Historic Navy Pier® Learn about the birth and rebirth of one of Chicago’s most important historical landmarks.

1909

Daniel Burnham creates the “Master Plan of Chicago” which originally envisioned five piers. Eventually, one 1.5-mile long recreational pier is commissioned to be built near the mouth of the Chicago River.

1914

Construction begins under the direction of the nationally known architect Charles Sumner Frost. Construction of the Pier costs $4.5 million.

1916

“Municipal Pier” opens to the public. It is the only pier to combine the business of shipping with the pleasure of public entertainment.

Municipal Pier is officially renamed Navy Pier as a tribute to Navy personnel who served during World War I.

1933

Century of Progress Exposition (World’s Fair) on the lakefront draws 1,500 conventions and 1.5 million visitors.

1942

The Navy operates various training programs at the pier throughout the war, including pilot training orientation. Eventually 15,000 pilots are qualified, including a young airman named George H.W. Bush.

1946

The Navy moves out and the University of Illinois takes up residence, transforming the facility into a two-year undergraduate branch campus that remains in existence until 1965.

1967

The original McCormick Place is destroyed by fire and Navy Pier helps keep many conventions and trade shows in Chicago for the four years it takes to rebuild McCormick Place.

1977

Navy Pier is designated as a Chicago Landmark.

1994

Navy Pier undergoes a $150 million redevelopment project, and is reborn July 12, 1995 featuring a mix of year-round entertainment, shops, restaurants, attractions and exhibition facilities.

2005

Navy Pier celebrates its 10th anniversary of re-opening.

2009

Navy Pier opens a major new summer attraction - the Navy Pier AeroBalloon. This helium balloon, located in Gateway Park, gives passengers a 350-foot-high view of the Chicago skyline and lakefront.

From beautiful landscapes to monumental architecture to iconic sculpture, Millennium Park is truly a 21st century creation. Chicago’s civic gem is a 24.5-acre oasis in the heart of downtown. Don’t miss the Park’s exciting exhibition, A Conversation with Chicago: Contemporary Sculptures from China, which is comprised of four large-scale sculptures by four leading Chinese sculptors and installation artists.

Park Attractions… Boeing Galleries: Add formal space for public exhibitions to the park's mid-level terraces. The Galleries are lined on either side by a row of graceful sycamore trees - a rarity in Chicago. BP Bridge: Take the long way across Columbus Drive to Daley Bicentennial Plaza via Frank Gehry’s whimsically serpentine steel creation. Chase Promenade: A beautiful tree lined walkway that spans the length of the Park. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below. Crown Fountain: These towering waterfall bookends bearing digital images of actual Chicagoans have proven to be a popular barefoot playground for splashing children. Jay Pritzker Pavilion: Architect Frank Gehry’s bold outdoor band shell, with its soaring steel ribbons and state-of-the-art canopied sound system over the lawn, is a breathtaking design that also happens to be a marquee performance venue. Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance: The theater seats 1,525 and offers programs ranging from classical ballet and contemporary dance to classical, chamber, opera and folk music. Lurie Gardens: A 2.5-acre paradise for green-loving urbanites, this collection of flora brings to life Chicago’s motto “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden). Wrigley Square and Millennium Monument: The Square is anchored by the Millennium Monument, a nearly full-sized replica of the original peristyle that stood in the same location from 1917 to 1953.

Free Park Happenings… A Conversation with Chicago: Contemporary Sculptures from China Discover why contemporary Chinese art has emerged from a domestic avant-garde movement into one of the fastest growing and most dynamic components of the international art scene with large-scale sculptures by four leading Chinese sculptors and installation artists currently on exhibit through October 2010.

Self-Guided Audio Tour: Travel at your own pace and listen as the masterminds behind the world’s most spectacular public space - architect Frank Gehry and artists Anish Kapoor and Jaume Plensa – recount how and why Millennium Park was built and the secrets that lie beneath the park floor.

Millennium Park can be conveniently reached by taking the CTA #3, #4, #151 and #157 buses. Call 312/742-1168 or visit www.millenniumpark.org for more information.

Over the years, there have no doubt been a number of patrons in tennis shoes and baseball caps who have been bitterly turned away at the door of the venerable Redhead Piano Bar, an oasis of cool amid the hustle and bustle of the city’s River North neighborhood. And while a bar with a dress code may seem like an anachronism in an age when “the customer is always right,” the Redhead’s insistence on maintaining its upscale appeal is just another of its old-school charms. Since the Redhead first opened its doors back in 1993, many competing piano lounges have come and gone – mostly gone – but despite great effort, few have been able to replicate the laid-back vibe and the self-assured sense of sophistication that the Redhead so naturally exudes. Owner Art Bryan’s place is a proud throwback to the nightlife of Chicago yesteryear – an attitude that is apparent in everything from the tuxedo-clad host who will never charge you a cover but who will regretfully inform you that your shorts don’t pass muster, to the high-class drink list which favors martinis, cognacs and cigars over an extensive beer selection. Cigar aficionados are sure to enjoy the cigar lounge located at the back of the bar. Redhead carries approximately 10 brands, ranging from Arturo Fuentes to Partagas Limited Reserve. Not surprisingly, the grand piano in front is a popular gathering spot at the Redhead, where patrons place requests and sing along to the standards from longtime players like Kenny Phelps, Dave Johnson, and John Zamojcin until the wee small hours of the morning. Other folks retreat to the center bar for a little conversation, or even further back to the small collection of tables in the rear of the compact room for the coziest of intimate encounters.
