ABOUT FANTASY FEST
Fantasy Fest is an annual 10-day costumed party in paradise. Started in 1979 by a small group of Key West locals, the party was created to bring visitors to the island in what was a typically quiet, but beautiful season. It worked. Fantasy Fest has grown every year since its inception and is now the wildest extravaganza around! Fun-loving revelers from around the globe bring their creativity and imaginations as they descend upon Key West each year in October for 10 days of costuming, libations and excitement.

PAYING IT FORWARD
PARTY WITH A PURPOSE
If you live in the Keys, or typically visit Key West in late October, it’s a safe bet that you love a good party. Started in 1979, Fantasy Fest began – in part – as a way to stimulate the local economy after the long economic drought of summer. It was also the birth of an enormously creative and wildly good time.
Now, 45 years later, the week remains the gold standard for debauchery. Thankfully, though, the roots run deeper for our community as hilarity combines with charity. Many events raise money for local nonprofit programs and projects. “Supporting our community’s nonprofits takes center stage throughout the week’s events,” emphasized Nadene Grossman Orr, Fantasy Fest producer.
Anyone looking to let loose and enjoy the festivities to the fullest can still party with a purpose and feel good about their life choices.
The grand dame of Fantasy Fest fundraising is the King and Queen campaign, which has raised over $5.5 million in its 33-year history. Candidates vying to be crowned Fantasy Fest royalty spend the eight or so weeks before Fantasy Fest fundraising their tails off. The two candidates who raise the most are crowned king and queen and reign for a year. The tradition continues this year with funds benefitting the Florida Keys SPCA. The rescued animals that reside at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm also get some love that week, with proceeds from the popular Pet Masquerade benefiting the beloved animal sanctuary and prisoner enrichment program — the only animal farm located at a county jail.
Local favorite MARC House allows people to clean their closets and purses by donating unwanted beads to their recycling program. They understand that the fun part is getting the beads, not finding a place to store them until next year, so this environmentally friendly program that benefits adults with special needs is win-win-win. MARC clients collect the beads, sanitize them in industrial washers and bundle them to sell next year.
While MARC helps keep plastic beads out of the ocean, Sunset Pier and Ocean Key Resort are also aquatically minded that week. Events at the two spaces will be accepting donations for MOTE Marine.
Fantasy Fest wouldn’t be nearly as much fun without a glittery nod to the local queer community. Fittingly, two events benefit diversity in Key West.
The (dare-we-say world-famous) Headdress Ball benefits the Key West Business Guild, which promotes LGBTQ tourism and supports gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses. A new event, the Romper Romp, supports Queer Keys, a recently opened community center that provides wraparound services and programming to support and empower the LGBTQ community.
If your love lies in supporting historical restoration, grab a seat at the viewing parties for the Hellings Curry Museum (home of the Key West Woman’s Club) or the Oldest House Museum and Gardens. Located directly across the street from one another, both offer prime locations to view the parade in its first few blocks.
Health care encompasses many realms, which Fantasy Fest is there to support. During the festivities, people will be *ahem* rocking their tatas in every way, shape and form. The Rock the Tatas party actually puts that carousing to good use for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Hank’s and Fat Tuesday will also donate funds to breast cancer awareness and treatment, while another well-known advocate of women’s health, Womankind Key West, will be raising money at its Barbie Pink Pool Party. Health also means ensuring food security for community members. Performer Mike Stack will contribute funds from his concert at Sunset Pier to SOS Foundation, which operates food pantries and provides meals to low-income school kids to help feed locals in need.
Community reigns above all in terms of Fantasy Fest beneficiaries. One of the island’s most prominent communities, Bahama Village, is home to the popular Goombay Festival, celebrating the neighborhood’s Afro-Caribbean heritage. The two-day festival that kicks off Fantasy Fest is organized by, and benefits the community through, the Bahama Village Community Coalition. The arts community of Key West will also benefit, with support from the Official Poster Signing Party at the new Tropicado Restaurant supporting the Florida Keys Council of the Arts. And the Keys always takes care of its kids. The Fantasy Fest Pickleball Tournament helps fund Keys to Be the Change Youth Programs, while Children’s Day (hosted by Historic Tours of America) benefits over 50 different children and family charities and always takes place on that hungover Sunday to close out the week.
