints the scene with eccentric supporting characters: the dry owner of the establishment, the bar’s waitress (and the owner’s mistress), a beautiful woman who has come to meet Picasso, an elderly neighborhood philosopher with prostate problems, Picasso’s hustling agent who has very odd ideas about art, and an inventor with huge ideas and little talent. And then comes the payoff: While the two main characters vie for the attention of the beautiful woman and for each other’s respect as shapers of the new world, and the rest of the characters toss in their own funny, whimsical, absurd, goofy (pick one or all) world views, a huge battle of ideas about art, science, lust, and the future of the world erupts, with laughs ranging from a giggle to a gut-busting guffaw. For tickets or more information, visit redbarntheatre.com or call the box office at 305-296-9911. All curtains open at 8 p.m. Ticket holders for opening night on Tuesday, Dec. 13 will be invited to join the cast and crew at the after-party catered by Croissants de France in the Zabar Courtyard at the Red Barn. —Contributed

THE GIFT OF SELF These organizations need holiday help VALERIE KOLESSAR
I
www.keysweekly.com
t’s the most, wonderful time of the year, right? Sadly, not for everyone. The magic of Christmas is nothing more than a bitter memory for those whose circumstances are less fortunate than ours. The elderly, infirm in nursing homes far away from family. The homeless. The sick. The lonely. And the list goes on. Why not share some of your holiday cheer with them? Embrace the true spirit of the season by contributing time, talent, or gifts to those in need. Yours may be the only smile they see this Christmas. • The staff at Mariners Hospital in the Upper Keys makes every effort to get patients home for the holidays, and recognize home is where the greatest need exists. Several social agencies offer services for the homebound and their caregivers. And they can all use extra hands this time of the year. Visit an hour with a homebound person to allow a caregiver to squeeze in a little shopping of their own. Deliver food to someone who would otherwise go hungry. Offer support to families facing the loss of a loved one. With locations throughout the Keys, your closest Visiting Nurse’s Association, Hospice, Meals on Wheels or Center for Independent Living is only a phone call away. It may be the most important call you make this season of giving. • Key West Rehabilitation Center distributes holiday gifts to those who call the facility home. The greatest need this year is lotion for the women, cologne for the men, and blankets for everyone. Or share your talents with the residents as a group by leading a holiday sing-a-long. Call Sara at 305-296-4888 to make arrangements. • Keys Area Interdenominational Resources, best known as KAIR, has been serving Marathon’s needy since 1998. They work in partnership with other agencies and organizations to help return people to productive lives. In 2012, they began overseeing Independence Cay to extend their services to the area’s homeless. They accept donations of every type – time, cash, food, clothing, in-kind donations – they can use whatever you have to offer. A wish list and methods of donating are detailed on their website at KairOnline.net. • Folks at Marathon’s DAV Chapter 122 assemble packages for community members deployed on active military duty both stateside and overseas. A donation box is located on their premises during normal operating hours beginning at 10 a.m. Items most needed are clothing, dehydrated food like jerky, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toothpicks, music CDs, and movie videos. Local disabled vets can use a little help, too. Donations of money or gift cards can brighten the day of someone feeling lost and forgotten. The Chapter collects those, too. Some of you may be reading this and think, sounds great but I’m already stretched out. No worries! Need exists all year long, not just during the holidays. Charity has no season. Your gift is appreciated no matter when it arrives.

E
very year the Wesley House’s annual toy drive provides hundreds of Keys kids much needed presents under the tree — but it’s not just about the toys, it’s about the families. There is specific reason the toys are unwrapped. Each year, the Wesley house opens up a “shop” for one day and parents are allowed to come in and hand pick the unique gift, that one of kind thing that is just right for their child. The experience is personalized so families can feel good about what’s under the tree and have a true Christmas. Holiday Helpers of the Florida Keys Families accepts referred families in need for the program. To refer a family that may need assistance, call Wesley House, KWPD, Monroe County Sheriff’s Dept., Kids Come First, Monroe County School District, Healthy Start, ELC, Salvation Army, Samuel’s House, and Upper Keys YMCA program. Another way to give is to “adopt” a whole family and provide anything from presents to food during the holidays. The “shops” will take place Saturday, Dec. 17 in Key West, Sunday, Dec. 18 in Marathon, and Thursday, Dec. 22 in Key Largo. All organizations will be accepting referrals and unwrapped toys up until then so … give, give, give.
Drop off your unwrapped toys at any Holiday Helper location
