Chicago Strong When this latest crisis abates, the Windy City will be here to welcome you back From a legendary fire that leveled almost the entire city to a massive recession that turned the global economy on its head, Chicago has seen all kinds of disasters over the years. And as varied as these situations have been, one thing has remained constant through them all – the city has always united in its resolve to come back stronger than ever. So as serious as the current COVID-19 pandemic is, and as different as it is from the crises of the past, the fact remains that Chicago has a long, impressive track record of bouncing back. The spirit of pulling together and working hard to get our cultural offerings, dining scene and hospitality industry back to their world-
class stature is hardwired into the DNA of this proud Midwestern city. We’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again. Make no mistake – while Chicago may be largely shuttered right now (though you’ll find a number of great social-distancing-compliant options in these pages), this is but a temporary state of affairs. Come back and visit when this crisis has passed, and our hotels, museums, restaurants, shops, clubs and theaters will all be ready to roll out the welcome mat and show you just what this city is all about. Remember, we’re all in this together.

Wrigley Building
Marshall Field clock
The flagship department store that occupies this block of State Street may now be Macy’s, but longtime Chicagoans will always think of it as Marshall Field & Company. From the holiday windows to the historic dining room known as the Walnut Room, there are plenty of touchstones from the past here, but none are more significant – nor more widely seen on any given day – than the trademark clock at the corner of State and Randolph. 111 N. State
Picasso sculpture The city’s great art museums may be closed during the coronavirus shutdown, but there’s plenty of public art to observe and interact with throughout the city. One of the most famous pieces, of course, is this untitled work from 1967 by Pablo Picasso, which stands in Daley Plaza and has gone from much-debated (and derided) curiosity at the time of its dedication to much-beloved city landmark today. 50 W. Washington
This iconic 1920 skyscraper perched on the bank of the Chicago River is the gateway to the Magnificent Mile and one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. While the eponymous chewing gum company may no longer call this site home, its famous clock still serves as one of the city’s favorite civic timepieces. 400 N. Michigan
Greetings from Chicago mural
A nice postcard can be a great reminder of a trip, but it’s so hard to find one in a gift shop that actually includes a shot of yourself in the scene. This isn’t a problem in the city’s Logan Square neighborhood, however, where this delightful wall perfectly captures the look and feel of a nostalgic wish-you-were-here greeting – one you can actually be a part of! 2226 N. Chicago Theatre marquee
Until the doors to this world-famous art museum reopen to visitors, there’s nothing wrong with taking a tour of the outside of the historic building (originally built for the Columbian Expedition of 1893), which of course has to include a stop at the iconic lion statues that guard the main entrance. They may not be wearing the classic Christmas wreaths that adorn their necks during the holiday season, but they’re a sight to behold any time of the year. 111 S. Michigan
Hebru Brantley murals Here’s a great way to spend a social distancing day in Chicago – roam the city in search of Flyboy, the signature artistic creation of artist Hebru Brantley. Not only will you discover Chicago street art at its finest, you’ll also wind up with a mini tour of some of the city’s most distinctive neighborhoods – from Rogers Park to West Town to Logan Square. 1400 W. Randolph, 2019 N. Mendell, 1640 N. Damen, 1800 W. Pratt, 4717 N. Clifton, 4640 N. Lincoln

Historic Water Tower North Michigan Avenue may be largely abandoned right now, but it was actually a different crisis that emptied this section of the city almost 150 years ago. The Great Chicago Fire destroyed more than three square miles of the city, but this historic structure was among the handful of buildings to survive – and the only one still standing in 2020. 806 N. Michigan
Wrigley Field
Major League Baseball may be on hold until at least mid-May, but you can still visit one of the game’s defining historic parks. From the Harry Carey statue to the famous marquee, the Friendly Confines is more than just the home of the Chicago Cubs – it’s a civic landmark and a connection back to baseball’s earliest days. 1060 W. Addison
Site of Fort Dearborn
As you stand near the corner of Michigan and Wacker these days, it may be eerie to observe the absence of pedestrian and vehicular traffic on what is generally one of Chicago’s busiest intersections. But you’ll actually be experiencing something closer to the serenity of the days when Fort Dearborn stood here as the first permanent structure in the city. Michigan and Wacker
Flamingo wall
Art Institute lions
Chicago has iconic landmarks all over town – the kind of wellknown places and buildings that have come to instantly identify the city to anyone who sees them. And on State Street (“that Great Street”), few sights are more photographed or admired than the soaring marquee of this historic showplace, where even when the stage is alive and the 3,600 seats are packed, it’s the sign outside that still seems to own the spotlight. 175 N. State
The Bowman and The Spearman statues
These two 17-foot-tall bronze equestrian statues act as gatekeepers to the city’s downtown from the east and the lakefront from the west. Best of all, these proud Native American warriors apparently had the foresight to socially distance themselves from each other long before that became a thing. Ida B. Wells and Michigan
The Cuban-themed Flamingo Rum Club may be temporarily closed, but one of its most Instagrammed features is still available for selfies and a general reminder that whimsy still exists in this world. The giant mural of proud flamingos on the restaurant’s outer wall may make you think you’ve taken a wrong turn and somehow wound up in sunny Miami. 601 N. Wells Get the app keychicago

ELEVEN CITY DINER
Head to this South Loop gem for some of the best IndianNepalese cuisine in Chicago in an elegant, relaxed setting. Recommended: the lamb mimosas with tamarind and mint cilantro chutney or the flavorful chicken tikka over a bed of rice. Or swing by for their great lunch buffet from Described as “a hybrid of sincere respect for what family dining rooms used to be,” this old-school diner and delicatessen knows a thing or two about what putting a plateful of scrumptious, rib-sticking food in front of you can do for the soul. Classic deli sandwiches stacked tall, decadent burgers and melts, and loaded breakfast favorites highlight the menu. One of our favorites is Rubin’s reuben, an open-faced corned beef or pastrami sandwich with Swiss, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing with fries. And don’t’ forget the thick chocolate malt, served in the tin. 1112 S. Wabash St. 312-212-1112. ElevenCityDiner.com Get the app keychicago
