Welcome to the 2014 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting here in Chicago! In 1964, the year of ASCO’s founding, 51 physicians gathered in this city for the first-ever Annual Meeting. Since that time, ASCO has grown exponentially, and this year’s Meeting will bring together over 25,000 oncology professionals from a broad range of specialties to discuss, connect, and learn from one another. On the occasion of ASCO’s 50th Annual Meeting, the theme of Science and Society encourages us to reflect on the tremendous progress that our Society has made in supporting critical advances against cancer. ASCO’s newest website, CancerProgress.net, explores these ideas through interactive timelines, reports, and stories celebrating the victories of the past 50 years. As we celebrate these successes, we also look toward a future where more malignancies can be prevented, treated, and cured. The 2014 Annual Meeting is an opportunity for our diverse membership and Meeting attendees to come together to address societal issues that present unique challenges to scientific progress. Accelerating progress will require efforts toward more efficient and higher-quality care, behavioral and environmental risk assessments and interventions, and improvements in translational and clinical research that will benefit all of society. This year’s Annual Meeting offers attendees many new, exciting features, ranging from networking opportunities to enhanced and expanded educational programs. And as always, scientific and educational sessions have been designed to provide attendees with the knowledge needed to achieve the highest standards of patient care. You’ll want to be sure to stop by ASCO Central in the Oncology Professionals Hall to learn more about the benefits of ASCO membership, ASCO’s programs, the latest technological offerings, and resources for patients from Cancer.Net. All ASCO publications will be available for sale here as well. Finally, I would ask that you consider making a donation to the Conquer Cancer Foundation, which funds cancer research, supports patients and caregivers, and provides cancer education worldwide. The Foundation’s “$50 for 50” program encourages a donation of just $50 in honor of ASCO’s anniversary. With your help, we can make ASCO’s next 50 years even better than its first.
