SCHOOL BOARD DENIES $4 MILLION STADIUM PRICE HIKE

Restroom & concession building would have cost double the initial estimate

MANDY MILES

mandy@keysweekly.com

The school board this month pressed pause on a $4 million price increase that would have put the cost of Key West High School’s new football stadium and baseball complex at nearly $24 million.

In March, the board had expected to approve a $2 million change order for a new restroom and concession building, but instead was hit with a $4 million spike in the price.

Postponing their decision until the April 9 meeting in Key West, the board ultimately voted 3-2 to deny the change order, citing various concerns about the lack of specificity in the initial estimates submitted by Ajax Building Co., which has built several Monroe County schools and facilities.

“Maybe they’re just getting too comfortable with us,” board member John Dick said at the meeting.

Board chair Mindy Conn added, “I’m not comfortable saying we’re going to rubber-stamp a $4 million project.”

She questioned Pat Lefere, the school district’s director of planning and operations, about who was in charge of approving, line by line, cost estimates for multimillion-dollar construction projects.

“I’m assuming we have someone whose job it is to notice that estimates don’t include things like site work, concrete and masonry,” said Conn, who has butted heads with Lefere over aspects of the stadium design.

Lefere said his team is charged with reviewing such estimates, but added that Ajax had not submitted a detailed estimate that would have

enabled Lefere’s team to notice the omissions until the design phase was already 75% complete.

Board member Darren Horan, who joined Conn and Dick in denying the change order, has suggested that the district rebid the portion of the project that Ajax is saying would cost $4 million.

“I think it’d be the best bang for our buck to see if someone else can come in and we can see what they can do for $4 million or less,” Horan said.

With the denial of the change order, work will proceed at the stadium, but the future of the new concession and restroom building on the baseball side of the complex remains up in the air for now.

MCSO DEPUTY ARRESTED FOR SPYING ON HIS EX

He allegedly recorded couple having sex, police say

AMonroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home in the predawn hours of April 15 to spy on her and her new boyfriend, opening her bedroom window and shouting that he was recording them, according to Key West police.

Alexander Morales Jr., 26, of Key West, was arrested and charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief. He was arrested on April 15 and released from the county jail later that day after posting a $110,000 bond.

But four days later, on Friday, April 19, Morales was back in jail after sheriff’s office officials discovered he allegedly used his deputy status to look up information on the man dating his ex.

Three days after the alleged burglary, Morales was arrested on four felony charges of illegally using MCSO computers for unauthorized purposes. His bond for these charges was set at $100,000 and he posted it within a few hours after his arrest and was released from jail.

Key West police report that Morales arrived in his MCSO patrol car at the Eagle Avenue home of his 23-yearold ex-girlfriend around 1:30 a.m. on April 15.

A security camera reportedly captured Morales getting out of the marked MCSO vehicle and walking toward his ex’s residence. Several minutes later, he’s seen running back to the cruiser and driving off.

The woman and her boyfriend told Key West detectives they were having sex when they heard the bedroom window open. They saw a man open the window blinds and shine a light on them, states Morales’ arrest affidavit.

The couple panicked and began covering themselves with “whatever clothing they could find” as the burglar shouted he was “recording everything,” police reported.

When the burglar broke the blinds, partially lunging through the window, the woman immediately recognized

Morales and shouted at him to leave, reports state.

Moments later, Morales allegedly approached the front door of the residence and peered inside the house through the window at the top of the door. The woman told police she had the porch light on and clearly saw it was Morales.

Morales asked her to come outside, “so they could talk,” the affidavit states. She refused and called a friend for help. Morales was already gone when the friend arrived,

The only way to get to the woman’s home is through a closed gate on the property, the affidavit states.

‘You’re mad that you got caught’

It’s unclear in court records whether Morales has legal representation, and he couldn’t be immediately reached for comment on April 19.

Between 11:39 p.m. April 14 and the time of the burglary on April 15, his ex-girlfriend told police she had received six missed phone calls, including three from a blocked caller ID.

While detectives were doing a follow-up interview with the woman, she received a call from a number that had no caller ID. It was Morales, police said. On the phone, Morales began to chastise his ex for having sex, calling her “disgusting.”

She told him she didn’t know why he came into her home through the window. “I didn’t come in nowhere, I opened the window,” Morales said. “Who cares? You’re mad that you got caught.”

When asked what he did with the video recording, Morales replied, “Why do you care? … You’re disgusting,” the affidavit states.

Key West detectives recorded the call on a body-worn camera.

Morales allegedly also made a vulgar post on Snapchat about the victim’s sexual activity in which he included her full name, police said.

Key West police later arrested Morales outside his Key West home. When he saw an officer approaching, he turned around and put his hands behind his back, reports state.

On the day of the arrest, Sheriff Rick Ramsay announced that Morales was on unpaid administrative leave pending a hearing.

“I am committed to keeping this community informed of significant events that occur in this agency,” Ramsay said in a statement. The sheriff’s office Internal Affairs Division is also investigating.

FBI VISITS ISLAMORADA FOLLOWING CALLS ALLEGING BRIBES

Vice mayor says agents didn’t ask about former village manager as rumors suggest

Sharon Mahoney was tending to business inside her Islamorada flower shop on a Saturday afternoon in late January. Around three o’clock, her front doorbell rang as a young man and a woman entered her Enchanted Florist shop.

“He said, ‘Sharon Mahoney … Vice Mayor Sharon Mahoney who sits on council?’” Mahoney recalled.

To her surprise, both individuals proceeded to flash FBI badges.

The agents told Mahoney the FBI’s Tampa branch received six or seven calls from individuals who believed she had information related to council members taking bribes from the local building community. No specific names were mentioned during the visit, but the agents believed she possibly had information into the matter. The agents were told by callers to speak with the vice mayor, who was elected to the council in 2022.

“They said, ‘Whoever called us made it extremely clear you’re not involved in any way, you’re an honest person on the council, but your friends say you know something,’” Mahoney recalled.

Mahoney told the agents she knew nothing about current council members taking bribes. Following a minutes-long conversation which yielded no answer or leads, the agents left. Mahoney said she wasn’t sure if the two were actual agents, so she called Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and John Quick, village attorney, to inform them of the visit.

“She was concerned over whether they were legit agents. She was caught off guard,” said Ramsay, who wasn’t aware of the FBI’s visit until Mahoney’s call. “It didn’t sound legit to me at the time, so we put out a BOLO (be on the lookout). We never found them, so I proceeded to contact the FBI Miami field office.”

Eventually, the FBI reached out to the sheriff to confirm they were real agents. The sheriff said he didn’t ask for or receive details on the visit.

“We just wanted to know if they were legit,” Ramsay reiterated.

The next day, Mahoney received a call from the sheriff’s office informing her they were FBI agents from the Miami office. Eventually, Mahoney received a call while she was at her flower shop from the FBI agent, Scott Curley, who visited Mahoney’s business. She said a 15-minute conversation ensued as Curley asked if Mahoney had anything she’d like to say.

“I said I don’t know what you’re looking for,” Mahoney told the agent. “I know all builders; I grew up with them. I told him if anyone tries to offer me a bribe, I’ll offer you a call.”

Mahoney said she hasn’t heard from the FBI since the phone call. The FBI’s visit to Mahoney’s business earlier in the year sparked several rumors over what they were seeking. Some rumors believed the FBI’s visit to Mahoney centered around Ted Yates, former village manager who was let go by the council via a 3-2 vote last July. Mahoney, who voted not to renew a contract for Yates, told Keys Weekly the agents didn’t question her about the former village manager. Yates’ name wasn’t even mentioned in conversations she had with the agents, she said.

“His name never came up,” Mahoney said.

The Keys Weekly contacted the FBI Miami office regarding the visit and any ongoing investigation in the village. The FBI responded by stating they could not confirm nor deny the existence of investigations.

