Middle Keys hosts two boat parades The Keys have the best floating holiday parades. The community comes out to watch, the captains go all out, and no two boats are alike. The Middle Keys are lucky enough to have two. The first is the Boot Key Harbor Christmas Boat Parade on Saturday, Dec. 10 at sunset. The parade starts at the West Channel entrance to the harbor and goes past Sombrero Boatman’s Resort and Dockside Tropical Café. Best viewing spots are Dockside, Lazy Days, Marathon Marina, Pancho’s, Burdines, etc. The second is the Key Colony Beach Boat Parade on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. The best viewing is from the dock at city hall or along the Sadowski Causeway (or a private party!)

When the final slice of pumpkin pie has been consumed, and the Black Friday shoppers have spent their last dime, that’s the signal to cue up the Christmas music. Roasting chestnuts over an open fire, while listening to Frank Sinatra’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with your sweetie is what the holidays are all about. There are a few songs, however, that after a few decades of listening to over and over, have lost their luster. Holiday DJs, listen up; the Weekly asked locals …
What song could you do without this holiday season? “’Silent Night,’” said Alex Johnson of Sunset Grille and Raw Bar. Alex is about to welcome his first child into the world, so those silent nights are all but over. Sorry, Alex.

Student: City needs a pool
Outshined
On Aug. 30, the city of Marathon voted on a referendum. With 866 votes for yes, and 861 votes for no, Marathon expressed an interest in researching the construction and maintenance of a community pool. As a member of the Marathon High School swim team, a youth, and a citizen of Marathon, I strongly support and encourage my community to consider the construction of a community pool. Although at the moment it is hard to tell what the expenses for a community pool will be and how these expenses will affect our community, it’s clear that a pool would benefit the city of Marathon in intergenerational ways and serve multiple population groups. During its season, the Marathon High School swim team drives or is bussed to Founders Park in Islamorada every weekday. This 100-minute daily round trip demands funds from MHS, the swim team, and sometimes even parents. The addition of a community pool in Marathon would not only eliminate this drive, but would also provide the opportunity for our swim team to host swim meets. Swim meets at a public pool in Marathon would add an exciting event for the community to engage in and would also embed a stronger sense of community and school spirit in the members of the swim team. Living on this island, it is critical that the children of Marathon can swim. In a location where boating, fishing, snorkeling, and other ocean-related activities are popular pastimes, a child who cannot swim not only misses out on many unique experiences but also is at risk every time they step out on a dock or a boat. The community pool would provide opportunities for group swim lessons where children would be given instruction. Not only would our city benefit from the swim lessons which would be provided at the school, but also from the new recreational area provided. Families with young children, teens looking for new activities, and the elderly seeking relaxation would all have the opportunity to gather together at the community pool. With the research into the construction and maintenance of a community pool beginning, I hope that the community of Marathon will see the many possibilities and advantages that a community pool provides.
For many years we rented some very expensive and horrible street decorations that were hung in the city of Marathon down U.S.1. The decision was made that we would begin to buy our own, a little each year. Those ended up being in the City's Community Park. Many people do not go to the park unless there is some type of an event. I don't. For years, the most beautiful lights have been at San Pablo Catholic Church’s garden. It is simply breathtaking and goes forever. This year, solar lights were purchased that run down the middle of the road near the airport. Unfortunately if a car’s headlights approach that section you cannot see those lights. You must get out of your car and stand at the side of the road and wait until there is no traffic to get the full effect. So after almost four years we have lights that cannot be hung, so they are displayed in park and we have lights in the middle of the road that can't be seen at night when there's traffic! My suggestion to the Council is to get in their cars and go at night to Key Largo or Big Pine and see their beautiful holiday decorations instead of trying something new like solar lights. I think it's ridiculous to use an excuse that we don't have the money to purchase decorations while the rest of the Keys outshine us! Especially when we let 60,000 to 80,000 tourists trash our city for mini lobster season. Unless I misread this, the City Council has donated $40,000 in transfer fees to the Domestic Abuse Shelter for "financial hardship." The Council is in hopes that each local business will decorate their own storefront so it won't be necessary for the City to decorate for the holiday season.

