This Week In Chicago
10 FRIDAY
ON THE COVER COOL DOWN AT MILLENNIUM PARK The Crown Fountain: an interactive public art piece that projects video images of Chicagoans’ faces on an LED screen. Between the two 50-foot glass towers lies a shallow reflecting pool, and as visitors splash around in the pool, refreshing streams of water sporadically squirt from a hole in each tower, as if the huge faces were spouting water out of their mouths. To transition between faces, a cascading waterfall pours down each tower. On a hot day from mid-spring to mid-fall, you'll often see children (and sometimes adults) running around in the pool between the towers. The fountain is just one way for you to keep cool this summer at Millennium Park. If you can squeeze through the throngs of people, claim a spot in the shade of Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate, aka “The Bean.” Order an orange sherbet cone or a mint chocolate chip shake from Park Café. While lounging on the Jay Pritzker Pavilion’s Great Lawn waiting for the Grant Park Orchestra to play, stop at the Goose Island Beer Garden on the east side of the lawn for a craft beer. 201 E. Randolph. millenniumpark.org.

Goose Island Beer Garden: Located just East of the Pritzker Pavillion stage and offering locally sourced menu items and the finest hand crafted beers during all music performances. Jay Pritzker Pavilion: Architect Frank Gehry’s bold outdoor band shell, with its soaring steel ribbons and state-of-the-art canopied sound system over the lawn, is a breathtaking design. Art that Holds Water Bodies of water are a recurring symbol in art—from serene sailing moments to darker, more ominous, stormy scenes. Whether you’re looking for an etching of a peaceful scene along the Thames River by 19th-century master James McNeill Whistler or an abstract sailboat painting to hang in your home, ATLAS GALLERIES has options. Atlas, which has recently celebrated its 45th anniversary, sells waterscapes from contemporary artists including Chicagoan Michael Cheney (whose painting Presidio Impression is pictured at right), Rob Gonsalves, and Wendy Norton, as well as prints from masters such as Chagall, Degas, Picasso, Rembrandt, and Rockwell. Fare Share In the City
Dilemma: you’re dining at a restaurant where everything looks good. Solution: order lots of little dishes and share. Small plates are huge in Chicago, for all kinds of cuisines. Try wine bar EDUARDO’S ENOTECA (1212 N. Dearborn, 312.337.4490) for light Italian fare, including the Pollo al Diavolo Pizze with spicy grilled chicken, crema, and scallions (above, right). For seafood, CATCH 35 (35 W Wacker, 312.346.3500) offers mussels in a Thai lemongrass broth, spicy buffalo shrimp, and yellow fin tuna sashimi (above, top left). One of the city’s hottest spots is the PURPLE PIG (500 N. Michigan, 312.464.1744), located on the Magnificent Mile. The restaurant’s eclectic summer menu includes fresh ingredients perfect for sharing: a fried deviled egg with arugula and caper berries (above, top bottom), for example, as well as lamb loin and Greek quinoa salad.

Chicago has had some warm weather this summer (read: understatement). But August is where it really kicks into high gear, and it’s easy to find an outdoor spot to cool down with a drink. See some of the city’s best views from the middle of Lake Michigan aboard the MYSTIC BLUE (600 E. Grand, 888.957.2320). On its Lake-Breeze Dinner Lounge Cruise, sip champagne and listen to live guitar on the observation deck. Rated Chicago Magazine’s 2012 Best Rooftop Bar, don’t miss the Raffaello Hotel’s DRUMBAR (201 E. Delaware, 312.943.5000) on the hotel’s 18th floor. Drumbar offers craft cocktails as well as local beers. For a refreshing summer sip, try the Water Cooler at BRIDGE HOUSE TAVERN (321 N. Clark, 312.644.0283). Made with Hendrick’s gin, watermelon puree, and cucumber simple syrup, the refreshing drink suits the vibe of the open-air patio.

EASTLAND A NEW MUSICAL
Editor’s Choice Still undecided about what to do in Chicago? Here are a few of our favorites:
Laughs, Unrehearsed Chicago’s storied improv scene wasn’t planned that way—no surprise. Starting in the 1950s, when several University of Chicago students started an ensemble called the Compass Players, improv has been a mainstay of the Chicago theater scene. Several of the Compass Players ultimately went on to found the Second City Theater, which has graduated stars including Chris Farley, Tina Fey, and Stephen Colbert. Since then, dozens of other improv theaters, shows, and troupes have sprung up around the city, including ComedySportz, io Chicago, and the Annoyance Theatre. And each theater breeds new talent: ask any Chicagoan if they’ve taken an improv class, and probably half of them will say, “Yes, and.” If you’re looking for it, it’s easy to find an improv show or two to see every night of the week. Note: most of these improv shows are not family-friendly. 84