Yates was mayor of Twinsburg, Ohio before coming to Islamorada. Current Twinsburg Mayor Sam Scaffide said the city isn’t aware of any investigation into Yates.

‘I SPEAK FOR THE TREES’

Keys Weekly goes all-in with Arbor Day cleanup on April 26

mandy@keysweekly.com

“You know me, I think there ought to be a big old tree right there. And let’s give him a friend. Everybody needs a friend.” ― painter Bob Ross

The Keys Weekly will join with the city’s Keep Key West Beautiful campaign and the Key West Ploggers, who spend an hour every Friday morning removing trash, recyclables and cigarette butts from a designated area on the island. See page 24 for a summary of the cleanup activities and effectiveness.

Each weekly cleanup is hosted by a local business and the monthly schedule of locations is printed every Thursday in the Key West Weekly.

The local newspaper this week will do more than print the cleanup schedule, and will also host the Friday, April 26 cleanup along the bike path on U.S. 1 from 8 to 9 a.m.

All volunteers are welcome to join as we meet along U.S. 1, across the street from the Dions on Stock Island.

Hopefully, the garbage we remove will make way for the seeds of new trees to flourish throughout the Florida Keys. This Friday’s cleanup coincides with Arbor Day, which takes place the last Friday of April.

Since 1872, Arbor Day has celebrated trees and all they provide for the planet.

Nebraska tree advocate Julius Sterling Morton created the day after planting thousands of trees on his 160-acre property in the Nebraska Territory in the 1800s.

“He planted an apple orchard, as well as peach, plum, and pear trees, plus cottonwoods, evergreens, beeches and more,” according to Almanac.com

“Within 20 years of its creation, the holiday was celebrated in every American state except Delaware, which eventually joined in,” according to Almanac.com. “Particularly pleasing to Morton was the fact that schools across the country began celebrating Arbor Day by dedicating the trees they planted to special people.”

BANNED BOOKS, INDIE BOOKSTORES & DISTURBING READS

Emily Berg of Books & Books joins Keys Weekly’s ‘Side Tracks’ podcast

Saturday, April 27 is Independent Bookstore Day, and Books & Books at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St., will celebrate with a party during store hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We’ll have exclusive products and all kinds of fun stuff,” store manager Emily Berg said. “We’re gonna hide a golden ticket somewhere in the bookstore, and if you find it, you get 12 free audiobooks through Libro.fm.”

The bookstore bash doesn’t end at closing time.

Later that day, at 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the PEAR House, 533 Eaton St., Books & Books will host National Book Award finalist Lydia Millet, who will read from her latest, “We Loved It All: A Memory of Life.”

“It’s a series of essays that she’s written about the conflicting feelings of having children on our changing planet,” Berg said. “She’s a novelist and tends to have an environmental twist.”

Berg recently joined Keys Weekly digital editor Gwen Filosa on the Weekly’s new podcast, Key West Side Tracks, for a wide-ranging conversation.

Topics include whether audiobooks count as reading, being traumatized by the 1999 horror movie “Blair Witch Project,” the disturbing success of V.C. Andrews’ novels and banned books.

Books & Books, at the corner of Eaton and Simonton streets, keeps a permanent display of books

banned in various Florida public school districts. Toni Morrison’s novels, including “Beloved,” are on the display.

“Here’s the thing with banned books in general: it never makes sense to ban them because it’s just going to make people want to read them more,” Berg said. “And every book, no matter how problematic and terrible,” has its place.

“‘Gone With the Wind’ has its place if paired with education and conversations,” Berg said. “It’s a door-opener to talk about other things.”

Berg, who reads for a living, said listening to audiobooks counts as reading.

“Audiobooks are reading,” Berg said. “People always come in and they’re like, ‘I don’t read, but I listen.’ Well, you’re getting the knowledge. I like listening, when it’s a celebrity memoir or a comedian memoir, especially when they read it.”

Berg’s current book recommendations include Adam Rapp’s newest novel, “Wolf at the Table,” and Tananarive Due’s novel “The Reformatory.”

Due’s tale is set in Jim Crow Florida, where a 12-year-old boy who has a gift for seeing ghosts is sentenced to a reform school that’s a chamber of horrors just like its true-life inspiration, the notorious Dozier School for Boys.

Key West Side Tracks is available on Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify and other podcast apps. New episodes drop on Thursdays.

Past guests include musician Michael Franti and Todd Newton, the host of the “Price is Right Live” touring game show.

A SECOND CHANCE AT A SENIOR PROM

Community comes together for new event

mandy@keysweekly.com

Arecent Friday evening on Kennedy Drive gave new meaning to the term “senior prom,” as the attendees at this one were all old enough to drink legally — and most are grandparents and greatgrandparents.

This particular senior prom took place April 19 at the Senior Citizen Plaza, an apartment complex for older residents that’s run by the Key West Housing Authority.

“Some of our residents said they had never been to a prom when they were in high school,” said Peter Batty, director of community relations for the housing authority. “So we decided to host a prom for them in the auditorium of the apartment complex.”

The community came together to make the inaugural event a truly memorable evening, Batty said.

Friends and Pepe’s restaurants, donated the dinner that was served to each attendee. A DJ provided age-appropriate music that was familiar to the crowd and the Key West police and fire departments each sent officers and firefighters to pose for photos under a balloon arch and dance with anyone who needed a partner.

City Manager Al Childress was in attendance, along with Police Chief Sean Brandenburg, Fire Chief Alan Averette, City Commissioner Lissette Carey, who also works at the housing authority, and others.

The auditorium was decorated in true prom fashion, with gold stars hanging from the ceiling and tabletop decor.

“And while everyone here is old enough to drink alcohol, at least we don’t have to worry about anyone driving home, as you’re already here,” Batty joked.

STAGE IS SET FOR SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL

Meet the minds behind the music May 1-5

For 28 years, the Key West Songwriters Festival, working with the BMI performance rights organization, has brought country music’s best and brightest music makers to the island every spring. Dozens of songwriters perform every day at venues all over town, from intimate acoustic shows to a huge free concert on Duval Street.

Download the festival’s phone application from the Apple Store or Google Play for a full schedule of each day’s venues and performers, who this year include Cole Swindell, Robert Earl Keen, Mackenzie Carpenter, Dallas Davidson, Thompson Square, Jack Ingram, Rebecca Lynn Howard and dozens more.

The Key West Songwriters Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the world. It has kicked off the careers of such names as Kacey Musgraves, Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen, Michael Ray, Randy Houser and Maren Morris. The event has grown into a top

destination for music lovers who flock to Key West for five days and nights of live music and storytelling from veteran songwriters and possibly the next big hit-makers.

Expect to hear a wide variety of songs you know and love and some you may not recognize, but be prepared to leave with plenty of new favorites.

Charity is also a huge part of the festival, which each year auctions off guitars signed by festival artists. Auction proceeds benefit the BMI Foundation, the Key West-based Michelle’s Foundation and the Key West High School Band.

The BMI Foundation supports the creation, performance and study of music through awards, scholarships, grants and commissions.

Michelle’s Foundation was established in honor of Michelle Keevan Halpern to help children achieve their highest potential. With an all-volunteer staff, donations to Michelle’s Foundation helps cancer patients while they are undergoing treatment; provides free tutoring and learning skills to at-risk kids, offers college scholarships and provides a last meal of the day for underprivileged local kids.

OPEN DAILY FROM 10 AM TO 6 PM

The College of the Florida Keys Foundation reveled in the Roaring ’20s while raising money for CFK Academy, the new charter high school on the college’s Key West campus.

The “Roaring Good Time” soiree featured flapper fashions, a sultry speakeasy theme, food, drinks, raffles, music and a silent auction.

Back in the 1920s, when booze was banned during Prohibition, many cafes and coffee shops became clandestine bars known as speakeasies, slyly serving booze to patrons who had been entrusted with secret hand signals or passwords, and the good times flowed.

