LOCAL CHATTER We know that Gretchen Wilson keeps her Christmas lights on her front porch all year long (“Redneck Woman”), but what about the rest of us? When is a good time to drag the tree out to the street? Unplug that cheery little blow-up Santa that blew into the bushes last week? When are people ready to declare that Christmas is over? We asked …

When’s a good time to take down the holiday lights and decorations? Capt. Bill Alck of Pigeon Key ferry still has most of his lights and decorations up. He’s satisfied with the status quo. “February is a good time, I guess. It takes all that time to put them up! Might as well leave them for a while.”

When it comes to taking down holiday decorations Marie Braun keeps the Catholic tradition handed down from her parents. “For me, it is January 6th, which is the Day of the Epiphany or Little King’s Day because that’s when the three kings actually made it to the manger,” she said. “So that was my traditional thing in my home, everything in the house stayed up until that day.”

After a good laugh at the question, Claudia McEwen said, “When it fits in your schedule!” Claudia is the producer and makeup artist for “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” currently playing at Marathon Community Theatre. “Last year, my wreath was up until Easter!”

Devin Clarke is not only the director of the play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” he is also the president of the Marathon Community Theatre’s Board of Directors. Needless to say, Devin has to keep organized and on schedule. When it comes to taking down winter holiday decorations, “I say, at the latest, January 2nd,” Devin said.

“I would say you can do it either right after the New Year. Some people wait a week. In my county, it’s after the 6th of January. But you know, some people do it right after Christmas,” said Beverly Hiatt. Beverly is a native of Nicaragua arriving in Miami in 1978, and coming immediately to the Keys.

Flotsam found, jetsam jettisoned Community’s grassroots effort to clean the harbor has a winner Contributed grassroots group of Marathon City Marina liveaboards has teamed up to create the “Nautical Obstruction Salvage Experts,” to clear the harbor of unwanted debris. Volunteers schedule collection times to receive the marina customer’s trash found in Boot Key Harbor and receive marina residents’ recyclables. Each item brought in has a point value, and the person with the most points during the month wins a small goody bag of prizes. December was the first month the program was in place, and the first winner is Charles Casey. Among some of the items he brought in were about 20 pairs of shoes, an old TV, a mattress, several plastic water bottles, and an assortment of other debris he collected from the mangroves. “The program offers double the points for old cruddy stuff, obviously collected from the water, and Charles racked up a whopping 520 points — a landslide win for him, and a definite win for Boot Key Harbor,” said Katrina Spelker, a city employee. “All the trash is being catalogued, and it will be interesting to see what a difference this makes during our annual Harbor Cleanup Day in March.” Of course, the award comes

with some serious swag. Casey won breakfast-for-two from Harbor Hillbillies, $40 in cash (donated by local liveaboards), and two tickets to any show at The Marathon Community Theater this season. The Marathon City Marina is currently recruiting more volunteers to collect debris on land and also donate their time to receive the offending matter. The organizers are also soliciting more prizes to give to the upcoming, monthly winners. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, the contest is only open to Marathon City Marina customers.

Do you know the difference? Flotsam is washed overboard, but jetsam is deliberately heaved to lighten a ship’s load.

The public watches the ceremony. The contents of the time capsule embedded in the wall of City Hall are unknown.

he Soldier Ride, sponsored by the Wounded Warriors organization, is a four-day cycling tour that takes wounded vets and a large entourage from Miami to Key West. They arrived in the Upper and Middle Keys on Friday and made their way to Key West for a tour of Old Town on Sunday. TO DO Seafood festival draws a big, hungry crowd Weekly Staff Report

