Celebrating 100 Years!

Water Tower Place Welcomes ASCO See page 2

Dear Colleague, Welcome to the 2010 ASCO Annual Meeting here in Chicago. The theme for this year’s meeting is “Advancing Quality Through Innovation” and over the next few days we will have the opportunity to discuss the latest innovations in research, quality, practice and technology in cancer care through various forums. We have a number of new initiatives at this year’s Annual Meeting, notably the Trials in Progress Poster Session, designed to facilitate awareness of and dialogue about open, ongoing Phase I and II clinical trials. Also, be sure to visit the updated Oncology Professionals Hall (formerly known as the Exhibit Hall), which includes general posters, many outstanding exhibitors, a large food court for relaxing and meeting with colleagues, and the Networking and Connection Hub, where you can watch and participate in technology demonstrations and meet ASCO leadership. You’ll also want to be sure and stop by ASCO Central in the Oncology Professionals Hall to learn more about the benefits of ASCO membership, ASCO’s programs and products, patient information, and the latest technological offerings. All ASCO publications will also be available for sale at ASCO Central. Thanks for joining us at the 46th ASCO Annual Meeting; the premier venue for disseminating vital research to the international oncology community to advance the provision of high-quality care by turning innovation into action. I hope you have an enjoyable and productive time here in Chicago.

Sincerely, Allen Lichter, MD CEO, ASCO

Buddy Guy Moves to New Digs Five-time Grammy award-winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Buddy Guy, moves his legendary blues club to new digs. Don’t miss the month-long grand opening celebration for Legends new incarnation at 700 S. Wabash Avenue in Chicago’s South Loop. Although the décor may be reminiscent of the original location with blue walls and a checkerboard-patterned floor (Buddy didn’t want the club to look overly polished), guests can expect a few upgrades including a larger stage, more blues memorabilia from Buddy’s private collection, and a brand new state-ofthe-art sound system, among other things. Mr. Guy threatened to burn a grill full of hickory logs for a week to get the place properly smoked up, if necessary. 700 S. Wabash. 312/427-0333. www.buddyguys.com.

Beyond The Exhibition Hall by Mark Loehrke McCormick Place will be bustling this week as thousands of attendees settle in for the American Society of Oncology’s annual meeting. But even a busy convention schedule has its occasional downtime. That’s why we’ve taken the liberty to put together a convention-worthy itinerary for the all-important off-day. 8:00am Start a big day with a big breakfast at Yolk, where the name says it all. Eggs take center stage in most of the breakfast selections, including a wide array of omelettes, skillets, frittatas, and breakfast sandwiches. 1120 S. Michigan; 312/789-9655 and 747 N Wells; 312/787-2277. 9:30am Chicago’s amazing architecture should find a way onto any complete itinerary, so your morning will include a trip to the historic South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park for a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House. 5757 S. Woodlawn; 708/848-1976. 11:30am More architectural splendor is on the schedule, but this time the view is from the waters of Lake Michigan and is accompanied by a delicious threecourse meal on the high seas with a Lunch Cruise aboard the Odyssey. 600 E. Grand; 866/305-2469. 2:30pm Back on shore, it’s time to sample the retail bounty of Chicago with a trip to the Magnificent Mile. From the vertical urban mall experience of Water Tower Place (835 N. Michigan; 312/440-3580) to the unique artwork at places like Lotton Gallery (900 N. Michigan; 312/664-6203) and Atlas Galleries (900 N. Michigan; 312/649-0999), if it isn’t here, they probably don’t sell it.

7:30pm This off-day itinerary closes just a block from your dinner table with a ticket to the massive theatrical event Billy Elliot the Musical at the Oriental Theatre. Powered by the music of Elton John and riding the momentum of ten Tony awards – this ballet-boy blockbuster is an emotional crowd-pleaser with heartwarming story set to plenty of singing and dancing. 24 W. Randolph; 800/775-2000.
