news Madok declares candidacy for Clerk of Court Contributed Kevin Madok announced today that he has filed as a candidate for the office occupied by Amy Heavilin. The election is in 2016. “I’m running to restore competence and accountability to the Clerk’s Office,” said Madok. Currently, Madok serves Monroe County as Senior Director of Strategic Planning. Kevin Madok Prior to Heavilin’s arrival, Madok worked for eight years in the Clerk’s Office under long-time Clerk of Court Danny Kolhage. “During my years in the Clerk’s office, Danny Kolhage led a professional, respectful and hard-working team. Staff turnover was minimal, because we shared pride in our work and in our reputations. The Clerk’s office was a special place to work. I will restore that,” said Madok. In his current role with the County, Madok said he has saved the taxpayers in excess of $30 million by searching out innovative financing methods to fund the County’s capital projects. “I plan to carry these tax-saving efforts back to the Clerk’s office to restore fiscal discipline and the efficient use of taxpayer dollars.” Madok was recently appointed by the Governor to the Board of Trustees of Florida Keys Community College. Madok’s record of community service is extensive ranging from service to schools to Layton City Council. He became a CPA 25 years ago while working at KPMG and is currently licensed to practice in the States of Florida and California. Kevin resides on Big Pine Key with his wife of 17 years, Katrina, a teacher of the gifted program at Gerald Adams Elementary School. He is a member of St. Peter Church. “Mentors open the doors of possibilities, putting the students on a path of success,” said Take Stock in Children President and CEO Madeline Pimariega during the ceremony when 50 students graduated from the program last Saturday. The program has graduated 521 students overall, with an average 3.5 G.P.A. Congressman Carlos Curbelo was on hand for the event and said he was honored to share this occasion with the students. “Education can take you anywhere,” he said to the students. “Take Stock gives students who show potential a springboard for success. Success is different every day and different for every person. Continue following your success.” John Padget, Vice Chair of the State Board of Education, said the objective of Take Stock is for students to achieve their dreams without ending up with any real college debt. The graduates receive full scholarships for four years of education. Many of the students also qualified for two years of free room and board. “Live your life with purpose and passion,” said Pimariega. “That will always guide your way.”

Why Should We Confess Our Sins to a Priest? In the Old (Lev 19:20-22) and New Testament ( John 20:22-23), God uses His priests to communicate His forgiveness. Confessing ones sins to another is a humbling experience when compared to confessing alone with God. Also, once our sin is revealed, the verbal counsel we receive to overcome that struggle is invaluable. We are a people of senses and hearing the words of absolution touches our hearts and frees us to love and to be loved. Since our Lord designed us this way, He also established a one on one experience using His priest's which creates a very personal encounter within the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Today will you choose to seek His forgiveness and be set free?

"Then He breathed on them and said "Receive the Holy Spirit". If you forgive men's sins, they are forgiven; if you hold them bound, they are held bound".

An MRI explained ... Contributed What is an MRI? Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most accurate and advanced imaging tests available today. MRI technology uses a magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to take dozens of three-dimensional images of the inside of your body. The exam is noninvasive and does not involve radiation. The images produced are much clearer and more detailed than X-rays - helping your doctor give you a better, earlier and more complete diagnosis. Preparing for your MRI Your comfort during the procedure is one of our highest priorities. We can achieve it through your help with the following: • Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of time to complete the necessary paperwork. • Please remember to bring your insurance card, your referral form, a current list of medications, previous X-rays and any CT and MRI films/CDS. • Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and leave all valuable items at home. Avoid underwire bras, girdles, metal snaps and pins. • Please remove all eye makeup prior to your exam. Some makeup contains metals that can distort MRI images. • You may eat and drink normally prior to your MRI procedure. • If you are claustrophobic you may want to ask your doctor to prescribe medication to help you relax during your exam. All medications should be taken as prescribed. During your MRI An MRI technologist will escort you into the scanning room and will help you lie down on a cushioned table. A pillow and blanket will be provided for our comfort during the exam. Some patients may require a contrast material to enhance the visibility of certain tissues or blood vessels. If your physician has ordered this for you, it will be given intravenously prior to the start of the MRI exam. Next, you will be positioned Page 13 • Marathon Weekly • June 5, 2015