BOCC accepts affordable housing recommendations
KEYS ANIMAL HOSPITAL
T
he Monroe County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting Tuesday in Marathon to focus on the affordable/ workforce housing shortage in the land-limited County. The BOCC was presented with 33 recommendations established by a 14-member Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) that also included Commissioner Sylvia Murphy and Commissioner Heather Carruthers. The Committee was established by County ordinance in 2015 and met monthly for a year. The BOCC approved or supported most of the 33 recommendations, which addressed financing, monitoring, illegal rentals, community outreach and the County’s unique dilemma of having limited affordable allocation units to provide to builders under state mandate. While the BOCC commissioners agreed that trying to “solve” the complex problem would take a concerted community wide effort, Commissioner Carruthers said: “We did make progress.” Among the recommendations that the BOCC approved or supported: · Amend the definition of workforce housing in the Land Development Code to mean individuals or families who derive at least 70 percent of their income from work done in Monroe County or who are gainfully employed supplying goods and or services to county residents and visitors. · Continue the inclusionary housing study for non-residential development to supply affordable housing for the employees it needs to operate · Direct staff to review legal, financial and legislative issues on the development of a property tax incentive for homeowners who rent a lawfully established existing market rate unit to a member of the workforce within the very low, low and median affordable housing income limits and rental rates. While many places have problems with affordable housing, Monroe County has the unique challenge of its geography and environment. The state limits growth in Monroe County because the island chain has been designated an Area of Critical State Concern. The County only has 692 affordable allocations remaining. Already in the pipeline are more than 15 projects whose developers have applied for or have indicated they will apply for affordable allocation units. If all the projects in the pipeline are developed, only 162 affordable allocations would be left, said Mayte Santamaria, Monroe County Director of Planning and Environmental Resources. “There are no easy solutions,” Santamaria said. “The Board took time today to review, debate and listen to the community on various strategies and incentives. The Board then directed staff to move forward with the ones they think could provide more affordable housing in the Keys.” — Contributed

District surveys on school start times In response to parents’ concerns, School Board members have proposed that the district conduct a survey to get input on school start times. It is important that parents complete the survey to express their thoughts on this important topic. Only one survey is needed even if you have children in more than one school. The survey will direct you to questions regarding both schools. The preferred method is to take the survey online; however, paper and pencil versions of the survey will be available at your child’s school as well. The online version is available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. If you are unable to complete the survey at home, you may go to the Parent Education Center at each school to complete the survey on a computer or you can complete a paper and pencil version as stated above. School staff will advise you how to complete the paper and pencil version. The deadline for completing the survey is Tuesday, Dec. 22. The survey link is http://surveys.hanoverresearch.com/s3/School-Start-Times-Survey. —Contributed

MarineLab to host microplastic awareness seminar
Space still available for youth basketball program
As a member of the Florida Microplastic Awareness Project, MarineLab is offering a community outreach educational event on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. It will be at the MarineLab facility located at 51 Shoreland Drive in Key Largo, MM 103.2 oceanside . Participants will learn about the impact that microplastic has on the ocean and the adverse effect on the plankton, fish and shellfish that may eat them or take them in over their gills. Participants are encouraged to bring a one-liter sample of canal or nearby water to examine for evidence of microplastics. The seminar will also cover microplastics in common household toiletries and other items. A small $5 donation is suggested to help offset the cost of the materials consumed in the lab. Call MarineLab at 305-451-1139 to sign up.
Youth between the ages of 6-14 may still register for youth basketball with the City of Marathon Parks and Recreation department. The cost is $50. Registration forms may be obtained by calling the park office at 305-743-6598 or by going to the city website and downloading a registration form. ey West is known for a lot of great firsts, and this one is no exception. Florida Keys Community College is the first Florida community college to have a Special Olympics flag football team. In their inaugural year, the United Flag Football team has already been crowned champions. The team, thanks to a group of dedicated athletes and student partners, brought home silver medals in November from the Fall Classic State Tournament in Orlando. “The athletes are so caring and I felt like they really looked up to me, when little do they know, I looked up to them,” said Gaby Torelli,19, criminal justice major and partner to the team. “Our athletes got so much better from day one

and never gave up which is all I could ever ask from anyone that’s on my team.” Gaby Torelli was awarded a gold medal for Inspirational Partner of the Year at the games and it’s easy to see why. As a natural athlete, Torelli sought out the position on the team with willingness to give her time, heart and energy to something worthwhile. On the

