THE BEST SPOTS FOR COFFEE

Looking for a few cozy spots for a nice cup of coffee downtown? We know of a few worth checking out keymagazinechicago.com

Time to lace up those skates

Rarely, in cold-weather cities, do you find a magnificent spot to ice skate downtown. In Chicago, we’re a bit spoiled. We have two. The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, located in the heart of Millennium Park, is the crown jewel of downtown when the weather turns chilly. The more recent addition, the Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park, is no slouch either. As opposed to the normal oval rink, this is a winding track that meanders through the grassy landscape to provide a different perspective. Skating is free, and rentals are just $12-14. When you’re done doing your best Olympic impersonation, make reservations at one of the more than 350 participating venues for Restaurant Week. It’s an annual event not to be missed (and running through Feb. 8), where affordable lunch ($22) and dinner ($33 or $44) prix-fixe menus are available to explore Chicago’s remarkable culinary scene. 4

coffee craze A COFFEE ENTHUSIAST’S TOP CHICAGO SPOTS FOR A CUP OF JOE BY MICHELLE FASANO

Call me crazy, but I got the idea to visit 52 neighborhood coffee shops in 52 weeks. To escape my apartment, I started hanging out in local shops and got hooked. While each spot holds a unique place in my heart, here are some of my favorites.

HERO COFFEE IN THE LOOP

Hero Coffee has five locations around Chicago, but the Printer’s Row location is about as adorable and Pinterest-able as they come. Strings of lights and a large “COFFEE” sign welcome coffee lovers into the cobblestone alley where this little shop is snuggly located. It is an incredibly tiny space with no seating, but just enough room inside to wait and order. 439 S. Dearborn, 22 E. Jackson. Hero-Coffee.com

SAWADA IN THE WEST LOOP

Attached to Green Street Smoked Meats, Sawada has all the rustic, exposed brick, and hanging-light feels of its popular neighbor. The atmosphere doesn’t get much cooler than Sawada, but overlooking the restaurant during the lunch hour can get a bit loud if you are looking to hold a serious conversation. Sawada is a perfect spot to grab coffee before brunch, play some pinball or people watch in the happening West Loop. 112 N. Green. SawadaCoffee.com

STAR LOUNGE IN WEST TOWN

Star Lounge is a warm and bright spot buzzing with energy and fun music. You can tell it was once a tavern; it is long and narrow with gold-colored walls, bar seating, small tables and a back patio. The staff is especially cheery and welcoming. They serve Dark Matter coffee (a Chicago favorite) and have a creative selection of craft lattes. I got the “Wake and Bake,” which is one of their most popular drinks. It has pepper and maple syrup, but trust me, it’s delicious and well-balanced. This spot is great for socializing. 2521 W. WORMHOLE IN WICKER PARK

Situated right in the heart of the hip Wicker Park neighborhood just northwest of downtown, this is where I picture the Big Bang Theory cast would hang out if they lived in Chicago. The moment you step inside, you are bombarded with 1980s and ’90s memorabilia and references (this includes an actual DeLorean car, working Nintendo games and an old Macintosh computer). The furnishings have an ’80s feel, with worn sofas and chairs that are inviting and funky. I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious my ginger curry latte tasted (one of the few things without an ’80s reference). Wormhole is good for meeting friends, working in a small group or alone, or playing some old school video games. It also is an ideal spot to take a break from browsing the trendy Wicker Park shops. 1462 N. Milwaukee. TheWormhole.US

BOURGEOIS PIG IN LINCOLN PARK

This is a Chicago coffeehouse staple. Located in an old house in the heart of the beautiful tree-lined Lincoln Park neighborhood, Bourgeois Pig has two separate, adjacent cafes and an outdoor courtyard. They are known for their sandwiches and, as such, one room has more of a deli feel. The other area feels much more like a coffeehouse, including a fireplace with a portrait hanging above, and chairs snuggly situated around it. I was impressed with their large loose tea selection. 738 W. Fullerton. TheBourgeoisPigCafe.com
