The Florida Keys were inundated by traffic over the holidays. Thousands of visitors from all over came to spend some time in the southernmost paradise. With the influx came traffic jams and numerous accidents. Some were fatal. To mitigate the effect of visitors, the idea of a toll before entering the Keys has at times been proposed. Revenue from a toll could pay for more law enforcement protecting our roads. Revenue could also be used to improve infrastructure. So the Weekly asked locals…

A
dispute between neighboring property owners and the City of Marathon was resolved Tuesday when the Marathon City Council voted 4-1 to abandon a right-of-way parcel to Marathon Garbage Service over the objections of BC Storage. Councilman Mark Senmartin was the only councilman to dissent. “I’m not in favor of giving away city property. I don’t see the advantage to the city if we give away taxpayer property,” Senmartin said. “But if it were me, I would be King Solomon. I would solve it with a simple berm down the middle of the road and everyone have a nice day.” However, a clause in city ordinances dictates that if a right-of-way is abandoned, it should revert to adjacent owners who own land within the boundaries of the plat. The ordinance was amended a year ago. Marathon Garbage Service is part of the original Mead subdivision, while BC storage, owned by Frank Smith, sits on the next subdivision to the west. Marathon Garbage Service’s attorney Frank Greenman listed the advantages to the city. “If the city approves the abandonment, the property goes back on the tax rolls. Marathon Garbage Service has provided excellent service for 60 years; they are a contributing member of our community,” Greenman said, adding that the amount of garbage generated in Marathon has increased over the years. “It won’t solve the problem, but it will give them 5,000 square feet of more land which will be useful.” It was the second time Greg Konrath, owner of Marathon Garbage Service, has made the application to have the city abandon the right of way. There are serious environmental issues with the property,” Waldera said. While both parties allege the other is contaminating the groundwater (currently monitored by state Department of Environmental Protection ground wells), the council was reminded the presence or absence of pollution had no bearing on its specific task. The criteria for abandonment covered items like whether it hurts pedestrian, vehicular or commercial traffic, and whether it interferes with access to utilities. The applicant pledged to allow

he Key Colony Beach City Commission on Thursday selected Chris Moonis as the municipality’s top adminis-
trator. He currently lives in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, and serves as Borough of Myerstown Manager - a municipality 3 times larger than KCB with a staff of 11 full-time employees. His resume includes nearly 20 years of municipal work, including a stint as a lobbyist for the Pennsyl-

used for advertising; second, that local municipalities be reimbursed 100 percent for brick and mortar projects. Currently, only Monroe County receives 100 percent reimbursement, while municipalities receive only 50 percent. The change would also increase brick and mortar reimbursements for non-profits such as Crane Point, Pigeon Key, and Dolphin Research Center from 50 to 75 percent. • The city is ending the Community Development Block Grant that helped needy citizens complete their sewer hookups. Marathon will reapply under the category of housing rehabilitation that can be used to fix homes with flood issues, code violations or roof leaks. The new $700,000 grant is good for two years, and each applicant that qualifies could receive up to $100,000. • The council heard from neighbors of the proposed Seaward project — 45 apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms, and 10 market rate units on the waterfront. The neighbors are concerned about access from 86th and 88th streets to the project. Council and the developer have already made some changes to the site plan and more are expected.

He expects to be back in the Keys within six weeks. His salary with benefits will range from $55,000 to $65,000 annually with the expectation that he will work about 80 hours per month. Moonis said he will subsidize his salary with municipal consulting as he hopes someday to purchase a home in Key Colony Beach.

he Marathon Community Park was crowded with all things Celtic this past weekend. On Saturday, crowds braved the impending weather and on Sunday, they came out again to enjoy a brisk and breezy day. Besides vendors, festival-goers of the annual Florida Keys Celtic Fest enjoyed highland athletics demonstrations and sheep dog demonstrations. The event raises funds for St. Columba Episcopal Church’s Hammock House. The nonprofit provides free after-school programs and summer camps for local children. —Weekly Staff report

