KEY HEALTH How can the ‘Relaxing Mineral’ help you? How magnesium supplements can support stressful lives Life is full of ups and downs, although sometimes the ‘downs’ can be harder to bounce back from than we’d like them to be. Daily stress and anxiety rise as our lives get more hectic and demanding and, for many, a stressful life is the norm. Luckily, there’s a way to tackle the physical effects of stress and anxiety. According to a growing body of research, tackling many of the stresses of modern life could be as simple as supplementing with magnesium, the ‘relaxing mineral’. Body and Mind Needed in over 600 enzymes within the body, magnesium is truly the body’s workhorse. A body that lacks magnesium may struggle to work, as muscle function, bones, teeth and energy production all depend on the mineral. Not only this, magnesium contributes to a healthy nervous system and psychological functions as well, hence its reputation as the relaxing mineral. Anxiety and Mental Health Low magnesium levels alter the body’s ability to cope with the physical effects of stress and anxiety. In fact, magnesium deficiency has been associated with depression, irritability and even confusion. Magnesium is thought to support healthy brain functions thanks to its ability to both bind to and stimulate receptors of the ‘antianxiety’ neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is able to reduce excessive neuronal activity in the brain without it, we would never be able to relax. By stimulating GABA, magnesium can effectively ‘put the brakes’ on excessive activity in the brain linked to anxiety, insomnia and even migraines. Chronic Stress Magnesium may be beneficial for those who experience chronic stress in various ways. Firstly, magnesium has been shown to reduce over-activity of the series of glands (known collectively as the HPA axis) which would contribute to high levels of the main stress hormone, cortisol. Furthermore, magnesium has been shown in various trials to reduce the overall levels of cortisol, thus helping to protect the body from the negative effects of stress. Improved sleep Trials have shown that magnesium supplements may help achieve a good night’s sleep. In one trial, those who took magnesium supplements over a period of 8 weeks had improved sleep quality versus those who took a placebo. Furthermore, those taking magnesium experienced better control of their cortisol levels. Previous research has also linked low magnesium to so-called ‘restless legs syndrome’, with a 2004 study showing magnesium supplements help prevent insomnia caused by the condition. Migraines Low magnesium levels have been associated with migraines,

By Pharma Nord

with supplementation shown to help alleviate symptoms. In various trials, magnesium is able to reduce migraine severity when compared to a placebo. Magnesium is necessary for vitamin D function If you’re like many who take vitamin D supplements to support immunity, bones, mental health and general well-being, magnesium is an important addition. Adequate magnesium is essential for the proper working of vitamin D3 in the body, including its conversion from calcidiol (the stored form) to calcitriol (the active form). What should you look for in a supplement? There are multiple forms of magnesium available, with various levels of effectiveness and quality. Magnesium supplements with multiple sources for instance, can offer a balance of absorbable magnesium that is also gentle on the stomach. Quality assurance is also an important factor in supplement choice, with those produced under pharmaceutical control offering the best peace of mind in terms being true to the label claim and free of contaminants. Pharma Nord’s Bio-Magnesium is made under pharmaceutical control from three different sources of magnesium and is so gentle it dissolves in a glass of water.

KEY HEALTH Skin Care Rules

By Anne Stark

We have all heard about double cleansing and that it is important that wellcleansed skin does not have any residue in it. The best way to do this is to buy a good quality cleanser which is water soluble and then rinse with water. If you like to use toner, then use it with a cotton pad. Exfoliation depends on your skin type, lifestyle and make up habits, but is a must. Depending on the quality of product you use, only you can make the decision how often to exfoliate. My clients often tell me that they buy all these expensive creams and they do nothing for their skin. The reason is that small molecules cannot penetrate through to the lower levels of the skin because old cells create a barrier preventing the small molecules from passing through to this level. For glowing skin you will need adequate home care and also treatments by a professional. Microdermabrasion is one of the best treatments for glowing skin and the right products are essential. Utsukusy Japanese Formulation is made in Spain and these are my new products for you to try. The age-killing, botox-like effect helps to repair the visible damage to the skin, fills the wrinkles with the botox effect and extends the skin’s youthful appearance. Dragon Blood regenerating and healing action is perfect for home care use after an aggressive treatment such as micro-dermbrasion or micro-needling. Resilience reduces and removes wrinkles with a lifting effect. It’s a must for those of us over 40. Cu palmitoyl heptatide 14 and 15 cream and serum reduce and remove wrinkles with a lifting effect. Serums and creams also come in a handy 15ml size either for you to try, or they are ideal for travelling. Summer will soon be here. Everybody needs a foot treatment. My Yumi Feet Medi-Pedi is my new creation. To my delight it has been well received. This pedicure gets rid of all the hard skin and for those who like painted nails, I have a selection of colours to suit all tastes. As you know I am a big fan of massage. My massage is a Deep Tissue Therapeutic, Finnish Massage for sports injuries, tension and general well-being. I invite you to try all of my treatments. I will make sure you are not disappointed. Have a great summer!

