NUMBER OF THE WEEK
The year of Lama Drukpa Kunley’s death in the country of Bhutan, sandwiched between India and China. He is the origin of the popularity of the symbolic phallus painted on almost everything in that country. Kunley’s organ, as painted, is called the “Thunderbolt of Flaming Wisdom,” and is said to promote fertility and also drive away evil spirits. True story. Look it up.

arlier this month, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced that the Monroe County osprey population is no longer considered a Species of Special Concern. While that’s good news in some quarters, not everyone agrees. Shylyn Pierce, Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation manager, said Monroe County was singled out because while osprey are found year-round in Florida as either nesting or migrating, there is a non-migratory population found exclusively in southern coastal Florida. While the decrease in population is unclear, Pierce said it could be due to a number of factors including water quality, mercury and hurricanes affecting nesting sites.
Pierce says ospreys are unique nesters, as they require platforms on high, free-standing structures like utility poles, cell towers, billboards, and man-made poles. “Examples can be seen along the stretch on the northbound side, across the street from Postcard Inn, and in the median in Key Largo, near MM 97,” she said. “Following Hurricane Irma, we received several calls regarding such nest sites that had been damaged or destroyed.” Kelly Grinter of the Marathon Wild Bird Center is also ambivalent. “It’s funny you should ask. Do I think the population is healthy? Yes and no,” she said. “It seems like they are going strong, but with so many platforms down, it’s hard to tell. I am seeing a lot more eagles, though.” The Marathon Wild Bird Center currently has one caged osprey. Oliver has been a fixture at the center for 18 years.
ON THE COVER Middle School students at Treasure Village Montessori spent weeks and even months preparing their research projects for the Jan. 16 Science Fair. As judges arrived, students took to the classrooms to set up their boards and prepare their speech of what their projects yielded. There were projects of a wide variety. The Weekly stepped foot into a classroom full of students who presented their aquatic projects. See keysweekly.com for more. JIM/McCARTHY/Keys Weekly
While some osprey nesting platforms have been repaired, others were completely gone, and new nest sites were built nearby. Pierce said over the course of the last year, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center has been thrilled to see that not only were the nest sites being used, but quite a few pairs of osprey built their own nests on previously unused sites. In terms of rehabilitation, in 2016 the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center received 17 osprey. In 2017, the center took in 14 osprey, and in 2018 that number went down to 11. “The number of juveniles we’ve received has decreased, which in theory means that local pairs are producing healthier clutches and nesting sites have stabilized,” she said. “Our main causes for admission in regards to osprey are vehicle collision and powerline collision. Hopefully by encouraging people to not only be alert while on the road, but also call us in any case of suspected collision so we may act quickly and efficiently, we can get our intake numbers down even further.” The FWC also removed the harlequin darter, Homosassa shrew, and southern fox squirrel from the Species of Special Concern. Two species of alligator snapping turtles are no longer listed, but the Suwannee alligator snapping turtle will now be listed as State Threatened. The new listing status for these species took effect Dec. 23, 2018. — Sara Matthis contributed to this report.

P
olitician George Allen began advocating for a road to the Keys in 1895. In 1908, residents of Monroe County (and especially Upper Keys farmers) began clamoring for a better road system on the islands. With the arrival of Henry Flagler’s train, life in the Keys began transitioning away from being a boat culture. Farmers needed better roads to move their crops from their fields to the packing houses becoming established near the railroad. In 1922, Monroe County officials allocated $300,000 for road projects, including a road from North Key Largo’s exclusive Anglers Club to the Key Largo train depot, once located near Mile Marker 105.5. Also built was a road that paralleled the railway south to Upper Matecumbe Key and projects on the Lower Keys and Key West. In 1926, Monroe County issued a $2.5 million bond for further road projects. That would create State Road 4A, also known as the first incarnation of the Overseas Highway. J. Otto Kirchheiner, chairman of the Monroe County Commission, is credited as the first person to traverse the highway via automobile, leaving Key West for the mainland, July 18, 1927. State Road 4A officially opened to public traffic on Jan. 25, 1928. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

