What’s the worst Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
Grilled Oysters | 16 Taps – 150 Bottled & Canned Beers
Who knows what’s under that gold and silver foil, lurking under that big red bow? Opening a Christmas present can be a joy but also, da da dummmm — a total surprise. And, sometimes, not a good one. How does one say thank you for a purse that looks like a clock? A year’s supply of craft beers from Hungary? Or a “homemade” gift, like a wool sweater when you live in the Keys? So we dared to ask locals…

P
reviously, when citizens wanted to search the Clerk of the Courts records online, all they could “see” was just a docket listing. Sure, it had all the basics — plaintiff, defendant and case number — but the nitty gritty detail was missing. On Tuesday, Clerk of the Court Amy Heavilin announced the “Public Access Portal” now offers 24-hour access to all Monroe County court records except for those specifically exempted by law. Previously, citizens were able to search the official record, but not the court record. Now, the search not only reveals the eviction notices, traffic tickets and lawsuit filings, but users can click on the document icon and read the pages from start to finish. “That’s the big difference. You can see the actual document itself,” said Heavilin. Online docket information is available for most cases filed from approximately 1990 to present and document images are available from 2007 to present for most case types. Not every type of court record is available: cases involving juveniles and probate, for example, are restricted. The incredible advantage, however, is access. Citizens no longer have to travel to a Clerk of the Court office to request the public document and then pay $1 per page in copy fees. And it’s available 24 hours, of course. During the first 90-day test period, the public is encouraged to use the site and
Page 5 offer feedback. The Clerk’s office will launch phase two in 90 days — allowing professionals and an even greater level of access. Paralegal Lisa Carey, from the offices of attorney Nicholas Mulick in the Upper Keys, sees the promise. “Especially with our geographic issues, for us to be able to work electronically relieves us of a huge burden. In the past, I’ve had to drive down to Marathon to file,” Carey said. “Eventually, I see the court record system statewide getting to a point where we have access to everything whether it’s filed in Dade or Volusia or wherever.” The public records expansion is in response to a Florida Supreme Court order in 2014, instructing every county clerk of the court to make the information available online. “All the counties in the state of Florida were mandated under the same supreme court order,” Heavilin said. “But it wasn’t as clear cut as everyone thought. We had to go through a rigorous application process. We had to show our design and implementation and receive approval. It’s a big change, but it’s a change for the good.” (Editor’s note: And, yes, I can see the traffic ticket I received this year. It’s all there in painful detail — the infraction, the fine, the deputy’s name. Ouch.)

