About the Festival & FKCFA The Key West Seafood Festival began in 2005, in part because of the devastating affects of Hurricane Wilma. The storm swept away the traps of many of the Keys fisherman, leaving them — literally — nothing to do. Local fisherman George Niles was the president of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association at the time. He and other members decided to use the down time to organize a festival to celebrate the industry, the lifestyle and, most importantly, the food. The festival, in its 12th year, has now expanded to two days, Jan 14 -15. Thousands of locals and visitors will head to Bayview Park to enjoy delicious local seafood, listen to live local music and meet the fishermen who make it all happen. “The festival provides a unique opportunity for us to showcase domestic seafood products, harvested, cooked and served by commercial fishermen and their families,” said Bill Kelly, executive director of the FKCFA, “along with two full days of entertainment and consumer awareness of the vital role commercial fishing plays in our local economy.”
FLORIDA KEYS SEAFOOD FESTIVAL The 12th Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Bayview Park, corner of Truman Avenue and Jose Marti Drive, in Key West.
There is a $5 admission charge per person for adults; children under 12 are admitted free. Parking info: $5 per car at Horace O'Bryant Middle School parking lot, 1105 Leon St., adjacent to Bayview Park.
The festival also has another important function. It generates funds for the group to protect the industry and influence fisheries management rules and regulations. The FKCFA turns 27 in 2017.
“Our association works hand in hand with local, state and federal agencies promoting safe harvesting methods while providing the safest seafood products for consumers around the world and we are recognized as a leader in cooperative marine research on spiny lobster, stone crab, fish and coral protection,” said Kelly. The seafood served is sustainably harvested with the highest regard for the Keys’ sensitive marine environment and the ecology that supports local livelihoods.

Butter, beer and battered fish at Bayview Park COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN TREAT THOUSANDS OF GUESTS An estimated crowd of 8,500 filled Bayview Park in 2016 to indulge in the celebrated bounty of the Florida Keys. The fare, caught locally by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association (FKCFA), included battered grouper, grilled lobster, stone crab and sumptuous Key West Pink Shrimp. Other dishes included conch ceviche, key lime pie and conch fritters. The event serves as the primary fundraiser for the FKCFA who uses the revenue to lobby and award scholarships for local youth.
Top left: Jason Yarbourgh (far right) and his crew dished fresh conch ceviche from a very large tub. Top right: Fest guests pinned their hometowns on the 8-foot map at The Keys Weekly booth. Based on quasiscientific data and very loose empirical evidence, it appears that residents of the Northeast are prone to travel some 1,800 miles for fresh Key West seafood — and some residents of the world even farther than that. Middle left: Adults come to the Key West Seafood Festival to eat; kids come to play!

FISHING IN THE KEYS THE BECKER FAMILY LEGACY By Hays Blinckmann Saltwater fisherman always have salt in their blood. And blood ties run deep in a family of Keys fishermen. In 1978, a young Buddy Becker moved to the Keys from Michigan and took a chance on fishing. Buying 200 used traps and borrowing a friend’s boat, little did Becker know he was starting a family legacy. For three decades, three generations of Beckers have been fishing the turquoise waters of the Keys, playing a part in keeping the fishing industry alive and prosperous in the islands.
Top: The Becker Brothers on the boat named for their mother, Martha — Michael, left, Mario, Alex and Roy. Right: As boys, brothers Mario and Roy Becker help prepare traps. Bottom: Michael Becker docks F/V Cap n’ Bud next to brother Mario Becker’s F/V Martha’s Pride.
“There’s always a job for someone to do, no matter how old,” said Capt. Becker, “In a fishing family it can be painting buoys, running ropes or tagging traps.” Becker recruited his father Herb Becker into the business, relocating him from Michigan, and raised four sons on the water. Becker, retired, now watches his sons run the fleet: Mario Becker, 26, Captain of 48-foot Martha’s Pride, Michael Becker, 24, Captain of 45-foot Cap n’ Bud, Roy “Creech” Becker, 28, Captain of 36-foot Miss Meagan and Alex Becker, 36 works with brother Michael on Martha’s Pride.

A fishing family can certainly see their share of stormy waters. The longest night of Becker’s life was Oct. 5, 2004 when F/V Little Joe had reportedly sunk with three sons aboard — Mario, Michael and Roy. Fortunately, by morning the Coast Guard was able to rescue all three. And the family waited anxiously at home while son Alex Becker served with the U.S. Army in Iraq. But their biggest battle was fought and lost when their beloved mother, Martha, passed away from cancer.
Bottom: The whole Becker family in the early days, parents Buddy and Martha with Michael, Mario Roy and Alex.
Supporting neighbors. Building community. For more than 140 years, BB&T has earned the trust of our clients with a local approach to banking. Understanding the fabric of our community. Being there when our neighbors need us. Encouraging what makes our community unique. That’s why we are proud to support the 12th Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival.
Commercial fishing has its challenges — government regulations, trap robbing, and start-up costs to each season. But the Becker family remain true to the salty waters of the Keys. Find them at the Key West Seafood Festival to say hello; they’re there year after year.
Proud to support the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association Left: Grandpa Herb Becker and Mario work a forklift.
“Her dying wish was that her boys stay together,” said Becker, who is the family patriarch now that his father, Herb has passed as well. The Becker family, together as their mother wished, now fishes 6,500 lobster traps and 5,000 crab traps while net fishing mackerel and kingfish.