BEAUTIFUL BAKER’S I Resort brings relaxation back JIM McCARTHY

n Key Largo, a resort is ready to showcase a reinvigorated look and relaxing feel. Following damage sustained due to Hurricane Irma, Baker’s Cay Key Largo, part of Curio Collection by Hilton, is planning to reopen Sunday, Jan. 27. Actual bookings will begin Feb. 14. “We are very excited to welcome everyone back,” General Manager Joy Boyd told the Weekly in a recent interview. “The property has a lot of history. It’s definitely a homecoming for staff and a lot of our guests.” Combining tropical adventure with relaxation, the resort sits on 13 acres and was once a pineapple plantation owned by Capt. Ben Baker. One of the big selling points at Baker’s Cay is the view each of the 200 rooms has to offer. Boyd said guests are surrounded by nature the moment they step onto the property. “It’s definitely part of an enormous, lush, secluded region of Key Largo that really emphasizes natural beauty we have down here,” Boyd said. “We’ve got beaches and areas that are quiet and secluded to plop down.” The amenities include two pools, a spa called Green House, a number of food and beverage outlets, and the signature dining outlet Calusa Dining, which is led by Executive Chef Andy Papson and features Cajun-Caribbeaninspired cuisine. There’s also live music and fire pits that complement the beach atmosphere found at Dry Rocks, the seaside hideaway for guests to enjoy a drink and revel in late-night fishing tales.

Along with outdoor activities, the resort has programming for all ages. It is partnering with organizations like Coral Restoration Foundation to discuss reef rehabilitation efforts and Dolphins Plus to discuss training and rehabbing animals. With a commitment to the environment, Baker’s Cay Resort is carrying out eco-waste efforts through various reuse and recycle initiatives. As of March 2018, the property was the first resort in the Keys to commit to Reef Relief’s “Skip the Straw” campaign, eliminating the use of single plastic straws on-site. BIG KAHUNA
UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / JANUARY 24, 2019 JIM McCARTHY
jim@keysweekly.com
KAHUNA
CONTESTANTS
Fundraising efforts are underway as four contestants vie for the ultimate prize of a heavy Big Kahuna trophy. It’s all for a good cause, as funds raised through March 13 will go to support the Good Health Clinic and its mission to provide health care to low-income and uninsured residents in the Keys. Contestants were nominated and invited to participate in Big Kahuna based on their relationship with the community, upstanding citizenship and capacity to raise money. The fundraising frenzy usually brings in 20 percent to 25 percent of the clinic’s operating funds. When March 16 comes, a Big Kahuna will be crowned at Islander Resort.
ALINA DAVIS
Alina Davis has eagerly entered the Big Kahuna contest and has enlisted past Big Kahuna winner Capt. Skip Bradeen as her campaign manager. Davis is a Realtor in the Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate Co.’s Islamorada office and loves her job. “There’s nothing better than helping people achieve their dreams of owning a home in the Keys or helping them sell so that they can enjoy their next adventure,” she said. Raising money for charitable causes is not new for Davis; she is involved with the Coldwell Banker Schmitt Charitable Foundation and the Herman Lucerne Memorial Fishing Tournament. “I’m looking forward to this contest and to the friendly competition. It’s a big win for the community no matter who wins,” Davis said. “But that trophy would look great at our office. We are coordinating some fun events including Paint Night to bring more attention to the great work done by the Good Health Clinic, which is the only free clinic providing essential medical care to uninsured and low-income residents in the Keys.”
TOM MORRISON
Thomas Morrison is medical director at Mariners Hospital Emergency Department and Fishermen’s Hospital. Raised in the South Miami area, he attended undergraduate and graduate school at a medical school in Ohio. He then went to New Orleans for surgical internship /residency. Morrison returned to Miami for a second internship and residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Family Medicine Program. He was hospitalist at Jackson South Community Hospital and ER doctor at South Miami and Homestead hospitals. “When Kate Banick asked me to become a ‘Kahuna’ I was honored to accept,” Morrison said. “I have personally seen Good Health Clinic help and save patients as they come through my emergency departments. Health care is unaffordable on the best of days. When you are a server, clerk, bartender, landscaper and assistant chef — health insurance isn’t available. Eventually they will need help; this is where the Good Health Clinic steps in.” On Saturday, Feb. 2, there will be a Casino Night fundraiser at Lions Club, located at 5 Homestead Ave., in Key Largo. Doors open at 6 p.m. with games starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. Prizes will be announced at 9:45 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include food by Sea Creatures Café and games featuring roulette, blackjack, craps and slots. Dealers will be on hand to teach people how to play.
WALT STEPHENS
Walt Stephens is the director of safety loss control and procurement at Florida Keys Electric Cooperative (FKEC). He is originally from Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, and has worked in the electric utility industry since 1993. He has worked at a rural electric cooperative since 1998 where he has been responsible for safety, loss control, risk management and procurement. Stephens is certified by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Associations as a loss control professional. He has been a resident of Islamorada and employed at FKEC for three years. His hobbies include fishing, boating and golf. Stephens is a member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club and a graduate of Leadership Monroe County. When asked to help raise funds for the Good Health Clinic, he was more than willing. “The Good Health Clinic is a great asset to our community,” he said, “by improving and at times saving lives through health care with diagnosis, treatment and prevention.” On Saturday, Feb. 9 at Islamorada Beer, there will be a corn hole tournament and party. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $20. Party includes 50/50s, food, prize drawings and raffle.
KEYS WEEKLY
Keys Weekly is vying for Big Kahuna with the intent to bring that mighty fine and mighty heavy trophy currently sitting at Florida Keys Electric Cooperative to its Tavernier office. The Weekly team includes the brains behind the operation, Jason Koler; the Energizer Bunny in Nola Acker; the second-best candidate when the Weekly hired him, Jim McCarthy; the photography guru Doug Finger, and “Go Fish!” Capt. Matt Bellinger. When not working, McCarthy pretends to lift at Mariners and drinks all the Bud Light at Mar Bar, Nola is that Avenger who teleports from Islamorada and Key Largo, Doug can be found snapping all the good action and Matt can be found on the water or on the radio doing fish reports or calling out terrible drivers. As for Jason, he can be found causing a ruckus on the Weekly golf cart outside the homes of Rob Stober and Capt. Bryan. “Winning that Big Kahuna trophy is something we’ve always dreamed about,” the Keys Weekly team said. “Not are we only looking forward to coming out on top, but we’re also excited to be raising funds to support the Good Health Clinic’s mission.” On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Weekly will have a lionfish fry in partnership with Coastal Realty and Islamorada Dive Center. The event will be held at Coastal Realty from 1 to 4 p.m. Islamorada Beer Company will be donating the beer to the function. There will be a raffle for a golf cart thanks to Riva. Lionfish jewelry will also be at the event for purchase. All proceeds go to benefit the Good Health Clinic.