he purple carpet is rolling out to help raise funds for the Middle Keys Relay for Life. The purple-infused event will take place this Saturday, Jan. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Key Colony Inn. “It’s the first one and we hope to make it an annual event,” said Candice Doyle, who is on the committee for the local Relay for Life. “We wanted some fresh ideas to raise money for such a great cause, and we all agreed this would be an amazing event to support something that affects us all.” The idea was brought forth by Jenni Cameron, who is chairing the event. “Relay is important to me because I lost my mother to cancer, and many of my friends are fighting cancer,” she said. “We are trying to make an impact, even if only one person.” Middle Keys Relay for Life raises money for about six months leading up to the April 8 event at Marathon Community Park. The money goes to American Cancer Society’s cancer research and patient care programs, for things like medical grants, transportation, and lodging for those undergoing treatment. “We needed a fundraiser,” Cameron said. “And it’s a good excuse for the people in Marathon to get dressed up and out of the house.” Highlights of the event will be DJ Stan Webb, photographer Maggie Sayer taking pictures along the purple carpet, a silent auction and a buffet dinner. The event will have a cash bar after the first complimentary drink. Also, be on the lookout for the annual bachelor/bachelorette auction coming up in February at Florida Keys Country Club. Tickets for the event are available by calling Jenni Cameron at 305731-9361. The ticket price is $100 per person; a limited number may be available at the door.

ight-year-old Caidyn Young had three questions of her surgeon at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati, Ohio. One, is it going to hurt? Two, can I bring my special Shriner stuffed bears? Three, can I get my ears pierced? According to her mother, Christine Todd-Young, the answers were a qualified yes (painkillers will knock down the pain), yes, and yes. In February, she will be traveling north with her mom and dad to correct a congenital deformity — microtia, or “little ear” — where the external ear doesn’t develop normally. It’s a rare condition only affecting one in 8,000 children. The entire expense including transportation, surgery, rehabilitation, accommodations and even meals and tutoring, is being underwritten by Shriners International. The group has a local chapter, Marathon Shrine Club, headed by President Chris Clauss. “Chris and the local Shriners have been helping raise money for kids for years. Now they are helping a kid they actually know,” said Todd-Young, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys. “She’s a great kid,” said Clauss. “You hope you never know somebody who needs that kind of help, but now we have one and it’s exciting to be part of the process of healing.” The women’s auxiliary group of the Shriners, the Keyettes, held its annual banquet in mid-December and asked young Caidyn to be the guest of honor. Her mom said she was just as surprised as the rest of the guests when her daughter took the floor to speak to the women and thank them for them involvement. “She got a little teary eyed,” Todd-Young said. “When she sat down, I asked her if she was okay. Caidyn said, ‘I’m just so happy!’” Todd-Young said there’s no way her family could have afforded the surgery on their own, at a cost of something like $25,000. “Health insurance companies consider this to be a ‘cosmetic

The eight-hour surgery entails removing Caidyn’s own rib cartilage and skin grafts from the back of her head to build an appropriate-size external ear. Two more surgeries will follow. According to Clauss, the 80-member Shrine Club in Marathon is one of the most hardworking in Florida. He said the group often out-fundraises clubs in South Florida and he chalks it up to the generous nature of Marathon and Key Colony Beach residents. By far, its biggest fundraiser of the year is the “boot drive” where Shriners collect spare change at the traffic lights in Marathon. All of the money goes to the Shrine Hospitals (there are 22) or to the Shrine Transportation Fund. “You’d be surprised how many people give. And then there’s the ones that say, ‘Here’s one hundred dollars. You helped my nephew,’” Clauss said. And while the Shriners are a hardworking bunch, they also know how to make merry. “We wear funny hats and drive funny cars and you can’t believe how fast I can make a balloon animal,” Claus said, laughing, “but it’s all for the kids.” And if you’re helping kids, you might as well have fun.

he laughs come early and often in “The Hallelujah Girls.” The comedy, which runs through Feb. 4 at Marathon Community Theatre, features a femaledominated cast serving up a mix of optimism and goofiness, a range of commentary on relationships, and a persistent belief in the possibilities of life. The plot revolves around Sugar Lee Thompson’s (Trish Hintze) plan to turn an old church into a day spa in her small hometown of Eden Falls, Georgia. Her middle-aged friends are along for the ride when old high school romance, heartbreak and rivalry surface, threaten-