T

housands of visitors and locals are sharpening their appetites for this weekend’s Key West Seafood Festival. In it’s 11th year, the event was created to showcase not only the bounty of Keys waters, but also the men and women who earn their livelihood at this hard, but fruitful, task. The festival runs Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17 from 11 a.m. on both days at Bayview Park in Key West. The festival closes at 8 p.m. on Saturday night, and a little earlier at 5 p.m. on Sunday night. Admission is $5 and the ticket doubles as a raffle claim — $250 worth of seafood to be given to the winner. The festival’s prosperity has roots in adversity. Local commercial fisherman George Niles said the seafood festival grew out of the devastation of the industry in 2005, after Hurricane Wilma blew past. “We had all the time in the world after that, because we had no traps,” Niles said. In addition to winning friends and influencing people with the great food and drink, the event also raises scholarship funds for the families of commercial fishermen. Since it’s inception, it has awarded $59,000 in education funds. So, what can visitors expect? Fresh stonecrab claws, grilled lobster and red grouper are the headliners on the menu. Plus, guests dig into Key West Pink shrimp, smoked fish dip, conch fritters, conch salad and conch chowder. There’s plenty of beer, wine, soda and water for sale to wash it all down. In addition, there will be almost 100 booths selling art, apparel, jewelry and educational booths with information about our delicate Keys ecosystem. The music starts as soon as the gates open and features the likes of Cory Heydon, Zack Seemiller, Nick Norman, Rusty Lemon and the Paul Cotton Band. Page 12 • Upper Keys Weekly • Jan. 15, 2016

FISHING Editor’s note: The following was written by a local wife who serves as “first mate” to her commercial fisherman husband. She chooses to remain anonymous. Of course, in this day and age there are a few “house husband” first mates who assist their captain wives. Regardless of gender or even familial relationship, this piece is a testimony to those that assist fishermen in their daily struggle to provide for their families, employees and the public that loves Florida Keys seafood so much.

The Real First Mate

An unidentified ‘first mate’ always helps in a crunch.

A moving tribute to the woman behind the captain

B

ehind every successful man is a woman. This couldn’t be more true of fishermen. The wife is more involved with the business than most people would ever realize. Of course there is the hired crewman that has this role, too. He does all the heavy lifting, cuts bait, builds new traps, repairs old ones and keeps the deck of the boat in order on a daily basis. But the real “go to” person is the captain’s wife. She might get up before the crack of dawn to discuss the day’s plan over a cup of coffee before her man heads for the boat. Or she might be lucky enough to sleep in ‘til the sun comes up, only to find a “honey do” list. But most importantly, if the mate doesn’t show up for

work ... she will get on the boat and drive, or gauge the fish, or push the traps off the stern, whatever it takes to get the job done that day. (She secretly enjoys a day on the water instead of the domestic chores of laundry and groceries, especially if it’s calm weather.) She is a good listener and is there to celebrate the good catch or hear about the day’s complaints, whether it be the price of the product, the crew, or some traps that were robbed. She knows that fishing revolves around the weather and she has no control over it. A true fisherman will be on the water every day he can if it is not blowing over 20 mph. That could be a long run from August to December with only boat maintenance days in be-

SALES SERVICE

tween. But a cold front from the north can throw off the whole fishing schedule. So a wife will take advantage of this time, and enforce some family downtime. Maybe even take him off the island and away from the business to unwind. She might even get in a little shopping out of it. In the off season, she is the official buoy painter and can usually get it done faster and neater than the crew. She knows how to tie a knot, drive a forklift and scrap a crab trap. She usually keeps the books for the business, writes all the checks for fuel, lumber and bait and is there to offload any deliveries. She can walk out ropes, weave in leads, tie a buoy to it and then tie it to the traps. She will tag the traps and make sure they all have one before loaded on the boat at the start of season. She keeps all the licenses, paperwork and Coast Guard inspections up to date. Since the convenience of the cell phone, she is there to take the call about the broken part and there to pick up its replacement and deliver it to the dock. This can save a costly down day. She knows how to cook a bucket of stone crabs, process a lobster tail and even filet a fish (but the captain can do it faster). Her hours, like her fisherman’s are not just 9 to 5, more like sun up to sun down. She is a special breed of woman, and God bless her if she has children to keep track of in the mix … She is not just a wife, but a partner in life — the Real First Mate.

