From beautiful landscapes to monumental architecture to iconic sculpture, MILLENNIUM PARK is truly a 21st century creation. Chicago’s civic gem is a 24.5-acre oasis in the heart of downtown. Don’t miss the Park’s Jun Kaneko art exhibition, comprised of his signature dangos, meaning “round form” or “dumpling” in Japanese. The exhibit is located in the North Boeing Gallery.

M U ST-S E E AT T RACT I O N S BP Bridge: Take the long way across Columbus Drive to Daley Bicentennial Plaza via Frank Gehry’s whimsically serpentine steel creation. Chase Promenade: A beautiful tree lined three-blocklong walkway that spans the length of the Park. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below. Crown Fountain: These towering waterfall bookends bear digital images of actual Chicagoans year-round.

Millennium Park is accesible via the CTA #3, #4, #151 and #157 buses.

Lurie Gardens: A 2.5–acre paradise for green-loving urbanites, this collection of flora brings to life Chicago’s motto “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden).

The Loop Throughout its history, Chicago has been a hub for transportation, communication and innovation. Chicago is home to one of the most diverse economies in the country with a broad range of industries, such as high-tech, manufacturing, distribution, as well as air travel. In addition to the numerous corporations which call Chicago home, the private-sector workforce of nearly four million people keeps the city’s 350 billion dollar economy running. The Loop has blossomed into a vibrant, mixed-use district, filled with retail stores, restaurants, residences, and entertainment, along with respected educational and world-class cultural institutions. The longevity and accessibility of these institutions has resulted in the growing sense of a truly cohesive community, and as the Loop gains greater appreciation of it's unique offerings, the numbers of residents, businesses, students and visitors continues to rise rapidly.

Still Rock ‘n’ Roll to Me The original HARD ROCK CAFÉ opened in London in June 1971. This month the company celebrates 42 years and over 175 locations in 55 countries. The legacy began when two Americans wanted a good burger while living in London. The two opened up a small diner in a Rolls Royce dealership and less than 10 years later, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend would get into a battle one-uping each other with memorabilia at the establishment. Today, the total collection has over 74,000 pieces, many of them here in Chicago. Guests can savor juicy burgers and other classic American fare while admiring the “museum” of guitars, clothing, autographs and other collectables lining the walls. Open Sun.–Thurs., 11am–11pm; Fri.–Sat., 11am–1pm. 63 W. Ontario, 312.943.2252.

Editor’s Choice Still undecided about what to do in Chicago? Here are a few of his favorites:

Fourth of July Fun Mid-summer is upon us. We want you to make the most of the holiday and see the best of what Chicago, the greatest American city (in our opinion), has to offer. Start your fun-filled day off with a hearty breakfast. You’ll need the energy to make it to the fireworks tonight! Yolk (355 E. Ohio, 312.822.9655) offers a number of delicious omelets and decadent benedicts. Their un-ordinary French toast plates are perfect for those who like their breakfasts on the sweeter side. After breakfast, head over to Kayak Chicago (1501 N. Magnolia, 630.336.7245). Their Architecture Tour takes participants along the Chicago River in single or double boats. An educated guide explains the history and significance of the buildings along the route. 10am–1pm. Kayak rentals are also available for those who want to venture off on their own. With all of that exercise, you’re sure to be hungry again. Head over to Frank ‘N’ Dawgs (1863 N. Clybourn, 312.281.5187), a diner less than one mile away. Their “Haute Dawgs” are 86

house. They frequently mix up the menu with original hot dog recipes submitted in an ongoing competition. Nothing says ‘Murica more than consumerism. Keep our economy going by spending the afternoon shopping on the Magnificent Mile. Didn’t pack for the weather? Patagonia (48 E. Walton, 312.640.5934) has got your clothing needs covered. Then venture off and hit up some other favorites. Iwan Ries (19 S. Wabash, 312.372.1306) is a local shop and great for all of your cigar and tobacco needs. Block Thirty Seven, Shops on State (108 N. State, 312.261.4700) is a great place to hit for all of your shopping needs. The four-story mall includes the Disney Store, Eileen Fisher, Zara, Steve Madden and many others. After a long day of shopping, head to Navy Pier for dinner. Rest tired legs at Billy Goat Tavern (700 E. Grand, 312.670.8789), and chow down on a cheezborger. Adults can relax with a beer while little ones will enjoy the scenery. An outdoor patio lets guests enjoy the weather and get a great view of the lake. Come for dinner and drinks, but stay for the fireworks. Or, take a ride on the Ferris Wheel and see the city from a spectacular new angle. Navy Pier offers an excellent view of the skyline at dusk. Don’t miss the fireworks! Get a spectacular view from one of Shoreline’s cruises. The 60–minute July 4th Lake Fireworks Cruise covers the entire length of Chicago’s magnificent skyline and offers guests a front-row view of the fireworks. A cash bar is offered and all ages are welcome. $47.50. Boarding begins at 8:15pm. Departs from Gateway Park at Navy Pier, 312.222.9328.