The same was true at the recent CFK soiree, where a secret password, “Silent Tugas,” was needed for admission.

Even the drinks had creative names like “monkey rum” and “tarantula juice” to throw off the eavesdropping ears of government agents and Temperance League toadies.

Women embraced the flapper look, with headbands, gloves, long necklaces and some feather flair. The men looked dapper in pinstriped suits, and a festive photo booth captured the evening.

Student performers provided some of the live music, and all students pitched in to set up, serve food and clean up.

“The students at the CFK Academy, with guidance from employees, produced an exceptionally high-quality event that spotlighted their individual and collective artistic, entrepreneurial and organizational skills,” said CFK President Jonathan Gueverra.

According to the school website, CFK Academy is a tuition-free public charter high school where students dive deep into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and Career technical education (CTE). Students are challenged to go beyond the standard high school curriculum. They can earn college credits toward an associate degree while still in high school. This approach allows them to graduate with a head start on college or career goals. More information is at cfk.edu/academy.

MURDER SUSPECT TAKES 30-YEAR PLEA DEAL

Angel Font, now 23, killed Jossue Gomez in June 2021; 2 others involved got 12 years

MANDY MILES

mandy@keysweekly.com

AKey West man who was facing trial for the 2021 shooting death of Key Wester Jossue Emmanuel Gomez, then 19, on Tuesday accepted a 30-year plea deal.

Online court records indicate the plea was accepted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, but the accompanying documentation had not been uploaded Tuesday evening.

Angel Font, now 23, was scheduled to be tried next month for shooting Gomez in a car near the intersection of Amelia and Howe streets on June 22, 2021. Two other suspects, Daino Gaines and Cortez Leatherwood, had pleaded guilty in April 2023 and agreed to testify against Font in return for 12-year prison sentences.

Font has been awaiting trial at the Monroe County Detention Center since his 2021 arrest, when he fled the Florida Keys, cut his hair and was found two weeks later in Merritt Island, Florida in Brevard County.

The shooting was apparently the result of a robbery gone wrong.

Key West police reports indicate that in the early-morning hours of June 22, 2021, the three suspects planned to order four ounces of marjuana from the victim, Gomez, and then rob him at gunpoint.

When Gomez arrived for the deal, he allegedly got in a car with Font while the other two suspects hid nearby. After seeing the car do a U-turn, the other suspects told police they heard a gunshot and then saw Font running away from the car.

Gomez was airlifted to Miami, where he died of his wounds.

Font was found and arrested by U.S. marshals on July 2, 2021. Gaines and Leatherwood were arrested about two weeks later, following more investigation and their cooperation with police.

MARINE SANCTUARY ANNOUNCES NEW DEPUTY CHIEF

Former JIATFS leader Burke named to position

David Burke, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and 32-year military veteran, is the new deputy superintendent for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. He began the role on Earth Day, April 22.

“Captain Burke is skilled at managing complexity and risk, with wide-ranging experience overseeing programs, finances and human resources,” said sanctuary superintendent Sarah Fangman. “These are the exact skills required for a deputy superintendent’s role, and the fact he is already in the Keys and familiar with the landscape, makes him perfectly suited. We feel lucky to have him.”

Burke came to Key West in 2020 and served as chief of staff for Joint Interagency Task Force South, known as JIATFS, home to more than 500 personnel from all branches of the military, Federal agencies, civilians, contractors and senior officers from more than 20 partner nations. He began his naval career as a helicopter pilot before transitioning into management roles, including chief of staff of Carrier Strike Group Twelve.

“The Marine Sanctuary has a very different mission than the one at JIATFS, but it relies on similar skill sets — seamless integration of a complex organization and excellence in execution, balanced with uncompromising stewardship,” Burke said. “There will always be more work than resources, so in order to get the job done we have to be super creative managing assets and relationships.”

In addition to his undergraduate degree from the Naval Academy, Burke has earned master’s degrees from the University of San Diego and National Defense University. He is a member of the local chapter of Navy League and the 2025 president-elect of the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club.

“When driving down to Key West in 2020, looking out from the Overseas Highway with all the different colors of blue in the water, I immediately recognized the uniqueness of this world-renowned natural environment. Shortly after arrival, my wife looked at me and said, ‘I don’t ever want to leave.’ We were fortunate to find a home in town, and following my Navy retirement, I’ve been actively engaged in this vibrant community. The sanctuary feels like a perfect fit.”

The sanctuary was designated in 1990 and protects 3,800 square miles of waters surrounding the Keys. It is administered by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and is jointly managed with the state of Florida.

KAI VISITS KEY WEST POLICE COMMAND STAFF

Cow Key Bridge Run set for May 4

Hi friends! Reef the fox here with your weekly “Reef’s Report. ”I hope you all enjoyed my interview with Fred the Tree last week. I am in the process of lining up some more amazing interviews for you all.

Two weeks ago, my mom, Pawsitive Beginnings Inc. founder Nicole Navarro, and Kai headed to Key West for an action-packed day with the Key West Police Department (KWPD). Chief Sean Brandenburg invited mom down to talk about Pawsitive Beginnings and the work we are doing within Monroe County via our one-of-a-kind animal-assisted therapy program.

Mom and Kai started the day with a visit to the mounted patrol barn, where Kai got to meet the horses face to face. Mila, Murph and Rey (horses) were all extremely fascinated with little Kai and his very distinct foxy smell. Murph especially would have liked to keep Kai as a saddlebag buddy, as he just couldn’t stay away and kept sniffing him with his big horsey snoot. Mom said it was really adorable, and hysterical.

Then they made their way to KWPD headquarters where mom spoke to the command staff about us foxes, where we came from and how our stories of survival, from fur farms to freedom, are changing the way people heal here in the Florida Keys. We will have some exciting updates about new organizations that will be bringing their clients to come

meet us and some presentations we will be doing within the community in the coming weeks, so make sure you are following us on social media if you aren’t already.

REEF THE FOX

Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm. He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.

Since we have been talking about Key West today, I want to highlight a really fun event that is coming up and benefits one of my favorite places. The Cow Key Bridge Run 2024 presents “Cow Wars 2024 - May The 4th Be With Moo!” Get ready for an epic showdown at Cow Key Bridge Run on Saturday, May 4 at noon. Challenge your friends to see who can moo the loudest and strut their stuff on the bridge. There will be prizes for the best costumes, so get creative and bring your A-game. All proceeds go toward charity. We will be benefiting the MCSO’s Animal Farm and the Highgate Charitable Foundation.

Anywho, that’s all for this week. Be sure to keep up with all things fox by visiting pawsitivebeginnings. org and heading to our social media links.

Until next time, Reef, over and out!

Commemorative bricks support Key West Art & Historical Society

The Key West Art & Historical Society will add a limited number of personalized commemorative bricks along the southeast walkway adjacent to its Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House. Bricks are available for purchase for the remainder of the year with a projected installation date of June 2025.

Personalized bricks can celebrate a connection to Key West and ensure that an individual, a business, friend, loved one or pet will be memorialized. Funds from the brick campaign provide for the ongoing costs of safeguarding the society’s architecturally significant

museum building — a beacon of historic preservation and center for community engagement.

A $130 donation secures one commemorative brick that can accommodate up to three lines of text and can also be embellished with a selection of decorative symbols for an additional $25.

More information is at kwahs. org/support, or from the membership coordinator Kim Livingston at 305-295-6616, ext. 506 or klivingston@kwahs.org. The society is a registered charitable organization and contributions may be tax deductible; donors may consult a tax adviser for details.

COUNTY LEADERS WON’T TAKE OVER TDC

Also: Privately owned vacant lots in the Keys number 3K

The Tourist Development Council’s failed audits led to the firing of its top director and have subjected the tourism marketing agency to public scrutiny that it’s never faced in its 40-year history.