KEY HEALTH Why GLC2000?

By Mike Izon, Sports Massage Marbella

Used by athletes and those with joint issues, GLC2000 takes the science of joint supplementation to the next level. Our results-driven formula provides the highest quality pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, all four readily absorbable forms of glucosamine that your body can use, alongside the purest chondroitin sulfate. The result is a product that has made a difference to tens of thousands of people over the course of a decade and a half. Our joint and connective tissue work as hard as muscles. Yet it’s much harder to get key nutrients of chondroitin and glucosamine, used by the body for cartilage, tendon and ligament recovery, through diet. Supplementation has been proven to reach joint tissues in anabolic quantities. So your body has the building blocks it needs to recover naturally. GLC2000 provides the highest dosage of pharmaceutical grade glucosamine available on the market. The Missing Pieces GLC2000 combines all four useable forms of glucosamine and the most absorbable chondroitin sulfate; providing the strongest patented joint formula on the market, proven to increase absorption for unrivaled results. GLC2000’s main ingredients, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, are both naturally produced by the human body. Repair

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are important structural components of cartilage and connective tissues. Glucosamine plays a regulatory role in the creation of healthy new joint tissue. Degeneration Higher levels of Glucosamine and Chondroitin in cartilage, connective tissues and the joint capsule are associated with fewer destructive enzymes. Strength Glucosamine and chondroitin provide structural support to cartilage and connective tissues; this helps resist external stress, allowing joints to absorb shock, helping you move safely and effectively. Sliding Surfaces Glucosamine and chondroitin are vital to healthy synovial fluid, which allows bones to move smoothly in the joint capsule, and ligaments and tendons to move freely. Hydration Chondroitin is a vital structural element that draws up to 100 x its weight in water into joint tissues, ensuring tissues are firm and strong. Reduce Inflammation Glucosamine and chondroitin are powerful, anti-inflammatory agents on a cellular level. GLC2000 has been shown to aid in reducing the degeneration of joints in arthritis and rheumatism. To order, phone Mike at Sport Massage Marbella +34 606 867 821.

KEY HOLISTIC The Burden of Back Pain –

and how Sound Massage can help you We can all relate to the burden of back pain and the many challenges of our day-to-day life proverbially rest on our shoulders, combine those with repetitive tasks and poor posture, the result is an aching back. Probably every other person complains of occasional or even chronic back pain. Sound Massage Therapy for Back Pain There are many potential causes of back pain and, in any event, these should be medically evaluated prior to any therapy. Stress is a primary cause of back pain. As a study conducted by the European Professional Association for Sound Massage Therapy with more than 200 participants could show, regular sound massages promote positive ways to manage stress and increase the feeling of Wellbeing in and with your own body. When dealing with stress-related symptoms, Sound Massage, as a holistic means of relaxation, is ideal for supporting traditional treatment methods and has an especially important role in health support. When applied by a trained professional, sound healing methods may also be used as targeted, independent interventions. Whether caused by stress or other factors, sound healing methods provide numerous approaches to therapy and are an ideal complement to