There are bits of business throughout, starting with the strangest headache remedy you’ll ever see, done in hilarious unison by Carlene Travis (played by Jenn Mixon-Eick), Nita Mooney (Kathy Hunt) and Mavis Flowers (Nancy Smith). Subplots rise up and help the story along: Sugar’s longtime friend Carlene – whose three husbands have died – gets herself a suitor. Sugar’s long-ago boyfriend comes back at a time she could really use his help, if only she could forgive him for the past. Her

high-school nemesis Bunny (Simone Stanton), who has never quite gotten over something that happened back then, enjoys the chance she gets to ruin everything. Each member of the cast has more than one fine moment. Sugar Lee and Bobby Dwayne Dillahunt (Hintze’s real-life fiancé, John Keller) keep you guessing whether they will or won’t, right to the end. Mixon-Eick’s Carlene is completely believable as the friend we all wish we could have, and the one we wish we could save from a bad choice. Smith’s Mavis delivers some of the best punch lines and makes perhaps the best entrance, although Suzanne Terpos as Crystal Hart could lay claim to the entrance title, bringing a true flightiness to the proceedings, with a series of costumes, odd songs and air-headed lines delivered perfectly. Hunt’s Nita relays the plots of romance novels with a nearly pornographic breathiness. Neil Angiullo makes the most of his role as letter carrier – and suitor of Carlene – Porter Padgett. Stanton brings a subtle menace to the villain’s role, such that you root for her comeuppance. You might think you know what’s going to happen. And you might be right. But there’s a curveball or two waiting for you along the way.

uck Key Charters is making the first foray into the Florida KeysCuba connection that many business leaders have wanted for decades. With a proper charter service, and the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport (complete with Customs), it’s now a reality. Melanie Slaga co-owns Duck Key Charters with her husband, Brian. She emphasizes the convenience of the Marathon airport. “I’ve been to Cuba in the traditional manner, leaving from Miami. It adds at least four hours to the trip. Leaving from Marathon, our guests arrive 20 minutes before the flight departs, spend less than 45 minutes in the air, and spend about 30 minutes in a private airport terminal at the Havana airport.”
Florida Keys tourism leaders envision the trips to Cuba as an add-on to a Keys vacation. “I think we will attract a lot more visitors to the Middle Keys, who then travel to Cuba and come back to Marathon,” said Marathon Chamber of Commerce CEO Daniel Samess. He traveled to Cuba less than four months ago, exploring the logistics. “We established relationships with vendors — tour guides, vacation rental agents and privately owned restaurants,” Samess said. “It was great exposure — learning what Cuba is today and where it’s going, as opposed to what it was yesterday.”
Duck Key Charters flies a Piper Aztec to Cuba. Flights can accommodate up to 5 passengers and cost about $2,500 total. Duck Key Charters partners with World Caribbean Travel which arranges the trips (two to three nights, plus accommodations and a personal tour guide) for $875 to $1,050 per person. More importantly, World Caribbean Travel arranges for the visas ($700 per group).

“The most common is the people-to-people category of visa,” said Yunior Rodriguez of World Caribbean Travel. “You get to know the Cuban people and see how they live, explore the cultural sense.” Rodriguez said his guests often meet with children and see their after-school activities — such as sports or dance classes. Samess said his group took over baseball equipment to donate to Cuban teams. “It’s the national sport,” he said. Because Duck Key Charters and World Tour Cuba serve small groups of tourists, the packages are thoughtful, somewhat customizable and definitely not one-size-fits-all. “Our guests experience a door-to-door concierge type service,” said Slaga. “There’s also a strong local connection. Visitors can stay in a bed and breakfast, or what Cubans call a ‘casa particular’ and they have a private chaperone or tour leader.” Slaga said the tour operators are working on hiring fishing guides to take anglers out, in addition to tours of tobacco farms, rum distilleries and, of course, Hemingway House. REGATTA COMES TO KEY WEST RACE WEEK STARTS SUNDAY

op-ranked sailors from throughout the world will compete in Quantum Key West Race Week 2017, the 30th anniversary of one of the most prestigious sailing events on the international regatta circuit. The event, sponsored by international sailmaker Quantum Sails, is the largest in the U.S. for nonOlympic racers, although participants include Olympic aspirants and medalists. Nearly 600 sailors representing competitors from the America's Cup, Olympic Games, Volvo Ocean Race and other events will gather in Key West to enjoy competitive sailing in subtropical waters and stiff Atlantic Ocean breezes. Notable 2017 competitors include past America's Cup and Rolex Yachtsman of the Year winners. "Quantum Key West Race Week has a sterling reputation as a sailors' regatta, offering some of the most consistent racing conditions of any venue in the world," said John Fisher, regatta chairman. "We have the world's top sailors and the newest and best boats and equipment." More than 90 registered boats in nine classes, representing 11 nations, will sail on three racing circuits. With practice sessions on Sunday, Jan. 15, harbor starts are scheduled at 9:45 a.m. Monday through Friday, Jan. 16-20, with racing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ten races are scheduled per class, and courses are to be determined each