But the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has no interest in taking over the TDC, according to officials.

It’s not the TDC’s structure – it’s the financial controls that were the problem, the BOCC agreed at its April 17 meeting.

A takeover would just mean more government, County Mayor Holly Raschein said.

But transparency and accountability must improve, she said, starting with routine TDC audits.

Even nonprofits on shoestring budgets have to undergo an audit every year, yet the TDC, dealing in tens of millions of dollars, chugged along for decades unchecked, the commissioners noted.

In October 2023, County Clerk Kevin Madok launched the first of four separate audits on the TDC and its advertising and marketing partner agencies.

When was the last time the TDC was audited?

No one has the exact date.

“It was talked about at the TDC that it was 20 years or longer since they had had an audit,” said commissioner Craig Cates, of Key West.

The TDC collects a four-cent “bed tax” on every dollar spent at Florida Keys hotels and lodging establishments. The money is used to advertise the Keys as a vacation destination, promote events that attract visitors and fund construction projects to enhance tourism.

They’re the experts on marketing the Keys, commissioner David Rice, of Marathon, said.

“It would be really easy to overreact,” Rice said. “When I think back through the years, we probably reached a point where the revenue for TDC became large enough that they should have brought in a chief operating officer, a financial officer. That would have helped. Spilled milk.”

Rita Irwin, the TDC board chair, thanked the BOCC and county staff members who were sent in to work with the agency after the audit, which found repeated noncompliance with county policies and questionable accounting practices.

“I appreciate the confidence in us getting better,” Irwin said.

“We need to do this right and to keep Monroe County bringing in this tourist money that keeps our property taxes lower,” Irwin said. “It’s important to keep this engine running.”

A final tally

For years, people in the Keys have bandied about the number of privately owned vacant lots that remain to be developed in the Keys. It was always “nearly 8,000” or “about 7,900.”

Now, Monroe County staff has pinned down a realistic total at just under 3,000, as the county prepares a response to the state’s FloridaCommerce department on a request for building permits – which is directly tied to the Keys’ hurricane evacuation plan.

The 7,900 figure that the state was using as a reference had been based on the number of privately owned, vacant properties across the entire Keys.

But county staff found that if you take away the lots that can’t be developed due to environmental restrictions and zoning laws, the grand total of vacant developable lots is realistically 2,997.

“I am going to start saying 3,000, myself,” Emily Schemper, the

county’s senior director of planning and environmental resources told the BOCC on April 17. “It’s an approximate number to begin with. It’s too much of a mouthful for me.”

After FloridaCommerce released a series of hurricane evacuation models for the Keys, several that expanded the 24-hour requirement to safely evacuate everyone, the BOCC asked for a year to hash out their options.

“We’re mapping out the future of the Keys,” Raschein told Keys Weekly. “There’s a finite number now.”

The state is expecting Monroe County to submit a decision.

“They’re not ruling with an iron fist,” Raschein said. “They’re yielding to us to make a decision. We will ultimately decide and send something to the state.”

Between now and December, when the BOCC plans to make that final vote, county staff will make presentations at a series of public meetings up and down the island chain. The county will also take public comment online.

County planners have already started visiting Rotary Clubs, housing associations, real estate agents and other community groups.

The bulk of the 3,000 vacant lots awaiting development in the Keys — 2,220 — is in unincorporated Monroe.

Even though Key West was listed as having 84 lots, the city said each is already taken. The same goes for Layton’s 10 lots.

Key Colony Beach doesn’t participate in the rate-of-growthordinance building permit allotment, so the 39 lots the state had factored for KCB aren’t applicable.

County staff confirmed that Marathon has 556 vacant lots and Islamorada has 221.

$5 million gift expands Fishermen’s Community Hospital campus

JASON KOLER

Earlier this month, the first patients crossed through the doors of the Walsh Family Medical Arts Building located on the campus of Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon.

The Walsh family owns Ocean Properties Hotels and Resorts - a group of independently owned and operated hotels and properties. The business spans over 19,000 guestrooms across North America. They are the largest hotel owner and operator in Florida and one of the largest employers in the Florida Keys. Their philanthropic organization, OPL Charities, has given millions of dollars in support of schools, libraries, museums, food banks and other organizations. The $5 million gift is their latest philanthropic endeavor.

The new hurricane-resistant, 10,000-square-foot facility will house primary care physician offices and specialty services like orthopedics, gastroenterology, oncology infusion, physical therapy and rehabilitation services. It will allow the oncology infusion area inside the hospital to relocate to a bigger space, adding two more chairs and a lab area. The new building will also allow for greater clinical collaboration and make imaging and testing services more convenient for patients.

“Partnering with Baptist Health was a great match, because our business, like theirs, is all about caring - caring for our guests and hospitality team like they care for their patients and staff,” said Mark Walsh, who first visited Marathon

“The Walsh Family Medical Arts Building represents yet another step forward in serving the health and wellness needs of our community,” said Drew Grossman, CEO of Baptist Health Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Mariners Hospital. “By consolidating services on one campus, this new facility extends Baptist Health’s commitment to provide the best healthcare to all residents and visitors in the Keys.”

GETTING IN TUNE

Let’s say you’re sitting at your favorite bar and the band starts playing. The singer sounds pretty good. You’re not convinced they’re quite professional, but everything is pleasing to the ear. Then, while the singer is reaching for a high note, something sounds weird for a second. Once the singer releases a death grip on that note, things return to normal. Or let’s say the notes don’t seem to match in the guitar player’s solo. Chances are the singer and the guitar player are out of tune.

Singers have a couple of ways of getting in tune. The first and, most professional, is the ability to match one’s voice to the instruments around them. Experienced singers can do this as a result of hours of training, like a basketball player who can jump high and at full speed, control their movements and know exactly where they are at all times. (As opposed to someone like myself, who closes my eyes, jumps and hopes I do something that puts the ball near the basket.) An experienced singer is not usually thinking about what it takes to stay in tune, because that comes as naturally to them as a tourist honking the horn on a rented scooter.

A singer who struggles to stay in tune may have one of a couple issues going on. It may be the material, perhaps riddled with notes too high for the singer’s range, as if asking a bass to play the same

note as a flute. This can cause not only flat notes, but also, and more importantly, vocal fatigue, which can result in a loss of pitch control even on familiar material. Sometimes a singer’s ear is just not developed. In such cases, a singer will often rely on their memory of the physical feeling of singing in that key, recalling the level of tension in their voice at the time. A person can become quite astute at this skill, but a singer who relies on this method may be limiting their ability.

The ability to sing a capella is a telltale sign of a good singer. Without instruments to define the key, the singer must recall from memory the very first note and the physical feeling of reproducing that note. They then use their trained ear to listen to the notes they are singing from memory. For an entire song. Without slipping out of key. Or changing key altogether and singing a bunch of different notes.

Then there are the others — the people who get out of bed in the morning with all these skills at their fingertips, with little training and sometimes even less effort. (Think children born with angelic voices and perfect pitch.) But not for the rest of us. Singing is great, but singing great is difficult.

DASHING IN DRAG

Conch Republic race high-steps down Duval Street

High heels instead of high octane powered the 11 contestants in Key West’s annual Conch Republic Drag Race, a madcap challenge for female impersonators on April 20.

The parody of auto racing featured men in drag – complete with wigs, dresses, makeup and high heels – dashing along Duval Street, Key West’s aptly nicknamed “main drag.”

Attempting to outpace their rivals, they navigated an obstacle course of tires, “walked the plank” and competed in a heat, pushing “hot rods” in shopping carts.

The most notable entrants included a diva in a pink skirt, matching pink wig and gauze wings; a blonde mini-skirted “sailor” in high red boots; and a charmer in a sequined frock and full beard — who carried a doll throughout the race.