2023 Headdress Ball winner: Erica Rachal, “Unicorn Realm”.
Fantasy Fest is an undeniable festival of fun. But rest assured, all the craziness that ensues is ultimately for the good of the community. The organizations here, as well as numerous others, depend on funds raised that week. For many, the wild final week of the spooky season will help carry their missions forward through the better part of the year.
FANTASY ZONE/COSTUME PROMINADE
ENTER THE FANTASY ZONE/COSTUME PROMINADE
On Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26, portions of Duval Street and the adjoining side streets will be designated as the official Fantasy Zone/ Costume Prominade. The city of Key West will temporarily suspend the open container law within the Fantasy Zone/ Costume Prominade for these two days ONLY. Revelers can stroll, march, rumble, rumba or merengue while enjoying cocktails along Duval Street from Front Street to Truman Avenue, as well as intersecting cross streets from Simonton to Whitehead Street.
For your safety, glass bottles are not allowed. Please use the Festival To-Go Cup available at local bars. Of course, thanks to our thoughtful city staff, all festivalgoers may properly dispose of drink containers in the many recycle bins available at Fantasy Zone exits.
PORT-O-LETS SPELL RELIEF
Port-o-lets are just about everywhere you may need to go during Captain Morgan Masquerade March and the Key West Fantasy Fest Parade. Fantasy Fest sponsor, Waste Management , is providing safe and clean relief stations bordering the Duval Street festival activities.
A MINOR REMINDER
All festival attendees must have been born on or before the current date in 2003 to purchase or consume alcohol. Please make sure you have appropriate identification in order to purchase alcoholic beverages. Any person who purchases alcohol for a minor will be cited and arrested. We want you to enjoy the festival so please be mindful of this law.

PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG
The Key West Tourist Development Association and the Key West Police Department welcome you to Florida’s premier masking and costuming celebration and encourage you to participate in all of the many exciting events that make up Fantasy Fest. THE TERMS AND LOGOS, “FANTASY FEST,” “FANTASY FESTIVAL,” “FANTASY WEEK” AND THE THEME, “IT’S A 90S NEON COSMIC CARNIVALE!” ARE THE SOLE PROPERTIES OF THE KEY WEST TOURIST DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. AND ARE PROTECTED BY LAW. ANYONE USING THE LOGO OR TERMS MENTIONED WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT FROM THE KEY WEST TOURIST DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW.
FANTASY FEST PARADE
EACH YEAR, THE KEY WEST FANTASY FEST PARADE winds through the world-famous Duval Street from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. Lavishly decorated floats and costumed revelers entertain tens of thousands of spectators in the premier Fantasy Fest event. With this year’s “It’s a 90s Neon Cosmic Carnivale!” theme, expect the 2024 Key West Fantasy Fest Parade to transport us back to the 90s through a cosmic portal and we will party like it’s 1999!
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
A special area for wheelchair-accessible viewing of the 2024 Fantasy Fest Parade will be available on Duval Street at Truman Avenue. Accessible parking and port-o-lets will be available near the Gato Building at the corner of Virginia and Simonton Streets.
BARRICADES
Barricades will be placed in congested areas along the parade route to keep spectators safe and to allow the parade entrants room to perform. These simple yet vital pieces of equipment can keep revelers from ending up under the wheels of a magnificent float. They’re put up with safety in mind, so please be a good sport when city employees begin setting them in place before the parade.
The parade needs extra leeway from the crowd at intersections where the procession makes turns. Please cooperate with parade ambassadors and law enforcement personnel to provide a safe turning radius for the parade vehicles.
Please be cautious around the barricades and step out of the way when city workers disassemble them after the parade. It’s a challenging job, at the end of a busy day, so please be appreciative when you see them hard at work.
PARADE AMBASSADORS
More than 100 Parade Ambassadors will be stationed along the parade route to help keep the spectators out of harm’s way and from under theTASY FEST PARADE wheels of the rolling festivities. These very special people stay sober on party night to be the responsible shepherds of the Fantasy Fest Parade.
