JANUARY BLUES The early-year live entertainment calendar is thin. You’d think that given these circumstances, Chicago music fans would be resigned to hibernating for a few weeks before venturing out again. But then they’d be missing one of the musical highlights of the year. That’s because every January, during one of the quietest periods for live music in town, bluesman Buddy Guy takes a break from his busy touring schedule to give his hometown a treat, settling in for four weeks at his South Loop club Legends (700 S. Wabash, 312.427.1190). The setting seems to energize the legendary guitarist as much as it does his legions of local fans, with raucous performances in a compact room that go a long way toward heating up wintertime in Chicago. Guy continues his annual January residency at Legends this week, taking the stage Thursday through Sunday nights. Several shows have already sold out, so be sure to call ahead. 4

The Ledge

The must-see Art Institute of Chicago (111 S. Michigan, 312.443.3600), recently received the largest donation in its 136year history, nearly $400-millionworth of contemporary art that includes nine Warhols, soon to hang proudly in the institute’s wings. Trip Advisor ranks it the No. 1 museum in the world, a history of excellence that’s sure to be memorable.

Take a detour off the beaten path to view The Rookery Building (209 S. LaSalle, 312.553.6100), a Chicago landmark located in the heart of the Financial District. Architects Daniel Burnham and John Root took care to design what was once considered the oldest standing high-rise in the city. The Rookery was remodeled in 1905 by prominent architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

We dare you to step out on the Ledge at Skydeck Chicago (233 S. Wacker, 312.875.9696) and see what it’s like to look straight down 1353 feet! More timid travelers will be equally awe-struck with the scenic 360-degree views and interactive displays. Be sure to purchase the Day/Night ticket so you can get both perspectives of the Windy City.

EVERY CUISINE, EVERY BUDGET, EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD CHICAGO’S RESTAURANT SCENE HAS YOU COVERED. FROM FINE DINING TO CLASSIC COMFORT FOOD, YOUR VISIT TO CHICAGO’S RIVERWALK IS SURE TO BE IN GOOD TASTE. A Chicago dining institution for over 25 years, Harry Caray’s, 33 W. Kinzie, 312.828.0966 serves Italian favorites alongside USDA prime wet and dry aged steaks.

Pizano’s

A favorite of Chicago’s politicos since 1942, Manny’s Deli’s (1141 S. Jefferson, 312.939.2855) is a family-owned, cafeteria-style institution that continues to serve sandwiches piled high with juicy corned beef and hot pastrami. The family tradition dates back more than 50 years ago, with good down home recipes straight from your mother’s kitchen. Well, actually, Manny’s mother’s.

No trip to Chicago is complete without sampling at least one of our famous pizzerias and we’d be remiss if we didn’t recommend one of Chicago’s favorites... Pizano’s Pizza & Pasta (864 N. State, 312.751.1766 and 61 E. Madison, 312.236.1777). Pizano’s serves up the traditional deep dish that Chicago is known for, but it’s specialty isis it’s thin crust. Voted #1 by the Oprah show!

The brainchild of restauranteur Taki Kastanis, Yolk (355 E. Ohio, 312.822.9655) is becoming a Chicago brand all its own, ever since taking the South Loop by storm in 2006 and racking up awards for “Best Breakfast” (Citysearch.com) and “#1 breakfast” (Fox News viewers) The popular brunch spot is expanding, but the lines aren’t getting any shorter. 34

SEAFOOD

Catch 35

Serving the freshest seafood in the city continues to be the specialty of Catch 35 (35 W. Wacker, 312.346.3500). Offering a rotating selection of fresh catches such as Ecuadorian Mahi Mahi, Block Island swordfish, whole lobster and king crab legs as well as prime steaks. Bridging the Loop and River North, Catch 35 is the prefect spot for pre-theater dining.

Still recovering from all the holiday celebrations? Bloodies aren’t just for breakfast. One of the best can be found at Eleven City Diner (1112 S. Wabash, 312.212.1112; 2301 N. Clark, 773.244.1112). This colossal cocktail is a virtual meal-in-aglass, overflowing with meats and veggies. They even bottle the stuff so all you have add is the vodka and your favorite accoutrements. Maybe you’d prefer to recover where All-American cuisine meets all-American music at the legendary Hard Rock Café (63 W. Ontario, 312.943.2252). Take in the museum-quality memorabilia dotting the walls as you dig into a menu of straightahead classics, including one of the best burgers in the city. On select nights, you may even be able to head outside after dinner for some great live music to cap off an evening that truly rocks.

Second City

Almost every big name in comedy today has spent some time on its world-famous stage, and almost every visitor who’s wanted a taste of what makes Chicago’s comedy scene so distinctive has passed through its legendary doors. For real Chicago improv, just remember those three little words: The Second City (1616 N. Wells; 312.337.3992).

Chicago’s craft beer scene is on fire, and much of the heat these days is coming from the River North neighborhood, where relative newcomer Gino’s Brewing Company (500 N. LaSalle, 312.988.4200) is suddenly turning out some of the city’s finest. Drink a champion tonight with a tall glass of gold medalwinning LaSalle Street Lager (a traditional German Helles brewed with Pilsner, Munich and CaraPils malts), or silver selection Broken English (a full-bodied, sessionable English pub ale), or bronze favorite Gino’s Pale Ale (a Belgian pale ale with a touch of biscuity sweetness). After sampling these and other great beers, stick around for a world-famous Gino’s Chicago-style pizza and maybe a few laughs at The Comedy Bar – all under the same roof! keymagazinechicago.com