KEYS QUILTING Club meets a challenge AUDREY LEEBERG www.keysweekly.com
W
ith approximately 50 people, more than half of Florida Keys Quilters members are snowbirds. The diversity that this brings to the group is significant, as demonstrated by Marcia Swain. She is a member of the FKQ and of the Sew Blessed Quilt Guild in Hendersonville, N.C., which is supported by the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville. That North Carolina group had far more odds and ends of outdated, donated fabric than it could use, and Marcia volunteered to bring a good deal of it to us here in Florida. There was one condition. The fabric had to be used for charity quilts only. The Florida Keys Quilters are known throughout the Upper Keys for their generosity of talent and treasure. Swain organized the fabrics into bundles that worked well together and hauled them down south. Those packets were offered to the FKQ members who wanted to participate in what became known as making a challenge quilt. The challenge was that this donated material was not made up of today’s popular patterns and colors, yet the resulting quilts needed to be attractive and desirable.
More than 21 packets were taken home by members of the FKQ guild last winter, with the understanding that the finished products would be due at the guild’s January 2019 meeting. The quilts which resulted from that abandoned and rejected fabric are hanging in the community room of the Key Largo Library through the end of January for all to view. They are astoundingly lovely. Please come to the library and check them out. The Florida Keys Quilters meet the first Saturday every month. Those who are interested in the needle arts are welcome to come to a meeting and say hello. You will meet people who have never sewn before as well as very talented and experienced quilters. Members of the group also gather at the Key Largo Library on most Friday mornings for “sit and sew,” which is an informal group of folks who encourage each other and share ideas as well as conversation. There is also a “sit and sew” which meets on Wednesday mornings at the library in Islamorada. All “needlers” are welcome. Audrey Leeberg is publicity chair for Florida Keys Quilters.