field, the team consists of two partners aiding and assisting three athletes; but it requires much more than tossing the ball around. The team practiced every Wednesday for two hours, scrimmaged with Key West High, and due to a Miami tournament cancellation, headed to Orlando having never really played another team. “We had to make quite a few stops to see to everyone’s comfort,” said Torelli, adding the trip to Orlando took them twice as long. But the diligence and love paid off from watching the Olympic Torch be lit, suffering the agony of defeat with smiles and a dance party with Mickey and Minnie thrown by Disney hosts. “The funniest part was slipping and sliding on the wet field during the game we lost,” said FKCC student and partner, DJ Smith, 18, a marine engineering major. “But everyone was still just so happy.” Smith, like Torelli, sought out the volunteer opportunity having worked with special needs kids in his home state of New York and is eager to do it again next year. “We work so well together and created a really close bond in a short time, I wish it could of lasted all year,” said Torelli.
The choir will perform ‘Born a Saviour, Born a King.’
The Lower Keys Community Choir and Keys Chamber Orchestra will be performing “Born a Saviour, Born a King,” written by John Purifoy in a four-series concert throughout the Middle and Lower Keys. The all-volunteer choirs are providing the freewill donation performances to raise money for local high school music departments and scholarships. The performance schedule is as follows: • Monday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Big Pine Methodist Church; • Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Peter Catholic Church on Big Pine Key; • Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Venture Out on Cudjoe Key; • Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at the San Pablo Catholic Church in Marathon. — Contributed

Run & Drink Runners from the inaugural Islamorada Half Marathon and 10K line up, anxiously awaiting the start of the race.
Beach and Beer Mile precedes half marathon GABRIEL SANCHEZ

T
he second annual Islamorada Half Marathon and 10K is set for Sunday, Dec. 11, at 7 a.m. But the lesser known “Beach and Beer Mile,” may end up stealing the show among thirsty athletes. The Beer Mile, which places four beer stations throughout a mile course, is set for Saturday, Dec. 10 at noon. his year, roughly 1,000 runners will represent 40 different states and a few countries throughout all the races. Race founders, and Coral Shores alumni, Robbie McClung and Eli Bailin, organized the Beach and Beer Mile with the intention of adding something fun for locals to precede Islamorada’s premier destination running event. “The half marathon and 10K is for more serious runners, so the Beach and Beer mile will be a fun departure from the usual race environment,” said Bailin. “It’s for locals, friends, or family, who came to root on their loved ones, but
T
want to get in on the action.” Registration-packet pickup for Sunday’s half marathon and 10K will be at Florida Keys Brewing Co. on Friday, Dec. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. Late race entries can also register that evening or the following morning at 10 a.m. at the Islander, a Guy Harvey Outpost. Space is limited, so hasty registration is encouraged. The Beer Mile kicks off the weekend races from the beachfront of the Islander Resort. The first wave of competitive runners departs the starting line at noon followed by a wave of social runners at 12:30 p.m. Each beer station will be serving easy-drinking beer along with water and Gatorade. “Were happy to take a real popular event like the Beer Mile, and put a Keys twist on it,” said McClung. Entry is $35 for the Beer Mile, but locals can show their IDs at registration for a $10 discount. All participants receive a complimentary t-shirt. Visit Islamoaradahalfmarathon. com to register, or visit Florida Keys Brewing Co. in the Islamorada Arts and Culture District.