By Christine Heckel

holistic, integrated back treatment. Sound massage may enable a sense of Wellbeing, induce relaxation, result in a parasympathetic response of the autonomous nervous system, regulate muscle tension, stimulate perfusion and lymph flow and therefore also metabolism, relax fascia, reduce pain, promote the body image…. And much more… The harmonic sound vibrations of our Therapy singing bowls generally promote a state of soothing relaxation in a short period of time. The vibrations of the singing bowls spread out over bodily fluids, tissues, organs, and muscles, as well as cavities throughout the body. In comparison to a traditional massage, here we are not working with “outside energy”, but with very fine impulses that trigger resonances within the body - so that it begins to vibrate from the inside out. The gentle oscillations function as soft, continuous vibrations in the area being treated. Muscle tension can be reduced, perfusion and lymph flow are stimulated, and fascia throughout the body are relaxed. You might be surprised how quickly this works! KEY ASTROLOGY Chiron In this article I’m concentrating on the minor planet Chiron which was ‘discovered’ in 1977. Cosmically, it sits between the slow moving planets of Saturn and Uranus, acting as a kind of buffer against these two heavyweight planets with opposing influences! Most of you will recognise the 10 major planets used in astrology charts i.e. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (all of which I’ve written about in previous articles), however, although Chiron is classed as a ‘minor’ planet and is relatively new to us, its importance in astrology can never be overlooked because wherever it is positioned in our natal chart is where we feel wounded… albeit the wounds are mostly unconscious until something or someone comes along to trigger them! In April 2018 Chiron ingressed (entered) into the ‘fire’ sign of Aries after spending the last 8/9 years in ‘watery’ Pisces, and it will remain in Aries until April 2027. Now when a slow moving Planet moves into a new sign after many years in the one previous, and of course into a different element (in this instance from water to fire) it will bring about changes which we’ll see/feel/experience, both in our personal lives and globally… remember we are all connected! It takes approximately 48-50 years for Chiron to move through each of the 12 signs of the zodiac and it was last in Aries from 3 April 1968 to 30th March 1977… almost every baby born during this period will have Chiron in Aries in their natal chart (except those born 20th October 1968 to 31st January 1969 when Chiron travelled back into Pisces for a few months) …but that’s still a lot of people! At some point over the next 9 years, those individuals will experience what is called the ‘Chiron Return’ which I’ve written about below. At the time of writing (May 2018) Chiron is in the very early degrees of Aries and this year it will only affect birthdays between 1968 and 1971. During a Chiron Return you could feel rather isolated and alone, but this is part of the Chiron influence to awaken you to your inner unconscious wounds that need to be cleansed and healed. It could almost feel like your world

16

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

has ended and you have failed by the age of 50! BUT… The Chiron return period offers an opportunity to revisit your wounds, also to understand that some things will never heal perfectly and the ones that will not, you CAN accept. Not only that, you can have a fulfilling and joyful life without being perfectly healed in that area of life. There is always SOME healing that will bring wisdom and if you have done all that you can that is enough, let it be and move forward. In a practical sense, your experience of this transit could be used to show or teach others how to use that healing. In a spiritual sense, draw on your resources to accept yourself as you are. Don’t see yourself as a wounded person; see yourself as whole and stop projecting your wounds onto others… it is only you wounding yourself. Whatever it was that wounded you in the first place (and this could go back to early childhood) is not the determinant of your life. You are the determinant of your life so be at peace with that fact because in that peace, you will find the healing. When we experience a crisis it is often followed by some kind of transformation. Our inner wounds can be difficult and heavy to carry around and there comes a point when we have no option but to let go of them, a symbolic death of sorts which allows for a re-birth to take place. Chiron travelling through Aries over the next 9 years will also open up a new healing energy on our Planet… it follows close on the heels of Uranus which moved into Taurus in May after a 7 year sojourn in Aries. Uranus is the rebel, it shouts freedom and wants change and while it was in Aries we certainly saw a lot of that world-wide. Chiron’s move into this sign could be the peace that follows the storm but it will require a lot of patience and soul searching. In Greek mythology Chiron is known as the wounded healer. The story goes that as a young man he suffered a wound that would not heal and being immortal the wound would be with him forever. However he swaps his immortality with Prometheus and becomes a mortal who upon

death is released from his wounds. Chiron represents wisdom and patience as well as mastery over the shadow-self and often our wounds can be seen as gifts when looked at from a different angle. They give us character, lessons in life and perseverance. Chiron can teach us these things but as always it’s up to us whether we choose to learn them!