At Schooner Wharf Bar, entrants swallow a shot of rum from an ice luge. They then tie a bowline and use it to lasso a piling that is on wheels several feet away, pull the piling to themselves and drink the beer sitting on its base, turning the supposedly empty bottle upside down on their head. The 2016 champion Brian Plate of SUP Key West finished with a time of 7:52.

ust two days after the Quantum Key West Race Week regatta, sailing teams will race from the Florida Keys to two Cuban cities. Sailing teams racing monohulls and multihulls will compete during the 13-day Conch Republic Cup, set for Sunday, Jan. 22, through Friday, Feb. 3. Sailors will race from Key West to Cuba's Varadero and Havana, and back. Hosted by Key West Community Sailing Center and Cuba's Hemingway International Yacht Club, sailors will complete a triangle: a 100-mile contest from Key West to Varadero, a 90-mile race from Varadero to Havana, and a 90-mile leg from Havana to Key West. The race began in 1997 with a Key West race to Varadero, and expanded to include Havana in 1999. The Cup had a 13-year hiatus after U.S. authorities enforced a Cuban embargo in 2003. The race resumed earlier this year, following an easing of tensions between the U.S. and Cuba.
The event's Race Village and registration will open at Dante’s Key West at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22. Exhibition racing and vendor displays are scheduled Sunday and Monday, Jan. 23, daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The regatta formally begins Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a 5 p.m. start from Key West to Varadero. On Thursday, Jan. 26, sailors are scheduled to sail from Varadero along the Cuban coast to Havana. On Sunday, Jan. 29, a Havana Harbor buoy race at Morro Castle and a yacht parade along the Malecon are scheduled. Sailors race back to Key West on Thursday, Feb. 2, with an awards celebration scheduled Friday, Feb. 3, at Dante's. The 2016 Cup attracted 435 sailors on 54 racing boats representing 25 states and five countries. South Carolina skipper Eddie Evans, a 40-plus year veteran sailing his Beneteau Oceanis 381 yacht, Naut-On Call, won the 2016 Cup.

tour including rare World War II aircraft will soon land in Marathon. The Collings Foundation’s 110-city Wings of Freedom tour will bring a vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, North American B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang to the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport from Monday to Thursday, Jan. 30 - Feb. 2. The B-17 is one of only eight in flying condition in the United States. The B-24J Liberator is the sole remaining example of its type flying in the world. The B-25 is best known for being used in the daring Doolittle raid and the P-51 "Toulouse Nuts" fighter received the 2016 Oshkosh Grand Champion Award for restoration. The B-17, B-25 & B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers’ “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking Axis fighters. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum. The tour is scheduled to arrive at noon on Monday, Jan. 30, departing after noon exercises on Thursday, Feb. 2.

ack in 1995, it seemed youth art and music programs were in trouble in the Upper Keys. Judy Justice, Coral Shores High School teacher at the time, saw a growing need for supporting young local musicians. So she wrangled up musicians from around the area, one of whom was current Islamorada Community Entertainment Director Dave Feder. A year later, Feder took the lead and, over the next 15 years, helped put on local concerts and productions, including the long standing Bay Jam festival. With the help of former Mayor Ron Levy, the two would found Islamorada Community Entertainment (ICE) in 2006. ICE was integral in the construction of the Founders Park amphitheater, hiring the company to build it, and supervising the ins and outs of developing a venue the community would be proud of. Nowadays, ICE sponsors roughly 20 annual events and handles the production of each one. Some of ICE’s most popular concerts in the past are Bay Jam, Bay Day Jazz Fest, Bay Jamma, and the upcoming Baygrass Bluegrass festival. ICE subsidizes most of the events to guarantee patrons can enjoy the show at a reasonable price, as well. The Baygrass Bluegrass festival’s origins are also closely tied to Keys native Robbie McClung, who, as a resident of the Upper Keys and musician, saw the door for a resurgent genre wide open. Since he partnered with ICE, he’s had a vital role in coordinating much of the work. Along with productions, the orga-
nization holds workshops with local artists at schools around the Keys. The organization has also provided more than $70,000 in art, music, and dance scholarships to local students over the years. “When we come across kids who show an affinity for the arts, we try to take them in and cultivate that passion. If they are willing, we teach them how to mix, set up and break down venues, run audio and video, and sometimes conduct repairs in addition to teaching them music theory and instrument lessons,” Feder said. Key Largo native and current Florida State University senior Ryan Raines, knows firsthand how beneficial the support of ICE is. After graduating in 2013, Raines applied for and received various scholarships from ICE to pursue his degree in jazz drumming. This past summer ICE helped fund the software program he needed for producing his music, a helping hand that Raines says was huge. “It added more features, ran smoother, and gave me unlimited tracks to add layers and depth to my music,” Raines said. In the past, Raines, like many other local kids, had been very active with ICE and its productions. He would volunteer to help ICE put on the Bay Jam and Bay Jamma concerts. “I learned from Dave how to run live sound. ICE is the only organization in the Keys that I know doing real industry stuff,” said Raines. “They would put me in charge of at least one thing each set, and that involvement gave me confidence that I could do this type of work.” Raines said ICE is all about professionalism, doing your best, challenging yourself, and taking pride in your work. He credits the organization as a major influence in his career decisions. While the bands typically steal the show at the Baygrass Bluegrass festival, it’s the unsung heroes behind the scenes who have been tirelessly working to put on a memorable concert. NYAD TO GIVE KEYNOTE AT CHAMPIONSHIP