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
KEY WEST WEEKLY / DECEMBER 16, 2016
1. Full name: Robert Edward Nesbitt. 2. Worst nickname: “Piano Man” (as in “Yo, piano man”). 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? George Gershwin. He died when he was only 38-years-old. Imagine all the music he had left in him. 4. What question do you hate to answer? “What's your favorite song?” 5. Name a performer that would surprise people you secretly love/ admire/adore? James Brown. When I played in San Francisco at the Fairmont, James Brown was a frequent guest and would come into the bar and sing duets with me — show tunes! The San Francisco Chronicle called us “one of music's oddest duos.”
COME TO THE CABARET 20 questions with Bobby Nesbitt: Pianist and Entertainer HAYS BLINCKMANN
L
hays@keysweekly.com
ooking up from the piano keys, without skipping a beat, singer Bobby Nesbitt can’t help but broadly smile when a friend walks into the room. Charming and earnest, Nesbitt always connects with his audience or the town he has made his home, Key West. Maybe it’s the cabaret music, his lengthy musical history or his genuine good nature, he never fails to put a song in all our hearts. Nesbitt has played the piano since a child in Rochester, New York. Shying away from classical and preferring Broadway glam, he attended State University of New York (Oswego) to earn degrees in music and theater. He paid his dues in New York, but one small vacation in Key West in 1976 and, like many, he made one large move to the island. Key West has been his home but that didn’t stop him from making the world his stage. From playing at the Savoy in London, Harry’s New York Bar in Munich and The Fairmount in San Francisco, Nesbitt has performed “American classic songbook” from New York to Chicago and beyond. He has entertained President and Mrs. Carter and his CD “Big Time” was heard at the 2002 Winter Olympics games as well as on Delta Airlines. But Nesbitt’s music has always belonged to Key West. At places like the Monster, LaTeDa, the Pier House, Rooftop Cafe, his “Bobby in the Lobby” series at Tennessee Williams Theatre, and now Beachside and the Little Room Jazz Club, Nesbitt has been behind the subtle tune heard in Key West for almost four decades. “Key West has the most extraordinary arts community in the world, and I feel fortunate to be a part of such a giving supportive place,” Nesbitt said.
6. If you won the lottery, what extravagant thing would you do? I would stay for a month in the penthouse suite at the Savoy Hotel in London. I performed there for a year, and I could barely afford a drink, much less a room. 7. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? The Flash. I always seem to be dashing somewhere. 8. What is your nerdiest passion? I love to read recipes. I talk to my Mom every day, and we seem to always talk about what we are making for dinner. 9. If you could take three items on a deserted island, what? why? One, an iPhone with an incredible range; two, the novel “100 Years of Solitude” for inspiration; three, the complete series of “Gilligan's Island” so I could see how it's done. 10. If invisible, what would you do in Key West? I would hang out in a dressing room of a local theater or drag club. You can't imagine the dirt you hear. 11. What was your first thought this morning? Publix or Winn-Dixie? 12. Favorite guilty pleasure? Turner Classic Movies, especially if they are in black and white.
13. What misconception do people have about cabaret? I think that people think that because cabaret takes place in smaller spaces, it is easier and more casual than performing in a large theater. I find it easier singing in a large theater where I can't focus on faces in the audience. Also, alcohol is a factor with the audience and it can make it a challenge. 14. Funniest Key West sighting or story? Many years ago when I was playing at the Monster, Leonard Bernstein came to see me. He sat at the piano and started doing his songs from "West Side Story." Just then, three older ladies came in looking for me, glanced at the piano disappointedly and started to leave. The manager asked them if they wanted to stay. “No,” one of them said, “Bobby's all through playing and some old turkey is there banging out ‘West Side Story.’” (You can't make this stuff up.) 15. You are sitting at a diner counter eating … who would you want to walk in and sit next to you? Michelle Obama. I love her sense of humor, style, and grace. She is the classiest first lady in ages. Finish these sentences: 16. My partner would describe me as … I actually asked Mike this and he answered, “There's more than meets the eye.” He somehow thinks I am different at home than the sweet friendly person I am in public! (Actor Mike Mulligan and Nesbitt met and have been together in Key West since 1981.) 17. My autobiography would be titled … “Notes From a Piano Bar.” 18. My most embarrassing performance was … at a senior citizen's center in New York. One of the ladies in the audience was getting hungry and impatient that she couldn't eat until the show was over. When I announced my next number I heard her say, "When will this nightmare ever end?" Well, of course, that has become one of our catch phrases and it still makes me laugh. 19. The world needs more … arts education and money in general for the arts. It is embarrassing to see the amount we spend in comparison to other countries. And I don't have much hope for the incoming administration. 20. When I go, I will go … as they say in the song “Cabaret” – “When I go, I'm going like Elsie.” (But maybe not from too many pills and liquor.)

Follow these tips to stay safe on the road: • If you will be drinking, plan on not driving. • Plan your safe ride home before you start the party. Designate a sober driver ahead of time. If you become intoxicated, do not drive — call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member or use public transportation. • If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys, take them home, or help them arrange a safe way home. • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