You will recognize these noble, fun-loving people by their distinctive T-shirts. They each have undergone extensive training sessions for this very important job and they are in radio contact with the parade director and law enforcement personnel. Please let them know we appreciate them. Smile, thank them, and cooperate with their directions.
FANTASY FEST PARADE
IT’S POLITE TO ASK FIRST
Please ask permission before snapping photos of other party-goers and practice positive festival etiquette by treating other people’s costumes as works of art. Look and admire, but don’t touch!

FANTASY FEST PARADE GRAND MARSHALS
A PARADE OF POSITIVE ENERGY — THAT’S THE SPIRIT!
Wait, what?
David Sloan AND Robert the Doll are grand marshals of this year’s Fantasy Fest parade? Really? Isn’t Robert the creepy haunted doll who lives at a Key West museum? Isn’t that the doll that curses people and messes up their photos? Should we be worried?
Fear not, Fantasy Fest revelers. David Sloan knows Robert, or the spirit that resides in the eerie antique doll, better than any living person. The Key West author, entrepreneur, paranormal specialist and caretaker of Robert will lead this year’s parade with Robert atop a float with a cosmic portal to transport the crowd back to the 1990s for this year’s “‘90s Neon Cosmic Carnival.”
David recently sat down with Carol Tedesco to calm any concerns so everyone fully enjoys this year’s spirited celebrations.
Paranormal aficionados surround Robert the Doll, during an after-museumhours experience at Fort East Martello Museum in Key West. DAVID SLOAN/ Ghost Key West
Why were you and Robert the Doll selected as grand marshals?
Robert is a powerful doll. He once summoned Vince Neil from Mötley Crüe to his haunted fort at East Martello Museum, so I’m guessing he made this happen, too. I was happy to accept the honor because it brings attention to Robert and The Key West Art & Historical Society, one of Key West’s oldest non-profit organizations, and the trusted owners of Robert the Doll.
How do you get involved with the doll?
I started investigating Robert in 1996 before he was displayed as an artifact and was fortunate to uncover Robert’s true origins and solve some of his greatest mysteries. The Key West Art & Historical Society is obviously aware of Robert’s paranormal influence, but their primary objective is to protect the doll as an artifact. I’ve collaborated with them for a couple of decades. Since he arrived in Key West in 1904, Robert has always had a human companion who cares for the spirit that possesses him. Gene Otto was first. Myrtle Reuter then cared for him. They’ve both passed on, and I seem to have picked up where they left off. My company, Ghost Key West, operates nighttime ghost tours and The Robert the Doll Experience at Fort East Martello.
Will the real Robert the Doll actually be in the parade?
Robert is powerful, but the doll that contains his spirit is old, fragile and valuable, so it is only removed from the protective display case at Fort East Martello Museum if a hurricane is threatening the island. But man made barriers can’t prevent the entities inside the doll from traveling freely. So even if the artifact doesn’t leave the fort, I have no doubt Robert will be with us in spirit for the parade.
Fantasy Fest parade grand marshals continued
Robert the Doll has a reputation for cursing people who disrespect him. Should people be concerned?
The people Robert curses have been very disrespectful to him — sticking out their tongues or giving him the finger. If people are respectful, they have nothing to worry about.
Did you ask his permission to do any of this?
No. Asking permission from a powerful entity can be dangerous. It sometimes opens doors you can’t close. Robert never told anyone to ask for his permission. That’s a manmade legend a lot of people believe. Robert knows about the parade plans and seems to like them. Spirits rely on human energy to sustain them; they can’t just eat a sandwich for nourishment. And there’s enough human energy at Fantasy Fest to power the whole state of Florida, so I think Robert will be quite satisfied.
Is it safe to be around Robert? To photograph him? What are the rules? How do I avoid being cursed?
It’s very safe to be around Robert as long as you stay on his good side. He usually enjoys having his photo taken, too. The only rule I preach is respect. Respect the doll, respect the fort where he lives and no one gets hurt.
You launched an investigation in the 1990s into a mysterious portal believed to be contained within Robert. That investigation reportedly “unleashed a curse into the island’s cosmic realm.” Is it true you are seeking to reverse this curse during the Key West Fantasy Fest Parade?
