Extended by popular demand, the smash-hit musical, Million Dollar Quartet, continues its run in Chicago, blazing past its one-year mark. As the original quartet heads to Broadway, producers confidently introduce a new Chicago cast to play simultaneous shows both here and in New York. Inspired by the famed, 1956 recording session that brought together legendary rock ‘n’ roll icons Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, Million Dollar Quartet captures a singular moment when four of the music industry’s most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history. The show features a treasure trove of the greatest rock ’n’ roll, gospel, R&B and country hits from these music legends, including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Whole Lotta’ Shakin’ Goin’ On,” and recently added “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Hound Dog.” When the show reached its one-year milestone back in October, co-producers Gigi Pritzker and John Cossette said, “From the very first preview performance, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, exceeding our expectations and confirming our hopes.” With tickets now on sale through September 5, 2010, this rock ‘n’ roll hit musical shows no signs of slowing down.

From beautiful landscapes to monumental architecture to iconic sculpture, Millennium Park is truly a 21st century creation. The concert season may have come to a close, but Chicago’s favorite outdoor ice rink, the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, is open through March 14 (weather permitting). So sharpen the blades on those ice skates and come out for a twirl.

Free Park Happenings… Self-Guided Audio Tour: Travel at your own pace and listen as the masterminds behind the world’s most spectacular public space – architect Frank Gehry and artists Anish Kapoor and Jaume Plensa – recount how and why Millennium Park was built and the secrets that lie beneath the park floor. McCormick Tribune Ice Rink: Head on over to the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink for a day of figure eights downtown at Chicago’s favorite outdoor ice rink. Rental skates are available for $10, and the ice time is free. Open daily: Mon-Thu noon-8pm, Fri noon-10pm, Sat 10am-10pm and Sun 10am-9pm.

Park Attractions… BP Bridge: Take the long way across Columbus Drive to Daley Bicentennial Plaza via Frank Gehry’s whimsically serpentine steel creation. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below. Crown Fountain: These towering waterfall bookends bearing digital images of actual Chicagoans have proven to be a popular barefoot playground for splashing children. Jay Pritzker Pavilion: Architect Frank Gehry’s bold outdoor band shell, with its soaring steel ribbons and state-of-the-art canopied sound system over the lawn, is a breathtaking design that also happens to be a marquee performance venue. Lurie Gardens: A 2.5-acre paradise for green-loving urbanites, this collection of flora brings to life Chicago’s motto “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden).

spring has sprung! There’s nothing quite like the first few indicators of spring to warm the soul, and nothing kick-starts a good spring revival like a solid Spring Break... The city’s museums are always popular options, but several special exhibits make them an even better bet right now. Out at the Museum Campus, great permanent draws like Evolving Planet, Inside Ancient Egypt, and Sue the T-Rex are joined by the new temporary exhibit Mammoths & Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age at the Field Museum of Natural History (1400 S. Lake Shore; 312/665-7683). Visitors to the Adler Planetarium (1300 S. Lake Shore; 312/922-7827), meanwhile, can take in not only the great year-round sky shows, but beginning this week can be wowed by the big new Planet Explorers adventure as well. Further down the lakefront, the Museum of Science and Industry (5700 S. Lake Shore; 773/6841414) adds another spectacular option to its list of favorites like the U-505 submarine and Henry Crown Space Center with the opening of its newest exhibit Science Storms. Before or after the museum, there are couple of attractive options for keeping the family fueled up – and entertained. There are distractions aplenty at Rainforest Café (605 N. Clark; 312/787-1501), where the food is served amid roaring jungle waterfalls and floor-to-ceiling aquariums. Find discount coupon on page 9. At Ed Debevic’s (640 N. Wells; 312/664-1707), meanwhile, the sassy waitstaff and retro diner aesthetics are sure to keep the kids interested until the burgers and fries arrive. Looking for a big finish to your big day of spring break fun? Look no further – or higher – than the John Hancock Observatory (875 N. Michigan; 888-875-VIEW) for drop-dead vistas of Chicago (and surrounding states!) and the multimedia Sky Tour – a quick spin through the city from above narrated by actor David Schwimmer. See our Kids Korner section on page 8 for more ideas!