The Regs are a pure, non-stop adrenaline, live rock ‘n’ roll band who perform a “rockstar quality” show. The driving sound wave is delivered by Scotty Migone, one of the very best guitar players. Little John is the front man, performing lead vocals for most of the show material and managing the business of the band. Kenny Wendland and Miguel Gonzales are veteran musicians, both accomplished touring and studio professionals, who deliver beat, bass line and vocals.
In 2011, the founding members of Haywire — Dave, Paul, Steve, Mike and Vinny — began to play in a studio for fun, with no aspirations beyond that. “We played the songs we loved and wished other bands would play live but never did.” From there, the band’s reputation spread like fire. So much so, that Dave named the group Haywire. Haywire started getting phone calls for gigs all over town, and up and down the Keys. They’ve played The Green Parrot, Cowboy Bill’s, Virgilio’s, Dante’s, the Bistro 31, the KOA Campground, Looe Key Tiki bar, Mangrove Mamas, San Carlos Theater, Shrimp Stock, tons of private parties and the list keeps growing.

THE BONE LEE BAND:
Sunday 2 to 5 p.m.
The Taylor King Band started out in Key Largo, but now performs all over South Florida. Playing at restaurants, bars, clubs and festivals in Monroe, Dade, and Broward County. They play a mix of well-known cover songs from various classic and current artists, plus original Taylor King Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Taylor King Band has four original songs from their self titled CD (April 2016) played worldwide on, iHeart Radio, SUN 103.1 FM, and WAIL 99.5 FM.
Bone Lee's musical shout-out is more like a rebel yell. The North Carolina native who now resides in Islamorada has been entertaining crowds with his hard rockin’ country blues’ sound and blistering guitar licks since moving to South Florida in 2000. Performing as a solo act, as well as sharing the stage with a revolving group of fellow musicians, Bone Lee's high energy, live shows include an electrifying collection of both original songs and cover tune favorites.

Seafood IT’S ALL ABOUT THE
The Key West Seafood Festival is the real deal. The event features fresh-caught, local seafood that is prepared and presented by local fishermen and their families. Dig In! Stone Crab Stone Crab meat is sweet and delicious and most commonly served with mustard dipping sauce. Did you know the fishery is completely renewable? Fishermen take only the claw before putting the crab back in the water. Lobster Fresh from the Keys waters is the Florida Spiny lobster, nothing like its Northern cousin from Maine. Our “bugs” don’t have claws nor grow as large and the meat is a bit saltier and a bit chewier than its Maine cousin. Grouper Grouper is an easy fish to love. The subtle, firm white meat has a mild sweet flavor easy to sauté, fry or pair with any other seafood. Great for fish sandwiches or seasoned on its own, grouper is a staple and local favorite.
20 2017 Florida Keys Seafood Festival / Key West
Key West pinks Shrimp found in local waters can grow to enormous sizes — think small lobster. At the seafood festival, they are served steamed, sprinkled with spices and ready to peel. The shrimp are sweet and plump and tasty. Conch Ceviche Ceviche is like a cold salsa made with raw fish. By the time it’s done marinating in the base of lime juice, however, the meat is considered “cured.” Ceviche also features a healthy dose of fresh cilantro and onion. Conch Fritters Conch is a shellfish, carefully harvested from gorgeous pink-lipped shells. The fish is cut into tiny pieces, or ground, then tenderized. It’s added to the fritter batter and dropped into boiling oil, served piping hot with a side of red, spicy cocktail sauce.

COCONUT FISH Fish fillets Panko flakes Shredded coconut 1 egg, beaten flour oil for cooking season to taste Mix panko flakes with some shredded coconut, (enough to cover fish). Dredge fish fillets in flour, then the beaten egg and then panko mixture. Season to taste with salt, pepper, dill or seasonings of your choice. Place in hot oil and pan sear on each side 2-3 minutes or until done. Remove with slotted spatula and place on plate. Serve with mango salsa or papaya chutney on top. This is a wonderful blend of flavors that can be used with any type of fish.

Cooking for classes The sixth edition of “Ocean Flavors” is available and worth every mouthwatering recipe. The cookbook is a labor of love of the members of the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association who collect recipes from friends and family. More than 500 recipes cover the gamut of goodies from appetizers to desserts, but the recipes are heavy on the delicious seafood plucked from the Keys waters. The recipes do more than make great cooks, however. It is the main fundraising tool of the FKCFA to provide scholarships for Keys students. Since 2006 more than $64,000 has been awarded with the long-term view of improving the Keys community. (You’d be surprised how many Keys captains have business degrees!) The Weekly selected three recipes to be featured in this guide.