A group of seven magnificent helpers took part in a Coastal Cleanup event held Jan. 12 at the Plantation Hammock Preserve. Sponsored by the Islamorada Youth Council, the group included two Monroe County Health Department employees, Eva Koras and Fitima Garcia. The group did some serious detail cleaning on the shoreline. The youth council has taken initiative, year after year, to keep the park clean. With Hurricane Irma’s help clearing out years of ocean pollution, the crew was able to focus on small pieces of plastic, Styrofoam, bottle caps and lots of shoes.

HOUSING HELP Habitat homes filling large need
J
ack Niedbalski is looking forward to the day when 16 new homeowners get their keys at “Habitat at Windley Point.” Once a two- to three-home-a-year build program, the Upper Keys Habitat affiliate has begun constructing 21 homes in 24 months. Habitat at Windley Key, which is on U.S. 1 directly oceanside to the Oceanview Inn and north of Theater of the Sea, is on its way as work continues toward getting first floors poured with concrete. The 16 townhousestyle units will have two bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. In addition, planning work continues to construct a duplex and two single-family units at “Habitat Keys Heights/ Esslinger Corner” in Islamorada, providing four homes for families in need. Habitat also broke ground earlier this year on a singlefamily residence near MM 99 Oceanside. Niedbalski, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys, said the home should be finished later this summer. The family selection process is underway. Affordable housing continues to be at a critical state. As to the homes that Habitat’s building, anyone who’s qualified can apply. To qualify, people have to be first-time homebuyers who work in Monroe County, meet income levels, be in need and agree to put in “sweat equity” with Habitat. Total household income cannot exceed 80 percent of the county median income. Top left: Upper Keys Habitat affiliate has begun constructing 21 homes in 24 months. “Our homeownership opportunities are really restricted to the working class in the Upper Keys,” Niedbalski said. “Fundamentally, we’re in the business to help people get a shot at the American dream. Nobody gets anything for free with Habitat. The 30-year interest–free mortgage is just a really good deal.” Since its inception, Habitat of the Upper Keys has built 33 homes purchased by families. In 2017, Habitat embarked on a campaign to “ Build 50.” One of the notable builds completed last year was Mandalay, a sevenhome project in Key Largo. This year, Habitat at Windley Point will be its biggest project ever. Along with the units, a 2,000-square-foot commercial building will also be constructed, with use still to be determined. Habitat of the Upper Keys doesn’t receive funding from Habitat for Humanity International for building new homes. All donations raised stay local in the Upper Keys and are appreciated to help keep the Keys economy strong by building homes for deserving families in need Time, talents and donations from the community are needed to build these homes. Habitat of the Upper Keys is always looking for volunteers. Those interested can call Niedbalski at 305-453-0050. “We all know what a great community this is,” Niedbalski said. “It’s sometimes humbling how generous people want to be, and it’s not necessarily money but their time and talents.” More information is at habitatupperkeys. org.

