On Stage LIVE PERFORMANCES....................50

This Week In Chicago

2 FRIDAY

ON THE COVER HAPPY BLUES YEAR! Music fans generally don’t look forward to the sparse post-holiday January concert schedule. But for Chicago blues lovers, the first month of the year is often the best, because that’s when the legendary Buddy Guy sets up shop for a month of performances at his club Buddy Guy’s Legends at 700 S. Wabash. While the still-vibrant Guy keeps up a busy touring schedule throughout the year and is no stranger to Chicago-area stages, this annual residency in the South Loop is one of the best chances for fans to hear and see him in the rare intimate surroundings of a genuine blues club – one that just happens to have his name on the door. This week’s performances are Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 9:30pm and Thursday at 8pm and feature several supporting artists each night. Advance tickets ($55-$65) are highly recommended and are available at 312.427.1190 or buddyguy.com.

Christmas in the City

Photos clockwise from top left: Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co., Winter Wonderfest and 360 Chicago.

While summertime brings sightseers to Chicago in droves, the city takes on a whole different look and feel in December, and it’s hard to beat. Hop aboard a decorated ride from CHICAGO TROLLEY & DOUBLE-DECKER CO. to get a “greatest hits” look at Christmas in the city on the Holiday Lights tour (Michigan and Delaware; tickets online at coachusa.com/chicagotrolley). For those who enjoy a little “do” with their “see,” the annual WINTER WONDERFEST extravaganza is rides, ice skating, Santa and more all under one big roof at Navy Pier (600 E. Grand; 312.595.5282). Of course, Christmas or not, the city always has a magnificent glow at night, and you can see it all from the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center (and even visit with a sky-high Santa) at 360 CHICAGO (875 N. Michigan; 888.875.8439).

Holidays in the Park

Photos clockwise from top left: Caroling at Cloud Gate, McCormick Tribune Ice Rink and Rudy’s Bar & Grille.

Christmas is in full swing in every corner of Chicago this month, but to truly be in the middle of it all, there’s no better choice than MILLENNIUM PARK, where there are plenty of great ways to celebrate the season. Every Friday evening (through December 19), the popular sculpture affectionately known as “The Bean” becomes the centerpiece of a civic sing-along as local choral groups lead the way for CAROLING AT CLOUD GATE. Meanwhile, skaters of varying skill levels twirl, glide, stumble and sway amid the twinkling holiday lights and brilliant skyline backdrop of the MCCORMICK TRIBUNE ICE RINK. And after a night of singing and skating, chilly revelers are just steps away from a delicious warm-up of hot cocoa and hamburgers at nearby RUDY’S BAR & GRILLE (69 E. Madison; 312.332.8111).

Mall I Want For Christmas With so many great boutiques and freestanding stores, heading to a mall for Christmas shopping in Chicago may seem like a waste of the great urban retail landscape. But the word “mall” doesn’t do justice to the iconic and diverse Water Tower Place (835 N. Michigan, 312.440.3166), a true legend on the Magnificent Mile. There’s something for everyone here – the best in skin care and beauty at the new H2O+ kiosk on level 3 (312.943.5929), fun toys and clothes to keep the little ones occupied at Spoil Me Kidz Boutique on levels 2 and 7 (312.448.8128), and a place for dad to grab a beer and wait out the shopping frenzy at Harry Caray’s 7th Inning Stretch and the adjacent Chicago Sports Museum on level 7 (312.202.0500).

True Chicago Chicago-style deep-dish pizza is one of the year-round musthaves for visitors to the Windy City – a unique culinary treat so inseparable from its ties to the city that it warrants its own place in the history books. But there’s no better time to seek out one of these piping-hot pies than during the cold winter months, when the density of all of that dough, sauce and cheese is exactly what’s needed to fend off the elements. And there are few places that serve up Chicagostyle pizza better than Gino’s East, one of the legendary originators of the form. Stop by and fill up at either the South Loop (521 S. Dearborn; 312.939.1818) or River North (162 E. Superior; 312.266.3337) location, and pick up a FREE gift with the ad on page 32 of our 2014 Holiday Activity Guide!

History is Served A select number of old-school taverns in Chicago can accurately be described as legendary, but even among the legendary, few can match the historic heft and sense of place of the Green Door Tavern (678 N. Orleans; 312.664.5496). A former speakeasy and the oldest of its brethren in the city, this 1920s-era stalwart has been serving honest, no-nonsense food and drink to generations of Chicagoans and visitors throughout the decades in the same comfortable, old-school atmosphere. Dining Diversity...

Chicago has so many great dining options that it’s often difficult for visitors in town for just a short time to narrow down their choices and still get a good representation of all the city has to offer. One good strategy may be to map out one’s dining itinerary based on the city’s rich and Mexican Cuisine since 1963

diverse ethnic makeup – in other words, to literally get a taste of Chicago cultural history through its food. Consider these great options. The city’s proud Mexican heritage is well-represented in River North by Su Casa (49 E. Ontario; 312.943.4041), a longtime stalwart for authentic comfort food since the Kennedy administration.

While the heart of Chicago’s vibrant Indian community is concentrated along a famous stretch of Devon Avenue on the far north side, a great downtown option – also in River North – is the tantalizing buffet at India House (59 W. Grand; 312.645.9500). Up north in the city’s hip Wicker Park enclave,

the throwback Club Lucky (1824 W. Wabansia; 773.227.2300) is a great place for both a delicious Italian meal and a trip back in time. Finally, corned beef, potato pancakes and a wonderful cross-section of Chicagoans have defined the classic family-run Manny’s Cafeteria and Delicatessen (1141 S. Jefferson; 312.939.2855) since the 1940s.