KETTLEBELL SWING 1. Stand behind kettlebell with feet slightly wider apart than shoulder width. Bend over at hip with knees bent and back straight. Extend arm downward and grasp kettlebell handle with overhand grip. Lift kettlebell off of floor and pull forearm against inner thighs while keeping hips and knees bent with low back taut. 2. Drive hips forward, torso upright, and knees straight so kettlebell is pushed forward and upward. Allow kettlebell to swing back down. As kettlebell approaches lower position, fold at hips while bending knees. Forearm makes contact with inner thigh permitting kettlebell to swing back under hips. Immediately repeat movement and continue to swing kettlebell. Maintain shoulder to eye level height swings. — submitted by trainer Liz Kuck, Keys Strength & Conditioning. Did you know that eating an extra 100 calories per day above what your body needs can cause you to gain 10 pounds in a year? In order to lose 1-2 pounds per week you have to cut back 500 calories per day. Those 500 calories should come from changes in your diet and calories you burn through exercise. Be careful not to cut your calories too drastically; that can hinder weight loss. Keeping a food diary is the best way to see exactly how many calories and other nutrients you are consuming on a daily basis. Using pencil and paper or smartphone apps like MyfitnessPal or Lose It can help you track calories. The key is to record EVERYTHING you eat and drink and BE HONEST. — submitted by nutritionist Dana Hartley, Fishermen’s Community Hospital. To contact her, email dana. hartley@fhcares.com.

Goodbye, Rocketman Middle Keys entertainer passes away By Sara Matthis

R

obert Crelock Hudson — known to all as Rocketman — passed away on Jan. 8. Locals are mourning the death of a true Keys character. Rocketman, 76, was born in Memphis Tennessee. Among his most prized possessions were photographs of himself and Elvis Presley playing sandlot football, said local attorney William Heffernan. From there he joined the Air Force and then ended up in Las Vegas where he played the drums at big casinos with the band Wagon Wheels. “Rocketman came to vacation in the Keys,” said longtime friend and former owner of Porky’s Bayside Capt. Johnny Maddox. Like many others, he decided to make it his permanent home, in no small part because of the quality of the “recreation,” Maddox said. “He told me his first job in the Keys was as construction supervisor at the Safari Lounge,” said Heffernan. “The workers were building the balcony and they would see a bale floating by. They’d put down their tools and wade out in knee-deep water to retrieve it and then quit. He kept having to replace the crews and it drove him crazy.” After a brief sojourn in the Upper Keys, Rocketman made his way to the Middle Keys. He lived at a trailer park on Grassy Key for many years, quietly helping his elderly neighbors. But every weekend he was in the spotlight — as a founding member of the Florida Straits Band. The Sunday night jams were a huge draw with a revolving cast of musicians invited up on the stage to play a number or two. Tommy “Tunes” Stroup, who enjoyed a long friendship and professional relationship with Rocketman, said the popularity of the Florida Straits Band was indirectly responsible for the active live music scene in Marathon. Along with star visits from the likes of Clarence Clem-

ons and Robyn Robins from the original Bob Seger Band, regular Joes were invited to share the stage with the Florida Straits, too. “We had people in the audience that had put down their guitars for a couple of years, but once they were invited up onstage they got inspired. Next thing you know, they would be

Remember the world’s smallest museum? Rocketman was the proprietor of the establishment — a little travel trailer — parked outside Porky’s when he played. During breaks, he invited the public to tour it. Many left donations in a spittoon by the door, or purchased a small trinket. The treasures included Civil War-era relics, pirate memorabilia and more. It was reportedly even in the Guinness Book of World Records.

doing their own gigs,” he said. “But Rocketman was our drummer and our emcee and master of ceremonies,” he said. His charisma at the mic is what most remember. “It was his voice, I think,” said Heffernan. “It was soothing, but authoritarian. And he was the epitome of true diplomat. Everybody got a chance to play, and if they were truly terrible, he would clap and congratulate them right off the stage. ‘All right, all right, thank you very much, next act,’ he would say.” Rocketman was always at the head of the line to work the many benefits staged in the Middle Keys. So, when his house burned down in 2008, the entire town turned out for a fundraiser to help him replace the belongings he and his daughter, Roxanne, lost. Locals remember the community raised almost $40,000 for Rocketman. Before he helped found the Florida Straits Band, Rocketman formed the Tropical Depression Band and played regularly at The Hurricane. After, he started Page 18 • Upper Keys Weekly • Jan. 15, 2016