ENVIRONMENT
UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / JANUARY 24, 2019
Keys react to DeSantis’ water plans apt. Xavier Figueredo is very pleased with Florida’s new governor, straight out of the gate. “Gov. Ron DeSantis hit the ground with both feet running,” said Figueredo, a Florida Bay Forever board member. “The promises he made on the day after inauguration are incredible. In fact, that the Everglades is one of the first things he’s talked about is encouraging.” Gov. DeSantis was sworn in on Jan. 8. On Jan. 10, he released a five-point plan for major water-quality reform in Florida. And on the same day, he asked for the resignations of the 11-member board of the South Florida Water Management District. “He’s made the environment a priority, and that’s obviously a huge priority of mine,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein. “I think everybody should be encouraged by his stance, but I also want people to understand that we are not going to flip a switch (and reverse damage to the Everglades). We have to have reasonable expectations.” By his actions, however, DeSantis has made it clear to Florida that this is a pressing concern. “That’s why … I am taking immediate action to combat the threats which have devastated our local economies and threatened the health of our communities,” DeSantis said in a statement.
SARA MATTHIS
sara@keysweekly.com
The executive order calls for: • $2.5 billion over the next four years for Everglades restoration and protection of water resources. • Establishment of a Blue-Green Algae Task Force charged with expediting progress. • Instruction to the South Florida Water Management District to begin work immediately on the Everglades Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir Project. • The creation of the Office of Environmental Accountability and Transparency, charged with integrating scientific research and analysis to ensure all agency actions are on the same page. • The appointment of a chief science officer to coordinate and prioritize scientific data, research, monitoring and analysis with Florida’s most pressing problems. Raschein said the appointment of a chief science officer is critical. RASCHEIN IN UNIQUE POSITION TO HELP With her current committee assignments, state Rep. Holly Raschein said she’s uniquely situated to assist important water quality measures that affect the Keys. Most important, perhaps, is as chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee. “That’s significant because all of the funding for programs like the Stewardship Act, Florida Forever, the FWC’s budget and the Water Management District comes through that subcommittee,” she said. In addition, she is vice chair on the same panel’s policy board. She is also a member of the appropriations, joint administrative procedures, rules and state affairs committees.
“With a scientific solution in place, it removes party politics. We need to follow the science and get the right solution and funding in place as quickly as possible,” she said. The order addresses other details, like expediting the work on the C-44 and C-43 reservoirs, both key Everglades projects, and taking action to adamantly oppose all off-shore oil and gas activities and hydraulic fracturing in Florida. Insiders say the new SFWMD board is in response to a November 2018 vote, just days after the election, to extend the lease of a parcel where the largest reservoir in Florida is set to be built. DeSantis sent an envoy — U.S. Rep. Brian Mast — to the meeting to ask the board to delay the vote. They didn’t. Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg was one of the first to protest the SFWMD actions and applaud DeSantis’ commitment to not only starting the Everglades restoration project, but finishing key portions of it early, including the estimated $1.5 billion reservoir just south of Lake Okeechobee. “After decades of delay, Gov. DeSantis has today placed Florida on a trajectory to complete the EAA Reservoir, not in 10 years, but in four,” Eikenberg said. “He has clearly heard the cries of Floridians who have had enough of perennial algae outbreaks, and to scientists and engineers who confirm that construction of the reservoir will reduce algae-causing Lake Okeechobee discharges by more than half. We applaud him for directing the state’s resources to immediately commence design of the reservoir, with construction to begin on schedule.”

REALLY GROOVY GARDENS!
Walk showcases spectacular plantings CHARLES FULCO
I
www.keysweekly.com
n mid-February, the Garden Club of the Upper Keys will present “Really Groovy Gardens,” a walking/driving tour showcasing five local homeowners’ spectacular plantings and landscaping. All the gardens are conveniently located on Plantation Key, some right down the road from each other. In addition, a tea party, art show and garden market with vendors will be held in Key Largo at the Frances Tracy Garden Center, MM 94, bayside. On Jan. 17, a small group of the club’s officers and I had the opportunity to preview five of the homeowners’ properties. We were impressed not only at the variety of the plantings, but with the owners themselves, each having interesting stories of how their houses and gardens came to be. While the hosts had widely varied backgrounds and careers, the bond among them was their love of botanicals and the history behind the different plants each owner was showcasing. Mark Gregg, a sixth-generation descendant of the Pinder family, showed us his Living History Grove (featuring a Key lime miniorchard), explaining how the Key lime originated as a cross between the Persian lime and the Calamondin fruit. Happily, his trees were in bloom and attracting a variety of pollinators, including monarchs and honeybees, which unfortunately are in short supply in the Keys after Irma. Johnny Brush Pinder was an original homesteader, and his family is still a thriving part of the Keys community; it was obvious from his talk and his flourishing property that he knows he is part of local history and does his best to preserve and display it to the public. The next stop was Indian Mound, with a natural hammock surrounding an original 1942 house, with a gorgeous large main house, patio, pool and dock. A chicken coop, fruit trees and myriad native landscape ornamentals surrounded us in the backyard, with shoreline trees framing the dock.

We were greeted by Rich Brown on the third house of our tour, who owns Brown and Crebbin, a local landscape design company. He specializes in Balinese architecture, which was evident upon seeing his backyard, replete with statuary, orchids growing along the fencing, Burle Marx philodendron, and a cozy, South-Seas patio with stone hot tub, an enclosed bar area, and of course a tiki hut. This is the place you want to be to relax amid lush, exotic vegetation on all sides. Adjacent to Brown’s home is a property that would feel at home in Santa Fe or Tuscany. A profusion of large Crotons greeted us at the entrance, “iguana resistant” plantings that many homeowners could benefit from, according to Andrea, our host, who is a talented graphic designer. Vividly colorful Monkey Bottlebrush ornamentals immediately caught my eye on the way to the compact yet ornamental and shady back yards, a perfect place to host an outdoor gathering.