Everdew water made in the Keys
atching water vapor straight from Florida Keys’ skies, Everdew water can’t get any more pure, or any more homegrown. Founders Maria Ershova and Duane Orridge, Big Pine Key residents for the past four years, came up with the idea brainstorming using their business and engineering backgrounds. “There isn’t a lot of manufacturing down here, so we are pretty lucky to produce here,” said Orridge. The two traveled the world before settling in the Keys, surmising that this climate was most perfect for water production. “Compared to other bottled water brands on the market, Everdew is proud that it originates from the cleanest eco-source of water available in the world — the sky” said Ershova, who lives an active lifestyle and knows hydration is essential to her wellbeing. “No chloride, fluoride, or sodium makes any appearance in our water.” According to the business partners, most bottle water comes from the ground or the faucet. Everdew’s water making process is simple – warm, humid air and a cool, clean environment. Water is pulled from the moisture in the environment; its by-product is fresh air. “The Keys are perfect for this — a Caribbean climate, clear skies and sweeping sunsets — the best ingredients for our water,” said Ershova.
Everdew is a locally sourced water for an active lifestyle.
Using the water vapor as its main ingredient, Everdew bottled water is made in Big Pine Key and sold around the world.
• In Key West: Date and Thyme, Eaton Street Seafood Market, Mellow Ventures, Key West Bait and Tackle, Bad Boy Burrito, Fausto’s on Fleming, Sugar Apple, Shatki Yoga, Casa Marina, Glazed Doughnuts, and a few convenience stores. • In the Lower Keys: Baby’s Coffee, Good Food Conspiracy, Cone Republic, and Shell gas stations on Summerland, Ramrod and Big Pine Key, • In Marathon: Food for Thought and Curley’s Coffee. • In the Upper Keys: Islamorada Brewing Company and Hilton Hotel in Key Largo.
Everdew has crucial electrolytes and essential minerals added. “We stay healthy when our cells are mineralized well and oxygenated,” Ershova said. Jenny Sullivan, owner of Cone Republic, an ice cream food truck located in Big Pine Key, sells Everdew at her shop. “It perfectly complements the holistic, local lifestyle I promote here,” she said, offering compotes and toppings made from organic fruits grown down the street at Grimal Grove. “Local is best.” “We want to start a trend where people look at where their water is from, and the quality,” said Orridge. “We have a great local following, which is really cool.” More information on the product, visit drinkeverdew.com

HE’S BACK (Editor’s note: Following is an excerpt from the Keys Weekly interview with Edwin McCain. To see the full story, visit keysweekly.com.)
Edwin McCain to perform in Key West. Again.
BRITT MYERS
britt@keysweekly.com
T
he Key West Theater was in the infant stages of booking larger acts when Edwin McCain took the stage in late December of last year. It was during that show, after a fervent crowd stood and demanded an encore, that McCain returned to the stage and performed a gripping rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” When the curtain closed, a speechless mass was reminded of why McCain was one of the most celebrated singer songwriters on the globe during the 1990’s. Now, McCain returns to the Key West Theater on Sunday, Dec. 18 in what has already become one of the most anticipated encores to the 2016 season. KW: Thanks for allowing us to interview you again. So what are you doing right now? EM: Right now? I just got finished loading my forestry mulcher onto my truck. People have a lot of hunting property and do a lot of game management around where I am. KW: Wait, are you telling me someone can just pick up the phone and ask Edwin McCain to come over and clear a field? EM: [Laughing] My company is called Nomad Land Management. I love being outside and I love improving land for wildlife and for people.
KW: People still talk about your last performance in Key West, in particular the mindblowing version of Lenard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Can we expect something like that again? EM: Honestly, in that night and in that version — I had only learned the song a couple days before and for some reason I made some choices at the end I had never made before. The spirit moved me. And that night still sticks out in my mind. KW: What can we expect from your upcoming show? EM: It’s me and the guys again. I’ll probably use a core group of songs that are mandatory but I’ll work some newer songs in again. KW: What have you been working on of late? EM: I’m doing three new songs at a time. I’m trying to do them every four months or so. I feel like the attention span for albums are kind of gone. For me it’s just a way to jump around from genre to genre and from production style to production style — instead of taking 10 songs and trying to cram them into a box.