a long-running solo act at Porky’s that started when it was owned by Monroe County Commissioner George Nuegent and his wife, Suzy, then Maddox. His friends say he was heavily influenced by Buffett. “He had a lot of Jimmy Buffett songs. And ‘Midnight Special,’ we rocked that one,” Stroup said. “Of course, then there was Rocketman’s original song, ‘It Beats 40º Below.’” In later years, he was very impressed with pop star Katy Perry — his niece. “He was proud there was another entertainer in the family,” Heffernan said. Rocketman reportedly suffered a series of strokes in the last few years. Heffernan said he had a chance to see him at Fishermen’s Community Hospital last week before Rocketman was transferred to a mainland hospital. Stroup said his goodbyes a few years ago when he left the Keys. “We’re two men. Sometimes you don’t have to say anything. We knew each other well,” said Stroup. Marathon councilman and fellow musician John Bartus lamented his loss. “He was an ambassador of the Florida Keys and a local legend with a lot to give. He was a devoted father, fine entertainer and will be missed in this community,” Bartus said. A memorial tribute — with plenty of music — is planned in the coming weeks, to be held at Porky’s. Stay tuned to social media for more details.

by 6-inch canvas using acrylics, watercolors, mixed media and other supplies to support the fourth annual Florida Keys Council of the Arts Connection Project: A Mosaic of the Keys. Workshops up and down the Keys enable artists to come together to create a vibrant 24foot long project compromised of 400 canvases. When complete, the mosaic work will hit the road with multiple receptions in all areas of the Keys. “The Keys have a unique demographic reaching 100-miles from Key Largo to Key West,” said Arts Council Board Member, artist, and framer Sue D’Antonio, who was on hand to help at a workshop. “So, this is the perfect Keyswide project.” The Connections Project is one of the Art Council’s more innovative fundraising activities meant to bring the community together by providing a free canvas to anyone, from well-known artists to artistic residents, who is interested in being a part of the venture. Many well-known local artists choose to create their own small project. In previous years, notable local artists like William Welch, Rick Worth, Karen Beauprie, Richard Matson, Jim Salem, Ann Lynch, Kathleen De-

nis, Cris Sandifer, and hundreds more offered their work for the mosaic. About 80 percent of the squares are contributed by professional Keys artists, whose work sell for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. “The best part about this is everyone has a chance to receive a really wonderful piece of art,” said Arts Council Executive Director Liz Young. “Once the show is disassembled, donors will receive a randomly selected piece of the mosaic in the mail.” In a lottery-like distribution, donations are being accepted for $35 per canvas or three canvases for $100 to be sent out when the show ends in May. Each piece of the mural comes with an artist statement providing insight into the artist’s thoughts and inspirations. Donations can be made at keysarts.com or at any of the opening receptions. Proceeds from the mosaic directly benefit Keys’ artists and projects. The receptions begin on Feb. 2 in Key Largo and make their way down to Key West by April 8 with stops in Islamorada, Marathon and Big Pine Key. Tune into the Weekly Newspaper for details as the events near.

Best tank in the Keys Aquarium draws praise at Square Grouper Weekly Staff report

W

ho has the coolest aquarium in the Keys? That has to be Lynn Bell at the Square Grouper Bar & Grill on Cudjoe Key at MM 26. It was designed by the Fort Lauderdale company Living Color which is featured on the TV show “Fish Tank Kings.” “I sketched it out and they put it together in less than a year,” Bell said. The 475-gallon tank is square, of course, and features sunken “bales” caught in the roots of an artificial, but incredibly life-like, mangrove tree. The tree itself protrudes from the top. Tropical fish swim around bales emblazoned with the Square Grouper logo that references the locals’ terms for floating marijuana cargo often found in Keys waters in the 1970s and 1980s.

