The one and only Wicked is back

Winner of more than 100 international awards, including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, Wicked has been performed in better than 100 cities in 14 countries around the world. Now the phenomenon returns to Chicago, one of its first and longest-running homes. Based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, Wicked explains what happened long before Dorothy arrives, when a rivalry between a popular, bubbly blonde and a smart, misunderstood girl born with green skin turns into the most improbable of friendships — before the two become symbols of good and bad. Hailed as “the defining musical of the decade” by the New York Times, Wicked calls the Oriental Theatre home from Dec. 6, 2017-Jan. 21, 2018. Call 800-775-2000 or visit BroadwayInChicago.com for information. 4

CHICAGO IS A PLAYGROUND FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES. WHATEVER YOUR ADVENTURE, BUDGET OR LOCATION, A FUN HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE IS BOUND TO BE JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

Robot Revolution is back at the Museum of Science and Industry with an even bigger look into the future of robots. The exhibit explores how robots are changing the way humans play, live and work together, while also giving visitors the opportunity to interact with robotic technology that has yet to be presented to the rest of the world. This is an exhibit that all ages will enjoy because it provides a deeper look into the world of robots compared to the surface version we see in media. It also provides the realization that the future of technology is now — and it’s exciting. 5700 S. Lake Shore. 773.684.1414. MSIChicago.org Ever wonder what it’s like inside a snow globe? How about what it’s like to party inside a snow globe? 10

The Loop Chicago’s home base

The Loop, better known as the central business district in downtown Chicago, was named for the prominent elevated railway (built in 1897) that still encircles the area to this day. It is the city’s epicenter and home to much of the very best Chicago has to offer. Here are a few Loop favorites worth checking out.

Macy’s

Along with Water Tower Place, Macy’s is considered the crown jewel of the Chicago shopping experience. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, this is a true American original housing the best in fashion, cuisine and unique experiences (like the famous

Women’s and men’s apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, makeup, furniture and household goods — you’ll find it all inside this 12-floor building that has served generations of Chicagoans and visitors alike. The Dearborn

Considering its proximity to Chicago’s hopping theatre district, The Dearborn is an ideal spot for a pre-show dinner or a drink after the curtain closes. It’s also a great place to grab a bite if all the shopping at Block 37 has your stomach rumbling. Executive chef Aaron Cuschieri, a former “Top Chef” contestant from the 2013 season, will take your palate on an exciting journey with his upscale pub fare. 145 N. Dearborn. TheDearbornTavern.com

Theatre District

Rivaling anything in the U.S. outside of New York, Chicago’s Theatre District (see our Holidays On Stage section on pages 20-27) is an impressive collection of dance (Joffrey Ballet), opera (Lyric Opera at the Civic Opera House) and stage (Goodman Theatre, Broadway in

Chicago productions at the Cadillac Palace Theatre and Oriental Theatre), all on or near a stretch of Randolph before leaking south on Wacker Dr. (Lyric). Expect big productions and big names to grace the marquees. In Chicago, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Block 37

Opened in 2009, Block 37 is a sprawling urban shopping, dining and entertainment destination that spans an entire city block. The three-building structure is centered around a five-story atrium and home to a vast supply of fashion and beauty brands, as well as boutiques, eateries, cafés and a movie theater. 108 N. State. Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol at Chicago Shakespeare Theater

Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol Real Chicago, this 90-minute sketch show (with some improvisation) takes dead aim at the crazy, consistently insufferable parts of the holidays, especially when it comes to bringing the family together. “We’re creating a show where everything starts to feel familiar about the holidays and just doubling down on that idea,” says director Tyler Samples, “playing inside of that Hallmark nostalgia and warm and fuzzy Christmas special.” Holidazed and Confused runs Nov. 15-Dec. 30 at Second City’s UP Comedy Club (230 W. North Ave.). Call 312-662-4562 or visit UpComedyClub. com for schedule and ticket information.