The remote operated vehicle, or dive robot, aids Ocean Maps in charting dive sites with accurate underwater topographical data.
See under the Sea New app charts Keys’ underwater terrain GABRIEL SANCHEZ
gabriel@keysweekly.com
A
ustrian diver Thomas Nemetz was out sailing when he had an epiphany. “Why don’t they have maps of the ocean floor?” he wondered. Previously, companies like Google attempted ocean mapping, but featured only general terrain charting, according to Paige Tyrell, marketing assistant of Ocean Maps. That was then, this is now. “Ocean Maps allows users to see color coordinated depth lines, hotspot with photos, toggle various views, read overall site descriptions, obtain temperature and visibility, and read about ocean life present,” said Tyrell. “Perhaps the coolest feature is Dive Mode, which virtually simulates the dive.” The app has four views: terrain, underwater, depth, and dive mode. Only a year old, the small Austrian-based company has charted 120 sites in the Red Sea, along with Attersee Lake in Austria and Kreidesee Lake in Germany, and now, the Florida Keys. Starting in September, the Ocean Maps team mapped 70 sites in the Keys, including Hens and Chickens, Alligator Reef, Sand Key, Spiegel Grove, the Christ of the Abyss, Duane and Bibb. On the app, simulation dives like the Tortugas and Sand Key are free with the download, while others need to be purchased. So far the company has a handful of downloads for different locations, but plan on merging them on to one platform. Their exploration team spent 10 hours a day, for three weeks, canvasing sites and collecting data in the Keys. The team used side scan sonar and remote operated
vehicles to gather information. They dove, took pictures and captured data on sites from Key Largo to Key West to build the 3-D models. “Right now divers rely on memory or hand drawn maps. Our app gives you actual geographic data that is to scale,” said Tyrell. “We hope to increase safety by making the experience less overwhelming. If you have some idea of what you’ll encounter, it’ll be easier to orient yourself once you’re in.” The next features Ocean Maps plans to introduce are a customizable route feature, and a virtual community to shares photos, hotspots, and custom routes with other users. Custom routes allow users to make their own tracks or remap wrecks if a storm reorients the site, for example. Ocean Maps debuted the product at the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) event in Las Vegas this past November. That was where Capt. Tuck Hall, of Ocean Divers in Key Largo, first stumbled across the booth and saw possibilities in the new technology. “I think there’s lot of potential there. The map of the wrecks were pretty well done and I think as a tool for briefing dives it holds promise,” said Capt. Hall. However, Hall says the app still has a little more to go before it becomes a necessity. “The reef maps and resolution are not as polished as the wrecks, and the description and positional accuracy of wrecks needs a little adjustment.” Ocean Maps is available on both Google Play and the iTunes store for free, and is seeking more feedback from locals.

MARATHON WEEKLY / DECEMBER 9, 2016
THE GIFT OF SELF These organizations need holiday help VALERIE KOLESSAR
I
www.keysweekly.com
t’s the most, wonderful time of the year, right? Sadly, not for everyone. The magic of Christmas is nothing more than a bitter memory for those whose circumstances are less fortunate than ours. The elderly, infirm in nursing homes far away from family. The homeless. The sick. The lonely. And the list goes on. Why not share some of your holiday cheer with them? Embrace the true spirit of the season by contributing time, talent, or gifts to those in need. Yours may be the only smile they see this Christmas. • The staff at Mariners Hospital in the Upper Keys makes every effort to get patients home for the holidays, and recognize home is where the greatest need exists. Several social agencies offer services for the homebound and their caregivers. And they can all use extra hands this time of the year. Visit an hour with a homebound person to allow a caregiver to squeeze in a little shopping of their own. Deliver food to someone who would otherwise go hungry. Offer support to families facing the loss of a loved one. With locations throughout the Keys, your closest Visiting Nurse’s Association, Hospice, Meals on Wheels or Center for Independent Living is only a phone call away. It may be the most important call you make this season of giving. • Key West Rehabilitation Center distributes holiday gifts to those who call the facility home. The greatest need this year is lotion for the women, cologne for the men, and blankets for everyone. Or share your talents with the residents as a group by leading a holiday sing-a-long. Call Sara at 305-296-4888 to make arrangements. • Keys Area Interdenominational Resources, best known as KAIR, has been serving Marathon’s needy since 1998. They work in partnership with other agencies and organizations to help return people to productive lives. In 2012, they began overseeing Independence Cay to extend their services to the area’s homeless. They accept donations of every type – time, cash, food, clothing, in-kind donations – they can use whatever you have to offer. A wish list and methods of donating are detailed on their website at KairOnline.net. • Folks at Marathon’s DAV Chapter 122 assemble packages for community members deployed on active military duty both stateside and overseas. A donation box is located on their premises during normal operating hours beginning at 10 a.m. Items most needed are clothing, dehydrated food like jerky, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toothpicks, music CDs, and movie videos. Local disabled vets can use a little help, too. Donations of money or gift cards can brighten the day of someone feeling lost and forgotten. The Chapter collects those, too. Some of you may be reading this and think, sounds great but I’m already stretched out. No worries! Need exists all year long, not just during the holidays. Charity has no season. Your gift is appreciated no matter when it arrives.
Holiday Helpers of the Florida Keys Tis’ the Season to Give HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
E
very year the Wesley House’s annual toy drive provides hundreds of Keys kids much needed presents under the tree — but it’s not just about the toys, it’s about the families. There is specific reason the toys are unwrapped. Each year, the Wesley house opens up a “shop” for one day and parents are allowed to come in and hand pick the unique gift, that one of kind thing that is just right for their child. The experience is personalized so families can feel good about what’s under the tree and have a true Christmas. Holiday Helpers of the Florida Keys Families accepts referred families in need for the program. To refer a family that may need assistance, call Wesley House, KWPD, Monroe County Sheriff’s Dept., Kids Come First, Monroe County School District, Healthy Start, ELC, Salvation Army, Samuel’s House, and Upper Keys YMCA program. Another way to give is to “adopt” a whole family and provide anything from presents to food during the holidays. The “shops” will take place Saturday, Dec. 17 in Key West, Sunday, Dec. 18 in Marathon, and Thursday, Dec. 22 in Key Largo. All organizations will be accepting referrals and unwrapped toys up until then so … give, give, give.
Drop off your unwrapped toys at any Holiday Helper location