KEY SPORTS World Cup Preview

By Steve Billingham

There are two main contenders for the golden boot: Griezmann or Werner then maybe Neymar and Kane said Physical Education student George Barrows. He went on, ‘Germany and Brazil for me have to be favourites to lift the World Cup. Spain have got good players (Morata) but they have not looked outstanding like those 2 countries have.’ France are attacking and skilful and must also be a threat. So what of England’s chances then? England have a chance if they perform well, Manager Gareth Southgate has to get the tactics right. The bookmakers make England the 7th favourites. The forward line looks strong and has goals in it. There is only really Kane, Vardy and Welbeck who have been scoring regularly for England so they also need someone who can come off the bench and get them a goal, win them a match or get them out of trouble (like when they were 1-2 down with Iceland in the 2016 Euros.) England’s defenders will have to mark a lot tighter than they did last time and not leave big gaps at the back like they did against Uruguay when Suarez exposed them. In the group match against Belgium which will be the toughest, the England defenders will have to have their wits about them. However they have defenders who are physical and could do man-marking jobs against Belgium and other teams later in the tournament. One For The Future Ryan Sessignon is one for the future, opines George Barrows. He scored 15 goals from left-back for Fulham this season. TOP 15 WORLD CUP FREE-KICKS David Luiz - Brazil v Columbia 2014 Quarter final match, Luiz curls into top right hand corner, keeper David Ospina gets his fingertips to it but doesn’t keep it out. Rivelino - Brazil v Czechoslovakia 1970 Drilled low and hard through the Czech wall after Jairzinho acts as a decoy, keeper Ivo Viktor very vocal and demonstrative. Garrincha - Brazil v Bulgaria 1966 Outside of the right peg, chipped over the wall into the corner. Cracker by the ‘Little Bird’ with one leg longer than the other in an otherwise disappointing Brazil tournament.

18

Bernard Genghini - France v Kuwait 1982 Left footed curler over the wall and into the corner past Al Tarabulsi’s despairing dive. ‘A stiff lesson in finishing’ as put by Sean Connery on the 1982 Official World Cup film. Zico - Brazil v Scotland 1982 Still magic to watch, Zico’s banana kick which bamboozled Alan Rough. Bernard Genghini - France v Austria 1982 Old Genghini again, they were flying in in ’82 weren’t they? Even further out than against Kuwait with the left peg, keeper Koncilia crashed into the post. A very sweetly executed free-kick and not the Fifa Fever Best of The Fifa World Cup number 1 for nothing. Pele - Brazil v Bulgaria 1966 Hit hard and low through the wall, Pele and Garrincha freekicks won the match 2-0 and Brazil never lost when they were both on the park. David Beckham - England v Columbia 1998 Curled over the wall and into the left hand corner past Mondragon who played a World Cup match for Columbia in 2014 aged 43. Teofillo Cubillas - Peru v Scotland Hit with the outside of the right boot from the left hand side from 20 yards past Alan Rough’s despairing dive - a glorious free-kick although it seemed to pass very close to Macari’s shoulder. Jose Luis Chierra - Chile v Cameroon 1998 Fine curling left peg free-kick into top right hand corner. Pele - Brazil v Rumania 1966 Hit low and hard with swerve straight through the wall into the net. Keisuke Honda - Japan v Denmark 2010 Drilled home left footed from 35 yards. Lionel Messi - Argentina v Nigeria 2014 A sublime free-kick which deceived keeper Enyeama who was too far to one side. Diego Forlan - Uruguay v Ghana 2010 Forlan in from 25 yards in his hurrah World Cup for Uruguay. John Robertson - Scotland v New Zealand 1982 There is a delay and a stutter, Frank Gray appears to take the kick then he is shoved back by Souness leaving John Robertson to curl over the wall into the top corner. Had to include this with it being in the Estadio La Rosaleda. Chart compiled by Steve Billingham and George Barrows