itting on a hilltop watching a flag football game in 1978 started Diane Beruldsen’s love for the game. Beruldsen is the founder and president of International Women’s Flag Football Association and the 26th annual Kelly McGillis Classic football championship happening Jan. 23 through Jan. 30 in Key West. With 20 teams of women and girls from around the world, and 10 local teams, Beruldsen traveled to local schools to recruit interested fourth and fifth graders for the event. In 2001, there were 48 teams. “When I coach these girls, that’s when you see the magic happen,” she said. “I am particularly thankful to the local principals who let me come and make a presentation.” The event is named for and endorsed by Kelly McGillis, the actress and former Key West resident who starred in "Top Gun" and "Witness.” Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad, who became the first person to swim from Cuba to the Keys without a shark cage, will deliver the event's keynote address and serve as grand marshal of the parade on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m. from La Te Da in Key West. Other speakers include historian Carol Wynne, a specialist on the heritage of indigenous women in the United States.

aristo Donald at The Coffee Loft is not only a master of craft espresso coffee creations but also an impressive craftsman of glass art. Known as borosilicate, the glass blowing and lamp working focuses on fine details. "We should be starting classes in the near future," he said. "I love working here because this is such a creative environment." When he isn't helping set up pottery painting and other crafts, he can be found in the upstairs coffee loft making drinkable art, like his favorite, the iced espresso breve. Made with scalded milk with foam floated over two shots of espresso with local honey over ice, he says it's one of the most popular drinks at the loft. "All of our coffee is made from gourmet roasted Kaldi's beans flown in from St. Louis," he said. "It makes for the best espresso based drinks." Moving from Minnesota to Sarasota for college, Donald and his girlfriend came to Marathon so she could work with dolphins at Dolphin Research Center. When they aren't working, they enjoy hanging out with friends and their dog Bowser.

rom the Upper Keys to Key West, dozens took part in the Wounded Warrior project’s annual soldier ride last weekend. Starting Friday morning at the Key Largo VFW Post 10211, the ride had stops at Coral Shores High School, the Postcard Inn in Islamorada, Marathon Fire Station and the Seven Mile Bridge. On Saturday, 30 wounded soldiers in Key West rode from Boca Chica NAS down Duval and ended in Bayview Park, with cheering supporters all along the way. Commanding Officer Capt. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2011, 4.2 million Americans over the age of 12 had tried heroin at least one time, with 23 percent of those individuals becoming dependent on the substance as a result. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) just reported that there are more deaths from heroin than from gunfire. Q. Why is heroin so dangerous? Heroin is incredibly addictive, it’s cheap and relatively easy to obtain. Addicts come in all shapes and sizes and all walks of life, wealthy, poor, homeless, parents, children. Addiction knows no bounds. One of the most dangerous things is that no one really knows what is mixed in with the heroin they buy. Ingredients can vary wildly. Some batches are more “pure” than others. Some heroin even has strychnine, a toxic substance used as a pesticide, mixed in with it. In addition to the unknown ingredients, heroin is dangerous because it interferes with the area of the brain that controls auto-functioning, such as breathing and reaction time. When combined with other consciousnessaltering substances like alcohol, the effects can be deadly that much more quickly. Q. What draws people to use heroin? People use heroin for any number of reasons, sometimes pain relief, other times for the fun of the high. Often people begin their drug addiction through the use of prescription medications, after an accident, surgery or some disease. When their physician stops prescribing the medication or they cannot afford to buy the prescription medication, they turn to the much cheaper heroin as a substitute. Pain medications such as oxycontin or oxycodone have properties similar to heroin. Heroin is known to cause an initial rush of euphoria, making the user feel happy, even euphoric. As the drug leaves the system, this is replaced by anxiety, restlessness and even depression. Each time a person uses heroin, more of the drug must be used to achieve the same “high.”