drive a white Ford E-150 cargo van. It’s not flashy, it’s not sporty; it does manage, however, to get me and my stuff around from place to place. It’s not a pinnacle of European engineering; neither is it a speed machine destined for the racetrack. It’s just a basic American vehicle, solid American steel, the likes of which we were so used to seeing on our roadways. So why is it, you may ask, that I’ve become so insistent that you (as a reader of this column) know just what I drive. It’s because I now seem to be driving the stealth van — the highJOHN way equivalent of BARTUS Wonder Woman’s invisible plane, or is a City Council member and a a Romulan Bird-offormer Mayor of Prey with the cloakthe City of Maraing device engaged. thon. John is also Judging from the a musician who amount of near performs around town at various misses and cutestablishments. offs I’ve endured recently, I don’t believe anyone can see my vehicle! It’s both annoying and unnerving to be driving along, minding my own business and observing our traffic laws, and in an instant be forced to hit the brakes and swerve as I avoid another imminent collision with a driver who wants to see if his vehicle can share the space that mine presently occupies. It has happened so many times recently that I’ve begun to develop an invisibility complex. Unlike the often-studied inferiority complex (as pioneered by Alfred Adler), the invisibility complex (pioneered by my van) is characterized by one’s actual presence diminishing or even disappearing in the eyes of others. Maybe it’s happened to you: waving at a friend who doesn’t see you waving at all, seeing someone you know at a local watering hole who can’t seem to acknowledge your presence, or swerving to avoid a fellow driver who pulls out right in front of your approaching vehicle. Maybe it’s people you know, good friends and acquaintances, who plow headlong into your vehicle as it sits parked, minding its own business. Before I owned my current ride,
I drove other trucks and vans, both white and black. In my pseudo-scientific observations, I wasn’t able to discern any real difference in the effects of the invisibility complex on either of those polar opposite shades. Having never owned a fire engine red vehicle, I’d be interested in seeing if that color would offset the effects of the invisibility complex. One aspect of modern driving has nothing to do with the invisibility complex at all. Now I’ve already admitted to driving a nearly invisible cargo van. I have, however, rented a variety of newer cars and trucks over the years. I was almost surprised to find that the car manufacturers still install a turn signal lever on the steering column. Yes… here comes another turn signal rant. This is a problem that crosses all socio-economic boundaries. It doesn’t matter if you just arrived in this country from Guatemala, or if you’re a wealthy eastern shore golf and yachtsman type who’s relatives arrived on the Mayflower. Like the SOB (Son Of a Boater) who was driving a late model Lincoln Continental with Maryland tags in Marathon recently. As expected, the invisibility complex sets in and the SOB cuts me off, pulling right into my lane and giving me just enough room to not hit him with my stealth Ford. He then proceeds to turn everywhere I was going to turn, but without, however, using his turn signals to indicate his intentions. As I was headed to a gig, I ended up following his Lincoln all the way to his final destination. Not once, during any of the multiple turns required to get there, did Mr. Boatman reach for that friendly little lever attached to the steering column. Maybe I’ve been looking at this all wrong. When I learned how to drive, I was taught to drive defensively, and to observe the rules of the road that included prohibitions against cutting people off and encouraging the use of turn signals. Here in the world of 21st century South Florida driving, these things don’t seem to matter. What does matter, however, is the fact that a Ford cargo van has a lot more steel and sheer metal mass than any late model car, including Mr. Yachtsman’s fancy Lincoln. Maybe it’s time to let Detroit steel do the talking. And there go the insurance rates… • • • • • John Bartus performs Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Friday and Saturday with Storm Watch at Boondocks, and Saturday afternoon at the Postcard Inn. www. johnbartus.com

