You’ll find entertainment abounds at Millennium Park throughout the month of June, so come on out and enjoy the free park happenings. This month Millennium Park will be hosting the Grant Park Music Festival’s 78th season, an exciting exhibition titled, Interconnected: The Sculptures of Yvonne Domenge, comprised of three large spheres that defy gravity and space, guided garden tours, multiple concert series, weekend workouts, and much, much more. BP Bridge: Take the long way across Columbus Drive to Daley Bicentennial Plaza via Frank Gehry’s whimsically serpentine steel creation. Chase Promenade: A beautiful tree lined walkway that spans the length of the Park. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below. Crown Fountain: These towering waterfall bookends bear digital images of actual Chicagoans year-round. Jay Pritzker Pavilion: Architect Frank Gehry’s bold outdoor band shell, with its soaring steel ribbons and state-of-the-art canopied sound system over the lawn, is a breathtaking design. Lurie Gardens: A 2.5–acre paradise for green-loving urbanites, this collection of flora brings to life Chicago’s motto “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden). Wrigley Square and Millennium Monument: The Square is anchored by the Millennium Monument, a nearly full-sized replica of the original peristyle that stood in the same location between 1917 and 1953.

A Day with Dad

by Mark Loehrke

June means more than just the beginning of another great summer in Chicago. It’s also time once again to pull out all the stops and pay tribute to dear old dad with a big Father’s Day on the town. Don’t settle for another boring tie or a box of golf balls when you can wow him with outings like this:

Anchors, Aweigh He’s the captain of the family – now let dad be captain for a day on the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan with a rented Duffy Boat from Vantage Yacht Club (600 W. Chicago; 855/777-1855).

Rock ‘n’ Roll Strange as it may seem, for many dads of a certain age, the songs of Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Poison made up the soundtrack of their youth. If he saw the Tom Cruise movie, he’ll probably love a chance to see the original stage version of Rock of Ages at the Broadway Playhouse (175 E. Chestnut; 800/775-2000). 84

Make Music

by Mark Loehrke

If the agenda for your visit to Chicago includes hearing live music, you’ve definitely picked a good week to be here. Because even though this city pulses with the sounds of classical, blues, jazz, rock and more all year long, there’s nothing quite like Make Music Chicago on June 21, when the entire urban area becomes one giant concert hall. Inspired by the 30-year tradition of “Fête de la Musique” in France, this free daylong celebration of “spontaneous musical combustion” encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to join a melodious party that is set to include more than 800 performers in a variety of genres at 75 sites all around the city, including places like Daley Plaza, Millennium Park and Lincoln Park Zoo, as well as 30 city parks and dozens of downtown street corners and plazas. The celebration concludes with a Grand Finale at St. James Cathedral Commons (Huron & Wabash) from 6:30pm–9pm. For a complete schedule of sites and performers, call 773/850-0662 or visit www.makemusicchicago.com. 86