4 - Of the 32 deaths in Monroe County from January to June of 2016, four persons had the presence of heroin in their system plus other drugs such as cocaine and fentanyl. All of them were labeled accidental deaths. Data for the second half of 2016 is not available. 11 - Of the 32 deaths in Monroe County from January to June of 2016, eleven persons had the presence of other opiates in their system such as oxycodone, morphine, codeine and fentanyl. All but one were labeled accidental. 59 - The number of times Narcan was administered by Marathon EMS professionals during 2016. Narcan is given to patients who are overdosing. 43 - The number of times Narcan was administered by Monroe County EMS professionals during only five months of 2016. Data for the full year was not available. In comparison, only 41 doses were administered for the entire year of 2015, and 34 doses in 2014.
Q. How does heroin affect the brain? Heroin addiction is one of the hardest addictions to beat. Relapse is common because the drug actually changes your brain. Once heroin enters the brain, it is converted back to morphine, a powerful drug used primarily to block pain. The morphine then binds to existing opioid receptors in the brain, which causes the feeling of pain relief and euphoria at 10 times the normal dopamine levels. By exposing your body to increased levels of dopamine, your body adjusts and builds a tolerance. The result is a lower pain threshold. Some studies have shown that these changes can occur after a single dose of heroin, resulting in the user “needing” more and more heroin just to feel “normal.” I once heard a physician/researcher explain that heroin works in the same area of the brain that controls breathing and heartbeats. He explained that heroin becomes as important as breathing. Once addicted, your body believes you must have heroin in order to live — just like breathing. This makes it incredibly difficult to stop using. Q. How is heroin addiction treated? To begin tackling heroin addiction, both the physical and psychological must be addressed. Thankfully, a wide range of behavioral modification methods exist to address primarily the psychological aspect of heroin addiction. These include traditional detox programs, counseling, and behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, coping and skills training, and support group participation. No such thing as privacy… sorry about that! Privacy is a major concern for all of us in this (Too Much) Information Age. The amount of information created by humankind on a daily basis grows exponentially with each passing year. We do more and more business online every day, from banking to insurance to paying bills to shopping for that one-of-a-kind-I’ve-just-got-to-have-itvintage-1960s-Charlie-Brown-lunchbox that you just found on eBay. Even if you try not to do any business online, it’s likely that the companies you do business with do. Your name, address, Social Security number, bank account and credit card numbers, height, weight, and all the websites you’ve visited for the past 15 years are all part of corporate databases that are accessible from computers online. Just type in the correct username and password, and Presto! More information than you ever thought you’d need. There are some developments in the privacy arena that bear watching by anyone concerned with things like identity theft. When many of us were growing up, the concept of identity theft was more akin to the agents from Mission: Impossible who wore those rubber masks and infiltrated the evil villains’ headquarters. Every computer has its own unique ID tag called an IP (Internet Protocol) number. So do all the major (and minor) search engines, as well as so many other online trackers. What’s even more disturbing? Go to Google maps and try the Street View. It’s somewhat amazing and rather disquieting to see your own house up close and personal, knowing that the same view is available to anyone in the world with a computer and an online connection. An article by Brian Cooper published on the Consumer Electronics Net website highlights privacy concerns raised by the invasive nature of Google’s Street View. It seems that certain Street View teams have violated people’s privacy by actually driving down clearly marked and often gated private roads and onto people’s driveways (!) in order to get photos of private residences. Many of these Street View photos showed recognizable faces and readable license plates. Several privacy violation cases are already in court, with likely dozens or hundreds more to follow. Even the U.S. military has asked Google to remove images of bases the Street View teams have taken, stating that these are potential violations of national security. So what’s a person to do? I’m reminded of a quote from the movie Buckaroo Banzai, where the protagonist said, “No matter where you go, well, there you are.” It’s just that now, everybody else knows you’re there, too.