Key West’s annual Conch Republic Drag Race takes place April 20 on Duval Street as part of the island’s Conch Republic Independence Celebration. LARRY BLACKBURN/Keys Weekly

Spectators lined the street to watch the “girls” sprint and stagger along the course, despite dramatic falls, broken heels and other upsets caused by “road hazards.”

The race was part of Key West’s 42nd annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration. The 10-day festival commemorates the Florida Keys’ 1982 mock secession from the United States and formation of the republic – in protest of the installation of a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint at the head of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway.

The 2024 celebration runs through Sunday, April 28, with other events including a lighthearted sea battle featuring tall ships, a race of decorated beds and a Duval Street parade billed as “the world’s longest.”

MAGNIFICENT MARINE CREATURE FACES MONUMENTAL CHALLENGE

Sawfish struggles bring flashback to a first sighting

Iwill never forget the first time I observed a sawfish. I was camping in the Keys, long before I called this place home.

We took a boat out in the evening; the water was crystal clear. Suddenly, this large, magnificent creature swam up to the boat. I honestly could not believe my eyes. Growing up in a small Indiana town I had never seen anything like it before. It moved with such grace and its appearance was straight out of a science fiction movie. How could this creature be real? Every detail on it was so interesting and unique. I felt like I had just spotted a unicorn. It was truly an experience I will never forget.

Flash forward to life today. I’ve been living in the Keys for more than 15 years and know quite a bit about this amazing creature. The same creature that has been receiving press lately due to its mysteriously rapid decline. This had me thinking about how many people know about the sawfish – its history, struggles, unique beauty and importance in our ecosystem.

Keys residents are saddened reading articles on sawfish or seeing social media posts on their current situation. I believe it’s important to fully appreciate this awesome creature and what we stand to lose if the sawfish were to disappear. This can help create compassion and true action to save this beautiful species. Sawfish belong to the same group of fish as sharks, rays and skates. Fossil records suggest that sawfish ancestors date back over 100 million years. Over time, sawfish evolved their distinctive elongated rostrums lined with teeth. This adapta-

tion developed as a hunting tool, allowing sawfish to slash through schools of fish or dig into the substrate to uncover prey.

Sawfish have held cultural significance in various human societies throughout history. In some indigenous cultures, sawfish were viewed as sacred animals, while in others, their rostrums were used for ceremonial purposes or as tools. Sawfish are also featured in the folklore of certain cultures. In recent centuries, sawfish populations have declined significantly due to human activities such as habitat destruction, overfishing and accidental bycatch in fishing gear.

Sawfish are typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries and subtropical regions. They prefer habitats with soft bottoms like sand where they can partially bury themselves. The females give live birth. Sawfish primarily feed on fish, crustaceans and mollusks. These amazing creatures have small pores on their saw-like rostrums that can detect electrical fields of prey. Sawfish can grow to over 25 feet. Their size makes them apex predators in their ecosystems.

Sawfish play important ecological

roles in their habitats, and their presence contributes to the overall health and balance of marine ecosystems. By preying on a variety of fish, crustaceans and mollusks, sawfish help control the populations of these species. This prevents species from becoming overly dominant and helps maintain biodiversity within the ecosystem. Sawfish enhance habitats through foraging activities. Their digging behavior can help aerate and churn sediments, benefiting other organisms living in the substrate. When sawfish consume prey, they excrete waste that contributes to nutrient cycling. This helps replenish nutrients in the water and sediment, which supports the growth of algae and other primary producers.

The long history of sawfish is a complex story of adaptation, exploitation and conservation. Facing and overcoming significant challenges, sawfish play a multifaceted role in our ecosystem. The sawfish is federally listed as endangered and protecting them will have a positive ripple effect benefiting countless other species and ecosystems.

HELP KEEP KEY WEST CLEAN

JOIN A 1- HOUR CLEANUP FRIDAY MORNINGS

266 pounds of trash, 11.5 pounds of recycling and 3.5 gallons of cigarette butts. CONTRIBUTED

One hour a week makes a huge difference, and volunteers are welcome every Friday and some Saturday mornings, from 8 to 9 a.m., when the Key West Ploggers clean up a designated area of the island.

Gloves, pickers, buckets, vests, hand sanitizer and a parking pass are provided to all volunteers.

A troubling number of cigarette butts and plastic bags have been included in recent hauls. Please remember your reusable bags when shopping so we can keep the plastic off the streets, parking lots and, most importantly, out of the water. And dispose of cigarette butts in any receptacle rather than the street or sidewalk, as from there, they easily end up in the ocean.

The city of Key West and its residents ask everyone to do their part to help keep Key West beautiful. With simple steps like making sure you bag your trash before putting it in your Waste Management trash cans or Dumpsters, and making sure the lids on Dumpsters are closed, will keep a lot of trash from blowing into the streets. Call Waste Management at 305-296-8297 for any

furniture items left on the city right of way.

Please pick up around your home or apartment complex. Every piece of trash picked up is one less that may end up in the ocean that surrounds and sustains our island community. It is not just the large items you can see easily when you are walking, but the smaller items such as bottle caps and cigarette butts that are collected by the volunteers that make the biggest difference.

It takes committed community involvement to keep Key West beautiful and we are making progress with every cleanup event and every spot that’s adopted. Call Dorian Patton at 305-809-3782 to find out how your business, nonprofit or club can help.

MARINE LIFE NEEDS MORE MANGROVES

Groups team up for Keys corals & coastlines

Two foundations teamed up on April 20 in the Lower Keys to highlight the importance of mangrove restoration for the Florida Keys’ marine environment.

The groups, CoastLove and Plant A Million Corals (PAMC), challenged community members to find mangrove propagules, or seeds, and bring them to Summerland Farms, where a collection container encourages people to drop off the propagules along with any donations of gardening materials such as pots and soil.

At the April 20 event, the public helped plant the propagules, toured the coral and mangrove nurseries and enjoyed music, food, snow cones, raffles and a discussion of the foundations’ efforts.

Mangrove forests are the lifeblood of Florida Keys waters. They act as marine nurseries, protecting countless juvenile species while helping to prevent coastline erosion, filtering water and storing carbon.

With worldwide mangrove forests rapidly declining, the foundations are working together to restore the vital marine ecosystems.

“We are so excited to be partnering with CoastLove,” said Dee Dee Vaughn Smause of PAMC foundation. “Their commitment to community-driven conservation, education and restoration aligns perfectly with that of Plant a Million Corals. We each have our missions to make the much-needed impact on our coral reefs, coastlines and our community, which depends on healthy coral reefs and mangroves.”

A CoastLove booth on April 20 offered framed selfie photos of people who pledged to be part of efforts to reduce single-use plastic bags while local firefighters handed out snow cones to little ones.

“Through action and education we are bringing information to the community through events and partnerships such as this,” said CoastLove program manager Dawn Bowles.

Tours of the facility featured small fragments of growing corals and baby mangroves that eventually can be planted in the ocean

“Our tanks not only are more efficient for coral restoration and monitoring, but they can be made in one to two days for a fraction of the cost of industry-standard, fiberglass tanks,” facility manager Jason Smause said. “They are one of the tools we use to scale up coral restoration to the level needed to save our reefs.”

Donations of planting materials such as pots, soil, gloves, shovels and mangrove propagules are always accepted at Summerland Farms, 23801 Overseas Hwy., MM 23.

Race World Offshore’s Seven Mile Grand Prix is back this weekend

Bumpy conditions are once again in the forecast as high-octane race teams gear up for the revitalized 2024 Seven Mile Grand Prix this weekend.

Races set for Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28 will pit the fastest boats on the water –think up to 140 mph – against one another on a 5.6-mile nearshore course that parallels the Old Seven Mile Bridge to kick off the American Power Boat Association’s Offshore National Championship Series.

