The Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co. ushers in the holiday season with its annual Holiday Lights Tour beginning Nov. 24 and running through Dec. 23. The tour explores many of Chicago’s iconic seasonal landmarks, such as the Christkindmarket, Lincoln Park Zoo Lights and the Macy’s holiday windows. The tour begins at the John Hancock Plaza tree (875 N. Michigan Ave.) and then ventures to Sprinkles Cupcakes for a complimentary cupcake before heading down the Magnificent Mile to begin the tour and take in the thousands of glittering lights. Lunch buffet OK, so it’s not technically a “dish,” but their generous spread of specialty items from the old country is worthy of inclusion on this page. The buffet starts with soups, salads and fried samosas before delving into a string of vegetable and potato stews (try the fried cauliflower), rice dishes, chicken tikka masala and delectable, complex curry concoctions (on this day: lamb and some excellent tilapia). A few dessert options remain for those who are able to leave room.

Shoyo ramen The restaurant features six different types of ramen bowls (two cold, four hot), differing mainly in flavoring and garnish, with noodles made daily from scratch. The shoyo features a heaping bowl of soy, chashu pork belly, bean sprouts, bamboo and nori, topped if you like with egg, mushrooms and fury sauce. The ramen was so flavorful, and your bowl comes loaded with every key ingredient in abundance. No skimping on anything here.

Tandoori chicken A normal menu item at seemingly every Indian restaurant, it’s also served as a complimentary appetizer with your lunch buffet at India House, arriving at your table atop a sizzling plate of onions and vegetables. The tender pieces of chicken are roasted in a clay oven and spiced just right. A meal in itself, should you choose.

Takoyaki This side dish is one we had to be talked into by the manager, and it turns out listening to her was the best decision we made all evening. Takoyaki is a fried, ball-shaped Japanese street snack made with diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onion. Think hot octopus dumplings that are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.