on the table and moved into place for the procedure, which you can expect to take 30-50 minutes, depending on the body part being studied. Once the exam begins, you will be asked to lie as still as possible to make sure the images captured are clear. You will hear a knocking or thumping sound during the exam. Don’t worry; these noises are all part of the scanning process. Earplugs, headphones and music will be provided for your comfort. We want you to be calm and relaxed during your MRI exam. If anything concerns you, please do not hesitate to let us know. A microphone system will enable you to talk with your technologist at any time during the exam. Please notify Us For your safety, some conditions may prevent you from having an MRI. If any of the following apply, please tell your

doctor or MRI technologist, or let the center know when you schedule your appointment. • Cardiac pacemaker • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) • Cochlear implant(s) • Prosthesis within your body • Aneurysm clips (magnetic) • Metal fillings/fragments in your eyes or body • Body piercings or tattoos • Pregnancy After Your MRI When your procedure is finished, you should feel no side effects and can resume your normal activities. The MRI technologist prepares your images for the radiologist to evaluate. The radiologist interprets your results and writes a report. The report is then sent to your doctor. Your doctor will talk to you about your MRI results and next steps. —Contributed

N

owhere Bar and Grill, the family-friendly new restaurant at 11399 Overseas Highway, offers delicious food from just about everywhere. After living and working in the French Quarter of New Orleans for years, with Miami roots and Texas flair, owners Dave and Dodie Rodriguez, with their children Todd, Megan, Richard and Nikki have literally raised the bar for good home cooking in the Keys. When they moved into the place in August and started a three-month renovation, the first thing that was fixed was the bar, which was too high to be comfortable to sit at and have a couple cocktails. “So, we raised the floor to make the bar a comfortable height,” said Dave, then joked, “We weren’t going to lower the bar for any reason.” Nowhere, not lowering the bar, shows with their extensive full bar and well-thought-out menu. Menu items include the popular Cuban Rueben with in-house roasted Cuban pulled

Page 14 • Marathon Weekly • June 5, 2015

pork, Virginia baked ham, Swiss, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island on rye. If you like Cuban food with a kick, this is the place to be. The Sloppy Jose Sliders also brings the family’s Miami roots to the table. Three sliders are presented on a sweet bun with Cuban-style picadillo, topped with fried sweet plantains. The plantains bring the perfect sweetness to the easy-to-eat sliders. Speaking of sliders, their weekly Wednesday slider night offers $1.25 buns filled with favorites like the Sloppy Jose, Marathon Mahi in a tasty garlic aioli, kicked-up burgers, pulled pork, and buffalo chicken. The night starts at 4 p.m. and goes until close. The Everywhere Chicken Sandwich shouldn’t be missed either. “It has a little bit of everywhere on a bun,” said Dave. With Teriyaki chicken, Virginia baked ham, Swiss cheese, and

French Dijon mustard on a Kaiser, the sandwich pulls from the cuisine of many continents. The Rodriguez’s started visiting the Keys when living in Miami. They were high school sweethearts who reconnected 30 years later in Texas. They both started vacationing in the Keys again and would visit for one week, then the next year it turned into two weeks, and after that, a month, until they made the move to Marathon to retire at 45 years old. “The kids talked me out of retirement and into the restaurant,” Dave and Dodie said. Dave likes to spend his days fishing and Dodie spends some evenings at Nowhere seating and chatting with customers. Sons Richard and Todd have backgrounds in cooking and restaurant management. “It’s quite the family affair here,” Dodie added. The family’s tight connections are shown throughout the Page 14 • Upper Keys Weekly • June 5, 2015