Events around town and on the water will provide a comprehensive spectator experience for guests. Here’s what you need to know:

WATCH THE RACES

The primary viewing area is on the Old Seven Mile Bridge, but spectators may be able to see some parts of the races from the western gulfside edge of Marathon as shown in the course map. Reserved VIP areas will be sectioned off on portions of Old Seven as well as the park at the base of the bridge.

WATCH FROM THE WATER

Spectator vessels are welcome in the designated areas marked in the course map. The area around the race course and under the east end of the Seven Mile Bridge is closed to vessel traffic throughout Saturday and Sunday. The area will temporarily open to boat traffic from noon to 1:30 p.m. each day.

ADMISSION

Viewing the races from the Old Seven Mile Bridge is FREE.

Two-day VIP packages are available for $300 and include designated seating near the water’s edge at the foot of the Seven Mile Bridge and on top of the bridge, admission to special events throughout the weekend, and special parking. More details are at raceworldoffshore.com/marathon-7-mile-vip.

What: “Matilda” (1996)

Why: We recently marked National Library Week, and what better way to celebrate than with the patron saint of literacy — Matilda Wormwood? You may have fond memories of Roald Dahl’s classic book as well as this film adaptation directed by Danny DeVito. We’re happy to say it not only holds up, but there are layers to unpack in it as an adult. The film has a dark streak that offsets any potential saccharine qualities you might expect from any story dealing with young children. It also has a quirky sensibility that effectively renders it both funny and timeless.

Staff from your Monroe County Public Library recommend some of their favorites from the collection.

What: “The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook For Surviving Medieval England” by Brandon Sanderson

Why: This novel introduced me to my new favorite genre, what the author refers to as a “white-room story;” it’s the kind of story that starts with neither the reader nor the main character knowing what’s going on. Amnesia literature, if you will. “The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook” is a chimera that combines high fantasy, time travel, detective fiction and Earth-ish historical fiction, with an underdog story streak a mile wide. This is one of those books I wish I could read again for the first time, because it was just that fun. Five stars, recommending to everyone, especially fans of “Doctor Who,” “Twin Peaks,” or “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.”

COOLING KEYS PROPERTY SALES LED TO A BURIED TREASURE SCHEME

Contrived hunt by writers dominated the headlines

J.P. McEvoy was an American writer, novelist and cartoonist. He was born on Jan. 10, 1897, in New York City. One of the movies based on his work was called “The Potters.”

Released on Jan. 15, 1927, it starred W.C. Fields. The movie’s tagline was, “Right out of the funny papers and twice as funny!”

On Jan. 7, 1926, the San Francisco Examiner ran McEvoy’s “The Potters” comic strip. What was interesting about this particular comic was that McEvoy wrote about pirate treasure and Key Largo.

Bill: Well, to tell you the truth, there is something exciting down here just now and you’re just in time to get in on it.

Red: Remember, no real estate.

Bill: No, this isn’t real estate. It’s more exciting than that.

Mamie: Oh tell me, what is it, quick!

Bill: Buried treasure. Pirate gold.

Red: Go on!

Bill: Absolutely. Do you know that for the last three days I haven’t been able to get a boat to take me out to my lots, that every available craft with a bottom in it has been going up and down the Florida Keys for the last week full of treasure hunters, and right now there’s a key about forty miles from here – a place called Key Largo – that is said to be one of the historical caches of the pirates who roved the Spanish Main.

FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY WITH BRAD BERTELLI

Brad is a local historian, author, speaker and Honorary Conch who loves sharing the history of the Florida Keys.

The focus of the comic was, in fact, real estate, and it was no accident that the New York humorist, novelist and cartoonist wrote about buried treasure on Key Largo. He was trying to drive up interest on cooling property sales during the Florida Land Boom. McEvoy was not working alone but with a fellow writer and friend, Ben Hecht.

Hecht was an American playwright, journalist, novelist and Oscar-winning screenwriter who worked on the script for “Gone With The Wind” (he is uncredited), among other movies. In 1925, Hecht and McEvoy visited Miami. They were introduced to Charles Ort, then president of the Key Largo Corporation representing the lots for sale in the yet-to-be-developed Key Largo City.

Hecht and McEvoy were invited to a meeting with the corporation’s directors. There, Hecht presented an idea to stir interest in the Key Largo properties, and the room ate his story up. As a result, he was hired to contrive a story about pirate treasure buried in Key Largo. However, his first idea was flawed.

The first plan was to charter a yacht in New York City and lure 50 “society women” to the Keys with the promise of a treasure hunt for pirate gold. New York’s society ladies would come to Key Largo to “discover” planted treasure, go home and spread the word of their exciting fortune. The working theory was that once the news began to spread, people would flock to Key Largo to buy their potential lottery ticket.

For his efforts, Hecht was paid $5,000 a week for a 12-week period. In addition, the Key Largo Corporation would pay for his expenses and the fees associated with renting the yacht and bringing it to Key Largo. The problem was that Hecht and McEvoy, his partner, were unable to convince any ladies to join the treasure hunt so Hecht rewrote the “discovery” scenario.

According to the stories told about the scheme, Hecht contacted Cuba’s president and asked if he could borrow a few gold coins. Which president is unclear as there were two presidents in 1925. If Hecht made his request before May 20, it would have been Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso (1921-1925). Gerardo Machado (1925-1933) assumed office on May 20, 1925.

Whoever was in office was amenable and loaned Hecht a few coins from when the Spanish treasure fleets sailed between Cuba and Spain. Hecht placed the coins inside some Spanish vases and buried them on Key Largo. Then, an island local was said to have been paid $100 to “discover” the buried treasure and tell

his story to the press and public.

According to a story about real estate fraud published in the Nov. 29, 1953 edition of the Tampa Bay Times, “The two crocks of doubloons had been dug up by a fisherman named Captain Chester, and Hecht then spent a week helping the captain find adequate words to describe his discovery to newspaper reporters.”

The same newspaper story stated that the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Herbert Bayard Swopes of the New York World sent Hecht a telegram. Swopes informed Hecht that he wanted to rush down to cover the story only if Hecht guaranteed it was legitimate. The telegram was apparently ignored. It did not stop other reporters from venturing to Florida. When they did, Hecht teased them with the Spanish coins on loan from the Cuban government.

Hecht told a slightly different story than the one written about in the Tampa Bay Times. In the story he crafted, the man who discovered $250,000 in Spanish treasure buried in 25 giant Spanish vases was a deputy sheriff named Bill Lofton — who appears to have been a figment of Hecht’s imagination, too.

The story was printed in as many as 200 newspapers nationwide, including the Omaha Daily News on Dec. 19, 1925. The headline read: “25-Year Hunt Yields Buried Treasure – Weatherbeaten Mariner Unearths Cache of Dublooms and Pieces of Eight Near Key Largo, Florida.”

Hecht and McEvoy read the writing on the wall and separated themselves from the project when the land boom began to implode. The Key Largo Corporation was not as fortunate.

IDENTIFY THE SIGNS

Recognizing signs of vaping can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for. One of the most telling signs that your teen may be vaping is the presence of vaping equipment among his or her belongings. Vaping equipment includes e-cigarettes, flavored liquid bottles, and small pods or cartridges that can contain THC oil.

KEY WEST ARTIST TO TELL GHOST STORIES 2 SEA TURTLES HEAD HOME ON EARTH DAY

Hospital treats, releases juveniles rescued last year

In celebration of Earth Day, the staff from the Turtle Hospital released two rehabilitated green sea turtles back to their ocean home from Sombrero Beach in Marathon.

“Sherry” was rescued in September 2023 off Marathon, where she was found floating and entangled in fishing line, and suffering from fibropapillomatosis, a debilitating tumorcausing viral disease that affects sea turtles around the world.

The larger of the two turtles, “PG,” short for “Pretty Girl,” was rescued in October 2023 off the Upper Keys where she was found with a heavy tumor load.