The 6.8 mile race requires that the 7 Mile Bridge be closed to traffic from 6:45 until 9 a.m. In an effort to grant Keys runners an advantage, organizers sat aside a registration block for Monroe County residents with photo ID, which opens on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 6 a.m. Those registering early must have a Keys address with a photo ID that matches that address. Registration for the general public will open on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6 a.m. Students attending Monroe County Public Schools are allowed to run the 7 Mile Bridge Run at a reduced registration fee of $20. leven players of Marathon High School’s varsity boys’ basketball team went on a trip north over their winter break with their coaches and some family members. They played two basketball games, watched a college match and toured Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Coach Kevin Freeman said the trip was possible because of generous do-

nors in Marathon. “Without the help of our community, this trip wouldn’t have been possible,” he said. After the college visit, the team also visited Washington, D.C. and Virginia including historical sites such as the Lincoln and Vietnam Veteran memorials. — Weekly Staff report CONTRIBUTED/Keys Weekly

MHS students prep for competition Upcoming dinners will fund trip to Orlando By Sydney Schuhmacher

O

n Sunday, Jan. 31, five Marathon High School students led by Chef Carl Stanton will be heading to Key West for the 22nd annual Master Chef’s Classic. It will be the fourth time Marathon’s students have attended, and for two years running the students have claimed second place in the dessert category. Last year’s dessert — mango key lime parfait — was such a hit it was featured in the cookbook “Florida Keys & Key West Chef’s Table.” The following weekend, the

culinary students will compete against students from more than 120 high schools at the Rosen Hotel in Orlando. That competition, the 16th annual Pro Start Culinary Competition, tests the kids’ mettle in various categories — Waiter’s Relay, Edible Centerpiece, Cooking Skills, and Management. Marathon is sending two teams with three students on each team. Stanton has placed Kayla Prince, Josiah Arce, and Chris Gaskill on the Cooking Skills team, and the Waiter’s Relay team is made up of Kyle Freeman, Noah Ross, and Manolis Tsarvaris. The top five student teams in each

category will receive prizes and scholarships, and the top two student teams in each category go to the National Pro Start Competition in April. Although the trip to Key West is within reach, the MHS culinary students have to do a bit of fundraising for the Orlando trip. The public can support the effort by attending both dinners planned this month: On Friday, Jan. 15 and Friday, Jan. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dolphin Bistro, located on the second floor of the high school. — Weekly staff report

wenty years and more than 24,000 students later, the state-wide Take Stock in Children program is celebrating success with its anniversary and a special celebration at the Studios in Key West on Tuesday, Jan. 19. From Key Largo to Key West, the program has hundreds of students in high school enrolled and can claim proud achievements with local high school teachers, police officers, boat mechanics and others who have graduated. Program Coordinator Chuck Licis welcomed Jillian Hasner, the new CEO of the program to Key West this December. “Key West has the largest number of high school students enrolled in one high school than any other school in the state,” said Licis. There are 101 students participating this year. Hasner met with students and mentors during her visit to Key West just prior to the school’s December break. Liscs attributes much of the success to devoted mentors who work with students throughout high school and on-site staff in the school. The goal of the Take Stock in Children Program is to have improved graduation rates and to help students enroll in college or a certificate program. Some students are able to attend college courses tuition free. Most find that a huge part of the financial burden of attending college is lifted and the other valuable benefit is a strong network of supporters. “For some students, they are Page 25 • Marathon Weekly • Jan. 15, 2016

the first in their family to attend college, so they can have questions that can’t be answered by someone back home,” said Licis. Providing more support for students in college is a state wide-goal, according to Hasner. She said the college graduation rate is 67 percent. “We would like to improve on the number,” Hasner added. She could not name a single area to

target to help students stay in college courses. “I believe that kids drop out for a variety of small reasons that build up,” she said. A college alumni group and college mentors available for students to call are among the supports that the Take Stock Program is putting into place.

he American Legion in Marathon is hosting a comedy night on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. with two imported comedians. Perry Sak is a South Florida transplant from Boston with a sharp wit and Andy Kern is a rising-star with Comedy Central credits to his name. “A comedy show seemed like a no-brainer when we were brainstorming ideas for fundraisers,” said American Legion’s DerAndy Kern rick Johnson. “Once we started thinking about it, we asked ourselves why we couldn’t do it. Comedy shows are always a crowd Perry Sak pleaser.” A Boston native living in South Florida for 15 years, Sak’s sharp-to-the-core, witty humor will have the audience rolling in the seats. Sak spends time entertaining people at casinos, comedy clubs, and colleges across the country. Growing up in the outskirts of Chicago, Kern dreamed of becoming a professional football player. Once he realized that wasn’t going to happen, he jumped into standup comedy. He went from the “Chitlin Circuit in South Central” to Comedy Central and VHI. He has performed in comedy clubs, colleges, on military bases, and at casinos from Canada to California. Tickets are $10 and proceeds form the night support the American Legion’s scholarship funds. The center focuses hands-on learning, turning the island and surrounding ecosystem into the classroom. KEYS DISEASE