KEY PETS Keeping your Dog Healthy in Summer With summer here already in this issue I will give you my top tips on keeping your dog healthy in the heat. With over 27 years of working with dogs as a professional groomer and dietician, these tips are based on my experience of having worked with dogs as my life’s passion. I’m one of the lucky few who can say I love my job! Prevention is key so here are my tips on things you can do to help keep your dogs in great condition, helping to prevent common problems: Ears - Simply clean ears weekly (do not use cotton ear buds) using my best selling product Colloidal Liquid Silver (check out my Facebook page called Natures Secrets RUS pets). Spray inside of ears to help keep fungus, bacteria and mite infections at bay. Pads and Paws - Avoid walking your dogs between 12pm and 4pm due to the hot floors that could burn your dog’s delicate pads within seconds. Oil pads with any natural oil once a week (my 3in1 miracle oil is 100% natural and organic). Spray inside of pads daily with colloidal liquid silver to help keep pads healthy and help reduce itching and inflammation. Remember good pad care is one of the most important parts of a dog’s health. Sore pads can not only cause pain and distress and constant licking and chewing but long term could cause damage to pads resulting in pain in other joints. Add Colloidal liquid silver (just a few mls) to your dog’s water bowl. Liquid silver not only sterilises the water (NASA use it) but kills parasites like Guardia - a huge problem here in Spain that causes upset tummy which can

be on and off and cause long term damage to the colon Mouth, Gums and Teeth - Spray corners of mouth and teeth and gums twice weekly with liquid silver and use organic coconut oil to brush teeth weekly to help keep clean and free from bacteria. Skin and Coat - spray every few days with liquid silver to keep fungus, bacteria, fleas, ticks and mozzies at bay. Use after swimming. Keep coat free from undercoat and use coconut oil on areas with little fur to hydrate. If your dog starts limping or holding paws up, check inside the paws as bee stings are a common problem at this time of year. Unlike wasp stings, bees leave the stinger in, so it’s important this is removed to prevent more venom going into the body. Spray area with liquid silver and watch your dog for signs of inflammation or breathing problems. Seek veterinarian help if worried. Lastly and it seems silly to even write this, BUT I still read daily sad stories of dogs dying in cars - never leave your dog in your car, even with windows open. Temperatures can reach dangerous levels in minutes and remember walking your dog around an open market in the heat of June, July and August is not recommended. Enjoy your summer and if you would like my advice concerning dog health care, please go to my Facebook page - Compassionate Grooming by Joanna Fleur Oxley- and message me directly. For grooming appointments please be aware I am fully booked up to 10 days in advance during the summer.

KEY COMPUTERS Windows Applications you should install first on your new PC

By Computer City

Software is the backbone of any computer installation. Whether you’ve just purchased a new PC or reinstalled Windows, the first thing you would do is to install all sorts of useful programmes. While there are dozens of amazing windows programmes, knowing which tools are essential, makes setting up a new installation easy. 1. Security - Avast Free Antivirus - While you can take steps to protect your PC without an antivirus programme, it’s smart to keep one installed. There’s plenty of debate about which antivirus is the best? And no tool is perfect. However, some rise above the rest. For a free antivirus we recommend Avast Free Antivirus, it provides the two things you really want in a free AV programme: a good level of security and a light system impact.

ing beats VLC Media Player. It’s capable of playing nearly every format imaginable. It’s also capable of playing audio. 6. Backup - The default Windows backup solutions are not great. You don’t want to lose your precious data so it’s essential that you use a backup service. It is worth paying for a backup app, but if you want a free one, CrashPlan is great! It lets you back up your computer to an external drive, another computer on your network, or a friend’s computer over the internet for free. Setting up your new computer is easy and there are many great applications you can download online. If you find that you need help setting up your new PC, emails or a data transfer, Computer City can help!