Bruschetta and Magri e Belli, Fine Italian Dining
B
uonasera! The lyrical language, the wine, the landscape and sí sí sí, the food, what is not to love about Italy? Bellissimo! Italy has come to Key West, senza the olive groves, but true Italiani are here making fresh pasta and fresh gelato. Look no further than downtown for “Little Italy” in Key West. Two new businesses are bringing old school Italian recipes and flavors for locals to enjoy — feel free to say grazie. Guiseppe Prestia from Sicily has just opened restaurant Bruschetta Cucina Italiana at 112 Fitzpatrick St., and is serving pasta dishes made from scratch. The menu is filled with classic Italian flavors composed by Prestia. There are eight different bruschettas, but the caponata is a must try. Prestia recommends the antipasti grilled octopus or shrimp in a light gorgonzola sauce. For secundi, pick a fresh pasta with the finest quality vitello (veal) or local, fresh pesce del giorno. And don’t forget to pair the meal with a fine Italian Barolo or Montepulciano wine. “The easier the ingredients, the better the taste,” Prestia. After dinner at Bruschetta, walk to 407 E Front St. for a traditional Italian gelato at Magri e Belli. Owner Maria Grazia Laghi’s grandfather was an Italian farmer who started making gelato after the war. The family business started in 1956, in Rimini, Italy and grew to 15 shops. With good reason, it is one of the most popular gelateria's along the Adriatic coast. The secret? For three generations, the family has used

the freshest ingredients in their gelato (fresh fruit, fresh crème) mixed in special machines that Laghi brought with her from Italy. “Everything I do is in honor of my father,” said Laghi’s. “And every shop is a place of love.” Open two weeks, customers are already getting to know Laghi’s delightful Italian accent and charm as she heaps one, two or three scoops of delicious gelato in a cup — all for the same price, Italian style. Decorated with the green, red and white of Italy, Magri e Belli’s real homemade gelato is perfect any time of day.

ate Beehler migrated south from Baltimore, Maryland and planned on staying six months. Six years later, she calls Key West home and Hard Rock Café her home away from home. “I get to meet a lot of cool people working here,” she said. “People from all over the world, and our locals who like to spend time here too.” Shaking up a “Magical Mojito,” a Hard Rock specialty, Beehler said it’s made differently with gin and cucumber with the mint strained out of the drink before serving. “It’s a sweet drink and fun to sip on,” she said. Pointing out the locals-only happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. with half-off drinks, appetizers and flatbreads, she said the bruschetta is a fan-favorite with the mojito. “We love our locals,” she said from the outside bar overlooking the Duval Street madness. “And, it’s a great spot to people watch.” When she isn’t at work, she likes biking. Scratch that, she likes riding her Razor scooter. “I left my bike at a friend’s house during Goombay [in October] and haven’t been by to get it back yet,” she said blaming it on “Keys time.” While pulling the scooter out from behind the bar, “Plus, this thing is a great conversation piece.” Hard Rock Café is located at 313 Duval St., Key West.

At Tennessee Williams Theater, Nutcracker Key West is the largest community production brought to a Key West stage. It is the holiday classic, reimagined and relocated to the Keys. More than 60 local community members join 15 professional dancers from around the world in the biennial production. KEY WEST WEEKLY / DECEMBER 16, 2016 The Key West Weekly is proud to partner with Key West High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and KWHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Conch Pride” and congratulate all of the outstanding students of the week. What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am part of Mu Alpha Theta, Gay Straight Alliance, and National Honor Society, where I am the committee chair. Mu Alpha Theta teaches me that math will forever be difficult, and that I have to persevere to succeed. GSA emphasizes the importance of equality and acceptance of everyone in our society. And, NHS has helped me create a permanent pool of volunteers at the botanical garden – they really need the help.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? There are too many invasive and exotic plants taking over the Keys. If the natives are permanently displaced, the ecosystem will be damaged. What are your plans after high school? I want to attend university and major in microbiology, and I hope to get a job in an altruistic research company where I can help make new discoveries in pathology to help the underprivileged around the world.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Mr. Kremer. I’ve had him as a teacher for the past three years, and not one of his classes has bored me. He always tell new stories about the world and of historical events. He’s inspired me to be an educated adult. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Philosophy, because it has revealed to me the different ways people look at life, which is important when trying to understand a person without judging them at first glance.

