McCormick Place will be bustling this week as thousands of attendees settle in for a variety of presentations, panels, and exhibits associated with the Institute of Food Technologists annual meeting and food expo. But even a busy convention schedule has its downtime, and in a great city at a great time of year, there’s not a moment to spare if you intend to make the most of your brief stay in Chicago. 9:00am Start a big day with a big breakfast at Yolk, where the name says it all. Eggs take center stage in most of the breakfast selections, including a wide array of omelettes, skillets, frittatas, and breakfast sandwiches. But non-egg lovers will also find plenty of pancake and waffle options, as well as a handful of salads and sandwiches. 1120 S. Michigan; 312/789-9655 and 747 N Wells; 312/787-2277. 11:30am Chicago’s amazing architecture should find a way onto any complete itinerary, so your morning will include a trip to the historic South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park for a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House. This 1909 masterpiece is one of the most well-known examples of Wright’s prairie-style design, and a great reminder that not every architectural wonder in Chicago is a skyscraper. 5757 S. Woodlawn; 708/848-1976. 2:30pm It’s time to sample the retail bounty of Chicago with a trip to the Magnificent Mile. From the vertical urban mall experience of Water Tower Place (835 N. Michigan; 312/440-3580) to the unique artwork at places like Lotton Gallery (900 N. Michigan; 312/664-6203) and Atlas Galleries (900 N. Michigan; 312/649-0999), if it isn’t here, they probably don’t sell it. 5:30pm All of that shopping is sure to have inspired a healthy appetite, and with a night at the theater coming up you can hardly make a better choice than the popular supper club Petterino’s, where hungry