(cont.) restaurant with board games lining one wall for keeping family dinner nights sacred. “I had one mom tell me it was so nice to have a meal with her kids with their cell phone put away playing games,” Dodie said. Games include Connect Four, cards, and Apples to Apples, a popular questions game that kids love. “It’s tough to keep kids occupied.” A popular dinner dish is the Crossroads Coconut Snapper. Flaky fillets in a panko coconut breading served with knockyour-socks-off mango lime chili sauce and Caribbean coleslaw. For less than $18, it’s a real deal and it’s the mango lime chili sauce that has the best backstory. While working in a mission in Texas, which Dave did for four years before retiring, he once had a man come in asking if the mission needed any mango jam. The next day a pallet of the jelly was delivered. “I had to come up with some creative ideas for the jam, and the sauce was created,” Dave said. “Everyone loved it.” For desserts, the homemade Rosina’s rice pudding comes from a family recipe passed down by Dave’s grandmother. The “Fried Yummers” are little beignet-like dough with a sweet homemade key lime dipping sauce. The crème brule is silky and delicious and made with real vanilla beans. Dave and Dodie took a step back from the business now that it has established. “The kids are mostly running it and doing a great job,” they said, adding that they still show up to help out. Especially on karaoke night; Dave is best known as “This Singing Chef.”

Spearfishing in full swing for summer

Two tournaments set for June By Kristen Livengood

Ginger Henderson - Represented the Buyers of 240 13th Street, Key Colony Beach

• The King of the Keys Spearfishing Tournament is looking to step up and take the place of local tournaments that have fallen on the way side over the years, especially the defunct Key West Open. At one point, it was possibly the biggest spearfishing tournament in the United States. “When I first moved here 11 years ago, there was three big tournaments in the Keys, now there is a lack of them,” said King of the Keys founder Jason Tiller. The aggregate tournament will be based around numerous categories that will create a smorgasbord of fish for the taking. Aggregate rules include 15 points per fish, with one point per pound, and no cap on weight. One fish is allowed in each category with 28 different species that can be weighed,

which include fish from reefs and wrecks (hogfish, groupers and snappers), and openwater pelagics (wahoo, dolphin and tuna). There will be freediving and tank diving categories and an overall winner. Rules include all participants must leave and land in the Florida Keys and all contestants are required at

a captain’s meeting on Friday, June 12 at Hurricane Hole Marina. Weigh in begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 and all fish must be in by 7 p.m. “Having all of these categories will help the little guy, since the biggest grouper isn’t going to take the whole tournament,” Tiller said. “It seems like a lot of fish, but none will be wasted, and anything anyone doesn’t want to keep will be donated to the homeless shelter.” Registration is $80 and includes a T-shirt. Women and junior divisions were just added due to interest. Tiller expects about 75 participants if the weather cooperates. Prizes include custom spearguns and other spearfishing swag donated by local shops, and awards created by Marathon metal artist Caleb Goins. For more information, visit kingofthekeys.com. “We are really hoping for a successful tournament,” he said, “then, maybe, we will be able to put on a couple more a year.”

A world-record cero mackerel was shot using an Impaler. Here, Jason Tiller, is building a custom Impaler speargun.

Impaler: Speargun Extraordinaire Jason Tiller, the founder of the King of the Keys tournament, is also the creator of one of the hottest spearguns on the market right now, The Impaler. With more than 20 years of woodworking experience, his guns also include popular, almost indestructible, carbon fiber materials. “We use really good components and are constantly evolving,” Tiller said. “We spend a lot of time collecting the right stuff – grips, handles – and the guns reflect it.” The Impaler comes in numerous sizes crafted right in Key West, covering 200-pound yellowfin tuna and the fastest fish in the sea, to smaller fish, like hogs. More information on his guns can be found at impalerspearguns.com.

Army man shares 7 tips for success Commence Speaker LTC William ‘Brandon’ Welsh of the United States Army told the graduating students what he would have wanted to hear 30 years ago when he was sitting in that spot. He added that, unfortunately, he probably wouldn’t have listened to it. 1. Remember to have an incredible sense of gratitude for the community that has invested in you and your country. 2. You are now responsible to train yourself. 3. Life is unfair. Don’t give up when life throws you lemons.