Treatment for both turtles included tumor-removal surgeries, broad-spectrum antibiotics, fluids, vitamins and a healthy diet.

Both turtles are now tumor-free, swimming strongly and back in good health.

“There’s no better way to celebrate Earth Day than releasing two green sea turtles back to their ocean home in the Florida Keys,” said Bette Zirkelbach, the Turtle Hospital’s manager.

“It’s important to protect our oceans for future generations,” Zirkelbach added. “Sea turtles are an indicator species – what happens to them is eventually going to affect all of life.”

Before the turtles were released, kids and their parents had a chance to see the turtles up close and learn from Zirkelbach about the need to protect the world’s oceans.

The Turtle Hospital, based in Marathon, opened in 1986 as the world’s first state-licensed veterinary hospital solely dedicated to the rehabilitation of endangered sea turtles.

Wayne Garcia presents ‘They Only Follow Us at Night’ May 10

On Friday, May 10, folk artist, third generation Cuban American and Key West native Wayne Garcia will present a night of eerie storytelling spotlighting the island’s ghost stories as part of the Key West Art & Historical Society’s Distinguished Speaker Series. His talk, entitled “They Only Follow Us At Night,” takes place from 6 to 7 p.m. at Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St.

Garcia will share yarns of old Key West, his memories from growing up, and several of the island’s lesser-known ghost stories. His tales will be accompanied by his colorful wood carvings and vintage photographs depicting the island’s idiosyncratic past.

“The society is delighted that Wayne has once again agreed to present an evening of Key West stories, using his striking artwork and the characters within as a visualization

tool,” said Cori Convertito, curator for the historical society. “Wayne deftly weaves together thoughtful yet lighthearted accounts of the people, the places and the events that make us long for Old Key West, and I am eager to hear about the spirits that only come out at night.”

Garcia learned the techniques of carving on wood from watching legendary folk artists Mario Sanchez and Papito Suarez. Garcia literally and figuratively paints a picture of an island paradise rich in community and culture, validating all the reasons many of us have chosen Key West as home.

Tickets are available at kwahs.org/dss-garcia. The cost $12 for KWAHS members, $15 for non-members. For more information, contact Convertito at 305-295-6616 x507 or cconvertito@kwahs.org.

CROSSING BORDERS

EXPLORING IMMIGRATION THROUGH FICTION, HISTORY AND A BEAUTIFUL MEMOIR

EXIT WEST

KAREN NEWFIELD

First and foremost a reader, she has reviewed hundreds of books on her blog www. readingandeating. com. And, more recently, this new Keys resident has also begun writing.

and Nadia meet at the onset of civil war. Saeed notices Nadia in class one evening and invites her for coffee. She wears a floor-length black robe, so Saeed is shocked when this independent woman accepts and drives away on her scooter. As their friendship blossoms, they become obsessed with the hidden doors that are rumored to exist throughout the city. When it is too dangerous to stay – food, electric and phone service are long gone – the couple searches for the door. In Narnia fashion, these doors symbolize entrance into another world. These fictional doors resemble immigration issues we face today. People leaving families, jobs and homes carrying a small bag and a glimmer of hope. These immigrants who dare to cross invisible lines called borders are often viewed as a burden wherever they land. With each stop, the people are annoyed they cannot instantly assimilate, speak the language and dress accordingly. Scared and lonely, they find comfort in groups with people similar to themselves. Together they beg for a chance to start over while the nativists revolt. This beautifully-written story follows the couple as they search for a place to call home.

THE NEXT SHIP HOME

Escaping war, drought, famine and religious persecution, people have always dreamed of a new life in a new country. In 1902, these men, women and children made their way through Ellis Island. Francesca and Maria escaped their abusive father in Sicily, boarding a ship filled with the poor, sick and desperate. A woman named Alma works at Ellis Island as a matron. She lives with her strict German family on the lower east side of New York in a community where, at 21, she is an old maid. Fluent in English, German and Italian, Alma dreams of becoming a translator – a job not yet available to women. When Alma and Francesca meet during inspection, an unlikely friendship blooms. Alma helps Fran get a job and brings her home against her parents’ wishes. Her older brother Fritz is instantly smitten. As we are immersed in the history of discrimination, battles over unionizing and mistreatment of immigrants, it becomes clear these mirror the issues in our headlines today. It is daunting to see how quickly these families, only one generation American themselves, feared anyone different who wanted the very same things their ancestors sought in America.

MY SIDE OF THE RIVER

Although she was born in Tuscon, Arizona, Elizabeth struggled to feel at home in America. Her parents’ visas allowed them to work temporarily in the U.S., but when she and her brother Fernando were born, it complicated matters significantly. Her parents dreamed of giving them an American education. Scrambling financially, they worked long hours under the radar performing odd jobs no one else wanted, constantly in fear of deportation. At a young age, Elizabeth was a curious and intelligent student. She took to heart her mother’s constant whispers: “To succeed in America, you have to be the best.” At 15, a miscalculated move left her parents in Mexico with their visa renewal denied. Her young brother remained in their care, but Elizabeth, a top student, arranged to stay with a teacher’s family to finish high school. Overcoming extreme poverty and sleeping on a couch for years, Elizabeth persevered. She became valedictorian and was accepted to a multitude of top colleges. Elizabeth’s success story is a beautiful testament to the strength of family. It’s also a reflection of our broken immigration policies that separate loved ones, using these migrant workers and then throwing them away.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Gabe is having one of the best offensive seasons I’ve ever seen at MHS. He consistently barrels the bat hard and finds ways to produce when it matters most.”

– Joey Gonzalez, Marathon head coach

31 .431 hits batting average

Marathon junior catcher Gabe Leal quietly took over the leaderboards this season, amassing the sort of stats that garner attention from collegiate scouts and strike fear into the hearts of opponents. Leal has been in beast mode at bat, with 31 hits, 27 RBI and a massive .431 batting average. His offensive stats, however, do not include the most impressive number behind Leal’s name this season. That would be 1.000, his fielding percentage, which spells perfection behind the plate defensively this season. Leal is top in the district in RBI, third in batting average and No. 2 in wins as pitcher, because when he isn’t driving in runs or covering the plate, he is on the mound, delivering heat to batters. For his well-rounded repertoire of fantastic statistics and leadership on the field, Marathon’s Gabe Leal is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

Marathon’s boys baseball team improved its win streak to five last week, thanks to a trio of wins in an end-of-season run toward playoff action.

The Fins defeated Somerset South Homestead 15-1 on April 15, aided by 3 hits from junior catcher Gabe Leal. Dylan Ziels and Jack Chapman had a pair of hits each and Aidan Gonzalez, Dylan Williams, Leo Mendez and Tiago Rivero accounted for the rest. Rivero’s hit was an inside-the-park home run off a massive line drive, scoring 2 runs for Marathon. Mason Thornton only needed 5 innings on the mound to seal the win, striking out 5, walking 4 and allowing 3 hits from Somerset.

The following night, Miami High would be the next victim, falling 3-0 to the Dolphins. Ziels started with the ball, lasting 4 innings before handing it off to Leal. The duo combined for 6 strikeouts, no walks and 3 hits in the win. Leal and Thornton had 2 hits each and Leo Mendez had 1.

The final game of the week was the most important for Marathon, as April 20 was their first in their conference playoff series. The Fins were matched against Ransom Everglades, a team they had mixed results against in the regular season. The Dolphins turned to Ziels,

their ace, to secure a spot in the South Florida Baseball Conference finals against Riviera Prep on Thursday, April 25. Ziels pitched a complete game, adding 10 Ks to his stats in the big 4-0 win. Gabe Leal had another pair of hits for the Fins, making it 7 in one week. Ziels had another pair of hits and Thornton and Williams added 1. Gavin Leal, playing in his first game since suffering a hip fracture earlier in the season, had the final hit of Marathon’s 7. Coral Shores split the week, with a win on April 16 followed by a loss on the 19th. Against Somerset Silver Palms, the ’Canes brought home a 9-1 win, racking up 13 hits in the lopsided game. Donovan Thiery and Zeke Myers each had 3 of those hits. Campbell Lavoie and Maykol Bonito Rodriguez had 2 apiece. Riley O’Berry, AJ Putetti and Grady Temkin had the other 3. Lavoie pitched 6 innings, striking out 6 and allowing nine hits with no walks. Thiery closed the game, striking out 2 in his inning on the mound.