Don’t be blinded by science

F

or centuries, there has been this divide between religion and science, as if the two were mortal enemies hell-bent on each other’s destruction. For example, the evolution debate: a debate so silly that it’s hard to believe that it’s still going on in Century 21. Unfortunately, when facts get in the way of closely held beliefs, it’s often the facts that are left behind. It’s a damn shame, because science and spirituality do not have to be mutually exclusive. Fundamentalism – in religion (or even science) – is dangerous. It encourages its followers to accept some sort of ancient text or teachings (or utterances from a leader) as dogma, not to be questioned. All else is false or blasphemous. Radical fundamentalist Muslims blow themselves (and many innocent people) up because they believe it to be the will of Allah as expressed in the words of the Quran. Radical fundamentalist Christians believe that the Bible is the literal, inerrant word of God. There certainly are inspirational words of wisdom to be found in the Bible, but in no way should one ever confuse it with a science text. The authors of biblical texts, and the later synods and councils that decided which ones were canonical, were not experts in astronomy, geology, physics, or paleontology. They had no knowledge of how our universe was formed, or awareness of the planetary dynamics of our solar system. So why do some people assume that the Bible contains a literal descrip-

tion of the creation of the Earth and heavens? God would have to be one mighty prankster to have given us all this astronomical and geological evidence about our origins and expect us to believe instead that the Earth is just 7,000 years old. Similarly, science can tell us an awful lot about our physical world, our geological history, biological processes, and the vastness of our universe. It’s not so good, however, at shedding any light on other important questions such as the meaning of life, why we’re here, or if there’s life after death. There are, however, a number of scientific studies about the neardeath experience, and how similar it has been for many people who have had them. People have literally died, left their bodies and can describe in amazing detail what was going on around them at their accident scene or the operating room, and can remember being told that it wasn’t their time and

they’d have to go back. Does our consciousness exist apart from our physical brain and body? Science will likely never determine the ultimate answer to that question – that will come down to belief and faith. As someone who was raised Catholic (and did a lot of my own comparative religion study) and focused on sciences during my high school and college years, I came to see that science and spirituality aren’t mutually exclusive. From the study of stuff as small as atoms and sub-atomic particles, to looking into the vast reaches of the universe, science shows just how amazing our physical world really is. The origins of life and the evolution of basic processes that lead to the incredible biological diversity we have on our planet in no way discounts or diminishes the existence or influence of a Supreme Being or cosmic consciousness. Images from technological advances like the

Hubble Telescope show us just how small we really are. Our planet revolves around a star that is one of about 200-400 billion stars in our galaxy, the Milky Way. As large as our galaxy is, it’s only one of about the 80 billion galaxies that exist in the vastness of the observable universe. To say that there is so much out there is still a drastic understatement. So if we did indeed evolve from apes over the course of our history, does that disprove

the existence of the Divine? Just because the Old Testament authors may have gotten the timeline of creation wrong, does that mean there is no God? Will science ever be able to conclusively prove what happens to us after we die? And just how did the Mayans get all their astronomical knowledge? There are still so many questions, and that’s a good thing. Part of our humanity is our quest for knowledge and our thirst for understanding.