The hip-hop holiday spectacular returns, as the Chicago Shakespeare Theater teams up with the Q Brothers, creators or Othello: The Remix and Funk it Up About Nothin’, to turn up the volume on the classic Charles Dickens’ tale. Expect a healthy mix of reggae, rock ballads, dubstep and dancehall in this uniquely engaging performance. DJ Super Nova spins for the talented Q Brothers as the ghosts of hip-hop past, present and future help guide old man Scrooge on his journey of rhythm, rhyme and redemption. Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol runs Nov. 21-Jan. 31 at The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare on Navy Pier. Call 312-595-5600 or visit ChicagoShakes.com for schedule and ticket information.

Theater Wit with his hilariously touching tell-all, This Way Outta Santaland (and other Xmas miracles). As the star of David Sedaris’ popular The Santaland Diaries for eight years, Fain returns for a second go-round as the creator and performer of his own holiday show that blends creative storytelling, improvisation, cabaret and cocktails. Altered from one night to the next and equal parts humor and heart, This Way Outta Santaland is a sentimental evening of hard truths — and a few surprises. Performances run Nov. 24-Dec. 30 at Theater Wit (1229 N. Belmont). Visit TheaterWit.org for schedule and ticket information.

Barney the Elf at Greenhouse Theater Center

Barney The Elf lands him in — where else — a drag bar in Chicago, where he must decide if he can truly turn his back on Christmas in favor of life in the big city. IT’S NO SECRET THAT CHICAGO HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF QUALITY PLACES TO DINE. HERE ARE A FEW THAT STAND OUT WITH HOW THEY CELEBRATE THE CHRISTMAS SEASON

LAWRY’S

Not only does Lawry’s sparkle with holiday décor during the best time of the year, but they even have Victorian-era costumed carolers strolling about the dining room to serenade guests during dinner hours. Try the Diamond Jim Brady cut of prime rib while you’re there. It’s an extra-thick portion that includes the rib bone for added flavor. You won’t regret it. 100 E. Ontario. 312.787.5000.

THE BERGHOFF

The Berghoff, a name synonymous with quality German food in Chicago since 1898, has 34

been offering a unique holiday tradition for generations called Pickle in the Pine. Children are invited to comb through the illuminated branches of the beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the restaurant’s Century Room in search of a hidden pickle ornament. A free handcrafted root beer belongs to any child who finds it. 17 W. Adams. 312.427.3170.

CLUB LUCKY

To say this classy throwback Italian supper club and cocktail lounge goes all out for the holidays would be an understatement. A

major one. Traditionally decked out in wreaths, lights, hanging snowflakes and other festive decorations, this is must-stop every December in the Bucktown neighborhood. They like to say their food is as comfortable as their atmosphere, and given the family-style Italian specialties on the menu, that’s a pretty accurate description. 1824 W. Wabansia. 773.227.2300.

WALNUT ROOM

Whether you’re looking to take a break from shopping or seeking a warm, inviting spot for dinner or a glass of wine, no visit to Chicago during the holidays would be complete without stopping by the iconic Walnut Room. A longtime staple inside Macy’s, the 17,000-square-foot dining room boasts a 45-foot Christmas tree, decorated with 2,000 ornaments and 6,600 lights, and a visit with Santa. 111 N. State. 312.781.3139

BUTCH McGUIRE’S

For more than five decades, this popular family-run Irish pub has been known to take its decorative spirit to another level during the Christmas season. Double-decker toy trains circle the establishment, which is adorned with a stunning array of lights and garland. McGuire’s has a menu full of tempting items, but you just can’t go wrong with the good ol’ fish and chips. 20 W. Division. 312.787.4318.

R.J. GRUNTS

Ideally situated across the street from Lincoln Park Zoo if you’re looking to warm up before or after hitting ZooLights, R.J. Grunts has built a reputation around their stellar burgers, loaded salad bar, hand-dipped shakes and warm, family-friendly vibe. The pretty holiday decorations only add to the cozy scene, especially if it happens to be snowing outside and you’re settled into a booth by the large windows. 2056 N. FURIOUS SPOON

Lunch buffet OK, so it’s not technically a “dish,” but their generous spread of specialty items from the old country is worthy of inclusion on this page. The buffet starts with soups, salads and fried samosas before delving into a string of vegetable and potato stews (try the fried cauliflower), rice dishes, chicken tikka masala and delectable, complex curry concoctions (on this day: lamb and some excellent tilapia). A few dessert options remain for those who are able to leave room.