4. Become a master of time management. ‘Forty hours a week goes toward survival, the rest is for success,” he said. 5. Surround yourself with people who will help you become the person you want to be. 6. Realize you will fail, but it’s up to you to learn from it.

Florida Keys first Plantapalooza Coral Restoration Foundation hosts Plantapalooza to celebrate and bring awareness to World Oceans Day

M

ay 26, 2015- Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) plans to celebrate World Oceans Day on Monday, June 8 by hosting its first ever Plantapalooza. World Oceans Day provides a motivating platform for this event where CRF staff, interns, volunteers, and board members will work to plant 1,000 staghorn corals on reefs in the upper Florida Keys. World Oceans Day is celebrated internationally each year and CRF’s Plantapalooza aims to bring awareness to World Oceans Day in the greater Florida Keys community while planting a record-breaking number of corals in one day. The theme for this year’s World Oceans Day is “healthy ocean, healthy planet” a theme that can be carried forward even after the event and an ideal that CRF promotes daily. CRF is a lean and effective coral planting machine. Eight

(cont.) staff members lead the charge in getting corals back onto the reefs throughout the Florida Keys. Volunteers, dive shops, and international travelers aid in restoration efforts by participating in dive programs where participants get an immersive coral nursery and outplanting experience. Over 1,000 divers participate in the CRF recreational dive programs every year. In 2014, restoration efforts by CRF resulted in over 15,000 corals outplanted on Upper and Middle Florida Keys reefs. These successful outplantings were made possible by the development of effective and simple coral growth and outplanting methods, two important elements of the CRF mission. CRF hopes events like Plantapalooza will bring even greater awareness to the importance of restoration, preservation, and conservation of corals and the world’s oceans. This event is made possible with the support of our community sponsors and partners: CRF looks forward this event on June 8, please contact CRF directly (ashley@coralrestoration.org) for inquires about the event and community participation. Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit conservation organization headquartered in Key Largo, Florida created to develop offshore coral nurseries and restoration strategies for critically endangered coral reefs at local, national, and international levels. To learn more about the restoration efforts of CRF, visit www.coralrestoration.org.

The tough tri harder 9th Annual MaraTri brings out swimmers, bikers and runners Memorial Day weekend brought out local triathletes for the 9th annual Marathon Triathlon event at Sombrero Beach. The multi-sport, multi-distance event raises money for local youth athletics while encouraging use of the great outdoors in the Florida Keys. — Weekly Staff report SARA MATTHIS and KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly 1. Podiatrist Brad Makimaa, 44, of Key West won the mini tri with a time of 39 minutes, 4 seconds.

Logan Sipe, left, Audrey Matthis, and Matthew Pinkley finished in 38.14, just a few seconds shy of the course record of 37.35. (That one was set by Logan’s dad and two other grown men. Shots fired.) 4. These triathletes, most of them Keys Strength and Conditioning gym rats, were presented the award for most creative. Their 80s workout gear was a hit at the event. 5. he number one Relay for Life team in the state of Florida will be paddling through the Keys next week. The Castaways Against Cancer team will depart from Miami on Friday, June 6. By the time the work week is underway, they will be joined by Marathon’s Suzy Curry — a guest paddler for the 16th annual, 150-mile paddling event. She went from dishing out her famous banana pudding for the weary kayakers every year to volunteering to join the dozenman team for five days of kayak travel. “I’m in awe of what these guys do. They are wonderful men,” said Curry, a breast cancer survivor. “Plus, this has been on my bucket list and my husband got me a new kayak for my 60th birthday.” She has been training faithfully since September. Typical runs are from Coco Plum to Duck Key and back. Or Long Key to Islamorada. “There’s actually two parts to this. Our mission is to help find a cure, that’s the fundraising part; and to honor those who fought the fight, that’s the paddling side,” said Patrick Linfors, captain of the excursion. Since the first Miami to Key West kayak trip in 2000, the Castaways have raised more than $610,000 in the fight against cancer. The funds are handed over to the American Cancer Society. In 1998, the founder of the group, Steven O’Brien, lost both his mother and his aunt