2. Internet browser - Google Chrome - It’s still superspeedy, it includes little conveniences like searching Google for an image, and hosts a great library of extensions. Crossplatform syncing that lets you open your desktop tabs on your phone and vice-versa, a fantastic browser for all purposes. If you dislike Chrome there are plenty of other fantastic browsers to choose from like Firefox or Opera. 3. Cloud Storage – Dropbox - Storing information in “the cloud” has become an everyday occurrence. Dropbox is the cloud app you should install. The 2 GB of free storage isn’t much, though you can increase that by referring friends and other small tasks. Dropbox offers an app for every major device so you can take your files anywhere. 4. Music Streaming – Spotify - Years ago, if you wanted to listen to music on your desktop you had to painstakingly import and organize a collection of MP3s. Music streaming services eliminate the need for buying individual albums physically or digitally. There are several music streaming services in the market, but we recommend Spotify. Its adsupported free plan lets you listen to as much music as you like, and it also has a dedicated Windows app. 5. Media Player - You probably do most of your video viewing in a web browser, watching YouTube etc. However, you should still keep a solid player around on your desktop for when you need to play media files locally. For this task, noth-

KEY LAW Registering Holiday Rental Properties Registering Holiday Rental Properties is a hot topic these days. All kinds of rumours abound and a lot of ‘Fake news’ is attached to the subject. Here is some information to help clear up some confusion: The Law states that all advertisements for Holiday Rental Properties (properties where paying visitors stay for less than 2 months at a time) must carry the Junta De Andalucía licence number. It does not matter whether you rent seasonally or all year. If you are advertising, or renting, you must be registered. A rental licence number looks like this: VFT/MA/12345/ Please note a CTC number is NOT a licence, it is only the application for a licence which has not yet been granted or completed. If you have a CTC and it has not yet converted to a VFT, please follow up as you are not fully licensed. In Rural areas however, a CTC is sufficient. Here at LCPSpain we have already dealt with 19 clients this year who have received either fines or an instruction to cancel the advertisement until they have the correct licence. Once you have your VFT licence you can then apply for your property to be registered on the Police ‘HOSPIDERIAS’ website. This involves a visit to your local police station with copies of your Escritura, Nie, Passport and details of who checks your guests’ passports on their arrival, just like any hotel. All paying guests over the age of 16 and not related to the owner of the property must be registered with the Police within 24 hours of arrival. This is part of the Anti Terrorism law in Spain. Failure to do this can result in a fine AND any insurance being null and void on the property.

32

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Brian McDonnell, LCPSpain

Many unregistered properties are being discovered by holidaymakers having an issue, a traffic fine or a stolen or lost phone for example....they go to the police and report the address of where they are staying as part of their statement. When this address does not coincide with a licence, the owner of that property is in trouble. Many other unregistered owners are found when a disgruntled neighbour reports them to the police! The tax office (Hacienda) will also be informed that you have registered your property. They will be checking out to make sure you are doing your quarterly tax returns as is the law. The logic is, if you are renting, you are charging and should be declaring. If you are paying your taxes in another country, you can simply apply to your tax office for a declaration to prove that and you will not be subject to double taxation. You can, of course, claim expenses such as community charges, running costs and management fees on a pro rata basis. We have heard every excuse in the book for people not registering their property, but, there is a bottom line on this. If you rent your property and charge money to people, it must have a licence. It must also be registered with the police. Failure to do so will result in a fine and the lowest fine we have dealt with to date is 2500 Euros. So, far cheaper the costs involved in getting the licence than the cost of a fine. If you drive a car you need a driving licence. If you rent your apartment you need a holiday rental licence. Registering is quite a simple process and does not require anything you would not expect if you were staying in a rental property. Check out our NEWS page on LCPSpain.com or if you want more information on this subject email office@ LCPSpain.com or call +34 648 988 100 and we will do our best to answer your questions.

KEY LAW Are WhatsApp and GDPR on a Collision Course?