Next up for the Hurricanes were the Lions of Chaminade-Madonna. Coral Shores lost that one 7-5, scoring all of their runs in inning 7. Myers and Lavoie had matching hits, with a single and double each. Ross and Thiery teamed up to strike out 6 batters in the loss.

Key West played at FIU stadium on April 18, facing Westminster Christian School. Despite matching the Warriors hit-for-hit, the Conchs came up short, losing the game 6-4. The freshman bats were on point, with hits coming from Roman Garcia and Nelson Ong. Auggy Davila added 2 and Noah Burnham, a junior, had the final hit for Key West. Anthony Lariz, Jacob Burnham and Vinny Moline teamed up to strike out 9 batters in the loss.

The following night, Key West returned home to Rex Weech Field and defeated the 7A Buccaneers of South Dade High School in front of a delighted home crowd. Steel Mientkiewicz, Caden Pichardo, Nelson Ong, Lariz and Garcia had a base hit each in the 4-1 win. Another trio of Conchs worked together to strike out seven batters. Christian Koppal, Felix Ong and Moline all spent time on the mound, with Koppal being credited with the win. The Conchs have a pair of games at home against the Eustis Panthers on Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, before turning their focus to defending their district title.

LADY CONCHS SEAL WIN AT HOME MEET

Athletes peak right on time for districts

On April 19, Key West hosted Marathon and Archbishop McCarthy in a late-season trimeet. The Conch girls won the meet with 79.5 points. Marathon was third with 31. The boys of Key West came in second to Archbishop McCarthy but edged out the Fins 74-24.

Lee was also second in javelin with teammate Marti Kilbourne claiming third place. Ava Merryman was third in the pole vault, and Shilo Yeider was third in the 100 hurdles.

Coral Shores had an intrasquad meet on April 19 to get in some final practice prior to districts. The ’Canes did see some competition on April 17 when they traveled to Barbara Goleman High School to compete against Goleman and Miami Palmetto. Coral Shores took second place in the girls and boys events behind the Goleman Gators. Coral Shores’ boys proved to be strong in the distance events, with all three of their first-place finishes coming from there. Adrik Gadea won the 800, Alaric Rodriguez won the one-mile and Lochlain James was first in the two-mile race. Danny Malagon was second in the 200-meter race with Uriel Gutierrez right behind him in third. Ambrose Sanchez was second in the 400 hurdles while Xavier Johnson was third in the 110s. Nick Calderon was the only top-three placer in field events, claiming a third-place finish in the discus competition.

Lady ’Canes athletes saw their greatest success in Sammy Bates’ first-place finish in the 800. They had a trio of second places with Brooke Mandozzi in the 100, Mira Jones in the 400 and Hayden Teal in the one-mile race. Julieanna Oddo was third in the 100 hurdles and Susan Mendoza was two places behind Bates in the 800 event to round out the Hurricanes’ top finishers.

All three teams have now completed their regular seasons. Key West and Coral Shores competed on April 24 for the FHSAA 2A District Championships held at Tropical Park (results not available at press time). Marathon and the rest of the 1A competition have their meet at Palmer Trinity School May 1.

COURTS ADJOURNED

Keys tennis seasons end at districts

All three of Monroe County’s tennis teams showed strong performances this season, but despite their steady improvement, no Keys athletes made it to the regional matches.

Though there were no district champions, the Keys did have some highlights. Coral Shores’ boys No. 1 doubles team, consisting of Makani Burga and Aidan Althouse, did advance to day two of district play after beating Palmer Trinity School 7-5 on April 15. They lost their semifinal match against Ransom Everglades, ending their hopes of advancing to regionals.

Another bright spot was Marathon No. 1 singles player, Adrien Holdinga, whose bracket opponent was Brennon Chow of True North Classical Academy. Chow, Dade County’s Tennis Player of the Year last season, is ranked nationally and committed to play collegiately for Air Force. Holdinga managed to get on the scoreboard against him, losing 8-1 but showing grit and promise for next season. MARATHON SOFTBALL STAR DOMINANT ON SENIOR NIGHT

Key West gets needed rest as postseason play nears

Two Keys softball teams are closing out the regular season with hopes of making a deep postseason run.

Key West lost a heartbreaker on the road on April 16, falling to the Florida Christian Patriots, 2-1. Despite not committing a single error and holding Florida Christian to just 3 hits, the luck was with the Patriots.

Two Patriot hits came in the bottom of the first, including a home run which scored the only 2 runs for Florida Christian. The Conchs’ Vera Rodger, Tavyn Gage and Alexa Condella each registered a hit. Breanna Breener struck out 6, walked 1 and allowed just 3 hits in the loss.

An injury-plagued Key West team will dig deep in the coming weeks as the regular season comes to a close. Rest and recuperation will be key for the Lady Conchs with the postseason approaching. With only two teams in their district participating in the playoffs, the Conchs will punch their card directly into the district championship game against St. Brendan on May 2 at St. Brendan High School.

Marathon had mixed results last week, first losing to Miami Country Day on April 15. The Fins were without their starting pitcher and facing a team which had already beaten them by 10. Daniela Gonalez and Daniuska Perdomo had the only 2 hits for Marathon, and Sara Robinson filled in at pitcher, striking out 2 batters in h first-ever performance at the position.

The Lady Fins did not take the 11-0 loss lightly, coming for Mater Academy Bay with a vengeance on April 18. Senior Allison Garcia was back in the circle for Marathon on Senior Night. Garcia fanned 5 batters in 5 innings, walking 1 and allowing 4 hits. Offensively, Garcia, who has been a staple on the team since the 2019-2020 season as an eighth-grader, went 2-for-2 with a single and double while adding 2 RBIs. Robinson and Elena Eubank each had a single and triple while Eli Roque and Gonzalez each had a pair of singles.

The 11-1 victory gave the Fins a 10-4 record with one game to go before district play. Regardless of the outcome, Marathon will most likely face Mater Bay again, this time at Florida Christian High School in the first round of postseason action on Monday, April 29.

Coral Shores participates independently for softball, making them ineligible for district competition. The Lady ’Canes, whose roster was without an upperclassman, ended their season April 12 in a loss to Everglades City. The young team went 0-5 this season.

JOHNSON, ROSS TOP 10 IN STATE

Keys lifters compete among Florida’s best

Three Keys weightlifters qualified for the FHSAA 1A State Championships last week in Lakeland, representing Monroe County within an elite group of the strongest prep athletes in the state.

Marathon’s Chase Leird qualified in the 119-lb category after placing third in the region in the traditional event. Leird, a junior, had a phenomenal season for the Fins, and his trip to states this season should prove to be a valuable experience for his upcoming senior campaign.

Teammate Tanner Ross qualified in the Olympic event at 199 pounds. Ross qualified after placing fourth at regionals. He managed to boost his regional performance by 20 pounds to claim ninth place in the event. Like Leird, Ross is a junior with another season of eligibility remaining and, with that, another shot at a medal next year.

Coral Shores’ AJ Johnson qualified in both the Olympic and traditional events at 219 pounds. The senior strongman earned his ticket to states by placing second at regionals in the Olympic event and third in traditional. Johnson improved his performance in both events and placed eighth in Olympic lifts, cracking the top 10 and just two spots from a medal.