to cancer. O’Brien is fond of saying that he decided to “light a candle, rather than curse the darkness,” and the idea of the Castaways Against Cancer was born. Each member of the 12-man group – comprised of teachers, oceanographers, lawyers and even Boy Scout executives – has a story to tell of their personal reasons for fighting back against cancer. “When I started 16 years ago, I was just a young kid out of college looking for the next great adventure,” Linfors said. “Since then my wife, my brother and my sister-in-law have all battled cancer. My dad is fighting it now. Thankfully, they are all survivors but it has become so much more personal for me.” In the last six years, Scott Anderson has lost his grandmother and father-in-law to cancer. “My father-in-law was a 25year Marine Corps veteran,” said Anderson. “He was a tough guy.

It was something to see how cancer decimated his body. To watch that happen was very difficult. And over the last 16 years, we’ve met thousands of people that have a similar story.” On their journey, the Castaways Against Cancer collect names of those who have fought, or are fighting, cancer. “If they give us a dollar, we add the names to the list in perpetuity,” said Linfors. “If they gave us $1 five years ago, we still read the names at our closing ceremony.” The Castaways only have wonderful things to say about their journey through the Keys every year. (Except the weather; Mother Nature was pretty brutal in 2013.) In 2014, the Castaways raised $135,000 for Relay for Life Team, earning the No. 1 rank in the state of Florida. For more information, or to donate to the cause, visit www. castawaysagainstcancer.com.

The paddlers will at Sombrero Beach on Wednesday, June 10 at midday.

astaway Waterfront Restaurant in Marathon is known for its lionfish recipes and local friendly vibes, but it will soon be known for its Basil Smash, served by bartender Tim Shifflett, who works on Tuesdays and Saturdays. “It might not be the most popular drink,” Shifflett said, “but it is the best in my opinion.” The drink is vigorously shaken in ice with Hendricks gin, lemon, basil and a little simple syrup. It is then strained over ice and garnished with a basil leaf. “You can’t make it with any other gin than the Hendricks,” he added. “It just won’t work.” The refreshing summertime drink leaves a crisp aftertaste perfect after a day on the water or at the beach. If the idea of gin leaves the drinker skeptical, prepare to be a convert. “It makes people who don’t usually like or order gin, like gin,” Shifflett said. Castaway’s also serves up 37 beers on tap (yummy ones like Big Wave and Sculpin) and has drink specials like the Sailor’s Painkiller, which is a popular drink special. Castaway has an old school Marathon vibe and is located at the end of 15th Street at 1406 Oceanview Avenue and open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.

mhs student of the week Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly. What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am currently involved in two sports — swimming and tennis. They are very important to me because they keep me healthy and well-rounded. I am also very involved in the drama club. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS or MMS and why? My biggest inspiration has been Ms. Cox. She always pushes me to do better with whatever I am a part of and is truly a second mother to me. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think that AP Human Geography has prepared me because it has taught me to stay on top of my work and to be prepared in life. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? In the world today, all people are worried about is technology. No one realizes that the best forms of entertainment are outside. I think my parents understand that because it was the only entertainment they had.

What advice would you give to a sixth grader entering middle school? I would tell sixth graders that their middle school years really do matter. They need to try hard and focus because they learn some very important information in those early years. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? I really love the movie “The Sound of Music” and I identify with Maria. She loves to sing, much like myself, and also likes to cheer up others when they are feeling down. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? One of the biggest challenges is the enormous amount of tourists that are coming to visit and then staying. We cannot keep building houses because soon enough there will be no space left. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? I would advise him to focus on education. Get every kid in the U.S. an education so they can do something great with their lives and eventually provide for their families. What are your plans after high school? My plans are to go to college and pursue a degree in marine biology. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to find a few amazing friends that will stand by you no matter what.