Shoyo ramen The restaurant features six different types of ramen bowls (two cold, four hot), differing mainly in flavoring and garnish, with noodles made daily from scratch. The shoyo features a heaping bowl of soy, chashu pork belly, bean sprouts, bamboo and nori, topped if you like with egg, mushrooms and fury sauce. The ramen was so flavorful, and your bowl comes loaded with every key ingredient in abundance. No skimping on anything here.

Tandoori chicken A normal menu item at seemingly every Indian restaurant, it’s also served as a complimentary appetizer with your lunch buffet at India House, arriving at your table atop a sizzling plate of onions and vegetables. The tender pieces of chicken are roasted in a clay oven and spiced just right. A meal in itself, should you choose.

Takoyaki This side dish is one we had to be talked into by the manager, and it turns out listening to her was the best decision we made all evening. Takoyaki is a fried, ball-shaped Japanese street snack made with diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onion. Think hot octopus dumplings that are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

holiday cocktail hour

At KEY Magazine’s annual Concierge Holiday Showcase in late November at the Civic Opera House, members of the Chicago concierge and hospitality community voted in a holiday cocktail competition. Below are the two winners, as well as another tasty drink you should know about.

Winner of KEY’s concierge cocktail competition:

The Naughty List

THE DEARBORN

145 N. Dearborn. TheDearbornTavern.com The drink: The Naughty List (cold drink winner) The Dearborn is an urban American tavern, offering an eclectic twist on seasonal classics as well as essential Chicago dishes from executive chef Aaron Cuschieri, a former “Top Chef” contestant. Its proximity to theatre row and the popular Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza adds to the allure. Also worth noting: A dynamic new pastry chef. The Naughty List combines Knob Creek Rye, Salers aperitif, rosemary cordial, fresh blood orange juice, Aperol aperitif and a dash of Angostura bitters — all shaken and served up, garnished with a rosemary sprig. “We wanted to compose a cocktail that was immediately reminiscent of the holidays,” says bar manager Sarah Clark. “One smell and it brings back a nostalgic feel.” The blood-orange juice provides a warm, citrusy flavor, while the rosemary gives off a subtle pine scent. “It’s like you’re at a warm holiday party with a fire going, a little bit of pine on the nose, and Christmas treats in the oven,” Clark adds. “It combines sweet with a dry finish, and a little bit of spice behind it. We found the perfect balance of what we wanted.”

LOST LAKE

3154 W. Diversey. LostLakeTiki.com The drink: Little Saint Nog At this trendy, tropical tiki bar in the up-and-coming Logan Square neighborhood, acclaimed beverage director Paul McGee has a knack for creating the ultimate escape from winter. The Little Saint Nog will put a smile on Santa’s face, and maybe delay his deliveries a bit. Enjoy a combination of Plantation O.F.T.D. rum, Maison Ferrand 1840 cognac, aged Guatemalan rum, spiced demerara, coffee, cream and eggs.

SAFEHOUSE

60 E. Ontario. SafehouseChicago.com The drink: Hot SPYced rum (hot drink winner) This is a fun bar with a strong dedication to its spy theme that really pays off. Everything Winner of KEY’s concierge cocktail from the staff to the competition: decor and even the Hot SPYced Rum entrance (a small office with a secret doorway leading downstairs) adds to a simultaneously laid-back and ready-for-adventure vibe. The idea for Safehouse’s hot SPYced rum drink — the winner of the hot drink category — comes from an old Irish family recipe, courtesy of the restaurant’s director of operations. It consists of nutmeg, cinnamon sticks and ground cinnamon, white rum and apple cider. “We’re serving it in a wine glass with a cinnamon-sugar rim and an orange slice,” says assistant GM Heather Converse, “so it’s not only delicious, but it looks quite pretty as well.” No argument there. keymagazinechicago.com
