This Week In Chicago

4 FRIDAY

ON THE COVER SUMMER IN THE CITY The Fourth of July may not be the official midpoint of the season, but if you have yet to kick your summer into high gear, the parades and fireworks stand as great reminders to get moving before it’s too late. Fortunately, Chicago is a great place to turn summer into a verb. Buckingham Fountain (pictured above) has long been the centerpiece of the city’s “front yard” in summer, with the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan beckoning on one side and the wide open green spaces of historic Grant Park on the other. So hop aboard a Shoreline Sightseeing Cruise (600 E. Grand, 312.222.9328) to see the city’s impressive skyline from an amazing vantage point, or head to the park to enjoy a two-wheeled adventure from Bike and Roll Chicago (239 E. Randolph, 312.729.1000), an Absolutely Chicago Segway tour (238 E. Monroe, 312.552.5100), or just to sample a summertime tradition like this week’s Taste of Chicago festival. You’ll find plenty of information on all of these great options in this issue. So get out there and make the most of summer in the city!

Al Fresco, at Last...

Photos clockwise from top left: Emerald Loop, Da Lobsta, and Drumbar.

After an unusually long and harsh winter, restaurants all over Chicago are happy to have finally opened their patios – but it’s their customers who are even more excited. Al fresco dining is hugely popular in the city during the summer months, and there are plenty of places to head outside for a bite. Sip a smooth, refreshing Guinness at EMERALD LOOP (216 N. Wabash; 312.263.0200) while enjoying some Irish fare on the busy outdoor patio. Head to the sea shanty-inspired DA LOBSTA (12 E. Cedar; 312.929.2423) to treat yourself to a delicious lobster roll while you watch the city stream by. And for the perfect end to a summer day, climb up to a rooftop lounge like DRUMBAR (201 E. Delaware; 312.493.5000) for an ideal place to cool down and enjoy the view.

Oysters Aplenty! What kind of oysters are on the menu tonight at Bow & Stern (1371 W. Chicago, 312.988.0644)? Well, that depends. There might be eight different varieties or ten or twelve, and they might be from the Northeast or the West Coast or the Gulf of Mexico. It’s just a matter of availability for the absolute freshest options (in any case, they’re always just $1 each during happy hour 5pm-7pm, Tuesday through Thursday). Freshness is the name of the seafood game at this Noble Square newcomer, from the wide-ranging menu to the revitalized open-air and exposed-brick space. Great Scots! Brigadoon, is a classic musical that seems to inspire more memories than it does modern-day productions, Lerner and Loewe’s 1947 tale of love, fate and a magical Scottish village that appears from the mist but once a year seems ripe for the type of revival that many a dusty old title has received on Broadway in recent years. But theater lovers in Chicago don’t have to wait to see if that happens – thanks to director Rachel Rockwell and her talented cast, the bagpipes are calling and memorable tunes like “Almost Like Being in Love” are ringing out all summer long in the Loop Theater District. Due to popular demand, performances have been extended through August 10 at Goodman Theatre (170 N. Dearborn, 312.443.3800). Tickets ($25-$97, subject to change) are available at 312.443.3800 or goodmantheatre.org/Brigadoon.

Taste of the City by Kelly Rice

Chicagoans are serious about eating, so it’s no surprise that the city hosts one of the world’s largest food festivals every summer. Now in its 34th year, Taste of Chicago unfolds over five days in Grant Park from July 9th through the 13th. The Taste showcases the rich diversity of Chicago’s culinary scene, with more than 60 vendors offering something to satisfy almost every palate. Be sure to sample the corned beef from the legendary Manny’s Coffee Shop, some delicious Thai specialties from Star of Siam, and a sweet treat from Chicago Cupcake. In addition to the tasty grub, the Taste also features great live music every day, with an impressive lineup this year that includes Aloe Blacc and Janelle Monáe. Admission to the Taste of Chicago is free; food/beverage tickets are $8.50 and seats for the concerts start at $18 (lawn seating is free). Entrance to the festival is at Jackson and Columbus. For more information, including a full lineup of vendors and entertainers, call 312.744.3315.