Our last stop was at South Coconut Palm, where two tall, silvery Bismarck Palms framed the entrance to the house. The kidney-shaped pool surrounded by buttonwoods in the rear complemented the whimsical bar area, with mile marker signs to all over pairing with a one-of-a-kind mirrored mural created by one of the homeowners. Come support the vendors at The Garden Club of the Upper Keys (MM 94, Bayside), just north of the wild bird sanctuary. It comprises almost two acres of native hammock given to the club by Dr. Frederick Bond, in memory of “Angel of the Keys” Frances Tracy, who in the 1940s offered virtually the only medical services available in the Upper Keys. Want a reason to join the Club? “How about friendship and companionship with people who can help you with any plant issues,” said Beverly Middleton, Garden Walk chairman. “We learn from one another, have great speakers taking on all sorts of subjects, networking of knowledgeable folks, and joy-based gardeners. They try to share their bright bounty with everyone.” The “Really Groovy Gardens” event will be held Saturday, Feb.16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Plantation Key (gardens tour) and Key Largo (tea party/art show/garden market), rain or shine. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 the day of show; they are available at the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, MM 106; Key Largo Florist, MM 99; Wear With All Boutique, MM 101; Islamorada Chamber of Commerce, MM 86; and Wild Lily Boutique, MM 82. More information is at www.gardenclubupperkeys.org and upperkeysgardenwalk@gmail. com Charles Fulco is a science teacher and a NASA Solar Sytem Ambassador.
The hosts have widely varied backgrounds and careers, sharing a love of botanicals and the history behind the different plants.

mainstay since the early 1980s, Fish House in Key Largo is bringing the day’s catch from the boat to the plates of hungry patrons. For owner Phil Weydener, fresh seafood is first and foremost. “We buy our seafood products directly from fishermen. They bring products right in our rear gate,” he said. “We weigh it up with a big scale we have downstairs. Then we process it ourselves.” Weydener says all the fish is filleted on the premises. The restaurant also does its own smoking. “Most other restaurants, it’s processed through a fishery,” he said. “They buy fish already filleted. Once you fillet fish, the lifetime that you can keep the product is diminished.” A Marine veteran, Weydener came to the Keys after leaving the service. His family meanwhile sold its Stuart construction business. “We were deciding what to do, and then the biggest vote was to go to the Keys. We were looking at restaurants and stumbled across this one,” he said. “I had to convince the previous owner to sell it.”
Coming in for lunch or dinner, patrons can start off with one of many appetizers such as Buffalo fried shrimp, crab cake, ceviche and crabmeat-stuffed mushroom caps. For lunch or dinner, try one of several entrees, including a favorite in the house specialty Matecumbe that’s topped with fresh tomatoes, shallots, fresh basil, capers, olive oil and lemon juice then baked. The fish dish is so popular that it’s attracted the likes of Guy Fieri and Bobby Flay. Weydener notes that it’s a Fish House original. Fish House also has a vast selection of salads, sandwiches and common fish of the Keys. With some beer or a glass of wine, enjoy a meal in the fun and high-energy atmosphere. Weydener says the service is second to none with a server and an assistant server. As for the food, Weydener says fish brought in from the ocean to the restaurant and to the plate doesn’t get any fresher. “That’s our trademark,” he said. “It comes from the boat to here.” Fish House is located at 102401 Overseas Highway.