SOPHOMORE
What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am a part of the Key West High School Marching Conchs, NHS, GSA, and Mu Alpha Theta. All of these reflect something I care about, and I get to work with others to reach our goals. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Elizabeth Ford, for being the truest, most neutral and aligned person I have ever met. She keeps her mind open and caffeinated. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP Government is the most important. Because after the finals of this election it helped me understand what went on. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? Tumblr, for keeping up with art blogs and web comics. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The loss of native plant habitats due to construction and/or invasive species is a problem. It’s important to educate people about these issues so they don’t keep coddling a species that could result in an unfortunate domino effect. What are your plans after high school? I hope to get into MIT, or one of my other college choices. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Maybe, when I retire. The weather is nice here, and it’s relatively safe. It’s just really expensive for raising kids. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … that there is nothing more important in growing up than interacting with people different than yourself.

Kathy Rogers joins American Caribbean Real Estate Kathy, a self-proclaimed "Air Force brat," has enjoyed the benefits of growing up all over the U.S. and Europe. After graduating from Texas State University, Kathy began her professional sales career in life insurance sales, beginning with making tons of cold-calls to secure clients. After marriage and two beautiful daughters, came life teaching in the Texas educational system during her children’s’ formative years. In the mid-’90s, Kathy was able to return to her professional passion in life — selling new homes with a national builder. These experiences helped to prepare Kathy for a future in real estate sales in the Keys. In the early 2000s, Kathy was asked to take over a new home development called Bonefish Bay. Kathy has enjoyed helping others buy and sell Florida Keys properties over the years. Kathy loves the natural beauty of the Keys and the comfortable and fun lifestyle. “Kathy’s experience and extensive community involvement have made her one of the most knowledgeable Realtors in the Keys and we are proud to have her on our team here at American Caribbean Real Estate,” said Broker Ginger Henderson. t was December 1993 and it was dark when JJ’s Dog House bartender Renee drove down from Miami to visit friends. “I had no idea there was water on both sides of us until the next day when we drove over the Seven Mile Bridge,” she said. “I can’t believe I live here.” She’s been at JJ’s Dog House for the past two years, only working once a week on Mondays, but has been in the Keys as a permanent resident for the past 22 years. Her favorite drink to make: The Mind Eraser. The ingredients are root beer schnapps, Smirnoff vodka, club soda and Coke, she said it’s made with love and a smile, just like her homemade mashed potatoes. “Everyone loves a Mind Eraser, because it can be drank by one person, two, three, a family,” she said. “It’s fun.” When she isn’t working, she’s gardening. “I love being a happy homemaker,” she said. She also cleans houses on the weekends. In her free time, she loves flat calm water, trips to Sombrero Lighthouse and hanging out with her two favorites: her husband Kevin and her dog A.J. JJ’s Dog House is located at 10700 Overseas Highway in Marathon.

Martha Roca, Air Methods patient; baby Jacob Roca; Jo Thevenet, flight nurse; Leo Mijares, flight paramedic; and Gary Glover, pilot
Baby born in flight This summer, the LifeNet Key West crew picked up Martha Roca, who was just 26-weeks pregnant, from a nearby hospital to transport her to Miami for pregnancy complications. They were surprised when she told them halfway through the flight, “this baby is coming.
Jo Thevenet and baby Jacob Roca
Thanks to the calm strength of the medical crew, including Jo Thevenet, flight nurse, and Leo Mijares, flight paramedic, baby Jacob was born in flight at just two lbs. Gary Glover, pilot, handled the situation smoothly and was successfully able to bring Martha and Jacob to the care they both needed.