By Victoria Anzola, www.seqqe.com

When Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014, the companies said they wouldn’t put ads in WhatsApp because it would degrade the experience. But it also ditched its 1 dollar annual subscription fee, leaving few monetisation options beyond charging businesses for tools. The introduction of display ads and sponsored messages to Facebook Messenger may indicate a relaxation of WhatsApp’s stance against ads. With over 1.3 billion monthly users and 1 billion daily users, WhatsApp has reached the massive scale necessary for it to earn significant revenue even from light advertising. Its Snapchat Stories clone WhatsApp Status now has 250 million daily users, and could host vertical video ads between friends’ content the way Instagram does. It could also insert display ads into the inbox like Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp is a much-loved messaging app, with a billion users worldwide. While it’s great for group chats, free texts and voice calls and sharing photos and videos, WhatsApp is not suitable for a professional setting and could land you with a nasty fine from the Information Commissioner’s Office. Although WhatsApp may seem like a cheap and cheerful option when it comes to workplace instant messaging, there are a number of reasons why it is not acceptable for professional use. With GDPR which came into effect in May, WhatsApp’s storage of user data is in violation of EU data protection law, regardless of Brexit. Despite plans to launch new apps for businesses, WhatsApp simply isn’t fit for purpose and could mean that your organisation fails to comply with GDPR, leaving you liable for charges of up to 4% of your global turnover. GDPR & Data Protection The biggest concern is how WhatsApp uses our contact lists. When you install the app, you give it permission to access all of the contacts on your device. This could be on a company supplied mobile or the user’s own device. Either way, you are exposing the data of all of your personal and professional contacts without their permission. Security expert Matt Zweerink managed to exploit this to make a bot (with relative ease) that could access any WhatsApp user’s online/ offline status, and more. According to the new GDPR rules, companies are liable for the protection of clients’ and staff data, ruling out WhatsApp for use as a business communication platform for a number of reasons, including: 1. Under GDPR, businesses are required to be able to audit who has access to what data. On WhatsApp, data, files and messages can be shared limitlessly without leaving a paper trail detailing who can see your files. On top of this, WhatsApp records data and archives it on its own servers – making it impossible to be GDPR compliant if your company uses it. 2. Organisations must now keep a record of permissions from people whose data you store (which is violated by WhatsApp’s automatic use of your contact list). 3. Data needs to be disposed of securely if a client wants to exercise their “right to be forgotten,” but WhatsApp archives everything on their servers, taking it out of your control. Anyone could also export all of the contacts they have access to onto their desktop, easily lifting personal data of employees out of your protection.

36

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

4. You need to be able to ensure the protection of client data, even outside of the EU. WhatsApp are refusing to comply with France and Germany’s request for data samples as they feel that they are only beholden unto US laws on data protection, so they appear to have no qualms about not complying with GDPR. US privacy laws are weaker than the ones set out by the EU, which leaves your EU/UK based organisation non-GDPR compliant if you use WhatsApp. For doctors and healthcare professionals this is extremely problematic. A British Medical Journal study found that over a third of doctors send sensitive patient data via web-messaging apps like WhatsApp, despite warnings from the NHS that this is not a secure enough way to handle clinical information. This leaves data highly vulnerable to human error or deliberate malpractice. Although WhatsApp does boast end-to-end encryption, its security is far from watertight. Not only has it become a target of the seemingly inevitable cyber attacks, it is also owned by Facebook – a company that is notorious for its opaque use of user data. In fact, WhatsApp may be fined by French data protection authority CNIL for sharing data with Facebook. Data protection is obviously a serious issue, and WhatsApp should be unequivocally ruled out for business use if you want to avoid GDPR fines. But that is not the only issue that makes WhatsApp unfit for professional use. The Flood of Messages Important information can get lost in the stream of messages in a large group chat. Anyone who has tried to scroll back and find the time and location of a planned evening activity in a group chat after a mere half hour discussion about what everyone plans to wear will know how quickly important information can get buried. Mixing Business and Leisure WhatsApp is primarily a private messaging app for keeping in touch with friends and family. Having your friends’ chat right next to your boss’s/employees’ could be… risky. Even on a work phone with no personal contacts, using a platform that is also used to send GIFs from Spongebob Squarepants is a jarring conflict of tone. Using a private platform also blends work communication and home communication, something that many employees would rather avoid in the name of work/home separation. Keeping work data – especially sensitive data – on work servers where a Data Protection Officer can access it is a far more prudent approach. WhatsApp in a Crisis WhatsApp provides a communication channel outside of company supervision which, although great for planning to go to the pub after work, can prevent managers from being able to control the message during a crisis. Having a consistent social media message is vital for PR, but if one member of staff has already forwarded your message to their friend who happens to be a journalist, then it’s out of your hands. We love WhatsApp. I personally use it every day. But it simply isn’t designed for business, and organisations must have a purpose-build system in place to keep their data safe if they don’t want to fall foul of GDPR.