The cosmic portal on our float will transport everyone in the parade back to the 1990s. If everyone along the parade route gets creative with their costumes and turns the celebration “up to 11,” we believe we can open the cosmic portal, transport Key West back to the ‘90s, and reverse the curse. Given this year’s theme of a “‘90s Neon Cosmic Carnival,” the reversal seems meant to be. And as we all know, such magic is not uncommon in the Florida Keys.
Will Key West ever be the same?
It never has been. It’s always been different. “They say 2000-00 party over, oops, out of time,” so this year I’m going to party like it’s 1999.
How can people communicate with Robert?
They can address mail and gifts to him at Fort East Martello. If they want to email him, there is a link on hauntedkeywest.com. I’ll read those letters to Robert myself.
What does Robert think about all of this?
We’ll know soon enough.

WE NEED YOUR BEADS
MARC HOUSE RECYCLES BEADS TO RAISE MONEY
The party’s over. The pictures are posted; your bags are packed and your head is pounding. But what about the beads? Tossed by the handful from parade floats and caught in mid-air by clamoring crowds, they were a priceless commodity just a few hours ago.
In the harsh light of day, reduced once again to a pile of plastic, they offer a stark lesson in the economic law of supply and demand — and a reminder of your airline’s weight restrictions. Do you really want to lug them home, only to lose the whole tangled mess in the back of a closet?
But what if you could turn those hard-earned beads into good deeds? What if a Key West charity that helps people with disabilities actually does have a demand for those beads? Would you consider donating your discarded beads? Of course you would. So do it. Please.
Pay your good times forward to the Monroe Association of Remarkable Citizens (MARC), a local nonprofit that teaches developmentally disabled adults life skills and job training.
For the past several years, MARC has been recycling Fantasy Fest beads to raise money for its programs. The bead recycling initiative has become a highlight of the 10-day party.
MARC clients collect beads in giant tubs at the end of the parade, and in collection locations around town, then wash and sanitize every strand in industrial washers.
They practice counting and sorting skills to bundle the cleaned beads into batches of 10, clipped neatly together. MARC then resells the beads the following year — in smaller bundles of 10 and in giant, 30-pound mesh bags to raise money for its programs.
Each year, the MARC clients clean, sort and then resell about 1,800 pounds of beads, and have sold out of them each subsequent year, contributing to the “greening” of Fantasy Fest, while helping revelers turn their beads into good deeds.
MARC’s float in the Fantasy Fest parade will feature giant hoops, targets and collection bins, encouraging parade spectators to toss their beads in and donate them for recycling.
KEY WEST
“When we’re able to explain to people in the crowd that we work with developmentally disabled adults, who recycle and resell the beads as a fundraiser, people can’t wait to help out. They’ll take the whole pile off from around their neck and donate them back to us. It’s been a great program,” a MARC spokesman said.
Beads are a depreciating asset. They lose all value by the time you reach your hotel room on Saturday night. But don’t toss them in the trash — and don’t buy new beads next year. There’s enough plastic in the world today.
Visit MARC at 1401 Seminary St., where the organization and its clients also run a nursery and plant store.
Donate your beads during this year’s parade when you see the MARC collection float at the end of the parade. Check your hotel for a collection box, or drop them off at the following locations:
MARC, 1401 Seminary St., Key West.
Key West Business Guild, 808 Duval St., Key West.
Key West Chamber of Commerce, 510 Greene St., Key West.

Food and activity prices vary – many items will be less than $5.
HELP KEEP FANTASY FEST® CLEAN AND GREEN
Putting together a waste management and recycling program for an event of this magnitude requires lots of people working together – including all of you fantastic visitors to our island paradise. Thank you for taking a few extra seconds to find a trash can or recycling bin.
Thanks to the efforts of our sponsors: the City of Key West and its Public Works and Community Relations Departments and Waste Management . Thank you to all the volunteers who help with the Captain Morgan Masquerade March and the Fantasy Fest Parade. Recycling is a priority and there are hundreds of trash cans and recycling bins available during Fantasy Fest.
Public Works will extend their pickup hours during the heaviest days of the festival. Please help when you see cleanup service vehicles. Let them through so they can continue the trash collection and cleanup efforts that make our city picture perfect!