FUNNY GIRL Paula Poundstone coming to the Key West Theater HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
C
omedian Paula Poundstone would be amazing at a dinner party. Clever, quick and insightful, talking with Poundstone feels like an unexpected ride, exciting and funny as hell. After 37 years, she is a comedy veteran and has the stories to prove it. Her casual remarks cover topics like late friend Robin Williams, being overly excited meeting the cast of “MASH” or even insider tittle-tattle like, “Alex Trebek is actually a really funny guy.” Whatever one-liner comes out, she keeps her audiences wanting more. Poundstone will be performing at the Key West Theater on Thursday Dec. 22. Her shows aren’t just the usual comedy schtick; expect her full repertoire of jokes about kids, family and, yes, politics. But the draw is always the two-way conversation with her audience. “About one-third of the night is unscripted and, for me, that’s the best part,” said Poundstone. “I ask the audience questions, then what happens is the show becomes a one-time thing, unique to that audience.” Poundstone loves her shows to be a little different every time. “People are in a mental health crisis, computers and social media have isolated us,” comments Poundstone. “People require human contact, even if you come alone, you are still a part of a group. And nothing can substitute laughing in a group.” Poundstone, while joking about her own addiction to email and
“I still love to tour, but it’s not like the back of a sweatshirt or anything.” —Paula Poundstone, comedian.
Twitter, is an advocate against devices in schools and will likely talk about that too. It was the late and legendary, Robin Williams who steered his management company to help propel Poundstone’s career. “Robin brought a renewed interest in comedy, people came to the clubs hoping to see him, and they saw us,” said Poundstone, who fondly remembers William’s passion and assistance. Poundstone’s first double-live CD, "North by Northwest: Paula Poundstone Live!" debuted in June of 2016 in the No. 1 spot on Amazon’s “Hot New Releases.” She is also a regular panelist on NPR’s hit show “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me” and her second book will publish in the Spring of 2017. Almost four decades in the business, she’s said, “I gotta lot of jokes to set my sails to.” Seeing Poundstone live is definitely worth the voyage.

instein and Picasso walk into a Parisian bar… It could have happened, but probably didn’t. Nevertheless, this Red Barn Theatre play illustrates the hilarity that might have ensued. Imagine it is 1904, or somewhere around then. A young Albert Einstein, played by Marc Crown, has recently finished his unpublished book and meanders into the wrong bar to see if fate will join him with his love. Between the banter of the “newly old” Gaston and the barkeeps, it is 120 minutes of pure joy to watch “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” Especially after Pablo Picasso, played by Eric Braojos, wanders into the same bar that fateful night. Written by funnyman Steve Martin, Red Barn Theatre’s director Joy Hawkins said Martin is a true Renaissance man who knows about everything from art to banjos. “I hope he will write more plays,” she said. The audience agrees, treating the cast and crew to standing ovation. It stars Erin McKenna, Mook J, Bob Smith, Lisa Elena Monda, Wayne Dapser, Pony Charvey, and Kaleb Smith-Wood. Within the first two minutes of the play, Suzanne, an admirer of Pablo Picasso’s womanizing ways and one-night-stand partner, appears on stage to search for him wearing only a bra. And then comes the payoff: While the two main characters vie for the attention of the beautiful
woman and for each other’s respect as shapers of the new world, and the rest of the characters toss in their own funny, whimsical, absurd, goofy (pick one or all) world views, a huge battle of ideas about art, science, lust, and the future of the world erupts. Laughs ranging from a giggle to a gut-busting guffaw. It’s a must-see for a good laugh this holiday season. Hawkins added that tickets to plays make perfect holiday gifts or, even better, a sponsorship of a chair for $500. “We are going to continue bringing big things to this small space,” she said. “Picasso” runs through Saturday, Jan. 14 at 319 Duval St. For tickets visit redbarntheatre.com or call 305-296-9911. KEY WEST WEEKLY / DECEMBER 16, 2016
Martha Roca, Air Methods patient; baby Jacob Roca; Jo Thevenet, flight nurse; Leo Mijares, flight paramedic; and Gary Glover, pilot
Baby born in flight This summer, the LifeNet Key West crew picked up Martha Roca, who was just 26-weeks pregnant, from a nearby hospital to transport her to Miami for pregnancy complications. They were surprised when she told them halfway through the flight, “this baby is coming.
Jo Thevenet and baby Jacob Roca
Thanks to the calm strength of the medical crew, including Jo Thevenet, flight nurse, and Leo Mijares, flight paramedic, baby Jacob was born in flight at just two lbs. Gary Glover, pilot, handled the situation smoothly and was successfully able to bring Martha and Jacob to the care they both needed.