Christopher Elwell “I think the design is just perfect for this unique development. The buyers will be the ones enjoying an inside and outside lifestyle to include boating, swimming, and relaxing at the end of a long, fun day. The interior design will allow them to be very proud of their interior design, yet feel casual enough to relax and put their feet up when need be.”
The Most Exclusive Luxury Properties in The Florida Keys
I
n a place renowned for its luxurious vacation homes, the developers of The Reserve at Sombrero Beach have upped the ante by requesting the services of esteemed designer, Christopher Elwell, owner of Royal Furniture and Design.
With his extensive background dating back to 1990, Elwell has designed, remodeled, and repositioned thousands of homes throughout the Florida Keys, Key West and the country. Known for his can-do attitude and amazing attention to detail, Christopher has been a long sought- after designer for owners looking for a visionary’s touch. Mr. Elwell was tasked with not only the interior design but identifying “the vision” for the Elysium Residence, located at 449 Sombrero Beach Rd; the first Estate Villa being offered at The Reserve. (“Elysium”) meaning Paradise and the tone setter for Elwell’s vision, Christopher explains, “by choosing a ‘Coastal Chic’ design, I thought ‘you’re in paradise’ and I want you to feel that, not only outside your home, but also continue that feeling inside. We are bringing the outside in and taking advantage of the amazing views of the water and the lush landscaping.” When you pull up to The Reserve at Sombrero Beach, the developers want you to expect something spectacular. The furniture, all selected by Royal Furniture and Design, is a mixture of upholstered fabric pieces, distressed woods in multiple finishes and some brushed metal accents. It feels very coastal chic, elegant, yet comfortable. Elwell says, “I think the design is just perfect for this unique development. The buyers will be the ones enjoying an inside and outside lifestyle to include boating, swimming, and relaxing at the end of a long, fun day. The interior will allow them to be very proud of their interior design, yet feel casual enough to relax and put their feet up when need be. The coastal chic décor will make them feel comfortable and relaxed whether they are entertaining friends or using the home themselves.” The developer of The Reserve declares, “We are very excited to have Chris working on the Elysium Residence and know how extremely talented he is at walking into a completely empty room and transforming it into a great livable space. Given his background with homes in the Keys, we knew he would be a perfect fit, and would be able to give our clients exactly the comfort and aesthetic level they are looking for when buying in the Keys.”

Admission is free. An introduction and rules to the sport will be discussed along with demonstrations and drills. Refreshments will also be available as well as time to play. People of all ages are encouraged to come out. “This event is basically to promote the sport of pickleball and to let the community know we have the courts out here,” Bagiotti said. More information is available from Founders Park at 305853-1685.
PICKELBALL FOR ALL New courts at Founders
I
t’s a sport that continues to grow across the country. With pickleball’s popularity soaring, there’s a spot in Islamorada with several courts to play. At Founders Park, the main pickleball court has been resurfaced. In addition, the basketball court saw lining work to bring two more pickleball courts to the park. “The original pickleball court we put in three years ago. That’s when the sport was kind of getting popular,” said Maria Bagiotti, Founders Park director. “We now have three courts, and we want to get the word out to the community.” Pickleball, a mashup of tennis, ping-pong and badminton, is for all ages and ability levels. The rules are simple and the game isn’t hard for beginners. For some, it can become

Bagiotti said when the Parks and Recreational Advisory Committee had meetings, residents came out and expressed the need for more courts. MARINERS INTRODUCES NEW TECHNOLOGY Mariners Hospital has added another promising new machine to its arsenal of advanced technologies: Through the generosity of donors – primarily those who supported the hospital’s 2018 Bougainvillea Ball – the single-photon emission computed tomography, or SPECT/CT, is now offered at the facility. Considered a game changer in stroke care, SPECT/ CT – representing single-photon emission computed to-
mography fused with computed tomography – can more clearly identify problems such as tumors, brain injuries and spinal fractures. In stroke care, the fine image detail shows how blood flows through arteries and veins in the brain and reveals blood-deprived areas following a stroke. It’s another step in Mariners Hospital’s quest to become an accredited stroke center.

or years, the Original Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen restaurant has been letting patrons sign money and put it in the ceiling for everyone to see. Same with the car tags on the walls, signed by visitors from around the world. Recently, the restaurant decided to donate the money to the Key Largo Lions Club to help those in need. The club removed all of the money, and Chris Sante, Key Largo Lions Club president, noted these highlights: $2,175 in U.S. currency, $5,500 in Canadian currency and one Disney Dollar. In addition, money from around the world was collected, including the Bahamas, India, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Honduras, Cayman, South Africa, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Guatemala, Egypt, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Thailand, Singapore, Scotland, State of Jersey, France, Qatar, Peru, Budapest, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Belize, Vietnam, Argentina, Brazil, Isle of Man, Bahrain, Germany, Bermuda, Denmark, Cuba, Kenya, Venezuela, Jamaica, Philippines, Poland, Israel and more. Like all charities, the club relies on donations to help the community. Sante said the club is grateful for people and business like Mrs. Mac’s that support its efforts. —Contributed

My plans are to attend a fouryear university and travel while having fun. What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I hope to be remembered as the girl who anyone could go to for help, support and friendship. What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I enjoy reading a great book series outside and enjoying the views.