nyone in South Florida wanting to see the top boats in the industry in one convenient location has had to fight the masses at the Miami or Fort Lauderdale Boat Shows. This January, however, that’s all changing with the first annual Island Boat Show, the Keys’ answer to an enjoyable weekend experience for those looking for a new boat. With 100 percent of the event proceeds benefiting the Island Christian School, the Island Boat Show, taking place Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23, offers the very unique experience of trying out multiple boats in one relaxed environment. Held at Hawks Cay Resort, Villas & Marina at MM 61, halfway between Key Largo and Key West, BRIEFLY Art Under the Oaks celebrates 33 consecutive years San Pedro Catholic Church’s annual Art Under the Oaks began in 1983 and has grown since then into a festival of fine art and original crafts, along with food, games and live music. The free event is set for Saturday, Jan. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.at San Pedro, MM 89.5, bayside. About 100 artists’ booths will fill the shady grounds. Interna-

boat shoppers can test ride boat from top manufacturers including Yellowfin, SeaHunt, HydraSports Custom, Everglades, Contender, Skeeter, Key West, Tidewater, Robalo, World Cat, NorTech, Deep Impact, NauticStar, Statement, Shearwater, Cobia, Sailfish and Bennington. The show will also feature fishing seminars by top Florida Keys fishing guides, including Capt. Rich Tudor, host of “Saltwater Experience,” the popular fishing show that airs on Fox Sports Sun, NBC Sports Outdoors and the Sportsman Channel. In lieu of an entry fee, the boat show will be accepting donations. The boat show will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public.

tional and American food vendors as well as a bake sale will feed hungry festivalgoers and a variety of music will enhance the atmosphere. Raffles of art donated by the artisans and a spin-the-wheel game of chance with grandiose prizes such as a fishing trip with Capt. Larry Sydnor are also planned. Musicians begin to play at 9:30 a.m. and include Charly; Diane Bello and Friends, and Jom Session. Luxury shuttle vans are new this year. The free transportation allows for parking at Coral Shores High School, MM 90, oceanside. Or guests can donate $5 for on-site parking when available. Page 20 • Upper Keys Weekly • Jan. 15, 2016

Pet Hospital earns ‘Cat Friendly’ designation Contributed

T

he Island Hammock Pet Hospital in Key Largo recently earned the American Association of Feline Practitioners’ (AAFP) designation as a “Cat Friendly Veterinary Practice,” the only one in the Florida Keys. The AAFP’s Cat Friendly Practice program seeks to improve the treatment, handling, and overall health care of cats by equipping veterinary practices with the tools, resources, and information needed to evaluate and improve the standards of care for cats. “To earn this designation, our veterinarians and staff have taken specific steps to ensure we understand and meet the unique health needs of cats,” said Martha Edwards, DVM, owner of Island Hammock Pet Hospital. “Because cats instinctively do not show vulnerability, pain or discomfort, specialized knowledge about them can improve the accuracy of diagnosis and quality of care provided to them.” To qualify for the designation, the Island Hammocks’ staff received training and education. The pet hospital, located at 98175 Overseas Hwy., Key Largo, is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Sundays. Emergency service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 305-852-5252 or visit IHPH. net for more information. Page 21 • Marathon Weekly • Jan. 15, 2016

tacked around buttons, burlap, scraps of cloth and more paint than one could ever imagine, artists and artists-at-heart had the opportunity to create a 6 by 6-inch canvas using acrylics, watercolors, mixed media and other supplies to support the fourth annual Florida Keys Council of the Arts Connection Project: A Mosaic of the Keys. Workshops up and down the Keys enable artists to work together to create a vibrant 24-foot long project compromised of 400 canvases. When complete, the mosaic work will hit the road with multiple receptions in all areas of the Keys. “The Keys have a unique demographic reaching 100-miles from Key Largo to Key West,” said

Arts Council Board Member, Artist, and Framer Sue D’Antonio, who was on hand to help at a workshop. “So, this is the perfect Keyswide project.” Many well-known local artists choose to create their own small project. Tune into the Weekly Newspaper for details as the events near.

Soccer stars Two Keys teenagers got a chance to boot the ball around with soccer star Jared Watts, a midfielder on the Colorado Rapids, a Major League Soccer team. Maxwell Potter, right, and Jake Webb, both play on the Coral Shores High School soccer team. After learning the star was in town, they arranged to meet him at Founder’s Park for an informal game. ‘What an awesome guy to meet and play with two teenagers on his vacation time,” said Heather Potter, mother to Maxwell. ‘The boys loved it and had a fabulous time.’
